Catherine Tate Dr Who, Queen of Oz stars as single mum Peggy Hodgson while David Threlfall Funny Woman, Shameless plays ghost hunter Maurice Grosse.

Further casting is to be revealed.

The Hodgson’s had no idea what a poltergeist was when, in the summer of 1977, furniture and toys started moving of their own accord. An ordinary, working-class family, who lived in a north London council house became the centre of one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world. This is the story of one night in the spring of 1978 when events were approaching a climax. Based on the first-hand accounts of one of the ghost hunters, The Enfield Haunting is the true story of what happened when a dedicated single mother, tries to protect her three children from something that is incomprehensible, deeply disturbing and is hurtling to a terrifying conclusion.

Directed by Angus Jackson, full creatives are to be announced.

The Enfield Haunting will play at London’s The Ambassadors Theatre from 30 November 2023 currently booking through to 2 March 2024.

Catherine Tate returns to the West End

In new poltergeist thriller The Enfield Haunting,

Catherine Tate is to return to the West End stage in a new psychological thriller.

The Queen Of Oz star will appear opposite  David Threlfall in The Enfield Haunting, based on a famous poltergeist event.

In August 1977, single parent Peggy Hodgson called police to her council house claiming she had witnessed furniture moving and that her children had heard knocking sounds on the walls.

Over a period of 18 months, more than 30 people, including neighbours, paranormal investigators and journalists, said they saw heavy furniture moving of its own accord, objects being thrown across a room and the sisters seeming to levitate several feet off the ground. However skeptics believe it to have been a hoax that got out of hand.

Tate said of her new role as Peggy: ‘I’m thrilled to be part of The Enfield Haunting and can’t wait to start working with the first-class creative team and the brilliant David Threlfall.’

The show has been written by Casualty co-creator  Paul Unwin, who said: ‘Before Guy Lyon Playfair, the poltergeist expert died in 2018, I spent a long afternoon with him in his basement flat in Earls Court.

‘He and Maurice Grosse had spent months with the Hodgson family trying to protect them, but also make sense of what was going on. What Guy told me was terrifying.

‘So much of what appears to have happened was impossible to fake and yet at the centre of the whole thing were real people trying to make sense of their lives. The Enfield Haunting is a psychological ghost story. It is a ghost story for now.’

Directed by Angus Jackson, The Enfield Haunting will play at Brighton Theatre Royal and Richmond Theatre before moving to The Ambassadors Theatre in the West End from November 30 to March 2.  Tickets are  available here .

As Chortle reported yesterday , Tate’s Queen Of Oz has shed two-thirds of its audience since it began four weeks ago, according to overnight viewing figures.

This was a great show with amazing actors, but I have to say it was to loud for me (as a tactic to scare the audience). I had to close one of my ears the whole time, then again I am too sensitive to noise. The play was amazing otherwise.

About The Enfield Haunting

Do you believe in ghosts? Discover The Enfield Haunting - the shocking true story of an ordinary family that claimed to be haunted by a poltergeist. Book Enfield Haunting tickets on London Theatre today.

At first glance, 284 Green Street appears to be a typical council house in Enfield, North London. It’s a home where single mother Peggy Hodgson hopes to raise her children comfortably and securely. That is until two of her daughters witness some seemingly supernatural occurrences - strange sounds, disembodied voices, furniture moving of its own accord, and children levitating several feet above the ground.

It’s one thing for a ghost to make its presence known in a remote old castle or gothic ruin. It’s quite another for a ghost to pray upon an ordinary London family like the Hodgsons. If it could happen to them, could it happen to you?

Doctor Who’s Catherine Tate stars as Peggy Hodgson, the single mother trying to protect her children from the spirits that seem to be invading their house. Shameless star David Threlfall plays Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator convinced that the hauntings were genuine.

This thrillingly scary new play by Paul Unwin follows first-hand accounts of the famous Enfield poltergeist from Guy Lyon Playfair, an actual ghost hunter on the scene at Green Street in 1978. Over afternoon tea, Playfair played his actual recordings from the alleged poltergeist for Unwin.

What do you think might have happened? There’s only one way to find out. Book your tickets to The Enfield Haunting on London Theatre.

About The Enfield Haunting

Haunting or hoax? Catherine Tate and David Threlfall star in The Enfield Haunting at Ambassadors Theatre for a limited time only. Book The Enfield Haunting tickets on TodayTix.

The Enfield Haunting is a new psychological thriller exploring the tale of one of the most baffling poltergeists ever haunted London. For decades, people have wondered whether one of the most famous cases of supernatural activity was due to the presence of an actual ghost or the clever workings of two teenage girls. In The Enfield Haunting , playwright Paul Unwin investigates the mystery as never before.

1978, Enfield, London. Single mother Peggy Hodgson has been trying to raise her four children in their perfectly ordinary council house on Green Street. However, strange and spooky events began to unfold. The children were seemingly levitating, chairs overturned, and disembodied voices echoed through the house. It appears mischief is occurring, either in the form of a poltergeist or something more sinister entirely. Tensions mount to an unbelievably disturbing and frightening climax in this new thriller.

Get ready to be enthralled and terrified by this chilling new play based on the real events of the Enfield Poltergeist . Book Enfield Haunting tickets on TodayTix.

More information about The Enfield Haunting

The Enfield Haunting features Catherine Tate ( Doctor Who ) as Peggy Hodgson and David Threlfall ( Shameless ) as investigator Maurice Grosse. The play is largely inspired by a first-hand account of the events, told to playwright Paul Unwin by Grosse’s colleague and fellow ghost hunter Guy Lyon Playfair. He played some of his audio recordings from the investigation for Unwin over afternoon tea, who was mesmerised.

For eighteen months back in the late 1970s, neighbours, investigators, and journalists tried to decipher the mystery of the Enfield Poltergeist that was said to be haunting a home in North London. Some people became convinced that Peggy’s daughters, Janet and Margaret, were behind it all. While Janet supposedly admitted to deceiving journalists, she later retracted her statement; paranormal investigators were divided over whether or not they believed her. The true identity of the person (or spirit) behind the hauntings remains unknown to this day.

What to watch for

  • Catherine Tate is no stranger to the stage and won an Olivier Award for her performance as Beatrice in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing opposite her Doctor Who co-star, David Tennant.
  • David Threlfall is best known for his portrayal of Frank Gallagher in the British TV series Shameless. His performance earned him a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Actor.
  • The infamous Enfield case has also inspired other retellings, including Sky Arts 2015 TV show The Enfield Haunting and the 2016 film The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case .
