Hasegawa 1/48 Voyager Space Probe Build Review

By chuck holte.

Two Voyager Space Probes were launched in 1977 to document their "Grand Tour" of our solar system and beyond.  The 1,600 pound Voyager payload, built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, was launched on 5 Sep 77 from Cape Canaveral, Florida atop a Titan-Centaur booster. Voyager, traveling at up to 38,000 miles per hour, completed is assigned mission in our solar system and is now racing into interstellar space. Several of the onboard mission systems are still collecting data and sending it back to earth.  The "energizer bunny" of space probes is now more than 11.6 billion miles from earth and has traveled deeper into space than any other man-made object.

Build Review

The editor's first look at this kit can be found here .

I typically model in smaller scales, but couldn't resist building one of  the most unique and fascinating space probes of our time, even if it had to be in 1/48 scale.  I found the kit to be well engineered, accurate and relatively easy to assemble.  The black and white, eight page, 12 step instructions are in English and Kanji and identify the various mission systems by name.  Two of the 12 pages contain nice six-view drawings of the spacecraft with painting instructions.  Decals were not included (or needed).

I mostly followed the recommended modular instruction process.  Several aftermarket manufacturers offer PE sets to replace some of the more intricate, but solid molded parts, such as the instrument boom and the long magnetometer boom.  I elected to use the Eduard PE set # 48761 , which I think made a significant improvement in the appearance of the finished model.

I painted most everything as I completed the modules called out on the instruction sheet using mostly rattle can Tamiya paints: Fine Surface Primer (White), Semi-Gloss Black (TS-29) and Mica Silver (TS-76).  Final assembly proceeded according to the instruction plan with the delicate PE boom and mast saved for the last steps.  I used small diameter brass rods to replace the kit's long wire antenna parts.

Voyager Space Probe

This was an interesting and enjoyable build. I didn't find any problems with the kit as provided, but I think the aftermarket PE sets really make a difference in the final appearance of the model.  Highly recommended for real-space model fans.

Diecast models are manufactured to various scales based on measurements taken from the actual vehicles. The rule to remember is the higher the scale number, the smaller the model!

So, 1:2 scale quite ltierally means it is 1/2 (half) the size and 1:4 scale means it is 1/4 (quarter) the size.  Here is a rough guide to the size of our models although this will vary depending on the size of the actual vehicle. Please note that the scale and size of models differs per department. Please refer to the individual product page to find out the estimated size of the actual model you would like to purchase.

Hasegawa 1/48 scale Voyager

Share your thoughts on this article

The 1977 launches of Voyager 2 and, a month later, Voyager 1 , were to be the start of a five-year mission. Now, 35 years later, both spacecraft are on their way out of the solar system and still sending back information (to a limited degree) as they continue on to interstellar space — so it seems fitting that Hasegawa has released a 1/48 scale model of Voyager as the probes become man’s first interstellar spacecraft.

The kit is well-molded in white, black, and gold-plated plastic. Novices could easily build it unpainted and still get an acceptable likeness. While it is not a snap-together model, with the parts’ large, strong locating pins, you could almost build it without glue.

The instructions are clear on assembly and painting. All the major components are named, so you can learn about the probe as you build.

A model like this requires a stand, and Hasegawa has provided a sturdy half-globe base with an unobtrusive wire to hold up the finished model.

I studied the instructions, then built as many of the subassemblies as I could before painting, starting with the bus housing (Step 3); I filled small gaps between the halves (parts A3 and A4) with a touch of Mr. Surfacer 500. While test-fitting the legs (parts A11, A14, and A15) to the bus housing, I noticed gaps where the legs met; I glued them together with Weld-On 3, being careful not to glue them to the housing. After that dried, I was able to gingerly remove the leg assembly from the housing to fill and sand the gaps. The only other filler required was for a small gap in the high-gain antenna feed-horn base (C5, C8). Sanding eliminated other seams.

I painted the infrared spectrometer and high-gain antenna parts with Testors gloss white enamel, and other parts Tamiya satin black acrylic and Vallejo Model Air silver, both by brush and airbrush as needed. Rather than paint the exhaust vents on the bus housing solid silver, I dry-brushed them to impart more depth.

The base shows Earth’s northern hemisphere outlined on the inside with raised lines. Not confident in painting a good likeness of Earth, instead I painted with various blues to represent the planet Neptune. With paint on them, some parts were difficult to insert. But with just a touch of Weldon 3 on the pins, they slid in perfectly.

The most disappointing parts were the meter unit and low-field magnetometer booms. They are molded solid, rather than as open trusses. (Photoetched metal would look better, but that long, twisted magnetometer boom would be a bear to build.) To improve the magnetometer boom, I painted it flat black and dry-brushed it with copper paint taken from a Krylon copper leafing pen I found at a craft shop.

The model’s dimensions perfectly match what’s posted on Voyager’s website ( voyager.jpl.nasa.gov ). It took only 17 hours to build my Voyager , and I think any modeler with a bit of experience could build it, too. Hasegawa’s model is a great addition to any spacecraft collection, and it could be a centerpiece for a student who wants to do science project on the Voyager mission.

Preorder FAQs

How preorders work.

  • Guarantee your reservation on any item marked with the red "Preorder item" flag, by paying just 10% down. Preorder items also display a date badge indicating the anticipated arrival.
  • We will email your invoice approximately 30-45 days before your preorder item lands at the warehouse. This interactive invoice will allow you to select your preferred shipping method, and pay the balance of your order, right online!
  • We'll ship you your preorder once your item arrives at our warehouse. Preorder fulfillments are queued in the order in which they were paid for.

Recently, our suppliers have made a major policy change and are no longer accepting product returns for non-paying end customers. After much consideration, we unfortunately must also change our policies to align with the realities our suppliers have created. As our preorder offerings have grown, we’ve found that a large percentage of preorder reservations are canceled or left unpaid without notice. We pay our suppliers for every preorder item that arrives at our warehouse, so when a customer does not pay for their item, we are left no choice but to absorb that cost. We have tried our best to cope with the effects of this change; however, after more than a year of trying, we have found we cannot continue to do so. We understand that this is an unwelcome change, and no one wants to pay earlier than necessary. However, this is unavoidable in order for us to be able to continue to offer the wide variety of preorder options you’re used to getting from Factory Direct Hobbies. We must now ask that customers pay a 10% good-faith down payment toward the price of their item. This non-refundable good-faith payment is applied to the price of the product, and the balance (plus shipping and any applicable taxes) will be invoiced approximately 30-45 days before the item is slated to arrive at our warehouse. We thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have questions or would like further clarification, feel free to contact us through the gold chat bubble.

The good-faith down payment is  not refundable  if you choose to cancel your preorder or do not pay your invoice.

However, if a manufacturer cancels a project for which you have made a down payment, you will receive a refund for your down payment.

Yes. We know that paying ahead of time can be unnerving when delivery dates are distant, and not every project makes it to the production line. Rest assured that, in the event the manufacturer cancels your preorder project, you will be refunded your 10% down payment.

Hobbies should be fun, not stressful!

The manufacturing process involves many different moving parts, and this complexity often renders production timelines unpredictable. Therefore, some level of unpredictability in timing is inherent to preordering hobby products.  Down payments are not refundable in cases of routine manufacturing, delivery, or other short-term delays.

However, we know it can be frustrating when a project gets delayed for many months.  In the event a project is delayed more than 6 months beyond the delivery window originally estimated by the manufacturer, we will handle refunds of down payments on a case-by-case basis.

Friendly Reminder:  Should you choose to cancel a preorder, it will no longer be reserved for you; in the event the item becomes available on our website, all customers will have equal access to purchase the item.

Nope! The policy is not retroactive: if you already made a preorder reservation before this policy update, you do not owe a down payment for that reservation. However, any future preorders you make will require the 10% good-faith down payment.

We make every effort to keep our website updated with information that reflects manufacturers' current estimated delivery schedules. To find the estimated delivery month of an item, you can visit our  Preorder Section  and use the filters to narrow down your selection.

However, we encourage you to directly visit the manufacturer's site for the most current delivery dates.

Approximately 30-45 days before your preorder items land at the warehouse, we'll email your invoice to you to pay in full. At this point, you'll be able to provide your shipping address and select your preferred shipping method.

Your item will be reserved for 7 days, beginning when your invoice is sent. After 7 days, your preorder will be canceled.

Recently, our suppliers have made a major policy change and are no longer accepting product returns for non-paying end customers. We have tried our best to absorb the effects of this change; however, after more than a year of trying, we have found we cannot continue to do so. After much consideration, we unfortunately must also change our policies to align with the realities our suppliers have created.

As a result, we must now ask that customers pay in full prior to the supplier finalizing shipment to FDH, about 30-45 days ahead of product arrival. This gives us the time we need to cancel with our suppliers any unpaid orders prior to shipment. We understand that this is an unwelcome change and no one wants to pay earlier than necessary. However, this is unavoidable in order for us to be able to continue to offer the wide variety of preorder options you’re used to getting from Factory Direct Hobbies.

One silver lining is that this change will result in preorder items getting to your door even faster, as all payment processing will be well out of the way and the usual several day wait after product has arrived will be eliminated. We thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have questions or would like further clarification, feel free to contact us through the gold chat bubble.

Manufacturing schedules can sometimes be unpredictable. In the event your preorder item does not arrive at our warehouse within 60 days of your invoice payment, then you will have the option to cancel your preorder and receive a refund  OR  you may elect to continue waiting for the item.

We know life happens, and missing out on a great item can be a drag!

We're here to help; just contact us via the gold chat bubble and we'll do all we can to work with you!

If you have an account with factorydirecthobbies.com, you can view all your preorders, as well as your active orders. Login to your account, and select the “My orders” option. All your preorders and active orders will be listed along with the current status of each order. If you have further questions about your order, please feel free to reach out to us through the gold chat bubble.

Although we try to keep our preorder arrival estimates as accurate as possible, we encourage you to visit each manufacturer’s website to find the most up-to-date delivery information.

For instance, with  Athearn  and  Walthers , you can enter the part number into their websites and navigate to the item. Most of the time, the delivery date will be listed there.  Broadway Limited  has a published delivery schedule, as does  Rapido .

Rewards and Preorders

Yes. Rewards can be used on both your 10% good-faith down payment and on the balance of your preorder at invoicing time.

Yes! Preorders are awarded reward dollars at the same 5% rate. You'll receive your reward within several days of paying the balance of your preorder invoice.

Voyager SCI ENCE KIT Assembly Instructions

Your voyager space craft® sci ence kit package contains:, a. you'll need the following:.

  • A pen or a pencil for making a mark on the foam-plastic High-Gain Antenna dish (HGA).
  • A small piece of fine sandpaper or denim to smooth the HGA's edges.
  • Small scissors, such as manicure scissors, to clip parts from the parts sheets.
  • Wooden toothpicks for applying glue. One toothpick, 5 to 6 cm (2.25 inches) in length, will be needed in the model as a structural support (in the first part of Step 7).
  • A metal ruler, or a dull knife with a straight edge, such as a butter knife (See 5th part of step 1), for pressing a crease into some paper parts.
  • An art knife, X-Acto #11 or equivalent, with a sharp new blade.
  • Space. Set up a well lighted, comfortable work area, with room to set glued parts to dry undisturbed. It might also be helpful to use a folded terrycloth towel, or a section of carpet, to help hold small parts in alignment while the glue dries.
  • Time. Plan to set aside several hours for unhurried assembly. Four hours would probably be an absolute minimum to assemble your Voyager.
  • Patience. While some parts of this kit might assemble easily due to advanced design, there may be some trying times. Remember that extra time and care will pay off with a surprisingly accurate, and handsome representation of NASA's two Voyagers in the outer solar system.
  • Optional: If your use of the finished model would not present any hazard of eye injury from protruding wire, and if desired to represent the spacecraft's PRA/PWS Antennas (see the Fact Sheet illustration ): obtain about a meter (or a yard) of thin bare or tinned solid copper wire. No. 18 AWG works well. Bamboo skewers may be used, but they will be very much thicker than scale (see step 12).
  • Optional: To stiffen the long MAGNETOMETER BOOM, especially if it is to be displayed with the boom pointing outward (vs. downward) and frequently handled, you may wish to obtain a very thin piece of balsa wood about 3mm or 1/8-inch in diameter, and about 40 cm or 16 inches in length. A stiff but thinner bamboo skewer also works.
  • Optional: 1/4-inch (6 mm) wide, black matte or crepe adhesive tape, 8 inches (20 cm) in length (for HGA Collar). Available from art stores as Chartpak #BG2501M or BGCP2501, or Formaline #1006E or 5020E. Black vinyl electrical tape will suffice, if carefully slit to 1/4 inch width (See the third part of Step 1).
  • Optional: A small amount of white poster paint or typing White-Out, such as Papermate Liquid Paper (See first part of step 7).
  • Optional: You might find it good to use an electric hair drier to set the glue in some places. If you do, be very careful not to blow the pieces apart.
  • Optional: There are some 3D-printable parts available to download for this scale model. Visit this page to learn more; look for The HGA Assembly and The Voyager MAG Boom.

  1. Amazon.com: Hasegawa 1/48 science world no person space probe

Add to that, the kit I purchased is NASA's Voyager spacecraft — a model with many tiny and small, long, thin parts. All were perfect! The instructions, even the color coding for painting, are well-written, logical, and easy to understand. There is nothing about this kit that I wasn't happy with.

  6. Hasegawa 1/48 scale Voyager

The 1977 launches of Voyager 2 and, a month later, Voyager 1, were to be the start of a five-year mission. Now, 35 years later, both spacecraft are on their way out of the solar system and still sending back information (to a limited degree) as they continue on to interstellar space — so it seems fitting that Hasegawa has released a 1/48 scale model of Voyager as the probes become man's ...
