"It was a birthday gift to remember. Awesome choices, plenty of time to explore and enjoy the other options available. Our guide was very knowledgeable and I have made changes in what we look for in beers as well as how we drink it - always in a glass. Fun and cool"

Excellent Time Had By All

"The tour was great from beginning to end. Mark was an awesome guide. Perfect man for our group. We really enjoyed his knowledge of beer and history. All the brewery stops were good, but Bantam Cider was my favorite. Will definitely be back!"

History Meets Beer

"This tour was a great way to experience the city of Boston and see what various types of beer it has to offer. The tour guide was very informative and made the overall experience fun and enjoyable. Plus, who doesn't like to sample 15-18 beers in under 6 hours? Will definitely recommend this tour to friends!"

TOUR OPTIONS

Why is the tour fee so low?  Unlike most tours, we don't "build in" beverages to the tour cost. Often when doing so, options may be somewhat predetermined.  We'd rather keep the tour price low & give you greater choice in your selections.  Plus, some patrons may prefer NA options.

Probably the best tour we’ve ever had! Mike is so knowledgeable of Milwaukee – he made us fall in love this city. He drove us to hidden gems that we would have never found on our own. We were able to get out and walk around. It was perfect!

All the Brew tours were private tours which was a huge plus. The shuttle was clean, warm and we got front door drop off at all breweries. Can’t wait to this again!

Welcome to Milwaukee, also known as “Brew City,” – where the beer flows like the Milwaukee River (only drinkable 🙂)

With Milwaukee’s rich brewing history that includes big names like Miller, Pabst, and Schlitz, it’s no wonder Milwaukee has earned its reputation as a beer lover’s paradise.

But it’s not just the big names that make Milwaukee special. Over 25 craft breweries call Milwaukee home, each with a unique style and flavor.

And what better way to experience all this deliciousness than with a brewery tour? Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or simply like to enjoy a cold one a brewery tour is one of the best things to do in Milwaukee .

Over the years, we’ve been on quite a few brewery tours. Sometimes just for fun. And sometimes to show visiting friends and family how amazing the city of Milwaukee is.

Unfortunately, since Covid, the number of brewery tours available has decreased. But don’t worry, the best ones are still around.

So, here is a list of our favorite brewery tours in Milwaukee for you to explore. We’ll also include a list of available brewery tours, a few beer history tours, and tours where you’ll be guided through the city, stopping at multiple breweries.

Length: 45 min

# of Tastings: 4 – 8oz pours

If you can take only one brewery tour while in Milwaukee, Lakefront Brewery is what you are looking for.

Lakefront Brewery has been a Milwaukee staple since 1987. Founded by two beer-loving brothers, Russ and Jim Klisch, Lakefront Brewery has been bringing joy to Milwaukee with their delicious brews and fun atmosphere.

Not only do they have something for everyone (even those avoiding gluten), but their flagship beer, Riverwest Stein , is so popular it’s in almost every bar in Milwaukee.

But let’s be real. The best part of Lakefront Brewery is the tour. It’s like a 45-minute party, complete with fun facts, jokes, and of course, beer. You’ll get to sample four- 8oz pours of their finest brews and even take home a souvenir pint glass.

And if you ask most beer-loving Milwaukeans, they’ll tell you they’ve been on the Lakefront Brewery tour several times. It’s perfect for entertaining visitors. And even without visitors, the tour is simply a good old time shared with beer-loving friends.

Before or after the tour, don’t forget to hit up their beer hall for some delicious grub. And if you are lucky enough to be there on a Friday, their fish fry is one of the best in town.

If you aren’t hungry, take some time to bask in the beauty of their outdoor patio along the Milwaukee Riverfront.

The Lakefront Brewery Tour is a must-do for any Milwaukee resident or visitor.

Miller Brewing

Length: 1 hour

# of Tastings: 3 tastings

Touring a small craft brewery is fun, but seeing the enormous scale of a major brewery like Miller Brewing is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Walking through Miller Valley is like taking a stroll through beer heaven. From the old-school charm of the Miller Inn to the high-tech brewing facilities, you’ll see it all on this guided walking tour.

And of course, it’s not a Milwaukee tour without a beer in hand, so you’ll start with a cold one. Hey, it’s Wisconsin, what did you expect?

But the real highlight of the tour is the underground Miller caves. These things are so cool they’ll give you chills (literally). Plus, you’ll get to see the historic Bavarian-style Miller Inn and the ginormous modern operations of the Brew House, Packaging, and Distribution Centers.

All in all, the Miller Brewery Tour is a must-do for any beer lover visiting Milwaukee. It’ll leave you with a newfound appreciation for Milwaukee’s rich beer history.

Beer History Tours

Best place beer history tour.

Length: 1 – 1.5 hours

# of Tastings: 1 pint

If you’re a history buff who loves a good brew, the Best Place Beer History Tour is the bee’s knees . Trust us, it’s not your typical snooze-fest.

To kick things off, you’ll get a refreshing beer or soda. Then, get ready for a quick video on the history of Best Brewery, which later became the iconic Pabst Brewery.

The tour takes you through some of the remaining buildings that once made up the Pabst Brewery complex, and let me tell you, the folks at Best Place have done an amazing job restoring them. It’s like stepping back in time, but with better beer.

And don’t miss your chance to sit at Captain Pabst’s desk in the main wedding hall. You might just feel like a captain yourself (no judgment here).

But let’s be real, the show’s real stars are the tour guides. They’re witty, funny, and know their stuff when it comes to the story of Pabst beer. You’ll learn all about how it rose to fame, fell from grace, and then made a triumphant comeback to become the beloved brand it is today.

So, come for the beer, stay for the history, and soak up the friendly Gemütlichkeit. This tour is a must-do for anyone looking for an entertaining and educational experience. Prost!

Where to Stay in Milwaukee – A Locally Curated Guide

Pabst Mansion Length: 1 hour

If you’re looking for a true taste of German Milwaukee , look no further than the Pabst Mansion. It’s the real deal, y’all.

This preserved 1890s Gilded Age Mansion is a must-visit for anyone who loves history and beer (which, let’s be honest, is basically everyone in Milwaukee).

Once home to Captain Pabst, his wife, and a whopping 10 children (though only 5 made it to adulthood), this place is steeped in history. And we’re not talking about the boring kind of history you snoozed through in school. We’re talking juicy details that will make you feel like you’re part of the Pabst family.

Now, you can do a self-guided tour, but we highly recommend the guided tour. Why? Because the tour guides are passionate about the history, and they’ll give you all the deets you wouldn’t get on a self-guided tour.

The guided tour takes you through the first through third floors of the mansion and shares everything you could want to know about the Pabst Mansion, the Pabst family, and the incredible architecture and furnishings of the home. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this.

So, come get your history and beer fix all in one place at the Pabst Mansion. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the German Milwaukee experience.

Length of Tour: 2.5 – 3 hours

Alright, beer-loving friends, I’ve got the inside scoop on one of Milwaukee’s best-kept secrets : Fun Beer Tours. These tours are truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

Fun Beer Tours keeps its prices low by letting you choose your own drinks and snacks. That way, you can customize your experience and try all the beers your heart desires. And for all the non-drinkers out there, you won’t have to pay for someone else’s suds.

And can we talk about the options? Fun Beer Tours has tours that cater to every interest. Whether you’re all about the beer or want to learn some Milwaukee history too, they’ve got you covered.

Choose from the “Beer is Famous Tour” or the “Beer + Everything Else Tour” and prepare to have a blast. You can even ask them to create a specialized tour for a group outing like a bachelor or bachelorette party.

But the real star of the show is your guide, Paul. He’s not just a beer history buff, he’s a craft brewery co-founder, collector of historic brewery artifacts, and a 30-year history teacher. Let’s just say he knows his stuff.

So, if you’re looking for a fun and unique way to experience Milwaukee’s beer culture, Fun Beer Tours is the way to go. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

10 Must-Visit Milwaukee Breweries in Wisconsin (Map Included)

Looking for the best Milwaukee breweries to visit?

Affectionately known as “Brew City”, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has a very long history (nearly two centuries-long) with brewing beer: Miller Brewing Company, Pabst Brewing Company, and Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company all claim Milwaukee as home.

While doing a brewery tour in Milwaukee has to be on every beer drinkers’ bucket list, it might be at breweries you didn’t expect given Milwaukee’s history with these major brewers.

Milwaukee’s craft beer scene has been fermenting over the past several years and its popularity has grown significantly, proving that craft brewers can survive in the shadows of the big boys.

You just need a thirsty city.

Short on time?  Here are the key takeaways:

  • In our opinion, do not miss Eagle Park. To this day, we rank it in our top 10 favorite breweries in the U.S.
  • Lakefront Brewery has the best tour ever. Also, they have gluten free beer that is quite good.
  • MobCraft was the world’s first crowd sourced brewery ever and their beers are just as original.

Overview of Breweries in Milwaukee

We spent 3 days in downtown Milwaukee and constructed our own brewery-hopping tour of Brew City.

As you might expect, when deciding on a game plan for a brewery tour in Milwaukee, you are going to have plenty of choices.

However, the cheapest and most flexible option is to do a self-guided brewery tour of numerous breweries and the surrounding neighborhoods!

Getting Around

Milwaukee is an easy-to-navigate city that has plenty of ride sharing options.

Milwaukee also has a fleet of streetcars, called The Hop, that motors around downtown. This is an ode to beer and the hop-on, hop-off style of the streetcar. This is FREE to ride and a great option for getting around. See the route map and schedule here .

Current stops aren’t super close to the numerous breweries in the city, but there is an expansion planned to extend service to a wider area, which would be closer to the breweries.

This truly gives “brewery hopping” a whole new meaning.

German Hall Milwaukee

How many breweries are in Milwaukee Wisconsin?

There are over 20 breweries in Milwaukee.

What is the famous beer in Milwaukee?

Depending on your age, the most famous beer in Milwaukee might differ. Schlitz, PBR, and Miller High Life are among the most infamous beers brewed in Milwaukee.

Brew City Beer Pass

Visit Milwaukee has a Beer City Beer Pass that will reward you for sipping some local suds. Places include breweries, taprooms, and other beer-related attractions.

Sign up for the Brew City Beer Pass to redeem Buy One, Get One (BOGO) beers while you hop around to different breweries.

Lakefront brewery - milwaukee brewery

  • Monday – Thursday: 3 PM – 9 PM
  • Friday & Saturday: 11 AM – 9 PM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 5 PM
  • Food Available: Yes

Consistently ranked as one of the top brewery tours in the country, Lakefront Brewery is a great place to start your Milwaukee brewery adventure.

First, you’ll definitely want to get a reservation for this tour.

We also suggest arriving at least 1 hour early or plan on staying after to eat here since there food was sensational!

We started with a large helping of fried cheese curds (supposedly some of Milwaukee’s best cheese curds – we won’t argue), a sausage flight (yes, it’s a thing – but probably only in Milwaukee), and a side of more cheese (in the form of mac and cheese).

lakefront food Milwaukee

When you check-in for the tour, you are given 2 beer tokens (good for 16 oz pours each) and a souvenir pint glass.

Our advice for token usage:

  • 1 token to fill your cup before the tour starts
  • 1 token to have during the tour for a mid-tour refill or after

The tour itself only takes about 45 minutes with a brief break in the middle for a refill. There are no bathrooms on the tour so be sure to go before it begins.

With tons of jokes (some cheesy and some mildly inappropriate, but hilarious) sprinkled in among the historical information about Lakefront, the Milwaukee brewery scene, and the brewing process, this tour is worth every penny!

The tour is $16 (which is highly recommended).

Fun facts: Lakefront was the first brewery in the U.S. to bottle a fruit beer since Prohibition (brewed a cherry lager in 1992) and produced the first certified organic beer in 1996.

Today, they have produced the first gluten-free beer after successfully petitioning the US government to allow their New Grist to actually be called beer since it did not contain the previously required 25% malted barley content.

In our opinion, this is a must visit when deciding on which Milwaukee breweries to visit!

2. Eagle Park Brewing

eagle park - milwaukee breweries

  • Monday – Friday: 3 PM – 10 PM
  • Saturday: 11 AM – 10 PM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 9 PM

Eagle Park Brewing is one of our favorite Milwaukee breweries and a must do when hopping around.

We arrived just before they opened and were surprised to see a line of about 20 people already waiting to get in the doors.  (Although, we were not surprising after we tasted the beer.)

We found out later that they have a pretty incredible, and exclusive, beer club (by paid membership only) so the line made a little more sense with a beer release.

In addition to the beer club, we were absolutely blown away by the beer and had to indulge in 2 flights.

The beers are explosive with flavor and we were left wanting more with every sip.

We highly suggest these if they have them on tap:

  • Bahama Mama sour
  • Tropical Slush sour
  • Vegan Pineapple Upside Down Cake Milkshake IPA
  • No Snickity No Stout

Really, just try as many of their beers as you can because their craft is truly unique and amazing!

3. Good City Brewing

good life brewery in Milwaukee

  • Monday – Saturday: 11 AM – 10 PM

Good City Brewing has two convenient locations when visiting the breweries in Milwaukee.

Their original location is located in the East Side of the city while their downtown location is – you guessed it – downtown, right across from the Fiserv Forum.

When you step inside of the taproom, you’ll immediately feel like you’re part of the brewing process as you can see the exposed tanks and piping right behind the bar.

Saddle up to the bar and have some of their mainstays like the Motto pale ale or the Spare Time hazy IPA.

If you’re really feeling frisky, grab the Audacity, a 10.4% rum and port barrel-aged Belgian quad.  It’s just as flavorful and powerful as it sounds!

4. Dead Bird Brewing

Dead bird brewery - milwaukee

  • Thursday & Friday: 3 PM – 9 PM
  • Saturday: 12 PM – 9 PM
  • Sunday: 12 PM – 6 PM
  • Monday – Wednesday: Closed

Dead Bird Brewing specialize in beers with an emphasis on locally-sourced, vegan ingredients.

Started in 2015 by two college roommates, they named the brewery Dead Bird because they literally found a dead bird in an aluminum pot in an attic. Don’t worry, they did not use this pot for brewing the beer.

Their taproom opened in 2019 and is located in the Brewer’s Hill neighborhood of Milwaukee. They also have a food menu with items such as chips and salsa, beer pretzel, tacos and BBQ with vegan options as well.

They offer live music every Saturday and usually have a cider on tap too. Sundays, they offer brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Don’t miss the brunch cocktail flight.

If you need to be entertained while you drink, they have numerous arcade games as well as shuffle board in the taproom.

5. MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom

mob craft brewery 2

  • Sunday – Thursday: 11 AM – 10 PM
  • Friday & Saturday: 11 AM – 11 PM

MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom is the world’s first crowdsourced brewery.

What is a crowdsourced brewery exactly?

Well, each month, MobCraft sources ideas from the crowd (duh) for the next batch of craft Milwaukee beer.

People from all over the country/world can submit ideas – anything from flavors to a full-fledged recipe.

The good, and realistic, ones are voted on each month on the website.

How does it work? Your vote is actually you placing a pre-order for the beer you want brewed.

From there, it’s pretty simple, at least on paper: the beer with the most votes wins and is brewed, packaged, and available for pickup at the brewery. Such a cool concept!

Even with the ever-rotating recipes coming through, they still do have some flagships, including Bat$h!t Crazy (coffee brown ale), Low pHunk (sour ale), and Vanilla Wafer Porter, among a few others.

6. Broken Bat Brewery

broken bat Milwaukee

  • Monday – Thursday: 3 PM – 10 PM
  • Friday: 12 PM – 10 PM
  • Saturday: 12 PM – 10 PM
  • Sunday: 12 PM – 7 PM
  • Food Available: No

For a city whose baseball team is literally named the Brewers, it should come as no surprise that there is a baseball-themed brewery in the Historic Third Ward.

Located in a cozy basement with sightlines into the compact brewery operations, Broken Bat Brewery cleverly names all of its beers after something baseball-related.

From Straight Chedd (an apricot pale ale) to Golden Sombrero pilsner and the Darryl (a strawberry kettle sour), any baseball fan should add this stop to the top of their Milwaukee breweries list.

If you’re a baseball nut like Chris, you’ll enjoy the baseball references.  If you’re not, you’ll just enjoy some good beer!

7. Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery

Milwaukee breweries - king and Chris

Just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road is where you’ll find a more historical nod to Pabst Brewing:  Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery .

While it might sound like a funny name, it’s actually Jacob Best Sr., who established the original brewery in 1844, hence the “Best”.

The Pabst brewery was closed in 1996 dealing a huge blow to Milwaukee beer, but since Best Place has opened, it has done its “best” to rekindle the charm and history of this place.

You can take a tour for $14, which includes one beer, and you’ll see many of the old offices that were used in the old days and hear all about the history of the brewery.

If you’re not a history buff or short on time, just grab a beer in the little tavern and munch on some pretzels at The Guest Center. It’s worth noting that most of their venues are for private functions and no open to the public.

Make sure you snap the obligatory pictures in each courtyard with Captain Pabst himself and King Gambrinus, a legendary European culture hero celebrated as an icon of beer.

8. Milwaukee Brewing Company

mke beer Milwaukee

In September 2022, Eagle Park Brewing (listed above) has acquired Milwaukee Brewing Company , affectionately known as MKE Brewery.

They purchasing rights to the recipes, brand and all other goodies that come with owning a brewery.

In our opinion though, this is another must-do in the line up of Milwaukee breweries once they are back up and running in their new taproom on Hamilton Street.

While there are a lot of changes ahead for MKE, their high quality beers are here to stay.

Be on the lookout for their year-round beers such as” Louie’s Demise (an amber ale), Outboard (cream ale), and MKE IPA.

In November 2023, they relaunched their tours of the facility. We can’t speak to the new tour but the old one was insane with the amount of samples and pours available. These appear to be only offered on Fridays at 1, 2, or 3 PM and are $20 per person.

9. Third Space Brewing

third space

  • Monday – Thursday: 4 PM – 9 PM
  • Friday: 2 PM – 10 PM

Situated a few minutes west of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, Third Space Brewing is helping the resurgence of the downtown corridor of Milwaukee.

With a spacious outside beer garden and large indoor seating area, Third Space is helping to pave the way for all Milwaukee breweries.

In 2018, Third Space won a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the Imperial IPA category for Unbridled Enthusiasm Juicy Double IPA.

They are the first of the numerous Wisconsin breweries to win a medal at this festival for an IPA!

They also won a silver medal for Unite the Clans in the Rye beer category at the 2019 festival, the third year in a row that this beer was awarded a medal.

Third Space has a good mix of sours, pale ales, and barley wines to try and make sure you keep an eye out for their dessert beers. They are incredible!

10. Water Street Brewery

water street Milwaukee

  • Tuesday & Wednesday: 4 PM – 10 PM
  • Thursday & Sunday: 11 AM – 10 PM
  • Monday: Closed

Water Street Brewery opened in 1987, staking claim to being Milwaukee’s first brewpub.

Today, they have four locations in Downtown Milwaukee, Grafton, Delafield/Lake Country and Oak Creek.

To be completely honest, the beer here didn’t blow us away, but all of the beers we got in our flight were refreshing. The beers here are true to form style meaning their lager tastes like a lager.  They seemed to be restaurant first and beer second mentality.

They have several house brews on tap (including a Bavarian Weiss and an Oktoberfest – how traditionally German of them) as well as various seasonals, all of which are brewed at each particular location.

Water Street also boasts an impressive collection beer and brewing artifacts, including thousands of beer cans arranged in displays, beer taps, neon signs, and other brewery-related knick-knacks.

Unless you want a full bar / restaurant, we suggest visiting other breweries in Milwaukee instead if you are short on time.

Bonus Stops

Old german beer hall.

sam and old german beer hall milwaukee

  • 7 days a week; Open 11 AM – Close

As we alluded to, Milwaukee has deep German roots which is very evident by the architecture of the buildings downtown.

According to the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee (who knew that was a thing?), “Milwaukee is the most German of major American cities, and Germans have constituted Milwaukee’s largest immigrant group.

The city’s brewing industry, tradition of ethnic festivals, built environment, and history of working-class politics all display the influence of the German immigrants who arrived in especially large numbers during the half-century following 1850.”

Well, The Old German Beer Hall embodies the spirit of Germany and represents the tradition of Munich’s legendary Hofbräuhaus, complete with the traditional Hofbräu beer in large liters – perfect for guzzling and cheersing (Prost!).

You can also partake in a game that we’ve only ever seen at NASCAR tailgates. We call it “Stump” here in the South or “ Hammerschlagen ” in Germany (and Milwaukee).

The idea of the game is to hit a nail into a massive tree stump with a hammer (which is thankfully attached to a chain).

SafeHouse

safehouse Milwaukee

  • Monday – Thursday: 11 AM – 10 PM
  • Friday & Saturday: 11 AM – 12 AM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 8 PM

If you’re looking for something fun and unique, if not altogether touristy, head to SafeHouse .

Tucked away in an the alley from the Bronze Fonz and in a relatively unmarked building, SafeHouse is like a speakeasy on the outside, and anything but a speakeasy on the inside.

Look below 3 flags and behind the door faintly marked International Exports.

You’ll need to know the password to get in, otherwise you’ll have to do something corny (think “do your best ninja move” or something similar) to prove you’re there for a good time!

Even better, the entrance is shown on CCTV inside the bar for everyone to see (though no one seemed to be watching at all).

Once inside, you’ll feel like you’re in a spy movie.

All the employees call you “Agent” and act as if you’re a spy.

The drinks are all spy-themed (and a little pricey), but the actual bar/restaurant itself has numerous rooms to mill in and out of while trying to find answers to various spy clues.

safehouse Milwaukee 2

We opted for two of the spy-themed cocktails and roamed around all of the rooms looking at all of the spy memorabilia.

I’m sure we were interrupting people while they were eating dinner, but they didn’t seem to mind as this place was sensory-overload!

When you’ve completed your mission and are ready to head out, you can go out the secret exit in a phone booth if you wish, but it’ll cost you $1.

Or just go out the way you came in, though a spy never leaves the same way they entered.

If you really want the password to get in and loathe doing something silly, google is your best friend.

Great Lakes Distillery

Great Lakes Distillery Milwaukee

  • Monday – Thursday: 12 PM – 9 PM
  • Friday: 12 PM – 12 AM
  • Saturday: 11 AM – 12 AM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 7 PM

Great Lakes Distillery , the first distillery in Wisconsin since Prohibition, is located about a mile south of downtown Milwaukee in Walker’s Point (about a 10-minute ride for scooter-fanatic Samantha).

The folks here are using local ingredients and old-world methods to create their high-quality lineup of spirits.

Numerous varieties of vodka, gin, liqueur, whiskey, rum, brandy, absinthe, and various seasonal spirits are all available for you to sample and/or in one of their many cocktails.

Great Lakes’ spirits have won numerous awards at prestigious competitions, including the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Sightseeing stops

fonz chris Milwaukee

The statue, or the Bronze Fonz as it’s called, is located on the Riverwalk and is a quick stop on your way to SafeHouse or just on a stroll around the river.

The 1970s TV show “Happy Days” took place in Milwaukee and the statue was commissioned to help bring tourism to the city in 2008 with the show’s cast present at the unveiling.

Stop by for a quick picture and give your best thumbs up!

Wisconsin Cheese Mart

cheese mart Milwaukee

The Wisconsin Cheese Mart is a must-do in this cheese-crazed town.

Located in the heart of downtown and across the street from all the bars on Old World Third Street, you will find a cheese shop which, according to their website, has been the world’s largest selection of Wisconsin cheese since 1938.

Some fun facts:  There are over 35,000 dairy farms selling milk in Wisconsin (almost 2 million cows producing about 14,000 pounds of milk each year)….that equates to a lot of cheese.

In fact, about 74% of this Wisconsin milk is used in the production of cheese.

2 billion pounds of cheese every year, that is, or 30% of the nation’s total cheese production!

With more than 250 varieties, types, and styles of cheese available at the Cheese Mart (many of which you can sample!), this is a no-brainer stop on your visit to Milwaukee.

If you buy cheese, they even provide you with an ice pack to keep it cold while traveling, and will provide a travel cooler if you purchase a certain amount.

Where to eat in Milwaukee

The wicked hop.

bloody mary milwaukee

When you know it’s going to be a long day of drinking all the Milwaukee beer and spirits, a hearty brunch is always a good start.

Located in the Historic Third Ward at the corner of Sunday Brunch and Bloody Mary (not really, it’s actually St. Paul & Broadway, but the sign outside says otherwise), The Wicked Hop boasts some very good food and one of the best Bloody Marys in Milwaukee.

You’ll find most of your traditional brunch favorites here (eggs benedict, French toast, chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos) but the real star is the Bloody Mary.

Complete with a peeled shrimp, beef stick, kosher dill pickle, mozzarella cheese whips, a portabella mushroom, a Spanish green olive, and a Lakefront Riverwest Stein beer chaser, this spicy Bloody is a meal in itself!

Milwaukee wicked hop 2

We aren’t the biggest fans of Bloodys (gasp, we know), so don’t consider us connoisseurs by any means, but this Bloody has won “Best Drink in Milwaukee” for 4 straight years.  That’s gotta be good for something.

Milwaukee loves its brunch and loves its Bloody Mary’s even more, so look around for others which might tickle your fancy.  Some of them are really out there!

We were told to head to Sobelmans, but ran out of time before we made it there – guess we’ll be back!

Milwaukee Public Market

public market Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Public Market is located directly across the street from The Wicked Hop and was a perfect opportunity for us to walk around for a few minutes and let our brunch and Bloody settle.

Here’s just a sample of the types of vendors you’ll find at this bustling market: coffee, Thai, Mexican, fish, olive oil, soups, salads, pizzas, vegan options, bakery, chocolates, cheese shop, wine shop, and even a tap truck just outside pouring the delicious Milwaukee beer.

Guaranteed that you can find something here! Once you do, head upstairs to eat while looking out over the organized chaos below.

Café Benelux

Milwaukee cafe benelux

This was one of Samantha’s favorite spots due to its Belgium-themed menu and beer selection.

With over 40 pages of craft beer on the menu, Café Benelux is an excellent (and massive) place to find a good beer and eat some great food.

We opted for brunch food and we were very satisfied with our choices. Samantha’s current go-to for brunch food is Eggs Benedict and she was incredibly happy with her selection.

Chris, ever the beer and cheese lover (even more so when they are mixed), chose the ham and beer cheese omelet.

Where to stay Milwaukee

Booking.com probably has the widest selection of budget (and luxury) accommodations in the world. In our experience, they consistently found the cheapest rooms. We also like their easy to use interface and no money down policy. When we book our travel stays, we personally use booking.com.

Milwaukee is a relatively compact city and everywhere we went was about a 5-8 minute car ride, a 10-minute scooter ride, or a 20-minute walk. >>> For a full list of hotels in the area, CLICK HERE.

Centrally Located – Hyatt Regency

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency since it was centrally located and was in the middle of the breweries we wanted to visit (see the map above for reference). We have stayed at several Hyatts before this one was just as nice.

>>>>Book your stay here now!

Unique stay – Brewhouse Inn and Suites

This old brewhouse was renovated for a hotel! Talk about going all in on a beer weekend in Milwaukee. Located directly across from Pabst and a block away from MKE Brewing, this hotel is a nice choice on the outskirts of the city.

Homewood Suites By Hilton Milwaukee Downtown

If being central and being near a food hall is your kind of place, then look no further than Homewood Suites. Just a block off the water and near the Milwaukee Public Market, this hotel is a good suite option for in the city.

Slightly south – The Iron Horse Hotel

Located in the southern end of the city, this hotel is walkable to a distillery and a handful of breweries. Known for it’s modern and chic room décor, the rooms are spacious and they are pet friendly.

fonz and sam

If you’re planning on visiting Brew City and creating your own self-guided brewery tour in Milwaukee, remember to pack your drinkin’ shoes.

While the big brewers like Pabst and Miller are mainstays in the Milwaukee beer scene, craft beer is alive and well here and crafting new favorites with old world twists.

With such a short time in the city, we know we missed a lot.

Frozen custard is definitely a Milwaukee thing as Milwaukee has the highest concentration of frozen custard shops in the world, but we just didn’t have enough stomach space (or time) to make it to one of these shops.

Also, while at the airport on our way out, we made sure to indulge in a Wisconsin-style Old Fashioned, which is your typical Old Fashioned, but with brandy instead of whiskey.

Chris really enjoyed it and will be making these again at home.

All in all, we had a great weekend and enjoyed some fantastic Milwaukee breweries and beers. We highly suggest a weekend getaway to Milwaukee (or longer if you have the time).

P.S.  W e were always drinking Wisconsibly.  W e did this self-guided tour at a reasonable pace, shared flights and drinks, drank water at every place, and ate frequently.

Always drink responsibly. Never drink and drive (this includes scootering).

beer tours in milwaukee

Before Luke Combs plays in front of the 'best fans' for his Milwaukee concerts this week, he tours Miller Brewery and even shotguns a beer

B efore Luke Combs kicks off his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour in Milwaukee this week, he went on another kind of tour. One that is quintessentially Brew City.

Combs, one of country music's biggest stars, is playing two shows at American Family Field : One Friday and another Saturday. But ahead of that, he took a tour of the Miller Brewery . And, we got to tag along.

Yes, he was every bit as kindhearted, down-to-earth and genuine as he seems. And yes, he shotgunned a beer just like he does on stage. Except this time, he was hanging out on a brewhouse rooftop with the iconic giant red Miller sign and the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark as his backdrop.

Get daily updates on the Packers during the season.

Not only did Combs — a longtime Miller Lite fan and years-long partner — see where the magic happens, he also checked out the specialty packaging on cases and cans that's coming out in honor of his blockbuster tour.

"It's just surreal, you know?" Combs told the Journal Sentinel. "I feel like I get to live so many amazing, surreal moments. And, I'm really thankful for that for sure. It's crazy. It's crazy."

Here's what we learned about Combs' tour and what he got into on the Miller tour. And, how about his eight Academy of Country Music Awards nominations that were announced earlier this week? We asked him about those, too.

Luke Combs talks about his 'Growin' Up and Gettin' Old' tour and why he's kicking it off in the Midwest

A or A+ shows don't cut it for Combs. He's shooting for A++.

"I try to do everything I can do to take care of my voice, take care of myself, make sure that we're doing everything we can," Combs said. "People that come are the only reason we get to do what we do. Putting on an A++ show is really important to me."

About to embark on his 25-date stadium tour, he's excited — and "a little nervous."

"You feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain and you're looking at the top a little bit," he said.

But after last year's "Luke Combs World Tour," he said he feels more prepared for what's ahead of him.

"We've played everywhere all over the world," Combs said. "But, the Midwest, it feels like home to me. So, good place to start it."

HOW TO AVOID TRAFFIC: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend

Combs, who grew up in North Carolina, hadn't been anywhere close to Milwaukee when he started his music career — his first plane ride came at age 25. But, he remembers his earlier stops up here fondly.

He opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made an appearance at Farm Aid at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

"The Midwest is like the best fans in the world," Combs said. "I mean, honestly. People probably say that all the time."

But, that doesn't mean pulling out of the driveway Tuesday night wasn't hard after the "amazing" time he spent with his "awesome" wife Nicole and their two sons — Tex and Beau — these past few months. Fortunately, he won't have to miss his other half too long. She'll be headed up this way this weekend.

What will always make it onto Combs' setlist this time around? "The songs that people would expect," Combs shared.

"Playing all the hits," he said. "That's why people are there, and I want to give them what they want."

But, each night of the tour will have a different vibe.

Combs' opening acts Friday — in the order they'll hit the stage — are the Wilder Blue, Charles Wesley Godwin and Cody Jinks.

"Friday's more in the Americana, singer-songwriter world," Combs said. "So, our set reflects that a little bit. But, obviously, still playing all the hits."

Saturday's openers will be Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

"Saturday night is more mainstream, Top 40 country stuff, which is what I do, really," Combs said.

Combs loves watching Jinks and Davis perform — they keep him honest, he said — and he knows they're going to kick some you know what.

The first opener will start at 5:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tailgating will be permitted. Give yourself plenty of time to drive in and get through security.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. Saturday with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at Am Fam Field's Third Base Plaza, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase.

Luke Combs' love for Miller Lite and his visit to Miller Brewery

After getting into Milwaukee Wednesday morning, Combs hung out at the Brewers stadium for a couple of hours, worked out, then was off to the Miller Brewery.

How long has Combs been a fan of Miller Lite? "Forever, probably."

"My dad's been drinking it for a long time," Combs said. "It was always around the house."

If his music career never worked out, he said, he would still be sporting a Columbia fishing shirt and drinking a Miller Lite somewhere in the world.

"That's what I would be doing anyways," he said. "So, I really wanted to go after things that I was already passionate about that felt natural and authentic to me. So, I'm very thankful for (Molson Coors) being receptive to have me on board. I feel super lucky."

Sporting a Brewers Barrelman hat, Combs and his team walked into a conference room on the brewery's complex Wednesday. He was met by a small group of longtime brewery employees and other Molson Coors staffers. The beer cases and cans with his new specialty packaging were displayed on tables.

The design features a ribbon that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart" wrapped in between the tuning pegs of a guitar. Combs' name is at the top of the headstock.

After everyone went around the room introducing themselves, they were instructed to suit up in PPE — yellow safety vests, glasses, hard hats, toe caps and headsets.

On Combs' VIP tour of the brewery, he got a first-hand — and at times, hands-on — look at the operations with facts and history lessons along the way.

The first stop was a packaging plant, where Combs met machinist Jeff Malecki who has "But they ain't seen us together" from Combs' song "Forever After All" tattooed across his arm.

The two shook hands and got a picture together. That would become a reoccurring scene throughout Combs' visit.

It seemed like every employee who crossed paths with Combs received a handshake. And, if they wanted a photo or autograph, they got those, too, without any hesitation.

In the warehouse, Combs saw cases with the specialty packaging sliding out of a machine — he pulled his phone out to document that — and stacks of those cases getting carried off on a pallet via forklift.

At one point, Combs stood in front of what looked like a mountain of the cases. "Get this one," he said to a photographer as he hugged the cases as far as his arms would stretch.

Later, he'd get to snag one of the cans right off of a quick-moving line.

He got a taste of that and a few different brewery roles, including one that involved flipping a cardboard box filled with unconstructed cases into place. A few cases snuck out the back, but not too shabby for a first-timer.

"Thanks for letting me do that," Combs said to the workers as he shook their hands. "Thanks for letting me be in the way."

Combs also tried his hand at adding hops, one of which was liquid. "Have y'all seen 'Superbad'?" Combs asked with a bucket of hops in hand.

It reminded him of the scene when McLovin was trying to buy booze at a liquor store and said to the cashier: "You know, I heard they recently decided to add more hops to it."

Toward the conclusion of the tour, Combs said he had a "truly amazing" time. But, his favorite part had to be the grand finale.

He got to go up on a brewhouse rooftop with striking views of the city, the home of the Brewers and that big red Miller sign.

Up there is where he shotgunned a beer in under 5 seconds, and had the honor of sampling an exclusive maturation stock that not many get to try.

"To be standing up here is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Combs said.

How about those eight ACM Awards nominations

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this week. Combs leads the nominations with eight , including entertainer of the year, male artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year, single of the year and music event of the year.

"It's really awesome," he said. "Always surprising, I think ... In a lot of ways, it feels like I've been doing this a lifetime. And, in a lot of ways, I feel like I've been doing it for six months. So, I feel like sometimes I'm so conflicted with knowing what to feel or think ... It's an honor. It's my wildest dreams coming true. So, I'm a very lucky guy every day."

A 2024 win via Combs nomination for entertainer of the year would clinch the coveted triple crown award, which consists of an entertainer of the year win plus wins in an act's respective new artist (male, female, duo, or group) and artist (male, female, duo or group) categories, a USA TODAY report said.

The event will air on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on May 16.

Milwaukee Menus Showcase Foraged Feasts

Ramps, morels, fiddlehead ferns and more. Plus: Four new restaurants opening.

Milwaukee restaurants have long been known for a dedication to farm-to-table fare, with menus changing seasonally to highlight peak produce — stone fruits for summer, squash in the fall, winter root vegetables for the chillier days.

But spring brings some of the most highly anticipated ingredients, many of which which have fleeting windows of availability.

As a result, some chefs are known to forage for their favorites, later showcasing the fruits (and roots, flowers and fungi) of their labor in hyper-seasonal dishes.

Throughout April and May, the ingredients of the hour are ramps, members of the allium family with a mild, garlicky taste; fiddlehead ferns, a crunchy, coiled veggie with a flavor akin to asparagus; and morel mushrooms, which are notoriously elusive and equally expensive.

Other popular — though less buzzy — spring darlings include asparagus, sumac, sugar snap peas, violets, fava beans, radishes and more. Many of these items have already made their way onto menus in Milwaukee. Here’s where to find them:

Ramps are featured prominently across the menu at Birch , showing up in the restaurant’s fazzoletti, grilled flatbread, ember-roasted walleye, chicken under a brick and charred beef carpaccio, where its flavor mingles with blue cheese and mizuna, a peppery plant native to Japan.

Meanwhile, Amilinda  is incorporating ramps into its halibut dish alongside fennel, rhubarb, kumquats and Meyer lemon aioli.

You’ll also find ramps at Bavette La Boucherie , where they’re incorporated into pistou (a sauce similar to pesto) and served alongside seared snapper. The restaurant is also serving a white asparagus starter with morel vinaigrette.

The latest “chef snack” at 1033 also features morels, used as a base for charred Ibérico Secreto. The dish is punched up with white asparagus, fava beans and a ramp-piquillo pepper chimichurri.

Both ramps and morels will make an appearance at the upcoming Rising Stars pop-up dinner , scheduled for April 29 at Amilinda.

Featured chef Jesse Wendell plans to serve smoked nettle dao xiao mian (knife-cut) noodles with ramp shacha (a savory-spicy Chinese condiment), pickled ramps, soy-marinated morels, chili crisp and fried shallots.

Morel , a restaurant in Walker’s Point, is an obvious spot to seek out the popular fungi. The eatery plans to host its annual installment of morel-focused dinners in late May. Morels are also featured on the regular menu, starring in a comforting fricassee that’s served over creamy polenta.

Fiddlehead ferns have gotten a slow start, but will soon be hitting the menu at Honeypie Cafe .

Continue to keep an eye out for springtime ingredients at seasonally-focused restaurants including The Diplomat , Odd Duck , EsterEv , Goodkind , Braise and others.

Third Space Introducing New THC Beverage

Third Space Brewing Company is taking its roster of marijuana-adjacent drinks to new heights. The craft brewery will soon add a new product to its Head Space collection — a line of THC-infused sparkling waters — but the latest addition will come with double the dose. The non-alcoholic drink features lemon-lime flavoring, Citra Hops and 10 milligrams of Delta-9 THC — a legal product in Wisconsin derived from cannabis (hemp). It joins the existing, five-milligram version, which is grapefruit flavored and contains El Dorado Hops. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1597238472710-0'); }); The 10-milligram drink is set to launch this Saturday, April 20, coinciding with 420 Day and a celebratory music festival, High Notes, to be held at the brewery’s Milwaukee taproom, 1505 W. St Paul Ave.

L’incontro Brings Italian Cuisine to East Side

April has been a fruitful month for restaurant openings in Milwaukee, with at least eight new establishments bursting onto the scene in recent weeks. L’incontro added one more to that total when it opened Wednesday, but it hopes to stand out from the crowd. The new restaurant, 2315 N. Murray Ave. , features a menu of Italian dishes with hints of global inspiration. It fills a space most recently occupied by Tavolino . The early spring debut also coincides perfectly with the window of availability for buzzy ingredients such as ramps, fiddlehead ferns and pea tendrils — all of which were on the table for opening day. Featured dishes include sisig pizza, a riff on the Filipino dish with longganisa sausage, jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, white sauce and salsa verde — all piled onto a crisp-chewy crust. More traditional pizza varieties, including pepperoni, Margherita, marinara and funghi, are also available.

Third Coast Gourmet Opens in Third Ward

Third Coast Gourmet has dropped anchor on Water Street. The new deli and sandwich shop, nestled inside the Historic Third Ward ‘s Renaissance Building, opened its doors to the public last week. On the menu, guests can expect an assortment of soups, salads and sandwiches featuring Boar’s Head meats and cheeses exclusively. The counter-service establishment, 309 N. Water St. , also serves craft beverages including beer, wine and soda.

The Knick Offers Good Food, Lovely Views

You will not find a better place on Milwaukee’s eastside for people watching or gazing at the lake than a seat on the Knick’s front porch. The restaurant is located on the lower level of the elegant Knickerbocker Hotel which was built in the 1920s to provide residential apartments for the wealthy. Look for the entrance to the restaurant east of the green awning that leads to the hotel. Once inside The Knick , check out the frequent seasonal decorations and the highly unusual multi-colored chandeliers that add a decorative touch to the dining room. If you come for Sunday brunch, as I did twice recently, you will find the Mary Bloody Mary or the Queen Mary, a fine way to begin your meal. For these bloodies, they use a “Secret Homemade Bloody Mary Mix” with just the right balance of tomato and Tabasco. If you want a fancy drink, order the Queen, a monster bloody topped with Blackened Shrimp, Pepperoncini, Pepper-Jack Cheese, Pickles, and Olives. Both drinks are presented with beer chasers. You can also have a Mimosa or a N/A drink including Ginger Beer, Sprecher Soda, or Blackberry Ginger, Ginger Beer and Blackberry Puree. After my Sunday Brunches, I left more than a few dishes behind that I anticipate for future visits because everything friends and I ordered was a home run. The Andouille Sausage Omelette with pepper-jack cheese and pico de gallo was stuffed with so much sausage that its three eggs barely contained the meat. The accompanying potatoes were just-out-of-the-fryer crisp on the outside and creamy inside. In my opinion, they were perfect, if that is a possible achievement for the lowly potato.

Paloma Opens Bay View Restaurant

Over the course of eight months, the commercial space at 2154 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. has transformed from a gray box to a crayon box. The formerly vacant space at the ground level of KinetiK is now the vibrant and colorful home of Paloma Taco and Tequila , which opened its doors to the public on Wednesday. It’s the second location for the taqueria; its flagship restaurant has been open in Washington Heights since July 2020. The new restaurant, designed with help from Three Sixty , is positively saturated in color — from its kaleidoscopic wallpaper and sunshine-colored chairs to its pendant lights suspended from a turquoise-washed ceiling.

Scooter’s Coffee Opens First Milwaukee Location

Scooter’s has officially arrived in Milwaukee. But, unlike the annual swarm of Lime, Bird and Veo scooters, this version isn’t dockless or electric. In fact, it’s not a vehicle at all. It’s a coffee shop. The drive-thru cafe recently opened a new location at 6023 W. Forest Home Ave. It’s the first Milwaukee shop for the Omaha-based chain, which sells coffee, espresso drinks, smoothies, teas and snacks such as pastries and breakfast sandwiches. The company is especially known for its signature beverage, Caramelicious, as well as its line of energy drinks, known as Scooot! Energy Infusions. Local entrepreneurs Davinder and Navdeesh Toor own and operate the Milwaukee cafe.

Brother’s Backyard Barbeque is Closed

Brother’s Backyard Barbeque has closed after just under 18 months in business. The Silver City barbecue spot shared the news on social media Tuesday. “It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of Brother’s Backyard BBQ,” the post said. “We have been fortunate to serve you delicious meals and create memories over the years. We want to thank each and every one of you for your loyalty and support. Until then, thank you for your understanding and continued patronage.” The concept has been a presence on the South Side since November 2022, when lifelong friends  Christopher Patton  and  Michael Hester   opened the brick-and-mortar location at 3530 W. National Ave.

New Cocktail Lounge Will Celebrate Bay View History

Neat, spirited, straight-up. These words are all cocktail descriptors, but could also apply to Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. An upcoming business, 17th Ward Cocktail Lounge , plans to showcase both. “We’re trying to essentially embrace the history of Bay View,” said Madalynn Park , who will co-own the cocktail lounge, 2160 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. , with her mom, Cary . The mother-daughter team, along with their extended family, are longtime Bay View residents. In fact, Madalynn’s grandparents attended grade school in the neighborhood, she said. Today, most of the family resides on the same block of Kinnickinnic Avenue.

After 54 Years Pizza Man Closes in Milwaukee

After half a century in operation, encompassing two moves and several ownership changes, Pizza Man has served its final slice in Milwaukee. The restaurant’s Riverwest location, 2060 N. Humboldt Ave. , which it has occupied for just under a year, is closed, Pizza Man announced Monday evening. The Wauwatosa restaurant will remain open. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the permanent closure of our restaurant on Humboldt Blvd,” the business wrote in a statement on social media. “We have had the pleasure of serving you for the past year, and we are grateful for your patronage and support.” The post went on to thank Pizza Man’s former employees, who have dedicated “hard work and commitment” to the restaurant, and assured patrons that the transition will be “as caring as possible” for staff.

Wings Co. Opens on Northwest Side

A new fast food restaurant is now open on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side. Located at 5401 N. Lovers Lane Rd .,  Wings Co. sells a variety of fried chicken and chicken wings, plus sandwiches, sides and more for both dine-in and takeout. The menu features both boneless and traditional chicken wings, available in a wide selection of flavors like Thai Chili, Sriracha, Malaysian Curry and more than 15 others. To dip, diners can choose from buffalo, ranch, honey mustard and more, with extra customizations including extra-crispy, light sauce and extra-wet also available.

Court Suspends City’s Private Security Requirements

The city’s plan to tighten requirements for private security personnel is on hold — at least temporarily — pending the outcome of a lawsuit. In March, the Milwaukee Common Council voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance mandating thorough background checks for security guards and personnel. The legislation, led by Alderwoman Andrea Pratt , also required all hired security to be licensed, bonded and insured. The move came after a gas station guard shot and killed a resident in the Garden Homes  neighborhood last summer. Now, a handful of business owners and security personnel are taking action against the ordinance.

Urbal Tea Temporarily Closes Cafe

The back room at Urbal Tea is a garden graveyard. Just a few steps beyond the polished, public-facing cafe, a production space is crammed with buckets of tea blends and bags of dried herbs — chamomile, mint, sage, rosemary. Stainless steel tables hold scales and mixing bowls, while a binder ring of recipes is slung over one of the shelves, its large print clearly legible from across the room. Customers might be most familiar with the cafe, which faces bustling Oklahoma Avenue. But, as owner Nick Nowaczyk says, “our business is really in the back.”

Thai and Japanese Restaurant Opens in Bay View

Room Service , a new Thai and Japanese restaurant, opened its doors to the public in Bay View Thursday evening. If that title evokes thoughts of silver-domed plates and snacking in slippers, adjust your expectations. Room Service is striking from first sight to last bite. The newly constructed building, 2159 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. , soars with vaulted ceilings and basks in warm lighting. A vast, detailed mural stretches across the north wall, while two contemporary bars — one for sushi, another for alcohol — frame a dining room filled with clusters of dark wood tables and velvety, wraparound chairs. But the restaurant’s look is only half its appeal. The expansive menu at Room Service encompasses a wide range of Japanese and Thai dishes, from noodles and dumplings to sashimi and bao.

Luke Combs crushes 2024 stadium concert tour kickoff at Milwaukee's American Family Field

beer tours in milwaukee

Luke Combs took to the stage in Milwaukee Friday like a bear roaring out of hibernation.

"First show back in five months — here we go," the country superstar cheered after the third song for the kickoff of his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old Tour" at American Family Field. The tour's second show, for the only the second time in the city's stadium concert history, includes another night at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark Saturday.

Combs clearly relished being back in tour mode, roaming all over the stage and runways, crooning and belting until his face turned heirloom-tomato red for show starters "Must've Never Met You," "She Got the Best of Me" and "Lovin' On You" — the latter two among 13 No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay chart-toppers that made Friday's 27-song setlist.

But I'd wager there were a whole lot of Combs fans in Milwaukee Friday who were more excited for this show than he was.

The full-volume singalongs were Exhibit A in that argument, but some historical context is important.

Milwaukee is spoiled by the sheer volume of country A-listers who routinely come to town (Dan + Shay were here last week, and Tim McGraw is going to be here next week). Combs, too, came through early in his career for three shows at the Rave and the late Northern Lights Theater; he also opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made a Farm Aid appearance at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

But that's it. As his trophy case filled up, as the hits kept coming, as he moved on up to stadium headliner status, Combs — very much still at the top of the A-list with a leading eight ACM Award nominations announced this week — had yet to do a major Milwaukee headlining show.

Until this weekend, when he rewarded Milwaukee fans' patience with an impassioned, hits-loaded show and a couple of custom nods to the city — from the blue Brewers ballcap that served as the signature piece of his humble concert ensemble to the lyrical swaps of "Milwaukee" into a handful of songs. That didn't quite work as a sub for Panama as he sang about deep sea fishing for "When It Rains It Pours" Friday — but the cheering crowd made it clear the gesture was appreciated.

And the Milwaukee fans adored the beer-centric portion of Friday's program. Fans got to vote for one of three songs via text to make the setlist Friday, and "Beer Can" beat out "Don't Tempt Me" and "Memories Are Made Of." He paid his respects to hometown favorite Miller Brewing — possibly displeasing any American Family Insurance execs in the crowd when he suggested he still thought of the Milwaukee Brewers stadium as Miller Park — and shotgunned a can of Miller Lite during "1, 2 Many."

And of all the big hits Combs played Friday night, "Beer Never Broke My Heart" had one of the most heartfelt singalongs.

That, and his cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." The biggest hit of his career, Combs' take is pretty straightforward, letting Chapman's beautiful lyrics and melodies lead the way. But there's still clearly something special about his version, isn't there?

It's the same thing, Friday's show indicated, that has made Combs' such a superstar.

As a songwriter, as a storyteller, he's as polished as any of his peers in heavy rotation on country radio. But there's more soul and vulnerability in his voice, with just a touch of grit, than most of his centrist country star contemporaries.

So Combs, a back-to-back CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year recipient, was as expected a likable, stadium-electrifying party host.

But his ability to make the stadium filled with 41,000 to 44,000 feel small, to make songs feel personal in that space, that was his greatest strength Friday — whether he was crooning "This One's for You" alone on electric guitar while his seven-piece band took a breather, or tenderly belting "Better Together" accompanied by pretty melodies on a piano.

But the most intimate and moving stretch of the night included "Love You Anyway," "Forever After All" and "Beautiful Crazy," which Combs said were inspired by his wife Nicole Hocking, who was in attendance Friday. Combs prefaced the song singing her praises, including how she helped him with his daily anxieties — and expressed remorse for missing the birth of their second son last year while he was on tour in Australia. Calling it the best and worst day of his life, Combs choked up, took a beat, and wiped tears from his eyes. And then he poured all the emotion, all the gratitude that he felt in that highly vulnerable moment into those songs.

As the show hit the hour-and-50-minute mark Friday, and Combs more than earned the right to head backstage for some family time, he struggled to peel himself away from the stage.

Nine minutes after Combs sang the final lyrics of the night's final song, "The Kind of Love We Make," the seats across the stadium were largely empty. But the pit was still full of fans, and Combs was still on that stage, signing autograph after autograph after autograph.

Cody Jinks, Charles Wesley Godwin and the Wilder Blue opened Friday night's Luke Combs concert

Cody Jinks was a standout at the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival in Veterans Park last summer , fueled by a hellbent desire to win over the crowd as the event’s lone country act. As the primary opener Friday at a big ol' country show, that kind of pressure was off. And, consequently, Jinks’ fire didn’t burn as brightly, despite solid renditions of tunes like “Fast Hand” and “Mamma Song” aided by a honky-tonk-tuned band.

Immediately winning points with a customized Brew Crew jersey, singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin turned out to be the most animated of Friday's openers, storming the catwalk and banging his head for “Hardwood Floors.” But even in “stadium mode,” Godwin brought intimacy and tenderness to tearjerkers like “Miner Imperfections,” which he dedicated to his father. Godwin may not be at the level of his good friend Zach Bryan yet ( who he opened for at Summerfest last year ), with stadiums full of people mesmerized by every word, but Friday’s set suggested it could be in the cards. Next up for Godwin in Milwaukee: a headlining set at Summerfest’s Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard June 28, which could prove to be too small a stage for his fanbase.

Alt-country act the Wilder Blue started off the night with a gentle but effective rendition of the national anthem, then kept things mellow for Eagles cover “Seven Bridges Road” and “I’m Your Man,” a new single out Friday that, played live, was more blue-cool than red-hot swagger. The polite but understandably sleepy crowd would have to wait for something, well, wilder.

More: How Milwaukee became a must-play market for country music

6 takeaways from Luke Combs' Milwaukee concert Friday

  • At the risk of ruining this for everyone catching a concert at American Family Field in the future (including myself): I once again followed Journal Sentinel reporter Claire Reid's traffic-avoiding tips and drove into the stadium lots from Blue Mound Road. I first hit the brakes at 5:28 p.m., and I was parked by 5:41 p.m. The Journal Sentinel splurged on premium parking this time out, so that cut down on my parking time, but I still was shocked at how quickly I got in. But getting out, there's really nothing drivers can do to avoid that headache. People started filing out in large numbers around 10:50 p.m., but the drive out of the lots around me didn't really clear up until about 12:10 a.m.
  • A friend texted me a photo from his seats at Friday's show — with a massive, suspended speaker stack blocking a good portion of the stage, even though his tickets weren't classified as "obstructed view." He debated with customer service to no avail and embraced a positive attitude, and I gathered he was still able to see Combs on the screens clearly and when he'd walk the stage. But given the complications getting to the show and the cost, it's too bad my friend and others seated near him had to deal with that.
  • Beyond "Fast Car," there were other covers Friday, including a stirring take of Ed Sheeran's "Dive," a rendition of Brooks & Dunn's "Brand New Man," and a medley of three songs with a few of Combs' bandmates taking lead vocals: Shania Twain's "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?," Train's "Drops of Jupiter" and Dierks Bentley's "What Was I Thinkin'?"
  • Combs covered a whole lot of hits, but not every one of his Billboard Country Airplay chart-toppers made the setlist. Left out Friday: "Even Though I'm Leaving," "Does to Me" and "Doin' This." But it was worth cutting one of those to make sure he added unreleased fatherly love song "The Man He Sees in Me" Friday.
  • A head's up: Combs’ openers Friday won’t be the same openers Saturday. Expect a more country radio vibe with (in order of appearance) Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis. And if you get to the lots by 3 p.m., you can see two more acts — Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham — at the Third Base Plaza at American Family Field.
  • Most interesting conversation from the pit: A woman near the stage yelled at a security guard, “Next time I have to pee you’re coming with. That was (expletive) brutal coming back in here.” Understandably, the security guard looked horrified.

beer tours in milwaukee

Luke Combs and Miller Lite have announced a concert tour collaboration together, renewing Combs' partnership for another North American tour with the beer by his side.

The two have collaborated on a concert sweepstakes, custom merch and a new Combs themed beer can.

Combs posted a picture from the "fine pilsner" brewery in Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday wearing a safety vest and hard hat in front of a wall of beer cans.

The caption said, "Really appreciate the folks at  @millerlite  showing me around their brewery and letting me get an up close look at how my beer cans are made from start to finish."

Here's everything we know so far about the 2024 collab.

What is the Luke Combs and Miller Lite concert sweepstakes?

Luke Combs is hitting the road for his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" 2024 tour in North America. He kicked off the tour on April 13 in Milwaukee, WI, where he toured the Miller Lite brewery.

The tour will continue with two stadium dates in 13 cities. The tour includes guests Cody Jinks, The Avett Brothers, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters, The Wilder Blue, Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Drew Parker and Colby Acuff.

The sweepstakes began on March 3 and will end on Sept. 30.

What do the new Luke Combs Miller Lite beer cans look like?

Combs' Instagram post shows his custom 16-oz Miller Lite can, which features a guitar headstock with American traditional tattoo-like text that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart," a nod to Comb's 2019 song.

The front of the can includes Combs' name under the traditional logo.

Miller Lite on Instagram: "Luke Combs is back on tour. To celebrate, we're dropping the new Miller Lite x Luke Combs Tour Trucker hat on 4/17, restocking daily until 4/20. Get yours while they last."

When did Luke Combs begin his partnership with Miller Lite?

In 2022, Combs partnered with Miller Lite, releasing his first limited edition custom can with the brand.

"Last year’s limited-edition Luke Combs cans did really well for us," Jamie Rubinstein, associate marketing manager for Miller Lite, told Beer & Beyond .

"Plus, we got great feedback that they worked well with our Americana displays, so we’re looking forward to seeing how this year’s cans come to life at retail this summer."

When will we see the 2024 Luke Combs Miller Lite cans in stores?

It is unclear when the new cans will be available for purchase in stores.

Fans speculate the cans will be available at Combs' upcoming arena tour stops.

What other Luke Combs and Miller Lite merch is there?

Combs and Molson Coors have collaborated to release the Miller Lite x Luke Combs Tour Trucker, a special edition hat. The hat features Combs' signature vintage style and is also a potential ticket to one of his shows.

Starting on April 17, Miller Lite began selling a limited number of the hats at their merch store online. On April 18, 19 and 20 a limited number of hats will be sold at 8 a.m. CST.

Each hat purchased is also an automatic entry in a sweepstakes contest, entering fans in a contest to see Combs at a summer show of their choosing.

“He’s the most genuine brand fan we could have asked for, and we’re excited to share his love for Miller Lite with consumers this summer,” Rubenstein said to Beer & Beyond.

“If you’re a fan of Luke Combs, you’re probably a fan of Miller Lite. It’s a match made in heaven.”
