Though you won't find Eeylops Owl Emporium, Flourish and Blotts, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes or Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions in London 's streets, that doesn't mean you can't indulge in the world of "Harry Potter." Knowledgeable witches and wizards lead themed tours that discuss not only filming locations for the beloved Potter films, but also the wizarding world's most famous individuals like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Consulting Muggle traveler opinion as well as expert input from the top witches and wizards, U.S. News & World Report found the best Harry Potter London tours on offer.

Note: These tours take place on foot, by bus or on trains, so it's best to leave your brooms and Floo powder at home.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

Price: From 53.50 pounds (around $67) per person Duration: 3.5 hours

For Potterheads, no trip to London is complete without a stop to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter , which explores how the "Harry Potter" films were made. During the self-guided visit, travelers will wander the Diagon Alley set, board the Hogwarts Express, view props and costumes and much, much more. Visit around Halloween for the Dark Arts or the winter holidays for Hogwarts in the Snow; the tour is decked out in seasonal décor for both events.

"As both a filmmaker and 'Harry Potter' fan, I was absolutely blown away by this tour," says Leilani Osmundson , senior digital producer at U.S. News Travel. "The sets, props and costumes were incredible and very well-maintained, and there were written explanations for almost everything." Osmundson suggests staying at the back of the group when entering the Great Hall for a chance to snag photos with fewer people in the shot when the group moves on. Keep in mind, this great experience comes with equivalent fees: Travelers warn of high ticket prices and expensive souvenirs. To avoid crowds, get to the studio early.

The tour is self-paced and you can explore as long as you wish. The tour is located in Leavesden, Watford, which is about 20 miles northwest of central London. Take the train to Watford Junction then board the complimentary shuttle to the studio.

Harry Potter at Alnwick Castle

Icon

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone filmed on location at Alnwick Castle in autumn 2000. The following year, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (the second film in the series) used Alnwick Castle for shooting.

The Outer Bailey is recognisable as the area where Harry and his fellow students learned to fly broomsticks with Madam Hooch (Zoe Wanamaker).  Harry also learned the rules of wizarding sport Quidditch in the Outer Bailey.

The courtyards and baileys of Alnwick Castle were used to film Hogwarts students and staff going about their daily activities. Harry and Ron crash-landed the Weasley family’s flying car in the Inner Bailey.

The Lion Arch was a way in and out of Hogwarts, heading towards Hagrid’s cabin and the Forbidden Forest.

DIVINATION, DESTINY AND DARK MAGIC Join us in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with a brand new feature for 2024. Discover new filmmaking secrets and explore fan-favourite sets, built by the original filmmakers and available at the Studio Tour for the very first time! During the special feature, you are invited to broaden your mind and cast yourself into the future as we showcase the noble art of divination. For the first time ever, the Divination classroom set will be on display at the Studio Tour, as seen when Harry, Ron and Hermione attend their first lesson with Professor Trelawney, allowing you to discover the details up close. Make sure to look out for the original Grim teacup! During filmmaking, sets are often adapted to form new backdrops for different scenes. Following a few architectural changes, the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom set was transformed to become the Divination classroom. With a few adaptations, including the addition of foam beams, it was possible to give the space a whole new look on screen. When designing the look and feel of the set, filmmakers started with the idea of a traditional tea shop, with students sitting in pairs at round tables surrounded by mismatched teacups stacked high around the set. From there, the room was draped in rich red fabric and decorated with jewel-toned velvet pouffes, numerous patterned rugs and Arabian-style lanterns, creating a classroom in which eccentric Professor Trelawney would feel at home. A new section of the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom can also be found at the Studio Tour during our Return to Azkaban Feature, complete with the Boggart wardrobe and sinister Boggart jack-in-the-box.

Great Hall Step through the doors of the spectacular Great Hall into the dining room, where the Sorting Hat famously sorted Hogwarts students into their houses. The two huge centrepiece tables are set for dinner, and costumes of students from each Hogwarts house can be seen dotted around the room.

Finish off your journey through the captivating world of Harry Potter at Gringotts Wizarding Bank, a new addition to Warner Bros Studio, and the tour’s largest expansion ever. Your jaw will drop as you wander through marble pillars, shimmering chandeliers, and original costumes worn by Goblin bankers. Uncover the vault of Bellatrix Lestrange, where you’ll find the Sword of Gryffindor, along with Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, mounds of golden Galleons, silver Sickles, and bronze Knuts.

Before you leave, make sure you take a photo surrounded by your newfound treasure!

Travel to Oxford

After spending the morning immersed in Harry Potter’s magical world, it’s time to trade in the Hogwarts Express for your executive coach. Next on the agenda is a fascinating afternoon in Oxford, just over an hour from Warner Bros Studio.

Follow your guide through the charming streets of Oxford before arriving at the city’s historic university. Founded in 1167, the University of Oxford is renowned for its connection to the literary world, with a wide range of poets, authors, statesmen, and inventors that have all claimed Oxford as their home. Not only Harry Potter movies, but also The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and The Lord of the Rings are other beloved classics that have derived from Oxford.

Enter Divinity School

Your guide will lead you on a fascinating walking tour of Oxford, where you’ll take in the city’s breathtaking architecture. One of your afternoon highlights in Oxford is the entrance to the Divinity School, a place steeped in cinematic wizardry, as it served as the infirmary in the Harry Potter films.

The Divinity School makes multiple appearances throughout the film series, such as when Harry breaks his arm during a thrilling Quidditch match in the first installment, or when Hermione falls victim to petrification in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," among other memorable scenes. This is your opportunity to step into the very locations where these magical moments were brought to life, and to discover the real-world inspiration behind the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Don't miss your chance to embark on this spellbinding journey!

After some free time to explore the gorgeous university grounds on your own, you and your intimate group will be driven back to London.

Great experience!

We had a great time touring the studio and Oxford! Luke drove safely and Tony shared his vast knowledge with us on the way to the studio. Seeing how they made the Harry Potter's was really interesting and fun! Chris gave us an excellent history lesson about Oxford and the buildings were breathtaking! It was a great day!

The instructions were easy to follow to meet our tour guide. The coach/bus was large, comfortable and clean. Our driver, John, was very kind and cordial. Our Tour Guide, Mike, did a fabulous job of sharing history and stories in a conversational manner that made it easy to listen and understand. He was quite kind and full of knowledge. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the WB studios and highly recommend it for any Harry Potter fans. We also enjoyed our time at Oxford University and would love to visit again in the future.

Fact: In my entire life, I’ve only cried once at a tourist attraction.

And judge me all you want, but this cryfest happened at a Harry Potter studio tour.

… Allow me to explain myself.

Like most children born in the 90s, much of my youth was spent daydreaming about the arrival of my Hogwart’s acceptance letter. As this dream dwindled with the hardships of adulting, I instead took comfort in carbs and magical movie marathons.

But, it didn’t take much for these childhood dreams to resurface. A trip to London was all it took to re-open the floodgates (literally).

Let me tell you: for a Harry Potter fan, there is no attraction on this Earth more overwhelming and amazing than the  Warner Bros Studio Tour London, (AKA London’s Harry Potter set tour), which brings you through the filming site for all 8 movies in the Harry Potter franchise.

In addition to sets, you’re also shown countless props, the best gift shop in the world, and even a chance to taste butter beer for yourself. Come on now, is it at all a surprise that I bawled when I got to the end?

Read onwards for important info to know about the tour, some tips to keep in mind and of course, a recap of the experience (with plenty of photos!) Be careful for this section, as spoilers are abound!

Basic information to know about the Harry Potter Set Tour

If you’re interested in booking the epic Warner Bros Studio Tour in London for yourself, then here are some basic must-knows.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets Info:

I first visited this attraction in 2014 and it was a hot mess then, and has only grown in popularity in the past few years.

If this Harry Potter set tour is a must-do for you, then make sure you book your tickets WELL in advance or you risk not being able to go!

Luckily, even when tickets are sold out on the main site, there are tours you can book online that will have tickets available for sold out dates.

Sometimes, booking with a tour is worthwhile because you not only guarantee your tickets, you also get the convenience of private transport there, which is nice and much less stressful than using public transport yourself.

Here is a breakdown of different Harry Potter Studio tour options that include transport. For your convenience, I also lay out their costs and what they have to offer:

Tickets can also be purchased online from the studio itself  here.

How to Get to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London:

Despite its name, the Warner Bros Studio London is actually located in Leavesden, which is northwest of London.

While booking a tour/private transport is the easiest and most convenient way to get there, it is still quite painless to reach via public transit, as a shuttle bus runs from Watford Junction railway station.

To get to the Watford Junction station, you need to make use of London’s overground system.

Not sure about the best route to get there? Check out this handy trip planner .  The tour’s website recommends that you arrive at Watford Junction 45 minutes prior to your tour time.

Remember to bring change, as the cost for the shuttle bus is 2 pounds each way.

NOTE : Leave a lot of leeway for you to get there. We definitely got lost a few times due to the transfers, and were stressed to the max! For a more stress-free experience, consider prebooking a tour that comes with transport. Here’s one for under $100USD.

Tips for Doing the Harry Potter Set Tour Like a Pro

Having addressed the basics, here are some tips you should keep in mind when planning your visit:

1. Check on the Warner Bros Studio Tour website for special events

The studio tour often has special weeks during which there are specialized displays or demonstrations.

If you have quite some time in London, I suggest looking up when special events are happening and to plan accordingly.

I was luckily around for the beginning of Wand Week, so I got to see wandmakers do their thing and I even got to pose with some Death Eaters. Super cool!

harry potter tour hogwarts

2. Allow extra time for travel

Especially if you are new to London, trying to navigate the transit there can take time, so give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the studio.

That being said, do not hyperventilate if your ticketed time is fast approaching. While the reservation system does assign you a time, they won’t turn you away if you are a bit late.

harry potter tour hogwarts

3. Don’t forget to print your Warner Bros Studio Tour ticket

This will make the whole process smoother.

One girl that came with us didn’t print hers and upon arrival, she realized that her order never actually went through.

Luckily, even though they claim there is no box office at the attraction, she was able to purchase a ticket there, but do book in advance to save yourself the trouble.

4. Set yourself a budget for magical souvenirs

Trust me, when you enter the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop for the first time, you will lose all sense of self control.

You will suddenly want all these things that you would never need.

Legit wizard robe? Okay!

Replica wand? Yes please.

There are so many amazingly crafted souvenirs for sale that you will easily empty your wallet.

For budget-conscious backpackers (like me) or large families with crying children, setting a budget beforehand is a must.

harry potter tour hogwarts

5. Grab yourself a free Warner Bros Studio Tour London passport

At some point during the tour, you might notice children getting awesome embossed stamps on a Harry Potter passport.

Uh, yeah, those are actually not just for kids!

I shamelessly (and sweetly) asked a staff member for one, and they kindly obliged.

Getting the stamps is fun and having a Harry Potter passport is pretty much the best souvenir ever.

6. Be sure to check out other Harry Potter filming locations around the UK too

If you’ve made it all the way to Leavesden, you’re actually pretty close to a variety of other Harry Potter filming locations!

While this set tour is of course incredible, there are dozens of other real-life filming locations scattered around the UK that you can visit for yourself. Click here for a full list.

Harry Potter Set Tour Recap with Photos

With those tips out of the way, I’d love to show you some photos and a brief overview of the experience from my visit in 2014. Note that they have added a lot since then, but still…

WARNING: spoilers, spoilers, spoilers.

Some would say that the best way to experience this tour is by seeing everything first hand, but if you are curious to see photos and more, feel free to scroll further.

harry potter tour hogwarts

Your magical experience begins as soon as you walk into the building. All around the lobby are canvases with various Harry Potter characters, as well as props and other cool artifacts hanging off the walls.

Even the task of waiting in line (typically the most mundane thing ever) is a joy for this tour.

The queue moves very quickly and there is plenty for you to nerd out about as you wait.

Most notably, Harry’s  cupboard under the stairs , is right next to the queuing area, ensuring that you get a perfect view of this iconic set.

harry potter tour hogwarts

You’ll notice that groups are taken in based on their spot in line, rather than their timed reservation.

This is why there is some flexibility when it comes to your arrival time.

If you’re a few minutes late, no worries, just hop in the queue and you will make it in all-the-same.

The tour begins with a brief video introduction to the franchise, followed by a preshow featuring Rupert, Daniel and Emma themselves.

As this preshow concludes, the screen reveals the doors to the  Great Hall!  During my tour, they invited any birthday kids to come up and help open the doors.

After  seriously  wishing it was my birthday, I bitterly watched two ecstatic kids live out their childhood dreams, revealing the first stop of the tour, the amazing…

1. Great Hall!

This is the the only part of the tour where your time will be limited, as they let tour groups in every few minutes.

As such, if you want photos, be sure to snap them  quickly !

Being in this room is an unreal feeling. In addition to the long tables, cutlery and elaborate set pieces, you also get to view costumes from students in each house, and important Hogwarts faculty as well!

harry potter tour hogwarts

2. The Big Room

After your time in the Great Hall, you are brought into the  Big Room , which houses a variety of sets, props and costumes.

Here, you are given free reign to explore for yourself and gawk at all the amazing pieces the room contains!

Highlights for me were definitely the  Potions classroom  (complete with a Snape costume on display),  the Gryffindor Common Room  and  the Weasley House .

harry potter tour hogwarts

Many of the sets also have interactive buttons where you can make objects move by pressing them.

This was especially cool in the Weasley kitchen, where the touch of a button could make an iron move on its own, make vegetables chop themselves, etc. Super neat!

harry potter tour hogwarts

For those seeking a sweet photo opp, there are several green screen opportunities to ride a broom as a Quidditch player and more! I didn’t wait in line for this bit, but it definitely looked like a lot of fun! Here are some photos from the Big Room:

harry potter tour hogwarts

3. The Backlot

After perusing the Big Room, you are brought outside to the  Backlot , home to a variety of sets including Harry’s  Privet Drive home , the  Hogwarts Bridge , the  Knight Bus  and of course,  the concession stands!

It’s at this point in the tour that you can live out your childhood fantasy of sipping a nice, cold  butterbeer.

harry potter tour hogwarts

Be sure to explore the bridge before you purchase a butterbeer, as no food or drink is allowed on that set.

harry potter tour hogwarts

Now, while public opinion seems to be split on the taste of butterbeer, I have to say that  I. loved. every. single. sip.

It’s very possible that I was blinded by the magic of my surroundings, but I would argue that it’s worth a try regardless!

NOTE: If you want to purchase a souvenir cup, remember to bring a bag or something to wrap it in, as that stuff can get mighty sticky. Here’s a sample of the cool things you’ll see in the backlot!

harry potter tour hogwarts

4. Art Department, Creature Effects and Diagon Alley

When you’re ready to go back inside, countless wonders from the  creature effects & art department  await you. Here, you really get to appreciate the depth of work put into creating a whole magical world.

I was really wowed by everything.

harry potter tour hogwarts

In this area, you will see masks, wigs, models and more of your favourite magical creatures.

In this second half of the tour as well, you get to walk through Diagon Alley. The details and work in the set will absolutely blow you away. The shops look so real, you’ll be tempted to go knocking on their doors.

harry potter tour hogwarts

5. Hogwarts Castle Model

And lastly, the grand finale of the Harry Potter set tour… The model of Hogwarts!

This one here is a real showstopper.

A walkway surrounding the model allows you to view it from all angles, taking in the fine details of this wonderful school.

For many Harry Potter fans, seeing the castle like this is a dream come true. Now, if only it were real!

harry potter tour hogwarts

At the end of the tour, just before the entrance of the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop, you will see this wonderfully beautiful quote appear on the screen:

harry potter tour hogwarts

It was at this point that  I began to bawl.  I couldn’t help it!

Everything that I loved about the series had been shown to me in the past few hours, and for that short period of time, I got to live out my dream of seeing the magical world that made my childhood.

Messy and gross, I walked into the gift shop, which was a massive treasure trove of things you never knew you wanted or needed. Wands for every character? I’ll take 100.

And there you have it,  the most magical experience ever . One day, I  will   visit the Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but until then, I think this tour has given me enough happy & geeky memories to last. …. At least for the next little while.

Any more questions about visiting the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London?

Over to you – have you ever been to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London? IF NOT, THEN WTF ARE YOU WAITING FOR? No jk, uh I meant to ask, which part would you most look forward to?!

Enjoyed every bit of your blog article.Much thanks again. Really Cool.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

bookmarked!!, I like your blog!

thanks Jane!! 😀

Hi Christina! I’m going to be traveling alone to London this week, would the Harry Potter tour be fun for a solo traveler? Also, I was considering buying a groupon for a night tour, but the picture of you holding the butter beer appears to be outside? I guess we would be missing this part of the tour if I went at night then eh?

hi Lisa, I hope this comment isn’t too late! but YES YES YES the tour would 100% still be fun as a solo traveler (provided that you like Harry Potter haha). I didn’t realize they had a special night tour, but the butterbeer was outside in a special lot where they had lots of big props and set pieces (it’s part of the tour) so I can’t imagine they would leave it out for any reason. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for this article and the pics. I always need to take a peek of the atmosphere beforehand since I’m going solo. I hope they will let me use my selfie stick inside.

Guide to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood

Guests walking into Hogwarts Castle.

If you’re anything like me, the second you walk into Universal Studios Hollywood you make a beeline for one place: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter . Walking through those arches and into Hogsmeade never gets old. From the snowy rooftops to the overflowing cups of Butterbeer to the towers of Hogwarts castle itself, walking through this area of Universal Studios always feels like coming home.

But there’s so much packed into this slice of the wizarding world — how does one even know where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our complete guide to what you have to see, eat, drink and shop for at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

The queue for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, with walls that are lined with portraits.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is home to one of the best rides in the entire theme park: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey . This thrill ride takes you soaring over the Hogwarts grounds, through the Quidditch pitch, into the depths of the Forbidden Forest, past dozens of Dementors and into the school of witchcraft and wizardry itself.

PRO TIP: Download the official Universal Studios Hollywood app and set up a Wait Time Alert for this ride, and all the rides you want to try. It’ll let you know when the line gets to your desired length, giving you more time to explore the wizarding village. That said, the queue for this one is a trip in itself. You’ll wind through Hogwarts castle, past the Gryffindor common room, Dumbledore’s office, the Mirror of Erised, and so many other memorable locales. Wizarding World Fans: this is your heaven.

Flight of the Hippogriff

Guests enjoying the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster.

Want a family-friendly thrill that captures the sensation of flying over Hagrid’s pumpkin patch? This outdoor coaster is for you. The Flight of the Hippogriff begins and ends at Hagrid’s hut, where the groundskeeper instructs you how to properly approach a Hippogriff, a magical creature with a head resembling that of an eagle with the body of a horse, that made for a very memorable Care of Magical Creatures class.

Ollivanders

Dad and daughter using interactive wands at Harry Potter World

Any Harry Potter fan knows Ollivander’s saying “the wand chooses the wizard.” But how does that work, exactly? See for yourself at Ollivanders , makers of fine wands since 382 B.C.. During this interactive show, one lucky guest will interact with a wandkeeper where the wand chooses the wizard. That guest could be you! After, you can find a wand for yourself in the dusty old wand shop.

PRO TIP:  I recommend the interactive wand. This will allow you to perform several spells all over The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including Wingardium Leviosa and Alohomora. Interactive wands come with a map of the area, indicating where you can perform spells. It’ll make you feel like a veritable Hogwarts student.

Triwizard Spirit Rally

Students of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang perform at the Triwizard Rally.

You can also meet the students of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang in Hogsmeade, and see them perform during the Triwizard Spirit Rally ! Catch the other European wizarding schools’ students show off their skills during this five-minute show. Afterwards, hang around to take a picture with them — no Triwizard Cup required.

Check out this amphibious quartet, which performs on the stage in-between Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle. In this 10-minute show, the four-part chorus sings popular Wizarding World songs a cappella. The Frog Choir performs during the seasonal event, Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. As if you needed another excuse to see Hogsmeade lit up in twinkle lights.

WHAT TO EAT & DRINK

Three broomsticks.

harry potter tour hogwarts

This restaurant might be my favorite in the whole theme park. Three Broomsticks is perhaps the best sit-down breakfast option at Universal Studios Hollywood — I always go for the dynamite Traditional English Breakfast (complete with several meats, baked beans, sauteed mushrooms and more), which gives me all the energy I need to face Slytherin on the Quidditch pitch. Shove it, Malfoy!

But if you’re with a group, you should totally take advantage of The Great Feast, a four-person meal with herb roasted chicken, spare ribs, and tons of roasted veggies. Oh, and don’t skip dessert — the Sticky Toffee Pudding is next level delicious, and the Butterbeer Potted Cream is what wizarding dreams are made of.

Hog’s Head

Hog's Head Pub

Speaking of Butterbeer, no trip to Universal is complete without a glass of this iconic beverage!  The non-alcoholic treat comes in three modes: hot, cold, or frozen. (The cold is my preference, but it’s worth sampling all three.) But if you’re looking for something a bit stronger, Hog’s Head has a wide selection of original draught beers and spirits. That includes Hog’s Head Brew, and Dragon Scale, a Scottish ale and a lager, respectively, both brewed exclusively for Universal parks.

WHERE TO SHOP

Hogsmeade is jam-packed with shops, so take a spin through ‘em all while you’re there! But, for the sake of guidance, here are the can’t-misses:

Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods

The Monster Book of Monsters, which has four eyes and sharp teeth.

Speaking of Filch, one of the best places in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to pick up some goods is in Hogwarts itself. At Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods , you can show your house spirit with Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin gear, or even unveil all of Hogwarts’ hidden passageways with your own Marauder’s Map.

I mean, duh. The wizarding candy shop has everything your sweet tooth could ever desire: Chocolate Frogs, Acid Pops, Peppermint Toads, Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans, and so much more. I’m known to drop some serious galleons at Honeydukes whenever I’m there.

Gladrags Wizardwear

Witch robes, but make it fashion. Welcome to Gladrags Wizardwear , the one-stop-shop for all the ritziest wizardwear includes dress robes, hats, ties, jewelry and jumpers. You can even get your very own replica of Heromione’s iconic pink Yule Ball dress from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

WHERE TO POSE

Hogwarts castle.

A mug of butterbeer in front of Hogwarts castle.

This is the shot to get in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. No — at Universal Studios Hollywood! Make your way through Hogsmeade village toward the Triwizard Stage for the best place to stand and pose with the enchanting Hogwarts castle.

Hogwarts Express

Four guests chat with the conductor of the Hogwarts Express.

The Hogwarts Express conductor is there to welcome new arrivals. This is a great opportunity to take a photo with the iconic steam engine as your journey through Hogsmeade village begins. Afterwards, pop into Hogsmeade Station for all the Platform 9 ¾ gear your magical little heart desires.

HARRY POTTER TOURS

Harry potter in scotland.

It’s no secret that J.K Rowling has fallen in love with Scotland since moving here in 1993, and we cannae blame her! The Harry Potter books were dreamt and written in Scotland, taking inspiration from Edinburgh’s enchanting streets, architecture and our stunning Scottish scenery.

One of the most instantly recognisable locations from the films is the Glenfinnan Viaduct, known to Potterheads around the world as the ‘Harry Potter Bridge’. The only way to travel across the iconic arches is, of course, on the Hogwarts Express! Enter into your own wee world of wizardry with a ride on the classic Jacobite Steam Train; voted one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world. It won't take you to Hogwarts, but we can take you on a magical journey to some of the film's top locations such as Glencoe, which was used as the backdrop for the gatehouse - and also Hagrid’s Hut.

Are you even a fan if you don’t experience these Harry Potter filming locations  for yourself?

Check out the tours below for a chance to ride the Hogwarts Express or  visit Alnwick Castle (AKA Hogwarts) and learn to fly a broom on our 1-day castles and broomsticks tour...

Hogwarts in the Snow London

Hogwarts in the Snow London

Hogwarts in the Snow is an annual Christmas feature at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. This festive season, Hogwarts in the Snow London is running from 16 November 2024 to 19 January 2025.

Hogwarts in the Snow London

The Harry Potter studio tour offers a behind-the-scenes look into the incredible work that went into making the films, and during Hogwarts in the Snow, visitors have the chance to see several of the film sets dressed up for Christmas and draped in layers of filmmaking snow. In this post, I’ll share the highlights and what to expect when visiting Hogwarts in the Snow London.

Table of Contents

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

The Harry Potter studio tour is one of our favourite attractions in London . Visiting the Making of Harry Potter tour is a fascinating experience for the whole family, from seeing the authentic film sets to exploring behind-the-scenes secrets to discovering the magic behind the props and special effects. I have visited with my son five times since the WB Studio Tour London opened in 2012, usually during the Hogwarts in the Snow Christmas feature.

Harry Potter Studio Tour London

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is actually located in Leavesden, 20 miles north-west of London, where the Harry Potter film series made its home for more than ten years. The idea behind the Harry Potter studio tour was to preserve and showcase the iconic props, costumes and sets and celebrate the incredible craftsmanship behind the films.

Harry Potter London Studio Tour

The Studio Tour is set adjacent to the working film studios where all eight Harry Potter films were made and visitors can explore two soundstages and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and special effects.

Harry Potter Tour London Diagon Alley Set

In addition to the Hogwarts in the Snow Christmas feature, WB Studio Tour London runs special workshops and themed events at other times of the year, such as “Behind the Seams” sessions on costume design and a popular Dark Arts at Harry Potter Studio Tour feature during the Halloween season. Check their What’s On page for what’s coming up at the WB Studio Tour.

One of the top things to do in London at Christmas , the Hogwarts in the Snow feature at WB Studio Tour London will be running from 16 November 2024 to 19 January 2025. The iconic film sets that visitors will see decorated for festive scenes – with wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees – are the Great Hall, the Gryffindor common room and boys’ dormitory and the Burrow.

The film sets that are transformed for wintry scenes and draped in layers of filmmaking snow during Hogwarts in the Snow, include Diagon Alley, where the cobbled stones and shop fronts are dusted with ‘snow’, Hagrid’s Hut and the Forbidden Forest.

One of the highlights of visiting Hogwarts in the Snow London is seeing the snow-covered miniature scale model of Hogwarts castle at the end of the Studio Tour. Each year, filmmaking snow is meticulously applied to the Hogwarts castle model, just as it was during filming with a crew member sprinkling the ‘snow’ mixture by hand with a sieve from an elevated work platform.

The Great Hall

The Harry Potter Studio Tour begins with a short video introduction about the studio and Harry Potter films. The next moment is one of the best parts of visiting the WB Studio Tour London, when the doors to the Great Hall are opened and visitors can step into the enchanting Great Hall, which, during Hogwarts in the Snow, is beautifully dressed for the festive season with wreaths, garlands and trees.

Harry Potter Studio Tour in London

There are so many amazing details to look out for in the Great Hall and you’ll have a short amount of time to take it all in before the hall is cleared out for the next timed-entry group. This is the only part of the studio tour when time is limited, but you are welcome to come back in again once the next group has entered.

Hogwarts in the Snow London

Each of the long dining tables have a seasonal feast laid out, as they did in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , complete with prop versions of the roast turkeys and hams studded with cherries.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Review

Look for the Christmas trees topped with witches circling on miniature broomsticks and the SFX flaming Christmas puddings on each table. When we visited, one of the crew members demonstrated how the Christmas puddings are lit.

Each of the Great Hall torch holders is a carving of one of the four house animals.

During Hogwarts in the Snow, fireplaces throughout the Harry Potter Studio Tour, including those in the Leaky Cauldron and Great Hall are ‘lit’ with special effects fire, created by John Richardson and the SFX team using a combination of water vapour and lighting effects.

Harry Potter Day Out

At the top section of the Great Hall, visitors will also see the stage transformed for the Yule Ball, with snow-covered Christmas trees, icicles and an orchestra of magical instruments that were painted to match the silver of the Yule Ball.

Hogwarts in the Snow Yule Ball Stage

Once you step out of the Great Hall, the rest of the Harry Potter Studio Tour is self-guided and visitors can take their time exploring until closing time. The magnificent ice sculpture created for the Yule Ball (in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ) is on display just outside of the Great Hall.

Yule Ball Ice Sculpture Harry Potter Tour

The unique gowns and robes worn by staff and students, including Hermione, Viktor Krum and Ron, in the Yule Ball scenes of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were created by costume designer Jany Temime.

Gryffindor Common Room and Boys’ Dormitory

While exploring the next section of the Harry Potter Studio Tour, visitors will see some of the interior sets decorated for festive scenes. For Hogwarts in the Snow London, the Gryffindor Common Room and Boys’ Dormitory are decorated with the original props including handmade Christmas cards, some of which were created by the cast members during production.

The Set Decoration Department chose the tapestries in the Gryffindor Common Room for their medieval look and prominent use of Gryffindor colours – scarlet and gold

The Special Effects Department created several magical household items that physically operated on camera, such as the self-washing frying pan and self-cutting knife shown on, both of which can be switched on by visitors through an interactive display panel at the Burrow interior set.

Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley is one of the best sets to see at the Harry Potter Studio Tour and during Hogwarts in the Snow, the cobblestone paths and magical shopfronts are lightly dusted with filmmaking snow.

Hogwarts Castle Model

The final part of the WB Studio Harry Potter Tour is seeing the intricately-detailed model of the Hogwarts castle. The castle model’s every courtyard, tower and turret were filmed and enhanced with digital effects to create the realistic views of the exterior of Hogwarts seen in the films, starting from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone .

Hogwarts in the Snow Castle Model

During filming, a member of the crew climbed aboard an elevated work platform and sprinkled the ‘snow’ mixture of granulated paper and grains of salt onto the model by hand with a sieve – like dusting sugar onto a cake. Every festive season, the same process takes place at the Harry Potter Studio Tour for the Hogwarts in the Snow feature.

Bodleian Library – Divinity School

Oxfrod Harry Potter Tour Professor Dumbledore Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans

Harry’s first confrontation with Lord Voldemort in the Philosopher’s Stone left him recovering in Hogwarts Infirmary, which was shot in the beautiful Bodleian Library’s Divinity School.

This awesome vaulted space is where Harry wakes up at the end of the first film after confronting Voldemort for the first time.

And where Professor McGonagall teaches Ron how to dance for the Yule Ball in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Professor McGonagall and Filch and Mrs Norris at the Dance Class before the Hogwarts Yule Ball.

Find out how movie director Mike Newell got a natural performance out of the young actors.

Another memorable scene is when Harry uses his Cloak of Invisibility for the first time to enter the restricted section of the Hogwarts Library without being seen.

New College – The Cloisters

Oxford Harry Potter Tour Potter Stinks New College Cloisters

The atmospheric 14th century cloisters within New College doubled as the Hogwarts hallways in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

It is here where Harry pushes through a crowd of his fellow students as they ridicule him with Potter Stinks badges.

It’s also where Harry tips Cedric off about the dragons they’ll be battling in the first task.

And in the middle stands the majestic 200 year old holm oak tree which features in the scene immediately following Harry and Cedric’s exchange where Malfoy taunts Harry, prompting Mad-Eye Moody to turn him into a ferret!

There’s a funny story about the real ‘actor’ ferret…

Finally we will head to the magnificent Christ Church.

Christ Church – The 16th century Dining Hall

Here in the magnificent college of Christ Church is their Dining Hall which provided the inspiration for the Great Hall at Hogwarts. Actually  they never filmed in the Hall , the set was built based on pictures of the real Hall, but it’s instantly recognisable as soon as you walk into its gothic magnificence.

They did film at the top of the grand staircase, where Professor McGonagall famously welcomed Harry, Ron and Hermione and the other students to Hogwarts.

Christ Church – The Cloisters

After Harry has been made seeker for the Gryffindor quidditch team, Hermione tells Harry being a seeker is “in his blood” and shows him a display case in the hallway containing a quidditch trophy with his father James’ name on it.

This scene was filmed here just outside the ancient 12th century Chapter House doorway on the left.

In all these locations you’ll be able to stop, pose for photos, and imagine you’re in the wizardly world of Harry Potter.

Yet Another New ‘Harry Potter’ Experience Announced for Universal, Drops in September

in Universal Studios

Harry Potter flies over the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Japan

Potterheads have plenty to look forward to at Universal as a new addition hits the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

It’s been over a decade since Universal opened its first Wizarding World of Harry Potter area , but  Harry Potter fans still regularly receive new magical experiences at Universal Studios locations worldwide.

Wizarding World of 'Harry Potter's Hogsmeade at Universal Orlando

What started with Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and three attractions – Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey , Flight of the Hippogriff, and Dragon Challenge – has expanded massively over the years . Not only was the latter axed at Islands of Adventure in 2017 and replaced by Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, but Universal Orlando Resort expanded its Wizarding World into the neighboring park, Universal Studios Florida, with an area inspired by Diagon Alley and London in 2014.

Beyond Florida, Universal has also introduced versions of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Beijing.

Guests riding Flight of the Hippogriff in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood

But it’s not done yet. Next year, Universal Orlando Resort will drop yet another Wizarding World expansion at its upcoming third theme park , Epic Universe. This time around, the land will be inspired by the Ministry of Magic, as seen in both the  Harry Potter and  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies.

Before that day comes, Universal is dropping yet another reason for Potterheads to celebrate. Universal Studios Japan has announced its first-ever “Back to Hogwarts” event in September as a part of the park’s 10-year Wizarding World of Harry Potter anniversary.

Held on September 1 (AKA the date that Harry, Ron, Hermione, and other Hogwarts students return to school in the series), this event will reportedly be limited to just 934 guests. This number is specific for a reason; it’s inspired by Platform 9 and 3/4, the magical King’s Cross platform from which students catch the Hogwarts Express.

The event will take place after Universal Studios Japan closes for the day from 9.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. and will allow access to most of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s regular amenities, including Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Ollivander’s Shop . While The Three Broomsticks will not serve food and drink during the event, guests will still be able to enter the restaurant.

There will apparently also be exclusive entertainment for the event. The full announcement (translated from Japanese) reads as follows:

On September 1, 2024, the new semester begins at Hogwarts™ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the area will be rented out exclusively for fans after the park closes, and they can enjoy attractions and special shows that are only available on this day! Why not don a robe, become a Hogwarts™ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry student, and enjoy this special festival that is only available now, where you can immerse yourself in the wizarding world both body and mind!

Guests hoping to go “Back to Hogwarts” will have three opportunities to secure tickets. Two separate lotteries will be held from June 27 to July 7 and July 15 to July 21, while first-come, first-served tickets will also be available from July 29 to August 18. Tickets cost 9,400 yen ($58.58 USD) per person.

If Universal Studios Japan is a little out of reach (especially for a one-hour event), the good news is that there’s plenty of excitement ahead for  Harry Potter fans in the coming years. As was announced in 2023, HBO is moving ahead with a television remake of all seven  Harry Potter books, with author JK Rowling as an executive producer. Amazon’s Audible is also set to produce an audiobook adaptation of the entire series in 2025.

“ Succession ” alums Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod are here for “ Harry Potter .” Gardiner has been tapped to serve as showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s upcoming new untitled series based on the “Harry Potter” books, while Mylod is on board to direct multiple episodes, as well as executive produce.

At the time, Dungey said it was important to have the producers in place before moving on to casting, which will be an entirely new ensemble from the films. “The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those [casting] conversations,” she said back then. “The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12.”

With Gardiner and Mylod in place, casting is indeed believed to be the next order of business. As  announced last year , HBO plans to release the new “Harry Potter” over the course of a decade, with each season based on one of the books in the franchise. The first installment is expected to premiere in 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said on an earnings call earlier this year.

The “Harry Potter” series was originally ordered in April 2023 by HBO Max, which was later renamed Max. But as Variety reported on Tuesday , HBO & Max Content CEO Casey Bloys has moved Warner Bros.’ tentpole development to HBO — which is where “Harry Potter” will now originate. (Of course, as usual, all HBO series — including “Harry Potter” — will still be readily available on Max.)

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” Bloys said in anncouncing the project in April 2023. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World.”

Gardiner, whose credits also include “Killing Eve,” is writer/EP. Besides Gardiner and Mylod, other exec poducers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

The series is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Meanwhile, in that same earnings call earlier this year, Zaslav also revealed that he, Bloys and Dungey had previously traveled to London to meet with “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling.

In that earnings call, Zaslav said he was in London with Bloys and Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros. Television, to meet with author J.K. Rowling about the show.

In addition to the bestselling books, there have been eight “Harry Potter” films, collectively grossing more than $7.7 billion at the global box office. There is also the “Fantastic Beasts” film franchise, theme park attractions, toys, and games, including the video game “Hogwarts Legacy.” There is also the hit Broadway show “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” currently running in New York, London, Hamburg and Tokyo, which serves a sequel to the book series.

Mylod won the Emmy in 2023 for directing the “Succession” episode “Connor’s Wedding.” Both Mylod and Gardiner also won multiple Emmys are part of the hit series’ team.

Christ Church was used as a filming location for the Harry Potter films, with its Tudor Dining Hall doubling up as the iconic Great Hall.

Other scenes from the movie were also filmed inside the university building, including a 16 th century staircase where Harry and the other first-years were greeted by Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

The hallways in Christ Church College were also used as a backdrop in the first Harry Potter films, including a scene where Hermione (played by Emma Watson ) shows Harry (played by Daniel Radcliffe ) the Quidditch trophy his father won.

"Several Oxford University colleges have featured in the movies as the famous school of wizardry and witchcraft."

Holidaymakers can book to stay overnight at Christ Church College during the Easter holidays in March and April.

The university accommodation can also be booked in July, August and September - when the students have headed home for their summer holidays.

"Christ Church bookings are filling rapidly for July and August, but there is still good availability in September."

Sun Online Travel have found overnight stays at Christ Church College in September from £120 per person.

Holidaymakers can also book to stay in other Christ Church buildings, including its St Aldgate and Liddell buildings.

Despite not being in the main college building, visitors will still be able to book to eat breakfast in the Great Hall .

Overnight stays in the Liddell Building are cheaper too, with prices starting from just £30 per night.

Oxford is packed with Harry Potter filming locations , including its New College, which dates back to 1379.

New College was used as a filming location in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where Draco Malfoy is turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody.

Over 18s can book to stay in either single and twin rooms - although there aren't any lifts inside the college building.

Guests can either book on a B&B or self-catering rooms, with each of them having ensuite facilities.

Harry Potter fans can book a room via UniversityRooms.com .
