Protesters with smoke bombs tackled after interrupting 72nd hole of 2024 Travelers Championship

Play was only delayed a matter of minutes in connecticut.

police-travelers.png

Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim approached the green on the 72nd hole of the 2024 Travelers Championship with the same goal: winning the final signature event of the PGA Tour season. Seconds later, their focus changed to avoiding a handful of protesters who charged the green with smoke bombs.

Police and security on the scene quickly contained the situation, tackling the protesters and removing them from the field of play as fans chanted "U-S-A" and "ass-hole."

Still, white and red powder remained on the green as Scheffler, Kim and Akshay Bhatia looked to complete their fourth rounds with rules officials deeming that play would continue despite the interruption and change to the surface.

In total, the disruption only lasted a few of minutes with Scheffler's ensuing birdie putt landing within inches of the hole. Kim, who trailed by one stroke entering the expected final hole of the tournament, drained his birdie to force a playoff with Scheffler, a five-time PGA Tour winner already this season.

The PGA Tour determined that it was in the best interest of players and the event to cut a new hole for the playoff -- which started on that same 18th hole -- to avoid any lingering debris on the putting surface. Unfortunately for Kim, he could not keep his momentum going. He scored bogey in the playoff, while Scheffler won for the sixth time on the PGA Tour this season with a par.

PGA Tour players welcomed by 'luscious' and wet course at Detroit Golf Club

The scoring-friendly environment and healthy green grass at Detroit Golf Club is a welcome sight for PGA Tour golfer Min Woo Lee after grinding through Pinehurst No. 2 in his previous event, the U.S. Open.

Lee finished 5-over in the U.S. Open then skipped the Travelers Championship last week to prepare for his first stop at the Rocket Mortgage Classic from home in Las Vegas. Lee, a tour rookie ranked No. 64 in the FedEx Cup standings, is ready for the new environment on Detroit’s northside after grinding through one of the toughest courses on the Tour this season.

FULL DETAILS: 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Here are the events this week at Detroit Golf Club

“The course looks amazing,” said Lee, a native of Australia. “Coming from the U.S. Open, it’s a bit greener so it’s quite nice. Hopefully the weather holds.”

Lee, one of the top-ranked players in the 156-player field set to tee off Thursday, spoke to the media Tuesday after a torrential thunderstorm pounded the course with rain for most of the morning and partially delayed proceedings.

The thick rough and “luscious” greens, as Lee described them, received an extra amount of water two days before the tournament begins due to the two-hour thunderstorm. But the sea of green was a welcome sight for Lee, who spent the last fortnight training in the unrelenting Vegas heat after playing a challenging and dried-out Pinehurst.

“If we played (Pinehurst) every week, I’d probably have no hair by now,” the 25-year-old rookie said. “It’s nice to just come to a course that’s really green and luscious."

The relative ease of Detroit Golf Club’s setup leads to a lower scoring environment for the Rocket Mortgage Classic compared to some other PGA Tour stops. Rickie Fowler won the 2023 tournament at 24-under after prevailing in a three-man playoff, and 2022 winner Tony Finau shot 26-under.

“I find making birdies fun; bogies aren’t fun,” Lee said.

The key to going low, he said, was to be accurate off the tee with his driver. Despite not playing in Detroit before, the scouting report Lee received from the Tour and other players he talked to said low scores are possible if you can be aggressive and straight with the biggest club in the bag.

“It’s a course where you can hit driver a lot and take advantage of a lot of corners,” Lee said. “I guess take advantage if you do hit driver well. Hopefully, I can do that this week.”

Willie Mack III, the Flint native who qualified via the John Shi p pen Invitational , said he will be ready for any conditions on the course after experiencing two different weather days in the 36-hole tournament he won last weekend, and seeing the wet course after the rain today.

“Just seeing those conditions and different aspects hopefully will help me this week,” Mack said. “I’m not sure about the plan this week but if it’s windy at least I know what clubs not to hit. I know it’s wet out, it’s not a firm course this week.”

Mack is making his second appearance in the Rocket Mortgage Classic — he played on a sponsor's exemption in 2021 — and his ninth on the PGA Tour. Mack's 2021 appearance was the first time he made the cut on Tour. He hopes to take advantage of his course knowledge thanks to playing Detroit Golf Club “a million times” in his life and the quality golf he’s been playing recently, including the John Shippen win and qualifying for the U.S. Open to take advantage of his spot.

“I’ve been playing well,” Mack said. “It’s just when you get these opportunities, I gotta keep and play well. Not let these opportunities go to waste.”

Golfer downs three beers before Rocket Mortgage Classic Monday qualifier playoff, then advances to his first PGA Tour event

O ne of the better follows on golf social media is Monday Q Info , powered by Ryan French. In his latest hunt for great content, he brings us Nick Bienz, who survived a playoff in the Monday qualifier for the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Bienz was one of five golfers to post a 7-under 65 at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan, but there were only four spots available, so off to a 5-for-4 playoff they went. It was Bienz gunning it out alongside Danny Guise, Angelo Giantsopoulos, Brandon Berry and Beau Breault.

But before the playoff started, Bienz, in attempt to calm his nerves, pounded three cold ones.

The eight-hole playoff finally ended when Breault was odd man out, coming up short against two birdies on the final hole.

As for Bienz, he has never played in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. Now he'll be one of 156 golfers in the field at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday morning. He'll find out his grouping Tuesday afternoon.

Pro golfer Bo Van Pelt even made a plea to Bienz's employer, Golf Galaxy.

"I have to call my boss and call off work tomorrow for sure," Bienz told French after his round. "I'm supposed to be there at 7:30 in the morning [Tuesday] and I don't think that's going to happen."

Among those who came up short in the Monday qualifier were Robert Garrigus, Ryan Palmer and Michael Gligic.

Tying a ‘bo’ on the very last korn ferry tour q-school.

  • Brentley Romine ,
  • Brentley Romine

hoag_1920_kft_qschool22.jpg

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Bo Hoag chuckled when told he’d forever be the answer to a trivia question.

Who was the last medalist in Korn Ferry Tour Q-School history?

“I didn’t even think about that,” said Hoag, the 34-year-old former PGA Tour player who medaled by a shot Monday at final stage to earn fully exempt status on the Korn Ferry Tour next year. “That’s kind of cool.”

Hoag spent three seasons on Tour before losing his card a couple of months back, yet he relished his upcoming opportunity to “reestablish” his game and learn how to contend again in professional golf’s version of Triple A.

In 13 months, however, any player in Hoag’s position will bypass the KFT and instead receive the call-up straight to the big leagues as PGA Tour Q-School is set to return for the first time in over a decade.

The Tour announced last June that, beginning in 2023, the top five players and ties at final stage would garner PGA Tour cards, marking the first time that will happen since 2012, when 26 players, including Patrick Reed, Billy Horschel and Chez Reavie, graduated to the PGA Tour. The latest rendition sees a decrease from 2012 in terms of the number of PGA Tour cards up for grabs, but the change coincides with the KFT nixing its Finals format and moving toward 30 PGA Tour cards handed out at the culmination of its 26-event calendar.

Full field scores from the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament

“I think it’s pretty awesome,” said Vince India, who tied for 24 th Monday to earn guaranteed starts for fifth time in eight career trips to final stage of KFT Q-School. “I was never an enormous fan of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals system. … Yeah, it’s great some guys can get hot for a few weeks, but I don’t think it brings the best to the top. I think a 26-event regular season for 30 spots is a better examination of who’s playing the best golf at that time, and then everyone will have their two months or so to get ready for final stage.

“I always thought final stage was a nice get together for a PGA Tour card. Next year will be really cool. Hopefully, it’ll be on TV.”

Remember the dramatic moments of PGA Tour Q-School pasts?

Mac O’Grady finally passing his Q-School test on his 17 th try in 1982.

Cliff Kresge falling into a lake while reading a putt during the final round in 2000 before shaking it off and rallying to earn his card.

Joe Daley missing by a shot in 2004 after his ball hit the bottom of a crooked metal cup and bounced back out on the last hole.

Harrison Frazer shooting 59 en route to winning by eight shots in 2008.

It’s not that KFT Q-School didn’t produce excitement or emotion. Scottie Scheffler needed an up-and-down on his final hole to earn guaranteed starts. Last season’s KFT No. 1, Justin Suh, did the same, only his final-hole heroics came in the form of a difficult two-putt par. Xander Schauffele got through in 2015, but just barely at T-45.

Even this year there were examples of both. Tim Widing threaded a 5-iron through the trees to set up a 12-foot birdie that helped him finish two shots inside the top 40 and ties, and he then phoned his fiancée, both in tears. Willie Mack III, with many family members in attendance (including his father, who foreclosed on his home twice while helping fund his son’s golf dreams), fired a closing 66 to secure guaranteed starts.

“It’s been a long road,” Mack said. “But I never lost faith and never gave up.”

Both heartfelt moments. But when PGA Tour cards were taken out of the equation in 2013, it’s hard to argue that some air wasn’t let out of the balloon. As Spencer Levin admitted of Q-School these past 10 years, “I’d be lying if I said it didn’t [lose some of its luster].”

“Just because of the glamor of the Tour,” explained Levin, who earned a PGA Tour card at Q-School in 2009. “It’s a big deal to get your PGA Tour card. … And now you add 500 grand on top of that, that’s going to be even more pressure.”

Levin is talking about the Tour’s new earnings assurance program that, starting this season, implements a $500,000 league minimum up front against players’ season earnings. The new initiative is part of sweeping changes across the Tour’s competitive landscape, including at the top – elevated events, elimination of the wraparound season and only the top 70 in FedExCup points keeping fully exempt status for the following year, to name a few.

Still left, though, are answers to what next year’s Q-School will fully look like.

We know there will be PGA Tour cards available, and the dates for final stage will move from November to December to accommodate the KFT season finishing in October and the completion of the Tour’s newlook fall, which has its fair share of details outstanding as well. But that’s it.

The Landings Club, which has hosted the past two final stages, won’t be back for 2023, and a new venue has yet to be determined.

And when it comes to field size and who all will fill that field, discussions remain in the works.

“I’ve heard word that not everyone from the top 75 on Korn Ferry Tour is going to be able to go,” India said.

As the unwrapping continues, a bow has been tied on KFT Q-School – or should we say “Bo.”

“I talked to my family after and I said, ‘Hey, I won Q-School.’ That sticks with people if they won Q-School,” Hoag said. “I don’t know how many people, thousands maybe sign up for Q-School, and to be the last guy standing is definitely a real gratifying moment.”

He also received a trivia question.

The next guy will get a PGA Tour card.
