Biliran Tourist spots

Last Updated on September 25, 2023

Biliran off Leyte’s north coast is a nice island to explore for a couple of days. You’ll get a taste of the real rural Philippines without many tourists and even less foreign tourists. Biliran has a lot of natural wonders to offer, the rice terraces are reminiscent of a smaller Banaue, several waterfalls make it the perfect place to relax and cool down for a while and the many islands off Biliran’s coast are offering paradise-like beaches. Read on to discover some of the best Biliran tourist spots and things to do on the island.

Top Biliran tourist spots and activities

1 – island hopping in biliran.

Biliran offers some great island hopping opportunities not far from its coast. The beaches there are amazing and the islands offer some nice snorkeling spots. Here are a couple worth visiting :

Sambawan Island

Sambawan is one of the best Biliran tourist spots, the island has a beautiful beach and offers an amazing view of the neighboring islands. To get to Sambawan Island, you can hire a boat directly in Kawayan. For travelers on a budget you can ride the public boat in the morning (departing from Naval) to Maripipi and from there hire a boat to take you. You can either camp on Sambawan (bring enough food and water) or stay at the only hotel in Maripipi, Napo Beach resort, for 500 pesos per night (starting price). The return trip is the next morning.

Higatangan, Dalutan, and Caygan Islands

Higatangan island is famous for its shifting sandbar, moving along with the tides. You can include it with island hopping in nearby Dalutan and Caygan islands . For the three islands, you’ll pay around 4500 pesos for a small boat. You can arrange it through your hotel or directly in Kawayan Beach. The prices are pretty expensive, if you can arrange it in advance you can ask the operators to group you with other travelers. Otherwise, you can go only to Dalutan and Caygan, they’re closer to the coast so the price won’t be that hefty.

2- Do go chasing waterfalls

Casiawan Fall, Biliran tourist spots

There are maybe 20 waterfalls to visit in Biliran, some of them are among the top Biliran tourist spots. You can swim in most of them and the water is usually really clear. Amongst the most famous ones are: Bagongbong, Tinago, Tomalistis, Casiawan, and Balaquid falls.

Before going always ask your hotel first about the water condition there. Sometimes some of them have no water especially at the end of the dry season or after a bad storm. Since the last storm in December 2017, which badly hit the island, Tinago Falls (the most famous one) is only a trickle.

3 – Enjoy the beach

Sunset, Biliran, Philippines

Unfortunately, Biliran is lacking some nice beaches. The shore is mostly rocky and there are not many sandy beaches. But don’t worry, there are still some options. Kawayan beach is pretty nice and good for swimming. There are a couple of resorts there if you want to stay near the beach. It’s also from there that you can arrange island hopping.

Looc in Culaba is also supposed to have a nice beach. The only thing I found there that could be called a beach was more like a vision from hell. Picture a small rocky beach with dozens of nippa huts all super close to each other, and each one having a karaoke machine. Imaging now all these nippa huts full of people having a good time, Filipino style. That’s the supposedly “nice” beach I found.

I guess the beach I had read about is somewhere else nearby but I didn’t see any signs of a beach on my way. So to be on the safe side maybe just stick to Kawayan beach.

4 – Take a bath in a hot spring

Ma-Init Hot Springs, Biliran, Philippines

Biliran being a volcanic island, you’ll find several hot springs there. The nicer one is Ma-Init, they have dug holes in the river to make it comfortable. It’s a must-see Biliran tourist spots. The area is surrounded by rice paddies and buffaloes. There’s also a waterfall nearby called Napusoan, it takes around 30 minutes to get there trekking.

Another hot spring is Libtong . It’s also really nice and you can swim in the river there. They built a natural pool. It’s the best place to finish a day after exploring the island.

5 – Visit Canaan Hill Farm and Honey Garden

Biliran tourist spots, Philippines

This organic farm and garden offer some delicious food and home-made products. It’s the perfect place to have lunch or a snack before continuing exploring the island.

Closed on Sundays.

6 – Explore the rice terraces

Rice terraces, Biliran, Philippines

Biliran’s interior also has a lot to offer, driving up to Palayan or Iyusan will give you a breathtaking view of the coconut farms and terraced rice fields. The road to the viewpoint is also spectacular and definitively worth the trip. You can get a map at the tourism office or at your hotel. The road to Palayan is ok for a motorbike, I’m not sure a tricycle can go though.

Where to stay in Biliran :

There are plenty of accommodation options in Biliran, the easiest way would be to stay in Naval. It’s a central location and it’s easy to arrange your trip from there. There are also some resorts on Kawayan Beach, a good choice if you plan on doing island hopping.

I stayed in Chamorita , a couple of kilometers south of Naval, it’s a nice place and you can rent a motorbike there, it might be more complicated to find a bike rental in town.

Caibiran is one of the many small 5th class communities on Biliran Island in the Visayas Islands of the central Philippines . Despite the ravaging of typhoons, Caibiran has bounced back time and again and possesses stunning beaches.

Caibiran’s main appeal to visitors is its out-the-way feel. It is located off the coast, a few kilometers inland, and lies amid lovely lush scenery. There are several falls within a reasonable hike of town, including the lofty Tinago Falls. These falls plummet almost 30m from a high stone ridge into the most inviting pools of anywhere.

Large boulders and dense forest surround the falls and you can even get to them by motorbike. Tinago Falls are not to be confused with the falls of the same name in Iligan City on Mindanao .

Tourist facilities in Caibiran include a few guest houses and quaint hotels along with some restaurants and bars, although there is nothing of real substance to write home about.

Getting There & Away

Caibiran is around 130kms north of Tacloban City, the main gateway to Biliran Island . Tacloban has an airport with flights from Manila and Cebu - 90 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. Transfer time to Caibiran by bus from Tacloban is a few hours via Biliran town.

Biliran waterfalls you can visit in a day

My boyfriend Hali and I went here in 2017 during a 5-day backpacking trip in Visayas . To be honest, I’m not crazy about waterfalls because I prefer to avoid trekking as much as possible, but Hali likes exploring the wild, so I arranged a habal-habal tour for us.

The day trip itinerary includes Ulan-Ulan Falls (Almeria), Recoletos Falls (Almeria), Pondol Falls (Almeria), Bagongbong Falls (Almeria), and Tinago Falls (Caibiran).

It’s possible to do this on a half-day — in fact this is the usual itinerary of tourists in the island. For us, we had a whole day to allocate for this activity because we were staying overnight for an island hopping tour the day after. Spending a day is recommended if you want a more relaxed itinerary. You can stay and swim in the waterfalls, instead of just having to snap-and-go.

Here are the waterfalls we visited.

Ulan-Ulan Falls is our first stop. From the jump-off area in Almeria, we trekked for about 30 minutes to get here.

Ulan-Ulan Falls in Biliran

Ulan-Ulan Falls is the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines I’d seen. At about 100 feet high, its a grand spectacle to behold.

What sets it apart from other waterfalls in the country is that it remains untouched in the wild. No part of the trail or basin has been changed. A lot of nice waterfalls in the country is developed by LGUs for easier access and better facilities. Some examples are Tumalog Falls and Kawasan Falls in Cebu. While this is better for tourism, it can be off-putting to see commercial stores blocking the view of nature. It goes without saying that natural beauty is still incomparable.

The current was strong on our visit. The sound cuts through the quiet of the forest. I stayed on the boulders area, while Hali took a short dip in the catch basin.

Just above Ulan-Ulan Falls is Recoletos Falls.

It’s a 40-feet waterfall with a refreshing dark-green basin. This is where we took our time swimming. Hali also dived from one of the trees to the water below.

Recoletos Falls, Almeria, Biliran

I’m not sure why it’s considered a different waterfall because it seems to me that Recoletos Falls and Ulan-Ulan Falls are part of a single waterfall system.

Our next destination is Pondol Falls. It’s only several minutes away from Ulan-Ulan Falls and Recoletos Falls. We drove for 15-20 minutes and we passed by the better part of Iyusan Rice Terraces. Then we walked for 15 minutes to reach the main stream.

Iyusan rice terraces in Biliran

We were initially reluctant to visit Pondol Falls because Hali read about roaming thieves in the area, but since it’s near we decided to give it a go.

Pondol Falls is a 25- to 30-feet waterfall with a wide basin ideal for swimming. It looks small in photos, but it’s actually a medium-sized falls. Hali and I both liked it best for swimming compared to the first waterfalls we’d visited. The pool at the bottom of Pondol Falls is wide, and the water is cool & fresh.

There were local families and kids having a picnic when we arrived. We saw them submerging bottles of soft drinks to make them cold. We watched some of the kids jumping from the cliffside of the waterfall. Hali followed suit, while I swam near the side.

Pondol Falls in Biliran

Bagongbong Falls is another waterfall in Almeria, near Ulan-Ulan Falls and Recoletos Falls.

It stands about 30 feet high, with a cold, greenish basin surrounded by rocks. This waterfall is usually not included in day trip itineraries. If you like visiting off-beaten places where you can be alone, then this is a good spot to visit.

We didn’t visit Bagongbong Falls because the guide we hired was not familiar with the routes.

Tinago Falls, Biliran

Tinago Falls is a 90-feet waterfall in Caibiran. It’s different from the similarly named Tinago Falls in Iligan . Tinago means “hidden”, but this is a misnomer. Of the Biliran waterfalls we’d visited, it’s the most developed one.

It’s located in Tinago Eco-Tourism Park, which features an amphitheater where you can sit and enjoy picnics near the bottom pools, shower rooms, and rest rooms. The main waterfall itself is untouched, so you can still enjoy its natural beauty. All in all, it’s one of the better-managed waterfalls in the country.

There were other groups of tourists when we arrived, but few actually swam in the main basin of Tinago Falls because of the strong current and huge boulders. It would’ve been easy to be swept away.

We stayed here for a bit before changing to dry clothes and then heading back to our resort in Biliran.

In summary, here are the waterfalls you can visit on a day trip.

  • Ulan-Ulan Falls (Almeria)
  • Recoletos Falls (Almeria)
  • Pondol Falls (Almeria)
  • Bagongbong Falls (Almeria)
  • Tinago Falls (Caibiran)

If you have more time, here are other accessible waterfalls you can visit.

  • Kasabangan Falls (Cabucgayan) . It’s said to be the smallest waterfall in Biliran. However, tourists still visit here for the adventure, as it’s located high up in Cabucgayan.
  • Casiawan Falls (Cabucgayan) . At about 130 feet high, this is the highest waterfall in Biliran.
  • Tomalistis Falls (Caibiran) . It is considered the sweetest-tasting water by Guinness .

You can also visit Mainit Hotspring . We skipped this one because a local we’d talked with said it has become dirty and neglected and similar reviews from TripAdvisor say the same thing.

There is limited public transport in Biliran to take you to the waterfalls. You will need to hire a habal-habal to tour you around.

You can easily find a habal-habal guide once you arrive in Biliran. You can also pre-book in advance by getting in touch with your reserved accommodation or by scheduling with a specific guide.

Here’s a recommended guide: Kuya Fernando at 09073283676.

Disclaimer: Kuya Fernando was recommended by other people to us. We had a different guide on our visit, but we do not want to recommend our guide because he was unreliable. He was late, unfamiliar with the routes, and tried to overcharge us more than our agreed price. It almost ruined our experience, but thank goodness the waterfalls we’d visited was worth it.

Here are the current rates ( Updated as of 2020 )

  • Habal-habal tour : No standard rate, depends on your haggling skill. The usual rate is P1000 for a whole-day tour, good for 2 people.
  • Entrance fees : There are minimal fees to some of the waterfalls (about P20 per person).
  • Make sure to wear durable footwear good for trekking.
  • Things to bring: water bottle, towel, change of clothes.
  • A half day or whole day is sufficient to visit the best waterfalls in Biliran. The rest of the waterfalls in the province are too small or undeveloped.

Sambawan Island, Biliran

Hi! Thank you for this guide! I was wondering how much of the day was consumed when you guys visited these falls?

We started at 9AM and were back at the resort at around 5PM, I think. We were staying in Talahid and it’s about 30 minutes from the town proper, but it’s close to Ulan-Ulan and Recoletos Falls.

Adrenaline Romance

That is Sampao River! We rappelled down those waterfalls during our canyoning experience. And yes, the water is quite chilly! hehehe!

caibiran biliran tourist spots

Biliran is an emerging tourist destination in Eastern Visayas that can compete with other well-known tourist attractions such as Boracay and Palawan. The province has numerous natural attractions such as majestic waterfalls, beautiful beaches and cavernous caves. Its attractions are still unspoiled that needs to be discovered.  So here are five (5) tourist destinations in Biliran that are worth visiting: 1. Caucab Rice Terraces in Almeria

caibiran biliran tourist spots

The Caucab Rice Terraces in Almeria are just one of the many smaller versions of the more popular Banaue Rice Terraces found in Biliran. Maybe it’s not comparable to the majestic rice terraces of Ifugao, but Caucab is still worth seeing because of its wide and gently sloping landscape. This man-made attraction is situated in Brgy. Caucab, Almeria. Other rice terraces that can be found in the town of Almeria are situated in Brgy. Iyusan, Sampao and Salangi.

2. Tinago Falls in Caibiran

caibiran biliran tourist spots

(For the waterfalls in Iligan bearing the same name, click here) Tinago Falls is one of the best attractions offered by the province of Biliran. It is simply a hidden paradise worth discovering.  The name “Tinago” is a Visayan term for “hidden” which fits the place. The hypnotic waterfall blends perfectly with nature as its cold waters cascade beautifully in breathtaking scenery. Other waterfalls that can be found in Biliran are Casiawan Falls in Cabucgayan; Bagongbong Falls and Ulan-Ulan Falls in Almeria. 3. Mainit Hot Spring in Caibiran

caibiran biliran tourist spots

Also located in the municipality of Caibiran, the Mainit Hot Spring is a popular tourist attraction. The hot spring is known for its healing prowess where tourist can take a relaxing dip in the natural pool and relieve muscle pains.  Mainit Hot Spring’s warm water is also good in alleviating rheumatism, skin allergies and arthritis.

4. Sambawan Island of Maripipi

caibiran biliran tourist spots

This island-paradise is dubbed as the “Undiscovered Paradise” of Biliran. Sambawan Islands have two islets connected by boulders. During high tide, it transforms into three islets. It is blessed with crystalline waters with beautiful white-sand beach. The island is also rich in marine diversity making it a good dive site. The mountainous coastline provides tourist a jaw-dropping view of the island. 5. Higatangan Island of Naval

caibiran biliran tourist spots

Higatangan Island is famous for its long stretch of powdery white sand which extends about 200 meters to the pristine sea. The island boasts crystal-clear waters and an abundance of marine life. Its western side is conceivably the most beautiful part of the island because of its unstained beaches, coral gardens, lush coconut trees, rock formations and cool turquoise waters.
