  • Venust 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fun Island Hopping Tour My friend and I would like to cover as many places as we can for the limited time we had so we decided to take the 5 Island Hopping Tour with lunch at Sloth Island. We were at the meeting point at 6:15 am. Our tour guide was Chris. He was very knowledgeable, pleasant, friendly, and delightful. We did stop at Fort Island, Bartica, Sloth Island where we had delicious lunch, and Baracara Falls. Since the tide was low we were not able to stop at Fort Kyk. I would highly recommend this company. Oh, I almost forgot — Triscilla was very helpful, too. Read more Written May 1, 2024

He is so knowledgeable and professional, a great asset to visitors to Guyana. You could ask him any question and he had a knowledgeable answer. It is lovely to get out of Georgetown and see the historical sites and what is happening in the area. Even waiting for the pontoon bridge to open in the morning gives you a taste of what life is like for the people of Guyana. You have a wonderful country with great people and while huge changes are underway please don't lose your heart! Opps nearly forgot to say lunch was great, great portions and very tasty! Triscilla & Roselyn were both super responsive and helpful before/during/after. They generously provided our airport transfers even though they were on totally different days. Lunch at a local restaurant was fantastic & we enjoyed having fresh coconut water as a treat. Wanderlust Adventures GY really makes you feel at home & helps you make the most of your time in Guyana. • Jet14250203980 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed I was really excited to go on this island tour, but I was disappointed. I have been on island tours before, and they were enjoyable, relaxed, and efficient. On this tour, we spent 4+ hours on the bus just getting to and from the departure port. Once we got to the boat, we were crammed on, with hardly any personal space. The boat was awkward to board - it was rows of seats that went all the way across, and you had to hurdle them to get to your spot. I think the biggest disappointment was the amount of time we spent at each island. Some stops were less than 20 minutes. We had enough time to order a drink, but no time to sit and enjoy it. Most of the time was spent on the boat. On other tours, we've enjoyed time to walk around and explore. Read more Written March 11, 2024

Our flight was slightly delayed but at no fault of the tour company, safety came first with the weather being checked before departure. When we reached to Kaieteur after a great flight with wonderful views, our guide Triscilla ensured that we were well taken care of, we stopped at different points and enjoyed the views of mother nature, food and refreshments were available. We took another small flight to Orinduik where we enjoyed the waterfall and took a dip before taking the flight back to Georgetown. Great experience and I would highly recommend. Personally, we love learning about history and this tour was so informative about the historical significance of Linden. Be sure to walk with a hat and/or umbrella to hike up the cliffs to view the blue lake. I think coordinating some swimming at the blue lakes would be nice to cool down after the hike and enhance the overall experience. Odessa and Triscilla did a wonderful job! Starting with, the flight to the Kaieteur National park reveals some spectacular arial views of the countries beauty. The flight path was above the city of Georgetown and so it was exciting to see familiar landmarks from this perspective. As the flight progressed future into the interior you being to see how the landscape changes from flatlands to mountains as we approach the falls. Once arriving at the Kaieteur National Park we were greeted and provided refreshments and enough time to have a meal and prepare for the hike to the 3 viewings of the falls. The light meal prior to our hike was exactly what was needed to inject a little energy after the flight to the Kaieteur National Park. Even though it rained while on the tour (After all can’t complain about rain if you’re in the rainforest. That said, pack a poncho just in case rain is in the forecast) the tour guide kept up spirits and made the experience very enjoyable and shared some insightful bits of knowledge about the Natural History of the Guyana Shield. Highly recommend this tour for those looking explore Guyana’s natures beauty. Read more Written April 19, 2023

The Experience

  • Photo Gallery

Your tour starts with a scenic  half hour drive from Georgetown passing by  many coastal villages such as  Victoria , the first village purchased by the freed slaves over 175 years ago.

IMG_0066

Unity Village

Arriving  at Unity Village, located at the mouth of the Mahaica river  you board a boat captained by one of the many local fishermen whose  interesting tales are as enjoyable as the many  birding opportunities.

The boat journey takes you up the serene Mahaica river, bordered on either side by intact mangrove forests, home to crabs, racoons, monkeys and over one hundred and fifty species of birds.  Most sighted species includes the Gray-breasted Crakes, Rufous Crab-Hawks,Silvered Antbirds,Black-capped Donacobius, Wing-barred Seedeater, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Moriche Oriole, Rufous Crab-Hawk, Black Hawk-Eagle, Boat-billed Heron, Pied Water-Tyrant, Tropical Kingbird, Silver-backed Antbird, Green-rumped Parrotlet and Great Black-Hawk to name  a few.

The Mahaica Cast Iron Bridge

The Mahaica Cast Iron Bridge

The boat passes under the one hundred and fifty  year old  Mahaica cast iron bridge now retired but which  at that time allowed South America’s first railway service to cross the  river playing  an invaluable role in the development of the coastal economy during colonial times. This service transported passengers, pigs and poultry to the capital city of Georgetown.

The tour’s iconic specie are the hoatzin, Guyana’s national bird which is known locally as the Canje Pheasant. They are extremely social and live in groups of forty making theirs pinning and curtseying antics on the branches of the mangrove trees  a sight to behold. Supposedly linked to the first known bird, the prehistoric Archaeoppteryx, their elongated neck, tiny head with  blood red eyes ringed by blue skin and long tail feathers inspired one travel writer to aptly describe them as seemingly  designed by Dr. Suess. The second iconic specie are the blood colored woodpeckers which is

The Canje Pheasant

The Canje Pheasant (Hoatzin)

restricted to the narrow coastal plan and is considered a Guiana Shield endemic.

As wild manatees call this river home you may be given an extra treat  to an unscheduled surfacing  from beneath the coco cola colored waters.

The boat continues to the halfway point known as “Mango Landing”  due to the  prolific bearing mango tree also doubling up as our tie up spot. During mango season the captain drives the boat under the overhanging branches giving those fortunate visitors the treat to pick their own ripe mangoes. As the landing is on the perimeter  of a rice field you can take a short walking tour through the fields to learn about the rice industry.

Market day is on Saturdays so if your tour is on this day a stop is made so you can take in the culture and purchase fresh fruits or just enjoy a chat with the delightful local vendors.

A “tassa drumming” cultural presentation can be booked as an extra event at the end of the river journey. A stop by Ingrids Creole foodstand to enjoy a cold Demerara Gold cane juice and local fare is optional on the return to Georgetown.
