The Asheville Trolley Tour: Everything to know (2024)

A complete guide to the gray line trolley tour.

Welcome to our guide on the Asheville Trolley Tour ! While it’s officially the ‘Gray Line’ trolley, everyone here knows and loves it as THE trolley. I love spotting trolley tours when I am around town– and this happens a lot because the trolley stops all over the place.

This guide to the Asheville Trolley details stops, the schedule, pricing and more.

From experience, we highly recommend the trolley for both visitors and locals . It’s such a great way to explore Asheville and get the lay of the land. You’ll enjoy the sights, hop around as needed and also learn a little while doing so.

Asheville Visitor Center with a Gray Line Trolley in front

Not only is it a novel experience for kids (and people who used to be kids!), but it also takes away any worry about getting around the city or parking. You can just sit back and relax while seeing what the city has to offer. We love it so much that it’s on our list of favorite things to do in Asheville!

Asheville Trolley Schedule

Asheville trolley pricing, frequently asked questions about the asheville trolley, stops on the asheville trolley.

There are ten trolley stops total, taking you as far north as the Omni Grove Park Inn and as far south as Biltmore Village. The trolley tour officially starts in Montford at the Asheville Visitor Center , though, as the name implies, you can hop on anywhere!

Below you will details on the stops along with information about each area.

Trolley Stop 1: Asheville Visitor Center (Montford)

The Asheville Visitor Center is a great place to begin the tour if driving in because you’ll find free parking at the visitor center . You can also pick up local brochures and coupons, as well as get ideas for things to do from the volunteers there.

If you want to stroll a bit, head down Montford Ave to check out the magnificent historical homes on the tree-lined street. You can grab a coffee or bite to eat any time of the day at All Day Darling before heading back to the visitor center for your next trolley stop: The Omni Grove Park Inn .

Trolley Stop 2: Omni Grove Park Inn

What a stop! Whether you are checking in for the night or just want to soak up the view, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Omni Grove Park Inn.

There are restaurants on the premises (make sure to make a reservation), nearby galleries and even an antique car museum. Trolleying in is great because parking can be a bit tricky at times. Don’t miss the mega fireplaces and beautiful views.

Trolley Stop 3: Renaissance & Four Points Hotels in downtown Asheville

Downtown Asheville nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains

After your visit to the Omni Grove Park Inn, you’ll head south on the trolley to the downtown Asheville area. There are actually four stops downtown, so no need to hop off at the hotels unless you are staying at one.

You will get closer to downtown’s shops and restaurants on the next few stops. But bonus points for these hotels being on the tour! It definitely makes getting around the city easier when visiting.

Trolley Stop 4: Pack Square

Welcome to downtown Asheville! There are so many great local shops and eateries here. When the weather is nice you’ll also enjoy the sound of buskers.

The first stop downtown is at Pack Square. You’ll love this stop if French Broad Chocolate is on your must-visit list. And if it’s not, well, add it!

Exterior of French Broad Chocolate Lounge in downtown Asheville

The Pack Square stop is a great place to begin your downtown exploration. There is plenty within walking distance, including Stay Glazed Donuts (they are on our best donut shops in Asheville list !), The Rhu for a breakfast pastry or sandwich and Mast General Store for shopping.

Double D's Double Decker Coffee Bus

Stop by Double D’s Coffee if having coffee at the top of a parked double-decker bus is on your Asheville bucket list! And if it’s lunchtime and nice out, Salsa’s offers an exceptional meal with great patio seating in the alleyway.

Just across the street from Salsa’s you’ll find Kress Emporium , featuring the work of over 80 local artists. It’s a great spot for fun jewelry finds, art, candles and things you didn’t know you needed but can’t live without.

The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is just a few shops down from Kress. It’s a great stop if you are traveling with kids and need to give them time to burn off energy. You can read about our trip to AMOS with our two kids here !

There are two more stops downtown before the trolley heads to the River Arts District. You can either hop back on the trolley at the Pack Square stop or do a walking tour and meet it again at a stop further down the line.

Downtown is very walkable and you’ll pass by tons of great shops and restaurants if you walk to the next stop, including S&W Market .

The S&W Market

Exterior of the S&W Cafeteria Building

S&W is a food hall and taproom with several great restaurants to choose from. It’s a great stop for groups because everyone can grab their favorite type of food! We absolutely love getting chicken sandwiches from Buxton Chicken Palace and steamed buns from Bun Intended . Read more about the S&W Market here !

Trolley Stop 5: Haywood Park Hotel

If you decided to take the trolley from Pack Square instead of walking, you won’t go too far! The trolley stays downtown, stopping again at the Haywood Park Hotel . This is another area of town filled with shops, restaurants, coffee shops, dessert shops, galleries… ok, you get the picture. It’s also another great base for adventuring out.

Woolworth Building in Downtown Asheville

Don’t miss the Woolworth Walk just across from where the trolley stops. It’s a two-story art gallery and emporium, complete with a nostalgic vintage soda fountain and diner inside.

You’ll find Malaprop’s Book Store just down the way, which is locally owned and filled with great finds. We love their selection of kids’ books! There are also a ton of other local shops around here as well as the iconic flat iron sculpture.

If you haven’t stopped in Moonlight Makers yet, take a quick trip down the hill behind Malaprop’s to do so! We love this gift shop because there are so many great local Asheville finds, as well as punny screen printed shirts, dishtowels and bags, clever mugs, stickers and unique gifts.

Across from the Haywood Park Hotel stop is James Beard Award-winning restaurant Chai Pani . Expect excellent Indian street food and a cool vibe. It’s next to Kilwin’s if you are in need of fudge, ice cream or other sweet treats.

Trolley Stop 6: Grove Arcade

There’s one more stop downtown before the trolley heads to the River Arts District- and it’s a good one: The Grove Arcade.

The building itself is a work of architecture and the shops and restaurants are just as charming. Inside you’ll find tons of local stores, like Asheville NC Home Crafts and the Mission at the Grove . It’s a great place to find a souvenir or two.

Grove Arcade façade in downtown Asheville

There are several restaurants located at the Grove Arcade that have outdoor seating along Page Ave ( Modesto , Burgerworx and Carmel’s Kitchen .) You’ll find great food and excellent people-watching! One of our favorite spots to grab lunch at the Grove Arcade is the Middle Eastern grab-and-go Baba Nahm . You can order online and it’s always fresh and delicious.

Summit Coffee is also located in the Grove Arcade. They are a roaster out of Davidson, NC and have great blends that are always a part of our mornings at home! Oh, and don’t miss Battery Park Book Exchange ! It’s a great spot to grab a book, a latte or a glass of champagne if you’re feeling fancy.

This stop is just down from Haywood Park Hotel and you can easily walk between the two. No need to wait for the trolley to make your way to the Grove Arcade,

Ok, that’s it for downtown stops on the trolley! Next up is the River Arts District !

Trolley Stop 7: River Arts District (North)

The Asheville Trolley stops twice in the River Arts District (RAD), which is great because there are two distinct parts of it. It’s walkable, though, but just…. bring your walking shoes if you decide to do that instead of taking the trolley! We’ll highlight a few things about the RAD here, but if you want all the details then hop over to our full guide to the River Arts District !

The Hatchery building in the River Arts District with picnic tables in front of it for Baby Bull customers

The first stop in the RAD takes you to the northern part of the district. Here you’ll find one of my favorites to peek in and watch in awe: the North Carolina Glass Center . Not only can you catch a glimpse of what they have going on, but they also offer classes , like the 30-minute make-your-own ornament or paperweight class. And, of course, you can shop there too!

In addition to the glass center, there are a ton of other studios and galleries around. We love checking out the working Mark Bettis Studio Gallery . There you’ll find paintings, sculptures, glassworking and more. Close by is the Hofman Studios , an artist-owned pottery studio featuring handbuilt porcelain that use antique lace to create patterns. All of the pieces are just so beautiful and unique there. It’s a great place to grab a special souvenir.

Exterior of The Bull and Beggar at Wedge Studios

As far as eats and drinks go, Ultra Coffee has awesome coffee and breakfast sandwiches! The Bull and Beggar is also in this area, though it’s only open for dinner. Wedge Brewing Company has two locations in the RAD, one of which is in this area. They are open in the afternoons and feature a rotating list of food trucks. If you are looking for a grab-and-go lunch option, check in to the newly opened MOTHER Bread to see if they have a jambon beurre sandwich (ham and butter!) ready to go. They also make great pour-overs.

Explore a new area of the RAD

Now, here’s where you decide if you want to backtrack to take the trolley from where you were initially dropped off in the RAD or if you will continue your walking tour to another mini-part of the area. If you opt to walk, you’ll pass by several more studios and restaurants that you would otherwise miss. We recommend it if you have time!

Curve studios in the River Arts District

If you decide to explore, take a stroll down toward the Lyman St traffic circle. Take a right there to check out CURVE studios or continue straight to get to another set of studios and eats. Fresh Wood Fired Pizza , Grind AVL coffee shop and PennyCup Coffee are all located on the way. Psst: both coffee shops are on our best coffee shops in Asheville list ! The restaurant Vivian is also located here and is a great spot for dinner or brunch!

You’ll have to turn around to get to the next area of the RAD, and then you can either hop on the trolley to get to the next stop or walk. If you walk, take the traffic circle from Lyman Street toward Riverside Ave. There’s a river walk there that will take you down to the next area of the RAD. It would be fun on a really nice weather day to stretch your legs, but you may want to skip the walk and take the trolley back. Either way, next stop: River Arts District part 2!! 🙂

Trolley Stop 8: River Arts District (South)

This is such a fun stop on the Asheville Trolley! Here you’ll find art studios, eateries and a ton of large graffiti murals. Woodworking, glassworking, galleries, antique stores and even an indoor skatepark are all within walking distance.

cropped-Sign-Map-River-Arts-District-Asheville.jpg

Riverview Station is a large, two-story building that features the work of over 60 local artists, craftspeople and entrepreneurs. There you’ll find jewelry, paintings, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculptures and glass. Marquee is also a great stop for art, antiques, decor and jewelry. Marquee has grab-and-go food and a taproom!

The Summit Coffee Co building in the RAD

Speaking of eating, 12 Bones Smokehouse (ribs!!), Summit Coffee and Wedge Brewery ‘s second location are all located pretty close to one another in this area of the RAD. We love grabbing a beer at Wedge Brewery at Foundation and a burger from the Chop Shop food truck there. A+ beer, burgers and outdoor seating! Unlike the rotating food truck vendor list at Wedge Brewery at Wedge Studios (north RAD), their Foundation location features the Chop Shop’s truck daily. Further south, you’ll find Rosabees and Plēb Urban Winery .

Whew, what a day so far! Next up: Biltmore Village! Well, kind of….

Trolley Stop 9: DoubleTree Biltmore Village

No need to hop off at the DoubleTree stop unless you are staying at the property! I really do love that the trolley stops at several hotels along the way- it makes it so easy for visitors.

Trolley Stop 10: Biltmore Village

Alright so here’s the real stop for Biltmore Village. You’ll be dropped off right in front of the Olde World Christmas Shop , so be prepared to feel festive.

Outdoor seating at Well-Bred bakery in Biltmore Village

Biltmore Village is a historic area and just as charming as can be! It’s across from the Biltmore Estate entrance and was originally built to house the employees. Today it is full of shopping and dining opportunities. You’ll find everything from local shops like Dogwood Darlings Children’s Boutique and Provisions Mercantile to bigger stores like Williams-Sonoma and Lululemon . Finch and Well-Bred are both great places to pop in for an afternoon treat, and Cantina has excellent Mexican food!

That’s a wrap!

What a day! This is the last stop of the tour before the trolley heads back to the Asheville Visitor Center in Montford. And then you can do it all again!

Speaking of, did you know your ticket is good for TWO days on the trolley ? This is awesome if you missed something and want to circle back or maybe you just want to try different restaurants this time around. Having two days definitely takes the pressure off of needing to see it all the first time.

We hope you enjoy your trip on the trolley! See below for details on the trolley’s schedule, pricing and answers to a few things you may be wondering about the Asheville Trolley. Happy riding! 🙂

Our first driver/guide was Lynn whose family has been in Asheville for several generations. She had much to share about the town and its residents over the years. We rode the whole circuit with her to learn what was available at each stop before deciding where we wanted to get off and do more. Later we had David as our driver and were amused at how some of the stories/history changed when listening to his version. Both did a wonderful job of narrating the ride and keeping the riders interested and engaged. Read more Written April 10, 2024

What's a groovy tour?

A fun-filled vintage van ride, with expertly curated 60s and 70s music. You will travel in and around Downtown Asheville and based on passenger input we tailor the drive through varied sights and attractions, from the river Arts district, to Grove Park, to funky West Asheville, as well as the many beautiful (and hip!) neighborhoods adjacent to downtown.

Our History

Having lived and worked as a physical therapist in Asheville for 30 years, I found myself, like many other healthcare professionals, overwhelmed and “burning out” as the COVID 19 pandemic ravaged our community. Increasingly, I found myself waking up with the same thought, that I loved what I did but  that maybe it was someone else’s turn to take care of my patients. I decided to open up a new chapter in my life. The idea of operating a groovy bus tour business in Asheville wasn’t a new one, just one that I hadn’t given myself permission to explore as a real business. I think you can understand how “real life “ of kids, jobs, mortgages often put “dreams” on the back burner.

But I made a decision to follow this long held dream. My wife had seen me look at 1000s of VW buses for sale without buying one and heard endless stories of how much I loved driving the 1972 VW camper I had when the kids were young. Well I finally made the leap, bought a beautifully restored 1974 VW bus and now I am “all-in”.  The “destination” is to develop a successful business, but it’s the journey that lifts my soul everyday and that is everything to me at this point in my life. I am definitely “in the groove” and if you want that same groovy feeling, the Groovy Bus can take you there too..

Groovy Asheville Tours – What we strive for on every trip is simple….

Peace. Love. Music. Fun

  • We strive to help you find peace in in a sometimes hectic world
  • We strive to transport you to a place where you are embracing the moment with all its sights, sounds and emotions.
  • We want our music-filled bus to “let your soul and spirit fly, …..into the mystic” (props to Van Morrison!)
  • And most of all of our tours are about having FUN. So climb aboard the Groovy Bus!

Achieving a state of grooviness is definitely an “inside” job

It requires one to let go of non- groovy feelings and worries. That being said, being inside a vintage van, listening to groovy music, in the beautiful town of Asheville, will greatly improve your chances of finding your groovy self.

About Asheville

Your Guide to the Locally Loved

The Best Tours in Asheville, North Carolina

The 15 Fun and Unique Tours in Asheville, NC

Best Tours in Asheville, NC

I love taking tours when I travel, and I take tours at home when I’m not traveling! Joining tours to explore where you live is like having a special date with a loved one to connect deeper and feel more appreciation each time.

I consider myself an independent traveler, but I always include a dose of locally operated tours and experiences offered by locals to further explore whatever excites me the most about the destination.

Asheville is a small city with a population of less than 100,000 – but it has a lot to offer! From its architectural gems and exciting farm-to-table food movement and beer scene to its epic outdoors and talented artists, there is something for everyone here. Asheville is also full of projects, nonprofits, and businesses that form a support network for our underserved communities.

I’ve compiled a list of tours that reflect all aspects of Asheville’s identity. You’ll see options to explore our city’s history, outdoors , street art, food and beer scene , art shops, and our most famous buildings: The Biltmore House and the Omni Grove Park Inn. But no matter which type of tour you choose, you’re bound to walk away with a deeper understanding of this great city!

Don’t forget to check out our web story: The 15 Fun and Unique Tours in Asheville, NC

The Best Tours in Asheville, NC

1. get to know asheville’s landmarks by taking its most iconic tour.

Unique Tours in Asheville: LaZoom Comedy Tours

The purple buses of LaZoom Comedy Tours represent one of the best tours in Asheville and are a city landmark. The first thing I saw when I first visited Asheville from Argentina, looking for a new cool place to live in the United States, was a guy dressed as a nun, riding a bike, and angrily screaming at a purple bus. I instantly knew this was the place for our family to move next. My kids had to grow up near Sister Bad Habit!

These “historical and hysterical” multi-award-winning tours mix comedy, history, and partying on purple buses guided by eccentric characters. The locally owned and operated tour company was founded by two street performers 16 years ago and now offers four tours.

Fun Tours in Asheville: LaZoom Comedy Tours

“Hey Asheville” is a city tour and vaudeville on wheels. “Fender Bender” mixes live music on the bus and beer tasting, making an original, fun Asheville brewery tour. “Ghosted” offers a haunted comedy tour, and “Lil Boogers” is their kid-friendly option (the others have age limits, so please check ahead of time). All the tours are dog friendly!

2. See Asheville’s Top Attractions on the Gray Line Asheville Trolley

The Gray Line Asheville Trolley tour is one of the most popular Asheville tours, and for a good reason. It offers an excellent, award-winning Hop-On Hop-Off Tour that the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County has endorsed.

Visitors can listen to the live narration and get off the bus at one of the 10 stops (or all of them!) along the 15-mile route to experience Asheville’s breweries, shops, and the urban scene. Also, tickets are valid for two consecutive days!

This locally owned and operated business also offers a fun ghost tour, covering some of our most famous specters (we have plenty!), including the friendly Tim Burton-like ghost of the Pink Lady of the Grove Park Inn and the mystery of the Nazi agents based in Asheville.

The seasonal Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley Tour includes live music and Christmas caroling while driving past festive holiday decorations in downtown Asheville, Biltmore Village, and the Montford and Grove Park neighborhoods.

3. Explore Downtown on an Asheville Walking Tour

This self-guided Urban Trail Tour is a free audio tour offered by the City of Asheville and is a great way to get to know the city’s history at your own pace. It starts at Pack Place Park and follows 30 stations marked by cool sculptures.

AVL Free Walking Tours offers a tip-based Asheville walking tour that ends with a free scoop of ice cream at The Hop . Their haunted tour (not free) starts at the Riverside Cemetery in the historic district of Montford and goes all the way downtown. It’s the only ghost tour that covers this super interesting cemetery.

The Asheville Coffee Tour features six of Asheville’s best coffee and tea shops. It includes short stops at Asheville’s landmarks and lots of caffeine!

The Asheville Music History Walking Tour explores downtown through the stories of Asheville’s eclectic past and present music scene. It covers the Moogseum (which offers its own tour) and the famous venue The Orange Peel , among other local icons.

Did you know that the Jackson Building, the Battery Park Hotel, and a famous restaurant host ghosts? Last Halloween, my kids and I took the Haunted Asheville Ghost Tour , one of the best Asheville walking tours, and we enjoyed getting a glimpse of the city’s past through these dark stories.

4. Explore Downtown and Its Surroundings on Wheels

Winner of TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice Award, the Tukit Tour Co offers guided tours around downtown on environmentally-friendly, open-air six-seater electric tuk-tuks decorated with LED-lights and equipped with Bluetooth speakers and heated seats. They offer ready-to-go tours and private customized tours.

The Flying Bike provides electric bike tours around town. The Winter Warm Up E-Bike Tour is perfect for chilly days, and it includes stops at two local restaurants, hot cocoa, apple cider, and a visit to the historic Omni Grove Park Inn.

Asheville Adventure Company features a scenic Asheville e-bike sunset tour, perfect for photos all year round but especially in the fall. The e-bike tours are kid-friendly if you’re traveling with kids.

I’ve never taken a Segway tour, but I might because every time I see the Segway riders around my neighborhood, they look so content and relaxed. Moving Sidewalk Segway Tours offers a tour that covers downtown and other areas, like Montford and the greenways in North Asheville. The tour is 10 and up, and training is included!

5. Tour Downtown Asheville while Drinking and Pedaling on an Amazing Pubcycle

Must Try Tours in Asheville: Amazing Pubcycle

Amazing Pubcycle is one of the most trendy Asheville tours. The pedal-powered (motor-assisted) trolleys and their festive, laughing riders are becoming a happy downtown landmark.

The company offers different tours perfect for parties and celebrations, including fun bachelorette parties, but you can also book individual seats. Guests will bring their own and serve their own beer, wine, cider, or seltzer and drink it on a 15-person pedal trolley driven by a certified, funny, and charismatic tour guide.

Tours to Try in Asheville: Amazing Pubcycle

Clients are welcome to wear costumes and bring decorations to customize their ride, so you can imagine what a fun sight these bikes are. The most popular offer is the Pub Tour in downtown Asheville which stops at one of Asheville’s best pubs.

Also, they’re now offering a Trivia Tour on wheels! Riders have to be older than 12. There are 10 pedal seats and room for five non-pedalers. Yes, you do have to pedal, so enjoy your drink and your workout!

6. Embark on an Asheville Scavenger Hunt Tour

This is a fantastic plan for co-workers, friends, or family! Asheville Detours offers personalized team adventures that will bring you around downtown. You’ll follow clues like solving riddles and unscrambling letters while enjoying tasty treats and drinks and participating in fun group activities introducing you to some favorite local businesses.

Asheville Detours has four offerings, and they can all be customized according to your preferences: The Bachelorette Tour, the Authentic Asheville Detour, the Family Fun Detour, and the Team Building Detour. Each hunt is self-guided and lasts approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Some stops and treats include eating donuts at the beloved Stay Glazed, tasting honey at Asheville Bee Charmer, group crafting at Fired Up, beer and chocolate tastings, and a champagne toast and private tour at Momentum Gallery.

Also, are you looking for the perfect, most unique Asheville gift? They offer “Authentic Asheville” gift boxes featuring local products, an excellent way to keep spreading the love for local businesses!

7. Learn about Asheville’s African American Residents with this Award-Winning Tour

Must Try Tours in Asheville: Hood Huggers

In this context, Hood Huggers offers walking and driving tours that take visitors through the past and the present of African Americans in Asheville. This initiative won TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award.

Unique Tours in Asheville: Hood Huggers

These Asheville tours cover the history of these communities, current projects, and visions for the future. They are aimed at visitors and locals alike.

8. Get a Sugar High at French Broad Chocolate Company

Asheville, North Carolina Tours: French Broad Chocolate

French Broad Chocolate is one of Asheville’s favorite chocolate shops. Locals and visitors love stopping by the iconic blue building of the French Broad Chocolate Lounge in Pack Square and getting something sweet, from housemade bonbons and ice cream to cookies, cakes, and brownies, and a delicious selection of drinking chocolates.

All of the chocolate is made in their chocolate factory, and they offer a fantastic Bean to Bars Chocolate Factory Tour that covers an introduction to a cocoa farm, the company’s story, and an overview of the process of transforming cocoa beans into a chocolate bar. In addition, there are tastings of cacao in its different forms, including, of course, bonbons!

Unique Tours in Asheville: French Broad Chocolate

French Broad Chocolate also offers tastings, so please check their calendar to see if you can catch one of them. This is an excellent tour for kids. I did it with mine years ago. Children under 7 don’t have to pay for a ticket.

9. Explore the River’s Arts District’s Shops and Art Galleries

Tours to Try in Asheville: River's Arts District

There are about 200 studios in the 23 former industrial buildings along this one-mile stretch of the French Broad River called the River’s Arts District (RAD). There are different ways to explore this area, which is also home to excellent restaurants, cafés, and breweries.

Each Saturday, Mountain Mural Tours offers a popular street art tour that departs from the River’s Art District but also includes downtown and West Asheville. You’ll learn about Asheville’s history while seeing some fantastic local art. Your Instagram account will thank you for that photo of a gigantic Dolly Parton!

Asheville, North Carolina Tours: River's Arts District

Flying Bike Tours ‘ West Asheville River Arts District E-Bike Tour stops at some landmarks, including The Marquee, a design center where you’ll find pieces of art of all kinds, and The Peace Garden, an eclectic, beautiful community garden decorated with works from local artists using repurposed materials.

You’ll also love the free, tip-based walking tour offered by AVL Free Walking Tours and the concept of their photo stroll in the RAD, where you’ll relax while someone else takes care of the pictures in one of Asheville’s most photogenic neighborhoods.

On the second Saturday of the month , there are special events in the RAD and a free trolley to tour the shops.

10.  Splash Around in One of the Four Oldest Rivers In the World

Asheville (aka Beer City , USA) has more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States. With an average of 28.1 breweries per 100,000 residents and 100 local beers, it’s no wonder this city is a paradise for beer lovers worldwide.

Recognized by National Geographic and TripAdvisor, BREW-ed’s Brewery Tours offers one of the best Asheville brewery tours. These informative, educational walking tours are guided by Cicerone-certified guides.

These beer experts will take you to some of the best downtown breweries where, besides tasting the local crafts, you’ll learn about the process of making beer and how Asheville’s beer culture has evolved over the years.

Asheville Brews Cruise is Asheville’s original, 16-year-old brewery tour and promises “an ample amount of beer” in its walking and mobile tours. All tours are knowledge-based and include visits to three or four Asheville breweries, tasting samples, lots of information, and fun guides.

Guide to Visiting Biltmore Estate, Asheville NC: Things To Do & Tips!

One of our favorite getaways from Raleigh is to the opulent Biltmore Estate, also known as America’s largest home!

We love a stately home – they are a great way to gain an insight into the lifestyles of the wealthy and extravagant, as well as showcase some of the finest, classical architecture in the country.

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC is the castle of all castles. This French-chateaux-inspired mansion has 250 rooms and four floors and sits on a property that spans 8,000 acres (that’s 13 square miles – pretty big!)

If you’re thinking about taking a trip over to Biltmore Estate from Raleigh, then this guide is for you! We’ve shared some of the best things to do at Biltmore Estate, as well as shared some tips for visiting and where to stay nearby, so you can make the most of your visit.

About Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore Estate is nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains region, fairly close to Smoky Mountains National Park and only a 5-minute drive outside of Asheville.

This sprawling estate is the vision of George Washington Vanderbilt, a former railroad tycoon who famously turned $100 into $1000 million. His construction business made him one of the wealthiest men in the world in his prime, and of course, he built a home to showcase this.

Construction of the estate started in 1889 and was completed in 1895, taking six years to build. It was and still is regarded as America’s largest home.

Shortly after the completion of this French Renaissance château, he met his wife, Edith, who moved into the home and they had one child, Cornelia.

When George died in 1914, the ownership of the house went to his wife, and then his child. The lineage of the estate has stayed in the Vanderbilt family and is today owned by his great-grandson, Bill Cecil Jr.

What makes the Vanderbilt family unique is that although they were wealthy, they wanted to share what they had with the world, and from the moment the house was built they opened their doors to the community, hosting events throughout the year.

They also provided employment opportunities and gave their workers New York salaries, which uplifted the local community and contributed to the growth of nearby towns.

Biltmore Estate is more than an architectural marvel, but a work of art. It has been a registered National Historic Landmark since 1963.

How many days to see Biltmore Estate?

We recommend you allow at least 2 full days to explore Biltmore Estate. When you purchase an entrance ticket for Biltmore House, you receive free access to the grounds for the following day.

Most people take two days to explore the grounds and house, but nothing is stopping you from staying longer.

Ideally, three days would be better, as there are a lot of activities you can do there from clay shooting to craft workshops to Land Rover tours.

Any more than three days would be pushing it (and weighing heavily on your wallet).

Several people I’ve met have told me They’ll visit Biltmore on a day trip from Raleigh and have a great time. At a minimum three and a half hours drive from Raleigh one way, I personally would not visit on a day trip from Raleigh.

But, I have visited Biltmore in just one day before coming in from Asheville or Lake Lure. On those one-day visits, we tend to only fit in the house, gardens and wine tasting.

Things To Do At Biltmore Estate

1. tour the house.

Of course, the most important thing to do at Biltmore Estate is to explore the house and gardens. After all, this is what you come to see, right?

You can take a self-guided audio tour, which is included in your ticket price, or you can opt for a guided tour. It’s up to you how you do it, but make sure you book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, as it often sells out (and you make a saving by booking in advance).

The audio tour takes about 90 minutes and takes you through the most important rooms in the house (not all 250 are open to the public).

You’ll see the elegant and spacious banquet hall, entrance hall, winter garden, and breakfast room. You also get to visit George and Edith’s bedroom, which has been decorated in period furnishings and hosts displays of vintage clothing, art, and more.

As you wander through these grand rooms, the audio guide will narrate stories that illustrate the lives of the Vanderbilt family and the people around them.

The basement level is one of the most inspiring sections of the house. Here you can see the kitchen, staff quarters, laundry room, and other areas used by the workers of the house. It’s amazing to think what it would have looked like in the beginning.

After the tour, be sure to stop by the shops in the former Carriage Homes to pick up souvenirs or refreshments before exploring the grounds.

Always check the Biltmore schedule as they often have special exhibitions inside the house. We’ve visited before when they had a special Titanic the movie exhibition with costumes throughout the house and interesting pieces of information and connections between the settings of the movie and Biltmore.

2. Explore the Biltmore Estate Gardens

If you think the house is impressive, wait until you see the backyard! Standing on the verandah at the back of the house, you’ll be met with sprawling scenes of the Pisgah National Forest, which Vanderbilt strived to protect.

As well as wandering through the nature trails of the woodlands, take a couple of hours to wander through the former and informal gardens.

As with the house, Vanderbilt left no expense when it came to designing the gardens. They were designed by America’s foremost landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, and have been divided into several sections.

Be sure to visit the Italian garden, azalea garden, and shrub garden, and see the orchids in the spring garden conservatory. The rose garden is beautiful in the spring and has over 250 varieties of plants.

NOTE: I have just finished the Devil in the White City book which is all about Chicago’s World Fair in 1893. Olmsted was the landscape architect for the fair and they mention Biltmore House several times in the book, as he was working on Biltmore’s garden project at the same time.

3. Enjoy Complimentary Wine-Tasting

Did you know that Biltmore Winery is one of the most visited wineries in the USA? Well, now you do!

And the good news is, with your entrance ticket, you get free wine tasting of around 20 handcrafted wines from their vineyard, some of which have won awards.

For kids, they can have a complimentary grape juice, so they don’t miss out.

While I really enjoyed the wine tasting experience at Biltmore, and highly recommend you do it, Biltmore wine is not something I’d choose to drink outside of the estate. It’s really not too bad, but not my typical style. I would drink it again on my next visit though for sure!

4. Visit Antler Hill Village

Antler Hill Village is a tiny village set up on the estate where all the action is. It’s where you will find places to eat, The Creamery ice cream shop, stores, an Outdoor Adventure Center, and the winery.

When we last visited, there was even live music playing in the grassy area in the village.

Be sure to dine at one of Biltmore’s restaurants, which continue the legacy of Vinderbilt’s farm-to-table ethos and use herbs grown from the estate’s garden.

We ate at Village Social, which was more casual, but we heard good things about Cedric’s Tavern, which is a traditional, English-looking pub.

Don’t miss a chance to take the kids to the farmyard at Antler Hill Village to see the chickens and goats.

5. Go For a Hike Around The Deer Park Area

There are nearly 22 miles of hiking trails in the entire Biltmore Estate, so if you want to get out into nature and explore, you have a lot of areas to explore.

Head into the Deer Park Area and walk along the French Broad River, or traverse through the forests and open meadows.

Be sure to visit the Outdoor Adventure Center in Antler Hill Village for a detailed trail map.

6. Go Horseback Riding

If hiking 22 miles of trails sounds too daunting for you, then consider exploring the nature sites on horseback instead.

You can take a 1-hour, western-style guided ride through the woodlands and meadows of the estate, accompanied by an experienced guide.

There is a maximum of 10 people per horseback riding tour, so you can enjoy the quietness and ambiance of the forest without a huge tour group to spoil the atmosphere.

7. See the Chihuly Exhibit (April Only)

When we visited the Biltmore Estate back in 2014, we were lucky to see the work of American artist, David Chihuly.

Due to its popularity, it will be welcomed back this April 2024 for a limited time only and can also be observed intimately at a few formal dinner events.

David Chihuly is famous for his colorful glass sculptures, which will be displayed in front of the mansion as well as in the gardens.

We loved the bright colors and unique shapes of his sculptures, and highly recommend you go to check them out. It really made an already beautiful garden bloom with even more splendor. It made our list of spring break destinations from Raleigh.

8. Have Afternoon Tea at The Dining Room

What better way to experience the elegance and grandeur of this estate than by enjoying a traditional Afternoon Tea?

Vanderbilt often had a tradition of having afternoon tea with his guests, and the tradition lives on at the Inn on Biltmore Estate Dining Room, where tea is served with fresh-baked scones with clotted cream, honey, and jam.

You will also get a selection of sweet and savory canapés as well as a selection of sandwiches.

You can also have a tea-infused cocktail if you prefer to make it boozy.

Note that this is an “elegant attire” activity, and you won’t be allowed in if you rock up in shorts and sandals. Come wearing your best dress shirts and dresses.

9. Stay at The Inn at Biltmore Estate

The Inn at Biltmore Estate is a four-star luxury hotel on the property that continues that exuberant charm from the main mansion.

From the grandeur of the hotel foyer to the magnificent mountain views to the complimentary glasses of champagne on arrival – it’s luxury through and through.

All rooms are decorated in a period style close to Biltmore Mansion’s style, but still feel comfortable and elegant.

It’s expensive, but it’s well worth it for a special occasion.

You can read more about our stay at The Inn at Biltmore Estate here .

Opening Hours & Entrance Fees

The Biltmore Estate is open all year round, though hours of operation vary by season and differ for each shop and restaurant, so it’s best to check the website before visiting . The house is open from 8.30 am until around 5.00 pm.

As for admission, ticket prices vary depending on the time of year. The price of visiting in the winter starts at $75, and prices in Spring and Summer start at $80. All tickets allow access to explore the magnificent Biltmore House and its sprawling grounds.

If you are visiting during the Christmas period (Nov 2-Jan 5), prices start at $110. Visiting Biltmore Estate at Christmas to see the lights is a Christmas experience not to miss in NC !

Additional activities such as clay shooting, horseback riding, and other workshops and classes are additional to the ticket price.

Where To Stay When Visiting Biltmore Estate

Of course, there are places to stay on the Biltmore Estate which make a visit much easier. The Inn at Biltmore Estate is the most luxurious hotel on the grounds, as we mentioned earlier, but if you’re looking for something more modern, consider the following:

The Village Hotel

The Village Hotel is a newer hotel on the grounds and is of 3* quality. It has spacious and comfortable rooms, decorated in a more modern flare but still offers the warm hospitality that Biltmore is famous for.

The Cottages

There are also a couple of self-contained cottages on the estate that you can rent if you prefer a little more privacy and more amenities. You will need to book in advance for these though, as there is only a handful.

Hotel Indigo in Asheville

If you don’t want to stay on the grounds, we enjoyed our stay at Hotel Indigo in downtown Asheville . It’s a great location and has comfortable rooms.

Another option is to stay in Lake Lure, which is about an hour’s drive from Biltmore Estate. We love it there and if you’re planning to visit Asheville for 2+ days , consider making a stop by. We have a guide on our ytravelblog.com site on why we love Lake Lure and what to do there.

Tips for Visiting Biltmore Estate

To make the most of your trip, here are some words of advice…

  • Get there early to avoid the crowds. Even if you have booked your ticket in advance, you’ll want to enjoy the house and gardens with fewer people. If possible, visit on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds.
  • Purchase your tickets in advance. Reservations are required for the self-guided visit to Biltmore House and are timed entry, so you do need to book in advance to make sure that tickets are available.
  • Get to the house at least 45 minutes before your Biltmore House entry time . It takes time to find a parking space and catch the shuttle bus to the house.
  • Note that children under 16 are allowed to enter free for all summer (through Labor Day)! The rest of the year, children under 9 and admitted free.
  • If you want to see the Christmas Lights or other special events throughout the year, book way in advance as they are very popular, and tickets sell out quickly. Biltmore Bloom in Spring is another popular event that boasts incredible floral displays.
  • You need to drive from location to location in the estate, it’s that big!

How can Asheville improve its public bus system? $300K study proposed

tour bus in asheville nc

ASHEVILLE - Funding initially slated for a regional transit master plan, in partnership with Buncombe County, will likely be redirected to a "city specific" study, says the city's transportation department.

The city allocated $300,000 as part of its fiscal year 2024 budget to evaluate "service options, financial resources, fleet and capital needs, connectivity opportunities, and potential governance models." The budget document said Buncombe County would provide matching funds.

But the county "did not choose to participate and provide funding, so the study did not take place," said Amber Wagner, the city's transit planning manager.

There's been "a lot of conversation" around the use of that $300,000, left in limbo, said Assistant City Manager Rachel Wood at an April 18 City Council briefing. Rather than use it directly for bus route extensions, staff recommends it be reallocated to fund a Comprehensive Operations and Financial Assessment, focusing on "post-COVID" changes in travel patterns and demographics.

Its most recent transit master plan, a 10-year outlook adopted in 2018, did not include a funding strategy for expansion. A 25% service increase, representing only some of the Year 1 recommendations, was implemented in January 2020, on the cusp of the pandemic.

Asheville Rides Transit has 18 bus routes, the Citizen Times has reported previously, extending out the city's arteries north, south, west and east. The 170, a route that takes riders out as far as Black Mountain, runs only every two hours. Two South Asheville routes that serve the airport and Biltmore Park run every 90 minutes; 10 run every hour; and five others every 30 minutes.

'At a deficit'

The pandemic triggered a "significant slowdown" for the system, said interim Transportation Director Jessica Morriss, and exacerbated challenges around driver shortages. Mirroring nationwide trends, ridership numbers plummeted.

While ridership has begun to see an uptick, the system is "operating at a deficit." For the last two years, the city has used federal COVID relief funds to help fill the gap, and its budget has historically been subsidized with money from the general and parking funds.

Ridership numbers:

  • Fiscal year 2021: 1.35 million
  • Fiscal year 2022: 1.32 million
  • Fiscal year 2023: 1.38 million
  • Fiscal year 2024 (projected): 1.58 million

The city's share of annual Federal Transit Administration non-competitive formula grant funding has decreased over the years due to changes to the allocation formula made by the Metropolitan Planning Organization in 2015, dipping 19% from 2015-2023.

ART is also facing the end of its eight-year, $55.8 million contract with RATP Dev USA for operations and maintenance of ART. As is standard practice, the city will re-bid for the service.

Since 2016, the city's transit investments have increased substantially, Morriss said. Additional revenue is needed to maintain services at existing levels, while funding is also needed for fleet purchases and facility improvement.

"There is a need for us to zoom out, look at our system's performance and health of our service delivery, and make sure we are utilizing our resources effectively and meeting the needs of our community," Wagner said.

The recommended Comprehensive Operational and Financial Assessment, or COA, would:

  • Evaluate current transit performance.
  • Identify operational improvements and efficiencies.
  • Assess needs for future Transit Master Plan recommendations and other more recently discussed possibilities, including the county's Ferry Road project.
  • Evaluate additional revenue needs and partnership opportunities.
  • Prepare for next year's transit contract rebidding.

Objectives could include exploring better use of electric and other types of fleet vehicles in ART service and evaluate the transit system's strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.

It represents a "scope-change," Wagner said, shifting focus from a joint planning effort with Buncombe County to city specific needs and ART improvements.

It could result in service-wide changes, the April 18 presentation said, such as possible route realignment, elimination of low ridership routes and service delivery alternatives, like micro transit.

Next steps?

Over the next several months, staff will draft solicitations for the transit operations contract and the COA, Wagner said. Contracts for these services would require City Council approval.

Another presentation is scheduled for the May 9 City Council briefing to discuss transit facility needs.

Asheville drivers urged to heed school bus stop arm laws ahead of statewide survey

by Kelly Doty and Madison Smith

FILE - NC school bus (Photo credit: WLOS staff)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — As the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction prepares to conduct a stop arm count, Asheville officials urge drivers along one busy roadway not to illegally pass school buses.

North Carolina is helping the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) coordinate a national survey that will take place on Wednesday, April 17. The goal is to document the illegal passing of school buses to help highlight the need for improved safety countermeasures.

WATCH FOR SCHOOL BUSES: DISTRICTS ACROSS NC TALLY NUMBER OF STOP-ARM VIOLATIONS

Dr. Kim Dechant, the chief of staff at Asheville City Schools, urges drivers to refrain from passing buses when the stop arm is out, noting that Merrimon Avenue is among the worst roads where this violation occurs.

"It puts our students in extremely dangerous situations," Dr. Dechant said.

Roughly 50 drivers in the 2022-2023 school year violated stop arm laws, and that's just within the Asheville city school system, which works in conjunction with Buncombe County schools.

With 100s of children exiting buses every morning and afternoon, it's important to stay vigilant while driving because it could save a life, says Asheville City Schools' Transportation Director Amanda Rigsby.

SPIKE IN SCHOOL BUS STOP SIGN VIOLATIONS PROMPTS LAW REMINDER FROM WAYNESVILLE POLICE

"Because it's a life. It's a child's life, and I think anytime you see a yellow bus, you err on the side of caution," she said.

"My advice to everybody when they see a school bus and a red flashing stop sign, if you don't know what to dojust stop and wait," Buncombe County Schools' Director of Transportation Jeremy Stowe said. "It's safest for everybody all together."

This has prompted officials to conduct research on stop arm violations, which has resulted in money for cameras to catch those violating these laws. The data collected will be passed on to the local police department or further and is subject to prosecution.

WHEN SHOULD YOU STOP?

The following information is according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation .

In the following scenarios, all traffic in both directions must stop.

  • When traveling on a two-lane road, traffic in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus.
  • For a two-lane road with a center turning lane, all traffic from both directions, including the turning lane, must stop for school buses.
  • For a four-lane road without a median separation, all traffic in both directions must stop for school buses.

In the following scenarios, only traffic behind the school bus must stop.

  • On a divided highway with a median separation, only traffic following the school bus must stop.
  • On a four-lane road with a center turning lane, only traffic following the bus must stop.

Group of people seen taking bear cub out of tree for pictures

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ( WHNS /Gray News) - A bear cub is heading to a rehabilitation center after a group of people recently disturbed two cubs for a picture in Asheville, North Carolina, according to North Carolina Wildlife officials.

The group was caught on camera picking up a cub from a wooded area to take a picture with it while another cub remained nearby.

In the video, one of the individuals appears to drop the bear cub.

Wildlife officials said they captured one of the cubs and are taking it to a rehabilitation center. The other cub could not be found and officials are unsure if it made its way back to its mother.

Wildlife officials explained that while it’s common to see bear cubs this time of year in North Carolina, it’s illegal for people to disturb their dens.
