Janet Jackson kicked off her highly anticipated Together Again tour this weekend in Florida with an epic, 40-plus-song set list and a guest appearance from “Today” co-host Sheinelle Jones .

The revered performer opened her tour Friday at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla., where she sang a number of classic hits including “Control,” “Nasty,” “All for You,” “Scream” and “Rhythm Nation,” according to NME .

She also performed a few songs — such as “Damita Jo,” “Enjoy,” “Girlfriend/Boyfriend,” “Like You Don’t Love Me” and “Do It 2 Me” — live for the first time, NME reported. The show, which features music from her 1993 “Janet” and 1997 “Velvet Rope” albums as well as several other songs from her back catalog, consists of six acts.

‘Sheinelle, don’t get weird’: Janet Jackson bonds with a ‘Today’ host superfan

When Janet Jackson showed up Friday on ‘Today,’ she likely didn’t expect the outpouring of admiration that came from superfan host Sheinelle Jones.

Dec. 16, 2022

During Jackson’s encore performance of “Together Again,”Jones joined her onstage. The “That’s the Way Love Goes” artist extended an invitation for the broadcast journalist to be one of her backup dancers for the day after Jones channeled Jackson for the 2019 Halloween episode of NBC’s “Today” show.

“I would love for you to join me,” Jackson told Jones a few months ago while promoting her tour on the morning program. “You should.”

Fast-forward to this weekend, when Jackson gave Jones a backstage tour and a rare interview reflecting on her life, career and upcoming documentary, which will include footage from the Together Again tour.

“Maybe it’s because I’m not as shy as I used to be,” Jackson said of her decision to document this phase of her journey. “I’m a little bit more open to sharing more in my life than I ever did before.”

The Hollywood Bowl will reopen for a 2021 season after an unprecedented year-long closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Hollywood Bowl 2023 lineup includes Janet Jackson, Culture Club and movies galore

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season lineup on Tuesday, including opening night with Janet Jackson, a Beach Boys fireworks spectacular, a 90th birthday tribute to Quincy Jones and more.

Feb. 7, 2023

After practicing for hours with Jackson’s backup dancers and alone in her hotel room, Jones performed a short routine to the tune of “Together Again” alongside her idol at the Hard Rock Live.

“Last night I kept trying to find the place between being out of my body and trying to stay in my body and actually get on that stage,” Jones said Monday on “Today.”

“When I was in high school, I had pictures of news anchors on one wall, and then I had pictures of Janet Jackson on another ... and when I was in seventh grade, I would make up dances to Janet. And so to be on that stage last night, it was ... surreal.”

Jackson’s Together Again tour encompasses more than 30 cities across the United States and Canada, including five stops in California. The veteran musician is scheduled to come to Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, Highland and Mountain View in June.

On June 10, Jackson will headline opening night of the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season with support from Ludacris and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s youth orchestra.

Janet Jackson is bold, fierce as she delivers the hits: Best moments of 'Together Again' tour

janet jackson tour songs

BRISTOW, Va. – All Janet Jackson needs to do is look fierce and snap “gimme a beat,” and everything falls into place.

At the 13 th of the 37 shows of her Together Again tour , Jackson maintained her hallmark precision throughout a nearly two-hour reminiscence of her 40-year career. It is a production choreographed by every definition, with five acts and an encore, 34 songs – though many are carved into medleys – and casual-cool fashion statements.

The 20,000-plus packing every inch of Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater in Northern Virginia on Saturday didn’t seem fazed by the bass-heavy mix that rendered some vocals inaudible. They just wanted to marvel at Jackson, who turns 57 on May 16, as she slithered her hips, squared her shoulders and invited the audience to head-bob along with her.

Here are some highlights from Jackson’s first tour in four years.

Janet Jackson packs the smashes into Act 2

Against a stark white backdrop with swirled black accents, Jackson and her dance troupe rolls through hits from Jackson’s first No. 1 pop album, 1986’s Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis-produced “Control.”

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The tour version of “What Have You Done For Me Lately?” offers an incessant bass line that pumps with shades of Madonna’s “Vogue.” Jackson’s dancers reproduce some of the most memorable moves from the song’s video (the backward hand wave still sends a message), while she saves her toughest moves – taut elbow snaps and rapid knee knocks – for “Nasty.”

Though Jackson doesn't talk much throughout the show, she reminds the crowd that “When I Think Of You,” performed with flirty cutesiness, was her first No. 1 hit.

In her black pants and white top with symmetrical black stripes, Jackson grins as she uses a chair as a dance prop during “Control,” which drips with finger-snapping sass.

The second half of Act 2 is dedicated to Jackson’s balladry, and she finally takes a breather and sits while she sings. Her voice – which isn’t often heard too robustly during the show – is light and pretty during “Again.” After holding a long note toward the end of the ballad, Jackson tears up, putting her hand over her eyes as she tries to finish the song. Her emotion seems prompted by her ability to hit the challenging note and the crowd’s rapturous response.

Janet Jackson is performing rarely played songs on tour

The first hint that Jackson’s show is going to span far beyond her dozens of hits comes with the strains of music heard on stage – “Damita Jo,” the title track of her 2004 album that isn’t heralded as often as her MTV-era work.

During Act 3, Jackson mentions that one of the joys of her live performances is the ability to “play songs that I haven’t played on tour before.”

Fans didn’t seem to expect an appearance from “Throb,” a track from her 1993 eponymous album, or a medley that included “Girlfriend/Boyfriend” – Jackson’s 1999 collaboration with Blackstreet – and “Do It 2 Me,” from 2006’s “20 Y.O.” release.

The hip-hop dance track “So Excited,” also from “20 Y.O.” was mostly ignored on radio upon its release but found a home in the clubs. The crowd’s reaction indicates that many fans were hardly unfamiliar with it.

Janet Jackson makes several fashion statements

For her opening act, Jackson opts for a regal look of a gold body suit accented with a purple sash to match her backup dancers. Of course, she wears her patented headset throughout the night and also dons a lengthy high ponytail that bounces with her every step.

When Jackson gets rolling in Act 3 with a fizzy rendition of “All For You,” she bops around the stage, all writhing hips and shuffling feet, in a hot pink jumpsuit accented with green plaid.

And by the Act 4 hit parade that includes “Miss You Much” and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," Jackson comes down from a raised platform sporting a black hooded cape and a black shirt emblazoned with Rhythm Nation – fitting, since, of course, this is the segment that wraps with “Rhythm Nation,” her sharp-edged social commentary from 1989’s “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814,” her most formidable album.

Concert Review – JANET JACKSON: Together Again Tour

janet jackson tour songs

This past Tuesday night, June 4th, I had the pleasure of seeing the living legend that is Janet Jackson live in concert for the very first time. I’ve been a long-time fan of hers since early 1986, when I fell in love with her break out hit “What Have You Done For Me Lately”, but have never seen one of her shows until now. I saw her at Acrisure Arena, the same Coachella Valley venue where I saw the Eagles, Tears for Fears and Stevie Nicks last year. This show kicked off the second leg of her North American Together Again Tour , which includes 35 shows that will conclude July 30th in Phoenix. Named after Jackson’s 1997 hit “Together Again”, the tour is a sequel to her highly successful 2023 tour of the same name. She’ll be following with a run of shows in Europe later in the year.

Over a storied career spanning more than 40 years, Jackson has released eleven albums, seven of which have reached number one, and 70 singles, ten of which have gone to number one, with another 16 reaching the top 10. She has sold over 180 million records and won a plethora of awards, including five Grammy Awards, eleven American Music Awards, ten MTV Video Music Awards, and eleven Billboard Music Awards.

Opening for her on this tour is American rapper, singer-songwriter and actor Nelly (born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. in Austin, Texas, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri). Now 49, Nelly’s had quite a successful career in his own right, garnering three number one albums and four number one singles during the period of his greatest success between 2000 and 2005. He’s won numerous accolades throughout his career, including three Grammy Awards and nine Billboard Music Awards.

Nelly appeared on stage promptly at 8:00 pm, accompanied by DJ Trife, his half-brother City Spud and four female backup dancers. He wasted no time getting the crowd worked up with his engaging, high-energy stage presence, performing many of his biggest hits, including “Ride Wit Me”, “Country Grammar”, “E.I”, “Dilemma”, and “Hot In Herre”. Between songs, Nelly repeatedly expressed his love and appreciation for his fans, graciously thanking us for following and supporting him over the past 25 years. He closed his 40-minute, eight song set with a rousing performance of fan favorite “Hot In Herre”.

After a 20-minute break, four male dancers in stylish gray suits appeared on stage in front of a huge cylindrical curtain that slowly lifted, revealing Jackson on a raised platform wearing an oversized satin coat resembling a ball gown, as the audience roared with glee. Accompanied by her sexy dancers, she shed the coat and launched into a medley of eight songs starting with “Night” from her 2015 album Unbreakable , followed with a live debut of “2nite” from her 2008 album Discipline . She was backed by a live band who faithfully recreated the superb instrumentation of her many songs. My only complaint, and it’s a minor one, is that the loud, bass-heavy music occasionally overpowered her vocals.

At 58, Jackson looks and sounds as good as ever, effortlessly moving about the stage like someone half her age. The medley of her first set of songs, some of which I did not recognize, ran together in rapid succession until she finally slowed things down with her sultry 1993 hit “That’s the Way Love Goes”. She followed with an electrifying performance of one of my personal favorites “Love Will Never Do (Without You)”, from her massively successful 1989 album Rhythm Nation 1814 .

The elaborate sets and creative lighting effects were outstanding, featuring a dramatic array of brightly-colored laser beams that shone across the arena throughout her show.

Halfway through her set, Jackson reappeared in a new costume (she wore a total of four different ones) and sat on a stool in the middle of the stage under a large purplish globe, whereupon she sang a medley of her softer ballads “Take Care”, “Let’s Wait Awhile”, “Again” and “Any Time, Any Place”. She then launched into a medley of some of her most upbeat songs, including “Make Me”, “All For You”, “Alright”, “Escapade” and “Miss You Much”. “Escapade”, from Rhythm Nation 1814 , is my all-time favorite song by Jackson, and I’d hoped she would sing in its entirety, however, she truncated the song in the medley, which she followed with “Miss You Much”, another smash hit from the same album. Nevertheless, an enjoyable performance of both songs (notwithstanding a nearby woman loudly singing along).

She continued delivering hit after hit, ending her set with an electrifying performance of one of her signature songs “Rhythm Nation”. Sorry about the person’s hand holding a mobile phone suddenly dominating the video at the end!

At the end of that song’s performance, Jackson profusely thanked the crowd for coming to her show, and she and her dancers left the stage as the lights faded. The audience responded with uproarious cheers and applause, repeatedly shouting for an encore. Jackson and company complied, returning to perform her 2001 hit “Someone To Call My Lover” (which samples the guitar riff from America’s song “Ventura Highway”) and closing with “Together Again”. In all, she sang all or part of 41 songs in a performance lasting one hour and 45 minutes. My husband and I – as well as all other 11,000-plus fans – enjoyed every minute of it!

Wow! What a setlist!

Like Liked by 1 person

Yes, quite a long one, though many were abbreviated versions included in medleys.

That is a great review, pictures and videos. Im very much a casual fan but respect her enormous talent. Well done and great you got a chance to see her.

Thanks Randy. This one took me a while to get done.

I can sort of imagine, if I could write like that – like never!

You’re a terrific writer, so don’t sell yourself short.

You’re too kind Jeff. But you are very much in the moment, its a rare skill.

i am happy for you that you got to see her, and that setlist is huge, even if some songs were short or medleys.

Thanks Cathy. I was so glad she did a show at a venue near me. It’s often an ordeal to make the 2-3 hour drive to L.A. to see a concert.

How cool to get to see one of the best performers and talent of all time! Looks like it was a great show and thanks for sharing the experience with us including some great videos! I am sure you both loved every moment of it except maybe the woman singing along with Janet!

Plus she looks great and has great moves!

Thanks Jeff!

Thanks for reading and commenting Chuck!

Of course! That had to be to be an incredible experience! Glad you got to go!

Yes it was!

Sounds like she still got it. What a formidabble setlist! Great review Jeff.

Thanks Robert. She surely does.

It sounds like you really dig Janet Jackson, so I’m glad you got to see her. Evidently, she’s still in admirable shape.

Except for the occasional song on the radio, I never really listened to her. While I assume I might recognize a couple of her songs, I can’t name any. A 41-song setlist is really impressive. I guess it must have been a decent-length show.

Your videos came out really well. Once I start filming, I rarely zoom in or out since I’m always concerned my phone camera will go out of focus. That said, I have a pretty basic smartphone with only one camera lens. I suppose more advanced technology would make zooming in and out less risky. 🙂

That must have been one amazing show. Just a tad jealous, but I’ll get over it!

It was a blast. She’s playing in Anaheim tonight, so you still have time to see her!

I’m not a fan but I’m glad you are and got a chance to see her at a convenient location! 1:45 minutes is a lot of time for a concert. She surely gave it her all.

Yes she did!

To be honest, Janet Jackson show feels a lot like Michael’s.I commend her overall resistance to Hip Hop craze.

Well, Janet & Michael are from the same musical DNA.

I saw she does drive a nicer car than Michael did.

Not usually my thing but the one song I always liked by her is Together Again. I still can’t believe this is Penny off of Good Times. Jeff so you know…I won’t be on the blogs during the week except weekends until around 3 weeks…work related. That is why I’m behind!

About Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is one of the most influential entertainers of the modern era. Her music has won her 5 GRAMMY® Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, a nomination for an Academy Award along with dozens of American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards. She has received accolades as an actress as well including the NAACP Best Supporting Actor award. Janet is a published author, dancer, businessperson, philanthropist and one of biggest-selling artists in popular music history. With sales of over 180 million records worldwide, Janet Jackson stands as one of the best-selling artists of all time with a string of hits that have left an indelible impression on pop culture. She is the record holder for the biggest selling debut tour in history and is the first woman to debut in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 charts. She also stands as one of only four artists to have a #1 album for four successive decades alongside Barbra Streisand, Bruce Springsteen and U2. Even today she continues to make an undeniable impact. In 2018, her last single, “Made for Now” with Daddy Yankee, released by her own Rhythm Nation Records, hit #1 on the Dance Clubs Songs chart making it her 20th single on the chart in the span of her career. In 2019, she was inducted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside her brothers and in that same year her critically acclaimed Las Vegas residency, “Metamorphosis” closed out to record breaking ticket sales with only 18 dates at the Park MGM's Park Theater. As reported by Billboard Boxscore, the legendary singer, dancer, songwriter, producer, and actress is among the biggest Vegas performers of this decade, ahead of Celine Dion (2011), Britney Spears (2013) and the Backstreet Boys (2017). Her critically acclaimed and award-winning documentary “Janet Jackson.” brought in over 20 million viewers in one week.

On February 4, 2021, Janet Jackson’s iconic mega platinum-selling third album Control turned 35. The album also returned to the top of the charts, hitting #1 on the Apple Top 40 US Pop Album chart. Led by five chart-busting hit singles — “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “Control,” “When I Think Of You,” —with their complementary, tightly choreographed music videos — and “Let’s Wait Awhile,” Control became Jackson’s first No. 1 Pop album. The album also made Billboard chart history for having the longest continuous run on the Hot 100 with singles from one album, ultimately tallying a remarkable 65 consecutive weeks from that perch. To date, Control has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

About Nelly

A savvy rapper with crossover appeal, Nelly seemed like a novelty when he debuted with the Top Ten pop hit 'Country Grammar (Hot...)' in 2000, but he quickly proved to be a legitimate hitmaker with 'Hot in Herre,' 'Dilemma,' and 'Shake Ya Tailfeather'—and those three only account for a fraction of his Hot 100-topping and Grammy-winning hits. These feats built the foundation of a career that boasts six consecutive Top Ten albums, from the diamond 'Country Grammar' (2000) to the platinum '5.0' (2010) and 'The Fix' (2015), leading to warmly received collaborations in the 2020s. Amidst his recent studio recording sessions, Nelly is actively promoting his freshly introduced moonshine brand, "MoShine," preparing some huge entrepreneurial announcements and unveiling his latest philanthropic initiative, 314 Education.

Review: Janet Jackson brings her Black girl magic to St. Paul

T he story is well known. She was a TV actress trying to make it in music, like her older brothers had done. She wasn't proud of her first two albums of bubblegum pop/R&B. She felt the need to break free from her domineering father/manager and make her own artistic choices.

So, 39 years ago, Janet Jackson took a leap. She left Los Angeles and went to Minneapolis, to a small recording studio in an anonymous brick building on Nicollet Avenue South to work with rising R&B producer/songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

They created the "Control" album, and Jackson took control of a career that eventually led to 10 No. 1 pop hits, 16 No. 1 R&B smashes, 20 No. 1 dance songs, five Grammys and, ultimately, a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Black girl magic to the nines!

Jackson returned to the Twin Cities on Tuesday, bringing her Together Again Tour again to Xcel Energy Center, a mere 55 weeks after her last appearance in St. Paul. She delivered the hits, remixes, deep tracks, bass-heavy bangers and cuddly ballads. Once again, she cut down on choreography, a hallmark of her career, limiting it to four male backup dancers instead of the phalanx of athletic dancers who accompanied her in arresting videos and captivating concerts.

But this time the 1¾-hour show seemed less rushed, less choppy, more emotional and, ultimately, more satisfying.

Jackson — 58 and some 23 years past her last No. 1 hit — once again used movements that were smaller, less athletic and less aggressive than classic Janet, however, they were more articulate than last year. She seemed more comfortable and confident. She again relied on upper body and arm movements, but it felt like more leg action, which was sometimes exaggerated by her baggy pants.

Like last year, the show was presented in four acts, which meant four outfits — and completely new ones from a year ago. A shimmering sequined black pant suit, a rhinestone-covered plaid ensemble, a white gauzy getup and a black vinyl trenchcoat over a white shirt, black necktie and wide-legged capri pants. And a new hairdo: long black braids.

In some ways, Jackson's show was reminiscent of Madonna's current Celebration Tour, which also curtailed the choreography from an icon famous for bravura dancing. But like Madonna's self-referential retrospective show, Jackson's Together Again Tour gives us an opportunity to reflect on her contributions.

Though Jackson has a small, almost girlish voice (that wasn't always given a favorable sound mix on Tuesday), she spoke volumes. She's an artist of many musical personas, including hopeless romantic, seductive vixen, steadfast feminist and bold activist, accompanied by irresistible synth rhythms and melodies crafted by Jam and Lewis.

On Tuesday, Jackson sounded hopelessly romantic on "Miss You Much" and the dreamy "When I Think of You." How seductive were "If" and the breezy "All for You"? Are there any more potent R&B feminist anthems than "Control" and the growling "Nasty"? "The Knowledge" and the transfixing "Rhythm Nation" — both high points of Tuesday's concert — rank among the sharpest social commentary songs of the last part of the 20th century.

Those last two numbers were part of the fiery fourth act, which also included a forceful treatment of "If" and a pulverizing rendition of "Scream," her duet with her brother, Michael Jackson via video, that showcased her most emphatic vocals and dancing. She got so revved up in Act 4 that her voice sounded hoarse by the closing "Rhythm Nation."

Earlier, Jackson got quite emotional during "Again." She asked the 10,000 fans to do the singing, and they were so enthusiastic and musical that she broke into in tears of joy and acknowledged how much Minneapolis means to her, pounding her hand to her heart.

As comfortable as she is in the Twin Cities, Jackson never mentioned Jam and Lewis, who moved to L.A. 20 years ago but still visit Minneapolis often. As the Twin Cities are caught up in a flurry of celebrations for Prince and the 40th anniversary of "Purple Rain," Jackson's concert was a good reminder that the Minneapolis Sound was more than just the Purple One.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: janet jackson got lost in the sound and fury at the x, as usual, the 58-year-old crammed the show full of shortened hits.

Janet Jackson performing with dancers

It turned out to be an apt metaphor for her enthusiastic, if underwhelming, performance that echoed the 58-year-old’s three most recent local shows in the time since she returned to large-scale touring in 2015.

Her live band, tucked away in the shadows at the back of the stage, often overpowered Jackson, who also leaned heavily into the prerecorded backing vocals. And, once again, she crammed as many songs into her 110 minute show as she could, even if that meant cutting down some of her most-loved songs to a mere verse and chorus.

Jackson did switch up the set list from her previous show at the X, which happened just 13 months ago. Split into four “acts” and a finale, with downtime between each to facilitate Jackson’s costume changes, the show bumped her biggest hits up against relatively obscure album cuts, many drawn from her post-Super Bowl halftime show years when the music industry pretty much abandoned her.

Janet Jackson in a long white cape

(I, for one, was hoping — hoping, but not expecting — to hear Jackson throw some shade in Justin Timberlake’s direction following his early morning arrest Tuesday on DWI charges in the Hamptons. Alas, she chose grace, something Timberlake most certainly did not in the years since he tossed her under the bus after her infamous “wardrobe malfunction.”)

Jackson opened the first act with “Night,” from her most recent album, 2015’s “Unbreakable.” From there, she dived deep into her catalog for a series of upbeat, sometimes indecipherable, songs delivered as a lengthy medley. It wasn’t until her a cappella intro to “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” that the crowd got their first clear taste of Jackson’s breathy vocals.

Flanked by her muscular dancers, who wore dress shirts with the arms ripped off and plaid skirts, Jackson revisited a trio of her earliest hits during the second act: “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty” and “The Pleasure Principle.”

The concert was nearly half over when Jackson shifted into slow jam mode, kicking off a run of songs with 2006’s ode to, uh, self-pleasure “Take Care” followed, funnily enough, by her 1987 ode to chastity “Let’s Wait Awhile.” She let the audience sing the bulk of “Again” and then broke into tears and announced “I love you so much,” a popular refrain from Jackson the few times she did speak to the crowd.

Well into her second hour, Jackson unleashed her full voice for “Alright,” “Escapade” and “Miss You Much” and did the same near the end during “Scream” (accompanied by her late brother Michael’s recorded vocals) and a particularly fiery and noisy “Rhythm Nation.” It would have been great to hear more of that throughout the show.

Warren G Details Tense Confrontation With Stranger in Vancouver Who 'Basically Banged on Me'

The Long Beach rapper is in Vancouver for his Cali to Canada Tour with Snoop Dogg and DJ Quik.

Warren G ran into some trouble while on his Cali to Canada Tour.

The Long Beach native took to Instagram over the weekend to share an uneasy confrontation he had with a stranger in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“I’m out here, it’s a trip. Outside in the streets of Vancouver, it’s pretty rough around here. Everywhere ain’t peaches and cream. You know, being from the States, we think that there ain’t places that are rough, but it’s rough everywhere,” he said.

“It’s drugs everywhere, gang shit everywhere. I was just down the street, a muthafucka damn near basically banged on me.”

He then described how he didn’t let the stranger intimidate him and he stood his ground. “I told him, ‘I ain’t from out here, muthafucka. You got me fucked up.’ He fixed it fast. He realized I wasn’t from out here,” Warren explained.

“I had to check him real quick, but hey, it’s all good. I ain’t about that, but I ain’t gonna let a muthafucka try to mash on me at the same time.”

The Cali to Canada Tour took him, Snoop Dogg , and DJ Quik up to Vancouver, as well as Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Calgary. The trio kicked off their venture on June 3 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with it concluding on June 25 in Vancouver.
