How To Find (And Use) Background Music For Your Travel Vlog Videos

You probably don’t think of content creation as a casual activity. It might be a full-time job, a side hustle, or even a hobby that you’re passionate about. But whichever way you see it, it’s probably more than just a passing interest.

Filmmaking is an art, just like music composition or watercolor painting or poetry writing. And pursuing that art requires you to wear a lot of different hats.

All of those hats have something in common. The end goal is to tell a story, to make the viewer feel something. Videos can be nothing short of modern magic, a way for people to experience a place or a time or a lifestyle outside of the norm.

Creating this kind of next-level content isn’t just about knowing which lens to use. It’s not about how you use lighting or effects . It’s not even about the quality of your script or on-screen talent.

Telling a good story means knowing how to bring all the pieces together. And one key piece — something that often gets overlooked next to flashier things like cameras and coloring — is background music.

The Magic Of Great Background Music for Video

There are unsung heroes in every industry and field. (In fact, there’s a good chance that you have experience in that role if you’ve worked in video for very long.) But the concept of overlooked or underappreciated workers applies to non-human things too.

Background music does a lot of the heavy lifting in video content. Spending too much time in a scene or delivering too much exposition through dialogue is awkward. But adding in the right song can bring location to a place or hint at the subtle emotions in a conversation.

In other words, background music lets you cram more storytelling into your video without dragging things out or adding onto the runtime. A smart song choice can be a life hack for a content creator, and it’s a tool worth understanding and using.

Let’s look at some examples of how background music can develop your storytelling style.

In The Fellowship of the Ring , Howard Shore’s theme for the Shire is memorable and evocative. The music somehow gives life to a place that had been in people’s imaginations for (at the time) almost 65 years. That, in itself, played a large role in why this piece of music became so popular.

In terms of the opening scenes of The Fellowship of the Ring , you can feel the calmness of the Shire and see it unfold on the screen. But the background music validates what our eyes see because we can feel that same peace and security.

The connection between our sense of sight (the visuals) and our emotional understanding (the music) is something only background music can achieve.

Here’s another example of how a song can perfectly set the tone for a setting and story.

Regardless of whether or not you enjoy historical dramas (or British television in general), the opening credits of Downton Abbey are a prime example of what the right background music for video can do.

There’s no dialogue or action, but the music pulls viewers into the world of the 1910s in pre-war England. We only see glimpses of the house and its decor, but the score creates a kind of drama right away.

There are notes of mystery and intrigue, hidden behind an impressive orchestral arrangement that feels both modern and like it belongs in the show’s world. The underlying tensions set a tone for the rest of the show, and that only happens because of the background music.

The emotion of this scene is perfectly layered, and the background music plays directly into it. At the start of the clip, you can feel a rising sense of danger as Maximus prepares to kill Commodus, despite the fact that it would surely mean death for Maximus too.

That tension vanishes as Lucius runs out. Maximus realizes his hope of vengeance is gone, and the sudden silence — followed by the music’s abrupt return — shows us the evolution of his emotions. His chance is gone, and now he is in an entirely different sort of encounter. The conversation ends with one of the best lines of dialogue in modern film history, accompanied by a powerful orchestral swell. We can feel all of the justice and rage inside of Maximus — it's a goosebump-inducing moment, and it would fall flat without Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard’s musical genius.

How Background Music Benefits Content Creators

Of course, it’s easy to see how good music can really benefit a multi-million dollar film production.

But how does that translate to indie films, or wedding videos, or YouTube content? Can something like royalty free background music for videos replace a Hans Zimmer score and bring the same kind of emotional impact?

That’s a complicated question, but the short answer is “Yes.”

It isn’t all about the production budget. That is a lasting truth about all forms of creativity, and music for video is no exception.

The right music at exactly the right moment can change everything. Your song choice can ramp up the spookiness, supercharge a love scene, or force viewers to catch their breath when a chase scene culminates in a life-or-death fight.

The important thing isn’t paying thousands (or tens of thousands ) of dollars to have a famous composer write music for your videos. Instead, it’s more important that you focus on finding music that fits the mood or tone you want to build.

Context is everything, and background music is a valuable building block. We started this conversation off talking about storytelling and how content creation is an art unto itself.

But part of doing either well — creating art or telling a story — is knowing how to combine different components into a single entity. When the sensory content and the emotional context come together, it’s something even the most skeptical viewer will connect with.

Music is just one of the layers of a larger final product. And while researchers are constantly exploring just how deeply music can affect us , you don’t need a scientific journal to tell you that certain songs change your emotions just as easily as physical stimuli.

That’s something we’ve all experienced firsthand, and that helps us appreciate the value of choosing the right music for video projects.

The Ins And Outs Of Music Licensing

Unfortunately, almost every song in the world — including the best background music for video — is copyrighted.

“Copyright” isn’t some kind of villain, hoarding all of the best stuff behind a paywall just to be a jerk. But this system does create a set of rules and processes that creatives must follow in order to get access to any song.

Think of it this way: You wouldn’t want someone else to use pieces of your video content to promote their channel or product. And if they did reach out and ask permission, you would have a lot of questions (and probably expect to get a cut of the profits).

Similarly, music copyright is a system that was created to protect artists and musicians and make sure that they are compensated any time someone uses one of their songs.

Obtaining the license to use copyrighted music can be time-consuming, expensive, and confusing. An individual song isn’t owned by just one person — rights are often split up between the songwriter, performing artist, record label, and more.

And to actually become legally cleared to use a song, you need permission from every single person with a claim of ownership. If even one copyright holder turns down your request, then none of the other responses matter. Unless everyone agrees, you can’t use the song. Period.

Getting Familiar With Music Royalties

Here’s a hypothetical situation. As a content creator, you come up with a clever video concept. You spend a few days filming it, another few days editing it, and then find the perfect background music — it’s a song that hits all the right emotions at all the right times.

Then, as an expert on music licensing, you reached out to all of the song’s copyright holders. It took a few months (and a few thousand dollars) before they all got back to you, but that’s okay. You know this is the video that is going to make your channel launch into the YouTube content creator stratosphere.

Now let’s say your request to license a song is approved. You’ve dealt with the copyright stuff and now you’re ready to drop the music into your timeline and finally upload the video.

But there’s one more step to think about.

Another big part of music licensing is royalties. This is the part where you share a cut of the revenue with the copyright holders. Sure, you paid them up front for the music license, but they will also be entitled to a form of profit sharing in the form of recurring royalty fees.

Is your video a commercial project? Will it be placed on a monetized channel or platform? Does it contribute to you (or someone else) generating income? If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes,” then the copyright holders may expect a piece of that revenue.

This will be part of the music licensing agreement, so it shouldn’t come as an unpleasant surprise later on. But it is a regular part of the copyright process, and it’s something everyone has to deal with, from filmmakers to ad agencies to your local café that plays music 24/7.

Copyright law is the process for protecting someone’s intellectual property; royalties are how they get paid for the success of their song. It’s not that different from a professional athlete, who receives a contract signing bonus as well as a weekly (or per match) salary.

These are two sides of the same coin, and it’s a coin that you’ll get to become very familiar with the longer you are in the business of creating video content.

Where To Get Royalty Free Background Music For Videos

There is no way around music licensing (unless you write all your own music). But there is an easier, faster, and cheaper way to get access to songs that you can use in your videos.

That’s where royalty free music steps in to save the day.

The easiest way to think about royalty free music is like stock footage. A company like Soundstripe will partner with a musician and negotiate the rights to a song. (In our case, we own 100% of our library.)

And because Soundstripe owns the rights to that music, we are able to license that song out to filmmakers, YouTubers, and other content creators.

More importantly, because we own the music, we can license it out for much cheaper than a traditional record label would.

Royalty free music is not a loophole or some sneaky way to cheat the system. It’s a growing industry, and a way for people to get quality background music for videos at a cheaper cost.

We own every song, which means we don’t have to charge you any royalty fees. And instead of paying $60 or more for a single-use song license, you join a subscription program and get unlimited downloads from our library. No hidden fees or charges, and every song you license will be covered forever.

When it comes to finding great music for your next project, we’ve got a library full of radio-quality songs that you can license. And yes, since we hyped up background music, there are entire playlists of royalty free background music for videos just waiting for you to discover.

Great music has the power to capture the interest of your viewers in an iron grip. And at Soundstripe we offer the highest quality music for video creators. All that’s left is for you to start exploring our library and hear how a Soundstripe subscription can help you take your content to the next level.

And we want to start with The Sonics!

1. Have Love, Will Travel – The Sonics

The Sonics’ “have love, will travel” is one of my favorite travel music.

Have love, whoa Baby I will travel (I say)Have little love, whoa Darlin’ will travel (Isaid) If you need lovin Then yeah, yeah, Ill travel

Well I might take a boat, or I’ll take a plane Might hitchhike, or jump a railroad train Your kind of lovin’ drives a man insane So look for me a walkin’ just any ol’ way

2.  The House of the Rising Sun – The Animals

There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I’m one

My mother was a tailor She sewed my new bluejeans My father was a gamblin’ man Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and trunk And the only time he’s satisfied Is when he’s on, a drunk

3. KONGOS – Traveling On

So long my friend, my foe, my love, my pain The road’s calling out my name Dreaming of La Boheme Maybe I’ll go to Barbizon Or see a girl before she catches cold and she’s gone Or maybe I’ll just travel on

So long my flame, my warmth, my fear, my fight The road’s calling again tonight Dreaming under street lights Maybe I’ll catch a train to Rome See the world until I can’t go on Then maybe I’ll come traveling home

4. KONGOS – Escape

Every few thousand years Come true man’s greatest fears All the living things Mother nature brings to tears When the bombs are bursting in the air And the rockets are making that red glare I’m heading down Down to that good hope town, where the weather’s fair

So why don’t you come away With me my love We’ll do what it takes I’ll keep you safe

Why don’t you stay by me And when the time comes We’ll escape

5. Angus & Julia Stone – A Heartbreak

I saw your friends at the drive-in They were falling in love I met your friends, they were lying About falling in love

Girl, you’re just a child A heartbreak Girl, you’re just a child A heartbreak

I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

20. Jake Bugg – Simple As This

Traveled to each ocean’s end Saw all seven wonders, trying to make some sense Memorized the mantra Confucius said But it only let me down

21. Birdy – Wings

Sunlight comes creeping in Illuminates our skin We watch the day go by Stories of all we did It made me think of you It made me think of you

32. Guaranteed – Eddie Vedder

On bended knee is no way to be free Lifting up an empty cup I ask silently That all my destinations will accept the one that’s me So I can breath

Circles they grow and they swallow people whole Half their lives they say goodnight to wive’s they’ll never know Got a mind full of questions and a teacher in my soul So it goes

Don’t come closer or I’ll have to go Holding me like gravity are places that pull If ever there was someone to keep me at home It would be you

Everyone I come across in cages they bought They think of me and my wandering But I’m never what they thought Got my indignation but I’m pure in all my thoughts

I’m alive Wind in my hair, I feel part of everywhere Underneath my being is a road that disappeared Late at night I hear the trees

They’re singing with the dead Overhead Leave it to me as I find a way to be Consider me a satellite for ever orbiting

I knew all the rules but the rules did not know me Guaranteed

Is it Illegal to Download Music for Personal Use?

The legal status of downloading music for personal use can be complex and depends on your location's specific copyright laws. Generally, downloading copyrighted music without permission from the copyright holder is considered copyright infringement. Here are some situations where using YouTube content might require permission.

  • Embed downloaded music. Embedding downloaded music directly into websites, presentations, or social media posts can be a copyright issue.
  • Use downloaded music in mobile apps. The distribution of the app itself would be considered a form of unauthorized distribution of the music.
  • Broadcast downloaded music. Streaming or broadcasting downloaded music through online radio stations, podcasts, or similar platforms is illegal. Rip music from copyrighted sources. The act of downloading music from sources that don't have permission to distribute it (like certain file-sharing websites) can be considered copyright infringement in itself.
  • Download music with malicious intent. Downloading YouTube music to harm the copyright holder, such as to distribute malware or disrupt their online presence, is a serious offense.

35 things to do on your iPhone before going on a vacation

Discover 35 essential iPhone tasks to prep for your vacation, from organizing travel docs to downloading offline maps, ensuring a stress-free getaway.

Vacation Countdown on iPhone

The tips here are in no particular order. So, I’d recommend checking them all out, even though I understand you may not need to follow everything.

Scan copies of important travel documents

Scanning document in iPad Notes app

While most things like flight and hotel bookings have gone digital, I recommend saving your ID cards, credit card pictures, passport, and all other documents in scanned form on your iPhone. You can use Apple Notes , Files , or even Google Drive to scan and store them . This will serve as a helpful backup in unfortunate situations.

Take screenshots

You may have no Internet when you arrive at a new location. So, take normal or full-page screenshots of your digital bookings like flight, hotel, and other things. You can even put them all in an album to easily find them.

Share important files with your family members

If you’re going with a group, consider sharing the screenshots and digitally scanned copies of essential documents like hotel address or booking ID with all the members. You can share them through iCloud Drive , Google Drive, Dropbox, or a group chat.

Set up a group chat

This will help all members communicate effortlessly, even if you all are scattered around.

Learn how to use your iPhone to translate

Translating using iPhone Action button

If you’re going to a place where the local language is different, then take a moment to learn how to use the Apple Translate app . It also has an offline mode . However, its list of supported languages is not very comprehensive, so set up Google Translate as well.

Additionally, you can use your iPhone 15’s Action button to translate and converse effortlessly.

On the topic of translation, you should know that the local websites of the new place may not be in English. So, learning how to translate words, sentences, and web pages in Safari can be helpful.

Set up your Medical ID

Medical ID on iPhone

Since you’re going to a new place, it’s strongly recommended that you add essential information like your details, blood type, allergies, and such to your digital Medical ID in the iPhone Health app . This information is accessible even on the iPhone Lock Screen and can be life-saving.

Add your emergency contacts

While we’re on the subject of unfortunate situations, it’s important that you add your emergency contacts to your iPhone .

Track fellow traveler’s location at all times

Family Location Sharing on iPhone

You can make your vacation stress-free by setting up 24×7 location sharing for all your friends or family members . After this, everyone can see each other’s location.

Make a checklist

Use the Notes or Reminders app to create a to-do list of things you must pack in your bag, what you plan on doing, and more. It’s good to have everything noted for reference.

Make sure Find My iPhone is enabled

Play sound and get directions to track and recover your lost iPhone

Losing or misplacing your iPhone in a new location can be devastating. So, go to iPhone Settings > your name and make sure Find My is enabled . This will let you see your phone’s location , play a sound on it, and get directions to reach it. You can even use a family member’s or friend’s iPhone to find your misplaced device .

Set up your AirTags and share them with family members

Shared AirTag in Find My app on iPhone

If you plan on keeping an AirTag in your travel bags or purse, make sure that AirTag is set up and shows in your iPhone’s Find My app. You can even share the AirTag with up to five family members so they all can see its location.

Turn on Stolen Device Protection

Stolen Device Protection adds an extra layer of security and privacy, and you should enable it even for regular use.

Figure out the SIM situation

If you’re going on an international trip, you must make sure with your carrier that you have a supported plan that works in that country.

Secondly, if you’re planning on getting a local SIM, you must ensure that the carrier supports eSIM , as iPhone 14 and newer sold in the United States do not have a physical SIM slot.

Turn on data-saving modes

Roaming cellular data or inflight Wi-Fi packs are not only expensive but come with limited data allowance. So, learn about some tips to use as little cellular data as possible .

Get your travel apps in order

It can be helpful to download and set up your airline, train, and other such apps beforehand. For instance, the Flighty app can show you your gate number, alert you of possible delays, and more.

Install and sign up for local cab, payment, food, hotel, messaging, and other such apps

The apps you’re used to in your city or country may not work where you’re going for a vacation. So, it’d be wise to research online and see which apps are popularly used there. You can download and set them up beforehand to avoid expensive data costs and also save time.

Download offline maps

iPhone screenshot showing the notification when a downloaded map is ready for offline use

Save offline maps in Apple Maps or Google Maps for places you are about to visit. This will ensure you are not lost even if you don’t have cellular connectivity.

Download music, podcasts, movies, TV shows, books, and web articles

Go to the media app of your choice to save songs and movies for offline playback. You can also download books in the Apple Books app or the Kindle app. And if there are some web articles that you need to read on the flight, you can save them to your offline Reading List in Safari .

Tip:  Save YouTube videos of local places of attraction, tutorials, and such for reference.

Set an automatic email reply or Slack status

While I do not recommend replying to work messages during a vacation, you should, however, set up an automatic email reply or put a Slack status so your colleagues know you’re unavailable.

Set up a dedicated vacation Focus mode

Go to iPhone  Settings  >  Focus and set up a customized Focus for the holiday. You can choose to get notified only from certain apps and people during this time. However, I would recommend going easy on who can call you. You can even set it to  Everybody . This way, you won’t miss calls from local drivers, hotel staff, and such.

Force your iPhone to always stay in Low Power Mode

Keeping your phone in Low Power Mode will help if your vacation itinerary involves staying outdoors, away from a charger.

Make sure your smart Home accessories are working and can be controlled remotely

You may want to turn your house lights on and off remotely to give the impression that you are home and not away. Similarly, you may want to check your house cameras or locks even during a holiday. So make sure all these are set up properly, and they appear in the Home app on your iPhone.

Free up space for photos and videos

You’ll probably be taking lots of photos and videos on your holiday. So, make space on your iPhone to ensure a smooth experience.

Learn how to open the iPhone camera quickly

Quick Camera shortcut on iPhone Lock Screen

While we are on the subject of camera, it’d be helpful to know how to launch it instantly with one tap on the Lock Screen or a double tap on the back of your iPhone. This will ensure you don’t miss capturing a fun moment.

Set a default video recording resolution based on your needs

Go to iPhone  Settings  >  Camera  to set a default video quality resolution and frame rate . This will ensure you do not have to change it every time from the camera interface. I like to record at 1080p 60fps, but you can decide what works best for you.

Set up the Journal app

Apple’s Journal app can nudge you to write down your experiences and attach holiday pictures to your diary entry so you can keep a record and revisit them in the future.

Buy iPhone accessories

Using iPhone on a gimbal

Even if you do not use a case or screen protector, you may want to get one so that your phone is protected during vacation. Additionally, you may want to make sure you have a power bank and universal charging adapter .

Gimbal or selfie sticks are also popular with tourists who like to vlog.

So, decide what works for you and buy them beforehand.

Your iPhone or iPad can work as a power bank

Charging Android phone with iPhone 15

If the need arises, you can charge another phone, AirPods, or Apple Watch using your iPhone 15 or a USB-C iPad .

Implement some battery-saving tips

You may not always have access to a power outlet, so invest in a power bank. And if carrying that everywhere is a chore, discover some battery-saving tips to ensure your iPhone runs longer on a single charge.

Install a VPN

VPN can be helpful when using unsecured Wi-Fi at public places such as airports, train stations, hotels, etc.

Learn about sharing MacBook’s Wi-Fi with your phone

Imagine your hotel’s Wi-Fi is not working, but there is an Ethernet port in your room. In this case, you can use your MacBook as a wireless router .

Turn on Dial Assist

Go to iPhone  Settings  >  Phone  and turn on  Dial Assist  so it can automatically use the correct prefix (local code) when you call a number. However, if the calls fail, try turning it off.

Use a countdown app

You can use widgets from the Countdown app to keep track of the number of days remaining in your vacation and other related information.

Learn about iPhone alarms

You may have to wake up at odd hours to catch a plane or reach the bus, so it will help to know how to set an alarm on your iPhone .

Create a Home Screen page with all essential apps

You can create a Home Screen with all the essential travel apps and widgets, so it’s quick and easy to launch them when needed.

Bonus: Some privacy and safety tips

Face ID blocked on iPhone

Finally, here are some tips to ensure a safe experience:

  • Remember that you can discreetly disable the Face ID or Touch ID to prevent your iPhone from being unlocked forcefully.
  • Protect your privacy by not sharing your vacation plans beforehand on social media. Don’t check your location on your social profile. These will ensure thieves or other nefarious people do not know you will be away from your house.
  • Do not share photos of your passport or flight tickets on social media. And if you must, make sure to blur, hide, or pixelate all sensitive information .
  • Share your vacation photos only after you return from your vacation.
  • You can also choose to remove the photo metadata like location before sending vacation images via email, messages, etc.

Happy holidays!

Whether your friends are using the desktop app, are out and about on the mobile app, or are also console gamers, you can chat with ‘em from your PlayStation 5 whenever you want. Peek at our blog post for all the info.

New Music & Game Activities

We recently added a handful of new Activities to check out: Rythm and TuneIn Radio & Podcasts let you listen to your favorite music directly in chat, while BOPZ.io and Death by AI bring two unique takes on surviving a really really long time.

Already chilling in voice and don’t know what to play? Hover over to the Rocketship button and you’ll see some recommended Activities to try out.

A smartphone prominently displays the App Launcher icon, which is four different shapes aligned in a 2x2 grid. Images of headphones, paintbrushes, and swords float around the phone.

Use the App Launcher on mobile or the ‘+’ button on desktop in any text conversation to get goin’!

Mobile Touch-Ups & More Colorful Uploads

We’ve been working on refining the mobile app based on everyone’s feedback. Some of the changes include merging Servers and DMs into one “Home” tab, improvements to mobile search, and new Contrast and Saturation sliders to make Discord feel a little bit cozier to use.

For artists and photographers who share their artwork on Discord, big news: we improved how we preserve color profile data when images are uploaded to chat , meaning your colors will POP way more and look closer to how they did when you created your masterpiece.

Our latest Patch Notes has a more technical explanation of what’s preserved, along with a lot more fixes!

How to unlock new experiences on your Copilot+ PC

  • Nicci Trovinger

Copilot+ PCs are our fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever and are generally available beginning today, June 18. Today, we’re excited to share more information about our new advanced AI experiences that enable you to do things you can’t on any other PC, helping you be more productive, creative and communicate more effectively. These experiences are only available on new Copilot+ PCs.

Everyone has an imagination and the ability to be an artist. Now, with Cocreator you can enter a text prompt and start drawing on the Paint canvas, and Cocreator will generate beautiful artwork based on your input as you draw. Powerful AI cocreates alongside you, helping you bring your ideas to life. As you edit, it responds, evolving in near real time. Adjust the creativity slider to get more or less assistance from AI to modify your image. Or even apply one of the available style filters like Watercolor or Oil Painting to style your image. Without token limits or additional subscription fees, you can create without limits.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Launch: Search for and open the Paint application in the Taskbar, Start Menu or app list. If you do not see it, you can download it from the Microsoft Store. When the application opens, click on the Cocreator icon on the top right side of the in-app toolbar to open the experience. If you do not see the Cocreator icon, the Paint application may need an update. To get the update, select “Get updates” in Microsoft Store > Library.
  • Sign in: You’ll be prompted to login with your Microsoft account. This helps ensure that images follow our responsible AI (RAI) and security guidelines .
  • Start by entering a text prompt in the box that asks you to describe what you’d like to create. Need some ideas? Try, “a mountainous valley of wildflowers,” “a city skyline at sunset,” or even, “a sea turtle over a coral reef” to make beautiful pictures. [1]
  • Start drawing on the canvas with your mouse, pen or touch [2] to begin making your art and watch as the image adjusts to your input in near real time.
  • You can use any tools or colors you want. For best results, use the colors you desire in the output, broader brush strokes and fill up the canvas as much as you can.
  • Adjust the Creativity level by moving the slider. Lower creativity means less AI input and the output will be closer to your sketch. Higher creativity means more AI input and the output will be more imaginative and diverse.
  • Or select a Style option from the drop-down menu. You can choose art styles like watercolor and oil painting to customize the artwork you create.
  • When you are satisfied with your artwork, simply click the generated image in the side pane to apply it to the Paint canvas. You could add additional detail to your text prompt, like adding a butterfly to your landscape or a starfish to your underwater scene to continue evolving your image.
  • Be sure to save your favorite images to use where you need them by selecting File > Save or using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S.
  • For more information on Cocreator in Paint , visit the Microsoft Support page.

AI meets your images

Restyle image.

Reimagine your personal photos to combine image generation and photo editing into one powerful tool with Restyle Image. Use pre-set styles like Cyberpunk or Pixel art to modify the entire feel of the picture.

  • Launch: Open the Photos app by searching for “Photos” in Start or selecting it from your applications list. Don’t see it? Search “Microsoft Photos” in the Microsoft Store.
  • Sign in: You’ll be prompted to login with your Microsoft account. This helps ensure that images follow our responsible AI (RAI) and security guidelines.
  • Select and open an image you want to edit and above the image, select Restyle Image to surface the tools.
  • Describe a style you would like to apply using your words in the text prompt box and click Send. [2] Try, “An abstract expressionist art style, characterized by spontaneous gestural brushwork.”
  • Or, you can select from a preset style, including Fantasy, Anime, Surrealism, Impressionism, Cyberpunk, Renaissance, Watercolor, Papercraft or Pixel art.
  • You can choose to apply the effects to either the foreground, the background or the entire image.
  • Continue editing until the image is just right. There are no token limits so you can adjust and explore without limits..
  • When you are ready to save, select Save options at the top to come back to your photo any time you need.
  • For more information on Windows Photos Restyle Image and Image Creator , visit the Microsoft Support page.

Image Creator

Looking for visual inspiration or want to explore a variety of ways to express the same image concept? Image Creator in Photos generates endless images for free, fast, with the ability to fine-tune images to your liking. You can also save your favorite images or collections to come back to whenever you need them.

  • Launch: Open the Photos app by searching for “Photos” in Start or selecting it from your applications list. Don’t see it? Search for “Microsoft Photos” in the Microsoft Store.
  • Select Image Creator from the menu of options on the left side.
  • Select one of the preset options like Dessert ideas or Sci-fi book covers to apply the text prompt.
  • Or, you can describe the image that you would like to create. You can be as specific as you like. Need some ideas? Try, “living room, mid-century, neutral colors,” or “floral tablescapes for a wedding, soft pastel, neutral background, in a romantic style.” [2]
  • Watch as 20 different images generate to give you a range of options or inspiration.
  • Need more ideas? Keep scrolling and more will generate. Use the creativity slider to generate new variations, apply filters or modify your prompt by adding additional words to continue evolving your responses.
  • See an image or series of images you like? Select the image, right click and save or hover over the image and click on the save icon so you can use it or come back to it whenever you need.

Live Captions

In an increasingly connected and global world, Windows wants to bring people closer together. Live Captions now has live translations and can turn any audio that passes through your PC, including video calls and streaming content, into a consistent, English-language caption experience. Translations occur in real time and display consistently across applications, even when you’re offline. Currently it is available to translate from 44 languages into English subtitles. [3]

  • Launch: Click on Quick Settings from your taskbar and scroll to select and turn on Live Captions. Or, open Settings > Accessibility > Captions > Toggle on Live Captions. You will be asked to select yes to agree to allow Microsoft to process your voice data on your device and to download the Live Captions language files when necessary.
  • Listening to your favorite podcast, watching your favorite films or viewing global sporting events spoken in non-English languages to instantly follow along with English captions.
  • Have a call with family, friends or teammates around the globe. After turning on Live Captions, invite them to speak in different languages and see their words instantly translated into English captions.
  • Move the captions box to a new place on your screen by clicking and dragging to a new location or by selecting the Settings icon and selecting a fixed location above screen, below screen or overlaid on screen.
  • Make the captions box bigger by resizing the box to see more words.
  • For more information on Live Captions , visit the Microsoft Support page.

Windows Studio Effects

Windows Studio Effects just got better with more effects to help you look and sound your best whether it be on a video conference call or recording video or audio content for your creative pursuits.

  • Launch: Windows Studio Effects are easily accessible by selecting Quick Settings from your Taskbar and then choosing which effects you would like applied in the Quick Settings dropdown. You can see a preview of the effect by checking the box and can even select multiple effects to use simultaneously.
  • Selecting portrait light which automatically adjusts the image to improve your perceived illumination in a dark environment or brighten the foreground pixels when in a low-light environment. If you are in a room with natural lighting that gets brighter or darker throughout the day, watch as your lighting adjusts with you.
  • Applying creative filters (illustrated, animated or watercolor) create artistic flair, for a fun way to apply a stylized look to your video image.
  • Need to read a reference document while making a presentation on a video call? Try eye contact: teleprompter which helps you maintain eye contact with your audience while you read on your screen.
  • Portrait blur has new enhancements, helping to keep the focus on you and not your background.
  • In a noisy space and want to be heard more clearly? Select voice focus, now with new enhancements, to keep your voice, not the background noise, in focus.
  • For more information on Windows Studio Effects , visit the Microsoft Support page.

Recall instantly

We aimed to solve one of the most common frustrations with using your PC – finding something you know you have seen on your PC but not remembering how to get back to it. Recall is a preview experience that will be available in the coming weeks in the Windows Insider Program (WIP). Coming soon with Recall (in preview), you can find that content and then re-engage with it [4] . Windows will save snapshots of your active screen periodically, as frequently as every 3-5 seconds. With Recall you can then easily find your snapshots and re-open a document, get to the right webpage, or highlight and copy images or text using screenray to use across other applications. [5]   And, you’re always in control of your privacy with built-in controls that help you pause, delete or prevent web sites and apps from being saved in in your snapshots. Recall requires opt in to begin saving your snapshots; you can change your selection at any time, and Microsoft does not have access to your snapshots.

Here’s how to get started.

  • Opt-in: For Recall to save your snapshots, you need to opt in to the experience. You can do this by clicking “save snapshots” in the out of box experience during device set up. You can also navigate to the Settings application > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots > turn snapshots toggle on if you do not opt in during device set up. You can change this selection at any time.
  • Come back: We recommend trying out some of the other new experiences or spending a little time using your PC first before exploring Recall. That way you have snapshots available to search for, discover and interact with.
  • Launch: Open Recall either by clicking on the Recall icon on the center of your taskbar or by searching for Recall in the Start menu. You’ll be asked to authenticate using Windows Hello to launch the experience and proof of presence is also required to view your timeline and search in Recall.
  • Start by trying to find something you know you’ve seen before. Type the clues you remember in the search box using descriptive words. Or use voice to search by clicking the microphone icon in the search box. You can search using words, visual descriptors, colors, dates or even names and it will return both text and visual matches for the words you described. For example, if you created a picture of a landscape in Cocreator, just describe what you drew or a color that stands out from your picture. Try finding a document by searching for something you remember about it or something in the document that you remember seeing instead of what the file was called.
  • You can scroll back across your timeline by dragging your cursor across the timeline and finding a snapshot to return to.
  • Select a snapshot and see screenray in action, illuminating content in the snapshot you can act on as you hover. It analyzes the content to give you selectable images and text. Right click to copy the objects or open in another relevant application to quickly get to work.
  • Use the reopen action below the snapshot to get back to your original content (website, document, application) and pick up where you left off.

Adjust your privacy & security

  • When Recall is running on your PC, you will see a Recall icon on the System Tray alerting you when snapshot recording is in process.
  • When you want to pause or change your snapshot privacy settings, you can easily do so by clicking on the Recall icon in the System Tray. You can simply click to pause snapshots until the next day or to open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots where you have additional controls.
  • Turn off save for snapshots, change your storage configuration, delete your snapshots or set specific application or website filters with easy-to-use controls in Settings.
  • Turn on InPrivate browsing within Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers to prevent browser content from saving in your snapshots from within the browser’s Settings.
  • We have added additional layers of data protection including “just in time” decryption, protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) so Recall snapshots will only be decrypted and accessible when you authenticate. In addition, we encrypted the search index database.
  • Microsoft provides many built-in security features from the chip to the cloud to protect Recall content. All Copilot+ PCs are Secured-core PCs, come with the Microsoft Pluton security processor enabled by default, and include Windows Hello ESS.
  • For additional information on Recall Privacy see our support pages on Privacy , on how to use and how to manage for your organization .

We hope you enjoy these experiences and encourage you to tell us about your experience providing comments or suggestions via the Feedback Hub app. These experiences begin to be available on June 18 on Copilot+ PCs. Visit your local Microsoft Store or Microsoft.com to experience the update and learn more.
