Exclusive: Inside Guy Sebastian’s family home

Profile picture of Chris Pearson

If the world’s a stage for singer and songwriter Guy Sebastian, his home on Sydney’s eastern beaches, which he shares with wife Jules and their two children, is no exception. His talents can be on instant display to the steady flow of friends and family who regularly cross its threshold.

Arranged in a U-shape, the home’s his ‘amphitheatre’, his grand piano having pride of place in the central foyer, a raised space within a soaring nine-metre void. When he’s alone, Guy tinkles away, but, when friends drop in, he and Jules throw open the doors along each side of that U and everyone can listen to him perform. If he wants to make a showbiz entrance – not really his style – the helical staircase forged in steel and encased in crisp white render, which descends the void, provides the perfect vehicle.

SP01 ‘Holland’ bench by Metrica from Space. Walls in hand-trowelled custom concrete panels. Flooring in black aggregate concrete with light grind. Stairs in blackbutt and moulded steel with rendered finish.

This is a home that’s full of grand gestures and an element of theatre – it’s a fascinating fusion of both the public and private person, never losing sight of the fact that it’s also a family home for the couple and sons Hudson, seven, and Archer, five. Its moods shift with the time of day and the many purposes to which it is being put.

After a long search, the couple chanced upon this property about six years ago, seduced by its generous 1400 square metres, rare in this suburb, and its proximity to the beach. “We fell in love with the large block. My dream was to have a big backyard and tennis court,” says Guy. The only drawback was that the site was hogged by a 70-year-old bungalow showing its age.

Custom pendant light in solid brass. Active Plus pull-out nozzle tap from Franke. Zip HydroTap in matt black. Caesarstone ‘Rugged Concrete’ engineered stone bench top.

Drawing on the talents of Joe Snell of Studio Snell – a former judge on a home renovation show, he and Guy met through sharing an agent – they bulldozed the old-timer and created a modern four-bedroom, three-level home. Design-savvy Guy and Jules presented Joe with a bursting scrapbook of images from Pinterest and other websites as inspiration for their forever home. He in turn spent time with the family to suss out their day-to-day needs. “We wanted our home to suit family living, with the children having their own spaces, and also be able to entertain,” says Jules. “I have five principles – space, light, air, view and sound – get those right and it just flows,” says Joe. And flow it does, and not just thanks to him. “Guy and Jules had a distinct style – they loved concrete, steel, glass, and black and white. I had to get them to back themselves and have the confidence to build the house that reflected them. That way they really own it.”

“Joe opened up our world,” adds Guy. “I love it when someone comes in with fresh eyes and unlocks a home’s potential.” With few openings on the facade, the house presents like a bunker to the street (“Yes, it’s fortress-like, but my job is fairly public, so I need some privacy,” says Guy). But walk in the front door and it reveals itself miraculously, with soaring voids and spans soaking up expansive ocean views and, of course, that amphitheatre lies directly before you. “The piano is the first thing you see. It’s a natural stage, especially when the doors are open,” says Joe. Lofty walls of horizontal ribbed concrete soften the void’s verticality, while the spiral stairs complement the curves of the grand piano.

In the media room, Glas Italia ‘LA Sunset’ coffee table, Edra ‘Absolu’ sofa and Moooi ‘Calligraphy Bird’ rug, all from Space.

“The foyer and stairs are works of art. I can be sitting at the piano and appreciate all the detail in the concrete,” says Guy. “And that stair was not cheap, but Joe said, ‘think Guggenheim’.” The bravura performance continues down a few steps into the kitchen and family area. Under the six-metre ceiling – with exposed ducts in true warehouse style – sits a massive six-metre-long bench. Adding to the sense of openness, the Freedom Kitchens joinery reads as furniture rather than being built-in. The black ceiling contrasts with crisp white walls that extend into an ‘air chimney’, a lantern roof that keeps the open-plan cool, generating cross-breezes and minimising the need for air-conditioning. “This is my dream kitchen not just because I love cooking – but also because it is so communal,” says Guy.

In the living room, Brosa ‘Studio’ club chairs covered in sheepskin. Timothy Oulton ‘Nirvana’ sofa from Coco Republic. SP01 ‘Mohana’ coffee table from Space and ‘Amara Ellipse’ coffee table from GlobeWest. Rug from Coppola Home.

In the opposing wing are the children’s media room and a guest room. Above this, up the spiral stairs, sits the main bedroom with an ensuite and generous walk-in, and Guy’s bells-and-whistles recording studio, while the other wing accommodates the two children’s bedrooms. Perched on the top level is the ‘cigar room’, an intimate club-like space with traditional wainscoting walls, a dramatic contrast to the clean finishes downstairs. The decoration of their home weds their slightly divergent tastes. “I like little pops of extravagance in colour and texture whereas Jules is minimalist and monochromatic, and likes a continuity of grey, black and white,” says Guy. “I think we have found a balance of the two.”

guy sebastian house tour

In the ‘cigar room’ on the top level, ‘Ally’ chair from Sofa & Soul. Sancal ‘Rew’ sofa from Ke-Zu. ‘Shiitake’ coffee table from Maker. Cafe Lighting & Living ‘Brooklyn’ drinks trolley from Interiors Online. Reflections Copenhagen ‘Diamond’ mirror from Jardan. De Marque Collection pre-finished oak flooring from Floormania. Joinery in Polytec ‘Ultramatt’ with Caesarstone top in Jet Black by Blank Joinery. Escea fireplace surrounded by Onyx marble wall panel from WK Stone. Wainscoting in Dulux ‘Reserved’.

They chose all their own furniture. Guy looks admiringly at the coffee table he selected in the living area, while Jules picked the smart dining room table, but she self-effacingly plays down their role in the accomplished whole. “Get the architecture and the design right – and Joe has taken care of that – and all it really needs is a coffee table book or a vase to finish it off.”

Both say they keep pinching themselves. “We didn’t grow up in houses like this,” says Guy. “Every day, we look at each other and say, ‘Why is this us?’ But there is beauty in feeling like an alien in your own space. You never fail to appreciate it.”

In the main ensuite, Kaldewei ‘Puro’ inset bath and Sussex ‘Circa’ basin tapware in Living Tumbled Brass, all from Reece. ‘Flynn’ mirrors from RJ Living. Artwork ‘Basic 01’ matt tiles in Glossy Green from Di Lorenzo. Carpet from Signature Floors.

“Emotion comes into it,” adds Jules. “It’s somewhere that you can raise children, invite friends and family. This is our home, beautiful and perfect. I love watching the flow of it and seeing where people land.” All that opens and shuts is automated, which the couple are still adapting to. “I thought it would be overwhelming, but it’s easy to set up. I get nerdy. Everything’s voice-activated,” says The Voice judge Guy with just a little irony. snellarchitects.com.au

After graduating as a journalist, I specialised in business press until I landed a position at a Sydney interior design and architecture magazine. I went on to take up senior editor roles on various publications in the homes area before opting to freelance as a writer, editor and content producer for magazines – including Belle, House & Garden, Inside Out, Home Beautiful and The Block – newspapers and websites, focusing on homes, design, gardens, food and travel. I have also written, edited and contributed to books specialising in these lifestyle areas. I really enjoy what I do – it combines my love of words with my passion for smart design and the built environment.

A peek inside Guy and Jules Sebastian’s ultra-modern Sydney home

Profile picture of Nicola Conville

Guy and Jules Sebastian have recently moved back into their modern Maroubra home after a long period of rebuilding and renovating.

Sharing images of their home on Instagram, Jules revealed that she was delighted with the finished result.

“Every last detail was important to us when we designed our home. We wanted the inside to be just as beautiful as the outside,” she said.

“[Guy] and I love to entertain, so creating an inviting outdoor area was essential in helping our guests feel relaxed and welcome.”

Jules also shared an image of their gorgeous bathroom, which boasts his and hers sinks, a terrazzo tile and black joinery, sinks and brass hardware.

The U-shaped home also features a tennis court, pool, open garage and views of the ocean.

Guy has also shared glimpses of the home’s interior, including a beautifully designed spiral staircase created by architect @joesnelldesign .

Guy, Jules and their two children moved into the home in June 2019 after the lengthy renovation process.

“It’s a long build, but it’s a pretty special house,” Guy confessed in a radio interview late last year. “It’s not normal. It’s not a cookie-cutter house, it’s cool.”

See inside Guy Sebastian’s controversial mansion

Profile picture of Nadia Elshawarby

Guy Sebastian has finally given fans a glimpse inside his $3.1 million mansion, which is situated in Sydney’s beachside suburb, Maroubra.

The Australian singer invited his The Voice team for a mentoring session in his kitchen on Tuesday night’s episode.

WATCH: Take a look inside Guy’s AMAZING home:

The 37-year-old’s contestants -Mitch Paulson, Jack Vidgen, Elsa Clement and Chynna Taylor – gathered inside his large, sleek, industrial-style open-plan kitchen.

The plush eating area was surrounded by large, glass doors, which appeared to lead out onto an outdoor seating area.

Guy and wife Jules Sebastian’s property has been surrounded in controversy after neighbours labelled the lengthy renovation process a “demolition nightmare” after their living room wall was damaged during the building process.

It’s a unique design – pretty out there,’ he said. ‘But we’ve chosen all the furniture, I found it all. That side of it has been easy.’

Inside Guy and Jules Sebastian's million-dollar 'fortress', where we wish we were isolating.

Amy Clark

Celebrities are just like us.

Right now, they too are staying home to stop the spread of COVID-19… only they’re doing it in lovely, big houses we wouldn’t mind self-isolating in.

From JLo and Ellen DeGeneres, to John Legend and Chrissie Teigen, lots of our favourite celebrities are sharing virtual lockdown house tours on Instagram for our entertainment. Closer to home, one such couple are the delightful Guy and Jules Sebastian.

Side note – here’s a look at how celebs are isolating in the video below. Post continues after video.

After two-and-a-half years of construction and a small army of disgruntled neighbours, the couple finally finished their $3.1 million-dollar home that’s best described as a U-shaped concrete fortress (more on that in a bit). Ever since, they’ve been sharing photos of their modern four-bedroom, three-level home in Sydney’s eastern suburb of Maroubra on social media.

From a bathroom that belongs on The Block (it was designed by a former House Rules judge) to an outdoor entertaining area big enough to host the ARIAs, here’s a look inside Guy and Jules Sebastian’s mansion.

How Matt Moran Really Feels About Fast Food

The staircase that looks like a piece of art..

First off, let’s talk about Guy and Jules’ staircase. Because, it’s… not a staircase. It’s art.

The helical staircase designed by architect and former House Rules judge Joe Snell is made out of steel with a white render finish, and is one of the first things you’d see were you ever to walk through the Sebastians’ front door.

Speaking to Bella Magazine , Guy said: “The foyer and stairs are works of art… And that stair was not cheap, but Joe said, ‘think Guggenheim’.”

Yes. Guggenheim.

The piano room where Guy writes his music.

Next, we must discuss Guy’s piano amphitheatre.

Placed in his foyer on polished concrete just next to the Guggenheim stairs is the singer’s grand piano. The piano itself sits in a raised space with a nine-metre void above for excellent acoustics.

The space also has a set up with a textured backdrop and plush navy chairs where Jules films her interview series Tea with Jules . So basically, in real-world terms, it’s their home office.

Of course, this is Guy’s favourite place in his ginormous mansion where he sits and writes most of his music. He’s also been doing some live concerts on his Instagram account to entertain us all in isolation.

The living, kitchen and dining rooms that are ‘in’ the backyard.

Onto the living room that completely opens up into the backyard. Yep, one minute you’re on the couch watching a movie, and the next, you’re sitting on the side of a tennis court.

A benefit of the couple’s U-shape designed home is how all the walls from the kitchen, dining room and living room open up to create the most hectic, amazing open-plan outdoor entertaining area you’ve ever seen.

It’s so big, Guy could practically host the ARIAs there. (Once social distancing is over, of course.) Side note – there’s also a couch and TV in the kitchen because duh, why wouldn’t you want to watch TV in the kitchen…

The common themes throughout all of the living spaces are concrete and wood finishes, and furniture and fixtures in black, white and grey. It’s very edgy.

The bathroom that looks like it belongs in a funky hotel.

One of the funkiest – and most Instagrammable – parts of Guy and Jules’ house is their bathroom. I mean, look at the floor tiles!?!?

Equally as monochrome chic as the rest of their house, the bathroom tiles are an intricate black and white pattern and run across the floor and up the walls, too.

Then, of course, there are the ‘his and hers’ sinks with brushed gold fixtures. And a sunken bath. We caught another glimpse of the bathroom when Jules recently posted an at-home hair tutorial vid on Instagram.

The steam room.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by guysebastian (@guysebastian) on Jan 20, 2020 at 12:46am PST

GUYS. THEY HAVE A STEAM ROOM.

Looking at the photos from Guy’s Instagram post, their own private steam room has millennial pink tiles that cover the walls and the bench where you relax and soak up the steam.

Oh, and there’s Aesop in there, too. Wonder if they take bookings for spa sessions…

The ‘fortress’ front yard with no windows.

Probably the most controversial aspect of the Sebastians’ Maroubra mansion is the front of it.

Why? Because it’s an actual fortress. From the street, you can’t see into the property at all. There’s a single, blacked-out window on the house’s front exterior.

Following comments about the house’s frontage made to the media by disgruntled neighbours, Guy told Belle Magazine that, “Yes, it’s fortress-like, but my job is fairly public, so I need some privacy.”

“The house is all about privacy from the front but an enormous amount of natural light from the back.”

The backyard of our dreams.

Last but 100 per cent not least is Guy and Jules’ backyard.

Along with the aforementioned kitchen and living areas with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that open up completely, their backyard has a tennis court, in-built swimming pool, sun lounges, a barbecue area, fire pit and even some sort of shed/granny flat.

On Instagram, Jules wrote: “Growing up we didn’t have a pool at home, I was always scheming my way into play dates with friends who did!”

Guy added, “We didn’t grow up in houses like this. Every day, we look at each other and say, ‘Why is this us?’ But there is beauty in feeling like an alien in your own space. You never fail to appreciate it.”

I felt this wa sa bit over the top at the time, but I have to say that the edited headline makes it seem like the Sebastians have been posting these pics during this time of self isolation, which would have been hugely insensitive, I think - but they haven't. This really should be articulated clearly in the article (and whenever they update an existing article, really)

Well that’s hideous.

Imagine saying ‘think guggenheim’ and what you mean is a concrete staircase, not a single artwork.

Neighbours had long complained about the development, with many describing it as a 'fortress' because of its monolithic facade and others even threatening to move away from the area.

In December, Guy defended the renovation, telling KIIS FM: 'It's a long build, but it's a pretty special house. It's not normal. It's not a cookie-cutter house. It's cool.'

Presented By KIIS 1065

XX Double Decade Celebration – 2023’s only live show. Sunday 10th December 2023 SOLD OUT Monday 11th December 2023 NEW SHOW Sydney Opera House Forecourt

For complete tour and ticket and information go to www.livenation.com.au

Guy Sebastian returns to the Sydney Opera House Forecourt on Sunday 10th December 2023 for his only live show of the year celebrating with his loyal fans 20 years since he was crowned Australia’s very first Australian Idol. It was in this very same venue, on 19th November, 2003 where Australia crowned him the winner.

General public tickets go on sale on Monday, September 25 at 10am.

A Live Nation pre-sale commences on Friday, September 22 at 10am, running until Monday, September 25 at 9am. (All times are local).

This bespoke concert under the stars will see Guy delve into his vast array of hits and fan favourites from across his stunning 20-year career. Fans from all generations will enjoy some nostalgic one-off reprises of songs that Guy performed during his Idol journey right up to his smash debut single ‘Angels Brought Me Here.’ Songs like, ‘Who’s that Girl’, the iconic global smash ‘Battlescars’, ‘Before I Go’, ARIA Song of the Year – ‘Choir ‘… to his stellar new single, ‘I Chose Good’ and a preview of new upcoming tracks, this will be a once in a lifetime experience Guy’s fans won’t want to miss.

The singer, songwriter, music producer & Voice coach is acutely aware of the multi-generations of fans who have supported him across the years – from young fans experiencing their very first concert last year at his T. R. U. T. H. sell out national tour, to fans who have literally grown up with him across the years now with families & kids of their own.

“I wasn’t going to tour until more new music was out,” Guy expresses. “I have really had so much to be thankful for though, so it would be a shame to not celebrate this moment with a lot of the fans who gave me this opportunity all those years ago. Twenty years ago when I was standing on the very same steps at the Opera House, I couldn’t of imagined that I would be back here still doing what I love, so come celebrate with me!”

Guy Sebastian is one of Australia’s most successful singer/songwriter/producers and multi-season coach on The Voice. First appearing on television screens in 2003, Australia fell in love with the young man from Adelaide that wowed the judges on the very first season of Australian Idol. Since then Australia has taken Guy into their hearts as they have witnessed his music career go from strength to strength. From his very first single Angels Brought Me Here – the highest-selling single in 2003 and still holds the record for fastest-selling single in ARIA chart history – through to chart toppers, including Like It Like That, Who’s That Girl, Battle Scars, Choir and many more, Guy Sebastian has dominated music platforms with his infectious pop songs and earnest ballads, and established himself as one of the most successful and enduring Australian artists of the last 20 years.

Guy Sebastian is the only Australian male to boast six #1 singles in ARIA chart history and sold well over 7 million combined units worldwide, has over 1 billion streams world-wide while attaining 82 Platinum certifications across his career. He has been nominated and won numerous awards including ARIAs, APRAs, Australian MTV Awards and many more. Sebastian is also a member of an elite group of Australian artists who have achieved Platinum sales in the U.S. courtesy of ‘Battle Scars’ (2012), his global hit with Lupe Fiasco.

Guys career trajectory continues to climb as each year passes. His new single I CHOOSE GOOD is out now – with more exciting music announces to come!

Heart Your Home

Take a look inside Guy Sebastian’s holiday home

By Jen Bishop •

Today we take a look inside singer Guy Sebastian’s holiday home on the NSW South Coast. I interviewed his wife, Jules, about creating a family hideaway as well as somewhere perfect for entertaining.

guy sebastian 3

The couple had been looking for a holiday home when Guy fell in love with the headland in Gerroa and was determined to find something to buy in the area. “This house came up for sale a couple of months later and we grabbed it while we could,” said Jules, a fashion stylist. “In terms of location it was exactly what we were looking for, but we wanted to renovate to make it into the dream home.”

The renovation meant gutting half of the top floor and starting again. Guy got stuck in himself, as walls were knocked out to really open up the view of the ocean, before all the bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens were renovated. “It was a lot of work,” says Jules, who recently announced she is pregnant with the couple’s second child. “Guy was like Bob the Builder!

Jules Sebastian

“He was knocking the walls out and jackhammering the floors, painting and getting into everything. He loved being the project manager and making his vision come to life.”

guy sebastian 8

They were inspired by Gerroa’s beachy, laidback vibe when it came to decorating. “We went for a mild beach theme but not too much, whereas our house in Sydney has more of a vintage modern feel.”

guy sebastian 2

Guy and Jules chose the furniture together. “Because he was so involved in the design he had a real vision for what he wanted. We just wanted a house where people could come and relax and use all the facilities and have a really great break. We love entertaining and having a house full of people so we went for a big comfy couch and a huge 12-seater kitchen table to make sure we had somewhere for everyone to sit!”

guy sebastian 7

They used Emma Blomfield from Nest Designs to look after the finishing touches. “It’s amazing what a professional stylist can do to bring a house to life,” says Jules. “Emma came in and put the finishing touches on the whole house. I’ve never seen so many cushions and candles in my whole life! Just how she put the colours together with the prints and how she displayed photos and other trinkets around the house were all things I would never have thought of.” She adds: “It is always great to have another point of view and an interior stylist has so many creative ideas and resourses to help make your place look great. You don’t necessarily have to have a huge budget either. I do enjoy interiors and I am getting the hang of it more and more.”

guy sebastian 6

With a fast-growing toddler and now a baby on the way, child-friendliness was always a big consideration. “While we were doing the house, Hudson was just starting to really get around so we made most things child-friendly. It’s never possible to have everything completely safe for babies but we did our best. There is a lot of open space around the top section of the house and baby gates on the stairs so he can roam around quite well without hurting himself.”

guy sebastian 5

With the couple’s busy schedules, they like to get to Gerroa as often as possible to unwind and spend time together as a family, even if it’s just for a day or two. “Guy loves to surf so he tries to get out as much as he can. Whenever I go down there I always feel like I am on a holiday so I love it! Nothing like a bit of ocean air to refresh your day!”

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.

Hollywood Jews Slam Violence Outside L.A. Synagogue as ‘Horrifying,’ Vow to ‘Mobilize’

Members of Hollywood’s Jewish community are on edge and vowing to mobilize in the wake of a pro-Palestinian protest outside of a Pico Boulevard synagogue over the weekend that turned violent.

The protest, which blocked the entrance of Adas Torah synagogue in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood on Sunday morning, resulted in a chaotic free-for-all, with at least one person hospitalized. The incident has sparked an uproar among some industryites, who feel the protestors crossed a red line when they converged outside of a house of worship.

Car buyers want more screens as in-vehicle entertainment rises, 'my old ass' trailer: aubrey plaza gives advice to her younger self -- on shrooms -- in breakout sundance comedy, popular on variety.

Video from the scene showed a mob beatdown of Naftoli Sherman, a Jewish man who operates a mobile barbershop in the area, said to be the most densely populated Jewish neighborhood on the West Coast and home to kosher restaurants and grocery stores as well multiple synagogues. Sherman tells  Variety  he was hospitalized after his nose was broken in two places.

Hussam Ayloush, director of the Los Angeles office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, defended the protest, which was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement. “The demonstration in front of the Adas Torah synagogue over the weekend was in response to the blatant violations of both international law and human rights from [real estate] agencies that seek to make a profit selling brutally stolen Palestinian land as the Israeli government continues its eight-month-long genocidal campaign and ethnic cleansing in Gaza,” he said.

Industry sources say the Anti-Defamation League will host a briefing with the LAPD for concerned members of entertainment community later this week. But many have little confidence that they can rely on the LAPD for protection.

“There’s a lot of talk over the past 12-15 hours about self-arming and doing our own neighborhood watch groups and having our own self-funded groups,” says one well-connected industry figure. “This industry has now been mobilized because we are so unified and we’re such a powerful voting block.”

Also this weekend, pro-Palestinian protestors marched with megaphones in front of CNN anchor Jake Tapper ’s home in a Washington suburb, prompting many of his fellow journalists to criticize the group and accuse them of harassing Tapper’s children.

Moataz Salim, who was one of the protestors, defended the group’s actions on Friday as peaceful and explained why they believe Tapper is fair game.

“Jake Tapper was chosen because he accused the whole student movement for Palestine as being antisemitic,” Salim says. “His rhetoric has very much been justifying the war crimes that Israel is committing, blaming it all on the Palestinian resistance, repeating the human shields argument, which for us is dehumanizing of Palestinians, and is essentially manufacturing consent for those war crimes and atrocities. So that’s why we targeted him. We also know he’s the highest-profile, name recognition person within CNN.”

But if the police response to the Pico Boulevard protest that quickly escalated into violence was deemed insufficient, the opposite appears to be true in Tapper’s case. Salim tells  Variety  that multiple law enforcement agencies were on hand including, inexplicably, two Secret Service details.

“We were very surprised to see that,” adds Salim. “Who specifically ordered or designated Tapper as someone who gets Secret Service protection?”

CNN and Tapper declined to comment for this story.

Back in Los Angeles, several people across the creative spectrum say they are rattled by the events that took place at a synagogue located a short distance from the Sony and Fox Studios lots as well as agencies like CAA. Director Jonathan Jakubowicz says he moved to Los Angeles from his native Venezuela to escape antisemitism and finds himself once again feeling unsafe.

Likewise, WME agent Robert Newman called the incident “unspeakably horrifying and frightening” and adds, “This is like Charlottesville every day. And from their actions, it’s clear that these violent anti-Israel mobs feel even more emboldened and justified to threaten and attack Jews anytime and anywhere, at schools, restaurants, subways, hospitals, Holocaust museums, synagogues, in their neighborhoods and homes.”

Writer William Schmidt, who is currently a consulting producer on “Tulsa King,” thinks that Hollywood’s Jewish community has been too passive in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, which exposed a major rift in Hollywood, with anti-Israel sentiment gaining traction in an industry that had once been unified in support of the Jewish state. He says that timidity continues in the wake of the synagogue incident.

“I am discouraged and disgraced by the silence to these events by Jewish entertainment professionals — powerful and wealthy showrunners for instance,” Schmidt says. “We are a powerful, wealthy group — and we have done nothing — getting the guilds to  allow  us to have Jewish affinity groups. Big deal.”

As temperatures rise in the summer months, so too are tensions. And few expect things to normalize anytime soon. On one private WhatsApp chain popular with Hollywood Jews, participants were sharing an Instagram story from UCLA’s Cultural Affairs Commission, a student organization at the university that traditionally has been a feeder school to the industry. The story, a repost of a message written by Vishal P. Singh, a videographer who works on Netflix documentaries, illustrates the stark difference in perspectives on the Israel-Gaza conflict.

“Think about what happened today in Los Angeles. A real estate event to sell stolen Palestinian land cannot be protested or fascists will try to kill you,” Singh wrote. “LAPD threatening to execute pro-Palestine protestors at gun point. Zionists getting away with terrorist violence with impunity. We are in a cold civil war that is heating up rapidly. Prepare accordingly. Take a stop the bleed class. Learn how to use weapons safely. Save up for bullet proof armor. The genocide is not far away. It’s here. The heart of the empire is here. It’s our duty to fight and stop it by any means necessary.”

UCLA did not respond to a request for comment. Singh tells Variety , “Political tensions are rising in the United States and violence by police and private citizens against social justice activists has become normalized.”
