Exclusive: Why her 2022 India Tour is an ‘emotional trip’ for Anoushka Shankar

Exclusive: Why her 2022 India Tour is an ‘emotional trip’ for Anoushka Shankar

The grammy-nominated composer and sitarist will kickstart her india tour at good shepherd auditorium in bengaluru on december 11.

Anoushka Shankar is emotionally charged to be back home soon. The British-Indian-American sitar player will be touring India in December, after a gap of three years. Her tour coincides with the 10th death anniversary of her father, sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.

“I’m deeply excited about returning after this long pandemic-related gap. I’ll be bringing my children back after many years and I’m extremely excited about that too,” says the multiple Grammy Award-nominated sitar player in an exclusive conversation with The Federal ahead of the tour, which will see her perform six shows across three cities: Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi.

‘Playing my music at home’

Anoushka, who is the half-sister of American singer Norah Jones, divorced her husband of eight years, filmmaker Joe Wright, in 2018. She wrote the six songs in her 2020 EP, Love Letters — a meditation on love, desire, heartbreak, loss, and healing through loss — after her divorce. She lives in London with her two sons, Zubin and Mohan, and loves performing in India. ‘It’s always a favourite experience for me, playing this music at home, playing my music at home. I’m really excited about bringing some new music back to India,” she adds.

The 41-year-old composer and sitarist’s tour will kickstart at Good Shepherd Auditorium in Bengaluru on December 11, followed by a concert at Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai on December 16. It will conclude in Delhi on December 18 with a performance at Siri Fort Auditorium.

Anoushka will be touring to promote her new music releases and will be joined by a group of truly exceptional musicians, including British electronic musician Gold Panda (aka Derwin Decker) in interpreting the legacy of her father in the first half of her performances.

Like her father, Anoushka “feeds off” working creatively with others. On July 8 this year, she launched her latest live album, Between Us …, on German musician Nils Frahm’s Leiter Label. The LP features her longtime collaborator and Austrian Hang (handpan) maestro Manu Delago, alongside Holland’s Metropole Orkest. It is directed by Jules Buckley, English conductor, composer, and arranger.

Recorded in the Netherlands during her 2018 shows, Between Us… is her first live album since Live At Carnegie Hall (2001). It picks material from her four previous solo albums: Rise (2005), Traces of You (2013), Traveller (2015) and Land of God (2016). It also has one previously unreleased track.

Paying homage: Once upon a December

Anoushka will also pay homage to Jyoti Singh, the victim in the December 2012 gang rape and murder case during her Mumbai performance on December 16. “I’m already imagining it; it’s going to be a wonderfully emotional trip in many ways, returning after a long time. The 10th anniversary of my father’s passing overlaps with the 10th anniversary of the attack on Jyoti Singh. So, I’ll be releasing a piece of music around that as well.”

While Ravi Shankar passed away on December 11, the physiotherapy student was fatally assaulted on December 16. The sitarist says that it is very strange to be in a space where she has to look back at the two things that affected her very deeply. However, her return this time is on a different note. “It’s a new time and it’s mainly a very positive experience for me to be returning: uniting with many loved ones and getting to perform,” she says.

Anoushka Shankar

Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar had achieved global acclaim as a musician, composer, performer, and scholar of classical Indian music. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1962 for his outstanding contribution to Indian music and culture and was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1999. In the mid-1960s, he had come to be revered as the world’s leading musician. His preeminence was further augmented after he taught the wildly famous George Harrison how to play sitar; their creative journey paved the way for a four-disc compilation, Collaborations (2010). Shankar died in San Diego (California) at the age of 92 in 2012.

Strings that bind

Anoushka, who became the youngest and first woman recipient of a British House of Commons Shield in 1998, is also a film composer and impassioned activist. Her India show, she says, is divided into two parts of new music.

“One is a duet with the incredible electronic musician Gold Panda; it is a piece that is actually in response to my father’s work and music. We were in this together a few years ago and it’s a very different and special way that I get to interact with my father with music and that, I think, people would really enjoy.”

Anoushka Shankar

“In the second part, I’m playing with some incredible musicians: Arun Ghosh, Sarathy Korwar, Tom Farmer, Pirashanna Thevarajah, for my cross albums, but in new arrangements and with lots of new and exciting solos and really highlighting and showcasing these incredible musicians as well,” she says.

Ravi Shankar’s revolutionary approach to fusing different musical traditions made him world-renowned, with huge followers worldwide. His work has influenced Anoushka as an artist, but she says it’s impossible to quantify his impact on her music and how his work influenced her own in a few words.

“He’s the centre of my musical learning and my musical influence. He was my teacher from the beginning. By virtue of being his daughter, he was the person I lived with, and spent a lot of time with. So, of course, he is the greatest influence on my music,” says Anoushka, who was 13 when she made her concert debut with her father. The last three decades have seen her become the first Indian musician to perform live or to serve as a presenter at the Grammy Awards, with seven nominations under her belt.

The late sitar maestro has left an indelible imprint on her music; a legacy that has been beautifully carried forward by the prodigal daughter. What legacy is she going to leave behind? She says she does not think in such terms. “I hope that people continue to connect with my music and that it reaches and moves people. I don’t know what I’ll second hope for,” she says.

Anoushka Shankar

When Ravi Shankar had died, Anoushka had been working on her seventh album. Traces of You features tracks she had composed in memory of her father. She also collaborated with Norah Jones for three tracks in the album, including The Sun Won’t Set . Jones, who had been distant from her father when he was alive, croons in a track Unsaid: “Love” wasn’t left unsaid/”Thank you” that was left unsaid/”I know you” maybe left unsaid/I don’t know what was said.

Music: A thread to Indian culture

Born in London, Anoushka spent most of her time shuttling between London and Delhi. She says that music was really important throughout. “I grew up between London, India, and America and music actually was the thread that really connected me to my culture and my heritage. More than anything, it was my living experience of India and Indian culture. Music obviously made me incredibly proud; having the opportunity to travel around the world with my father — who was an ambassador for our music, arts and culture — and the love that he got from people around the world made me very proud.”

Anoushka tasted success early in life, but that doesn’t allow her to rest as she still has many things to accomplish. “There’s a lot that I still want to achieve, but I also feel grateful that I get to have a career, play music, and connect with people. That’s a gift and a joy and I hope I get to keep doing that. In a material sense, I would love to get to do more compositions for dance, theatre, and films,” says the performer, adding that her career has largely been made up of performing her own albums and collaborations and live tours, and it would be nice to explore compositions even more.

Anoushka Shankar to tour India in December

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) Grammy-nominated composer and sitarist Anoushka Shankar is set to return to India with a three-city tour in December.     The tour will kick start at Good Shepherd Auditorium in Bengaluru on December 11, followed by a concert at Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai on December 16.     It will conclude in Delhi on December 18 with a performance at SiriFort Auditorium, the organisers said in a press release.     Anoushka, 41, will be touring in support of her new music releases. She will navigate through experimental and exciting new sonic vistas and present an invigorating perspective on Indian classical music.     "I’m beyond excited to finally return to India to perform after such a long gap. I feel I’m in a different place musically and creatively now, and I can’t wait to share this new and exciting show with my audiences in India.     "I’m blessed to have a group of truly exceptional musicians joining me this time and I hope people enjoy the music," the musician, who last toured India in 2020, said in a statement.     According to the release, Anoushka will be joined by British electronic musician Gold Panda (aka Derwin Decker) in interpreting the legacy of her father, legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, in the first half of her performances.     The duo will form a collaborative bridge between the electronic and classical instrumental worlds inspired by the late music icon's compositions.     In the second half of her performances, a quintet of musicians comprising clarinettist Arun Ghosh, Carnatic percussionist Pirashanna Thevarajah, drummer Sarathy Korwar and upright bassist Tom Farmer will accompany Anoushka for an inventive exploration of her selected works including recently released digital album 'Between Us...'.     Anoushka will also pay a homage to the victim of December 2012 gang-rape and murder case during her Mumbai performance on December 16.     The musician will be releasing a reimagined version of her 2013 track "In Jyoti's Name" from her album 'Traces Of You'.     Titled 'In Her Name', the song features a specially-written poem by Nikita Gill.     "How is it that ten years after the heartbreaking gang-rape and murder that sent shockwaves of horror around the world, we are still inundated by stories of women who are attacked, murdered, policed, and unable to live in freedom and safety?     "The same ripping feeling in my gut that I felt in 2012 manifests over and over when I read of any one of these precious losses of life. With 'In Her Name', we have tried to broaden the lens across the current global female experience, fighting for safety, for freedom from fear and for freedom of choice," Shankar said.     The accompanying music video pivots around a performance by Bharanatyam dancer Mythili Prakash, supported by artwork curated by artist-activist Shilo Shiv Suleyman.     The tour is being curated by Alchemist Marketing Solutions.     "We are elated to bring Anoushka Shankar to the fantastic audiences of Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru with a never-before performed set of music.     "We have got a like-minded partner in Brookfield Properties for the tour. Alchemist Live opens its year after a long hiatus with a world-class production like this, ahead of the 4th season of Delhi Theatre Festival that would be announced soon," said Anujita Jain, CEO, Alchemist Marketing Solutions. Anoushka Shankar: Looking forward to reconnect with India

Grammy nominated anoushka shankar is ready to be back to india with multi-city tours in december, and she is excited about it.

Anoushka Shankar is coming home. The sitarist, who recently received two Grammy 2023 nominations, is gearing up for her multi-city tour in India, in December. During her time here, the artiste says she wants to introduce her children — sons Zubin and Mohan — to Indian culture.

Anoushka Shankar has announced India Tour in December

“I am really looking forward to coming back to India with a concert. It has been such a long gap, and so much has happened for all of us in that time. Now, I am looking forward to just coming back, reconnecting not with just the audiences, but also with friends and family. It means a lot to me,” Shankar tells us.

The Grammy-nominated composer and sitarist is set to return to India with a three-city tour in Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi in the first week of December. The tour will kick start at Good Shepherd Auditorium in Bengaluru on December 11, followed by a concert at Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai on December 16 and in Delhi on December 18 with a performance at SiriFort Auditorium.

“I have so many things added to my itinerary this time. But honestly I am looking forward to everything. It is mainly about food, and showing lots of things to my kids, all the sights. Just to explore it and reconnect with the country as much as we can,” says the daughter of the late sitar legend Ravi Shankar.

The composer admits that coming to India for performance is always special. “There is something unique about it. There is a particular nuance to the connection with the audience and a feeling that the audience is also welcoming me home, which makes you feel special. When I’m playing music in the country, it comes from a source connection, which feels really beautiful”.

In fact, she ensures that she carries a bit of India with wherever she goes, but does take it as a pressure.

“Two decades ago, when there was not as much coming out of India. There was a sense that I felt that responsibility to represent India and our music and our roots a little bit more. Also, it was a beautiful honour to share our music and our culture in that way with people,” she says, adding, “To some extent, I had to learn how to make through a subtle process for myself, and just try and make music, and not attach too much weight to it”.

Anoushka Shankar on her return to India, her upcoming tour and longlast memories of Bengaluru

Anoushka Shankar

Indian-origin Hindustani classical vocalist and sitar player, Anoushka Shankar returns to India after two years with a brand new setlist for The Anoushka Shankar Project India Tour 2022 . The nine-time Grammy-nominee who is also the youngest woman to earn the British House of Commons Shield will open the tour in Bengaluru with renowned artistes such as English electronic record producer Gold Panda (Derwin Schlecker), clarinettist Arun Ghosh and carnatic percussionist Pirashanna Thevarajah. The artiste talks to us about her performance, her career and more...

You were the first Indian musician to perform live at the Grammy Awards. What was running through your mind when you were asked to play? I remember the experience clearly and even though it was my second nomination, it still felt wild just to be nominated and to be asked to play as well. Then I found out that I was the first Indian musician who will be playing at the Grammys and it was very exciting  and special.

You are returning to your home country after two years. How excited are you about performing here? It’s a very deep excitement. There’s some kind of a longing of not having been there in so long and all of us have gone through so much since then. I just want to come back and reconnect as a person and as a musician.

anoushka shankar india tour 2022

Besides your performance, what are you looking forward to from your visit to Bengaluru? Bengaluru has always been one of the main cities I return to. I have very strong memories and beautiful performing experiences there. When I was really young, I would come and spend time in Cubbon Park and in the city because my grandmother lived there. Now I wish to visit my aunt and cousins.

How did the idea of collaborating with Gold Panda come about? Tell us a little about the performance you both will put together at the concert. Gold Panda is actually a friend and after listening to his music, I wanted to explore an opportunity to create something special. Our duet is an amalgam of electronic and classical music. We will be playing a piece that we wrote and developed together using compositions and concepts of my father from his recording career.

Besides your album Between Us, which is nominated for two Grammys, what else will be part of your setlist? This album was influenced by the pandemic because I really felt the urge to release an album that was about togetherness and connection. The show will feature music from across albums in new arrangements along with a previously unreleased song Jannah . We also have In Her Name which is a reimagined version of my 2013 track In Jyoti’s Name .

Rs 750 upwards. December 11, 7.30 pm. At Good Shepherd Auditorium, Museum Road

Following in her legendary father’s footsteps, Anoushka Shankar carries on the family tradition. Trained on the sitar as a child, she began performing publicly at the age of thirteen. With her father Ravi Shankar’s musical career taking off, she joined him touring the world at fourteen playing prestigious venues such as Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. At the age of sixteen, Anoushka signed her first record deal with subsidiary of EMI, Angel Records. The following year she released her debut self-titled album produced by her father which was heavily influenced by Ravi’s development of the raga style. The album helped catapult into the forefront of world music. In 2003, Anoushka received a Grammy nomination (alongside her half-sister, Norah Jones) in the World Music category for her third album making her not only the youngest nominee but also the first woman in that category. She would return three years later becoming the first Indian to perform at the awards ceremony. Collaborating with Indian fusion artist Karsh Kale on the album ‘Breathing Under Water’ allowed Anoushka the chance to experiment with mixing the sound of classical sitar with electronic beats, adding a whole new dimension to her music.

The musical heritage of her family and passion for traditional Hindi music is deeply rooted in her veins which is ever more apparent in a live setting. Dressed in traditional Hindi clothing, Shankar sits cross legged on a carpeted raised platform accompanied by a tabla maestro and a shenai punter. There is a sense of calm in the air as she begins to play with an endearing intensity as she gets lost in the music, closing her eyes as she pours out her heart and soul. It’s enchanting and the audience cannot help but be mesmerised. You can leave your troubles at the door as Shankar makes you forget and entices you with a rejuvenated state of mind. It’s a magical experience that you won’t forget as Anoushka Shankar elegantly carries on her father’s legacy.

Anoushka Shankar's performance was brilliant and deeply moving. Beyond the skill and evocative technique she and her group exhibited, I was taken with her emphasis on human trauma and refugee crises in her music. Such catastrophes as the Syrian Refugee Crisis and global wall-building (Israel comes to mind) came through in her album, as she described, unintentionally. Her compassion and genuine empathy for these people and their children whose lives, unlike hers, are no longer Lands of Gold was such a refreshing message because the pathos of these crises is largely lost in Western media. Here was a compassion that sought expression and solace in musical expression - simply pure and good. I was uplifted by this concert and I won't soon forget it.

What an absolutely beautiful performance. Such grace and indescribable talent. Tie that together with her compassion and you get a performance that will leave you feeling that you too have the power and responsibility to make a difference in this world.

The daughter of legendary sitar master Ravi Shankar, she was raised straddling east and west, moving between London, Delhi and California. She performs music from her career as captured on her latest album, the GRAMMY-nominated 2022 live recording Between Us .

A dedicated acolyte of her father who has immersed herself in classical Hindustani music, the nine-time GRAMMY nominee has forged an independent identity by collaborating with a vast array of artists from jazz icon Herbie Hancock and violinist Joshua Bell to the DJ duo Thievery Corporation, rock band Jethro Tull and Asian Underground pioneer Karsh Kale.

Following 2013’s Traces of You , which featured guest vocals from her half-sister and pop superstar Norah Jones came a series of increasingly accomplished releases including 2015’s pure Indian project Home , 2016’s Land of Gold , and her latest studio session Love Letters , recorded in collaboration with guests Alev Lenz, Shilpa Rao, Ibeyi, and Ayanna Witter-Johnson.

Tracks from these albums are represented on Between Us , a remarkable live document of a 2018 performance in the Netherlands featuring longtime collaborator Manu Delago on percussion along with Holland’s Metropole Orkest.

Combining myriad global influences with the melodic sophistication of northern India, Shankar takes the latest bold step in a world music legacy.

The sitar star and nine-time GRAMMY nominee performs music from her career as captured on her latest album, the GRAMMY-nominated 2022 live recording Between Us .

…her exquisite sitar playing… lives up to the virtuosity that made her the youngest woman ever nominated for a World Music GRAMMY.
