Tour description

Embark on an electrifying journey through Lisbon's soul with our Free Tour of the Unmissable Lisbon . Dive deep into 3,000 years of history where tales of resilience, intrigue, and culture paint the vibrant canvas of one of Europe's most dynamic capitals. Follow our expert guide through the winding streets and hidden corners, where every stone and shadow has a story waiting to be told. Our adventure springs to life at the Monumento aos Restauradores , a towering tribute to Portugal’s enduring spirit against Spanish domination. As we saunter into the pulsating heart of Rossio Square, brace yourself for an enthralling saga spanning mystical Sebastianism , Lisbon's clandestine role in WWII espionage, and a touching reflection at the Jewish Memorial beside the historical São Domingos Church, echoing the sorrow of the 1506 Lisbon massacre. The mood lightens as we introduce you to Ginjinha, Lisbon's cherished cherry liqueur, in one of its landmark bars—a sweet sip of local tradition with a spirited kick! Ascending to the Carmo Convent ruins, the remnants speak of beauty and resilience, complemented by stunning vistas from the Elevator of Santa Justa. Here, the narrative weaves through the 1755 earthquake's transformative aftermath, philosophically and socially, leading up to the groundbreaking Carnation Revolution of 1974 . At the entrance to Chiado, we honor Portugal's premier poet, segueing into the chic Chiado district. This neighborhood juxtaposes Bairro Alto's historical depth with its modern-day flair, offering a glimpse into Lisbon's evolving identity. Our tour might venture into the realms of Fernando Pessoa ’s literary genius and the historic National Theater of São Carlos, before culminating at the grand Praça do Comércio. Here, the majestic Rua Augusta Arch stands as a symbol of Lisbon’s rebirth from the ashes of adversity, marking a fitting close to our voyage through time. This tour isn't just a walk; it's a journey through the essence of Lisbon, led by passionate locals eager to share their insider tips and hidden gems. Join us to soak in Lisbon’s cultural legacy, where history breathes through the streets and monuments, promising memories as vivid and enduring as the city itself. Lisbon doesn’t just tell its story; it invites you to live it.

What will we visit on this tour?

Blue Umbrellas around the Monument dos Restauradores

We kick off the tour at the Monumento aos Restauradores. This plaza opens up to Avenida da Liberdade and celebrates the moment when Portugal regained independence from Spain in 1640.

Another beautiful monument in the center of the city, the Rossio train station establishes a dialogue with the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém.

This is the place where the Jewish Massacre took place in 1506. Learn more about this impressive story and discover one of the most beautiful churches in the city, the Igreja de São Domingos.

Once an important market in the city, Praça da Figueira is now a busy spot at the city center.

Rossio is a place rich in recent Portuguese history, when Lisbon was a center of espionage battles in the 2nd World War. But there's plenty more to discover here.

The main artery of Lisbon's downtown and one of the most photographed places in the city.

The entrance from Rossio to Chiado, the cultural center of the city.

Another Lisbon landmark. Lisbon has a handfull of elevators but this one is really the one to look at. Yet another recent monument like the Estação do Rossio, the Santa Justa Elevator stands out with the Church of Carmo just behind it.

The living testimony of the great earthquake of 1755, the gothic church of Carmo is another unmissable monument in Lisbon, where medieval history merges with the April Revolution of 1974.

This is where the dictator Marcelo Caetano presented is surrender to the people of Portugal. A meaningful place in our recent history.

Post earthquake, this is probably one of the most beautiful tilled houses in the country.

This is where the Company of Jesus built there first temple back in the XVI century. It's also the place where the lottery was announced one hundred years ago.

Once the city's most modern district, Bairro Alto is the bohemian place in Lisbon. With over 500 years of stories, Bairro Alto is in the heart of every true Lisboeta.

If you ever want to listen to amateur Fado, this is the place to be.

The prince of poets, the inventor of the Portuguese language, Camões stands above everyone else. Only one thing surpassed his work: his incredible aventurous life.

The entrance to Chiado from Bairro Alto. Stories of coffee, Fernando Pessoa and Chiado himself are here to be told.

The most beautiful theatre in Portugal, São Carlos has plenty to discover.

Still in Chiado, we will wander around its streets and secrets.

The Arch of Triumph. It speaks for itself.

Lisbon's largest plaza, an amazing place to finish our walking tour.

ABOUT LISBON

WELCOME TO LISBON

TAKE LISBOA

Lisbon is full of myths and legends, history and stories, light and viewpoints and there are so many things to do in Lisbon that not even all our free tours will be enough.   If we were asked to choose a moment, a single moment in our free tours of Lisbon that would symbolize the authentic city, our answer would be the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. It's not by chance that so many travelers look for this magical place. At our feet, the Portuguese sidewalk. Behind us, the sober Church of Santa Luzia and its panels of blue and white tiles by António Quaresma that represent two such important moments in the history of the city: the conquest of Lisbon in 1147 and Lisbon of the maritime expansion before the 1755 earthquake. In front of us, the view over the Alfama house, in which one can guess the labyrinthine web of the oldest quarter of Portugal. And to encompass all this is the mouth of the river Tejo in all its extension. It's breathtaking.  The Phoenicians who settled here in the 8th century BC and named it the land of Alis-Ubbo (mild cove) and river Taghi (good fishing) were certainly fascinated. Lisbon was throughout the centuries, in fact, a place of enchantment for so many other peoples who settled here, Carthaginians, Romans, Jews, Suevi and Muslims.  Best destination in the world, three of the seven wonders of Portugal, the best hostel in the world, the best aquarium in the world, the best boutique hotel in the world, the most picturesque street in the world, the titles accumulate and Lisbon has never been so sought after as now. The only comparable period would be the Portuguese age of discoveries. Despite not being a very large city, Lisbon is so much more than the Portuguese sidewalk, the symmetrical tiles, and pastels of Belém or Fado. Lisbon is bohemian and bohemian is the Bairro Alto, a quincentennial neighborhood reborn with the children of the 25th of April revolution. Lisbon is culture and culture is the Chiado, its centenary shops and the theatres. Lisbon is romance and romance is the streets of the old districts, their alleys and corners. Lisbon is charisma and charisma is the low dovecote erected after the earthquake of 1755. Lisbon is history and history is Belém and its monuments that mark the great period of the discoveries. Lisbon is flavor and taste is the old taverns with menus of chalk and traditional gastronomy. Lisbon is a feast and celebration is the Popular Saints, their colorful balloons, baskets of basil and sardines baked in bread. Lisbon is light and light are the various viewpoints of the city, always with Tejo as witness of our dazzle. Who was the queen of the snakes who fell in love with Ulysses? Why are the ravens a symbol of the Portuguese capital? Who is the king the Portuguese are still waiting for? Where did the dictatorship that lasted half a century end? Lisbon is overflowing with legends and myths, and the history of Portugal is naturally confused with the history of its capital. From the conquest of the city to the Moors to the origins of Fado, from the wars with Castile to espionage in World War II, from the history of tiles to urban art murals, Lisbon is a kaleidoscope of experiences and sensations and to walk its streets with our free tour guides is an experience that will teach you the meaning of the word Saudade. Many centuries ago it was believed that the world ended here. The sea was the beginning of the end and in the oceans only dreadful sea monsters lived. It was to Lisbon that so many civilizations arrived to stay. It was from Lisbon that we went to meet new civilizations. Lisbon is today an open city to the world and more than seventy nationalities live in its streets and squares and therefore it has won the title of city of tolerance. Our free tours around Lisbon will show you the many legends and stories that the city of the seven hills has to tell you. All you have to do is listen with your soul.

Lisbon Walking Tour (Map, Route + Audio)

lisbona free tour

In this post, we provide you with a walking tour of Lisbon with a map, a suggested route, as well as an audio tour option.

This walking tour covers the picturesque neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Chiado. Additionally, we have self-guided walking tours for Baixa , Alfama , and Belém .

Everything listed here is part of Day 1 of our 3-day Lisbon itinerary .

Barrio Alto Lisbon

What are Bairro Alto and Chiado?

The Bairro Alto is an unofficial district of Lisbon made up of a series of quaint streets on a steep hill. Words like bohemian and colorful are often used to describe it.

It was first constructed in the 16th century to house the ship workers and sailors of the city.

Today the streets tend to be quiet during the day and come alive at night with restaurants, bars, late-night-shops, and Fado houses bringing a festive spirit to her streets.

Chiado Lisbon

Chiado is first and foremost a shopping district, with designer labels adorning storefront throughout the district. Nevertheless, most of the sites on this tour are located in Chiado.

And like its next-door neighbor Bairro Alto, Chiado also has a lively nightlife, including high-end theater and opera.

HOW TO GET HERE

There are several ways to get to either neighborhood and it really depends on where you want to start.

Click on the map to enlarge

Barrio Alto and Chiado Map

Although we start this self-guided tour from the Elevador da Bica, one of the city's 3 funiculars, you can also take Tram 28 to reach the same starting point in Chiado.

You can also discover the area by taking part in one of the many free walking tours that depart daily from Praça Luís de Camões (#2 on our list).

GPS-Enabled Audio Tour

We offer an audio tour of Bairro Alto/Chiado/Baixa, researched, written, and recorded by one of our own tour guides.

Here’s a sample.

  • Purchase an audio tour.
  • Get a confirmation email with .mp3, .pdf and embeddable Google Map
  • Enjoy the tour(s).

1. Elevador da Bica

This funicular (tram) runs from Rua de São Paulo to Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto .

It departs every 15 minutes carrying locals and tourists up the steep and graffiti lined hills of Lisbon to the Chiado/Bairro Alto and Bica neighborhoods of the city.

The entrance is a bit difficult to find. Look for the sign over the arch on the building of #234 on Rua de São Paulo. Choose the front or rear for the best view of the graffiti-lined streets.

Your Viva Day Pass or Lisboa Card allows you to board for free and without waiting in a queue. Single rides are. €4.10 return

2. Praça Luís de Camões

Although it may lack the grandeur of other squares in Lisbon, Praça Luís de Camões, also called Largo do Camoes, is a favorite meeting spot for locals.

The cobblestone ground is full of images of ships and mermaids, and in the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Luís de Camões, considered Portugal's greatest poet.

Praça Luís Vaz de Camões

At the bottom of this monument stands eight other figures from Portuguese literature representing the love the Portuguese have for the written word.

Don’t miss the Pasteis de Nata (custard tarts) from either Manteigaria or the award-winning Pastelaria Batalha, both on the square.

Lisbon’s famous Tram 28E passes through this area.

Several free walking tours depart from here.

Take Lisboa offers a 10:30 am daily (+ 14:00 on Tues, Thurs, Sat) tour of Chiado, Bairro Alto, and Baixa. Learn more or book here . (They also offer free tours of Alfama and Belem).

Likewise, New Lisbon offers a very similar tour with more daily options: 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, and 16:00. You can  learn more or book the tour here .

3. Fado in Chiado

Fado music originated in Portugal in the 1820s in the Bairro Alto, Alfama, and Mouraria districts.

The style is one of melancholy or mournfulness with song lyrics that often grieve that which was lost or are nostalgic for the past.

Live Fado at Tasca Do Chico

It was the music of the poor - sailors, dock workers, fishwives and others from the working classes.

Although Fado in Chiado is the most recognized spot to experience Fado music in the area, it has a significant cover charge.

A more authentic Fado can be found in a smaller bar, one with no cover charge, called Tasca Do Chico . Reservations are suggested.

4. Chafariz do Carmo

Chafariz do Carmo sits in the center of Largo do Carmo, a historic and picturesque square and one of the most popular in Lisbon.

Flowering trees from South American, Jacarandas, fill the square, providing shade to those who relax beneath.

Chafariz do Carmo

This freshwater fountain is cherished because it managed to survive the great earthquake of 1755.

Four pillars rise to meet four arches, while inside dolphins sit atop the fountain itself, in a style of baroque and classical.

5. Carmo Convent

Just off Largo do Carmo one finds the ruins of the gothic Carmo Convent, a monastic complex destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755.

5,000 books and all of the church's artistic and religious creations were lost as well, and residing clerics were forced to abandon the building.

Over time various restorations and repairs were made, then stopped in 1834, when religious orders were abolished in Portugal.

This left the naves and transept uncovered and chapels incomplete, with walls and buttresses left open to the sky.

Today an archeological museum resides in the church’s nave and there are exhibition rooms in the apsidal chapels.

Tombs of great figures such as King Dinis I (from the early 14 century) and King Ferdinand the I (from later in the same century) can be found on-site, as well as some beautiful and very old artifacts.

6. The Elevador de Santa Justa (Santa Justa Lift)

The most ornate, neo-gothic elevator you have likely come across, the Santa Justa lift, now at over 100 years old, was built to transport folks from lower to upper Lisbon.

The designer was a fan of Gustav Eiffel and sought to emulate the Eiffel Tower with this wrought iron structure. One makes the trip in a wood-decorated elevator car, up to one of her two levels.

For €1.50 more you can head up an additional two stories to the Viewing Deck.  It’s here you’ll find an unobstructed 360-degree view of Lisbon , including Alfama and the Castle of St. George in the distance.

If you are already at the top in the Largo do Carmo area, you can directly enter the top-level through a series of stairs.

Entrance this way tends to be much faster, skipping the long lines that form for the elevator. Access this way is free.

Hours :  7:00 to 22:45 (10:45 PM)

Tickets :

  • €5.30 return on the elevator to lower deck
  • €1.50 to travel on the elevator to the top deck
  • Concessions can be had with the Viva Day Pass or Lisboa Card

7. Cervejaria Trindade

This historic restaurant, residing in a 13th-century convent, is popular with locals and tourists alike.

After religious orders were abolished in Portugal, this space became a beer hall and even today beer is brewed on the premises.

Inside are two large vaulted rooms, decorated with blue, white, and gold azulejos tile panels depicting the four seasons.

Orange and gold ceiling slope overhead and family-style tables line the room, and it's here where you sit and enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine including seafood, meats, desserts, and regional wines.

The restaurant suggests calling if you’d like to discover their dish of the day, served Monday-Friday at lunchtime.

Hours :

  • Monday- Thursday  12:00 - 24.00 (midnight)
  • Friday- Sunday  12:00 - 1:00

Pricing :

  • Main courses €11.50-€163.00

8. Igreja of São Roque

The austerity on the outside of this church belies the extravagant beauty found on the inside.

With a painted wood ceiling, azulejos, inlaid marble tile, jade, amethyst, gold leaf, statues, and Mannerist, early Baroque, Later Baroque, and Roman Baroque design, one can’t help but be impressed by the extraordinary talent involved in creating this jewel.

The church, still active, was originally built to house a relic from Saint Rocco.

Because of his healing of victims of the plague, King Manuel I believed that this relic might protect his people from the Black Plague.

A group established to care for the church, the Brotherhood of St. Roch still exists and maintains the church to this day.

In the early 1900s, a museum was adjoined to the church. Here one finds religious artifacts, an art collection, paintings, sculptures, and a collection of reliquaries donated by a member of the Borga family.

Church Hours:

  • 9:30 and 17:00 (5 pm).

Museum Hours :

  • Monday   Closed
  • Tuesday-Wednesday   10:00 until 18:00 (6:00 pm)
  • Thursday   14:00-21:00 ( 2 - 11 pm)
  • Friday-Sunday  10:00 until 18:00 (6 pm)

9. Museum of Freemasonry in Portugal

This recently opened museum includes a historic archive of Freemason history in Portugal dating back to 1727.

See photos, lodge member clothes, items used in rites/rituals, and more.

Freemason Symbol on Wall

Museum Hours :

  • Sunday   Closed
  • Monday-Friday   14:30-17:30 (2:30 to 5:30 PM)
  • Saturday  Closed

10. The Solar do Vinho do Porto (run by the Port Wine Institute)

If you like Port, you’ve died and gone to a relaxed and casual heaven. Think wood-beamed ceilings, comfy oversized chairs, and every type of port you’ve ever wanted to try.

Port Wine Institute Lisbon Barrio Alto

The waiters present you with a listing of ports ranging from €2/€3 - €20 a glass. Bottles can be purchased as well. One can match your port with a cheese and snack on nuts.

11. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

While construction has been ongoing for years, it's well worth making a stop at the often serene terraced garden.

It allows for one of the most panoramic views of Lisbon, with São Jorge Castle and its walls, the Alfama neighborhood and city center ( Baixa ), and the ocean in sightlines.

The garden was laid out in the 19th century. In the lower garden, one finds lawn beds separated by walkways and benches.

Dotted across the garden are the busts of known Portuguese figures, and small fountains line the walls.

There is also a drinks and snacks kiosk with seating.

The upper level, cobblestone and tree-covered, also has benches and an even larger drink and snacks kiosk with outdoor seating.

At times a street market is set up, with vendors selling handmade art, home decor, trinkets, and traditional Portuguese food. Don’t be surprised to find artists settled there to paint the cityscape as the wow factor can’t be beat.

12. Elevador da Glória

Designed by the same man who designed the Santa Justa Lift, these cable cars carry passengers up and down the steep slopes of the city.

The Elevador da Gloria is the most popular of the cars and is often packed with tourists and locals.

The graffiti painted trams descend a steep hill, running close to flats and local businesses, as locals walk the cobblestone sidewalks nearby.

  • 7:30-21:15 (9:15 pm)
  • €3.10 - 1 ticket.
  • €4.10 - return.

10 – Ascensor da Bica

It’s time to see an icon of Lisbon: the yellow tram ! While the famous yellow tram number 28 runs in the Alfama district, there is also one in the city center.

ascensor da bica in lisbon

The Ascensor da Bica was originally a cable car , but it’s now electrified; it runs like a tram. It goes all the way up to Bairro Alto.

Go up the street to see the tram at different points in the street. Don’t forget to look back after going up for a while, for a nice view over the river.

11 – Miradouro de Santa Catarina

We’ll end our Lisbon free walking tour by going to a miradouro ; the Miradouro de Santa Catarina is right next to the Bica street, only 2 minutes away.

The Best Things to do in Lisbon in Winter – Month to Month Guide

I did the Lisbon city center walking tour as you suggested and it was by far one of the best walking tours I have done. It took me through every single attraction I wanted to see. Now I am ready to do the Alfama tour as well. Yours is definitely one of the better self guided walking tours out there.

Thank you for the suggestions. I’m very excited to try them all. I’m planning to visit Portugal next year, possibly in the spring, to avoid major crowds. Do you recommend a good month to visit?

Hi Linda! I strongly recommend going on mid-May-June, or in the beginning of September. The weather is very good, so you’ll be able to stroll around the city and enjoy drinks on a terrace without sweating too much (July-August are very crowded and weather quite hot).

Why Travis Kelce Didn’t Fly Back to Europe for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Shows in Lisbon

preview for Taylor Swift’s Iconic Career Evolution

The NFL player was photographed with teammate Patrick Mahomes at the Dallas Mavericks vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves basketball game in Dallas on Sunday, May 26. Afterward, he was seen getting dinner with friends at the Mediterranean restaurant Saaya .

Swift spent her Sunday and Monday out of the spotlight. On Sunday, she posted an Instagram thanking the fans who watched her Friday and Saturday performances in Lisbon. She wrote , “It’s official, I left my 🤍 in Lisbon. My first time in Portugal and you all made me feel like I was right at home. I’ll seriously never forget the way you treated us, the overwhelming love and passion and hands in the air and dancing and how you screamed every lyric!! Muito obrigada 🇵🇹”

Swift will play two shows in Madrid, Spain, tomorrow and Thursday. On Sunday and Monday, she’ll perform in Lyon, France.

So when will Kelce meet up with her again? The couple hasn’t publicly shared their plans, but Kelce will be in Cannes, France, on June 20 to record an episode of his and Jason Kelce’s podcast, New Heights , during the Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity , Page Six reported last week. He could easily join Swift for her U.K. shows before or after that work commitment.

A source told Us Weekly on Thursday that Kelce does plan to go to Europe regularly to be with Swift. (He returned to the U.S. after the couple’s vacation in Lake Como, Italy in mid-May, skipping Swift’s Stockholm shows, which ran from May 17–19. On May 18, he was photographed in Kansas City hosting his music festival, Kelce Jam .)

“He wants to support her as much as he can while he can, so he’s going to [go] back and forth from the U.S. to Europe while he has the time,” the source explained. The couple has had a “wonderful time in Europe so far,” the insider added.

Feel the Grip

The Tour Flex Pro from Softspikes® in the key three forefoot spike locations and Silver Tornado spikes in the lateral and heel offer exceptional traction in all conditions and give your feet great grip on the ground when you’re going all out for the pin.

All-Round Response

We stitched an Air Zoom unit directly to the upper instead of being set into foam, so it responds to every step. A full-length plate beneath the Air unit helps increase energy return. Cushiony foam under the heel delivers a smooth ride.

Full-grain leather has a supple feel and sophisticated look, nodding to golf shoes from past generations.
