Panama Roll-Up Hats - "Foldable" Certainly the panama hat has an unmatched history for its durability and roll-ability to fit into a small wooden box or a bamboo tube for storage or shipping. That is one of the reasons the Panama hat is so famous! The benefits of rolling up a hat (or Folding) are obvious when you are sitting on an airplane looking for a place to set your hat! So their are some who truly benefit buy this style and so I make it available to you! But before you make that decision please take into consideration what it is you are asking for and if you still would like a roll up hat, I will be happy to make it for you!  All True Montecristi Panama hats are roll-able, foldable and will bounce back into shape when unrolled that is because of the Unique "Paja" that the hat is made of.

The differences: 1 - in the Roll up (foldable) is that the Leather sweat band will be much thinner! or made of fabric The reason for this is simply because if you try to roll up a hat with the standard leather band, although the band is of highest Quality, it would restrict the effectiveness of its ability to roll up due to the thickness of the leather! so part of the reason we do not recommend it is, a thin a leather sweat band it will be susceptible to sweat stains easier than the standard thicker band, and sweat stains that can be very difficult to clean out! So although some thew the history of panama hats, have a need for just such a hat, like heavy travelers, the average person will do much better with the standard hat that has the standard leather sweat band. 2 -We use a linner inside our hats that is removable if you dont like it. but will not be included in the rollup models beacuse it restricts rolling and beacuse the swatband mentioned in point 1 is not stiff enough to hold the linner material behind it. 3- we use pich protectors on stadard models (excluding the Optimo) to make your hat last a lifetime of pinching the top it will not break teh straw even though you would never know it was their! In addition to that whenever you roll up a such a fine product as this it is not without any sign of having been rolled once you unroll it, it will take a little steam to put things back in order mostly the brim in the case of an optimo model and the crown as well in other models. So if you order a roll able hat from use we will use less stiffener or no stiffener at all in some cases to keep the hat as flexible as possible but that on the other hand makes reshaping it a little more difficulty since it will have a harder time holding its shape if it has no stiffener in it at all. The historic classic Optimo will hold its original shape the best when it is unrolled. (basicly the first panama hat model it is basicly an unshaped hat ) For this reason it is the standard recommendation, but any of the hats can be rolled up because they are all made in the same way and are all Equally durable! but since the other styles do not have a crease down the middle they do not unroll as well without leaving a slight crease threw the middle of the hat. In no way would this damage the hat since the crease can be worked out without too much trouble it is just that they do not have the same look right away after unrolling. on the other hand the Optimo has this natural crease and so immediately after unrolling it, it does not have as much tall tale signs of having been rolled! The choice is entirely yours but just so you are aware of the difficulties of the roll up style. I find that most people ask about this style only because they have heard about the Famous Roll up panama hats and it is a conversation piece for them and that is fine, but it may not be as practical as you might need from a daily wear hat.   The purpose of rolling a Genuine Panama should be for the convenience of travel only, it should not be permanently stored rolled up, as it would lose the shape and it would need to be reshaped. To keep your hat looking perfect, roll it up as few and loosely as you can.

• Turn down the brim all the way round, pushing up all the crown
• Hold the hat with the crown running from left to right
• Fold carefully along the center ridge of the crown, pushing one side of the hat into the other
• Gently, roll it up loosely into a cone-like shape – you can put a band around to hold it in place or insert it in the  travel tube

Tips for Buying Packable Sun Hats

Look for a high upf rating and adjustable features.

You may be surprised by how little protection some fabrics offer from harmful sun rays. To determine how well your sun hat will keep you safe from burns, look for its UPF (UV protection factor) rating. This number indicates how much UV will go through a piece of clothing or accessory. While it’s recommended to pick a hat with a UPF of at least 30, one that has a 50+ rating offers better protection as it can block about 98 percent of UV radiation.

Adjustable features also help you get the most out of your sun hat. Adjustable hat bands that you can tighten or loosen allow you to get the perfect fit, while brims with snaps or moldable wiring let you customize the look. Adjustable chin straps are convenient if you need to secure your hat or if you want to take it off and hang it from your neck.

Think about your intended activity

A wide-brim sun hat is great for lounging at the beach, but you may want something more secure for more active pursuits like hiking or running . If outdoor adventures are on the agenda, try a hat in a lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric that you can hand wash or toss in the washing machine. If you’re going boating or high winds are in the forecast, go for a hat that has a chin strap to keep it securely fastened.

Factors We Considered When Picking Products

There’s no magic formula for choosing hats in general — if it feels good and looks good, you’re off to a good start. But when you add “travel-friendly” as a requirement, you’ve got to consider specific attributes, including:

When traveling, a hat will either be on your head or mixed in with your other gear. When it’s on your head, it may be there for hours, exposed to sun, wind, and rain. On a serious note, please  do  choose hats that offer good sun protection. The folks at  SkinCancer.org say, “the best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back.”

Packability/Crushability

Once you take off your hat, it’s got to go somewhere… in a coat pocket, perhaps, or flattened and layered into your luggage. If you want it spring back into proper shape, look for products that advertise as ‘crushable’ or ‘packable.’ Wool felt performs well, as do many synthetics. However, straw is brittle and will crack or crumble, and cotton will wrinkle and crease.

Sad story: I took a spiffy fedora with me to Europe last year, but had to hastily jam it into my bag at one point. In Italy, it emerged crushed and never regained its former glory. Since then I’ve only traveled with caps that can take a beating and still look fresh.

You put a lot of effort and expense into planning the perfect trip, so don’t cheap out on that fashion statement sitting above your ears. Invest in one of these quality products that are sure to survive your globetrotting adventures. Go for it.

When you look good, you feel good. Spending a little extra on an accessory like a hat may seem superfluous, but in reality, can you put a price on self-confidence? Yes. Yes, you can. But most of these hats are affordable and can be the perfect accent for any travel outfit. Splurge a little, buddy!

Folding a Panama Hat: 5 Tips

Panama hats are a must-have for tropical vacations. They provide excellent sun protection while giving the wearer a stylish appearance. But considering how pricey a Panama hat is, you may be wary about folding and packing it into your luggage.

Here are 5 tips for folding a Panama hat:

• Check if your Panama hat is foldable.
• Do not roll if your hat is too dry.
• Roll the hat gently.
• Use a travel tube.
• Unfold as soon as possible.

Let’s take a better look at these tips so you can fold your Panama hat properly.

• 1. Check if Your Panama Hat Is Foldable

Not all Panama hats are foldable. There are three things you should check on your particular hat before you fold it, such as the fabric weave, brim size, and the specific style of your Panama hat. Let’s look closer at these factors:

• Check the fabric weave, because hats with fine weaves are more supple and flexible, thus easier to fold. 
• Consider the size of the brim. Panama hats with wide brims, such as the Plantation-style Panama , shouldn’t be folded as they may lose their shape and become floppy after folding.
• Look at the style of the Panama hat. The classic Optimo, Fedora, and Montecristi are the ideal styles for folding.

If it turns out your Panama hat is too stiff or delicate to be folded, don’t worry. There are alternative methods you can use to bring the hat on a journey, which will be discussed later in this article.

• Now your hat should have a shallow bowl-like shape. Follow that shape and gently fold it onto one side.
• Roll the hat into itself, starting from the front edge. Place a finger inside the roll from the crown side to prevent the roll from becoming too tight.
• Secure the roll with a broad elastic band, and you’re done.
• 4. Use a Travel Tube

After rolling your Panama hat, you need to pack it carefully, so it doesn’t get squished while in transport. 

That said, finding the perfect spot can be difficult, especially if your luggage is filled to the brim. That’s why I recommend using a travel tube, like the Borges & Scott Travel Tube from Amazon.com, as it can protect your Panama hat while traveling. 

If you decide to use a travel tube, slide the brim end inside first to keep the roll tidy and secure. Don’t forget to put the tube’s lid back into place to keep your Panama hat safe.

• 5. Unfold As Soon as Possible

Even if you precisely follow the previous tips, your Panama hat can still lose its shape after being folded for too long.

That’s why you should unfold your Panama hat as soon as possible. 

A genuine Panama hat should only be folded for traveling. Then, it should be stored unfolded to preserve its shape.

• What To Do if You Panama Hat Loses Its Shape

Folding your Panama hat too long or too often can cause it to lose its shape. But don’t worry, you can still rescue a misshapen Panama hat.

Use a steam machine on your Panama hat and gently reshape it by hand. If you can’t get your hands on a steam machine, you can also use the steam from a hot shower or a tea kettle to help it settle back into its original shape.

I found the perfect foldable sun hat for traveling — and it’s only $25

The shelf life of most hats I own is short. They usually get squished in my bag while traveling and then retired to the back of my closet afterward. And when I reach for them again on an exceptionally sunny day, they're either unraveling at the seams or bent and beyond repair. So, when I recently read about the Lanzom Wide Brim Roll-Up Sun Hat that actually retains its shape, I was a bit skeptical.

However, since it's an affordable bestseller and looked stylish enough to wear while running errands, yet practical enough to wear while working in the garden, I decided to try it out and see if it held up to its "packable" promises.

Why I like this product

It comes in several colors and styles.

This hat — which has over 26,000 verified five-star ratings — isn't one style fits all. There are more than 20 different looks to choose from! In addition to various bold colors, the bands around the brim come in several shades as well. I opted for the classic beige with a black band since I can wear it with everything from my favorite gray slimming shorts to my more fun pieces, like a versatile tunic that can also be worn as a dress.

The hat itself is 90 percent "high-quality natural paper straw" and 10 percent polyester. It's woven tight enough that I don't think it will unravel easily, but it's also breathable enough that I don't overheat when I wear it in high humidity.

One size fits most

Excuse the cliché, but this hat fits me like a glove. It lacks the dorky chin strap my mom's sun hats have, but it does have a ribbon inside the brim that can be used to adjust the size. I haven't worn my hat while riding in a convertible (yet), but I wear it a lot while working around the yard in 15 mph Montana winds — and it hasn't fallen off once!

One Amazon reviewer says she's worn hers "on a trip that involved a lot of wind, boats and open safari vehicles." It comfortably stayed put. Most of the negative reviews have to do with size, not quality. If you have a larger-than-average-size head, this might not be the hat for you. What sets this hat apart from other sun hats is simple: It holds its shape. Unless you work outside, vacations are when you need a sun hat the most — so it's silly to have one that doesn't pack well.

I can pretty much fold this hat in half, throw it in my luggage and rest assured I'm not doing irreversible damage and rendering it unwearable by the time I arrive at my destination. Plus, with its UPF 50+ rating , this hat is meant to protect my face from harmful UV rays, according to the brand.
