Cot mobiles are a lovely addition to a baby's nursery. They can be used as a way to soothe your baby to sleep, distract them or stimulate them to aid their development or simply as a beautiful decoration.

There are many cot mobiles on the market to choose from, some more stimulating than others depending on your intended use. Some have musical features and / or light projection features whilst others take a more gentle approach with soft toys or sensory patterns.

What to consider when choosing a cot mobile

What to look for in a cot mobile.

Age suitability – As you can see from the list below, all cot mobiles are only suitable until a certain age, therefore, if you want one that can last for years make sure you double-check the age range.

Type of cot mobile – There are a few different types of cot mobiles to choose from, you can get ones that hang from the ceiling (bear in mind if you have very high ceilings that your baby will struggle to see it) Or cot mobiles that attach to the side of the cot. There are also some mobiles that are portable and can be attached to pushchairs, car seats and more.

Does it rotate? – Some cot mobiles are mechanical and rotate whilst others just hang and gently blow in the wind.

Type of crib/cot you have – Not all mobiles are compatible with every cot. It's important to check this before purchasing to make sure it will fit securely onto your baby's cot.

Music feature – The music feature is a lovely addition to cot mobiles. They tend to play soft lullabies to soothe your baby to sleep. However, not all have music so depending on how you want to use the mobile this is something to consider.

Projection feature – Much like the music feature, some offer projection or a light too.

Use of cot mobile – If the intended use of the mobile is to entertain and distract your baby during nappy changes or anything else then you will want a particularly stimulating one. However, if you want it to soothe them to sleep, then you should opt for one that won't keep them up or stimulate them too much.

We asked Dr. Harvey Karp, paediatrician and child development expert, what to look for in a cot mobile and he said, "not all baby mobiles are created equal. It is best to look for mobiles that feature high-contrast colours, like dark blue and white, black and white or a bullseye pattern. Since newborns' eyes are still developing they love watching easy-to-see, high-contrast little objects as they practice their ability to concentrate and follow things as they move through the space. As a paediatrician and sleep expert, I also recommend only mildly stimulating mobiles".

This baby cot mobile comes with an arm that adjusts to fit onto lots of different sized cots. With its soft unisex colours it would look great in any modern, muted nursery. The cute mobile plays soothing melodies to help your baby fall asleep. The music can be turned on and off by pressing the star that hangs from the centre of the mobile. There are 5 gentle calming melodies to choose from. Not only does it play melodies but the cloud squeaks, the penguin rattles, the star crinkles and the polar bear chimes making it a great sensory toy. The volume and rotation can also be controlled.

I loved the look of this mobile, the animals hanging from it are very cute and soft, some have scrunch noises and one has a bell inside. I also really liked the tunes, they were very calming and pleasant not tinny like a lot of mobiles. The Butterfly Dreams 3-in-1 projection mobile casts a starry light show onto your ceilings and walls. It's motorised with 3 butterfly bear soft toys. The mobile has 3 sound settings; up to 30 minutes of lullaby music, the sounds of nature or white noise to soothe your baby to sleep. There's also a remote control so you can control it from afar. As your baby grows up, it converts into a table-top projector. Elements of it can also be attached to a pram too.

I like the fact it can be used as a cot mobile but can also be taken apart to be used as a pushchair mobile and a star light show separately. I love that you can clip it anywhere, stroller, playmat arch, car seat and it was perfect with the Snuzpod bedside crib. It is a beautiful mobile, it feels well made with good quality materials and was very easy to put together and attach to the cot. I liked the lullaby but for me, it felt it was playing a bit too fast to be soothing, it wasn't until it was coming to the end after being wound up it started to slow down. Home tester Hannah

Much like the Fisher-Price Butterfly dreams mobile, this too grows with your child. The cloud and sun toys hang from the mobile and feature a 2- minute playlist to help your baby drift off to sleep. As your baby gets older, the mobile coverts to a table-top soother with nightlight. The handy cry sensor in the cloud means the music automatically restarts when your baby stirs, which can be great to help soothe your baby. There's also a gentle light built in.

I love that the cloud feature can be detached and used separately away from the mobile, it became a multi-functional piece of equipment. Usually, I really don't like the inbuilt music in baby equipment, but this one was lovely, the sounds chosen were soothing and the sound quality wasn't horrendous. It's got over 18 minutes of calming lullabies and classical music with volume adjustment control. The projector creates a colour changing starlight projection for the walls and ceiling whilst the soft glowing light help soothe your baby to sleep. The spinning clouds and aircraft are brightly coloured to develop your baby's senses.

A remote control is included to adjust the volume or play and pause the music without disturbing your baby. It also has a sound sensor to detect your baby crying and plays songs and sounds to soothe them back to sleep. It has 4 colourful light patterns too.

I liked the detachable remote to control the sound and how the sheep mobile was detachable so can be used in other places in the house or car seat. It was also great that you can vary what you want from it, whether the lambs are rotating, lights on or sound on. Home tester Laura

According to Dr. Harvey Karp, paediatrician and child development expert, "cot mobiles are a wonderful addition to any baby's nursery, as long as they are used correctly":

• Make sure the strings on the mobile are 220mm long or less, any longer is considered an entanglement risk
• Hang the mobile high enough so they cannot reach it
• Make sure the mobile works with your baby's cot so it can be securely attached
• Once your baby begins to perch on their hands and knees or sit up, it's time to move the mobile from their cot or bassinet

How did this product make your life easier?

Samantha: Good to be able to have a cot bed or baby crib from baby right up to toddler. Less hassle to have to rush to find a toddler bed. Very good storage underneath. You can storage toys, clothes or baby essentials in a hidden space. Love the too coloured toned cotbed. Was easy to out together and looked lovely. Easy to move up and down with different levels.

Jessica: This is a really great cot. The design itself is great and my child has slept so well in it. The size is a little smaller than regular cots but I found this to be a bonus. As we coslept since birth I had this cot side car’d to our bed. The transition went so smoothly and I think that it was due to how much my child like the cot itself. We have also doubled it up as a safe space for my child to play if I am cleaning the rooms upstairs. My child finds it so relaxing and just plays and reads books in there.

Edward: This product came well packaged with easy to follow assembly instructions and well organised fixings. It took 2 of us just under an hour to assemble. It seems to be a very well made product which will stand the test of time and provide a safe sleep space for our baby for a long time to come. This bed turns into a cotbed by removing either one or both of the rail sides. It also features a large pull out drawer underneath which is wonderful for storage, especially if you are lacking storage space in your child's nursery.

Would you recommend this to other parents?

Rosalind: This is a solid and well made piece of furniture which is easy to assemble. It looks modern and chic and matches our other nursery furniture perfectly. On top of this it offers ample storage. One thing I liked about the design was that it wasn't bulky and offered a slimline style but with a sturdy build. This helped to ensure it didn't overwhelm the room as some cot beds can do. I love the wooden block detail at the head and end of the bed which contrasts tastefully with the white colour on the rest of the cot. It definitely feels Nordic which is a style I love. Overall, I'd highly recommend this product. It lives up to the quality reputation of John Lewis and my little boy loves going to bed in it.

Jessica: I would recommend this cot to a friend or fellow mums as it is so easy to build and use. It doesn’t have fiddly bolts that you need to spend hours trying to get together. The sides come off so easy. The storage underneath is also great. It is sturdy and the most important part is that it is a safe space for my child.

Samantha: I would recommend this product to a friend or gallows mummy because it is very practical. You don't have to rush to find a toddler bed. Very comfortable and easy to put together. Look is beautiful and the storage is amazing. The design is lovely once together. Compact when down but easy to fit in a smaller room.

Would you choose this product above all others on the market?

Edward: The design of this product is quite unlike most others on the market as it features a dual tone colour of grey and white. It also looks stylish when transformed to a cot bed as the grey panels are on the end and remain there to make a toddler bed once the cot rails are removed. It is such good quality and seems as though it would stand the test of time which is great as you are paying a little more money for it compared to some other, similar items on the market.

Samantha: I absolutely loved the two toned look of the cotbed. It is very stylish and modern. Goes with everything. The storage is always an added bonus. The only thing that would make it better would be possibly reducing the price of the product and adding a mattress in to save the stress of having to find a mattress that fits the cot.

Jessica: Probably not. The only reason why I wouldn’t choose this product over others on the market is because of the mattress size required. The cot itself was £350. Then I would have needed to spend a further £150 for the cot mattress that fit. Because the cot size is not standard and completely different to other cots. I was only able to purchase one from John Lewis themselves. I didn’t have much of an option on what the mattress was made out of or the firmness either. £150 was a lot of money for me to spend in order to test this cot. I’m glad my child liked it otherwise it would have been wasted money.

What changes would you make to this product?

Samantha: The only two things that I would change about this product is one the cost. I think it should be slightly cheaper. I also think that a mattress should be included, especially with the price it is. I feel the price for the cotbed should be reduced if a mattress isn't included. I would consider paying the price if it was.

Edward: The price of the product is a little high but I do believe that this is because you are paying for a good quality product which will grow with your child. It feels strong enough to use again and again if you were to have more than one child. There is nothing else I can suggest to change about this product as I feel that everything from the packaging and assembly to the design and quality are of a very high quality.

Rosalind: The mattress size required is slightly different to standard cot beds so it is important to read which mattress to buy. However, we easily found the mattress in the brand that we wanted so, as long as you are aware that it doesn't fit the standard cotbed mattress size you'll be fine. So, rather than something I'd change, it is more something to check prior to purchase.
