The Grand Tour announces penultimate episode and confirms release date

The boys are headed to Mauritania!

For their penultimate adventure, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are off to Africa and it'll no doubt be an outing to remember.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job will see the trio head to the remote African country of Mauritania, where they follow in the footsteps of the Paris-Dakar rally – but, of course, there is a twist.

The group must complete their journey in cheap modified sports cars instead of bespoke Dakar racers, beginning with the world's longest train.

Battling scorching temperatures and unforgiving sand terrain, filming this special was a true test for both the presenters and their cars.

The episode will be available to watch on Prime Video on Friday 16th February , and comes after the news that Jeremy Clarkson has made the decision to quit the series .

In an interview with The Times , Clarkson explained that his reason for leaving the show was largely down to having already "done everything you can do" when it comes to cars.

He said: "I've driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else. We’ve done everything you can do with a car. When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air."

When does the final episode of ‘The Grand Tour’ season 5 come out?

Mateusz Miter

Fans of The Grand Tour are highly anticipating the release of the show’s fourth and final episode of season 5, which takes place in Zimbabwe. Emotions will be at an all-time high since it’s the end of the show.

For over 20 years, the unforgettable trio of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have entertained millions of fans around the world with shows revolving around cars. It was first known as Top Gear and aired on BBC before the trio was acquired by Amazon in 2016. Now, after eight wonderful years with the studio, the trio is set to finish the series once and for all, and it will all come to a head in episode 4 of season 5.

A few details about the upcoming episode are known. For starters, we’re certain it’s taking Clarkson , May, and Hammond back to Africa. This time they will be exploring Zimbabwe, for which the filming took place in September last year. A fair amount of time has passed since then, so we’re bound to know the release date of the episode, right?

When will ‘The Grand Tour’s season 5, episode 4 be released?

Unfortunately, as of June, we’re yet to know the exact release date of the latest episode of The Grand Tour . Amazon did reveal that the final outing will premiere in 2024, though the studio hasn’t shed any further details.

The previous, penultimate episode named The Grand Tour: Sand Job took place in Mauritania and saw the three hosts take a trip through the Sahara desert. It released in February, and only increased fans’ appetite for one last ride together.

Unluckily, all we can do for now is wait patiently. If you’re like us and don’t like sitting and just waiting, we’d advise you to rewatch all the previous episodes of The Grand Tour . We are certainly doing that before we have to say one final goodbye to Clarkson, May, and Hammond.

The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed why it’s the end of the road for The Grand Tour . Clarkson said he and co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, decided to quit the Amazon Prime Video show after running out of steam.

In an interview with The Times of London , Clarkson said it was becoming increasingly difficult to conjure up outlandish adventures for the show and that the presenters were all showing their age.

He added that The Grand Tour missions are “immensely physical” and had become increasingly difficult when “you’re unfit and fat and old.” “If you’re Bear Grylls you go to a hotel — there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara desert,” Clarkson said.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May confirmed last November that they had filmed their final installments of  The Grand Tour . Two final episodes of the motoring series were recorded in Mauritania and Zimbabwe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

Fozia Khan, Amazon Studios’ head of unscripted in the UK, said the brand could survive with another set of presenters. “It’s come to its natural end,” she said, adding that her team was “thinking about” how the show can live on.

Clarkson will continue to host Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon after the series has become the streamer’s highest-rated UK original. Filming on Season 4 is set to begin this year. Clarkson is also hosting more Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for ITV.

The Times interviewer Ed Potton wrote that he was told not to ask Clarkson about his reviled The Sun newspaper column about Meghan Markle. Clarkson wrote that he imagines the day Markle is paraded “naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” The piece was retracted and Amazon made clear its fury at the article.

Asked if he feels under pressure to be controversial, Clarkson said: “No! I like being controversial. Some people who see a still pond find that peaceful, but I cannot resist throwing a stone in it.”

The Grand Tour hosts wanted total ‘control’ of how the show ends

Richard hammond speaks with yahoo uk about the prime video series almost reaching the end of the road.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Sticking the landing is difficult to achieve in the entertainment industry, and more often than not shows can outstay their welcome and end things on a sour note — but not The Grand Tour , not on Richard Hammond , Jeremy Clarkson and James May ’s watch.

Hammond spoke with Yahoo UK about bringing the series to a close for Origin Story , and he admits it was always the plan to end it “when, where and how” they wanted. This begins with the Prime Video show’s penultimate special Sand Job , which premiered on the platform on Friday, 16 February.

“The key thing on that whole issue, [is] we had decided years ago that we wanted to be in control,” Hammond explains.

“Having set off on this incredible adventure that none of us thought would ever come our way, we all wanted to be the ones —and I don't just mean us three, all of us— to decide when and where and how we landed it, and we have done. But that isn't uppermost in our minds yet because we haven't finished.”

That’s because Hammond, Clarkson and May are very much still hard at work on their final special for The Grand Tour. The final farewell will see the trio travel to Zimbabwe for one last adventure, and although filming finished last year it isn’t yet the end for them.

“We've worked together a very long time and been lucky to share some simply incredible experiences that none of us ever thought would come our way,” Hammond adds. “And not just share them with our mates but share them with a global audience which, again, we never thought we'd have the opportunity to do.

“We're still right now in the process of doing that, these films are enormous, and they are films really.

"We're an enormous crew, it's a huge combined effort to make that so when we bring back the thousands of hours of footage, when we call wrap at the end of the shoot, that isn't the end of the job.” Richard Hammond

Hammond explains that it is “a huge process” to deliver the high quality shows that fans are accustomed to. That means the trio —who became iconic after their time presenting on Top Gear together before they moved on to The Grand Tour— have a lot to do before they look towards what’s next.

“It's still a huge process to get it assembled and made before it's done, so we're still in that process,” he says. “We're delivering this one [as] it's all come together and finally the voiceovers [are] down and the picture is graded, locked and delivered.

“Then for a while we're gonna be sitting back, desperate to see what do people think, ‘did it work? Did we capture the spirit where we went?’ So that'll occupy us for a while yet.” Richard Hammond

Hammond goes on: “We're still in the process of making the next one, we've shot it but we're gonna [finish] it. That will occupy us, so really our attention hasn't turned to anything that follows until we get there.”

The Grand Tour Is Ending – The End Of An Era As Top Gear Finishes Too

The iconic motoring shows, ‘The Grand Tour’ and ‘Top Gear,’ are reaching their final laps, marking the end of a significant era in automotive television. As Jeremy Clarkson , James May , and Richard Hammond conclude their journey with ‘The Grand Tour,’ the BBC has also decided to put ‘Top Gear’ on hold.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Grand Tour Finale: Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have wrapped up filming their last episode of ‘The Grand Tour’ after seven years on Amazon Prime. The final special, filmed in Zimbabwe, is set to air next year.
  • Top Gear on Hiatus: Following an accident involving presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, the BBC has announced that ‘Top Gear’ will not be returning “for the foreseeable future.” The network is considering options for a new version of the show.
  • Evolution and Controversy: The trio started with ‘Top Gear’ in 2003, making it a global success despite controversies. After leaving the BBC in 2015, they joined Amazon Prime, where ‘The Grand Tour’ became a hit. Other projects by the hosts, including Clarkson’s Farm and May’s Our Man In… , continue on Amazon.

The automotive world is witnessing the end of an era with the conclusion of two of its most iconic shows: The Grand Tour and Top Gear. After a thrilling seven-year journey on Amazon Prime, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have filmed their final episode of The Grand Tour. The trio, known for their dynamic chemistry and adventurous spirits, recently returned from Zimbabwe, where they shot the last special, scheduled to be released next year.

grand tour is

The end of The Grand Tour aligns with the news of ‘Top Gear’ taking an indefinite break. The BBC’s decision comes in the wake of presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff’s accident during filming last year. The network is exploring options for a new incarnation of the show, acknowledging the need for a refreshed approach in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Clarkson, May, and Hammond have been synonymous with Top Gear since 2003, steering the show to immense popularity globally. Despite its success, the show wasn’t without its controversies, most notably leading to Clarkson’s departure from the BBC in 2015 following a dispute. Hammond and May followed suit, paving the way for their next venture with Amazon Prime and the birth of The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour has enjoyed five successful series, becoming one of Amazon’s best-performing original series. Its format, coupled with the hosts’ unique blend of humour, insight, and adventure, captivated a vast audience, making it a staple in automotive entertainment.

Beyond The Grand Tour, Clarkson, May, and Hammond have not slowed down. Their individual projects, such as Clarkson’s Farm and Our Man In… by May, continue to entertain and inform on Amazon Prime.

As fans prepare to bid farewell to these groundbreaking shows, the impact and legacy of The Grand Tour and Top Gear remain indelible in the world of motoring entertainment. Their departure signals not just the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter in automotive broadcasting.

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown: release date, trailer and new episodes explained

What we know about the show's Scotland and Russia specials

The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour season 4, episode 3 is coming on July 30, Amazon has confirmed – and it'll take co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to Scotland in a special called Lochdown. The episode was actually filmed in 2020, mid-pandemic, so hopefully we won't have to wait too long to see it. The special will imitate the feeling of an American road trip – without actually requiring the British hosts to leave their country.

There's a first trailer for The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown, too, which you can see below.

There's more good news if you're a fan of The Grand Tour Presents: a new episode has been filming this year in Wales and parts of England like Warwickshire. This dovetails with what James May said in an interview last year about filming more episodes closer to home in an effort to release them more regularly. Given how languid the releases have become lately – a year separated the release of the last two specials, Seamen and A Massive Hunt – that will come as a relief.

Below, we'll tell you everything we know about the future of The Grand Tour Presents on Amazon Prime – including details about the Scotland-based Lochdown special, what we know about the new UK episode as it films, and what happened to the lost Russia special that was originally set to follow A Massive Hunt.

  • Best Amazon Prime Video shows
  • Best streaming services compared
  • Best Netflix shows

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown release date is July 30, 2021

The next special in The Grand Tour Presents series is called Lochdown – and it just got a release date of July 30 on Amazon Prime Video. Check out the trailer in the section below for confirmation.

That's not all that's coming from Clarkson and pals in the foreseeable future, though.

As of April 2021, another special for The Grand Tour was filming in the UK – the three hosts were spotted filming in Llandrindod Wells, Wales, by The Grand Tour Fans YouTube channel . They were each driving classic French cars, which hints a little at the theme for the episode. Jeremy Clarkson was apparently spotted driving a Citroën CX Break, James May was glimpsed in a Renault Avantime, while Richard Hammond was reportedly in a Matra Murena, according to the channel. Later, the hosts were spot in Leamington in England, filming near a retail park.

That episode seems like it's probably a while away, though. Let's go through what we know about the Lochdown special's filming, first. A first teaser for that episode was released on social media earlier this year – Clarkson describes the special as The Grand Tour 'unplugged'.

Earlier plans to record an episode in Russia were put on-hold because of the pandemic (see below) – so the Lochdown special was filmed in Scotland across nine days earlier in 2020 instead.

"We did it in area of Scotland with not many people," co-host James May told BT . "We didn’t interact with the locals really. There were complicated systems set up for cleaning everything and it was a bit tiresome going through lots of procedures and being tested every day, but it didn’t get in the way of filming to be honest."

The hosts couldn't go to the pub after filming the episode, which must've been a challenge.

While it might be a long wait until the trio and their crew can head to more exotic locations, the intent is to keep making episodes in locations where it's easier to pull off – hence why a Wales-filmed special probably makes sense. "In the short term we might have to reduce our travel ambitions and we’ll have a better chance of doing it," May says. "Better to film in the UK and deliver regularly than promise the earth and not deliver anything. The Grand Tour may become a little more domestic. But it will still be us three which is the important thing. And cars."

That bodes well for the future – and who knows, maybe we'll start seeing episodes of The Grand Tour season 4 land more regularly than once every year again.

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown trailer

Och aye the new trailer for The Grand Tour Presents... #Lochdown is here pic.twitter.com/0eobci0wpL July 15, 2021

Check out the trailer for The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown above, which was released in July 2021.

To film the upcoming Scotland special during the pandemic, the crew formed a bubble, and no one caught Covid-19 during the shoot. It was reported that the hosts were seen driving classic American cars from Edinburgh to the Hebrides – which suggests some kind of Route 66-style road trip element.

Clarkson was seen driving a blue Lincoln, May was seen driving a red Cadillac, and Hammond was seen in a green Buick. The trio also took part in a drag race on a runway somewhere in south Scotland, for which the cars mentioned were apparently modified, and were seen towing caravans at one point too.

May says that being a bit closer to the home for the hosts doesn't matter that much – after all, viewers on Amazon Prime Video could be watching it from anywhere. "If you're watching The Grand Tour from Sri Lanka, Scotland is as exotic and beautiful as Sri Lanka is from Scotland, so there's always going to be a large part of the audience which finds anywhere in the world fascinating."

And hey, anything that gets the hosts to film new episodes faster seems like a good thing.

The Grand Tour season 4 Russia special: what we know

The next planned episode for The Grand Tour Presents was meant to take the hosts to Russia – and this is still the idea, one day. It's just been postponed for now due to the pandemic. James May says that lots of preparation has been made for this special, but that it's "just impossible right now". Hopefully, with the incoming wave of vaccines, that might be able to change in future – but it seems unlikely you'll see a Russia special of The Grand Tour at any point in the next year or so.

After the next UK special, though, Clarkson did confirm the plan was to film abroad – they're just not sure where yet.

Jeremy clarkson reveals why the grand tour is ending.

Mike Bartholomew headshot

Back in November last year, we heard that The Grand Tour would be coming to an end after a further two specials are released this year, bringing the show to a close after nearly eight years, and wrapping up over 20 years of car TV fronted by Jeremy Clarkson , James May and Richard Hammond .

Now, in an interview with The Times, Clarkson has revealed more about his decision to wind things up, saying that filming the show is “immensely physical… when you’re unfit and fat and old, which I am.”

In 2019, the show ditched the episodic studio format it had run with for the first three seasons to concentrate on producing feature-length ‘specials’ involving epic journeys in the style of the old Top Gear specials. With these, the show has visited exotic and far-flung places such as the Mekong Delta, Madagascar, the Arctic Circle and, erm… Scotland.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jeremy Clarkson (@jeremyclarkson1)

The upcoming final episodes have been filmed in the African nations of Mauritania and Zimbabwe, respectively, and will both stream at some point in 2024. Clarkson, 63, mentions camping in the Sahara Desert in Mauritania as being particularly brutal: “If you’re Bear Grylls you got to a hotel - there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara.”

He also says that the show is effectively running out of fresh ideas: “I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else. We’ve done everything you can do with a car.”

As well as shedding some light on his childhood and how he takes a certain amount of delight in causing controversy, Clarkson throws in his two cents on electric cars and the future of automotive broadcasting: “James May thinks there’s never been a more interesting time for how we move around… but I don’t think it’s very good television. An electric car is no different from a chest freezer or a microwave oven. There’s no glamour or excitement… I think it suits the written media more.”

Clarkson's Farm

Of course, the end of The Grand Tour doesn’t quite mean the end of Clarkson, Hammond and May on TV, as each is continuing with their solo projects. A third series of Clarkson’s Farm is on the way, and he confirms he’s about to start shooting the fourth. May, meanwhile, is continuing with his Our Man In… travel series. There are of course, still those two final specials to look forward to.

Favorites for Stage 9 of the 2024 Tour de France | Grand gravel bonanza could go any direction!

I f there's one stage of the Tour de France that has been a hot topic for the past six months, it's this ninth stage in and around Troyes. This is the renowned gravel stage, which has sparked much discussion in the lead-up to the Tour de France. The day has arrived, and IDLProCycling.com is eager to preview it!

Route stage 9 Tour de France 2024

This will be quite a stage, to say the least. Starting in Troyes, the riders will embark on a 199-kilometer course featuring fourteen gravel sections, totaling 32 kilometers, and approximately 2000 meters of elevation gain. It's a stage unlike any we've seen before in the Tour de France, although the 2022 Tour de France Femmes also ventured into the Troyes area, which resulted in spectacular racing back then as well.

Alright, what’s on the menu? From Troyes, the riders head towards Laubressel, Géraudot, and Bligny, where the first gravel section appears after 44 kilometers. Not that the earlier phase will be calm: all teams, all leaders, all domestiques, and all ambitious riders will want to position themselves at the front to protect their chances. This will obviously create a very nervous peloton, reacting to the slightest incident.

The first section has received one star, but the second section ramps up to the maximum rating of three stars for this stage. This is the Baroville section, which is particularly interesting: once the gravel ends, the riders will begin the first climb of the day. The Côte de Bergères (1.7 kilometers at 5.2 percent) might prove to be an ideal spot for an early explosion of action.

After that, there’s about thirty kilometers of gravel-free riding, although the intermediate sprint in Fontette is still on the agenda. At Hauts-Forets, just over a hundred kilometers from the finish, we begin the third gravel section. They follow each other in quick succession, with the Celles-sur-Ource section potentially being the toughest of the day. This section lies between two climbs and is quite long at 3.4 kilometers.

After this section, we’ll see what the riders are made of, as the course continues to go up and down both in terms of elevation and terrain: gravel, no gravel, uphill, downhill, twists, and turns. As an attacker, you can quickly disappear from sight; as a dropped rider, you might lose sight of the others through the dust. For the spectators, this could be an epic stage, but we understand that riders and team leaders who have been preparing all year for this race might approach it with some trepidation.

After Magnant, there are still about 55 kilometers to the finish, of which approximately fifteen are on gravel. The wind will be slightly against the riders, which favors the groups that can still cooperate. Nevertheless, it will remain a matter of moving from section to section, much like in Paris-Roubaix.

One conclusion can already be drawn: those who reach the front in Troyes will be very pleased. The finale in the city center is quite technical, with a chicane one kilometer from the finish. But that will be minor compared to a day like this, where you have to show grit on the gravel.

51.7 km: CÔTE DE BERGÈRES (1.7 km at 5.2%)

69.6 km: CÔTE DE BAROVILLE (2.8 km at 4.8%)

107.5 km:CÔTE DE VAL FRION (2.2 km at 5.0%)

121.2 km: CÔTE DE CHACENAY (3.0 km at 4.3%)

Start: 1:35 p.m.

Finish: around 6 p.m.

Weather stage 9 Tour de France 2024

The crucial question for a gravel stage is, of course: rain or no rain? We can answer this quite briefly, as there is virtually no chance of precipitation. There will be a light breeze from the southeast, and the temperature will be around 23 degrees Celsius.

Favorites stage 9 Tour de France 2024

Where do we even begin? This stage can go in any direction. For the stage victory, we initially think of riders who don’t have to look out for a general classification contender. The first name that comes to mind is our own world champion, Mathieu van der Poel . If there is one stage he would love to win, it's this one.

However, Van der Poel is certainly not the only rider at Alpecin-Deceuninck capable of winning this stage. The team also boasts fast men like Jasper Philipsen and Axel Laurance, former gravel world champion Gianni Vermeersch, and powerhouse Soren Kragh Andersen. Clearly, this is a team to watch.

We have more of this type. For instance, Lotto-Dstny is looking for a stage win with Maxim Van Gils and Arnaud De Li e. Lidl-Trek, after the withdrawal of Mads Pedersen, will also need to refocus, which they can do in this stage with European gravel champion Jasper Stuyven and Strade Bianche podium finisher Toms Skujins. Intermarché-Wanty can continue to ride the wave they're on with the green jersey of Biniam Girmay and his teammates Laurenz Rex, Mike Teunissen, and Hugo Page.

The Big Four will also dread this stage, though we wonder if Tadej Pogacar might secretly want to make a strong move here. The two-time winner of Strade Bianche feels at home on gravel, so it's up to Jonas Vingegaard's Visma | Lease a Bike team to keep a close eye on him. The chances of Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte might also align with this strategy.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) will be torn before the stage. On one hand, they fear losing time, but on the other hand, they have the one-day race skills to make an impact themselves. Both riders have strong teams to support them.

Looking further at the teams that can go all-in, we see Groupama-FDJ ( Stefan Küng , Romain Gregoire , and Valentin Madouas), Movistar (Oier Lazkano and Alex Aranburu ), EF Education-EasyPost ( Alberto Bettiol , Neilson Powless, and Ben Healy), Uno-X ( Rasmus Tiller and Jonas Abrahamsen), and Arkéa - B&B Hotels (Kévin Vauquelin).

And then there are the teams looking to play both sides. Will gravel world champion Matej Mohoric get the freedom at Bahrain Victorious from Santiago Buitrago and Pello Bilbao? Should Tom Pidcock help Carlos Rodríguez get through the stage for INEOS Grenadiers? What about Michael Matthews, who has Simon Yates at Jayco AlUla and doesn't seem to be in top form?

Two years ago, Simon Clarke surprised everyone by winning the Paris-Roubaix stage, but can teams like TotalEnergies, Decathlon AG2R, Israel-Premier Tech, Cofidis, Astana, and dsm-firmenich PostNL pull off a surprise now? It would have to be through an early breakaway, but that seems difficult to establish with such a short run-up phase. Well, we'll know by 6:00 PM on Sunday evening!

Favorites stage 9 Tour de France 2024, according to In the Leader's Jersey

Top favorites: Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny)

Outsiders: Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike), Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates), Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) and Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny)

Long shots : Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost), Alex Aranburu (Movistar), Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Romain Gregoire, Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) and Rasmus Tiller (Uno-X)

design drive: all-electric lotus emeya hyper grand tour from munich to austria

Lotus emeya’s first drive.

Close your eyes and imagine a hypercar touring across the Austrian Alps; hear the engine’s roar and the tires squeal around the chicanes, even before you catch sight of its aerodynamically-sculpted form with the spoiler raised, sunlight glinting off its sharp lines, air intakes, and flaming exhausts. Enter the Lotus Emeya hyper-GT. The performance-driven car is all-new and, more importantly, all-electric . As designboom embarked on an electric grand tour from Munich, Germany to the Austrian Alps, the hills came alive with the sound of electric instead: no engine roar, just as much tire screeching, and gasps of excitement from driver, passengers, and the lucky onlookers.

all images courtesy of Lotus

The Lotus Emeya, an all-new and all-electric hyper-GT, might seem a bold evolution for the British brand , renowned for its agile, performance-oriented two-seaters. Now with four doors, the Emeya encapsulates 75 years of Lotus DNA in a modern, more eco-conscious package. Its design roots, though, trace back to a 1980 request from founder Colin Chapman for Paolo Martin, the designer famed for his work with Pininfarina on the Ferrari 512 Modulo and Fiat 130 Coupe, to create a four-door GT concept, called the Lotus 2000 Eminence. The boldness of Martin’s vision – an ultra-sleek sedan – pushed Ben Payne, Vice-President of Design at Lotus Group, and his team to go further.

hyperstance exterior design

The ‘hyperstance’ proportions were the starting point of the Emeya’s design. A low center of gravity is immediately noticed with its cab-forward silhouette. Short overhangs give the impression that the wheels are at the corners, complemented by bold muscular arches reminiscent of the Lotus 11 – a favorite of Ben Payne. Mass is visually reduced thanks to its darkened ‘canopy’, but the real triumph is the clean surfaces that emphasize its overall dynamic, continuous, and agile design. The only disruptions are the series of ducts to allow optimal air flow and a single line flowing from its sharp front to rear’s blade of light.

Its single line is reminiscent of Lotus models from the 1980s, recapturing the aesthetic of earlier mid-engined designs from the brand. It gives a strikingly modern yet unmistakable Lotus look. The ultra-narrow LED light bar runs across the rear, forming an intelligent taillight that loops from the air ducts side-to-side. The rear is then topped by a unique dual air wing spoiler.

driver cockpit of technology and luxury

Inside, the Emeya transforms its exterior blade of light into a ribbon of technology. The LED runs around the cabin, creating a cocoon for the driver and passengers, and relaying key information on the section running across the dashboard. A 15.1-inch OLED touchscreen dominates the center console, dubbed the digital cockpit. An expansive augmented reality head-up display (HUD) completes the technologically-driven cockpit, curating all performance indicators right in front of the driver at all times.

Despite its technological enhancements, the interior is undoubtedly a driver’s car. All control buttons are ergonomically positioned on the steering wheel, and are real switches made with performance materials for satisfying haptic feedback. Knurled metal and exposed carbon fiber are used for other interior touchpoints, continuing Colin Chapman’s famous passion for reducing weight everywhere. Advanced luxury materials were also chosen for lightness, creating a luxury thread made from repurposed fibers from the fashion industry.

lotus’ electric performance

The hyper GT’s hyper technology extends into driving performance too. Its onboard systems can complete up to 25 trillion operations in the same amount of time it takes the human brain to identify an image – approximately 50 milliseconds. Data from 34 surround sensors are processed 30 times a second, offering 360-degree perception with no blind spots. Four deployable LiDARs – seen as the ‘eyes of the car’ like classic car’s pop-up headlights – help detect obstacles up to 200m away in every direction, reconstructing a virtual environment and aiding elements like the electronically controlled air suspension system to deliver as true a road feel as possible.

Powered by an 800-volt, 102 kWH lithium-ion battery pack, the Lotus Emeya performs as quick and agile as the brand is famed for. It accelerates from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in under 2.8 seconds, racing up to a top speed of more than 155mph (250km/h) possible on Germany’s Autobahns. For grand tours, it can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes when connected to a 350kW DC fast charger. The battery pack’s position between the wheels gives it a low center of gravity to match its aesthetic, zipping along mountain passes with ease.

As the Lotus Emeya hyper-GT glides on its first drive through the scenic routes from Germany to Austria, it embodies the next chapter for the British brand. The all-electric model pays homage to Lotus’ fabled racing past while announcing a more sustainable, technological future. Importantly, its design remains as exciting as ever for driver, passengers, and those lucky onlookers.
