India-UAE travel: PCR tests scrapped for fully vaccinated passengers, says Air India

With full flight services back, India makes a timely decision

Stock - India airport

Dubai: India has scrapped PCR testing for fully vaccinated passengers from UAE, according to Air India Express.

In a letter issued to travel agents, the carrier said that guests who have completed the full vaccination schedule of both doses from a list of recognised countries on 'reciprocity' basis are exempted from RT-PCR testing prior to departure for travel to India from UAE.

Air India circular

The COVID-19 vaccination certificate should be uploaded on the 'Air Suvidha' travel portal, said Air India Express. "All other guests should carry a negative COVID-19 PCR certificate and upload the same on Air Suvidha portal - the test should be conducted within 72 hours prior to departure," said the airline.

"The official declaration came today morning," said TP Sudheesh, General Manager at Deira Travel & Tourist Agency.

The reduced formalities will definitely encourage more passengers to travel. The book load towards to India is high now as thousands of visitors are going back after the Expo - TP Sudheesh of Deira Travel

Children under the age of 5 are exempted from pre and post-arrival testing, it added. The announcement means that there is no mandatory PCR testing for those traveling frequently between India and UAE.

Passenger traffic on the route will fully take off after airlines ramp up capacity. Emirates airline has already announced that it will raise weekly frequency of its flights to 170 a week to nine cities in India from early April.

After two years of COVID-19 created disruptions, the Indian government restored international flights in line with existing bilateral agreements.

A Refreshing Travel Experience with Air India Express

Thoughtful notifications and reliable customer support add an extra layer of convenience. Highly recommended for hassle-free and enjoyable journeys!

Worst customer Experience - not customer oriented

Hi, I am taking this opportunity to share the first experience with Air India Express. The luggage policy is pathetic as compared to other airlines. For instance, a family of 2 travelling with a infant when travelling with Indigo allowed the total checkin luggage - 15kg per adult and 7kg for infant, sums upto 37kg. The checkin counter executive & supervior at the Gwalior Airport, is incabale to understand how 2 adults will carry 3 luggae, 2 laptop bags and infant baby. This is so illogical asking the customer to shuffle the luggage at the counter/pay for the extra luggae. Total luggage was 33kg, so they asked for 1650INR for 3kg excess. However, they told if I get the new luggage bag and shuffle would help. So this clearly means AIR INDIA Express didnt consider the infant luggage of 7kg at all. Not travelling any more with this airline having such a experience. Regards, Shashank Garg PNR - N6PFTT

Air India Express Review [2024]: Low-cost, but will you regret it?

Air India Express Review [2024]: Low-cost, but will you regret it?

Looking to travel around India and beyond without spending a fortune? There's no shortage of options when it comes to finding a low-cost carrier in India. But which one should you choose? Air India Express is one such budget airline. Discover if it's the right choice for you!

air india express travel update

The sound of "low cost" and "airline" in the same sentence is often music to a budget traveler's ears. After all, airline travel is notorious for being expensive. So a carrier that offers decent rates without skimping on quality is definitely worth considering.

Air India Express ticks all the boxes. Similar to  Eurowings  and  Vueling Airlines , it's a low-cost airline. A subsidiary of the national carrier Air India, you can expect the same safety and service standards. If you're looking for a cheap way to get around India, Air India Express is definitely an option.

To help you make an informed decision, we've put together an Air India Express review. I cover everything you need to know about the airline, including in-flight service and more. Whether you're looking for a cheap way to travel within India or for international flights, stay tuned!

air india express logo

What is Air India Express?

Air India Express is a low-cost airline based in India. It's a subsidiary of the national carrier Air India and was established in 2004. The airline flies to over 33 domestic and international destinations, including popular holiday spots like Singapore, Dubai, and Bahrain.

What sets this airline apart from other low-cost carriers is that its part of a major airline group. You can expect the same standards without paying the higher prices that come with flying with a full-service airline.

What Are Air India Express' Hubs?

Air India Express prices are kept low by flying to secondary airports. So do bear in mind that you may need to factor in extra travel time to and from the city center.

It has four main hubs:

  • Calicut International Airport
  • Cochin International Airport
  • Trivandrum International Airport
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

The airline also has a base in Kochi, Kerala.

air india express flight

What Are Air India Express' In-Flight Services?

Air India Express offers a basic but efficient in-flight service. Frills and luxury are in short supply here, but you should get everything you need for a comfortable journey.

What to expect when flying:

  • As a low-cost carrier, the airline only offers Economy cabin class seats.
  • Complimentary snack boxes and beverages are served on all flights.
  • Additional Indian and international meals are available for purchase before and in-flight.
  • Checked baggage allowance based on fare type and route.
  • Advanced seat selection service. A bonus if you want to ensure you're seated next to your besties. Or you're gunning for that window seat!
  • Optional online visa to UAE.
  • Buy excess baggage online.

Air India Express also offers " Deals & Rewards " for their regular flyers. Under this scheme, members can enjoy discounts on duty-free purchases, hotels, resorts, safari bookings, and more.

Where Does Air India Fly?

With numerous domestic flights daily, this airline covers all the major cities in India. Planning on traveling outside of India? You'll be happy to know that the airline also flies to 14 international destinations!

Below is a list of the countries you can fly to on Air India Express:

  • Ras Al Khaima

How Safe is Air India Express?

Air India Express is part of the Air India Group, owned by the Government of India. The airline is, therefore, subject to the same high safety standards as its parent company.

A member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it's been awarded an IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification. The IOSA is an internationally-recognized safety assessment program for airlines.

As with most airline carriers, Air India Express has had its share of controversies. Namely, the Air India Express Flight 812 and Flight 1344 crashes. However, both planes were Boeing 737 aircraft, which have  featured in crashes  across various airlines. So we can safely claim that the fault is probably not specifically with the Air India Express airline or crew.

Booking and Cancelling Flights

You can book your flights online through the airline's website or through a travel agent. The easiest way to manage a booking is on its website. Here, you can log in to your account and make any necessary changes.

To book a flight, click on the "Manage my Bookings" tab on the Air India Express website. Then enter your confirmation number and last name. From here, you can view your booking details, edit your itinerary, and add extras such as baggage or seat selection.

Changed your mind and decided to spend a few more days exploring India? The good news is that the airline also offers a  24-hour cancellation policy . Cancel your flight within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time to receive a full refund.

Simply need to change your flight date or time? To do so, you'll also need to cancel your original booking and book a new one. Either way, select the "Cancel Booking" option and follow the instructions.

Booked your flight through a travel agent? Remember that you'd need to contact them directly to make any changes to your booking.

Alternatively, some people use websites like Skyscanner to find Air India Express flights. By using comparison sites, travelers can make sure they're getting the best possible deal.

Customer Service

If you need to contact customer service, you can do so by phone or email. The airline's customer service team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

To speak to someone on the phone, call the Air India Express customer service number: 044-40013001 or 044-24301930.

For general inquiries, you can also email them at [email protected].

air india express customer service

Web Check-In

Web check-in is offered for all passengers with a valid e-ticket. You can generally check in online 2 to 24 hours before your scheduled flight departure time.

To do so, click on the " Web Check-In " tab on the Air India Express website and enter your booking details. From here, you'll be able to select your seat, print your boarding pass, and check-in for your flight.

Remember that web check-in is unavailable for passengers with infants or those traveling on a group booking. You'll have to check in at the airport.

Baggage Allowance

With Air India Express, your  baggage allowance  depends on your route and flight. Be sure to check your ticket before you purchase and after, especially for connection flights.

Generally, you're allowed to bring one carry-on bag of up to 7 kg on board the aircraft. Plus, you're allowed to bring your laptop in a separate bag, purse, or sleeve. It won't count toward your cabin baggage weight, which is pretty handy.

Checked-in baggage rules apply:

  • Checked luggage included  in your ticket varies from 20 to 40 kg, depending on the route.
  • You can purchase additional luggage before your flight, which will be stowed in the cargo hold, subject to availability.
  • Your checked luggage size should not exceed 62 inches in total (length*breadth*height).
  • No single piece of checked baggage should weigh more than 32 kg.
  • Infants traveling with their guardians get an additional 10 kg check baggage allowance for free.
  • For overweight baggage at check-in, Air India Express may charge you an excess baggage fee.
  • You can check in sports equipment such as bicycles, golf kits, and skiing gear.

Air India Express FAQs

Can you track air india express flights.

You can track all flights using the airline's flight tracker tool. Simply enter your flight number and departure date to view up-to-date information on your flight's status.

Is Air India Express and Air India the same?

No, Air India Express is a low-cost subsidiary of Air India. The two airlines are separate entities with different business models and in-flight options.

What are the routes of Air India Express?

Air India Express flies to the Gulf and South East Asia from various cities in India. The complete list of destinations is mentioned above.

Is Air India Express Worth it?

If you ask me if Air India Express is worth flying, then I say a big YES! However, if you ask if it's the best low-cost airline in India, then I would say that it depends. There are many low-cost carriers that fly from or through India.

It's an excellent airline if you're looking for low fares and good service. I flew Air India Express from Chennai to Dubai and was impressed with the service, food, and overall experience.

However, I have also read many negative reviews about the airline. There have been reports of poor quality service, food, and cabin cleanliness. So, it all comes down to what you're looking for in an airline.

If you're a solo traveler who loves exploring hostels instead of hotels, give it a try. I would say that Air India Express is an excellent option as they offer good deals for single travelers.

Air India Aircraft Technicians Call Off Planned Strike, Avert Travel Chaos

The move offers some respite for India's aviation industry. (Representational)

Technicians at a company that repairs and maintains Air India Ltd. aircraft have called off a strike planned for Tuesday, easing concerns that the industrial action could spark a renewed bout of travel chaos.

Staff at AI Engineering Services Ltd. - a state-run company that counts Air India as its top client - won't go ahead with their plans after management agreed to meet some of their demands. That includes revisions to workers' pay by the end of the month and offering career progression opportunities by May 31, according to a joint letter from the company's chief human resources officer and the union secretary seen by Bloomberg News. The new measures will be valid for four years, it said.

The move offers some respite for India's aviation industry. Travel plans were thrown into disarray earlier this month after Vistara, jointly owned by Air India's owner Tata Group and Singapore Airlines Ltd., was forced to cancel more than 100 flights in the course of about a week after pilots called out sick en masse due to complaints about fatigue and pay cuts.

While the widespread cancellations have ceased, the airline cut back 25 to 30 flights a day to create a buffer in its rosters. Air India pilots joined their Vistara counterparts in complaining of being overworked and underpaid, saying the issues are systemic across Tata's aviation empire.

AI Engineering's staff previously said they were upset over a lack of career advancement opportunities, including not being promoted for seven years. And while management promised a revised pay structure for technicians who have worked for at least two years with the firm, they hadn't followed through, according to a letter earlier this month.

Additionally, the contractual employees who form 75% of the company's workforce, felt discriminated against because they have to serve longer notice periods and aren't given as many benefits as permanent staff, it said.

Compensation of rs 10 lakh approved for parents of 2 minor boys who drowned in open tank, bmc informs bombay hc.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that it had approved ad hoc compensation of Rs 5 lakh per victim to the parents of two minor boys who drowned in an open water tank at Maharshi Karve Garden in Central Mumbai’s Wadala earlier this month.

Dawoodi Bohra leader case: What are Syedna Qutbuddin’s claims?

Qutbuddin had in April 2014 filed a suit asking the High Court to restrain the late Syedna’s son from acting as the Dai-al-Mutlaq. He also sought entry to Saifi Manzil, the house of the Syedna in  Mumbai , alleging that Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin had taken over the leadership role in a “fraudulent manner”.

Qutbuddin claimed that after Burhanuddin became the new Dai-al-Mutlaq, taking over from his father Syedna Taher Saifuddin in 1965, he had publicly appointed his half-brother as the mazoon (second in command) and privately anointed him as his successor through a secret nass, prior to the mazoon announcement on December 10, 1965.

Qutbuddin died in 2016 in the USA. Since then, his son, Syedna Taher Fakhruddin is the plaintiff and is now seeking declaration as the leader by the High Court. Fakhruddin has claimed his father conferred the nass upon him and thus he should be declared the Dai.

How is the leader picked in the Dawoodi Bohra community?

As per faith and Dawoodi Bohra doctrine, a successor is appointed through “divine inspiration”. A “nass” (conferment of succession) can be conferred upon any deserving member of the community and not necessarily a family member of the current Dai, although the latter is often the practice.

What is the Dawoodi Bohra spiritual leader dispute?

The Dawoodi Bohras are a religious denomination among Shia Muslims. Traditionally a community of traders and entrepreneurs, it has over 5 lakh members in India and over 10 lakh members across the world. The top religious leader of the community is known as the Dai-al-Mutlaq.

In 2014, the 52nd Dai-al-Mutlaq, Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin, passed away, and his son, Mufaddal Saifuddin, succeeded him. This was challenged by the late Syedna’s half-brother, Khuzaima Qutbuddin, in the Bombay HC. Justice Gautam S Patel has been hearing the suit for its final disposal since November last year.

Who are the Dawoodi Bohras?

The Dawoodi Bohras are Shia Muslims whose leader is known as the Al-Dai-Al-Mutlaq. According to members of the community, there are around 1 million Dawoodi Bohras spread around the world.

For over 400 years, the leader of the community has been based in India, including the current and the 53rd leader, His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

Popular Marathi actor Swwapnil Joshi and other actors have made a pitch to give housemaids their pride of place in every household, without whom, they said, a family will struggle to keep its daily routine intact.

“We don’t realise the importance of a housemaid until she goes on leave. Once she goes on a long leave, the smooth functioning of a family is disrupted. It becomes a challenge for the family to ensure things are in order. It is this moment which makes us realise the significant role that a housemaid plays to keep a household intact and upfront,” said Swwapnil Joshi, who is one of the producers of ‘ Nach Ga Ghuma ‘, which is stated to be a maiden attempt at highlighting the bond between a maid and a family’s female head. The film’s trailer was released at  Pune  Patrakar Bhavan last week.

Two years on, ridership in suburban trains still down 13.2% over pre-pandemic levels

Even as it has been over two years since life has returned to normal after the Covid pandemic, Mumbai’s iconic suburban local train network, often hailed as the lifeline of the city, continues to witness a significant shortfall in its ridership over the pre-pandemic levels in 2019-20. Ridership data compiled for both Western and Central Railways suburban network of the Mumbai division over the past six financial years reveal that while the ridership slumped following Covid pandemic in the two years between 2020 and 2022, the aggregate passenger ridership across Western and Central railways (travelling on season ticket and daily ticket) was lower by 36.56 crore or 13.2 per cent in 2023-24 over that seen in 2019-20.
