Stewart ross.

Prize-winning author Stewart Ross was inspired to write by his great-grandfather, a vast Scotsman with a spreading beard. After teaching all over the world, Stewart became a full-time author in 1989. He has had some 350 books published, fiction and nonfiction for adults and children. His recent work includes The Hologram short stories, Queen Elizabeth II for Dummies, two books on Sherlock Holmes and the acclaimed utopian-dystopia trilogy of novels, The Soterion Mission, Revenge of the Zeds and The Salvation Project. He also writes plays, lyrics and articles. As well as teaching drama and writing at ICES, France, he mentors Exeter University students, is writer in residence at The Canterbury Academy, and chairs the Canterbury Commemoration Society. He lives near Canterbury with his wife and four occasional children. Each morning he commutes ten metres to work in a large hut in the garden.

Unfolding Journeys: Rocky Mountain Explorer

Over the past six years, we’ve gotten to know the highway between Vancouver and Calgary very well. We drive through the Rocky Mountains and Okanagan about twice a year. Despite this, I’ve realized the girls have a very limited sense of the geography along the way. They often ask questions about the “island of Alberta” or suggest that taking the ferry there might be faster. Unfolding Journeys: Rocky Mountain Explorer is an awesome resource for talking about this part of Canada.

The map follows the path of the Rocky Mountaineer Train from Vancouver past Kamloops and Mount Robson to Jasper National Park . Readers are then invited to “hop on a bus” to travel down the Icefields Parkway to Calgary. It covers the most scenic stops along the way, though if we’re heading from Vancouver to Calgary we don’t usually detour through Jasper.

One of our favourite landmarks along the highway is the Animal Overpasses in Banff National Park. The girls love counting the overpasses as we go through! It gives them something to watch for along the way. Unfolding Journeys: Rocky Mountain Explorer says this about the overpasses:

Problem: What do you do when the country’s major road (the Trans-Canada Highway) cuts through one of the country’s main wildlife reserves (the Banff National Park)? Answer A: Erect tall, steel fences beside the road. Answer B: Build six wildlife overpasses and 38 wildlife underpasses so that animals can cross the road safely. Thankfully, answer B was the winner here. Coyotes, black bears and cougars were the quickest to learn how to use the crossings. Then the deer, elk and moose caught on. It took longer for grizzlies and wolves to get the message, but they got there in the end. Thank goodness.

Whether you’re traveling via train, bus, car, or armchair, Unfolding Journeys: Rocky Mountain Explorer is an excellent resource for kids . I packed it in the girls’ activity box for our drive back to Alberta this Christmas. They were able to follow along with the route and share fun facts about where we were driving. In fact, it’s easy to turn this atlas into a road trip game! Kids can take turns quizzing each other about facts on the map.

We’ll definitely be packing this kids’ atlas for future road trips to Alberta. It should help prevent the age-old question: “Are we there yet?” The girls will be able to follow along on the map and answer the questions themselves! They can also add destinations from the map to their road trip notebooks as we roll along the highway.

One of the journey highlights is the two-day trip on the fabulous Rocky Mountaineer between Jasper and Vancouver.  Enjoy gourmet meals on board, and spot Canadian wildlife from your seat or from the open-air viewing platform. Knowledgeable and friendly attendants will keep you engaged with stories and facts about the region.

Witness the stunning views along Thompson River and the beauty of Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Visit the glacial-fed aquamarine waters of Lake Louise and the majesty of the natural bridge over Kicking Horse River.  Ride the Banff Gondola, tour the Athabasca Glacier (one of the largest accumulations of ice and snow south of the Arctic Circle) on an Ice Explorer, and enjoy time spent at IRT’s — and our clients’ — very favorite accommodations.

Day 1: calgary to banff.

Upon arrival in Calgary, you will be met by your private driver for a 1.5-2 hour transfer to the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel . Enjoy the afternoon and evening at leisure. You’ll have 3 nights in this quaint mountain town.

Day 2: Discover Banff and Its Wildlife

Learn about the people, geology and wildlife while exploring the spectacular sights of the renowned mountain town of Banff. This private touring excursion is highlighted with a journey on the Banff Gondola for a 360º view of six mountain ranges that surround the town. After a brief stop at Lake Minnewanka, you’ll be returned to your hotel.

Highlights: Bow Falls, Tunnel Mountain Drive, Hoodoo’s, Surprise Corner, Lake Minnewanka Loop, Two Jack viewpoint, Banff Gondola.

Day 3: Banff to Lake Louise

Enjoy breakfast before you meet your private transfer driver to be whisked away to the stunning Lake Louise. Often described as the crown jewel of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the striking turquoise waters of Lake Louise, Alberta, are perhaps the most photographed in all of Canada.

Enjoy a Traditional English High Tea with champagne while enjoying the scenic views of the lake.

Your evening is at leisure.

Day 4: Lake Louise to Jasper

Breakfast included today. Your private sightseeing tour will encompass the ultimate glacier exploration as you travel along the spectacular Icefields Parkway. From walking on ancient ice at the Glacier Adventure (included), to standing on a glass platform almost one thousand feet in the air at the Glacier Skywalk (included), today’s experiences will leave you with a special appreciation for this treasured region of the Rockies. The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle and one of the most accessible icefields in North America. (Gourmet picnic lunch included today.)

Arrive in Jasper early this evening.

Day 5: Jasper nature touring

After your included breakfast, enjoy a private half-day tour of Jasper National Park, a World Heritage Site and the Canadian Rockies’ largest national park. See the area’s many natural attractions, rugged peaks, and wildlife – such as coyotes, deer, elk, big-horned sheep, moose, mountain goats, and wolves. And again, you set the time for departure and the pace — since it is a private tour.

The remainder of the day is free for you to explore Jasper on your own — or relax in your lovely suite.

Day 6: Jasper to Kamloops

This morning, you will be privately transferred to the Rocky Mountaineer station to board the train. Enjoy a full day on board the Rocky Mountaineer en route to Kamloops, with a gourmet breakfast and lunch served in the beautiful dining level. Today’s highlights include Mt. Robson (at 12,972 feet, highest peak in Canadian Rockies), Pyramid Falls, Yellowhead Pass, and the journey along the North Thompson River into Kamloops.

Arrive late evening and be transferred to your hotel.

Accommodations: Kamloops hotel . (Please note that all accommodation in Kamloops is considered moderate.)

Day 7: Kamloops to Vancouver

Board the Rocky Mountaineer for another exciting full day on board. Continue west towards the Pacific Ocean and the coastal city of Vancouver. Pass through Rainbow Canyon, named for its cliffs striped with pinks, greens and greys creating a stunning rainbow effect. View the rushing waters of Hell’s Gate and traverse the fertile farming region of the Fraser Valley.

When you arrive in Vancouver late this evening, you will be met by your private driver and transferred to a modern icon of Vancouver, the Fairmont Pacific Rim . Consider dining in the hotel’s Michelin-recommended onsite dining.

Day 8: Vancouver

After your included breakfast this morning, your tour ends with a private transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Rocky Mountain Mule Recipe

Created by : Cori O’Connor, Bartender, Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ and Taphouse, Longmont, CO.

• 2 ounces Tin Cup whiskey
• 1/2 ounce Leopold Bros Rocky Mountain Blackberry Liqueur
• 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
• Ginger beer
• Lime wedge, candied ginger and fresh blackberry, for garnish

Directions:

• Add first three ingredients to a Moscow Copper Co. copper mug.
• Fill with ice and top with ginger beer.
• Garnish with a lime wedge, candied ginger and a fresh blackberry.

Inspiration:

The Rocky Mountain Mule is inspired by fresh mountain air and snow capped peaks. Great Colorado spirits like Tin Cup whiskey and Leopoldo Bros. blackberry liqueur really shine in this drink, and will give all those who try it a little taste of the Rockies.
