Next week sees the return of the 43rd Eurocycles Eurobaby Junior Tour to the roads of County Clare. Many of the previously used stages make their return to the 2023 edition over more than 520 kilometres of County Clare Roads which takes place from Tuesday 11th until Sunday 16th July.

135 entries who are of the Junior category (16-18 years old) have been received from domestic teams who will face stiff competition from teams travelling to the Mid-West from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Isle of Man, Netherlands and Portugal.

The competition kicks off on Tuesday evening with a short 48-kilometre opener starting and finishing in Barefield which also hosted the finish of stage 2 of Rás Tailteann this year.

Stage 2 sees the athletes take on a 103-kilometre stage out to the west coast by Spanish Point, Lahinch, Cliffs of Moher, Corrofin and finishing on the Ennis Bypass.

Stage 3 travels from Ennis westbound to Kilkee, a stage of 93.7 kilometres along the Shannon Estuary through Kilrush and onto the Wild Atlantic Way at Kilkee Cliffs before the fast finish into the seaside town.

Stage 4 is 111.7 kilometres and an adjusted stage from previous years based in the north of the county. Aillwee Caves play host to this year’s event for both the start and finish as the race departs on its usual early loop via Carron before racing through the Burren, Ballyvaughan and onto the Coast road for Doolin where the climb of Doonagore (Castle Hill) awaits. From there the riders will race back through the Burren via Lemenagh Castle before tackling the short steep finish to the entrance of Aillwee Cave.

Stage 5 is 87.5 kilometres and sees the riders travel into East Clare along the Tulla Road to Tuamgraney and Scarriff where a number of climbs greet the riders on the same roads as Rás Tailteann this year via Maghera, Crusheen and finishing at Barefield.

Finally, stage 6 remains the same as previous years with 8 laps of a circuit on the outskirts of Ennis taking in the Kilrush road, Ballyea and racing back in the Kildysert road to finish at the Watertower on Clonroadbeg.

Further details of the teams will be announced in the coming days.

Two France rugby players arrested over sexual abuse allegation after woman ‘strangled and beaten’

Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, who featured in France’s 28-13 victory over Argentina on Saturday, have been detained

Oscar Jegou holds the ball during the captain's run

Oscar Jegou and Hugo Auradou, two France players, were arrested in Argentina on Monday following an allegation of sexual abuse that reportedly left a young woman strangled and beaten.

Jegou and Auradou, aged 21 and 20, both started for France in their 28-13 win over Los Pumas in Mendoza on Saturday.

The allegations, which was reported by a young woman from Mendoza, were made after a party took place that night at the city’s Diplomatic Hotel where Fabien Galthié’s squad were staying.

Having travelled to Buenos Aires with the rest of the France squad, the players will be transferred back to Mendoza to be charged.

The operation is said to have been fast-tracked to stop Jegou and Auradou from leaving the country, with France due to play against Uruguay in Montevideo on Wednesday.

“Today a commission from the province of Mendoza is travelling to Buenos Aires to bring them and proceed with doing the relevant examinations,” said Martin Ahumada, a spokesman for the Mendoza prosecutor’s office.

“If the examinations align with the testimony of the victim, the related charge will be made,” he told Agence France-Presse.

Local publication MDZ outlined that the players met the alleged victim at a nightclub before returning to the Diplomatic Hotel. There, MDZ has reported, developed a “wild situation” with “a lot of violence”, leaving the alleged victim strangled and beaten.

The law firm of attorney Natacha Romano, which will represent the victim, is quoted as claiming that “there is a lot of genetic evidence”.

“If the facts are proven, they are incredibly serious. You must spare a thought for the young woman,” said French Rugby Federation (FFR) president Florian Grill in an impromptu press conference on Monday night.

“It’s the opposite of everything that rugby is, of everything that rugby does, of everything that rugby builds... But you must let the investigation, which is necessary, take place,” he added.

The French Rugby Federation (FFR) said on Tuesday evening the players had confirmed having sexual relations with the woman, but denied all forms of violence.

“For the moment, the investigation is following its course,” the FFR said. “The Federation is currently waiting for the testimony from the presumed victim and the players. The next steps of the investigation will continue from tomorrow.”

France head coach Fabien Galthie told reporters: “For the squad, the delegation, it’s been a trauma, a form of astonishment, when we heard what happened. It’s a very difficult time.”

RMC Sport reported on Tuesday that Jegou’s representative informed the French media outlet that the player denies any sexual violence or aggression.

The agent confirmed to RMC that a sexual liaison between the two players and the young woman did take place but that it was entirely consensual. The morning after the alleged incident, the young woman headed immediately to the police station, with Jegou’s agent telling RMC Sport he believes the players were “victims of a scam which sometimes happens in Argentina, targeting high-profile personalities”.

The arrests came a day after a racism scandal that saw France full-back Melvyn Jaminet sent home from the tour. Jaminet was removed after a video of him making racist comments emerged on social media.

“I promise, the first Arab I see on the road, I’ll headbutt him,” Jaminet is filmed as saying in the Instagram video.

Jaminet subsequently apologised for his remarks after being kicked out of the squad.

“I am deeply sorry and ashamed of my comments,” Jaminet said on Instagram. “Racism, in all its forms, is unacceptable and goes against everything I believe in.

“I understand the FFR’s punishment and remain at their disposition to be able to shine a light on this incident.”
