Cycling Jeju Island: From coastal paths to testing climbs

A fun way to explore the island.

Bike with sanbangsan and hallasan

Jeju is a great place for cycling. It has something for everyone, whether you’re a beginner wanting to go for a leisurely cycle around one of the flat coastal paths, or an experienced rider wanting to tackle the hilly areas inland.

Each path is elevated thanks to the incredible scenery of the island that you’ll find on each trip. In this article we’ll take a look at some of the best cycle routes on Jeju, as well as look at practical considerations like how to rent a bike on Jeju and how to get your get to Jeju.

Jeju Fantasy Bicycle Path

The most popular place to cycle on Jeju is around the coast. There’s actually a cycle route–known as Jeju Fantasy Bicycle Path–that takes riders all the way around the circumference of the island. In total, the path is 234 km and it’s split into 10 different sections, each coming in at around 20 to 30 kilometers.

The route is super easy to follow, thanks to the blue line on the road that directs cyclists along the path. There are also plenty of signs to keep you in the right direction. And of course, as you’ll on the coast, you’re never far away from the path even if you do take a slight miss turn.

Jeju cycle tip 🚲

You can see all the bike paths and the exact route they take on Kakao Maps. Search for “bike path” with Jeju Island in the display and then click on the path you want to follow. Zoom in to see the exact route each path takes.

To make the most of your trip, cycle anti-clockwise around the island. This ensures that you’ll be cycling on the bike path going in the same direction as the traffic. You’ll also have views of the coast with the road getting in the way.

The bike path itself has sections that are both bike lanes on roads as well as on wide pavements meaning you share some parts with pedestrians. The path is suitable for all kinds of bikes, and you’ll see everything from road bikes, to mountain bikes, and even foldable Bromptons.

As a coastal path, most of the routes are quite flat. Although, there are some climbs. The section along Aewol Coastal Road on the northwest of the island is especially notable due to its climbs. I recently did the entire path and my exercise tracking app showed that the total was around 1,454 meters of elevation gain across the entire journey.

The other factor that make your journey more challenging is the wind. Jeju is an island known for it’s wind and it can have a real impact on how easy your cycle. I’ve had cycles where I’ve turned a corner and suddenly been hit by the wind and had to seriously struggle through until it died down again.

Jeju’s best cycle routes

Cycling the entire circumference of the island is a fun experience and a great way to see all Jeju’s coast has to offer.

It’s highly recommended if you’re into cycling and there are plenty of guesthouses and hotels along the way you can stop off at. How long the cycle takes will depend entirely on your fitness and the number of stops you want to make along the way.

If you don’t have time to do the entire journey, you can choose a spot to cycle from. Most paths have their highlights, but my favorites are:

Jeju coastal bike route 3

This is a 35 km course along the westernmost part of Jeju. It’s one of the quietest areas of the island with plenty of flat roads in good condition, making it a great place to build it some momentum. You also get spectacular views of Chagwido Island, Sanbangsan Mountain , and even Hallasan Mountain when the weather is clear. The trail officially runs from Haegeoreum Village Park to Songaksan Mountain. However, I would extend this slightly and go from Hyeopjae Beach to Sanbangsan Mountain if you have time, as these are two of Jeju’s most popular sites.

Jeju coastal bike route 8

Route 8 starts at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak and winds along the island’s east coast for 29 km until you hit Gimnyeong Beach.

You pass some beautiful beaches along the way, including Hado Beach, Saehwa Beach, Pyeongdae Beach, and Woljeong Beach. Not only do these spots provide nice views, but both Pyeongdae and Woljeong are filled with cafes where you can rest and refuel.

Jeju 1100 Goji: Jeju’s highest road

So far, we’ve only spoken about Jeju’s coastal route, as this is the most accessible part of the island to cycle. But for more advanced cyclists, the inner island is where the fun really starts. As Jeju is a volcanic island, the interior is full of challenging climbs.

The most famous is the cycle to 1100 Goji. At 1,100 meters, this is the highest road on Jeju and also one that enters Hallasan Mountain Nation Park. The climb has several ups and downs so the actual amount you climb will be more than 1,100 meters. I started in Jeju City at around 100 meters above sea level and returned home having climbed around 1,337 meters.

The 1,110 Goji road is relatively quiet and, other than the pain from the climb, is an enjoyable cycle. The 1,110 Goji is also on a road that that goes around the circumference of Hallasan Mountain and it’s possible to cycle all the way around. The section of road from Seogwipo City side of the Island to Jeju City side of the island tends to have much more traffic and where there is plenty of space for most of the cycle, there are sections where there is less room.

Getting a bike to Jeju

Getting your bike to Jeju is relatively straightforward, however, you decide to come. If you travel by plane and have your own bike bag, you can check it in as checked luggage.

If you don’t have a bike, some airlines will even let you rent a bike bag bike that you pick up at the airport. Hit this link to find out more information about the service as provided by Jeju Air.

Another option is to visit Jeju by ferry and bring your bike on the ferry. I’ve never done this but I know people who have done so without any trouble.

Next up: Find out how to get to Jeju Island

Renting a bike on Jeju

If you don’t want to bring your own bike to Jeju, you can rent one on the island. While there are plenty of options, Bike Trip has an English-language website which makes it easy for visitors to use.

The shop is located near to Jeju International Airport, which is perfect if you want to pick up your bike and start riding straight away. They also offer a bike delivery service where you can choose to have you bike rental delivered to different locations on the island. This is perfect if you want to cycle around a specific part of Jeju.

Jeju & More Routes cast a wide net. It explores two certification bike paths , a cycling course at the bottom of the east coast, and more biking routes.

These bike paths encompass a diverse range of landscapes and regions.

  • Jeju Fantasy Bike Path tracks the perimeter of Jeju, Korea’s tropical getaway.
  • Bukhangang Bike Path rides a short course from Seoul to Chuncheon City.
  • East Coast Route (Part 2) picks up where the East Coast Route left off.
  • Taehwagang Bicycle Path runs along the Taehwa River in Ulsan Metropolitan City.

Let’s look closer at each.

The Jeju Fantasy Bicycle Path (234 km) circles Jeju Island ( 제주도; map ). Known as Korea’s Hawaii, the island hangs upon Halla Mountain (Hallasan ; 한라산; map ), both a dormant volcano and the tallest peak in South Korea.

Start in Jeju City (제주시; map ) at the top of the island. Travel west and pass beaches decorated with rocky islands bobbing offshore.

Seogwipo City (서귀포시; map ) claims the southern half of Jeju Island  Adored by tourists for its natural beauty, Seogwipo’s borders hold unique cliff faces , waterfalls , and a UNESCO designated volcanic tuff cone .

The Jeju Fantasy Bike Path ends where it begins, at Yong Du Am Certification Center (용두암 인증센터; map ). This last stamp sits 3.4 kilometers from Jeju International Airport ( directions ), the nation’s second largest airport and quickest exit off the island.

Find all the resources you need to finish the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path below.

  • How to Get There — transportation to the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path.

Chuncheon ⟷ Hanam Winding Path

The Bukhangang Bike Path branches off from the Hangang Bike Path and Cross-Country Route just east of Seoul. It starts in Namyangju City (남양주시; map ), heads up the North Han River (북한강; Bukhangang; map ), and finishes in Chuncheon City (춘천; map ), the capital of Gangwon Province (강원도; map ).

Like the Bike Seoul to Yeoju section of the Hangang Bike Path , the Bukhangang Bike Path follows a decommissioned rail line. This helps riders avoid major hills and decorates the course with a few retired train tunnels.

Also dotted along the route find waterside parks, a railbike, delicious cuisine, and museums and theme parks .

Below, find all the resources you need to complete the Bukhangang Bike Path.

  • Bike Chuncheon to Namyangju — a ride-through (1 of 1).
  • The North Han River — a profile of the waterway.
  • Highlights — major attractions on the Bukhangang Bike Path.
  • How to Get There — transportation to the Bukhangang Bike Path.

The East Coast Route covers the top two-thirds of South Korea’s East Coast. The southernmost certification center (stamp booth) sits in Yeongdeok County (영덕군; map ), North Gyeongsang Province (경상북도; map ).

However, planners installed enough biking infrastructure to allow adventurous cyclists to ride clear down to Busan City (부산시; map ) on the bottom of Korea’s east coast.

East Coast Route (Part 2) will help you finish the east coast journey. It explores the highlights and difficulties in completing the route.

Explore Pohang’s ocean sunrise grasping hand . Ulsan’s dragon back park . Busan’s mega-beach . And more.

East-Coast-2-Pohang-Homigot-Sunset-Gazebo-Port-Town

The Taehwa River (태화강; Taehwagang; map ) and the parallel Taehwagang Bicycle Path cut through the center of Ulsan City. Though not a certification bike path , the cycling course offers a parade of highlights, including:

  • Seoknamsa Temple (석남사; map ) — a mountainside temple.
  • Seonbawi Rock (선바위; map ) — a standing rock.
  • Taehwa River National Garden (태화강 국가정원; map ) — bamboo forest and garden park.
  • Dong District (동구; map ) — home to the world’s largest shipyard and car plant.
  • Daewangam Park (대왕암공원; map ) — famed park with picturesque bridges.

Bike Path Types

The bike paths on Jeju & More Routes offer a variety of cycling surfaces.

  • 35% bike paths
  • 65% coastal roads

Jeju Fantasy Bike Path and East Coast Route (Part 2) feature the most challenging bike path types. They’re filled with hills and travel on vehicle roads.

The Jeju Fantasy Bike Path travels along coastal roads. Some downtown sections include mediums that separate cars and bicycles. However, most of the cycling course runs on the narrow shoulders of roads marked with blue lines and bike decals.

Conditions on East Coast Route (Part 2) mirror the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path . In the north, the cycling course hops between a coastal highway and tiny port towns. In the south, it runs along busy seaside roads. These roads offer little separation between cars and bikes.

East-Coast-2-Pohang-Homigot-Seaside-Road-to-Homigot

The Bukhangang and Taehwagang Bike Paths offer an opposite experience, using more protected bike paths.

The Bukhangang Bike Path zooms through riverside parks and along a paved over rail line. Near Chuncheon, the course uses sidewalks on rural roads.

The majority of the Taehwagang Bike Path runs on protected bike paths. The path employs a few farm access roads and country roads in the mountainous west. The eastern Dong District utilizes a mix of neighborhood streets and sidewalks.

Jeju & More Routes offers two multi-day courses and two one-day trips.

Jeju Fantasy Bike Path ’s length (234 kilometers, the third longest certification bike path ) and 100-meter-plus hills will slow your progress.

If you’re a fit cyclist who hates breaks, you can conquer the course in under two days. However, to catch the sights and swim the beaches, budget four or five days to circle Jeju Island by bike.

At 70 kilometers, the Bukhangang Bike Path is the second shortest certification bike path. It also uses an extensive network of protected bike paths, making the cycle simple and unobstructed. A 154-meter hill in the middle may slow progress. But its grade is gradual.

Minus transportation time, a determined bike rider can complete the course in an afternoon. Focused on a grand tour? You can spend over a day completing the course.

East Coast Route (Part 2) isn’t a certification bike path. But if it were, it’d be the second longest (247 km) behind Nakdonggang Bike Path (389 km).

Why? The course only traverses the bottom third of the country’s east coast .

Many obstacles extend the route: jutting peninsulas and coastal horns; a detour into downtown Ulsan; a nuclear power plant.

Up for a fast-paced cycle? You can complete the course in two days. Want to slow things down? Visit the Japanese fishing village? Gawk at the hand grasping the sunrise ? Plan to ride between three to four days.

The Taehwagang Bike Path measures only 54 kilometers long. Much of its elevation lies in the mountainous west. But the climb is gradual and won’t sap too much energy. Cyclists can complete the main course in less than a day.

How to Get There

The Jeju Fantasy Bike Path lives off the mainland. But it and the other Jeju & More cycling courses aren’t difficult to reach. You just need to use all the major forms of transportation: sea, air, and intercity buses .

Need to get to Jeju Island with your bike? The island features one of Korea’s largest ferry terminals and its second largest airport, Jeju International (제주국제공항; map ).

One of the busiest passenger routes in the world , the flight from Incheon and Seoul to Jeju takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. A ferry departing from Korea’s southwestern tip takes 5 hours.

East-Coast-2-Yeongdeok-Pohang-Bike-Path-and-Coastal-Road

Though buses are useful, trains are the best way to get the Bukhangang Bicycle Path.

The Gyeongchun Line (경춘선; map ) employs both commuter and bike-friendly ITX trains. It connects Seoul and Chuncheon City and hugs the northern two-thirds of the bike path.

Unlike the official East Coast Route , East Coast Route (Part 2) passes major cities, including Busan , Ulsan , and Pohang . Their intercity bus terminals give excellent access to the cycling route.

Ulsan Metropolitan City doesn’t have a subway or bike-friendly train station. However, its intercity bus terminals give cyclists an excellent entry point to the Taehwagang Bike Path.

Feel the Breeze From the Sea <Cycling Jeju: A Two-Wheeled Journey Along Dazzling Coastline>

Jeju has around 234 kilometers of coastline peppered with pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, and idyllic villages. If you want to see it all, cycling is one of the best ways to do so.

Many of Jeju’s most famous attractions are located on the island’s coast. You’ll find pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, and volcanic hills. As people traditionally settled near the sea, the coast is also home to many idyllic villages. If you want to explore these areas, you have many options. Jeju Olle Trails are walking paths that circumnavigate the island, letting you slowly take in the views. Or you can take a bus or rent a car to be shuttled from site to site. An excellent middle ground is cycling. When riding a bike, you are close to nature, yet have a sense of direction and speed. While walking around the island would take weeks and you can drive around in a day, if you cycle, you can see all the sites in anything from two days to a week. Here is everything you need to know about cycling around Jeju.

Jeju’s coastline seems like it was made for cycling. With a circumference of around 234km, it is the perfect length for a variety of trips. Experienced cyclists looking for a challenge can complete the circuit in two days, while beginners can take things slower—breaking the trip down into manageable chunks. The abundance of villages along the coast means you are never far from a hotel or a campsite.

It is not just the length that makes the island suitable for cycling. There is a bike lane that lines the coastal road all the way around the island. The road is in good condition, which means you won’t be struggling over difficult terrain. Additionally, while there are slopes and hills, the majority of the coastal route is relatively flat. Fall is the perfect time of year to make the trip. The temperature is cooler than summer, yet is still far from the cold depths of winter.

Cycling on Jeju

Jeju has created a circular cycle path that goes all the way around the island and is split into ten recommended courses. Each of these trails is marked out by blue signs that contain route information. This path makes it easy to either cycle around the whole island, usually starting in Jeju City or Seogwipo City, or just a certain part. Here are two of our favorite cycle routes.

Cycling on Jeju

Many of the cycling routes go past beautiful beaches. Course two takes this to the next level by passing three of the island’s most famous stretches of sand. First is Gwakji Beach, which comes 5.2km into the trip. This is a vast expanse of white sand and blue ocean. Keep an eye out for the beach’s open-air seawater bath and the haenyeo statues. If you are feeling hungry, there are several restaurants and cafes in the area, including Cafe Taehee, which is famous for its fish and chips.

If you cycle another 12km you’ll hit Hyeopjae beach and then, a little further on, Geumneung beach. Hyeopjae is famous for its shallow turquoise water, but even if you don’t fancy a dip, you can still enjoy the views out over Biyang-do island. Geumneung is a short cycle down the coast—here you’ll find a large strip of white sand contrasting with Jeju’s famous black volcanic rock. This area is also home to Hallim Park, which is a large park with a variety of gardens, cliffs, caves, and a folk village. It is well worth a visit if you have the time on your cycle trip.

Cycling on Jeju

Course eight is popular because it starts at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. This makes it possible to get up early, watch Jeju’s most famous sunrise, and then begin your journey. At 29km, this trail is one of the longer ones on the island. Of course, this means you get to see more of Jeju. The first part of the cycle is dominated by views of Seongsan Ilchulbong and Udo Island. Around 9km in, you’ll be faced with Jimibong, a volcanic hill distinct due to its steepness. You can stop and climb to the top of this peak if you have the energy. On course eight, you will also pass several beaches, including Hado, Pyeongdae, Saehwa, Weoljeong, and Gimnyeong. There are also plenty of little cafes and restaurants you can visit along your route.

Cycling on Jeju

If you don’t bring your bike to Jeju, you’ll need to hire one. There are plenty of places where you can rent bikes in the city. Here are two of them:

Biketrip is a bike rental store located just a five-minute walk from the airport. You can choose from trail bikes, road bikes, or electric bikes. The store also allows you to choose add-ons, including panniers, locks, and lights. Biketrip will deliver or pick up your bike from anywhere on the island, which is perfect if you don’t want to start your trip at the shop. You can reserve your bike as well as drop-off or pick-up location in advance. What’s more, Biketrip has an English language version of its website, making booking your trip a breeze.

- Address: 26-3 Yongmun-ro, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

- Opening hours:  8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Closed on Wednesday

- Price: From KRW 24,000

- Contact: 064-744-5990

- Website: http://www.biketrip.co.kr/shop/main/index.php (For English language version, click button in top right corner and use a browser other than Internet Explorer)

Cycling on Jeju

At Yongduam Hiking you can choose from road bikes, hybrid bikes, and electric bikes. You can get a discount on your trip if you book for multiple days in a row. You can reserve bikes in advance and, if you do, you’ll be given the option of picking them up at the airport, ferry terminal, or the bus terminal. The shop lets customers drop bikes off at various places along the coast, so you don’t have to cycle back. Drop-off locations include Hyeopjae Beach, Sanbangsan Mountain, Seogwipo City, Namwon, Seongsan, Weoljeong-ri, or Hamdeok.

- Address: 31 Bokseong-ro, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

- Opening Hours: 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

- Price: From KRW 17,000

- Contact: 064-757-7777

- Website: http://www.jeju8253.com (Korean Language Only)

Cycling on Jeju

- Many bike paths on Jeju are mixed-use, which means you will be sharing with pedestrians. Be alert in busy areas.

- Most people choose to cycle the island anti-clockwise. This means you will be closest to the sea.

- Some of the roads around the city and popular tourist spots can be busy with cars.

- The roads around the coast are typically flat, although there are some hills—notably around Jungmun and Aewol.

- Do you have Kakao Maps on your smartphone? If so, you can see all ten coastal bike routes by searching for “bike road” within the app.

- Jeju is known for its wind. Particularly strong gusts can make cycling significantly more difficult. Check the weather forecast before you leave if this is a problem.

- Stay safe and always wear a helmet.

Jeju Fantasy Bike Path: The Perfect 1 Week Itinerary

Jeju Fantasy Bike Path

Jeju Island, South Korea’s own volcanic island paradise, is better known as a prime honeymoon spot than a cycling destination. However, with the opening of the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path, that’s all set to change. Although Jeju Island has always been widely regarded as a great spot for cyclists among the cycling community in Korea, the new bike path is bound to put it on the map even more.

This Summer, Veeran and I decided to make our summer vacation a cycling holiday! We were originally going to do the Seoul to Busan route but, with soaring temperatures throughout the country and cheap ferry tickets to Jeju, we decided to opt for the island life instead. I’ve already written about why I think the best way to explore Jeju is by bike. So, if you want to know how to do it, here’s the itinerary that we followed!

Before I start I should add, I know that a lot of people cycle around Jeju in just a day, but we decided to give ourselves time to explore the island as well. This itinerary is best suited for people who want to take it fairly easy and squeeze in a few sights along the way, too.

Day 1: Jeju City to Hyeopjae Beach 40km

sam_4395edit

Regardless of whether you come to Jeju by ferry or plane, you’ll start your journey in Jeju City. Most people recommend heading anti-clockwise around the island which is what we did.

Sights To See Along the Way:

  • Yongduam Rock
  • Hyeopjae Beach
  • Hallim Park

Hyeopjae Beach was actually probably our favourite beach on the island. We loved the main street area- it wasn’t super touristy like Jungman Beach, but still had a buzzing beachy vibe. The water here was turquoise and calm, while the water was crystal blue- it actually reminded me of the beaches in The Philippines!

This is a great place to catch a sunset with a beer. Craft beer lovers will be pleased to know that there’s an awesome bottle shop on the main street- I was chuffed to see Brew Dog, my favourite Scottish beer on the shelves!

Where to Stay : H3 Hostel Jeju, Jeju, South Korea

Double Room: 50,000 KRW  (Check the link for up to date prices)

Although this place is advertised as a hostel, I’d say it’s more similar to a guesthouse. The rooms are spacious and clean- similar to an upmarket love motel. The convenient location is just a 5-minute bike ride away from the Hyeopjae Beach main strip.

Day 2: Hyeopjae Beach to Seogwipo City 75km

sam_4400edit

This is the longest day of cycling on the trip, so get up early- you’ll want to take a lot of pictures along the way. The areas around Jungmun Beach and Seogwipo are home to some of Jeju’s best attractions. However, with resorts lining the coast and congested traffic, it’s best to dedicate a whole day (sans bikes!) to seeing them so I suggest taking a rest day on day 3 to explore this part of the island.

  • Sangbangulsa Temple
  • Songaksan Mountain (One of the loveliest olle paths that we passed!)

Where to Stay:  Kkodak Kkodak Guesthouse, Seogwipo, South Korea

Double Room: .30,000 KRW  (Check the link for up to date prices)

Cheap, cheerful and conveniently located in the heart of Seogwipo City. Don’t expect ay extra frills here. Rooms were spacious enough to fit 2 bikes which is something to look out for in big city areas where you might not want to leave your bike outside. A simple breakfast of toast, jam and coffee is included in the price. Fine for a night or two, especially if you’re on a tight budget.

Day 3: Rest Day! Seogwipo and Jungmun

sam_4505edit

Jungmun beach is, without a doubt, the tourist epicentre of Jeju Island. This is where you’ll find all the big resorts often frequented by honeymooners and Korean celebrities. If you’re like me and that doesn’t really sound like your scene, don’t worry! This area actually attracts a lot of tourists for a good reason- your within easily commutable distance of all the natural beauty that Jeju is famous for.

Sights to See Here:

  • Waterfalls (Cheonjiyeon and Cheonjaeyeon)
  • Jusangjeolli Cliffs
  • Jungmun Beach
  • A whole variety of cheesy but fun museums!
  • Lee Jung Seop Art Street

(See above for more hotel details)

Day 4: Seogwipo City to Seongsan Ilchulbong 64km

sam_4600edit

The trip from Seogwipo City to Seongsan Ilchulbong is full of picturesque spots with few tourists so make sure you’re camera is fully charged! This is one of the main areas frequented by “haenyo”, also known as sea women. If you’re into seafood you’ll be spoiled for choice, with restaurants selling the freshest catch of the day every few kilometres!

Sights to See Along the Way:

  • Jeongbang Waterfall
  • Seossak Estuary
  • Jeju Folk Museum
  • Pyoseon Beach (Huge beach, not many tourists, great place for seafood- highly recommended!)

Where to Stay:  Sungsan Beach Hotel, Seogwipo, South Korea

Double Room: 55,000 KRW  (Check the link for up to date prices)

Since we wanted to hike Seongsan Ilchulbong at sunrise, we decided to stay within walking distance of the peak. Our hotel was excellent value for money- really clean with a great view of the peak itself. We were both really pleased with it.

Day 5: Seongsan Ilchulbong to Gimnyeong Beach 29km

sam_4790edit

A short day of cycling but a long day of sightseeing. Get up early to see the famous sunrise from Seongsan Ilchulbong- Trip Advisor’s no 1 thing to do in Jeju. Then catch a ferry over to Udo Island to see the Scotland of Korea! Haha I usually hate those comparisons made by the Korean tourism board but Udo does actually look pretty Scottish. (And that’s coming from a Scottish person, so you know it’s true!)

Don’t forget to try the famous peanut ice cream and peanut makgeolli while you’re there! You can hire bikes and scooters on the island, or take your own over with you. We left ours and got an E-Tandem Bike when we got there. Put your relationship to the test!

  • Seongsan Ilchulbong
  • Woljeongri Beach
  • Gimnyeong Beach

Where to Stay:  Art Guest House Jeju, Jeju, South Korea

Double Room: 45,000 KRW  (Check the link for up to date prices)

We absolutely loved this little place! You can choose to stay in a double room in the main house or outside in a private chalet. All the furnishings were wooden and had a really scandinavian feeling! The young women who worked there made us an amazing breakfast in the morning with kimbab and tasty side dishes. We wished we could have stayed here longer because it was so quaint, cute and peaceful.

Day 6: Gimnyeong Beach to Jeju City 29km

sam_4846edit

The final day, and only 22 km to left to cycle! Before setting off, take a local bus to see the main sights in this area- Gimnyeong Maze Park and Majangul Caves. We, unfortunately, had to skip this as I got a flat and our pump broke which was a real shame. These sights are quite far in land and would require you to cycle uphill on the motorway which I wouldn’t really recommend. Bus is best in this case.

  • Gimnyeong Maze Park
  • Majaangul Cave
  • Hamdeok Beach

Where to Stay:  Hotel W Top-Dong, Jeju, South Korea

Deluxe Double: 65,000 KRW  (Check the link for up to date prices)

At the end of such a long cycle, you’ll be desperate for a nice soft mattress and fluffy duvet- this hotel will not disappoint! For 65,000 won, this is great value for money. It’s rare to find such amazing beds for this price in Korea and, to be honest, it felt like 5 star quality. (Well, what I imagine 5 star to be like, ha!) Plus, it’s a short cycle away from the airport and ferry terminal, and a short walk away from E-Mart. There’s also a street dedicated to black pork barbeque just around the corner!

Day 7: Jeju City

sam_4893edit

Congratulations, you made it around the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path! Now, it’s time to celebrate. Get yourself some soju- you deserve it!

Jeju City is actually the perfect transit point for hiking Hallasan- this is what we decided to do on our final day. If you want to be a bit kinder to your legs (and I don’t blame you) there is always the ever popular  Loveland!  Jeju City is also home to some great restaurants and even a brewery. The perfect place to chill before heading back to the mainland.

I hope you guys have enjoyed this post and it’s helped you plan your ideal bike trip to Jeju Island! Still not convinced about cycling?  Let me twist your arm !

Hey, did you hire your bikes? Would you recommend a few bike rentals?

No, I brought my bike with me as I already had one in the country. Going by ferry made it easy as I didn’t need to pay to bring it on. There are some bike rental shops in Jeju City but I think they might be expensive. Might be worthwhile joining the Jeju expat group on FB and seeing if someone would be happy to give you a loan of a bike or sell you one for cheap that you can try and sell afterwards?

On the coastal roads I tried to stay as close as possible to the coast. This was mostly achieved by following the Coastal Road, marked "Haeandoro” in Korean. It is tricky to follow, so I often used online-map services to check my location.

The bike paths are separated from the main coastal road by regular blocks for much of the route, meaning vehicles can only enter the bike lane every few hundred meters.

Even so, don’t be surprised to find vehicles (mostly rental cars) blocking your route. These vehicles are easy enough to navigate around and, actually, I was stopped more often – perhaps as much as every kilometer! – by the beautiful views Jeju offers.

Other major local roads have bike lanes without physical barriers and I also found a few narrow paths solely for pedestrians and cyclists. Cars sometimes use these too, but the traffic volume is very low.

Dirt and obstacles on the paths I have no problem with farmers drying their crops along the paths - it is a unique aspect of Jeju and very endearing - but the biggest problem was the dirt and even glass along the bike paths. Any street cleaning that takes place seems to only cover the main vehicle lanes.

World-class bike networks take great care over cycle path cleanliness, and while Copenhagen’s impressive standards may be too much to ask for, there needs to be more awareness of the need for cleanliness on bike paths.

Jeju differences

In comparison with the Korean mainland, there are far fewer basic facilities such as resting areas, toilets, and pumps. The only resting areas along the 1132 highway are the bus stops, which are far from comfortable. Ideally there would be resting areas with bike racks, toilets, repair kits and bike pumps.

The mainland also has plenty of bike-only paths, while Jeju's bike paths follow main roads. However, bike-only paths are not essential on Jeju as the existing paths are sufficient and there is little room, especially on the coastal road, for dedicated bike lanes.

Jeju province does well in acknowledging the tourists who come to cycle. Once I reached a 50-meter break in the bike path and a sign said, "Walk Your Bike," with an explanation – albeit mostly in Korean – that it was for cyclists’ safety. At the other end was another sign wishing me a nice vacation. There was even a promise to expand the bike network. It was nothing major, but it was nice to be acknowledged.

Improvements in maps and information When I asked for a cycle map at the airport I was given a normal road map, which is not that useful for cyclists who need more detail. The official provision of cycling material, in multiple languages, needs to be improved.

Another way of improving the cycling experience would be to brand the bicycle trail as unique in Korea, such as the Olle walking paths. I understand this is currently in the pipeline, with improved signage, a stamp system and guesthouse discounts having great marketing potential.

Cycling tips for Jeju and Korea Don’t be intimidated by the expensive road bikes and equipment of Lycra-clad Korean cyclists! The cycling infrastructure is well developed and most of the cycling, especially along Jeju’s coast, is fairly moderate.

A repair kit and a spare tube should suffice, although I must admit I survived without those on my trip, only picking up a flat tire outside the airport. Also make sure you have front and rear lights for evening cycling, as I was surprised twice by the dark, which draws in quicker than you might expect.

My golden rule is to stay as light as possible and try to mount your bag on your bicycle, which greatly reduces the strain on your back. And again, you don't need a special bicycle bag as a bag strap can safely secure your luggage.

My cycling experience on Jeju The bicycle network on Jeju-do is already well developed, but while the hard infrastructure is great, the soft infrastructure needs improvement. There needs to be better marketing, better tourist information, and improved maintenance of bike paths.

In the near future, late 2015 or early 2016, Jeju will be added to the national bicycle network and cyclists will be able to collect stamps along certain courses. Even before this happens, I can think of no better way to appreciate Jeju's beauty than cycling its coastal bike paths.

On The Road: Secret to cycling fun in Seoul and Jeju Island

jeju island bike tour

SOUTH KOREA – Touring beautiful Jeju Island on a bicycle gives one plenty of time for reflection.

Thoughts that cross my mind include “yellow fields of canola, wow, brilliant splashes of colour”, “skyscraper-size windmills, jutting out of the misty waters, majestic” and “my lungs – they are about to explode”.

Forgive me for being dramatic. It is just my middle-aged body talking. It is angry at the wet sea gusts, blowing the bike backwards. My legs have not shut up since we hit the hills a few kilometres back.

I notice that on the southern island, the members of my tour group are the only ones on bikes, because the locals and domestic tourists are not insane.

Instead of fighting the coastal wind and rain, they are inside the coffee bars that proliferate along the coastal route, each looking cosier and more adorable than the last. I make a mental note to come back and do a cafe tour. In a rental car.

I am on a cycling tour of Seoul and Jeju at the invitation of the Korea Tourism Organization. A small group of participants from around South-east Asia is here to see if cycling can be a tourism draw.

My answer is: Absolutely, but go at the right time of the year. And if you meet an unexpected hill or strong gusts, do not kill yourself keeping to a schedule.

In contrast to Jeju’s rough-going rides, the cycling paths along Seoul’s Han River are a dream.

There are over 100km of dedicated bike lanes along the Hangang Bike Path network. A cyclist could not ask for more. In March, the air is a crisp 15 deg C, there is no wind, the tarmac is pristine and the terrain is mostly flat.

The river path, an infrastructural wonder built in 2012, rarely intersects with street traffic.

Most of the time, riders are cloaked in nature, hearing only insects, the click of the bike chain and, occasionally, the boomboxes of hiking retirees. Like in Singapore, the auntie and uncle hikers use them to alert distracted adults and teens on bikes.

To encourage ridership, the South Korean government offers a certification book, unofficially called a passport. It costs 4,500 won (about S$4.50) and is available at several centres on the trail.

jeju island bike tour

Along every path in the country, there are red structures that look like telephone booths. Inside, there is a stamp unique to that spot. The passport holder’s job is to get the stamps, then exchange completed passports for certificates and medals.

I scoff at the idea at first, but as we move along the river, the passport unleashes a compulsion within me. And, like others in my group, I turn into a red booth-obsessed, stamp-collecting monster.

Our four-day tour includes two to three hours of cycling after breakfast and lunch. The first two days are in Seoul and the remaining two are on Jeju Island.

Our meals are taken at tourist locations frequented by tour buses.

For example, one lunch spot is at a cultural centre for gochujang, the red chilli paste ubiquitous in Korean cuisine. We have a hands-on gochujang-making session, then move to a dining room where we are served bibimbap, the one-bowl rice dish that features the red paste.

The food at these dining spots, each featuring a regional speciality – seafood hotpot, black pork, freshwater snail, raw fish – is uniformly excellent.

But we are on an organised tour and personal flexibility is curtailed. For example, if you and a pal want to stop cycling to linger at a scenic place, you might hear a respectful but urgent “stay with the group” and “catch up”.

We have a schedule to follow, a restriction that self-guided bike tourists do not have to deal with.

On Jeju, our guide must have whispered “catch up” to my panting face a dozen times, as if I were only pretending to be ashen-faced and wheezing.

After fighting the wind and rain, I finally give up. Midway through the afternoon ride, I throw my bike into the recovery van and hop into the warm, cosy safety vehicle, which takes me to the next rest stop.

The best thing about a guided bike tour is that someone is there to keep you honest and force you to pedal. The next best thing? You can always get away from him by taking the recovery car.

Tips for going to South Korea for a bike tour

Join a bike tour group or rent bikes for a self-guided tour – either option is doable. One offers peace of mind and the other, flexibility.

For group tours, companies to consider are Shangrila Cycling Tours ( str.sg/iook ) and Travel Wander ( str.sg/iooZ ).

Shangrila has a six-day round-island Jeju cycling package that starts from $2,290 a person. It includes accommodation, airport transfers, meals, a safety-support vehicle and a cycling guide. The company also offers cycling tours of other regions in South Korea.

Travel Wander offers a six-day self-guided ride of Jeju Island, from $898 a person. As cyclists are self-guided, there are no guides, support vehicles or meals, but the package does include accommodation, bike rental and hotline assistance. Cycling tours of other regions of South Korea are also available.

For those who prefer a self-guided cycling trip, consider Biketotal (tel: +82-31-977-6147), a bicycle rental company. It has various locations, such as at Jeju Airport and key subway stops in Seoul.

When calling, ask if it has English-speaking staff or contact the Korean Tourism Organization in Singapore (tel: 6533-0441 or e-mail [email protected] ) before leaving.

Short-term rentals from kiosks at the Han River park start at 3,000 won (about S$3) an hour.

Companies like Biketotal offer longer-term rentals for those seeking to do a tour. Fees range from 25,000 to 30,000 won a day, depending on the style of bicycle (mountain, road or e-bike).

When renting bicycles, ordering food or speaking to shopkeepers, try using an app for English-Korean translation. There are some bilingual navigational signs on the bike routes, but they do not cover every contingency.

Popular app choices include Papago for translation and Naver for navigation.

Take note of general safety rules before and during riding, such as staying in the bike lane, riding single file, keeping a safe braking distance from the bike in front of you, and familiarising yourself with the brake and gear system before starting.

Losing control of the bike when going downhill is a common and dangerous problem.

Jeju Island, South Korea

This volcanic island, which lies 80 miles southwest off the coast of the Korean peninsula, is South Korea's only tropical destination. The emerald seas, hot climate, and sandy beaches make it a popular destination among Korean honeymooners. The veritable paradise is only a one-hour flight from South Korea's capital city, Seoul. But, despite its busy airport and beautiful scenery, Jeju Island is still relatively undiscovered by international travelers. Along with its natural beauty, the island is also a haven for traditional Korean culture, from the Jeju Folklore & Natural History Museum to the numerous restaurants serving up spicy seafood stew or barbecued black pork.

Created by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, the island is home to Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature for its unique and unspoiled beauty. You can explore the colorful lava tubes at Geomunoreum -- described by UNESCO as one of the finest systems of lava tube caves in the world -- or hike to the top of Mount Hallasan, the dormant volcano at the heart of the island that forms Korea's tallest mountain. During the hike, you can enjoy panoramic views of waterfalls, craters, and interesting basalt and lava rock formations as you go. Down at the shore, the beaches are the perfect place to relax under the warm sun or catch a glimpse of the diverse marine life with a snorkeling adventure in the clear waters.

Palawan, Philippines

The most sparsely populated region in the Philippines, Palawan is an archipelago of more than 1,700 islands of various sizes, stretching all the way to Borneo. It's often overshadowed by more popular destinations in the Philippines, such as Boracay, partly because it is relatively remote and harder to access -- the beautiful beaches of El Nido, for example, require a five-hour land transfer from Palawan's main airport. However, this tropical destination is well worth the effort it takes to travel there, and fewer tourists means that it better maintains its pristine natural beauty.

Known for its stunning limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and azure lagoons, Palawan is a paradise for nature lovers and divers. Head out to Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in the Sulu Sea for an incredible range of colorful corals, rare fish, and the chance to swim alongside turtles. You can also take a boat tour along the Puerto Princesa Underground River -- this UNESCO World Heritage site is a unique subterranean world of stalagmites, stalactites, and wildlife, including crabs, birds, and bats. If you'd rather explore under your own steam, try island-hopping by boat or kayak around Miniloc Island to look for secret lagoons and beaches, where you can swim or paddle through holes in the limestone rocks and discover a wonderful hidden world.

Gili Islands, Indonesia

If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and disconnect from technology, the Gili Islands are the perfect place with a slower pace. Thanks to the absence of motor vehicles, this tropical destination is the ideal environment for relaxation and unwinding. You can only get around on foot, bike, or by a traditional horse-drawn cart known as a cidomo. Located off the northwest coast of Lombock, these three tiny islands are the epitome of paradise and a world away from the touristy shores of nearby Bali.

Although each of the islands has a slightly different vibe, there's something they have in common -- some of the most beautiful beaches in Southeast Asia. White sandy shores stretch along the coastlines, and the calm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. For travelers seeking the most serene experience of all, the smallest of the three, Gili Meno, is the quietest and most tranquil. A little over a mile long, the island has a local population of around 500 inhabitants and even fewer tourists. Spend your days on the sand and your evenings sipping a drink at one of the handful of beach bars while admiring some of the world's most magical sunsets.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Raja Ampat is another stunning, and thoroughly unspoiled, tropical vacation spot in Indonesia. Part of West Papua Province, it is Indonesia's most eastern archipelago and consists of four main islands -- the name Raja Ampat translates to "'The Four Kings" -- as well as more than 1,500 smaller islands and cays. It is a paradise both above and below the water, with thick jungles on land and vibrant coral gardens below the surface of its vast ocean territory. According to the Nature Conservancy , over 75% of the world's marine species live in these millions of acres where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet, making the crystal-clear waters here a scuba diving heaven. You can encounter turtles, dolphins, lionfish, giant clams, manta rays, barracudas, shoals of tuna, and much more.

But it's not just the underwater sights that make Raja Ampat such a beautiful destination. It is also home to pristine stretches of sand, limestone karst formations, colorful birds-of-paradise, and incredible views over the scattered collections of atolls that dot the turquoise seas. There are also a diverse range of accommodation options, depending on your budget and preferences, from homestays in authentic bungalows and luxurious spas to liveaboard boats offering themed trips and excursions.

La Digue, Seychelles

Smaller and less crowded than the neighboring islands, La Digue is a haven of beautiful beaches, traditional Seychelles culture, and laid-back calm. Cars are carefully restricted here, meaning the island is almost motor-free, and the best way to explore is by renting a bicycle. Everything is within easy reach on two wheels, and you can immerse yourself in the slower pace of island-living for the duration of your stay. There isn't an airport, either, meaning that your first glimpse of this tropical paradise will be from the water on a boat ride from busier Praslin, and the palm tree-lined beaches, white sandy shores -- often completely devoid of footprints -- and distinctive granite boulders will take your breath away.

There are very few amenities and attractions on La Digue, but you won't need them. There's a range of simple yet comfortable accommodation options, such as traditional guest houses and small hotels, but it's all about sun, sea, and sand once you've settled in. Anse Source d'Argent is regularly considered one of the best beaches in the world and a must-see for vacationers to La Digue. This vast stretch of shimmering sand, which is easy to reach with a bike, is the ideal place to get away from it all and simply take in your surroundings.

Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Located approximately halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii, the beautiful Cook Islands should be on every tropical vacation bucket list. Yet Aitutaki, in the southernmost group of islands, is another destination that has been overshadowed by its more popular and famous neighbors, such as Rarotonga, and remains off the beaten path for many travelers. This romantic South Pacific paradise is formed on a triangular coral reef, with 15 little islets, known as "motus," that are scattered around a stunning turquoise lagoon.

Although it's a quieter alternative to more crowded Pacific destinations, Aitutaki doesn't skimp on luxury. There are boutique and luxury resorts with overwater bungalows offering direct access to the lagoon, private villas, and fine dining options. Unsurprisingly, Aitutaki is gaining a reputation as a honeymoon destination. After a hike up Maunga Pu, the main island's highest point, you'll have the best views over the water and atoll, allowing you to truly appreciate the seclusion and romance of this idyllic corner of the world. For ultimate seclusion, you can also hire a water taxi to set out across the lagoon to find your own private beach on one of the uninhabited islets or sandbars.

Andaman Islands, India

This remote string of islands in the Bay of Bengal is actually closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India. Set roughly 800 miles from India's mainland, the Andaman Islands receive far fewer visitors than other destinations in India -- but they're worth the effort, and the relatively low number of tourists is a big part of their appeal. The only point of entry is Port Blair, the capital of the islands, which is served by domestic flights from India, but from there, it's easy to hop aboard a boat or a catamaran in search of the incredible sugar-white beaches that make the Andaman Islands such a paradise.

The Andaman Islands offer world-class scuba diving as the tropical seas are a haven for sharks, rays, turtles, and schools of snapper; the islands are also home to India's only substantial coral reef system among the islets of Mahatma Gandhi National Marine Park. Although Havelock Island has the best range of accommodations and eateries, the smaller and more secluded spots have even more appeal. Highlights include Interview Island, a nature sanctuary, and the isolated Little Andaman, home to mangroves, teal waves, and excellent surfing.

Tofo Beach, Mozambique

Of all the tropical destinations on this list, Tofo Beach is the ideal one for budget travelers. It's been a popular spot with backpackers for a while, but it has remained sleepy and undeveloped -- and cheap. You can get real value for money at Fatima's Nest Hostel -- with bungalows and hammocks right on the sand -- or enjoy a slice of luxury on a modest budget as you can get a lot for your money here.

Despite Tofo's small size, there are plenty of dive operators offering snorkeling and scuba excursions, and Tofo is one of the only places on the planet where you can swim or dive with whale sharks year-round. On a longer vacation, you could also get certified and complete your PADI here among the diverse marine life. Stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, and kayaking are also popular ways to explore the bay and catch a glimpse of humpback whales or a turtle swimming alongside you. Afterward, enjoy a local rum or sample hearty curries in one of the laid-back bars that line the edge of the beach.

San Blas Islands, Panama

Located off the northwest of Panama, in the Caribbean Sea, the San Blas Islands are about as close to cast-away fantasies as you can possibly get -- pristine beaches, warm water, shady coconut palms, and hardly any other people. Many islands are completely uninhabited, while others are home to the indigenous Guna people, who have protected their islands fiercely from mass tourism, and continue to carefully control the access and numbers of visitors each day. This ensures that the islands have remained completely unspoiled and a haven for their traditional way of life. Accommodations typically include eco-friendly lodges, made from local natural materials, and the common method of transportation is by charter boat and traditional canoe.

Because of the lack of tourist infrastructure, this isn't the place for travelers seeking boutique resorts or lots of facilities; but if you want to truly switch off from modern life and immerse yourself in the basic tranquility of this tropical paradise, there may be no better place on the planet. Take plenty of books with you -- and a torch, for when the generator is turned off in the evenings -- and simply enjoy the bliss. At night, without light pollution, you can see an incredible number of stars, and the ocean's bioluminescence can seem equally unworldly.

Pemba Island, Tanzania

Although Zanzibar is a bucket list destination in Africa for many, most tourists head to the largest island, Unguja, and so Pemba, its smaller sister, has remained a hidden gem. As it is just off the beaten path, Pemba offers a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere, as well as a host of authentic experiences. There are several stunning architectural sites to visit, such as the ancient tombs of Ras Mkumbuu and the ancient ruined town of Chakawa, both nestled in the verdant jungle. The main town, Chake Chake, is also home to the Pemba Museum, where you can learn about the local history and culture that has been influenced by mainland Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.

In the local markets, the island's inhabitants are eager to invite you to try the fresh fruits and produce. The Zanzibar archipelago has long been known as the "spice islands," and you can visit spice farms or book a cookery lesson to find out more about the history of the spice trade and how the products are grown on the island today. Pemba also has a strong local reputation for magic and the spices play a role in the medicines and spells of the ju-ju traditions.

Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity, and the Nicoya Peninsula is no exception. It may have a slower pace of life than some of the country's more touristy hotspots, but it is home to just as many beautiful beaches and wildlife-rich rainforests. Stretching out into the Pacific Ocean, the relatively narrow, 80-mile-long peninsula is dotted with small bays and islets, with most of its towns concentrated along the coast. Depending on the shape and geographical positioning of the beaches, you can enjoy a wide variety of activities: snorkeling and swimming in calm seas, as well as bodyboarding and surfing. In fact, Santa Teresa, on the northern tip of the peninsula, is considered one of the best surf towns in Latin America .

The Nicoya Peninsula has also been identified as one of the world's "Blue Zones" -- an area where people live measurably healthier, longer lives than they do elsewhere. As a result, it has become a hub for yoga and wellness, attracting practitioners and enthusiasts from all over the world. Thanks to the serene environment and connection to nature, the small, laid-back towns of Nosara and Mal Pais are ideal places to visit if you want to take part in a spot of yoga and meditation, with everything from week-long retreats to hour-long classes on offer.
