  • Azamara Cruises
  • Cunard Line

Where do cruise lines depart from Perth?

Cruise ships in Perth generally depart from the Fremantle Passenger Terminal. If you wish to spend some time before your cruise from Fremantle to explore the wondrous city of Perth, a taxi will take around 20 – 30 minutes to get you to the heart of the Western Australian capital. If you wish to take public transport, there is a direct line from the cruise terminal into Perth CBD, with travel times of around 40 – 50 minutes. Keep in mind, that there will likely be a small 2 – 5 minute walk from your ship to the station.

How do I get from Perth Airport to Fremantle Cruise Terminal?

Perth Airport is approximately 25km away from Fremantle Cruise Terminal, roughly around 40 minutes of travel if you wish to book a taxi. We strongly suggest either booking a taxi or organising an airport transfer with your cruise line as taking public transport is quite strenuous, especially with all your luggage! Taking around one and a half hours to get from Perth Airport to Fremantle Cruise Terminal, and often requiring multiple transfers, public transport is simply a no-go for most.

Culture & History of the Perth (Fremantle) Cruise Port

Perth was originally inhabited by the Aboriginal Noongar group for thousands of years prior to colonization by the British in 1829. The Dutch had previously explored the area, too, but considered the soil quality too poor to make a settlement there. Swan River was considered a sacred site by the Noongar people, and the British viewed the river as key to international trade and commerce in the area. In the mid-19th century, the British sent thousands of convicts to live and work here. Perth is affectionately nicknamed the “City of Lights” because in 1962, astronaut John Glenn remarked that he could see the lit-up homes and buildings of Perth during his journey. Today, Perth is the home of nearly two million people, making it the second-most populated area in all of Australia.

Perth (Fremantle) Port Facilities & Location

At this working port, you’ll board cruises from Perth at Victoria Quay. Fremantle is pretty walkable and easy to get to from Perth. If you have time to kill, there’s also a visitor information center accessible via tram.

Transportation in Perth (Fremantle)

There’s no shortage of options for getting around Perth, whether you choose the city’s thoughtfully laid out public transit or want to rent a car before your cruise from Fremantle. Taxis are common, and Uber operates in Perth as well. Transperth is the train system here, and a card to take the metro also applies to Perth’s network of ferries and buses. It’s recommended to taxi to the center of town and walk on foot to major sights from there. Getting to Fremantle to board your cruise ship is about a 15-minute train or taxi ride from Perth, so cushion and plan ahead when it comes to boarding your cruise ship.

Shopping Near the Perth (Fremantle) Cruise Port

Fremantle is home to plenty of vintage shops, boutiques, and name-brand stores. Choose from an abundance of eateries and food options in Fremantle before you board your cruise ship, like a famous Australian flat white from one of the coffee shops on Cappuccino Strip in South Terrace. The Fremantle Markets are a must-see as well, where over 150 local vendors display their handmade goods, fashions, jewelry, food items, and more.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

While on cruises from Perth, you’ll use the Australian dollar as the official currency of the country. Carrying cash is recommended, and the city is plentiful in terms of ATMs. Tipping is relatively new to Australia, so there’s a lot of misinformation about when to tip and how much. The best practice for tipping depends on the context. Leave 10% or a little bit of change in cash for taxi drivers, while a 10% tip for restaurant staff and servers for excellent service is more than acceptable. In general, tips are appreciated but not mandatory in most cases.

About Cruising to Perth (Fremantle)

Fremantle is known for its eclectic streets buzzing with buskers, sidewalks filled with cafes and bars and a focus on emerging arts. It's a combination that won it a place in Lonely Planet's Top 10 Cities list in 2016.

Home to some of Western Australia's most well-preserved 19th century buildings, its streets are abuzz with a thriving music scene. It's easy to find live music to enjoy, especially on weekends. Throw some amazing beaches into the mix, and you'll find plenty of good reasons to spend a lot of your free time in Fremantle.

Perth is only a 30-minute drive from Fremantle. But if you're only in port for a day, it's not possible to do justice to both cities. Fremantle is the easier option because of its proximity to the port and its compact size. However, if you want to experience a slice of 'big city' life, and you've been to Freo already, then it's worth heading up to Perth for a look.

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, has an outdoorsy easy-going vibe and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The weather is usually great, the cafe and bar scene is buzzing, the beaches are beautiful, and there is plenty of scenic parkland.

One of the best ways to see the Perth skyline and also marvel at the palatial riverside homes is to take a cruise on the Swan River.

Fremantle is friendly Western Australian town with lots of pubs, museums and galleries and it is a gateway to Perth

If you are only in Perth for one day, it is not possible to see both Fremantle and Perth

Fremantle is a great alternative to Perth when time is tight

Ships dock at the Port of Fremantle, which is only a short walk over a railway line to the compact downtown area and historic district.

The Port of Fremantle is a working port, but the western end, Victoria Quay, has recently been upgraded. The historic B Shed has a ferry terminal, a licensed bar area, outdoor cafe and complimentary Wi-Fi when cruise ships dock. The work that has been done at The Fremantle Passenger Terminal celebrates the Heritage significance of the landmark building, while improving security and visitor amenity.

There is a tourist information centre at the terminal and an impressive Maritime Museum. The two-level Fremantle Passenger Terminal is still the largest cruise terminal in Australia and the only passenger terminal in the country with two-berth capacity.

Fremantle's town centre is so close it is easy to go wandering around there.

Good to Know?

Fremantle is great to explore during the day but the bar and music scene really comes alive at night.

Getting Around?

On Foot: Fremantle is walkable and very close.

By Bicycle: You can hire a bike from the Fremantle Visitor Centre (8 William St, Fremantle; 08 9431 7878; open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm; Saturday 9 am to 4 pm, Sunday 10 am to 4 pm). There is a refundable deposit, and the bikes can be used throughout the Fremantle area. Electric bikes are available but arrive early to avoid disappointment. Free bike hire is available 9.30 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and 10.30 am to 3 pm on Sunday and public holidays.

By Bus: Free Central Area Transit (CAT) shuttle buses pick up and drop off right at the front of the terminal every 10 to 15 minutes until around 6 pm each day. It's a hop-on, hop-off service that covers all the main attractions. The Red CAT covers the area north of Fremantle Station, and the Blue CAT includes major attractions south of Fremantle Station. Most of the major attractions are on the south side.

By Train: The easiest and quickest way to travel between Fremantle and Perth is by train. They depart from Fremantle station every 15 minutes or so, and it's roughly a 30-minute journey. There is a free shuttle bus between Fremantle Train Station and the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on a continuous circuit arriving about every 20 minutes. It operates from an hour after the ship berths to 4 pm. Walking to the train station takes about 20 minutes. You can cross the railway line at an overhead pedestrian bridge with ramps, or through the terminal car park.

By Taxi: There are usually taxis waiting outside the terminal. If you need to phone a taxi, try Swan Taxis (131 330), Black & White Cabs (133 222); or Maxi Taxi Perth (0406 553 313).

By Car: Most of the major car hire companies have offices in Fremantle. They include Budget (08 9335 8722, Thrifty (08 9239 1556), Avis (08 9239 9044), and Europcar (08 9336 4411). A car rental is a good option if you have enough time and fancy taking a drive south to Rockingham, Mandurah, Bunbury or Margaret River.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

The local currency is the Australian dollar, and ATMs are easily found in Fremantle and Perth, most of which will take international cards. At the Port of Fremantle, where ships dock, there's a general ATM located at the B Shed Ferry Terminal.

We've been waiting in the port as given on the information in KKDAY with 4 departures, 2 ports but little did we know our tour will turn into a nightmare. Their info and the website of the cruise is different. Tickets booked for a month or two in advance and take note you are charge as soon as you booked. The merchant knew it. You called customer service on the same day of the tour but no one answered. You called the following day to request for a refund but all their answer is WAIT. We've waited for a month and still the response is NOTHING. Is this the kind of customer service you are giving to the people who booked a tour to enjoy their vacation, or you just want to take our money and ruined our vacation? GUYS THINK MANY TIMES BEFORE MAKING A BOOKING on this company, this is absolutely a scam! Until now, we are still waiting for our refund and these two companies CAPTAIN COOK CRUISE AND KKDAY is just blaming each other and not prioritizing their customer. They even updated the KKDAY product information which is absolutely a proof that they provided us a wrong information but still they DID NOT refund our MONEY.

So maybe we had a poor sense of choice and maybe we ended up going on the wrong Captain Cook cruise. Maybe that's why I'm left here feeling discouraged from speaking highly of them. We booked a really last minute (as in buy tickets as people are boarding) Swan River Scenic Cruise. You can opt for lunch on board for an extra $30, but I've had a buffet on board a boat before and that didn't interest me. We did the return, staying on board for the duration option, as we were going to spend an entire other day in Fremantle. Honestly, it gets boring. The commentary was fine and informative, but so easy to zone out of. By the time you get to Fremantle, you're ready to get off along with the rest of the ferry. And then the entire ride back is mostly quiet (he can't commentate and point out things he's already pointed out) and boring. The next day we did Rottnest Island, and the Rottnest Express ferry and the upbeat commentary of the Swan River left us wondering what was the point of the Captain Cook one we went on and it just led to complete regret in making that decision. In saying everything, Captain Cook does have a lot of cruising options, maybe just go with one that isn't the standard Swan River Scenic one?

My beloved partner bought tickets from redballoon.com for a lunch river cruise after seeing their exciting advertisement. The lunch consisted of a four hour journey up the swan river towards the swan valley area, including a buffet lunch, desserts and unlimited drinks from their beverage list. You can also buy a bottle (or two) of exclusive wines from the swan valley region either for yourself or a gift for that "alcoholic" friend you may know. I believe the wines were reasonable priced, but alas we did not buy any since I did not want any friends who may be on the receiving end to pick up any bad habits (*very responsible of me). The journey began when we arrived at the Barrack Street jetting and presented our voucher from redballoon to the Captain Cook cruise counter. The nice worker there told us where to go and gave us our tickets. The boat was not hard to find since it was one of two and your ticket clearly states the name of the boat you may be boarding, so its not rocket science. There were three staff members who looked after us throughout the entire journey, one of which entertained us with his "Michael Buble`" singing towards the end of the journey. The food was a nice selection of cold meats, salads and a few hot dishes such as pasta, fish, rice and curry. I will admit it's nothing to rave about but the hospitality of the cruise made it all worth while. Plus the views of swan river and some interesting facts of Perth from the captain was very enlightening. The cruise did drift pass some residential areas which I thought was a little snoopy but it can't be avoided since some houses live right on the banks of the river. Still, the fact that we were cruising pass some private homes and people's backyards did not stop me from looking or envying their beautiful houses. Dessert was just simply a selection of four cakes and a fruit platter. This also included tea and coffee. Again nothing to rave about but everything was so beautifully presented. During the cruise everyone was welcomed to walk around the boat as well as go outside (not into the river) onto the front of the ship where there was seating areas. As a rule of thumb, since the seating area is at the front of the boat, it would be most wise not to block the view of the captain (who is driving). I would most definitely come back for another cruise since I had a wonderful time with the hospitality and cruising down the river with spectacular views with good company. There are options for other cruises, such as a cruise down the Fremantle way, a whole day cruise or a dinner cruise. All which I believe are reasonalbe priced for the amount of alcohol your permitted to drink (don't go over board).

I went for a dinner cruise with Captain Cooke Cruises. I wouldn't do it all the time but it was definitely a fun thing to do! We pushed off about 7:30pm, it was a 3 hour cruise out to Fremantle and back to Barrack Street Jetty. There was a buffet dinner plus dessert, wine and beer is included with other drinks (ie champagne, spirits etc) available to purchase. There was a dj and a dance floor, the staff were kind and courteous, and all around good time to be had :)

This cruise line is the best I've been on. I've had several short cruises along the Swan River. The commentary is always good and they deliver everything they say they will. A particularly good cruise is the Upper Swan Lunch Cruise. On this one, we depart at 1.15pm, sit at set tables, are provided with a sumptuous buffet lunch (you can believe those words with this organisation - not like many others), good wines, lovely desserts and some marvellous entertainment provided by crew members. It is very enjoyable. We return to Barrack Street Jetty at 4pm. I highly recommend it.

A nice relaxing way to see the surrounding area. Very comfortable cruiser (James Stirling), nice views, not crowded at all. Buffet was organized instead a mad rush to the food. Prices for excluded drinks are reasonable and crew was courteous.

My girl friend and I went on a lunch cruise with Captain Cook today and had a lovely afternoon. I was pleased to find that the wine included with the price of the ticket was quite nice. I wasn't expecting that. The buffet was good. There were 3 hot dishes several salads cold meet and seafood. I don't think anyone disembarked hungry. The staff were friendly and one of them turned out to be a really good singer. The skipper has a good knowledge of the area surrounding the river and gave an informative commentary on the way up the river. I would recommend the lunch cruise to tourists or locals looking to do something they haven't done for a while.

Cruise from Perth to Fremantle or to Swan Valley wine region. They do cruises for lunch, dinner or just a little joy ride. I have been on the freo tour and the swan valley tour and both lived up to expectations, well I think the memories are a little fuzzy on both times but the photos tell a story or two. It reminded me of taking a cruise from fisherman's port in San Francisco, so if you feel like being on holiday stroll down to the Barrack St Jetty for a little cruise around Perth. Ideal for bored perthlings, tourists, visitors and a great spot for a company outing. The food was pretty average, but it soaked up the booze and there were loads of prawns to keep devouring.

Swan River Cruises

Looking for things to do in Perth? Hop on a Swan River cruise. The Swan River flows through the heart of Perth and offers stunning views of the city skyline, the lush greenery of Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and other landmarks along its banks. Not only is it a beautiful part of the city, but you’ll also be able to learn a lot about the history, culture and natural beauty of the region. If you are looking for romantic Perth date ideas or other great things to do across the city, a Swan River cruise is a great option. Book your cruise today.

What can I expect on a Perth cruise?

Perth cruises are known for offering stunning views of the city skyline and its surroundings, as well as a variety of onboard experiences. If you can’t go past great water views, Perth cruises deliver breathtaking views of the city, river, and surrounding landscapes. Take in the stunning city skyline, see the lush greenery of Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and observe local wildlife along the riverbanks. If you’re a foodie and want a more luxurious option, join a Perth dinner cruise and enjoy a meal while taking in some scenic views from the water. Some Perth cruises also offer wine-tasting experiences, where you can sample some of the finest wines produced in the region while enjoying the picturesque surroundings of the river. No matter what your preferences are, you’ll find plenty of memorable Perth cruises. Whether you’re there for a history lesson, the views, or the wildlife, a river cruise in Perth is a unique and enjoyable way to explore the city and its surrounding areas.

How much does a Perth cruise cost?

At RedBalloon, the price of a river cruise in Perth varies depending on the type of cruise and its duration. Prices can start from around $30 per person for a one-hour sightseeing cruise, while a lunch or dinner cruise can cost between $120 to $190 per person. A wine-tasting cruise can range from around $89 to $195 per person, depending on the inclusions and quality of wine offered. It’s important to note that prices may vary depending on the specific operator and the time of year.

Where do Perth cruises leave from?

Perth cruises leave from various locations along the Swan River, depending on which cruise you book. Some popular departure points include Barrack Street Jetty, Fremantle, Perth Zoo, and Claisebrook Cove. Be sure to check with your cruise operator beforehand to confirm where the cruise will be leaving from.

What should I wear on a Perth dining cruise?

A general rule of thumb when it comes to dressing for a Perth dinner cruise is to avoid being too formal or too casual. We’d recommend sticking to smart casual and wearing comfortable footwear. Since dinner cruises go into the night and you may be partially outdoors, bring a jacket to throw on in the evening. Weather can also change throughout the night, so layering up is always a good idea.

Boat cruises in Perth are a wonderful way to spend the day or evening. However, if you find yourself in another city, there are plenty of stunning cruises that you can embark on around Australia. Whether it’s a scenic or a dinner cruise, there are many options that are bound to tickle your fancy.
