The best times to visit Seoul are spring (March to mid-May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is mild and the city is vibrant with cherry blossoms or colorful fall foliage. Spring features cultural events like the Seoul Marathon, while fall offers traditional festivals such as Chuseok, making each season ideal for experiencing the city’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a major tourist destination, thanks to its bustling modern culture as well as its historic roots. Seoul is actually home to some amazing historical sites, such as traditional Bukchon Hanok Village and Changdeok Palace.

Most visitors come to the city for its hypermodern city center and excellent cultural scene, including K-pop gigs and merch shops, world-famous clubs in the Hongdae district, and excellent food and shopping.

Seoul is a must-visit destination on any trip to South Korea, but like any city, some seasons are better than others. But don’t worry — we’ll show you the best, least busy, cheapest, and worst times to visit below; let us be your guide!

Overall Best Time to Visit Seoul

The best time to visit Seoul is in the spring (March to mid-May) or fall (September to November), when the weather in town is the best. The climate in Seoul is temperate , like in most of South Korea.

There are drastic differences between seasons, especially when it comes to temperature. Spring and fall have the mildest temperatures, compared to the extremes of winter and summer. Spring is warm and pleasant.

March can be a bit cool, with average high temperatures around 50 degrees towards the beginning of the month.

Later in the season, it gets even warmer, with average temperatures in April around 63 degrees, and May averaging at 73 degrees Fahrenheit, which is perfect weather for walking around in short sleeves.

Japan’s cherry blossoms may be more famous, but Seoul also has cherry blossoms. The trees usually blossom in early April, and areas such as Namsan Park are beautiful.

Spring is also the best season for rowing down the Han River, a popular local pastime. In recent years, spring has become more popular among visitors. While this means more crowds, it also means there are more festivals and pop-up events.

The Seoul Marathon  (March) draws runners from around the world and the National Museum concert series, which begins in April. Fall is another season with mild, pleasant weather.

Average temperatures in September are around 77 degrees Fahrenheit, a welcome break from the hot, muggy summer. By October, the weather is much cooler, around 66 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall is also much sunnier than summer, and you can expect fewer storms.

The cooler weather brings changing fall foliage. The mountains around Seoul are gorgeous during this time, and it is the perfect season for day trips.

Fall is also the best season to visit if you want to see traditional Korean festivals. One of the biggest festivals of the year is Chuseok , the mid-autumn harvest festival.

In September, Koreans go home to visit family, eat foods prepared just for this festival, and hold ritual processions (and create legendary traffic jams as everyone in Seoul tries to go home to their ancestral villages).

Cheapest Time to Visit Seoul

The cheapest time to visit Seoul is in the winter, the city’s low season. Winter tends to get the fewest visitors in Seoul because there are fewer festivals and the weather is very cold.

The benefit is that hotel rooms are lower than they are during the rest of the year. In mid-January, you can save 20% to 25% on hotel rooms compared to summer prices. The biggest expense that you can save on during the winter is on flights.

Getting to Seoul can be expensive from Europe or North America since flights are so long, but they are cheaper in winter when there is less demand. Early December and early January tend to have the lowest prices.

Keep an eye out for sales by the main national carrier, Korean Air, which tend to happen in January and early February. Prices tend to increase slightly around Seollal , or Korean Lunar New Year.

This festival happens in late January/early February (the exact dates change each year). However, costs are still lower than visiting in the summer or autumn, and you’ll get to experience special meals, traditional dances, and other folk customs at historic areas around the city.

Least Busy Time to Visit Seoul

The least busy time to visit Seoul is in the winter, when the city receives its lowest load of tourists compared to the rest of the year. However, it’s never going to be completely empty.

The city itself is massive, with a population of 9.5 million people. However, during the winter popular tourist sites are less crowded because the city receives fewer international visitors. The weather is a major reason why tourists tend to avoid Seoul during this time.

Winters can be bitterly cold, with average high temperatures in January just barely above freezing. At night, temperatures can get as low as 22 degrees Fahrenheit .

However, some advance planning and a good winter coat can make your wintertime experience in Seoul a pleasant one. There are fewer people around, so this is a great time to experience the city’s indoor attractions, such as museums and shopping malls, without having to elbow other tourists for space.

Winter is also the best time to visit for lovers of Korean cuisine. Koreans eat seasonally, and many locals say that wintertime is the best season for eating.

Restaurants are serving spicy stews and meals that warm you up from the inside, and the streets are full of vendors selling roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and other winter snacks.

Worst Time to Visit Seoul

The worst time to visit Seoul is the summer. Like much of East Asia, Seoul gets crowded, muggy, and very hot in the summer. The weather in Seoul is highly unpleasant from June to August.

The days are very hot, with average high temperatures in the low 80s. However, due to the high humidity and lack of green areas in many parts of the city center, it feels much hotter.

It’s no wonder that many locals try to escape the city in the summer. Summer is also South Korea’s monsoon season. From June to early August, almost all of the country’s annual rain falls. The monsoons bring heavy rain, winds, and flooding.

They bring Seoul to a standstill and sometimes cause deaths . It’s better to avoid traveling during this time; not only is it unpleasant, but it’s also downright dangerous.

Most tourists didn’t get the memo that summer has the worst weather in Seoul, or they have to travel during this time due to work and school breaks. June, July, and August are three of the most crowded months in all of South Korea.

Expect packed flights, hotel rooms booked in advance (and for high prices), and very long lines at popular attractions. However, you can still have a good experience in summertime if you plan properly.

Check the weather forecast ahead of time and try to book indoor activities, such as galleries and shopping malls, for times of day that are rainy and hot. Summer also has the most events celebrating modern Korean pop culture, which is quickly shaping global culture as well.

The season of spring in Seoul begins in mid-March, and it continues until the month of June. Spring is often considered as the shoulder season to visit Seoul. Spring in Seoul becomes pleasant, and the temperature remains quite enjoyable. In the month of April,  Seoul cherry blossoms  begin, and during this time, the beauty of the city blooms up, and it gets covered in a sheet of gorgeous pink flowers. The temperature can go as low as 1°C, while the highest temperature is 23°C.

The weather in Seoul during the months of spring remains mild, so you may want to pack some warmer outerwear for the colder days. However, it is also advisable to keep a waterproof jacket for the days when the weather will be unpleasant. Keep a proper pair of waterproof hiking shoes, if you will be going o n a hiking expedition, especially in the month of March. Mount Inwangsan (just on the outskirts of the city) offers great hiking and picture-perfect views.

Summer in Seoul commences in the month of July, and it lasts until August. Seoul in summer, witnesses a massive footfall of tourists, and hence, is also considered as the busiest tourist season in Seoul.

But, when it comes to weather, the months of summer becomes unpleasant and unfavorable. Summer in Seoul is sweltering and humid, so be sure to check out these tips for visiting Seoul during summer . Also, the season witnesses massive rainfall.

Because of being a peak season, the prices of flight tickets and  hotels in Seoul   remain higher during these months. If you can tolerate the harsh weather conditions, then you can visit Seoul during this time. In summers, the temperature of Seoul ranges between 18°C and 32°C .

Consider packing light clothes to remain comfortable throughout your visit to Seoul in summer. Lightweight travel pants and tees are the perfect options to wear during these months. Also, keep an umbrella or a lightweight rain jacket to deal with the downpours that sometimes happen in the summer season.

Seoul in Autumn

The month of September marks the onset of autumn in Seoul, and it ends in November. Autumn is another best time to visit Seoul as the temperature in th is season remains warm to mild. However, it is one of the driest times of the year in the city.

As a result, Seoul in autumn receives much attention from tourists. The best thing about this season is the fall colors under a stunning backdrop. The temperature of Seoul during autumn goes as high as 26°C, whi le d ipping as low as 2°C in late autumn.

If you are planning to visit Seoul in autumn, then it is best to pack some warm clothes. Make sure to pack some warm base layers for cooler days. Also, bring a comfortable fleece jacket and something a bit warmer to wear for the outer layer. A raincoat or jacket is also a must for those rainy days.

Autumn is probably one of the best seasons for hiking and there are tons of cool day trip options from Seoul . If you are indulging in a Bukhansan hike , make sure to pack sturdy hiking shoes.

Seoul in Winter

The season of winter in Seoul begins in the month of December and lasts until mid-March. I guess there is no need to tell what this season is all about. The weather remains cold and chilly. It is not an unfavorable time to visit; however, if you are not a fan of cooler temperatures, then it is better to avoid this season to explore Seoul.

Since Seoul in winter doesn’t receive a high footfall of tourists, the prices of accommodations and flight tickets are relatively lower during these months. But, what I love about visiting Seoul in this season is Seoul’s palaces and shrines that are covered with a sheet of snow and offer exquisite views to relish. Since winter in Seoul is quite cold, the temperature of the city during this time ranges from -5°C to 4°C.

I guess there is no need to tell what to pack for winters in Seoul. But, seeing that the season of winter witnesses a considerable snowfall, it’s good to pack some warm clothes. A warm hardshell jacket would be suitable for outerwear. Also, make sure to pack a pair or two of warm gloves, a hat, and a scarf. To protect your feet from getting frozen in the chilly snowy conditions, bring a pair of waterproof boots or shoes along.

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul?

Korea is a country of four VERY different seasons. With weather varying from -20 – 40 degrees throughout the year, it is important to plan your visit ahead.

One of the most common questions that I receive about Korea is ‘when is the best time to visit Korea?’. This post is here to help with deciding when you should visit Korea. While the information in this post is relevant to all of South Korea, it is specifically targeted at Seoul.

This post will mainly cover the best seasons to visit Seoul, but it won’t go in-depth into the best activities in every season. I have already covered every season individually in separate posts which can be found below:

Best Times To Visit Seoul

The best season to visit Seoul really depends on what you want to see while you are here. Spring has cherry blossoms , and fall has stunning foliage. However, while these are generally the seasons that I recommend visiting in, some people do prefer summer and winter.

Therefore, while I will discuss some of the best times to visit Seoul below, it is worth mentioning that these aren’t the only good times to visit! No matter when you visit you can have a great time. It’s all down to preference.

With that being said, for the vast majority of people visiting in May or June will be more comfortable than July or August. The weather can reach 40 degrees on the most extreme days and rain is plentiful. With that in mind, I picked some of the months that I would recommend to anyone visiting.

Spring – Cherry Blossoms and Beauty

Witnessing the spectacular cherry blossoms can be rather difficult due to the short period that they are in full bloom. Usually, they will be spectacular for about 5 days after the first bloom. 

Unfortunately, this period is also very hard to predict. Usually, cherry blossom season begins at around March 20th and finishes in mid-April. The cherry blossom season begins in the south and gradually works up towards Seoul.

The official cherry blossom schedule is usually only released a few weeks prior. This is due to the unpredictability of the weather. You can get an idea about what the schedule usually looks like from the 2019 Cherry Blossom Forecast .

The cherry blossom season can last for about a week. However, if the weather is bad, it can be significantly shorter. Both rain and wind will damage the blossoms and sometimes the best viewing period will only last a few days.

Fall – Stunning Foliage and Nice Weather

If you are looking for the mildest weather and the most beautiful nature, then fall is the best time to visit South Korea. 

The Korea fall foliage season begins at the end of September and continues through the whole month of October. Generally, Seoul foliage is at its peak in the second half of October. 

Not only is this season spectacular due to the stunning colours and nature, but it is also a great time to do outdoor activities. The weather isn’t too hot or too cold, and this makes it ideal for exploring Korea.

Summer & Winter – Best Months

Summer in Korea is also beautiful! Especially at Seoul Forest .

While spring and fall tend to be most people’s preferred time to visit, summer and winter also have their appeal. 

If you want to experience the summer activities in South Korea , the best time tends to be late May and June. Summer temperatures usually peak in July, and the summer weather is far more pleasant in the earlier half of the season.

If you are interested in learning to surf in Korea or experiencing some of the stunning beaches , then May and June are the best times. This is due to the weather being nice (and sunny) but not yet being overly hot.

If, on the other hand, you want to experience the Korean winter , consider visiting in December. Visiting in December means you get to experience winter without having the extreme dryness of February. 

Usually, the first snowfall is in late November/early December. This makes late December and early January a great time to experience the winter activities and attractions of Korea.

Times to Avoid Visiting Seoul

Winter in Korea can be stunning. It can also be incredibly cold and dry.

You can have an amazing time in Korea no matter when you visit. Just keep in mind that these times are often avoided by travellers due to the unpleasant weather conditions. In the case of Chuseok and Seollal, you may find that a lot of activities and locations are closed for the holiday.

Chuseok is a Korean holiday which lasts for 3 days (although it is usually joined with a weekend, making the celebration 5 days long). This holiday usually occurs at the end of September/start of October.

Dates: 2020 – September 30th to October 4th. 2021 – September 18th to September 22nd. Updated dates can be found here .

Reasons to avoid Chuseok: Chuseok is Korea’s largest national holiday and it is a time when families reconnect. While some stores and attractions will remain open, a large amount will be closed. It is a very peaceful time and the cities will be very quiet for a few days. 

However, if you have plans during Chuseok you may find them interrupted. Many national attractions will remain open, and some will offer free admission for the period of the holiday. This includes palaces and national museums among other attractions. However, many private stores and businesses will be closed. 

If you expect to travel within Korea during this event, expect to pay astronomical prices for transport. Especially if you haven’t booked months in advance.

Seollal is another holiday similar to Chuseok. The event represents the lunar new year and usually takes place in late January or early February.

Dates: 2020: January 24th – January 26th. 2021: February 12th to February 14th. Updated dates can be found here .

Reasons to avoid Seollal: Seollal is much like Chuseok in that many places will be closed. While the event isn’t as major as Chuseok, you may still find that it interrupts your plans.

During Seollal many privately owned businesses and attractions will be closed. The whole city of Seoul will also become very quiet as families visit their homes. While it can be a great time to look around in peace, make sure that the attractions you want to visit operate through the holiday.

As with Chuseok, make sure to book any domestic trips that you want to take months in advance. Transport costs will skyrocket for the Seollal period.

July and Early August

July and August bring a lot of rain to the peninsula.

Not only are July and August the peaks of summer, but they are the beginning of the monsoon season. Not only are the temperatures often unpleasant (up to 40 degrees), but it is also incredibly muggy and at times, very very wet. 

While the monsoon season continues throughout August, it is generally at its worst in the first half of the month. 

Reasons to avoid July and August: Not only are these to hottest months in the year, but the rain can also ruin plans very easily. July and August are best spent enjoying the beaches in Korea along with festivals like the Boryeong Mud Festival. 

However, for normal tourist activities such as visiting the palaces, this is a very unpleasant time. If you are visiting Busan or a coastal city, you will have a much better time in these months. Make sure to avoid visiting Seoul in late July and early August if you can help it. 

Late January and Early February

Korea in winter is beautiful. Unfortunately, it’s also very chilly!

Likewise to July and August being the peak of summer, January and February are the peak of winter. Throughout these months the weather is often -10 and sometimes as low as -20. While this might not seem low for some people, it is also extremely dry. 

This can make doing any outdoor activities unpleasant and can make a trip to Korea rather limiting.

Reasons to avoid early January and February: While the weather won’t seem cold for everyone, the dryness makes spending time outdoors quite unpleasant. If you want to experience winter in Korea, then December is your best choice.

December and early January are usually also the best times to see snow in Korea. While snow is rather unpredictable and big snowfalls only occur once or twice every winter, these months are your best bet.

Best Seasons to Visit Seoul

Wondering what season is the best to visit Seoul? You’ve come to the right place! In this section, I will go over the weather in each season as well as the activities and highlights of each of the four seasons.

In Korea, there are four very distinct seasons – each of which lasts for around three months. Although this means that Korea has many different attractions and activities every season, it can also make it very difficult to decide when to visit Korea.

I am not exaggerating when I say that Korea feels totally different from season to season. Winter, for example, can make the cities feel quite dreary. On the other hand, spring always makes the country feel very lively and exciting.

Spring is a very popular time to visit Seoul as it is the cherry blossom season. Not only that, but it also has some of the mildest weather of the Seoul seasons.

Temperature: Spring in Seoul begins in March and continues until late May. March weather usually has highs between 10 and 15 degrees and lows down to 0 degrees. In April, the weather will warm up a bit with temperatures widely ranging from 15-28 degrees highs and 5-12 lows. In May, the highs are usually within the ’20s and the lows will be in the mid-teens.

The best time to visit Seoul in spring depends on what kind of climate you prefer. March can still be a bit cold for some people, and many prefer April and May.

Generally, weather in spring is calm with no major standout features. The biggest weather element is yellow-dust. In spring the dust blows from eastern China over South Korea and it can make a fine-dust mask necessary at times. The good news is that usually there will also be some clear days.

If you are on a short term visit then the dust won’t have serious effects (which you can read more about here – Seoul Fine Dust ). However, it may limit visibility and will make some attractions such as Namsan Tower and Lotte Tower a bit less breathtaking. Considering that the dust makes it harder to breathe though must mean that it IS breathtaking?

While the daytime weather in Seoul in spring is very mild, it is worth noting that the nights can still be cold. Especially in March! If you plan to do activities at night , make sure to pack some warm clothes.

What to Wear in Seoul Spring

In spring you want to make sure to pack for two different types of weather. Make sure to bring T-shirts and cooler clothing for the warmer days. However, make sure to also bring a light jacket, light jersey, and other light (but warm) clothing for the colder days.

Spring is often still too cold to wear open footwear, so make sure that you bring some closed footwear and have socks.

If you are visiting in spring, make sure to bring the correct fine-dust mask . My recommended dust mask is the reusable Cambridge Mask .

Popular Spring Activities

Spring brings life to Korea, and especially to Seoul. If you want to experience the many fantastic gardens that Seoul has to offer then spring is the time to visit. The cherry blossom season begins in mid-march and ends in mid-April. Seoul is usually towards the end of the season due to being located further north.

Spring is also a fantastic time to take day trips outside of Seoul. If you enjoy hiking, then you are in luck! There are many fantastic hikes within a few hours of Seoul – and even a few within the city!

There are a lot of festivals in spring and most of them are related to the cherry blossoms. Since they are the main attraction of the season, you will find no lack of tours that will take you to stunning locations around the city.

Why Should You Visit Seoul in Spring?

Spring is the best season to visit Seoul if you want to experience the outdoor spaces around the city. The country will begin to bloom and the cherry blossom season begins.

Spring is the best season if you like hiking and want to experience some of the mountains around Korea.

Summer is a great time to get out of Seoul and visit Hajodae !

Summer in Seoul can be HOT. It’s a fantastic time to visit, but make sure that you pack some cool clothes and your swimsuit!

Summer in Seoul begins in June and continues throughout July and August. The peak is usually found in late July and early August before temperatures begin to drop again in September.

Temperature: Temperatures in June will begin to reach the ‘30s with lows in the high-teens. For many people, June is the ideal summer month. In July, temperatures will begin to reach the mid-‘30s with lows in the low twenties. Finally, in August, temperatures will often be in the mid-’30s with some days reaching as high as 40 degrees. Lows will be in the mid-twenties.

Throughout July is the Korean rainy season. While the temperatures are at their peak at this time, so is the rain. As such, it is vital to remember a raincoat and to take an umbrella with you when you go out.

This also means that July is very humid. If you are planning to visit in July or August make sure to bring light clothes that allow air to pass through to keep you cool.

What to Wear in Seoul Summer

If you are planning to visit Seoul in the summer then make sure to pack cool clothes! Any clothes that allow air to pass through are ideal as you will sweat lots.

Open footwear is ideal in summer as having the most ventilation possible is needed.

If you are visiting in July, then make sure to bring a jacket that can protect you from the rain. Light jackets like these are ideal – for men . For women .

If you plan to visit beaches or waterparks then make sure to also bring swimwear and any other equipment you might need for swimming.

Korea is a conservative country and wearing revealing clothing was generally something that was better avoided. However, this is gradually changing and these days clothing is becoming less conservative. With that being said, it’s something to keep in mind.

The same goes for swimwear. Many people advise against wearing just a bikini. However, when visiting Surfyy Beach and Boryeong this year bikinis were very common amongst the swimmers. As such, this is slowly becoming less of an issue and if you wear a bikini in Korea today, you will most likely be fine.

Finally, make sure to bring an insulated water bottle . These bottles are cheap and will help you keep your water cool no matter how warm it is outside.

Popular Summer Activities

The Boryeong Mud Festival is one of the summer’s many fantastic events!

With the summer hitting Seoul, it is the best time to get out and see the beaches around the city. A short two-hour bus ride will take you to some of the most pristine and fun beaches on the peninsula.

Not only this but escaping from the city means that the temperatures will be a few degrees lower.

Hajodae Beach and Sokcho are both fantastic beaches that are located close to Seoul and are very clean and fun.

Summer is also a great time to do indoor activities around the city. You will often find yourself wanting to browse stores just to get out of the heat! As such, this makes summer in Seoul a great time to explore the inside areas of the city.

From DDP to museums and art galleries, to exploring the cafe culture of Seoul. Even if you stay indoors, there is a lot to do!

Summer also has some great festivals related to keeping cool in the heat. The Boryeong Mud Festival is a very popular festival that takes place a few hours south of Seoul. The Sinchon Water Gun Festival is an event that takes place within Seoul and will help you keep cool!

Another popular Korean summer activity is to visit waterparks located near Seoul. These waterparks are essentially theme parks that are full of activities to keep you cool. Ocean World and Caribbean Bay are the two most popular (and closest to Seoul).

Why Should You Visit Seoul in Summer?

Summer in Seoul is very hot and humid, and this makes it a great time to get out of the city and to explore the nearby beaches and coastal areas.

If you want to experience the coastal areas of Korea and the many festivals, then summer is the best time to visit.

Along with spring, fall is also a very popular time to visit Seoul. Fall lasts from September to November and begins quite warm before the temperature begins to drop.

Temperature: September sees highs around 30 degrees and lows around 20. October’s temperature begins to drop and 20 becomes the average high and 10 the average low. Finally, in November the highs drop to 10-15 degrees and the lows will occasionally drop below 0.

If you are visiting in fall then I would recommend October. October is a beautiful month as you can see the fall foliage in Seoul. I would put October and April as the best months to visit South Korea and Seoul.

There are a lot of different parks in Seoul and they are stunning in fall. World Cup Stadium , in particular, becomes a fantastic place to visit in fall.

What to Wear in Seoul Fall

Earlier fall (September) is still quite warm and you can easily get away with bringing the same clothes that are needed in spring.

This means a light jacket and sweater, closed in shoes and also a set of long pants (or two). But also remember that September can be quite warm, so it’s also worth bringing some summer clothes.

In the second half of fall, you will want to bring warmer clothes. Make sure to bring some thermal underclothes as well as a warm hat, and a scarf.

If you bring a few thermal underclothes then you shouldn’t need a heavy jacket in fall.

Popular Fall Activities

Similar to spring, many of the fall activities in Seoul are related to nature. Since the indoor activities are unaffected by the weather, I would recommend visiting in the season that has the outdoor activities that you want to witness.

Seoul and the area around the city have a multitude of stunning places to view fall foliage .

Fall is also one of the best times to experience Korean culture and participate in a temple stay. Not only this, but it’s also one of the best times to explore the palaces in Seoul and take Hanbok photos.

Fall in Korea is also the time of the Cheonggycheon Lantern Festival. Cheonggyecheon itself is a place that should be visited, and the festival makes it even more beautiful!

There are also a lot of fall festivals around the peninsula .

Why Should You Visit Seoul in Fall?

If you love fall foliage then Seoul is a fantastic place to visit during the fall. There are many stunning gardens and parks which become even more beautiful in this season.

Visiting in fall is also a great time to visit to avoid the extreme hot and cold temperatures of winter and summer.

Finally, we come to winter. Winter in Seoul can become very cold and dry. With that being said, some unique activities make winter an attractive time to visit!

Many people visit Seoul expecting to see snow. While snow can be seen sometimes, snowfall in Seoul is quite rare and usually only happens two or three times every winter. If seeing snow is your main intention, you are better off leaving the city.

Winter in Seoul begins in December and ends in February. Typically late January and early February are the coldest months.

Temperature: In December, high temperatures average about 7 degrees. Lows will fall to the low minuses (0 to -5). In January, high temperatures will drop to 0 degrees and lows will fall even further to -10. February has very similar temperatures to January, except that the second half of the month will begin to warm again.

Something else to note is that Christmas in Korea is a couples day, rather than a family day. You will find that most stores and attractions remain open (it’s not a public holiday in Korea). If you do visit around Christmas, expect to see a lot of couples.

What to Wear in Seoul Winter

The Seoul Winter can be very cold and as such, it is important to pack warm clothes.

If you are visiting Seoul in the winter make sure to bring a heavy jacket (such as a ski jacket), as well as some heavy sweaters and warm underclothes.

You will also be wanting to bring warm gloves, socks, and warm headwear. If possible, also try and bring warm shoes that are waterproof. While this isn’t essential, it will be far more pleasant without wet feet!

An insulated water bottle is also great in winter. These bottles are cheap and will help you keep your drink warm no matter how cold it is outside.

Popular Winter Activities

Winter in Seoul has a few unique activities with sledging and ice-skating activities popping up over the city. Skiing is also very popular, and a few venues can be found a few hours outside of the city.

Many visitors love to experience warming Korean cuisine in winter, and this is also one of my favourite activities. From street vendors to restaurants, there is a lot of food to eat!

Everland (a theme park near Seoul) has ice skating and sledging in winter and attracts a lot of people. If you are more interested in skiing, then Vivaldi Park has you covered.

Due to the weather, winter is also a great time to explore the inside areas of Seoul. This means museums, shopping, and even experiencing the cafe culture of Seoul !

Why Should You Visit Seoul in Winter?

Most people tend to avoid visiting in the Korean winter. However, there are still a few aspects that make it appealing.

If you enjoy winter sports or plan to spend most of your time inside then winter is ideal.

Winter also provides a unique view of many of the Seoul attractions. Visiting the palaces is a completely different feeling in winter. Hiking is also fantastic!

When Is the Best Season To Visit Seoul?

If you just want the quick answer, here it is: Seoul is fantastic at all times of the year. However, April and October are the best months to visit. More broadly, fall and spring are the two most popular times to visit Seoul and for good reason.

Unless you have a particular reason for wanting to visit in summer or winter, I would stick to this general advice.

SEOUL AT A GLANCE

Seoul is the capital of South Korea (Republic of Korea) and its biggest city. The estimated population within its city limits is 10.29 million people, but factor in its surrounding areas and that number jumps to 25.6 million , making it the second largest metropolitan area in the world.

With a workforce that large driving its economy, it’s no wonder Seoul is now the 4th most economically powerful city , behind only Tokyo, New York City, and Los Angeles (as measured by GDP).

South Korea has been making headlines in recent years in the tech, automotive, and entertainment sectors. Korean brands like Samsung and Hyundai are globally recognized brands.

People worldwide watch K-dramas and listen to K-pop. Myeongdong has become a hotbed for cosmetics and nearly everyone I know loves Korean food! Needless to say, South Korea is booming, and at the center of all that excitement, is Seoul.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SEOUL

Like Japan, South Korea has four distinct seasons — Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. The most popular times to visit Seoul are during the spring (March-May) and autumn (Mid-September – Early November) months when the weather is ideal and the landscape is at its most striking.

Both seasons are characterized by a dramatic change in color – Spring for its cherry blossom pinks and whites, and Autumn for its fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. Here’s what you can expect during every season.

MAR-MAY: Spring is one of the best times to visit Seoul. The weather is ideal and the city erupts with flowers. If you want to catch the cherry blossoms, then you should plan on being in Seoul around the second week of April (around April 9-10). That will give you the best chance to see the cherry blossoms. With that said, keep in mind that the blossoms are largely dependent on the weather so it’s still no guarantee they’ll be blooming then, which is why I think it’s a good idea to go around that time or a little earlier. If they aren’t blooming yet in Seoul, then you’ll have the option of taking a day trip to Jinhae , home of Korea’s biggest cherry blossom festival.

JUN-AUG: Summer isn’t an ideal time to visit Seoul. It’s hot, it’s humid, it rains a lot, and prices are at their highest with summertime being the peak of domestic tourism. Avoid these months if you can.

SEPT-NOV: Unless you’re chasing after the cherry blossoms, then the fall is arguably the best time to visit Seoul. Like spring, the weather is ideal and the foliage is at its most striking. Shoot for late October or early November if you can.

DEC-FEB: If you want to go skiing, snowboarding, or just experience snow, then winter is obviously the time to go. However, winter in Korea is freezing. We went in early November and we were surprised by how cold it already was. If you can stand the cold, then there are several ski resorts you can visit from Seoul.

TRAVELING TO SEOUL

There are many different ways you can travel to Seoul depending on where you are. You can check Bookaway or use the widget below to find route options available to you.

Almost all international flights land at Incheon International Airport. There are several ways to get to downtown Seoul from Incheon. You can refer to this website for more information on airport transfers.

BY AIRPORT EXPRESS (AREX): This is the fastest way to get to the city from the airport. It runs like clockwork and it’ll get you into Seoul Station in exactly 43 minutes. The trains are comfortable with free wifi onboard. You can purchase tickets at the gate (KRW 9,500) but you can get a discount if you get them in advance through Klook .

BY ALL-STOP TRAIN: This is the second-fastest way to get into Seoul from Incheon. It’ll get you to Seoul Station in about 58 minutes and costs around half the price of the AREX (KRW 4,150-4,750). Trains run from 5:23AM till 11:40PM. This is the train we usually take.

BY BUS: A one-way bus ticket costs KRW 5,000-15,000 and takes longer than the subway (around 80 minutes), so I suggest taking it only if you’re arriving at Incheon during off hours. Late night airport buses to Seoul Station run from 12MN-4:40AM, while buses to Gangnam Express Bus Terminal operate from 11:40PM-4:20AM. Detailed inquiries on bus routes and bus stops can be made at the Airport Information Desk on the 1st floor. Click on the link for more information on late night airport buses .

BY TAXI: Going by taxi is convenient but also expensive. A taxi will get you into the city in about an hour and will cost you anywhere between KRW 65,000-90,000.

BY PRIVATE TRANSFER: This is the best and most convenient option but also more expensive. Click on the links to book private airport transfers through Klook or Get Your Guide .

WHERE TO EXCHANGE CURRENCY

The unit of currency in Seoul is the Korean Won (KRW) .

Myeongdong is the best place to exchange your currency. There are plenty of money changers in the area and they’re known to give the best rates in the city. We scoped out a few other areas and the rates were never as good.

I suggest changing a small amount at the airport, no more than USD 100, just to get you into the city. You can then change the rest in Myeongdong.

A better option these days is to withdraw KRW from an ATM. The rates are competitive, sometimes even better. Just be sure to let your bank know that you’ll be using your ATM card abroad so you don’t run into any problems. In my experience, my ATM card works in some machines but not in others. I didn’t have any problems using it in Seoul.

TIP: Some ATM machines may ask you if you’d like to proceed “with or without conversion”. Always choose WITHOUT conversion. Proceeding “with conversion” allows the foreign bank operating the ATM to perform the conversion at rates favorable to them. According to this article , the difference in rates can be as high as 10%.

BEST AREAS TO STAY IN SEOUL

Based on our own experiences and what I’ve read online, Myeongdong, Insadong, Hongdae, and Itaewon are the best places to stay in Seoul. They offer different things so it all depends on what you want.

Myeongdong is ideal for shopping, Insadong for culture and the arts. Hongdae is young and hip while Itaewon is Seoul’s international district. We’ve visited all four areas but we’ve only stayed in Myeongdong and Hongdae. Personally, we prefer Hongdae.

I’ll go through each area in more detail below but you can search for hotels in Seoul on Booking.com and Agoda .

To make it easier, I’ve created the color-coded map below so you can see where all these recommended areas are. Click on the link for a live version of the map. (Please note that marked areas are approximations only)

RED – Myeongdong ORANGE – Hongdae PURPLE – Insadong AQUA – Itaewon

If you’re planning on doing a lot of shopping in Seoul, then Myeongdong is definitely where you need to stay. It’s a hyper shopping district filled with big name brands and boutique shops, as well as many restaurants, cafes, and street food stalls. If you like Korean cosmetics, then there’s a good chance you’re never leaving this place.

The place we stayed at doesn’t seem to be available anymore but you can search through Booking.com and Agoda for hotels in Myeongdong. Check out some of the top-rated hotels in the area:

We haven’t stayed in Insadong but we’ve spent many days exploring its wealth of traditional shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and teahouses. It’s also walking distance to several key attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Bukchon Hanok Village.

We aren’t into shopping so we preferred staying in Hongdae. It refers to the area around Hongik University. It’s a fun and youthful area with an easygoing college town vibe. This was our favorite neighborhood in the city so we’ll probably stay here on every return trip to Seoul.

Bingo House is a small 5-room guesthouse just a short walk from Exit 6 of Hongik University Station. There’s a 7-Eleven and a GS25 convenience store nearby, as well as a few restaurants and cafes. There’s a common area with free water and kitchen supplies but no breakfast. You can book a room here through Agoda .

If you like Hongdae but don’t think Bingo House is the right place for you, then you can check these sites for alternate listings: Booking.com | Agoda . Here are a few of the top-rated hotels in Hongdae:

• Luxury: RYSE, Autograph Collection Marriott
• Midrange: Daol Guesthouse
• Budget: High Street Guest House

Among these four areas, Itaewon is the place we’re least familiar with. It’s one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods boasting plenty of shops and international restaurants. It has a bustling nightlife as well which is one of the reasons why it’s a popular hotspot among expats. You can search through Booking.com and Agoda for accommodation listings in Itaewon. Here are a few top-rated hotels in the area:

• Luxury: Hamilton Hotel
• Midrange: Imperial Palace Boutique Hotel
• Budget: G Guesthouse Itaewon In Seoul

PLACES TO VISIT IN SEOUL

1. the five grand palaces.

There are five Joseon Royal Palaces in Seoul – Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Gyeonghuigung, and Deoksugung. We visited only the first two but you can easily visit all five if you like.

Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung are the biggest and arguably the most beautiful of the five. Gyeongbokgung was the primary palace and one of just two (the other being Deoksugung) where you can watch the changing of the Royal Guard. Equally impressive is Changdeokgung which is a UNESCO Heritage Site and home to the Huwon or “Secret Garden”.

If you plan on visiting multiple palaces on your own, then you may want to invest in an Integrated Palace Ticket .

2. Bukchon Hanok Village

As ultramodern a metropolis as Seoul is, it’s nice to find a place like this right in the middle of the city. Bukchon Hanok Village is an atmospheric labyrinth of narrow alleyways and traditional Korean houses called hanoks.

Exploring its network of streets will take you back in time and give you a glimpse of what Seoul was like 600 years ago. Like the royal palaces, it’s one of the best places in Seoul to rent a hanbok and level up your Instagram game.

3. N Seoul Tower

When it comes to great views, this place towers above the competition. Standing 480 meters (1,575 ft) above sea level, N Seoul Tower’s observation deck is the best place to get bird’s eye views of the city.

N Seoul Tower is located on Mt. Namsan and accessible via road or cable car, though most tourists will opt for the latter. You can purchase tickets to the observatory at the gate.

4. Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

This place is incredible. If you like design, any kind of design, then you need to put Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) on your itinerary. It’s like a museum, design supermarket, and space ship all rolled into one.

DDP was designed by the late Zaha Hadid, the renowned architect who created the 2012 Olympic aquatic centre in London and the Guangzhou Opera House in China.

I suggest devoting several hours to this place if you can. Be sure to come back at night as well when the building really comes to life. Check out my article on Dongdaemun Design Plaza for more pictures and information.

5. Jogyesa Temple

Jogyesa Temple is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Korea. It’s the head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and serves as the main venue for many Buddhist events, rituals, lectures, and ceremonies.

6. COEX Mall Library

COEX Mall in the Gangnam district has become Insta-famous in recent years, all because of this beautiful library located in the middle of the mall.

Starfield Library is an open-air public library that features hundreds of books and magazines. It’s stunning architectural shelf of books has made it into one of the most popular picture-taking spots in Seoul.

THINGS TO DO IN SEOUL

1. dress up in a hanbok.

If you’re a fan of Korean period dramas or just the culture in general, then you’ll probably want a selfie wearing a hanbok. It’s the traditional Korean form of dress worn by both men and women during festivals and celebrations.

Bukchon Hanok Village and any of the five royal palaces make for great photo backdrops. You’ll find a few hanbok rental shops around those areas but you can also rent one in advance through Klook .

2. Visit a Traditional Korean Market

We love visiting markets on trips because they’re often the best places to find great street food in any city. Seoul is no exception with its many interesting markets like Noryangjin Fish Market, Gwangjang Market (pictured below), and Nandaemun Market. Check them out if you’re looking for cheap and authentic street food in Seoul.

3. Explore Seoul’s Neighborhoods

Seoul is a massive city with many interesting neighborhoods. Four of its most popular include Insadong, Myeongdong, Hongdae, and Itaewon, each with its own distinct personality.

Insadong is known for its traditional arts and crafts, Myeongdong for its brand names and cosmetics, Hongdae for its trendy college town atmosphere, and Itaeown for its international vibe. All have terrific food.

4. Take a Stroll Along Cheonggyecheon Stream

Cheonggyecheon Stream is an 11 km stream that runs through the heart of downtown Seoul. It passes underneath 22 bridges and through a number of city landmarks before opening up into the Han River. It’s a popular picture-taking spot in Seoul and a great place to cool off in the summer.

You can walk along the stream on your own, but if you’d like to learn more about it and the places you’ll be passing along the way, then you may be interested in joining this free walking tour .

5. Go on a K-pop/Kdrama Tour

As described, many people have been turned on to South Korea because of the popularity of Korean pop music and its film and television industry. In fact, we know of a few diehard fans who routinely fly to Seoul just to attend music concerts!

If you have a fascination for Korean pop culture, then you may be interested in booking a K-Pop tour or taking a K-Pop dance class . Aspiring singers can even get a K-Pop recording studio experience !

6. Watch the Cookin’ Nanta Show

If you’d like to watch a show or performance in Seoul, then the Cookin’ Nanta Show is one to consider. It’s entertaining and funny and reminds me of a Korean version of Stomp, but with food.

There are two Nanta theaters – one in Myeongdong and another in Hongdae. You can purchase tickets at the gate but you can sometimes get a discount if you buy them in advance through Klook .

7. Take a Cooking Class

We haven’t done this in Korea but taking a cooking class is something we try to do on every trip. It’s a fun, hands-on way of getting to know the local cuisine.

If you’re interested in taking a cooking class in Seoul, then I suggest searching for one on Cookly . Cookly is an online booking platform that offers cooking classes in many cities around the world, including Seoul.

DAY TOURS FROM SEOUL

If you’re staying long enough in Seoul, then you may want to explore beyond the city and go on a day trip. Listed below are four of the most popular but you can check our article on 18 of the best day trips from Seoul for more suggestions.

1. Nami Island

We skipped out on Nami Island on our first trip to Korea because we thought it could only be appreciated by fans of the television drama Winter Sonata. We were wrong.

Nami Island is achingly beautiful and a must-visit for anyone traveling to Seoul. We went in winter when there was a thin sheet of fresh powder blanketing the island. It was beautiful, though perhaps not as magical as the fall when the leaves turn fiery shades of red, orange, and yellow.

You can visit Nami Island on your own but it may be easiest to go on a guided tour ( Klook | Get Your Guide ). You can refer to my article on Nami Island, Gangchon Rail Park, and Petite France for more pictures and information.

This was one of the most interesting tours I’ve ever been on. DMZ stands for Demilitarized Zone and refers to the 4 km wide buffer zone that divides North and South Korea.

When I went, they were still offering visits to the JSA or Joint Security Area. Nicknamed “the most dangerous place in Korea”, it’s the only portion of the DMZ where North and South Korean soldiers can stand face to face. Check out my article on the JSA and DMZ tour for more pictures and information.

I checked and the JSA tour doesn’t seem to be available anymore, perhaps due to the cooling relations between north and south, but you can still book a DMZ tour on Klook or Get Your Guide . It isn’t as intense as the JSA tour but it’s still worth doing, especially if you have an interest in Korean history.

3. Everland Resort

Many tourists, especially those traveling to Seoul with young children, will probably want to visit one (or both) of South Korea’s biggest theme parks – Everland and Lotte World.

Lotte World is located in central Seoul while Everland is about an hour away. We visited Everland and it made for a fun day trip from Seoul. You can check out my article on Everland Resort for more pictures and information.

4. Hwaseong Fortress

Hwaseong Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about an hour south of Seoul by metro. It’s name means “Brilliant Castle” and it was built in 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty to house and honor the remains of his father, Prince Sado.

Hwaseong Fortress offers terrific views of Suwon and is a great place to do some hiking, perhaps even trying your hand in traditional Korean archery. Check out my article on Hwaseong Fortress for more pictures and information.

KOREAN FOOD GUIDES

There is so much good food to be had in Seoul. From Korean delicacies like ganjang gejang, galbi, and gomtang to popular street food staples like tteokbokki and gyeranppang, Seoul will have you counting down the minutes to your next meal.

WHERE TO EAT IN SEOUL

1. yeontabal bbq restaurant.

Gogigui or Korean BBQ is one of our favorite things about Korean food. Marinated meats like bulgogi and galbi barbecued over a charcoal grill are absolutely delicious.

These grilled king beef ribs at Yeontabal were some of the best we’ve ever had. Smokey, savory-sweet, and super tender, they were to die for, especially when eaten with steamed white rice and kimchi.

Keep in mind that meat is typically expensive in Korea, so expect Korean BBQ to be one of your more expensive meals. You can get a small discount at Yeontabal if you purchase a voucher through Klook .

2. Woo Lae Oak

I’ve been wanting to try naengmyeon (buckwheat noodles served in cold broth) ever since I saw a documentary about North Korea. It’s originally a North Korean delicacy that became popular throughout the peninsula after the Korean War.

I searched for the best places to try naengmyeon and Woo Lae Oak, one of Seoul’s oldest restaurants, often came up. They’re a Korean BBQ restaurant that’s equally famous for their naengmyeon.

3. Myeongdong Kyoja

Myeongdong Kyoja is widely regarded as having the best kalguksu in the city. Kalguksu is a noodle dish consisting of handmade, knife-cut wheat flour noodles served in a large bowl with broth and other ingredients.

Myeongdong Kyoja has been in business for over 50 years and is located in the heart of Myeongdong. It’s a great place to have lunch or dinner when shopping in the area.

4. Manjok Ohyang Jokbal

I asked my Korean sister-in-law (who’s a former chef from Seoul) which dishes we should try, and jokbal was one of the things she recommended. Jokbal is a delicious dish of the most tender pig’s trotters cooked in soy sauce and spices.

I did a google search for “best jokbal in seoul” and Manjok Ohyang Jokbal was frequently cited. They’re a TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice awardee with a stellar 4.5 star rating. Serious yum.

We bought a voucher for this medium portion of the spiced pig’s trotters bossam set menu from Klook. It’s good for 2-3 people and comes with jokbal, bossam (pork belly boiled in spices), dumpling soup, and a slew of sides.

5. Wonjo Masan Halmae Agujjim

We skipped out on ganjang gejang on our first visit to Korea so I made sure to try it on our next trip.

Ganjang gejang is raw crab marinated in soy sauce. Considered by many to be the ultimate Korean dish, I waited over two years to try it and the experience blew me away. It’s so good and unlike anything we’ve ever tried.

If you like crab, then you have to try this dish. Like Korean bbq, ganjang gejang is expensive so expect to pay at least KRW 30,000 per small crab.

We had it at Wonjo Masan Halmae Agujjim. It’s one of several restaurants in Ganjang Gejang Alley that specializes in this interesting and supremely delicious crab dish.

6. Myeongdong Food Street

As much as we love visiting restaurants, there’s something uniquely thrilling about eating street food. It’s like having a degustation experience right there on the street!

No first-time visitor’s trip to Seoul will be complete without eating street food in Myeongdong. With mouthwatering delicacies like grilled lobster tails, chicken and scallion skewers, and tteokbokki, Myeongdong is a Korean street food lover’s paradise.

The restaurants above were some of our favorites, but if seven isn’t enough to satisfy your appetite, then you can check out our article on 25 must-eat restaurants in Seoul .

It includes plenty of other restaurant recommendations like where to find the best gomtang (beef bone soup), the most authentic Jeonju bibimbap, and cheap but delicious Korean BBQ. It’ll even tell you where to find Seoul’s oldest restaurant, a 110+ year old institution specializing in seolnongtang or ox bone soup.

POINTS OF INTEREST IN SEOUL

HOW TO GET AROUND IN SEOUL

Seoul’s subway system is very efficient, so much so that you probably won’t need any other form of transportation when you’re there. We never took a taxi and the only times we ever got on a bus was to go to places outside of Seoul like Paju, Suwon, and Jinhae.

It can be a little confusing at first but as long as you remember your destination’s subway stop and the line number that it’s on, then you shouldn’t have any problems.

You sometimes have to walk far to transfer between lines so it’s important to know the line number of your stop. Otherwise, you won’t know which way to go to transfer lines. Whenever I include directions in our Seoul travel guides, I always try to indicate Line and Exit numbers.

It’s a good idea to invest in a T-money card. It’s a transportation card that eliminates the hassle of buying single journey tokens, plus it saves you KRW 100 per journey. It can be used to transfer between subway lines, buses, or from subway to bus and vice versa (within a transfer time limit) at no extra charge.

The card itself costs KRW 2,500 and it can be purchased at most convenience stores and subway stations. You can top it up with any amount at recharge stations found at every subway stop. If there’s any amount left over at the end of your trip, then you can have it refunded at a convenience store or refund station (minus a KRW 500 service charge).

Another option is to get a Korea Tour Card which is a variation of the T-money card. It has the same benefits as the T-money card, plus it gives you small discounts at some tourist spots, shopping centers, restaurants, and theaters.

We usually navigate with Google Maps but it doesn’t work as well in Seoul. It has something to do with street names being changed recently (or something like that) so it’s best to navigate with the NAVER Map instead ( iOS | Android ).

HOW MANY DAYS TO STAY / SEOUL ITINERARY

Seoul is a massive city with much to see. We don’t like to rush so we stayed over a week on each of our three trips to Korea. I think staying a week in Seoul is great, but if you’re pressed for time, then 5 full days will be enough for most first-time visitors to the city.

SEOUL TRAVEL TIPS

1. plan your trip with sygic travel.

2. Rent a Pocket Wifi Device

A constant wifi connection is a necessity these days, especially when you’re away on a trip. You’ll need it to translate, do research, use ride-sharing apps, and find your favorite K-drama filming locations. We never go anywhere now without renting a pocket wifi device first.

You can stay connected in Seoul by renting a pocket wifi device or buying a sim card. We always rent pocket wifi devices but sim cards are perfectly fine too. They’re even cheaper.

Regardless of your preference, you can rent a pocket wifi device or buy a sim card through Klook . If you’re in Asia, then be sure to go through the list as it may be cheaper to pick it up from your origin country.

3. Get an Integrated Palace Ticket

If you want to visit as many palaces as you can in Seoul, then you should definitely get an integrated palace ticket. Entrance to four major palaces — Changdeokgung (including Huwon), Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, Gyeongbokgung — plus Jongmyo Shrine will normally cost you a total of KRW 17,000 for adults. With the integrated palace ticket, you’ll have access to all five for just KRW 10,000 .

4. Get a Tourist Discount Pass

If you plan on visiting most of the attractions recommended in this Seoul travel guide, then I highly recommend getting a Discover Seoul Pass. It’s a tourist card that gives foreign visitors free admission to many of Seoul’s top tourist attractions. If you get a Discover Seoul Pass, then you won’t need to get an integrated palace ticket since free admission to all five historical attractions is already included.

Aside from free admission to tourist attractions, the Discover Seoul Pass gives you T-money function and discounts to various shopping and entertainment facilities in Seoul. You can get a 24, 48, or 72 hour Discover Seoul Pass on Klook .

Another tourist card you may want to check out is the Go City Pass . We used the Go City Explorer Pass in Barcelona and saved over 21% on admission and tour costs.

5. Check for Discount Passes

I love going through e-commerce sites to find travel deals. I’ve bought vouchers from several different websites but for Seoul, my favorites are Klook and Get Your Guide. They have the widest selection at the best prices.

If you’re looking for deals on tours, shows, theme parks, and airport transfers in Seoul, then be sure to check out Klook and Get Your Guide . Even if I don’t buy anything, I often find interesting activities that I may not think of myself so it’s always worth a look.

6. Get Travel Insurance

Whether or not to get travel insurance depends on where we’re going, how long we’re staying there, and most importantly, what we’ll be doing. If all we’re doing is visiting Hong Kong and feasting on street food for a few days, then we may not get it. But if we plan on doing more physical things, things that could get us hurt, then we’ll definitely get travel insurance.

7. Bring the Right Power Adapter

Electrical outlets in South Korea are round so plugs are typically Type C or Type F. Be sure to bring the right power adapters for your devices. Electrical voltage is 220/230V.

Spring and autumn are the two best seasons to visit Seoul and South Korea. If you want to make the most of the snow, head to ski resort towns around Pyeongchang or visit various winter festivals around the country such as the Seogwipo Penguin Festival on Jeju Island or Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival in Taebaek.  

Best for: hanging out in bathhouses and café hopping 

South Korea’s still well and truly in the middle of winter in February (although it’s technically the last month of the season) with temperatures at a chilly 4°C average (slightly warmer than previous months so there’s light at the end of the snow-covered tunnel). Weather conditions themselves aren’t too bad with clear, sunny mornings (albeit cold ones) that turn into cloudy afternoons, especially as the month goes on. 

Best for: flower festivals, bamboo forests and historical sightseeing 

Frozen landscapes are thawing out in South Korea in March with the first signs of spring right around the corner. While avid snow-seekers can still catch some of the fluffy white stuff at the beginning of the month, temperatures will increase as the month goes on with high averages around 11°C. Daylight hours are also getting longer with an average of 11 hours experienced per day, perfect for exploring historical sites in Gyeongju and wandering around the bamboo forests of Damyang.

Best for: hiking and the cherry blossom festival 

Spring is here in South Korea in April and so are the flowers! One of the most popular months to visit because of the cherry blossoms, April sees plenty of travellers so expect large crowds wherever you go and increased flight prices and accommodation. The mild weather experienced is also favourable for spending long periods of time outside with warmer days of 18°C scattered throughout the month.

To make the most of the nice weather after the long months of winter, hiking through South Korea’s national parks is a popular activity, especially with flowers in full bloom and relatively clear days to take in the magnificent scenery. But most people travel to South Korea in April for the famous Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival on the country’s south coast for a closer look at the beautiful flowers. 

Best for: tea plantation visits and wandering ancient palaces

May is a fantastic time to visit South Korea as the cherry blossom crowds have largely disappeared but the peak summer crowds haven’t yet arrived, so you won’t be faced with higher prices or low availability. Temperatures are also getting warmer with averages of 20°C but there’s an increased chance of rainfall, especially towards the end of the month.  While the nice weather conditions suit outdoor activities, air quality can be affected by dust storms and soil particles, so be mindful of any allergies you have that may be worsened by the smogginess in larger cities. If you want to stay inside, ancient palaces such as Changgyonggung and Gyeongbokgung. 

Best for: water-based activities and picnic lunches in city gardens

While June might be the start of summer in South Korea, it’s also the beginning of monsoon season with heavy rains and high humidity levels expected. For this reason, large crowds tend to steer clear of travelling during the month so the bigger cities and popular sites should be relatively quiet.

Temperatures can reach a warm 26°C during the month, but humidity also climbs to 70%, which can make it feel hotter than it is. To escape the often oppressive-feeling heat, many travellers flock to the country’s coastal areas in search of golden sand and clear waters. Beach going is a popular pastime in June as the beaches are less crowded than in the coming months and resort prices aren’t yet at their peak.

Best for: island hopping, swimming and beach lounging 

Summer is at its peak in July in South Korea but so are the humidity levels which sit at a sweltering 90%. So it makes sense that holiday-makers flock to destinations like Jeju Island in search of ways to cool off (read: lounging on the beach and going for a swim). But be sure to stake out a spot early in the morning before summer holiday crowds descend.

Temperatures rarely dip below 20°C in July, instead averaging around 27°C during the day so ensure you’re packing lots of lightweight, breathable clothing and sun-protective items such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. 

Best for: dolphin spotting and water sports 

August in South Korea starts off just as hot and humid as July, but weather conditions start to level out as the month draws on until temperatures sit at a more comfortable average of 20°C. But it’s still a popular month to leave the busy cities behind in favour of sandy shores and clear waters, so you can expect large crowds in beachside destinations. You might even spot a bottlenose dolphin or two if you’re heading to Jeju Island. 

Best for: exploring national parks and camping 

Say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn as hot and sticky temperatures give way to cooler conditions. The large crowds of summer have gone and with it, the consistent heavy rainfall (although a few showers here and there can still be expected). Temperatures average around 19°C, which is perfect for exploring the great outdoors, especially when the landscape starts to turn an array of reds, oranges and golden browns. 

Best for: appreciating the autumn scenery and Halloween celebrations 

It might not be as iconic as the cherry blossom season, but the autumn colours that descend upon South Korea in October deserve just as much love and appreciation. Whether it’s exploring a national park, a day trip to Nami Island or a walk through a lively city garden, there’s beautiful autumn foliage to be seen everywhere you go.

The weather’s very comfortable too with conditions staying dry and temperatures averaging a cool 18°C. While you can still do all of the normal ‘touristy’ things like visit the Demilitarised Zone and other historic areas, October sees a whole heap of festive Halloween celebrations including parades, haunted houses and parties. 

Best for: tasting traditional food and museum visits 

While it’s still technically autumn, the oranges, reds and browns of October aren’t as crisp and temperatures are getting colder as the season makes way for winter. If you’re keen to stay out of the 5°C weather, November is a good month for museum wanderings and tasting some of South Korea’s most traditional food – think ddukbokki, bibimbap and kimchi. 

Best for: holiday festivals and Christmas celebrations 

Forget Europe or North America’s east coast, South Korea is where you want to be when December 25th rolls around! Large cities like Seoul and Busan really go all out with their Christmas decorations – think lanterns, colourful fairy lights and festive displays – and there’s nothing like a white Christmas with temperatures of around 3°C and lots of snow predicted during the month.

And just when you think it couldn’t get any more magical, there are plenty of holiday activities to keep you occupied during your visit such as ice skating at the Seoul City Hall or watching the annual Christmas Tree Festival in Busan. You can also head to the slopes outside of the city to participate in various snow sports like skiing and snowboarding.

After living for a year in South Korea , we were lucky enough to experience all of the seasons and weather this country has to offer. And trust me, it varies a lot! The summers are hot and balmy and the winters dip far below freezing.

With the big variety in weather in South Korea, the good news is that you can plan your trip according to the things you want to see and do but the bad news is that you need to be prepared for the extreme weather and pack accordingly. Keep in mind that the farther north you are in the country, the more varied the seasons get, with the farther south having a hotter summer but a milder winter.

Let's dive into the best time to visit South Korea so you can plan your trip accordingly.

How to See All of the Seasons in South Korea

Want to extend that trip into a full long adventure like I did? Lucky for you, it can be pretty attainable to live for a year or longer in South Korea and soak up all 4 seasons. While many travelers get 3 months of visa-free enjoyment, if you want to stay longer, that'll most likely mean getting a job.

The most common job for foreigners to get here is teaching English or because their company transferred them to the country. Neither of those sound likely? Don't worry, getting a non-teaching job isn't the easiest but it's not impossible either.

But, if you want to take the path of least resistance, I recommend teaching. You need 5 main requirements to get hired here:

• Your passport must be from a native English speaking country
• You must have a Bachelor's degree in any subject
• You must have a "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" certificate or similar
• A clean background check from your country of residency
• Ability to pass a medical check

While different schools might ask for different things, these are the main requirements you'll be asked to get a job and a sponsored work visa as an English teacher.

Things to Know Before You Go

Now that you’re gearing up for your trip and planning the specifics of where and when you’ll go, there are a few things you don’t need to overlook. 

I know just how easy it is to look towards the big hike, bucket list city, or beach of my dreams and forget about all of the little things in between that’ll make your trip run as smoothly as possible. Be sure to take into consideration these few things before you go to make sure you get all the good bits of your trip without the stress. 

• Make sure you have travel insurance. A good travel insurance, like SafetyWing , will ensure you’re covered in case of emergencies. While you will have to pay upfront for your doctor or hospital costs, unless it’s for a pre-existing condition, you can file a claim and should be reimbursed. For any Americans reading this, fear not, healthcare in pretty much every other country is far more affordable than ours, even if you’re paying out of pocket. 
• Do your best to learn a few local phrases in their language. No, I’m not expecting you to be able to have a fluid conversation with locals at the bus stop if you’re just visiting their country for a week but knowing your numbers (for prices), how to order something (“I would like…”), and basic greetings really will take you a long way. Mondly is a great app for phrases and vocabulary. 
• Book any popular tours you want to do in advance. I’m really not a great planner and I’ve made this mistake more times than I can count. I plan a trip to a destination knowing that I want to do a sailboat trip or food tour and wait until the day before to book only to realize it’s not available the day I’m in town. Don’t make that mistake - if there is something you know you want to do - book your tour in advance.
• Same thing goes for rental cars. If you want to rent a car to cover more ground in a country, do it in advance. Prices will be more affordable and that way you’re guaranteed to have your wheels waiting for you. Although in South Korea, I'd recommend sticking with public transportation if possible.
• Last tip certainly isn’t mandatory but it is helpful. Before you start booking your flights, hotels, and tours, consider opening up a travel credit card. Thanks to our Capital One Venture card , my husband and I have gotten countless free flights just by gaining points on everyday expenses.

Spring in South Korea (March-May)

Spring in South Korea gets a lot of votes as the best time to visit but my personal favorite is still yet to come. Known often as cherry blossom season, I can see why so many people love visiting South Korea in the spring though. Do know that the most tourists visit South Korea in spring and summer.

The temperatures start to rise but a pretty chilly winter and the natural beauty throughout the country really starts to wake up, most notably the cherry blossoms. Parks all throughout the country become a spectacle of pinks, whites, and greens, creating a picturesque setting for outdoor activities.

The weather is typically comfortable for spending time outdoors sightseeing, hiking, and enjoying the various festivals that happen each spring. The most notable festivals are the cherry blossom festivals that happen all around the country.

Best Places to Visit in Spring in South Korea

• Seoul : Witness the breathtaking cherry blossoms at places like Yeouido Park, Namsan Park, and the Seoul Forest. Spring in Seoul also brings pleasant weather, making it ideal for exploring palaces, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace.
• Jinhae : Known for its stunning cherry blossoms, Jinhae hosts the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival, one of the largest cherry blossom festivals in Korea. When I lived in South Korea, I went to this festival and had a blast. We spent the weekend mesmerized by the beauty of the surroundings, eating, drinking, and biking.

Summer in South Korea (June-August)

Summer in South Korea is hot and humid, no matter where in the country you are. But, the warm weather tends to bring people outside, especially at night when the streets overflow with people at all hours in busy neighborhoods.

The hottest of these months are July and August so if you want to still enjoy warm weather but skip the most brutal of it, visiting in June could be the perfect compromise.

It's important to know that summer is also the rainy season in South Korea so you'll want to have some rainy day plans mixed in with your beach days. The monsoon season can mean really heavy downpours so it's best you're prepared for it, just in case.

For a unique cultural experience, consider visiting for the Boryeong Mud Festival. It's located on Daecheon Beach, just west of Seoul. It's usually held in July but the exact date varies from year to year. This internationally renowned festival features mud-based activities, including mud wrestling, mud sliding, and mud painting. It's a unique and lively event and something you certainly don't see everyday.

Best Places to Visit in Summer in South Korea

• Busan : Busan is the 2nd largest city in South Korea and one of the best places to live. The city is on the southern coast and the perfect spot for an easy beach getaway. Head to the popular Haeundae Beach or Gwangalli Beach for a seaside escape. Explore the bustling Jagalchi Fish Market and visit Beomeosa Temple for a tranquil retreat.
• Jeju Island : Pop over to the "Hawaii of South Korea" and enjoy the cool sea breeze, relax on pristine beaches, and explore unique natural wonders like Manjanggul Cave and Hallasan National Park. You can fly here or take a ferry from Busan.

Fall in South Korea (September-November)

Call me basic but I'm a sucker for fall weather. I've said it before and I'll say it again, September and October are always my favorite traveling months. And in South Korea, I've got to say it's the same. Unless you're here to see the cherry blossoms or enjoy winter sports, fall is really hard to beat.

The colors here during fall are 10/10. Even if you're just planning a trip to Seoul, the city is surrounded by mountains, parks, and plenty of nature so you'll get to see the spectacle of the vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and golden hues. It doesn't tend to rain here too much in the autumn months so it's a great time to get outside and really see the country without the spring and summer crowds.

The temperatures start to drop and I would definitely describe it as "chilly" but it's that nice kind of brisk that with a jacket and a sweater you'll be more than comfortable.

In November, you can experience the Seoul Lantern Festival, where lanterns of various shapes and sizes illuminate Cheonggyecheon Stream. It makes for a fun night out with friends but know that come nighttime in November, you'll want more than just a sweater to be comfortable.

Best Places to Visit in Fall in South Korea

• Naejangsan National Park : Famous for its vibrant autumn foliage, Naejangsan offers picturesque hiking trails and stunning landscapes.
• Jeonju : Not too far from the national park listed above, Jeonju is South Korea's home of exceptional cuisine. What a better way to end a few days of hiking than to follow them up with a few days of cozy eating?

Winter in South Korea (December-February)

Ok, I'll be honest here: winter in South Korea is pretty brutal. I'm a bit of a baby in the cold and was forced to walk to and from work each day regardless of the weather so my opinion is a little skewed but here's the thing, I would only visit South Korea in the winter if you're here for winter sports. The temperature, especially in Seoul and other northern cities, typically drops below freezing.

But, the season does offer a unique set of experiences. Winter sports enthusiasts can head to ski resorts like Yongpyong or Alpensia, which hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Winter is also an excellent time to indulge in Korean cuisine known for its hearty and warming dishes, such as hot pot stews and street food snacks. While some outdoor activities may be limited, the festive atmosphere, cultural events, and the chance to witness a serene snowy landscape make winter an enchanting time to visit South Korea - if you're a lover of the cold unlike me!

South Korea has four distinct seasons:

Spring (March to May): Being one of the best times to visit South Korea, the average temperature ranges from 8–16°C (46–61°F) , providing pleasant weather to enjoy the cherry blossoms and outdoor activities.

Summer (June to August): The sweltering conditions may make it uncomfortable for you to explore sightseeing spots during summer in South Korea. The average daily high during this season is 30°C (86°F) and there is frequent rainfall due to the rainy season. June is a better time to travel compared to July and August as it's cooler and has fewer crowds, with an average daily temperature range of 18–27°C (64–81°F).

Autumn (September to November): This is another one of the best times to visit South Korea. Cooler temperatures and decreased rainfall are the main features of this season. The average night-day temperature range is from 10 to 18°C (50–64°F). Many locals choose to go hiking during fall.

Winter (December to February): It is the coldest and driest time of the year, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 5°C (37–41°F) on a typical day. We don't usually advise visiting South Korea during this period because it is too cold for comfort. However, if you are going for skiing or snowboarding activities, it's a different story. The Worst Times to Visit South Korea

The summer months (July to August) in South Korea are the worst time to visit. High temperatures usually reach up 35°C (95°F) on the hottest days, and two-thirds of the annual rainfall occurs during this season, making heavy rainfall common. Therefore, you're recommended to avoid this period if you have a flexible schedule.

The second worst time to visit South Korea is in winter , from December to February. January is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures in Seoul sometimes dropping below -10°C (14°F) and occasionally falling below -15°C (5°F).

Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds

Late April to May has mild weather in South Korea , with average daily temperatures ranging from 13 to 23°C (55–73°F), and there are more sunny days before the rainy season arrives. The crowds of people viewing the cherry blossoms have disappeared and the summer vacation has not yet started, making it a perfect time to do outdoor activities and go sightseeing.

June is the start of summer and the rainy season in South Korea. The night-day temperature range is about 18–27°C (64–81°F) and rainfall typically consists of steady drizzles, but it doesn't rain every day.

September marks the tail end of the summer crowds and the rainy season. The weather tends to be drier and cooler, with an average daily temperature range of 17–26°C (63–79°F). More crowds arrive in October and November for the colorful autumn scenery. South Korea usually has a 3-day holiday in September for the important Chuseok (Mid-Autumn) festival and some stores may close or open late. The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea

Winter (December to February) is the cheapest time to visit South Korea, except during Christmas and New Year (usually from December 23rd to January 5th). Not only could you benefit from lower hotel prices and better deals on international flights, but also you would see fewer crowds. However, be prepared for the chilly weather!

Festivals and events: Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in South Korea. During this time, you could immerse yourself in Korean culture at a temple fair to experience traditional Korean performances, sample local cuisines, and pray for the coming year.

If you’re planning to visit Korea during the summer, be prepared to experience some wet and wild festivals, beaches to cool off, and more. From music festivals to traditional celebrations, there is plenty to make you forgot how hot it is… maybe.

Although it can be hot and sticky, there are plenty of ways to beat the heat and enjoy all that this amazing country has to offer. In this guide, we’ll explore the top festivals, activities, and tips to help you make the most of your summer adventure in Korea.

What’s the weather like in the summer in Korea?

Summer in Korea can be pretty hot and humid and on top of that it is the rainy season, or jangma (장마). Don’t let that sway you from coming though. Korea doesn’t tend to experience the monsoon rains quite as bad as some other countries in Asia.

Some years, they have been horrible and have even flooded the Han River parks but other years, they’ve only lasted a couple of weeks and just make everything that much greener and lush. There are still plenty of ways to enjoy Korea whether it’s raining or shining or something in between.

Let’s break it down by month to know what to expect when you visit Korea in the summer.

June is the start of summer in South Korea, and temperatures begin to rise to an average of 23°C to 27°C (73°F to 81°F). While the weather is warm, it can also be quite humid. June usually features beautiful sunny days and clear skies making it an ideal time to explore the country and enjoy outdoor activities before the rainy season sets in. Pack your sunscreen and get ready to soak up some sun if you’re visiting in June.

July is the height of summer in South Korea, and temperatures continue to rise with an average high of 29°C to 30°C (84°F to 86°F). While the weather can be hot and humid, there are plenty of ways to stay cool and enjoy the summer season. This is the month to visit the numerous beaches around Korea or to head into the mountains to cool off in the streams and rivers. Plan to be out and about, but also plan some indoor spots to cool off if you’re visiting in July.

August is one of the hottest and most humid months in South Korea, with temperatures averaging around 28°C to 31°C (82°F to 88°F). While the weather can be intense, you will still see people out and about and exploring from the city to the coasts. August might be the month that I recommend the least to visitors, but if that’s when you have vacation, you can still find plenty to see and do.

Dust can be an issue throughout the summer months. Be aware of the fine dust levels when you visit as yellow dust and fine dust can sweep across the country and can be unhealthy and cause various issues especially for the young, elderly, and those with asthma. Typhoons usually head to Korea from the south and can hit during the months of July through September. Generally, by the time the rains and wind get to Seoul, it’s not that strong. If you’ll be on Jeju Island or Busan, you’ll want to watch the weather channels vigilantly to know if any storms are headed this way.

Typhoon storms can bring high winds, flash floods and landslides. Just be aware of the weather while you’re traveling and if a typhoon is headed to Korea, stay indoors.

What to wear? What to wear? What should I wear in the summer in Korea? Summer is hot and humid. If you’re prone to sweating, wear colors that won’t show as much. • Swimsuit <– Do note that Koreans don’t tend to wear bikinis but opt for long sleeve rash guards and shorts so if you’re wearing something skimpy, you will be stared at.
• Sunglasses/Hats
• Mosquito Repellent / Sun Cream
• Electric Handheld Fan  <– These have gotten wildly popular in Korea the past few summers. Want to stay cooler outside? Take around your own handheld fan.
• Sunbrella  <– If you’ve never heard of it, check it out. The sun can be fierce. Don’t get caught standing out in the sun for hours without shade.
• Umbrella/Poncho <– Should you end up here when the monsoons hit, you’ll want to be prepared.

Be aware of public holidays in Korea that may impact your trip. Many businesses and attractions may have different hours or are closed on these days, so it’s helpful to plan accordingly.

Here are the major public holidays to be aware during the summer in Korea:

• June 6th – Memorial Day
• July 17th – Constitution Day
• August 15th – Liberation Day

Memorial Day and Liberation Day are particularly significant, with many events and ceremonies taking place throughout the country. It’s a great opportunity to experience Korean culture and history firsthand but be prepared for large crowds at popular attractions and transportation hubs during these holidays.

Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, is a vibrant and exciting destination to visit any time of year, but summer can be particularly busy as more people around the world have longer vacations and look to travel and enjoy their time. For locals, you’ll find more people headed to Jeju Island, the numerous beaches around the country or out to camping sites in the mountains to cool off. Be like the locals and plan a trip to the coast to cool off.

Hanagae Beach is a popular weekend getaway or daytrip from Seoul. Located on Muuido Island just out in nearby Incheon, Korea, there are dramatic tides so you can take a dip and dig for clams in the same day. Walk along the beautiful boardwalk to see the rocky seaside nearby and stop into the restaurants to cool off and eat.

Located on the east coast of Korea, you’ll find white sands and crystal clear blue waters at Jeongdongjin Beach . It’s an idyllic spot to enjoy the summer in Korea. What’s even better is that you can easily take a train from Seoul to Jeongdongjin Station and be at the beach in just a couple of hours. The immaculate sands and water are gorgeous. It’ll be difficult to tear yourself away from this seaside spot.

While the beaches above are a bit more for the family friendly and camp happy traveler, Surfyy Beach is for the young, party, and cool seeker. Surfing isn’t yet majorly popular in Korea, but it is getting there. Surfyy Beach is a surfers-only beachside where you’ll find a fun beachside bar with beanbags to lounge by day and a music hot spot by night.

Get on a surf board or just enjoy the sandy vibes. Everyone is welcome. (PS While this is a surfing only beach, it’s flanked by swimming beaches on either side so you’ll get plenty of beach fun in here.)

Chuam Beach (추암해수욕장)

Chuam Beach quickly became one of our favorite spots to visit especially when the KTX expanded the train line so there’s a train station nearby that makes it super easy to get to. Chuam Beach features nice sand, great waters, but also a suspension bridge, sculpture park, and boardwalk with restaurants and cafes. All of that to say, it’s a great daytrip or weekend away from Seoul with a variety of things to check out so you don’t have to just sit on the sand all day if you want something more.

One of the most beautiful places I’ve been in Korea, the Sinduri seaside is on the west coast of Korea in northern Taean-gun. It’s a huge beach but it’s also backed by some gorgeous sand dunes. These are actually the only sand dunes in Korea and you can walk along a trail that takes you through a gorgeous park to see them after a sunny day on the coast. This is an epic stop.

There are some majorly popular beaches down in Busan, Korea come summertime. Songdo was actually the first public beach in Korea and is a favorite leisure area for Busan locals. Enjoy soft sand, great waters for swimming but you can also take a suspension bridge above and visit a mountain park when you visit Songdo Beach too. There’s a lot in one place making this our go-to spot in Busan each summer.

Last, but certainly not least, if you’re wanting to see why everyone is heading to Jeju Island, then check out Hamdeok Beach for a weekend… or longer. We have used this as our go-to on Jeju Island numerous times because it’s perfect for family fun. The beach is vast during the day with tide pools that turns into water for swimming by afternoon. It’s just a gorgeous area with plenty of space for people to spread out.

The best summer festivals in Korea

Summer festivals are a mix of cultural events and music festivals. You’ll find a lot of beachside spots with celebrations and water water water to help cool off.

In Korea the three hottest days of summer are referred to as sambok (삼복) or boknal (복날). Covering the span of a month, the three hottest days of the summer were traditionally a holiday for the farmers. Getting away to a nearby mountain valley or the coast to cool off before the rice harvest was the plan. Though the hottest days of summer may not be celebrated exactly the same anymore, you can bet that everyone is dreamily looking out of the windows at work wishing they were someplace cooler.

Probably the biggest and most popular of all of the summer festivals in Korea, the Boryeong Mud Festival in Chungcheongnam-do features mud, mud, and more mud. Learn about the health benefits of the mud and then play, slip, slide, and just enjoy the muddy beachside.

Every region has its claim to fame and it’s must eat food it seems and in Daegu, they decided to host a massive chicken and beer festival for theirs. Korean fried chicken has been touted the world over.

If you want to try some of the best Korean friend chicken with some great maekju, or Korean beer, then head here and also have fun watching live performances and entertainment while you eat.

In the summer you will start to find that flowers are even blooming and floating on the tops of the lakes in Korea and one of those beautiful places to see this is the Semiwon botanical garden.

Dedicated to the lotus flower, the 180,000 square-meter park features ponds just for the beautiful floating blooms. Visit to see but also make lotus leaf tea, organic soap, or a necklace among other fun experiences come festival time.

Just one of many awesome music festivals that happen in Korea throughout the summer, the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival is one of the biggest festivals each year and features some of Korea’s and the world’s biggest rock acts. In the past, musicians like Weezer and Nine Inch Nails have graced the stage. Be sure to check out who is playing this year.

One of the biggest EDM festivals in Korea, the World DJ Festival has been kicking off the summer with awesome music for many years in Korea and will keep up the fun this year too. This is definitely one of those fests that will really make you feel as if summer has truly arrived.

A fun festival to end the summer with, the Mufu Firefly Festival celebrates the fireflies that flicker in the night. What a romantic and simple way to embrace the end of summer.

This festival roves throughout Korea from Seoul to Gwangju then on to Incheon, Daegu, Busan, Daejeon, Suwon, Sokcho, and Jeju. Basically, wherever you are, there will be a waterbomb festival near you!

The ultimate water EDM festival, there are live performances from Korean and international DJs along with “1 million liters of water to beat the heat”. Held at SeoulLand in Gwacheon, it will be wet and wild and all kinds of fun.

Taebaek Mountain is a popular location for a winter snow and ice festival, but in the summer it becomes home to hundreds of sunflowers. Visit in the summer to see this quintessential summer bloom.

Most tourists to Korea will head to Busan as their second must-see city especially in the summer months. If you visit at the right time though, you will also catch the sea festival which takes place across the city at top beaches like Haeundae, Gwangalli, Daedaepo, Songdo, and Songjeong. From sand sculptures to fireworks, there is a ton to enjoy during the event.

A supercool arts and culture festival, Seoul Fringe Fest takes place in August usually and you can see and partake in various artistic events in Mapo-gu and Seodaemun-gu in popular areas like Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong among others. For something more traditional, head to Seocheon this summer to learn more about Hansan ramie fabric, a registered UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Experience weaving the traditional Korean natural fiber and try on clothing made from mosi, as it’s called in Korean.

Don’t want to head to the coast to get wet and wild? Well, you can join a massive watergun fight in the streets of Sinchon. There are live performances and artists and tons and tons of water fun. It’s… unique.

Things to do in the summer in Korea

There are around 3,400 islands in South Korea. It’s actually in the list of top 10 countries in the world for most islands. And most people never see them! Even better is that you don’t have to head south to see them all. There are some just a couple hours from Seoul and some you can even get to via Seoul’s train system. Here are some of the great islands and guides to use to go island hopping in Korea this summer.

• Incheon Islands : There are 70 islands in Incheon alone. Here is a guide to 16 of the best islands in Incheon to visit. Some of them you can get to by train and some take a ferry. Enjoy!
• Udo Island : While it’s big brother, Jeju Island, is where most people are headed, Udo Island has a unique vibe all it’s own that is super fun to explore.
• Seonyudo Island : This island off the coast of Gunsan in Jeollabuk-do is an idyllic island for many locals each summer. From boat rides to sun sets, this is a beautiful escape to enjoy this summer.
• Modo, Sindo, and Sido Islands : This trio of islands sits in Incheon and is a quick ferry ride from the island you landed on when you flew in. You can explore these islands in a day or stay for the weekend. You’ll feel far away when you’re really really close to Seoul still.
• Oido Island and Daebudo Island : These two islands can be reached via the Seoul subway system which is pretty cool if you ask me. See how far the subway can take you and visit an island while you’re at it.
• Ulleungdo Island : This is the island for the really adventurous. The weather is erratic and you can get stuck there if you aren’t following the weather warnings. It’s so worth the long ferry to get there though. Trust me.

From large waterparks to splashpads in local parks, there is always some water to find to have fun in especially during the summer. Most of the water parks in Korea are attached to hotels so you can make a whole weekend of it or enjoy a staycation if you live in Korea.

There are numerous ways to enjoy the Han River Parks from picnicking to swimming. There are eight swimming pools along the Han to take advantage of and they will definitely help you beat the heat in Seoul this summer.

One of our favorites is the Nanji Water Playground , great for little kids, but it’s also an infinity pool that makes you look like you’re about to swim off into the Han River! It’s the cheapest infinity pool you’ll find in Seoul, that’s for sure.

Summer is the season for spectacular sunsets in South Korea. If you’re staying in Seoul, check out this list of the best places to see the sunsets in Seoul . The KBO league baseball games are in full swing in the summer in Korea. There are nine teams in the KBO league and let me tell you, the fans are absolutely dedicated. Expect a different atmosphere than you might find in the States as there are cheerleaders, fans with bags on their heads, noise makers, and even specific songs they’ve made up for their teams.

Also, they’ll be eating squid and a few other delicacies that might be a bit different than you expect. But the game itself is the same and an absolute blast to experience.

Try Han River water sports

There are numerous water sports that you can experience on the Han River in the summer and paddle boarding is one of them. SUP has become popular in recent years. There is also kayaking and windsurfing.

The spring is a great time to explore Seoul by bike. Rent a bike down on the Han River and see the fauna and flora come back to life, or rent the bikes in downtown Seoul to get from point A to point B as it’s not warm enough. 

Maybe it’s raining, or you just want to feel cool while still being surrounded by water. Aquariums can’t be beat in the summer months. There are some really great aquariums all around Korea . If you’re not ready to dive into the water yourself, head to an aquarium and cool off as the fishies swim by.

The Cheonggyecheon Stream is the perfect place to take a walk in downtown Seoul in the summer. Come summer, you’ll find many Seoulites sitting by streams in the evenings to cool off. You can too. You can walk from Gwanghwamun Square down to Gwangjang Market for lunch or dinner or go all the way out to the Han River along the stream path.

The days can be hot so one way to beat the heat is to wait until dark when it cools off a bit. There are some great things to do at night in Seoul . From the night markets to bus tours and Han River ferries, you can dance the night away or just enjoy the quiet atmosphere of parks with the night lights surrounding you.

If hiking during the day is just too hot, you can even hike along the Seoul Fortress Wall or Suwon Fortress Wall at night as both are lit throughout the night hours.

Summer flower hunting in Seoul

While spring cherry blossoms are what most people think of when they picture flowers in Korea, the blooms don’t stop when spring ends. In the summer, you can find lavender, daisies, and trumpet vines around Seoul and beyond.

Best places to see flowers in Seoul in the summer

You’ll find trumpet vines growing along walls throughout the city, but the largest wall of them an be found from mid-June in Ttukseom Han River Park . This is a gorgeous, albeit invasive species that overtakes the wall in the park when to the furthest west in the park. You can’t miss it.

Herb Village is north of Seoul and is a beautiful garden that features both an indoor and outdoor area. The lavender fields here are our favorite and the closest ones to Seoul that you can find. While there are other lavender fields in Korea, they’re much further from Seoul. Take the opportunity to head to Herb Village this summer for fields of flowers and flower bibimbap for lunch.

Take a daytrip to the nearby Ganghwado Island this summer. You can take a bus from Sinchon or Hapjeong and be out there before you know it. Mahogany Cafe is known for their dense and beautiful daisy garden. It’s beautiful and they even make a cake decorated with daisies to match. Get a picture walking amongst the flowers that Koreans say look like sunny-side up eggs. Can you see it?

Just south of Seoul in Bucheon is where you should go to find the most gorgeous garden of roses. Picture roses in every color you can image spread across a couple hillsides. Blooming throughout June, it’ll be hot and humid, but those views are incredible. I’ve never seen so many roses in one place before. Mt. Dodang actually features the largest rose garden in the country . Go go go!

Best Korean food to eat in the summer

When it comes to summer staples, there are some great dishes to help you cool off in Korean cuisine. From the refreshing eats to the rejuvenating when you just don’t have the stamina anymore, there are a lot of options to dish up.

Bingsu (빙수)

Bingsu is a Korean shaved ice summer treat. The most traditional and commonly seen is patbingsu which consists of shaved ice, red bean paste, tteok or rice cake and ground nut powder. This is the traditional mix, but these days you can get the shaved ice topped with strawberries, blueberries, or even have coffee mixed in. It’s definitely a cool sweet treat for summer. This what most tourists probably picture when they think of something to cool off in the summer and there is plenty of it to go around. Find out where to get bingsu in Seoul .

Pyeongyang naengmyeon is served with buckwheat noodles and a mild cold broth and my husband will tell you that it is one of those love it or hate it dishes. The soup has a mild broth. It’s a refreshing delectable soup that might take some time to grow on you, but it is oh so good when enjoyed at the right spot.

You really won’t want to miss out on some of that cold broth action when the temperatures really start to boil. While traditional Pyeongyang naengmyeon is refreshingly simple and mild, the mul naengmyeon can be spiced up a bit. Not all Koreans like the mild taste of Pyeongyang naengmyeon so there is a spicier, tangier version. Combining julienned cucumbers, sliced Korean pear, radish, and a boiled egg or cold boiled beef, spicy mustard and vinegar make the broth quite tangy. 

One of my favorite summer soups. I wait until this one pops onto menus. Unlike some others on this list that you can find all year round, this one comes and goes with the seasons. Made with a soy bean broth, though thicker than what you’re used to if you’ve enjoyed soy milk. The soy milk sold to drink has no solids and is often artificially thickened with xantham gum or carrageenan and is missing the natural fiber that comes from soybeans. Kongguk soy milk though still has the fiber AND has some delectable little bits that make the flavor nuttier. It’s soooooo good.

According to Eastern medicine, blood concentrates near the skin in hot weather to cool the body down but this can lead to bad circulation in the stomach and muscles leading to the loss of appetite or lethargy common during the summer. To offset this, Koreans believe in iyeol chiyeol (이열치열) or the idea that we need to warm the body from the stomach on out. 

Ginseng chicken stew is the most popular dish on the hottest days of the summer. Served in a hot bowl about to boil over, one small tender chicken stuffed with rice sits in the broth with ginseng, garlic and jujube dates. It’s delicious and really does cool you down.

Eel, is rich in vitamin A and E  and said to stimulate blood circulation and prevent aging and wrinkles. This dish is really quite popular all year round. It’s also rather popular with men in Korea who believe it to be an aphrodisiac and good for their stamina. But eel is also popular with women because of its anti-aging uses. Grab some eel, put it in a leaf and top it with some soy sauce and ginger and you’ll eat the whole thing before you even realize it.

Though it may be fun-size compared to its neighbors China and Russia, South Korea more than holds its own when it comes to incredible landscapes, cultural attractions and a dazzling food and nightlife scene.

In fact, South Korea's size paired with its ultra-reliable public transit system is what makes it all so accessible. Travelers can go from mountaintop to beachside or from village to megacity – and back again – in a single day. Not that we recommend rushing your journey – with so many unique places to visit, you could dedicate an entire trip to one spot. Start your travel to-do list now with our seven favorite places to visit in South Korea.

Best place for nightlife

Home to half of South Korea's population, Seoul  is also the most popular city for tourists to visit. The capital has an electric vibe at any hour of the day or night. Between the city's low-key watering holes, high-end cocktail lounges and always-fun noraebang (karaoke bars), Seoul has something to offer every late-night reveler.

Some of the newest trendsetting bars are located in Euljiro, while many longstanding favorites are in the tried-and-true nightlife neighborhoods of Gangnam , Hongdae and Itaewon . Gangnam is where the most expensive clubs are concentrated, while Hongdae is a more affordable option for budget-conscious travelers and university students. Itaewon has a reputation for drawing an international crowd.

Best place for maritime culture

Situated on the southern coast, South Korea's second city, Busan , overflows with a maritime culture as lively as it is varied. Setting the tone is Busan Port, the oldest and largest in the country (and also the sixth-busiest in the world), handling some 80% of South Korea's container cargo. The nearby Busan Modern History Museum tells the story of the port's pivotal role in South Korea's history. From there, up and down the coastline are any number of beautiful beaches, parks, observatories, villages and even a temple, Haedong Yonggungsa , one of the country's only oceanside temples.

At Jagalchi , South Korea's largest fish market, the day's catch is arranged in stall after stall of fish, eel, crabs, sea squirts, abalone, and more. Shoppers can select their seafood on the ground level and then take it up to one of the restaurants on the floors above, where the staff will expertly de-scale, de-shell, gut or filet and then cook it for you. For other scrumptious seafood bites, look for restaurants along the beach specializing in jogae gui , grilled shellfish served with a variety of dipping sauces like chogochujang (vinegar red pepper sauce), soy sauce with wasabi, and melted butter with onions.

3. Gyeongju

Best place to discover ancient treasures

As the capital of the Silla Kingdom, when the city was called Donggyeong ("eastern capital"), Gyeongju is a treasure trove of ancient relics, religious to royal. Gyeongju National Museum houses a fair number of them – including ornate jewelry, earthenware jars, prayer bells and Buddha statues – but even more artifacts lie beyond. Gyeongju is known as South Korea's museum without walls.

See the royal tombs of Tumuli-gongwon ; the oldest astrological observatory in East Asia, Cheomseongdae ; the Buddhist grotto of Seokguram ; the picturesque palace of Donggung; and the temple halls, pagodas and bridges of Bulguk-sa . Woljeonggyo, a covered wooden bridge with striking red columns, green roof beams and two end towers, might be the prettiest bridge in all of South Korea – even more so at night when it's illuminated with lights.

Best place for contemporary history

Regarded as the birthplace of Korean democracy, Gwangju was the site of the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980, the 10-day-long armed resistance against Chun Doo-hwan's authoritarian military regime. After the brutal repression of some 600 university student protesters, the people of Gwangju stood up and joined in rebellion, resulting in state massacre and torture. Despite the movement's suppression, it's seen as a turning point in South Korea's struggle for democracy.

To better understand this pivotal event in the country's history, go to the May 18th Memorial Park and National Cemetery . You can also take a walk down Chungjang-ro, a now-converted shopping and entertainment street that was once ground zero of the uprising.

Best place for beaches and waterfalls

South of the Korean mainland in the Yellow Sea, Jeju-do  is blessed with a balmy subtropical climate, making it the country's most popular vacation destination. The island is in such high demand that the flight between Seoul and Jeju City is the busiest air route in the world. Just one glimpse of Jeju's glittering white-sand and black-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and volcanic topography of calderas, cones and tuffs, and it's easy to see why so many mainlanders flock to the island for a bit of R&R.

While Jeju's beaches make the perfect natural setting for lounging oceanside with a book and a cocktail, the island has plenty more to do than just relax. Aside from climbing the country's tallest mountain, Hallasan, outdoors adventure seekers can go surfing at Woljeongri or Jungmun beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving at Munseom Island, spelunking in the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, waterfall chasing at Jeongbang Pokpo or Cheonjiyeon Pokpo , or tewoo rafting aboard a traditional Jeju boat at the Soesokkak Estuary.

6. Gangwon-do 

Best place for winter sports

The site of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Gangwon-do is home to the best ski resorts in South Korea. Winter and summer have their charms but are not for the faint of heart, as temperatures plummet and soar, respectively.

No matter when you choose to visit, use this guide to help you delve into genteel temples, sprawling palaces and historical hanok houses juxtaposed with cutting-edge technology, a renowned food scene , and innovative architecture and design.

The Weather in Seoul

Each of the four seasons is distinct in Seoul. Winter can be bitterly cold, with icy blasts sweeping down from Siberia. Spring temperatures range from 50 to 70 degrees F, perfect for frolicking amid the pink blossoms of the cherry trees. Summer is hot and extremely humid, driving many Koreans into the city’s thousands of air-conditioned coffee shops. Keep in mind that June through September is also typhoon season, with high rainfall and a chance of heavy storms. Fall brings a return to mild weather ranging from 50 to 80 degrees F and makes for an excellent time to explore the many hiking trails within the city limits.  

Peak Season in Seoul

Boasting the most agreeable weather, spring and fall are naturally congested times in Seoul, though school holidays in the summer make it a fierce contender for the city’s busiest season award. However, with the plethora of cafes, museums, and galleries sprinkled near all the major attractions throughout the city, a refuge from the weather is never far away, meaning a visit to Seoul is enjoyable during any season.

The Seoul sprawling metropolitan area has a population of over 26 million.   With that number of people calling the city home, it ensures there’s no real “off” season—most major attractions even remain open during Korea’s national holidays. While outdoors landmarks such as palaces and temples are open year-round, they may occasionally close due to inclement winter weather or summer typhoons.

Though winter can be slightly cheaper, prices in South Korea’s capital remain steady during most of the year except for two main spikes—the national holidays, Seollal, and Chuseok, the dates of which fluctuate annually but generally occur during February and September. During these times, the entire country mobilizes, making train tickets, flights, hotels—you name it—more expensive.

Key Festivals and Events in Seoul

Korea has a deep love of festivals that range from traditional to kooky. Observing everything from history and film to food and music, Seoul is a city that loves a party. No matter what month you visit, you’ll find an event to suit your mood. It's impossible to avoid the citywide festivities and cultural events during the Seollal (the Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holidays.

With Christmas festivities complete and the average temperatures hovering around 25 degrees F, you’d think the crowds would be minimal in January. But this month marks the winter school holidays in South Korea, which adds domestic tourists to the city’s already buzzing population. Seoul can get even more packed and expensive when Seollal falls at the end of January, which it does every few years.

It’s chilly and dry in Seoul in February, but the streets are packed with shoppers and visitors in anticipation of the Lunar New Year, which generally falls this month. Colorful displays in shop windows, performances in city squares, and special holiday menus at restaurants make February a fun time to visit South Korea’s capital.

Events to check out:

• Seollal is Korea’s Lunar New Year celebration, with traditional performances and activities taking place at Seoul’s major royal palaces.

Don’t put your coat away yet! Though spring technically begins this month, Seoul’s northern latitude means temperatures in March linger in the 40s. In recent years, however, warm temperatures have surprised everyone, including the trees, making an early cherry blossom season a real possibility.

• The Seoul International Marathon has taken place since 1931, making it Asia’s oldest marathon. The race begins at Gwanghwamun Palace and finishes across the Han River at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.

April is said to be Seoul’s most beautiful month, a time when cherry blossoms float through the air giving the city a whimsical pink glow. With temperatures mainly in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit, it’s the ideal time to visit, which also makes it more crowded and expensive. It’s still possible to get good deals, though, since the weather can be fickle, and no one knows exactly when the cherry blossoms will make their highly anticipated appearance.

• Yeongdeunpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival consists of performances, activities, and exhibitions that take place amidst the cherry trees.
• Held in honor of Buddha’s birthday is the Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeon Deung Hoe) , which has taken place for over 1,300 years, and consists of a vibrant parade that lights up the city center. (Buddha’s birthday is observed on different dates each year, meaning this festival is sometimes held in May.)

May is Seoul’s Goldilocks window when it’s not too hot or too cold, kids are in school, and the rainy season hasn’t yet begun. It’s also a relatively inexpensive time to visit, as there are no major holidays or festivals in the city this month.

• Jongmyo Daeje is a remembrance of Korea’s royal ancestors and includes a parade, costumes, and traditional performances.

June is a weather wildcard, where temperatures can range from the 60s to 80s. It’s also the beginning of typhoon season, meaning rain becomes more of a possibility.

• The Seoul World DJ Festival draws music lovers the world over for a weekend of continuous mixing.
• Though not as widely celebrated as Seollal and Chuseok, Dano is another of Korea’s major holidays and is observed with traditional customs and costumes at the National Folk Museum of Korea.

Let the humidity begin. July is the start of Korea’s hottest and most humid months. If you do plan to visit during the dead of summer, plan outdoor activities in the morning and evening, and schedule indoor visits during the scorching midday heat.

• Cool off by participating in the Sinchon Water Gun Festival—always a crowd-pleasing favorite since July is one of the country’s hottest months.

Korean children have school holidays in August, and you’ll likely find them splashing in one of the city’s multiple fountains and streams. Temperatures peak around 90 degrees F, and August is also one of the rainiest months in the ROK. If the weather doesn’t scare you away, then you should be able to find good deals on flights and accommodation.

• Becoming more popular every year is the Seoul Fringe Festival, bringing both local and international artists and performers to the streets of Seoul.

Chuseok generally occurs in September, making it a bustling month in Seoul. While thousands of people depart the capital to visit their hometowns, thousands more spill in to celebrate the festivities. It’s a crowded and slightly more expensive time to visit, but the fall colors and the festive atmosphere make it worth the trade-off.

• Korea possesses a thriving film industry, with many movies making their debut at the Seoul International Film Festival.
• Traditional Chuseok celebrations are held at the city’s main palaces and temples.

Tourist numbers are relatively low in October, despite it being the time when the leaves begin to show off their brilliant hues. The city’s central focal point, Namsan mountain, is the perfect place for an autumn walk and features panoramic views from N Seoul Tower at its peak.

• The Hanwha Seoul International Fireworks Festival is one of the country’s largest festivals, drawing over one million people to Han River Park to watch the dazzling displays.

Seoul temperatures start to drop in November (think somewhere between 30 to 50 degrees F). Still, this month brings with it fewer crowds, autumn feasts, and the colorful lanterns that make up one of the city’s most anticipated and beautiful festivals.

• Kimchi is omnipresent in Korea, and there’s no better way to get acquainted with the ubiquitous side dish than by making and eating it at the Seoul Kimchi Festival .
• Millions of visitors flock to see the inventive displays at the Seoul Lantern Festival , where colorful lanterns stretch nearly a mile along the human-made Cheonggyecheon Stream winding through central Seoul.

Baby, it’s cold outside. By December, temperatures drop back into the 20s and 30s, which makes a visit to one of the city’s many teahouses or steamy bathhouses a priority. Christmas is widely observed in South Korea, and shops and department stores deck their halls accordingly. Combined with the country’s tax-free shopping program, it’s a busy time of year to visit.

• Korea’s two main theme parks, Lotte World and Everland (just south of Seoul), host Christmas celebrations with decorations, parades, and performances that rival anything produced by Mickey Mouse.

Spring or fall is the best time to visit Seoul. Not only are the days comfortably warm, but the city is covered in spring cherry blossoms or fall foliage, making it one of the most beautiful times to be there.

In a city as big as Seoul, it's always bustling with people. However, the major holidays of Seollal (usually in February) and Chuseok (usually in September) are particularly busy travel times.
