Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station review: Neat and tidy modular power

A compact charger for your most important portable apple devices..

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

iMore Verdict

Taking up little desk space thanks to its vertically-oriented design, the Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station is a great rest spot for your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. Charging quickly and safely, its modular design makes it flexible to use, while an adjustable iPhone bracket lets it double as a video viewing stand, too.

Cables! Cables as far as the eye can see! Our modern need to charge many multiple devices before we go out of the house means that, if we want a tidy desk space or bedside table, investing in a multi-device charging dock is the way to go. The introduction of Apple’s MagSafe charging standard, which lets devices be wirelessly charged while held in place with strong magnets, has made a cottage industry for manufacturers looking to send power to our iPhones , AirPods and Apple Watches . But some prove so bulky that any gains made over cable management are lost to desk space woes instead.

There are no such problems for the Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station. Its upright orientation and clever modular design mean it slips easily onto a desk without disruption, while also doubling as a handy viewing stand for any video your iPhone may be playing. We recommend it without hesitation. Read on to find out why.

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: Price and availability

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station is available now, priced at $139.99. If you’re in the UK, it’s one of those rare occasions when you’ll get a better-priced deal on a gadget too, with the charging station priced at £109.99 in old Blighty.

It’d be a good deal at the US pricing, but it’s a real steal in the UK. For comparison, the Belkin Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad has an RRP of $149.99 / £139.99, and for my money, the Journey device is the better choice.

There’s a slight catch in that price though — there’s no wall plug included in the box (though a 1.5m USB-C to USB-C cable is packed in). So factor that into the overall cost if you haven’t got one spare.

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: What I love

A quick run down on the key specs before going into what’s made the Journey Rapid Trio my go-to charging stand. The Rapid Trio supports charging three devices at once — a MagSafe compatible iPhone ( iPhone 12 through iPhone 14 and beyond) an Apple Watch and MagSafe compatible AirPods too. Alternatively, you can swap the AirPods out for a second iPhone.

They’ll charge off a minimum 20W USB-C wall charger, connected by a single USB-C cable to the base, but higher-powered chargers will deliver faster charging speeds — Journey recommends its own 30W mini charger as an accompaniment, for instance. MFi certified, it’s smart enough to protect your battery health, and react to any potential temperature spikes to keep your device working at its best — I’ve experienced no charging connection or overheating problems in the weeks I’ve been using the Rapid Trio.

As mentioned, there are three charging areas on the stand — and two come with some very useful secondary features which make the Rapid Trio a particularly useful option.

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

First of all there’s the charging unit in the base of the device. Though it’s intended primarily for AirPods, it’ll happily charge an iPhone placed on it, too. It’s a great bit of flexibility that not all similar chargers offer.

The main charging station though is solely for an iPhone — a MagSafe connection that sits on a vertical arm, raising your device about 6-inches off the base. It’s a powerful magnetic connection that holds your phone firmly in place on a tilting hinge — powerful enough to hold the device horizontally, too. As a result, I’ve been using it on sleepless nights on my bedside table as a mini YouTube screen, displayed in widescreen. It’s something charging mats don’t allow for.

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

The most interesting element though is the Apple Watch charging plate. It’s a modular option included in the box — it clips into the back of the main iPhone charging bracket with a USB-C port. What’s great about it is that, because it pops in and out, you can easily take it with you alongside your MacBook, pop it in the side of your computer, and get a quick on-the-go battery boost to the wearable when away from the stand. It’s a neat extra and a handy secondary feature.

It’s generally just an attractive device, too. Whether you go for the black or white finish, it’s a relatively discreet design (dimensions a mere 169.3mm (H) x 133.58mm (D) x 85.63mm (W)) when not in use, with its metallic riser reassuringly sturdy.

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: What I don’t love

I’m nitpicking to find fault with the generally-excellent Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station, but if a second-generation device ever arrives, there are a few small tweaks I’d make.

Chief among them would be some sort of way of controlling the indicator light on the front edge of the base. A white light that slowly pulses when charging, it’s useful for seeing that your devices are charging at a glance. But at night it’s surprisingly bright and can prove distracting on a bedside table. Lowering the brightness or making it an optional feature would be better.

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

I’d like a little more weight in the base too. It’s a sturdy charger — I never worried about it toppling over with my iPhone 14 Pro attached, it’s well balanced. But the MagSafe connection is strong enough that it takes two hands to release the phone — one to pull the iPhone from the magnet, and one to keep the base in place. A little more weight in the base might make it easy to remove the phone with one hand. The design means it’s not a particularly travel-friendly device anyway, so some extra weight wouldn’t be a problem.

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

And though it’s a well-priced device — a bargain in the UK in particular — it’d be an even better deal with a charger in the box. Though, having said that, I appreciate we’ve all probably got a spare knocking about at this point, and any avoided e-waste is a good thing.

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: Competition

You have a ton of options when it comes to MagSafe chargers — including devices produced by Apple itself. Though AirPower remains a mythical failure, you can still pick up the one-device MagSafe Charger puck and travel-friendly MagSafe Duo Charger , as well as the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock . These will only charge one or two devices at a time though, and the Duo option is usually priced close to what this three-device option from Journey will set you back.

Belkin has a similarly-vertical charger in its upright Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charger . It’s usually a bit more expensive than the Rapid Trio, and it’s wider with its tree-like design, but that’s better if you want to keep an eye on your Apple Watch screen, too. We’ve also reviewed the Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad , which is similarly priced and great if you don’t have as much vertical space to play with. Its flat design makes it easier to travel with, too.

Belkin Boost Charge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad on a bedside table.

You can find lots of cheaper options out there from lesser-known brands, but we tend to avoid recommending them among our best wireless chargers for multiple devices lists, as battery health is so important to our gadgets. You want a charger that won’t burn out your iPhone, and thankfully all of the picks we recommend will take good care of your device’s health.

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if….

  • You have the trinity of wireless-charging-ready iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods
  • You’re sick of dealing with multiple plugs and cables
  • You want to use your Apple Watch as a bedside clock

You shouldn’t buy this if…

  • You only charge one device at a time
  • Your gear doesn’t support MagSafe
  • You need a charging station that you can travel with

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a bedside table

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: Verdict

The Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station is just what I want from a multi-device charger. It’s neat and tidy, not taking up unnecessary space, and doesn’t look ugly when not in use. It safely charges all my daily Apple devices, but does so with some added bells and whistles too — not least of all its removable Apple Watch charger. Priced appropriately, it’s a superb choice for anyone looking to power the core trinity of on-the-go Apple devices all at once.

Journey Rapid Trio 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station on a white background with Apple accessories

Bottom line: A neat charging station that has some modular extras for Apple Watch, and double as a viewing stand.

Get 30% off Journey’s new MagSafe-compatible, 3-in-1 wireless charger

By David Snow • 11:00 am, December 30, 2021

Journey's new 3-in-1 wireless charging station is MagSafe-compatible.

This MagSafe charger post is brought to you by Journey, a brand of Alogic.

You probably have cables to charge your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch. But wouldn’t it be great to charge them all at once, in one place, like on your nightstand or desk? Without a bunch of wires? With the handsome new Journey 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station, you can.

Journey’s newest charger also serves as a stand for your gadgets — and it looks good doing it. And, by the way, if you act fast, you can get the new charging station for 30% off with the coupon X30.

Journey 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: Convenience and style

Journey 3-in-1 charger allows hands-free functionality. Feel free to take a FaceTime call.

The company’s first 3-in-1 charger

Journey created the new 3-in-1 MagSafe-compatible wireless charging station to help you power up your iPhone 12 or 13, AirPods or AirPods Pro with wireless charging case, and Apple Watch (all models) — all at once, if you like. It’s a stylish and convenient addition to your nightstand, desk or side table by the front door.

The charger is the latest release in Journey’s growing range of MagSafe-compatible wireless chargers, the company said.

MagSafe compatibility equals convenience

Journey’s 3-in-1 wireless charging device works with Apple’s MagSafe technology, built into its latest handsets. The charger’s strong magnetic hold auto-aligns your iPhone 12 or 13 and securely holds it in place. And yet it’s still easy to snatch it back off the magnetic surface when you need it.

Of course, the charger works well with iPhones in MagSafe-compatible cases.

The charger requires just one USB-C cable connection between it and a wall charger. All charging of your devices is wireless. That cuts down on cable clutter, keeping your space neat.

Nice touches

Journey included a subtle white LED indicator that lets you know when your device batteries are charging, just to take away any doubt about whether you placed the device on the charger in just the right spot.

And speaking of placing devices on the charger, it’s also a good-looking stand for your gadgets. You can place your phone in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) orientation, and even rotate it 360 degrees. You can use it hands-free while it charges.

Meanwhile, your AirPods charging case and Apple Watch can power up at the same time, without being in the way. The Apple Watch sits neatly on a platform behind the magnetic iPhone charger. The AirPods sit in a shallow indentation in the stand’s base.

The charger’s base is sturdy, with nonslip feet that means it will stay put while it holds your devices. And it comes in your choice of two colors: black or white.

With a compact form factor, the charger is perfect for a small space like a bedside table. Also: note how few wires you see.

Designed for battery health and longevity

Journey’s new charger also helps keep your devices’ batteries healthy while charging fast. Over-current protection, over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection and foreign-object detection all help reduce wear on your device’s battery.

Plus, Journey said its new charging technology charges your phone two times more efficiently than many other chargers.

Built-in Apple Watch charger

The built-in Apple Watch charger works with all models and sizes of everyone’s favorite wearable.

Q: Does the Rapid TRIO only charge through MagSafe cases? What about other cases?

A: For the iPhone to attach magnetically, a MagSafe-compatible case must be used, or you can charge your phone without the case. Alternatively, use the included magentic ring to add MagSafe compatibilty to your phone or case.

Q: Does the charger support the latest Apple Watch Ultra & 8?

A: Yes, the Rapid TRIO works with Apple watch series 1-9, SE and Ultra 1/2.

Q: Can I use with my AirPods Pro?

A: Yes, the Rapid TRIO works with AirPods Pro and all generation of AirPods with wireless charging-enabled cases.

Q: How do I know if my case is MagSafe?

A: Check the specifications on your product’s packaging or online. Most MagSafe cases have a visible circular ring on the inside or outside of the case to indicate it in MagSafe compatible.

Q: Will it charge my Google Pixel earbuds?

A: If your earbuds support Qi wireless charging, yes.

Q: Will it work for an iPad as well?

A: No. Wireless chargers aren’t ordinarily designed to charge tablets. The Rapid TRIO is designed to wirelessly charge your smartphone, smartwatch, earbuds, and a second phone.

Q: Will the Rapid TRIO charge my iPhone 14?

A: Yes. It will charge iPhones 12 and onwards. If you have an earlier model iPhone, which is wireless charging compatible, you can attach the magnetic ring that comes in the box of the Rapid TRIO to equip it for MagSafe-compatible charging.

Q: Does the magnet have any side effects for my phone?

A: No. Today’s smartphones and accessories are unaffected by magnets. iPhones 12 and onwards feature magnets inside too.

Q: Can I charge my Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy with the Rapid TRIO?

A: Yes. The Rapid TRIO includes a MagSafe-compatible magnetic ring you can stick to the back of any wireless charging enabled Android phone to draw charging from the charger pad.

Q: How much power does my wall charger need to power the Rapid TRIO ?

A: We recommend a minimum 20W USB-C Power wall charger. You can purchase the Journey 30W Mini USB-C charger as well.

Customer Reviews

This charger looks nice and feels well made. Does the job it is designed to do. I like the light is not overly bright on the nightstand (I had to put tape over my previous charger's light). I chose this charger for the removable watch part as I don't have a mag airpod case at this time and wanted the usb-c plug in to be readily accessible for charging my airpods. Works like a charm as I just unplug the watch charger and plug in the usb-c cable. When I do upgrade my airpods I will get a mag case and use the charger as intended. Looks good and works well. 5 stars.

We are EXTREMELY pleased with our purchase and the help with our unit🤩

Have only had my charging station for a little more than a week, but I am totally pleased with it so far!Nice to not have to keep changing cables. It’s awesome!

I have been charging my devices in different locations now they are all together and fully charged every morning.

Very happy! No more cords all over. Great for using Standby on my phone, making it into a bedside clock.

Customer Reviews

I have been using for about a month now and wondered why it took me so long to get one. The phone mag safe is super strong and doesn’t fall off which is one thing I was concerned about. Super quick charge for all three devices and has really simplified my bedside table. Would highly recommend getting one of these

I’m very happy with the charger, it looks great and it works great! I just keep adding more Journey products to my collection. Great quality products.

Love it less cords and so functional

phone and ear buds charge fast.

I am giving a five star rating for the customer service after I gave a three star rating for the 3 in 1 one wireless charging station.

The product wasn't what I expected, and I decided to return it and to the credit of the team at Journey they made the process so easy and simple and took complete ownership of it.

I'm very impressed, even though the product wasn't right, the customer service was greatly appreciated how they handle their business. Thank you team.

How-To Geek

Belkin boostcharge pro (qi2) review: iconic 3-in-1 iphone charger refreshed.

The latest Belkin-designed wireless charger adds new tech and a tilting stand.

Key Takeaways

  • The Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand offers Qi2 compatibility and adjustable tilt for iPhones.
  • Priced at $149.99, this charger can power iPhones 12 and newer at 15W.
  • Qi2 is similar to Apple's MagSafe, making the BoostCharge Pro compatible with various devices but still great for iPhone users.

There are plenty of good 3-in-1 iPhone charging stands, but few are instantly recognizable as the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand . Instead of messing with the appearance, the company simply added Qi2 and a few tweaks to the new 2024 model.

journey 3 1 charger

Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Magnetic Wireless Charging Stand with Qi2

This next generation of Belkin's popular 3-in-1 stand features Qi2 compatibility, adjustable tilt for the magnetic iPhone pad, and a smaller base.

  • Smaller base size is helpful for smaller nightstands
  • USB-C plug instead of attached AC adapter
  • Tilting charger is more useful
  • Non-Apple Watch wearers need not apply
  • Price is at the high-end for iPhone charger

Price and Availability

The latest Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 charger is available in black and white. It retails for $149.99, the same price as the old MagSafe model which is now on sale on Belkin’s website .

Both the new and old models have three charging spots and can each power iPhones 12 and later at 15W. Both can fast-charge Apple Watches, Series 7 and newer, as well.

Specifications

How does qi2 differ from magsafe.

Qi2 is the second version of the Qi wireless charging standard. It bumps up the 7.5W speed to 15W and adds a magnetic ring for a centered charging alignment each time. If this sounds similar to Apple’s MagSafe technology, it’s because the Qi2 specs are borrowed or inspired by MagSafe—with Apple’s support.

That means that any device adopting Qi2 certification should work with all compatible chargers, including this new BoostCharge Pro.

To state the obvious, the BoostCharge Pro is still primarily geared toward iPhone owners, despite being more universally compatible. The main factor here is the Apple Watch charger. Apple’s watch only works with iPhones, so using an Android device here means that the spot is wasted.

The ideal situation would be for owners of multiple phones, both Android and iPhone. The Qi standard is backward compatible, so you can take advantage of the new tilting charger to lay any wireless capable phone on the charger when an iPhone is not attached.

Even though the bottom spot is advertised for charging AirPods, phones and other devices can still charge on the base as well. They’ll simply charge at a much slower pace.

An Ideal Nightstand iPhone and Apple Watch Charger

Ever since the first BoostCharge Pro debuted, I’ve loved its bold, modern design. That design still shines, even several years on.

Although it’s hard to tell at first glance, there are design tweaks that make it feel new and refreshed. The base is slightly smaller and more rounded on its sides. The Qi2 charger rotates, or tilts, up to 90 degrees. Instead of a permanently wired AC adapter on the end of the cable, there’s now a USB-C plug and a 36W power adapter in the box. It all adds up to a nicer experience, even if subtle.

The tilting phone charger is the new star of the show. Yes, you can flip it up to lay a phone or it horizontally, but more importantly, its smooth rotation allows for small viewing angle tweaks. No matter what height your bed or nightstand is, you can adjust the stand to be at the right angle. When an iPhone 15 or 15 Pro is turned sideways and in StandBy mode, your clock can also be at the perfect angle.

Although I never had much of a problem with the angle of the fixed-position charger, I loved being able to fully adjust my phone. Similarly, I never had much of an issue with the old base size, but the smaller one has definitely been a welcome change.

Bought for travelling and it fits the job perfectly ! Recommend it

Love my new 3-in-1 charger. Compact, looks good, devices fit on easily, charge well and there's no background noise to disturb me during the night. Have already recommended to family and friends.

This is a game changer, 1 wire neat powerful and easy for travelling. Looks good too. Having two of us with Apple kit the bedsides were looking like spaghetti junction of wires! No more lugging a huge gang and 6 separate wires when going away. Highly recommended !

Perfect multi charger for your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. Keeps your nightstand tidy and great for travelling.

Love the size of this charger and how it charges all my devices at once. I love all the journey chargers , would definitely recommend.

2024 NFL Draft: Five AFC teams that must ace the draft, including rebuilding Chargers, Patriots

Which clubs are under pressure to strike gold on draft day.

journey 3 1 charger

The 2024 NFL Draft is just weeks away. For all 32 teams, the event represents hope for the future. Hope for unearthing the next big thing. Hope for identifying and then cultivating the next generation of star talent. It also represents pressure. Many decision-makers, after all, can't afford to swing and miss when it comes to certain positions. And some teams, in particular, will be especially under the microscope for the selections they make (or don't make) come April 25-27.

Here are five teams in the AFC that "must" ace the draft, considering their current state and resources:

Buffalo Bills

For a team that's been knocking on the door of a Super Bowl run for a half-decade, the Bills aren't going the conventional route in supporting star quarterback Josh Allen ahead of 2024. After prioritizing splashy upgrades during Allen's early career emergence, they've finally paid due, shedding expensive stalwarts like Stefon Diggs , Tre'Davious White and Jordan Poyer . But that just means the pressure's on to replace proven starters on both sides of the ball. Especially with the rival New York Jets poised to make a leap as they get healthy under center.

Denver Broncos

No one batted an eye when they ate a historic amount of money just to dump Russell Wilson , but now comes the hard part: identifying and acquiring a quarterback of the future. Sean Payton clearly has all the control here, but fixing the most important position is easier said than done, especially with most passable veterans already signed and Denver picking No. 12 overall in the first round -- well past the consensus top prospects at set to go. They also don't own a second-rounder, possessing just two picks in the top 120 selections, raising the stakes.

Los Angeles Chargers

In many ways, they're playing the same game as the Bills, tearing down rather than building up around their highly paid star quarterback. It's simply the cost of the previous regime's spendy activity. There are clear voids to be filled, with vets like Austin Ekeler , Keenan Allen and Mike Williams sent packing. But with a No. 5 overall pick and two fourth-rounders, they have the ammunition to leave the draft with a handful of premium adds on both sides of the ball; a trade back on Day 1, for example, might net them an additional early round opportunity.

New England Patriots

Unlike other early first-round teams like the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders , the Patriots don't necessarily have a passable lineup into which a rookie quarterback can be dropped. And yet everyone, including new coach Jerod Mayo, knows full well that the team needs a major investment under center, likely at No. 3 overall. Can they secure the right guy there? Better yet, can they manufacture a near-miracle and use their remaining picks to give the incoming passer some legitimate help?

New York Jets

The Jets are in a unique situation where they have to be laser-focused on two realities: 1.) Aaron Rodgers is 40, coming off a serious injury, and thus requires as much immediate help as he can get for a Super Bowl bid; 2.) Rodgers is also almost certainly approaching the end of the line, requiring the team to prepare for his eventual exit. Either way, additional offensive line and pass-catching help is a priority, though general manager Joe Douglas is without a second-round selection. A smart pick or trade out of No. 10 overall could shape the whole trajectory.

Best NFL Draft Picks of the Past 10 Years

Many of the players selected in later rounds became superstars. But a few of the players were taken in the first round, including our top choice.

  • Author: Matt Verderame

In this story:

The best NFL draft picks of the past 10 years include quarterbacks, receivers, defensive linemen and a tight end. Check out @MattVerderame’s ranking of the top 10:

Let’s be clear off the top: This isn’t about the best players and who went where over the past decade in the NFL draft. It’s about value and how that marries with selecting an elite talent.

Of course, there are a few times where a player went in the first round, and he was still an exceptional get at his draft slot. Think Patrick Mahomes. But many of the names below are from later rounds, players who were seen as Day 2 and 3 talents who became superstars.

Which ones were the top tier of the past decade? Let’s break it down.

10. Maxx Crosby, DE, Las Vegas Raiders

  • Draft slot: 2019, Round 4, Pick 106

A two-time second-team All-Pro, Crosby has established himself as one of the league’s best pass rushers. Throughout his five-year career with the Raiders, the 2019 fourth-rounder has 52 sacks. He’s also led the league in tackles for loss with a combined 45 the past two seasons. Few players are more disruptive on a down-to-down basis than Crosby.

9. George Kittle, TE, San Francisco 49ers

  • Draft slot: 2017, Round 5, Pick 146

There’s something about pick No. 146. Stefon Diggs and Matthew Judon were also taken with that selection over the past decade, but nobody has been better from this spot than Kittle. The 49ers tight end has put forth a Hall of Fame resumè, with a trio of 1,000-yard seasons and four All-Pro team selections. He’s also one of the best blocking tight ends in NFL history.

8. Chris Jones, DT, Kansas City Chiefs

  • Draft slot: 2016, Round 2, Pick 36

Jones has been a cornerstone of Kansas City’s dynasty. He’s arguably one of the 10 greatest players to ever play defensive tackle, already amassing 75.5 sacks, including three double-digit sack campaigns. Jones has also been an All-Pro five of the past six years, all of which have seen the Chiefs reach the AFC title game.

7. Davante Adams, WR, Las Vegas Raiders

  • Draft slot: 2014, Round 2, Pick 53

Adams has been one of the league’s best receivers over the past 10 seasons. Between his time with the Green Bay Packers and Raiders, he has over 10,000 receiving yards along with five seasons of at least 1,100 yards. Going into his age-32 season, Adams remains one of the elite wideouts in the game.

6. Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson

Jackson is a two-time NFL MVP in his six seasons.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

  • Draft slot: 2018, Round 1, Pick 32

Jackson has proven to be one of this century’s biggest steals. In Baltimore, he has won a pair of MVP awards, one vote shy of being unanimous on both occasions. He has also made the playoffs every year but one of his six seasons, taking the Ravens to the AFC championship game in 2023. All told, Jackson has registered 154 touchdowns and more than 21,000 total yards.

5. Brock Purdy, QB, San Francisco 49ers

  • Draft slot: 2022, Round 7, Pick 262

Is it possible to find better value than Purdy with the final pick of the 2022 draft? Initially considered the third-string quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy emerged as the starter due to a Garoppolo injury and was a rookie sensation, helping San Francisco to the NFC title game. In ’23, Purdy threw for 4,280 yards and 31 scores, leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

4. Aaron Donald, DT, Los Angeles Rams

  • Draft slot: 2014, Round 1, Pick 13

Although he’s the only retiree on this list, Donald was so brilliant that he has to be on it. In 10 years with the Rams, Donald racked up 111 sacks despite constant double-teams. He was named a first-team All-Pro eight times and dominated inside during the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI win over the Bengals. He’ll walk into Canton as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

3. Tyreek Hill, WR, Miami Dolphins

  • Draft slot: 2016, Round 5, Pick 165

Hill has become the premier weapon in football, making the Pro Bowl each of his eight NFL seasons while garnering first-team All-Pro honors on five occasions. Last year, he caught 119 yards for a league-high 1,799 yards.

2. Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas Cowboys

  • Draft slot: 2016, Round 4, Pick 135

Cowboys fans may have a love-hate relationship with Prescott, but finding a borderline top-10 quarterback in the fourth round is obscene value. Prescott has guided the Cowboys to four NFC East titles and a pair of playoff victories, albeit falling short of the conference title game. He’s thrown for 29,459 yards and 202 touchdowns across eight campaigns.

1. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes has never failed to reach the AFC championship game in his six years as a starter.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

  • Draft slot: 2017, Round 1, Pick 10

Mahomes is the only choice. He’s the best player in football, a generational talent who has won three Super Bowls in six years as a starter. He’s a two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl MVP, has two 5,000-yard seasons and has never failed to reach the AFC championship game. Selected 10th, he is the best value of the past decade.

Honorable mention: Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills (2017–1–7); Stefon Diggs, WR, Houston Texans (2015–5–146); T.J. Watt, Edge, Pittsburgh Steelers (2017–1–30); Cooper Kupp, WR, Los Angeles Rams (2017–3–69); Fred Warner, ILB, San Francisco 49ers (2018–3–70); Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings (2020–1–22); Micah Parson, Edge, Dallas Cowboys (2021–1–12)

Here's how much money I made as a software engineer at Meta, Apple, and Oracle

  • Sandeep Rao is a software engineer who has worked at Meta, Apple, and Oracle.
  • When he first started his career as a new graduate, his compensation was only $15,000.
  • He explains how, thanks to high performance and negotiation skills, he now makes nearly $700,000.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sandeep Rao, a 32-year-old software engineer based in San Jose, California. Business Insider has verified his income with documentation. This essay has been edited for length and clarity.

My salary journey in Big Tech has seen my total compensation — which includes base salary, bonuses, and stocks — increase from $15,000 in 2012 to $685,000 in 2024.

I'm a staff software engineer and have worked at three different tech companies, moving from Oracle to Apple to Meta. Over my career, I've led the development of successful software apps and features from scratch that are used every day by millions of people across the world.

While I have made my career moves primarily based on which areas of software engineering I'd get to work on, compensation is also important to me, so I've been strategic and negotiated for higher salaries with each move.

Tech companies use tools like additional equity to retain high-performing employees. In my experience, if you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.

I took a low-paying job to get my foot in the door

While I got my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering , I realized midway through college that software engineering was my passion and pivoted to pursue a career in software instead.

My first job was as a software developer at Oracle in India. While Oracle isn't generally low-paying in the tech industry, my salary of 850,000 rupees, or $15,000, was low compared to what new grads were making at that time in competing Big Tech companies like Microsoft or Amazon because it was a "take it or leave it" new grad offer.

The work was unappealing to me because it didn't align with my career interests — I didn't want to continue building expertise in that specific area of software engineering — but I took it to get my foot in the door of a Big Tech company and build credibility.

I knew I eventually wanted to end up where all the action is — Silicon Valley . I worked at Oracle from 2012 to 2014, and during this time, I applied to graduate schools in the US because I felt a formal computer science degree would help me compete with the talented people in the Valley.

I got accepted into a graduate program in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I left behind my family and friends in India and moved to the US with nothing but a suitcase and $65,000 in student debt.

Grad school was hard, but the doors it opened for me made the struggle worth it.

I was ecstatic to get a job at Apple

I finished grad school and got a job as a software engineer at Apple in Cupertino, California, where my base salary was $115,000.

I was ecstatic to work at one of the best companies in the world and felt my dreams were coming true. But I realized I wanted to work on more direct user-facing applications rather than on technology that ran under the hood.

Initially, I considered looking for new opportunities within Apple, but between high taxes, the high cost of living, and my student loans, I felt more compelled to switch companies, given that I'd likely receive a significant salary bump .

I had gotten a very small cost-of-living raise on my base salary at Apple, but it wasn't significant; not getting a bigger raise wasn't a big motivator in my decision to change companies, but it certainly made my choice easier.

My negotiation skills helped me get a 10% salary increase

At the end of 2017, I moved to Meta (then Facebook) in Menlo Park, California. I wanted to experience the culture of younger internet-based companies whose products are used by billions of people.

When I received my offer, I did my research to get a clear understanding of what my market value was and what salary I wanted to land on. I also learned what parts of my total compensation are negotiable, such as stocks and the sign-on bonus, and what is non-negotiable, like base salary and annual bonuses.

I was prepared to negotiate and walked away with an offer of $140,000, which was 10% more than their original offer.

In 2021, I landed a large-scale project at Meta that added a lot of value to the Messenger app and worked with several cross-functional teams across engineering, design, data science, and legal.

My accomplishments, such as this one, and high performance at work got me the promotions, visibility, and leverage to negotiate for higher pay and a successful salary journey.

Every year between 2018 to 2023, my base salary increased — as did my total compensation — through a combination of performance-based yearly stock refreshers, additional boosts from promotions, and stock market appreciation.

Compensation in a tech career usually gets more and more equity-heavy than salary-heavy, so base salaries don't increase as quickly as equity, but my salary and total annual compensation steadily rose:

In 2024, I'm projected to make $685,000 through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock.

Five strategies for increasing my compensation package

Over the years, I learned five salary strategies that helped me grow my salary and overall compensation:

1. Always do your homework about market rates for your role, level, and location — especially when you switch jobs.

Switching jobs is a good way to increase your income.

Even if money may not be the primary motivator for a job switch, I always make sure to be conscious and strategic about my compensation by doing salary research to avoid leaving any money on the table.

When I started doing salary research during my switch to Meta, I found out my market value was much higher than what I was making at Apple at that time. This helped me start my negotiations with Meta at the market rate rather than the salary I was making.

I used Levels.fyi , Blind , and Glassdoor to find salary information and clearly understand my market value. Keep yourself updated on these benchmarks even if you don't plan on a job change anytime soon, so you know you're on par with the market, and any salary difference is offset by other factors such as better work-life balance.

2. Never let your bad salary "baggage" carry over to your new job.

If your salary isn't up to market standards right now, don't let it affect your pay at the next job. Otherwise, it'll lead to a cycle where you'll be underpaid for the rest of your career.

Employers and recruiters could use your salary history to give you only a modest raise, while your actual market value could easily be double or triple your most recent salary.

In California, labor laws make it illegal for employers to ask you about your current salary and salary history. You're also allowed to ask potential employers for the pay range for the position you're applying for.

If your state has similar protections, just being aware of this law can help you make any corrections to your pay during negotiations. This helped me start offer negotiations from my market value instead of my current pay.

3. Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith to make that 10x impact on your career.

That could involve switching from a non-tech job to a tech job or taking a short-term hit for long-term gain. For example, I picked Oracle for my first job despite the low pay and unappealing work so I could build credibility to get into a Tier 1 grad school.

I also took a loan of about $65,000 to pay for Carnegie Mellon, even though I could have chosen to go to a cheaper public university.

Deciding to work at Oracle and attend Carnegie Mellon cost me a few years and a lot of debt, but doing so opened doors unlike anything else, and I haven't looked back ever since.

4. Negotiate to keep your base salary from falling behind

It's inevitable for your salary to fall behind as you stay longer at a company, especially in tech due to restricted stock unit (RSU) "cliffs."

Most RSU packages offered to new employees in the tech industry have a two- to four-year vesting period. Unless the employer offers a significant pay bump along the way, total compensation usually takes a drop after this vesting period. Many companies also offer annual performance-based stock refreshers to lower this salary gap, but they're usually not as large as the initial grant.

If you love working at your company and feel forced to move just to get a raise, you can ask your senior leadership to make a "correction." After all, it's much more expensive and time-consuming for employers to hire new people than to retain good employees.

Most Big Tech companies have employee retention programs like additional or discretionary equity. Additional equity programs are mainly used to retain high-performing employees, so they're usually highly selective.

This is how I was able to keep my compensation at or above market level despite spending six years at Meta. When I was reaching the end of my vesting period in my fourth year, I had a conversation with my senior leadership to see if there was any room for a pay correction so I could go back to focusing on my work 100% without worrying about salary.

Being prepared with my predicted compensation drop and market data greatly helped me build a cogent narrative going in. If you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.

5. Don't assume people will reward your work or anticipate your needs — ask.

Always ask for what you want , whether it's a raise or that interesting project that just came in. The worst that will happen is you'll get a "no." If you don't ask, nobody will know, or even worse, people may assume that you're happy with what you have and move on.

I used this strategy when I heard of a new company initiative and asked to be a founding engineer because I was looking to create more impact in my role. Despite the high risk and ambiguity involved, I successfully delivered on the projects, which eventually led to a promotion. None of this would've been possible if I hadn't asked.

At the end of the day, you're your biggest advocate when it comes to your salary and career journey. There's no substitute for hard work, but being strategic about how you achieve your goals can go a long way. Sometimes, you have to take big risks and step out of your comfort zone to get that high-paying dream job.
