This area is the native homeland of the Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw indigenous people. White settlers began arriving in the mid-1800s and the U.S. military forcibly removed the tribes to coastal reservations.
Reedsport began as a camp for railroad workers and was founded in the early 1900s by local landowner Warren Reed. The town’s early economy relied on commercial salmon fishing, logging and farming.
With decline of the lumber industry in the late 1990s, the large paper mill in nearby Gardiner shut down and more than 700 jobs were lost. Today, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is headquartered in Reedsport and tourism is growing in the area. The town has a population of a little over 4,000 residents.
Top Things to Do in Reedsport, Oregon
Explore the oregon dunes.
Reedsport is the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, one of the largest expanses of coastal sand dunes in the world, stretching 40 miles south from Florence to Coos Bay.
The shifting sands of this unusual environment inspired Frank Herbert’s novel and the movie Dune and results from millions of years of erosion along the coastline. It includes an incredibly diverse ecosystem of enormous sand dunes, wetlands, freshwater lakes, coastal forests, tree islands and beaches.
Some dunes reach heights of up to 500 feet above sea level and adventure-seekers can explore them in a variety of fun ways. All-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding is one of the most popular things to do in Reedsport and several local companies offer dune buggy rentals and tours .
Visitors also come for other outdoor activities like sandboarding, sledding, hiking, fishing, paddling, swimming, horseback riding, biking, wildlife viewing, birding, picnicking and camping (more on campgrounds below).

Take a Scenic Drive to See the Elk
Coming into Reedsport from the north on highway 101, you’ll cross the Umpqua River Bridge, a swing-span bridge designed by Oregon bridgemaster Conde B. McCullough.
Take the exit for route 38 east and follow the Umpqua River scenic corridor to the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area .
A year-round resident herd of 60-100 Roosevelt elk can be seen grazing nearly every day from the main viewing area. There are several pull-outs along the highway where you can stop to take photos.
Go Crabbing, Clamming or Fishing near Reedsport
West of Reedsport, Winchester Bay is a nearby unincorporated community on the Oregon Coast with a few restaurants, bait shops and many RV parks centered around Salmon Harbor.

Fishing and clamming opportunities are also abundant in the area and according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, clam populations in this area are “among the highest in the state, and they are big clams.”
Find more information on fishing, crabbing and clamming from ODFW .
Paddle the Lower Umpqua River
The lower Umpqua River estuary and adjoining Smith River provide excellent kayaking and paddling opportunities. Kayaks can launch from ramps in Winchester Bay, Reedsport and Gardiner.
Be aware of the strong tidal currents that influence both rivers, especially near the ocean and up to 30 miles inland. See South Coast Kayaking for more information.
Tour the Umpqua River Lighthouse
Near the mouth of the Umpqua River in Winchester Bay, the Umpqua River Lighthouse is still guiding ships safely into port with its distinctive red and white beams. Tours of the historic lighthouse and Coast Guard station are available year-round.

There are two low tides and two high tides every day on Oregon’s coast. Low tide is the time for beachcombing, clamming, tide pools and cave exploration.
For your safety, be aware of the tide schedule before boating or heading out to beaches and always keep an eye on the water level. Use extreme caution in rocky areas near the water, where sneaker waves can (and do) strike.
🌊 Check tide tables or ask at state park offices, local visitor information centers, stores or hotels for a free tide table booklet.
Because of the dunes, there aren’t many rocky areas for tide pools near Reedsport, but our tide pools guide will help you find the best tide pool spots on the Oregon Coast nearby.

Fun Things to Do in Reedsport on the Oregon Coast
Tiina A./FOAP/Getty Images
Reedsport is a small town on the Oregon Coast , located at the point where the Umpqua River flows into the Pacific. Reedsport is nicely situated in the midst of the famous Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area . These features combine to make Reedsport a scenic and fun place to visit and an access point to a broad range of outdoor recreation. Here are my picks for fun things to do in Reedsport, Oregon.
Umpqua Discovery Center
Reedsport's Umpqua Discovery Center is a little tricky to find but well worth a visit. The museum has two wings -- one devoted to the natural history of the region, the other devoted to the human history. All of the exhibits are well designed to appeal to both children and adults. The natural history section is a simulated hike called "Pathways To Discovery - Exploring Tidewater Country." The walls along the way are covered in exquisitely detailed murals containing the flora and fauna that call the area home. Interpretive signs, exhibits, drawers, and recordings are scattered along the route, filling you in on the local critters and landscape. Be sure to spend some time in the theatre "cave" to view one of the short films. The other section inside of the Umpqua Discovery Center is called "Tidewaters & Time." You'll take a walk through time, learning about the local human history and culture through a variety of sights and sounds. The Coastal Indian Tribes, early explorers, pioneers, loggers, fishermen, and early settlement are all covered. The center of the Umpqua Discovery Center contains a well-stocked gift shop that includes books, nautical items, gift items, and learning toys. The museum sits along the Umpqua River. Decks and boardwalks behind the center allow you to enjoy great views of Reedsport's bridges and estuarine environment. Take the stairs up to the viewing tower to extend your view.
Umpqua Lighthouse State Park
The charming Umpqua Lighthouse lies within a working U.S. Coast Guard facility and can be visited on a scheduled tour. Nearby you'll find the Coastal Visitor Center & Museum, located in the old Coast Guard Administration Building. The visitor center houses many interesting exhibits and artifacts related to the history of Coast Guard activities in the area. Umpqua Lighthouse State Park visitors can also enjoy camping, walking trails, whale watching, and picnicking.
Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area
You'll head east out of Reedsport on Highway 38 to get to the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, home of a resident herd of magnificent Roosevelt elk. The viewing area stretches along a 3-mile section of Oregon Highway 38, with two viewing areas and several observation pull-outs. The Dean Creek Elk outdoor interpretive exhibits allow you to learn more about the elk, as well as other local flora and fauna. Another BLM-operated recreation site, the O.H. Hinsdale Rhododendron Garden, is located on the other side of Highway 38.
Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center
Staffed by expert park rangers, the official visitor center for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is located right along Highway 101 in Reedsport. You'll be able to find out anything and everything you want to know about Oregon Dunes activities, as well as other local recreation and attractions. The Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center also has a few interpretive exhibits and a small bookstore.
