Cruise Wear for Women Over 50: What to Pack
One of my very favorite ways to see the world is via a cruise. I know many AWSL readers share my love for cruising because I’m often asked for ideas of what to pack for a cruise. I’ve learned several new packing tricks since I have a few more cruises under my belt, so let’s get to it.
If you have an upcoming cruise on your travel calendar, I hope you find this guide helpful! Here are a few more posts you might like:

What to Pack for a Cruise
What to pack for a cruise is, unfortunately, not a one-size-fits-all answer. For example…I’m packing very different items for my upcoming adventure cruise to see the polar bears than I did to cruise the Baltics. The items and the amount of items you’ll need to bring heavily rely on several different factors.
The first thing I look at when I start planning what to bring is the destination and the season. It’s common sense that if you’re boarding a ship that takes you to somewhere sunny and tropical, you’ll need different items than if you were heading to somewhere in a colder or rainier climate. Take a look at the cities and ports you’ll be stopping at, as well as any excursions you choose to participate in.
I also look at the length of the trip, as I’ve taken cruises that last anywhere from three days to three weeks. I seldom check bags when I fly, so I pack versatile pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. I bring fewer items than most do because I wear things several times in different ways, allowing me to piece together outfits that can work for both onboard fun and exploring at ports. For those longer adventures, especially ones stretching past two weeks, you’ll need to get more strategic and pack a bigger variety of clothes.
Understanding the ship’s dress code and level of formality is essential when packing for a cruise. It ensures that you’re appropriately dressed for all onboard activities and events, from formal dinners to poolside lounging. For cruises like luxury liners or those with formal dinners, passengers are expected to dress accordingly, often requiring something formal. In contrast, cruises with a more relaxed atmosphere may have less stringent dress codes, allowing for casual or resort wear throughout the voyage.
My Guide to Packing for a Cruise
Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or embarking on your maiden voyage, getting your packing list just right can make all the difference in your onboard experience. From navigating the seas to exploring ports, having the proper pieces packed ensures you’re prepared for every adventure that awaits.
Choose a Color Scheme and Proper Fabrics
When it comes to packing for a cruise, sticking to a color scheme can streamline your wardrobe and make outfit planning a breeze. A smart strategy is to choose two main colors for your garments, allowing for easy mixing and matching throughout your journey. Opting for solid colors over bold patterns or vibrant prints not only creates a cohesive look but also ensures versatility in your outfits. Solid hues such as navy, black, white, or khaki serve as excellent base colors, providing a timeless and elegant foundation for your cruise wardrobe.
By keeping your garments primarily in two main colors, you create a harmonious palette that minimizes decision-making and maximizes outfit options. A simple yet stylish capsule wardrobe composed of interchangeable pieces enables effortless coordination, whether you’re lounging by the pool, dining in the evening, or exploring ashore. Additionally, solid colors tend to be less memorable than busy patterns, allowing you to re-wear items without drawing attention to repetition.
Knit fabrics, such as jersey or cotton blends, are ideal due to their stretchiness and wrinkle-resistant properties, making them perfect for long days of exploring or lounging on deck. Crushable fabrics like linen or lightweight cotton are also excellent choices as they pack easily and can withstand the rigors of travel, ensuring you arrive at your destination looking fresh and put-together. These materials not only offer breathability in warm climates but also provide easy care, allowing you to focus more on enjoying your cruise adventure and less on ironing out wrinkles.
My Personal Cruise Packing List
Here is my personal packing list, which includes clothing essentials and must-have accessories.
- 3-4 bottoms, skirts, or pants: My favorites? I haven’t traveled or packed a suitcase for over fifteen years that hasn’t included two or more pairs of these washable crepe, slim-knit ankle pants.
- 1-2 casual to dressy dresses: The right change of shoes, bag, and jewelry can easily transform a dress from daytime to nighttime wear.
- A wrap . I also find light cashmere ones like this one invaluable to have in my carry-on bag for flights.
- Lightweight jacket : A knit jacket or blazer polishes many looks. You can pop one over Bermuda shorts during the day or a dress at night.
- Several scarves of varying size and weight: I wear scarves more often when I travel because they help me switch up the look of basics, protect my hair from getting trashed on a windy bus ride, and cover my neck when the sun feels too strong.
- Comfortable walking shoes : These are critical because you’re going to do a lot of walking!
- Dressy flats or small heels (optional)
- Swimsuit : Even though I don’t sunbathe, I don’t swim, and I don’t use public hot tubs, I always bring a couple of bathing suits. You can see more of my favorites here.
- A tote : You’ll want one for shore excursions or trips to the pool aboard the ship. Perfect for holding souvenirs, sunscreen, a small umbrella, etc.
- Small bag: This bag is invaluable. It switches from a crossbody to a belt bag to a clutch with a quick change of straps.
- Sun hat : A stylish way to shield your skin from the sun. You can see more of my favorite sun hats here in this post.
- Sunglasses : I always bring at least one extra pair of prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses. Obviously, they couldn’t be replaced on a cruise and my trip would be ruined if I’d only brought one pair and they broke or were lost. I always opt for polarized sunglasses to cut down on glare and squinting.
- Costume Jewelry: Having a variety of necklaces, earrings, and scarves helps to add variety to a capsule wardrobe. I always pack nice costume pieces on cruises because I would be devastated if they were stolen or if I were to lose them.
- Toiletries: You can view my toiletry packing list here.
- Sunscreen is a constant for me, and I like to bring favorites I know will perform well and be ultra-protective. You can see some of my favorites here .
What to Wear for Excursions
Obviously, this will depend on your cruise destination, but I typically find that excursions call for comfort. Flat shoes, a travel purse or tote, and sunnies are part of my everyday wear for a cruise.

This is great, thank you! I’ve done two recent polar expedition cruises. It is indeed a very different packing list. Mine were both on Quark and were largely very casual. My key recommendations are wool leggings, socks, and tops, plus a good pair of goretex pants if you are on an expedition cruise.
Thanks Jamie. I have them on order.
Yes ! Heading to Amsterdam and then Belgium in May…always try to pack light but do check a bag. Have three more cruises booked, so thanks for the tips. I do basic colors and mix and match. Now in the market for some nice stretch, comfy pants for the flight and tours!
I highly recommend the Eileen Fisher and Athleta stretch pants. Both are very comfy and don’t wrinkle.
I second the Athleta Endless pant! Perfect for travel, super comfy yet polished, with two zipped pockets in front.
Yes!! So nice for travel or any day.
Great cruise packing ideas. We started with carryon bags after Covid. Yes, it can be done! We were quite surprised. Question: is the backdrop in one of the photos above from Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic? Absolutely loved that little town. We stopped there on our Passau to Budapest river cruise.
Yes it is! This was the last time I wore my favorite scarf because I lost it that day. Great little town.
We’re spending 10 days in the Netherlands followed by a cruise around Iceland, with three stops in Scotland on the way back. We have always taken only carry-ons on our European trips, but are planning on one checked piece this trip in order to pack warmer clothes like down jackets. I’ll be curious to see what you take on your Arctic cruise. Do you think you’ll manage with carry-ons?
Your trip sounds awesome!! They’ll be providing the heavy parka and boots so I might be able to. We’re traveling over without airline changes so that makes it more reassuring a checked bag will arrive. I’ll let you know.
Holland America has wonderful laundry service, allowing you to pack less.. It’s free for us because we are almost 5 star, but the $25 “all you can stuff in the bag” special is the best deal around. Roll your items very tightly and cram in. Stuff undies and socks into the corners. Fill out the laundry sheet and tuck a $5 into it. Your laundry will come back next day (sometimes that day!) perfectly cleaned and pressed and on hangers or folded -along with a note from the person who did it. Be sure to leave an ”attaboy” comment on the Navigator app. Workers earn extra time off and other benefits when they get praised by guests.
Thank you for letting us know Laurie! That’s terrific.
We are cruising to Bermuda out of NYC this year. I really enjoy cruising and find it to be a relaxing vacation. However, I do usually check a bag as well as having my lightweight carryon for essentials.
Bermuda is so beautiful. We haven’t been back in many years. Have a great trip. I love cruising too. It’s much more relaxing for me.
Great info Jennifer, especially the need for more than one pair of prescription glasses. I forgot once and a monkey took them on my face and all I had left was my prescription sunglasses. I would have been left looking like Jackie O, for a month long cruise. Luckily got them back mangled but wearable, so absolutely necessary to pack an extra pair. I never travel without an extra pair of everyday glasses and of course sunglasses!
Wow! But how cool to be that close to a monkey. It sounds like a fun adventure.
I like your advice about extra glasses. A few years ago, we were in a remote part of the Czech Republic. I had my sunglasses on and had my glasses hanging from my top. I bent over and somehow my glasses dropped and I stepped on them. I had a pair of readers with me, too. This was early in the trip and it was a real pain to have to rely on either readers or glasses that no longer were wearable for a lot of days.
I really couldn’t survive with just cheaters. I actually bring two extra pairs of progressives. One rimless pair that I keep in the cabin. They’re small and easy to pack.
These are all great tips for cruising. I’ve only been on warm cruises and I felt I packed pretty well. We had two formal nights and the rest were just casual. Mix and matching outfits helps.
Mixing and matching is the way to go Rosemary.
I don’t see a link for the light blue shawl type wrap that you’re wearing over the long black dress in the top photo. I love it. Where did you get both pieces?
The skirt is 25+ years old and the wrap is a very old piece from Eileen Fisher. She makes very pretty wraps.
Great Post. Can you give some examples of packable dresses that would work for a more “formal” night on a cruise.
Choose knits or soft woven fabrics like rayon that don’t wrinkle. I prefer a dark neutral without prints that you can dress up with accessories. This allows you to wear it several times and make it look different.
I’m a pants girl. One pair of black silky crops, three tops (one black, one white and one glitzy). Same black flats as every night but add a clip-on bow or bling for dressy. Glitzy necklaces and boom! Done!
I love that idea. Great combos Laurie.
I cruise twice a year and always take a basic black midi dress with batwing sleeves and a v neck by Norma Kamala ( classic style. Will last 20 years lol) Sometimes I wear it with a wrap. Other times jewelry or a long chiffon short sleeved scarf. On occasion I’ve even worn it as a top with leggings or with a jacket and boots. Fabulous investment piece.
It does sound like a fabulous piece!
We are doing the Alaska cruise in May, first time. All other cruises were Caribbean so my cruise wear will be very different.
We’ve always wanted to do that Alaska cruise. Maybe next year!
I don’t know if all ships are the same but formal night on our Alaska cruise had men in tuxedo and women in long elegant gowns. Very formal! There was even a photographer taking pictures of all the beautiful couples. I had bought a pair of palazzo pants and and a beautiful flowy top, both in black as I had an injury and had to wear flats. I added gold jewellery to up the up the elegance. My husband wore a dark grey suit. I felt terribly underdressed once I saw all the gorgeous gowns. Prepare for rainy days and chilly ones so layers are important. Enjoy your Alaska cruise!
Great advice! Palazzo pants are perfect for cruising.
I love to wear formal attire, so I’m curious as to what cruise line you were on. We cruise on Regent Seven Seas, but the dress code is becoming increasingly more casual, which is disappointing to me.
We’re doing our first Alaska cruise in June. Black velvet jeans will be my go-to for regular dinners. Same black silky crops for dressy.
I love that outfit idea!! Brilliant idea.
Me too. Leave May 4th.

Cruise Outfits Over 50: Elegant And Comfortable Attire
Packing for a cruise is fun, especially grabbing a new maxi dress and a casual dress for those special evenings is unforgettable experience.
Last time, I’d sailed with my aunt– a fashion-conscious lady, she picked some fabulous outfits for her 7-day cruise. I’m so impressed by the collection of her outfits.
Today, I will share the same impressive outfit ideas my aunt dresses up in. If you turn 40 or 50, this outfit list is for you. All the outfits in this list are elegant, versatile, comfortable, and best for over 50 ladies.
So let’s get into it.
Table of Contents
Outfit To Pack For 7 Days Cruise
We just came from a Caribbean cruise last month, and it was such a nice experience. The streets of the Aruban Islands and Puerto Rico were insane. One thing that further elevates your cursing experience is your outfit.
I suggest packing light and packing smart to prevent yourself from dragging bulky luggage.
Here is the perfect cruise outfit over 50 for a seven-day cruise.
- Two formal dresses (for the formal evening)
- 2 sundress / maxi dress
- 1 Jeans and two shirts
- 2 shorts and two blouses
- 2 swimsuits
- 2 cover-ups
- 1 – 2 night dresses
- 1 pair of running shoes
- 1 pair of walking sandals
- 1 pair of flip flop
Embarkation Day Dress
The first impression is the last impression. So, for embarkation day, wisely choose the outfit. But comfort is the key because everyone wants to feel comfortable in their outfits while dragging luggage.
I prefer to wear short and sleeveless summer dresses if you’re sailing to a tropical region. This flattering button-down summer dress is breathable and perfect for the first day. Strolling in this dress is a breeze.
Because of the flow and breezy skirt part, you will feel more relaxed and comfortable while walking on cruise ports. You can wear this dress for port excision and daytime.
A hat and comfortable walking sandals pair perfectly well with this dress. You can also wear cozy walking sneakers under this dress.
Sleeveless Summer Dress
Crewneck swing sundress.
Option 2: Mini Dress Pleated Ruffles
A woman over 50 looks so fantastic in a pleated ruffle dress. This mini dress has an attractive print, giving you a tropical vibe, and it’s perfect for Caribbean cruises.
The dress’s material is superb; it’s made of Rayon, which is a lightweight fabric. There are dozens of colors and designs, but I love Paisley Floral Black, which gives a classical feel.
Short Sleeve Mini Dress
Day time dress .
During the day, the sun radiates intense heat on the cruise, so wearing a breezy, breathable sundress is the best option. You can also go for shorts, capris, and tops.
Option 1: Floral Midi Dress
This cute floral dress has a beautiful print and features a scoop neck, empire waist, and smooth fabric. Also, it is suitable for pool parties and other outdoor fun.
The stretchy material hides your tummy. This dress is also light to pack in your luggage.
Floral Midi Dress
Option 2: beach vintage dress .
If you sweat a lot, this boho vintage-style attire is going to be your best companion onboard. The skin-friendly fabric, blowy design, and breathable texture will help you stay cool.
This one is also versatile, and you can dress it up for port activities, evening time, and on the beach.
Beach Vintage Dress
Option 3: capris with tops.
Capris are becoming so popular on the cruise because of comfort. It is perfect for dressing up for port excursions and exploring. The walking shoes or comfortable sandals look gorgeous with capris.
I love this stretchy lagging capris; slim ladies look stunning in this wear. This one is also lightweight, and the fabric moves with you no matter your direction.
French Terry Capris
Stretch women capri.
Option 4: Shorts & Tops
Nowadays, cruises have so much laid-back environment regarding outfits. Especially if you’re cruising with Norwegian, you have the freedom to wear whatever you want onboard.
For a more comfortable experience, shorts and tank tops are also perfect for women over 50. This hiking cargo short is the best bet if you want more pockets to hold your items or if port excursions include hiking.
Otherwise, you can wear these ripped jeans shorts with more casual vibes. I prefer to wear soft and light colors when it comes to tops and shirts, and you will look more sophisticated with this match.
Denim Shorts for Women
Beach & Port Outfits
Port excursions are the fun and best way to explore the culture of various countries, but it’s also a tedious task. However, with a comfortable dress, you can make your experience more amazing.
Option 1: Shorts Or Pants
Shorts, pants, or capris are the first options to pack for your cruise port excursions. Make sure to choose lightweight and breathable shorts and pants to scroll smoothly.
Check out this pull-on golf pants that comes with moisture-wicking technology and absorbs sweat. Best for tropical regions like the Caribbean islands or Santorini.
With shorts and pants, you can opt for v-neck t-shirts that my aunt wore for two days on her last cruise.
Women’s Pull-on Golf Pant
V neck casual tshirts.
Option 2: Maxi Dresses
This loose Bohemian floral dress is a great pick for plus-size ladies . My aunt is a little curvy, and when I suggested this dress to her, she instantly grabbed it.
The smart floral pattern gives the best tropical vibes; you can wear it on ports and on beaches, and it’s also perfect for cruise evenings. This dress comes in many vibrant colors, but I like the purple and floral421.
Casual Loose Bohemian Floral Dress
Option 3: consider shoulder tops .
Off-shoulder tops pair well with pants or shorts. This Boho floral print-off shoulder top will make you look attractive and sexy. It has a tie knot on the front, so you can adjust it according to your belly.
Casual Boho Floral Off Shoulder
Other items to pack for ports excursions in your carry-on, 1- swimwears.
Regarding swimwear, I prefer coverage, and this women’s halter one-piece skirt is one of my top swimsuits for cruise voyages. It features a low-back design that looks more elegant and hides your tummy. This swimsuit is available in many bold colors; the blue and black are my favorite.
Recommended: One Piece Swimsuits
2- Cover Ups
Onboard, you’re not allowed to enter any restaurant or bar wearing that swimwear. So, once you’ve had your fill of sun by the pool, it’s time to throw on some cover-ups. This v-neck chiffon cover-up is the best bet for women over 50, as it’s made of polyester and feels so much more comfortable on the body.
Recommended: Blooming Jelly Womens Swimsuit
Strolling on a Caribbean beach under the blazing sun can cause you headaches. That’s why you always wear hats while enjoying these beaches. This beautiful Panama Summer Beach hat is an amazing option for ladies.
Recommended: Panama Roll up Hat
4- Water shoes and Flip flops
Water shoes and flip-flops are essential beach essentials. So I must pack them. Especially if your port excursions include rough tracks, you can’t ignore the significance of water shoes. They protect your feet from being hurt by sharp stones.
Recommended Water Shoes: Athletic Hiking Water Shoes
Recommended Flip Flops: Arch Support Recovery Flip Flops
Formal Night Or Elegant Night Outfits
Typically, there are two formal evenings on a 7-day cruise. But it can vary depending on your cruise, so make sure to check the number of special nights before packing formal dresses.
On most of the cruises, there is a dress code for an elegant night. Most females wear cocktail dresses, capris, and tops, or maxi dresses. So, you can choose any of them.
Option 1: Cocktail Dress
I’m a big fan of cocktail dresses because they make you look more sophisticated. This beautiful cocktail dress is perfect for ladies over 50. The pattern is crazy and gives a more professional look. Plus, the slit sleeves design makes it a super comfortable party dress.
Lace Chiffon Evening Dress
Option 2: long maxi dress .
Another great idea for formal nights is the long maxi dress. Long dresses are more comfortable for women over 50; along with comfort, you will look more sophisticated and elegant in these attires.
I’ve got this amazing summer wrap maxi dress featuring a neck so you can show your necklace. These low-heeled sandals look great with this maxi dress.
Formal Maxi Dresses
Women’s wedge heel sandal.
Option 3: Mid-length pencil dress
The mid-length pencil dress is a go-to option if you’ve got a beautiful, slim body. This slim clothing highlights the cuts of your body, making you look more sexy and affluent.
No matter if you’re at 50 or 60, these pencil dresses are okay until you have a slim body. But you can look for the first two options if you’re a curvy lady.
Nonetheless, t his amazing pencil dress from Amazon is one of my top picks. It features a ruffle on the right and covers the line of the body to look slimmer.
3/4 Sleeve Bodycon Ruffle Vintage
Final Thought
I hope you’ve captured some amazing cruise ideas. For over 50 women, the key thing is comfort, so always go for a dress that makes you feel comfortable onboard. Plus, you don’t need to compromise on the look and style of the outfit; there are numerous outfits out there to choose from.
Ultimately, I would like to say that always pack light and smart for your cruise. Don’t put the entire wardrobe in your luggage because it might be challenging.

Decoding Cruise Dress Codes
If you’re wondering how to dress on cruise ship, then remember balance is the key. Setting sail on a cruise ship marries comfort with high style. Aim for versatile pieces that transition from day to evening. Opt for breathable fabrics ; they promise ease and elegance under the sun. Layering becomes your fashion secret weapon, offering adaptability for unpredictable temperatures. Embrace accessories—they elevate simple outfits and save precious cabin space. Think statement jewelry and bold scarves. Don’t forget footwear; comfortable, stylish shoes are essential. Lean towards chic flats and functional wedges for seamless movement onboard. Every ensemble should capture the spirit of the sea—effortless, classic, and always ready for the next adventure.
DEVELOP YOUR INDIVIDUAL VACAY STYLE
Crafting your individual style beyond 50 isn’t just about following trends—it’s about setting them with personal twists. Start by identifying colors that complement your skin tone and pieces that highlight your best features. Invest in quality basics and personalize with signature accessories like a vintage brooch , fine jewelry or a silk scarf.
Delve into textures and patterns that tell a story, like artisanal weaves or classic floral prints. Experiment with asymmetric cuts to add modern edge. Cultivate a collection of statement belts—they can redefine the silhouette of any outfit. Remember, personal style in cruise outfits for ladies over 50 resonates in the details: think eclectic cufflinks, heirloom watches, or a bespoke hat. These elements aren’t just additions; they’re reflections of a life richly lived.

Cruise outfits for ladies over 50 blend style with sun-savvy sensibilities. Choose light, airy kaftans in vibrant colors—chic yet sun-conscious. Incorporate wide- brimmed hats ; they protect and add a flair of sophistication. Opt for wrap dresses in breathable fabrics, perfect for onboard breezes and sun-drenched decks. Embrace long, flowing skirts teamed with floral blouses. Complete the look with polarized sunglasses —essential for glare-free vision and an air of mystery. Bags: Smart and Stylish Storage
Opt for big canvas totes that secure your essentials and distribute weight evenly. Go for designs with zipped compartments that combine security with accessibility. A fanny bag serves well for poolside lounging or shore excursions.

Accessorizing with Purpose
Adorn your evening wear with pearls or metallics for a touch of glamour. Glamorous clutch bags add a refined touch while keeping your essentials at hand. Opt for a statement watch or bracelet—it’s both functional and fashionable. Remember, accessories not only complement but also complete your nighttime cruise attire.
WINTER CRUISE OUTFIT IDEAS: LAYER WITH CONFIDENCE
Layering with outerwear becomes an art form for ladies over 50 aboard a cruise, marrying practicality with panache . Here’s a comprehensive guide:
- Start with a lightweight, water-resistant puffer jacket . This piece acts as a shield against unpredictable sea breezes while remaining effortlessly stylish.
- Add a tailored blazer . It’s a chameleon of sorts, fitting for casual daywear or evening dining.
- Incorporate fine-knit cardigans . They offer a layer of warmth without the bulk, keeping your look sleek and comfortable.
- For cooler nights, a pashmina or cashmere wrap is essential. They provide cozy elegance and can easily be draped over the shoulders for a touch of sophistication.
Each layer should coordinate, allowing for a smooth transition through the cruise’s varying temperatures and occasions.
Smart Packing Strategies for Cruising
Efficient packing for cruising is key for ladies over 50, aiming for both function and flair. Here’s how to pack smartly:
- Choose good quality, spacious and smart luggage bags that are easy to carry.
- Emphasize multipurpose garments : Choose items like a black maxi dress that transitions from day to night with ease.
- Rely on mix and match pieces : Pack tops and bottoms that work in multiple outfits, allowing for different looks.
- Select wrinkle-resistant fabrics : Keep your wardrobe ready-to-wear, straight out of the suitcase.
- Don’t forget a sarong : It’s the ultimate versatile piece, doubling as a skirt, dress, or cover-up.
This approach ensures a suitcase filled with possibilities, not excess.
BE READY TO EVOLVE YOUR STYLE
Fashion after fifty isn’t just about what’s in, it’s about sailing into the horizon with confidence and a style that’s all your own. Let each outfit you pack be a chapter of your story, radiating the elegance and adventure that comes with every nautical mile. It’s a time to highlight your life’s journey through styles that speak to you. With each ensemble, flaunt your age as a badge of sophistication and a spark of your unique spirit. After all, real style doesn’t age, it simply evolves with you, as fabulous and as fearless as ever. Here’s to smooth seas and a style as timeless and endless as the ocean. Bon voyage, darling!

After years of sharing cruise fashion photos on my Facebook profile, many of you have asked me to write more about cruise wear for over 50 women, over 60 and even over 70. I encourage you to think of my ideas as a template for using what you already own to dress well on a luxury cruise. While I usually purchase a couple of new pieces, most of what I wear has been hanging in my closet for a few years.
Also, the photos on this article are not current. So don’t look at them for the latest styles. Instead, use the photos as a guide to mixing and matching. The goal is to create your own cruise wear for women style guide that works well for new or old pieces.

One of the reasons that I enjoy luxury cruising is that I get to dress up. For most of my days in Montana , I wear exercise pants and a sweatshirt (or t-shirt in the summer). When it’s time to go out to dinner, I change into blue jeans, nice shirt and boots. Boring!
A cruise changes that dynamic. It’s my time to dress up and be girly. Alan appreciates it.
And I like that dressing up for a cruise is the push that I need to stay healthy and fit. Feeling good about myself is the end result. And that’s an important component to boomer health .
What’s my secret? Picking a clothing line like Chico’s ( shop here ) or J.Jill ( take a look ) where the items easily mix and match to create many variations of an outfit. I don’t claim to pack light, but I do plan an efficient cruise wardrobe.
My rule of thumb: wear an item at least twice during the cruise or put it back in the closet.
How do I accomplish this? On a 21-day cruise, I’ll pack about 3 to 4 pair of pants for evenings, with a color scheme that allows me to mix and match the tops to create different looks.
Who wants to wear the same thing each night? Not me! I might as well be back at home in Montana dressed in sweatshirt and warmup pants.
To start this cruise fashion series off, I’m sharing some of the looks that I wore on a 42-day cruise from Hong Kong to Vancouver . There were 6 formal nights and 36 elegant casual evenings.
In this article, I’m showing ways that I combine pieces of clothing to dress for a cruise. Look for more articles on formal nights, tropical cruise gear , cold weather cruise wear , adventure cruise dressing, and packing strategies soon.
For now, let’s take a look at some of the clothes that I’ll be wearing. And sorry about the lighting. I’m not a big fan of taking photos of myself (I’m shy) and usually seek out a private area to photograph the outfits rather than a well-lit public area of the ship.
For me, cruise wear for women over 50 starts at Chico’s
After moving to Tucson many years ago, I discovered Chico’s. The clothes fit me, they’re easy to mix and match—especially with the knowledgeable help of a Chico’s associate—and pieces carry over from one season to another, with the addition of one or two pieces to freshen things up.
Once I figured out my style, for me that’s pants that are slimming and long tops with a classic look, I became a happy customer. That’s right, Chico’s doesn’t pay me to write about them. Now on to cruise outfits.
I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of this black travelers pants and tank top. And I especially like that Chico’s has narrowed the pants leg to match the current styles. Remember how baggy travelers pants used to be?
In the first photo, I’m dressed for formal night with a sheer sparkly long sleeve jacket, silver sparkly shoes, dressy jewelry and black evening bag. No, it isn’t ultra formal but the understated look fits right in on most formal nights.
The second time I wore this outfit, I topped it off with a royal blue fringe jacket and long necklace. This look would work for either informal nights or elegant casual (although I’d change out the shoes for elegant casual night).
The third outfit pairs a geometric black and white jacket, casual necklace and shoes, with the same pants and top. Three different looks!
Now let’s switch to white pants. This is the 2017 version of the Chico’s So Slimming Brigitte ankle pants . I’ve added a blue tank to the blue fringe jacket for a more casual outfit.
The center photo showcases my favorite top. I think it’s a much better look than cold shoulder tops. And, as you’ll see in the next series of photos, it can be dressed up or down.
The third photo shows a black travelers tank with geometric white and black jacket, worn with a long silver necklace.
And here’s an example of how versatile a top can be. Worn loose over black travelers pants, the top looks somewhat dressy. Tie it at the waist, over a pair of So Slimming pants, change out the jewelry and the look becomes more casual. And, you’ll notice, the sleeves have slits in them. Again, I like this better than a cold shoulder top.
But who wants to wear black and white ALL the time? Let’s add in a third color. I’ve worn these taupe travelers pants for several years.
In the first photo, I’ve combined the pants with a matching tank and lace jacket. Add sparkly silver shoes and a malachite necklace and I’m ready for formal night. Yes, I’ll be understated but will still feel that I’m appropriately dressed.
The peach sweater in the middle photo came from the 2017 fall collection. Now the pants work for elegant casual night. And the shell necklace is a really old Chico’s find. That’s the beauty of my favorite clothing line. One or two pieces and I’ve updated my look.
The last photo shows that yes, black and taupe do go together, especially if you wear gold jewelry.
This isn’t all that I packed for 42 days, but it gives you an idea of how I mix and match cruise wear.
What about formal night?
I’m planning to write several posts on dressing for formal night. For now, here’s how I mix and match clothes to create a formal night outfit.

Considering going on a cruise holiday? Since you will be spending a significant amount of time on the cruise ship, it is crucial to think about what clothing items you should bring along. However, creating a packing list can either be an enjoyable or a challenging task during the entire trip.
There are many different factors to consider when packing for your upcoming cruise. You might have limited space in your suitcase and need to avoid wrinkling your cruise clothes as much as possible. And, if you’re over a certain age, the task of deciding what to wear on a cruise can become even more challenging. This means choosing specific colors and patterns, avoiding certain types of fabric, and bringing items that can easily mix and match.
If you are over the age of 50 and planning a cruise, you will find this article helpful. Read on for excellent casual cruise wear outfit ideas, formal night options, accessories, bathing suits, and cover-ups to wear on your next cruise!
Most cruise lines have a fairly casual dress code during the day, which means that wearing a t-shirt, tank top, or pretty blouse with some comfortable shorts and tennis shoes as a cruise outfit is completely acceptable.
However, there may still be some planning involved. Some days may include a shore excursion, in which case some comfortable shoes will need to be worn with your outfit. Other days may include a beach day, where you’ll be needing a swimsuit and some SPF lip balm.
Read on to discover the most essential day cruise outfits and items.
Sundresses and Maxi Dresses
Maxi and midi dresses are essential clothing items that you can wear again and again. When it comes to what you should wear on a cruise, they are no exception. A cute maxi dress or sundress will allow you to stay cool and look stylish in hot places without air-conditioning, like on a Mediterranean cruise or a Caribbean cruise. These beautiful dresses can also be dressed up or down easily, depending on the occasion, which makes it easier to pack light.
No matter what your age or body type is; there are plenty of maxi and summer dresses out there that will suit you. More and more mature women are embracing a more adventurous attitude to fashion and breaking out of the restrictive ‘muumuu’ mold. Why shouldn’t you?
Be sure to pack a few of these dresses among other cruise essentials in your packing cubes.
Rompers and Shorts
If you’re going on a cruise to a hot location, you’ll definitely want to pack some shorts or rompers.
Shorts are versatile and you can pair them with almost any top. For more casual outfits, you can wear shorts with a t-shirt and some flip-flops. For something smarter, you can swap your flip-flops out for wedge heels, and pair them with a floral top with a little more coverage.
Rompers are a great way to save space in your suitcase since they’re an outfit all by themselves. If you pack a romper with a nautical stripe, it will be ideal to wear on a port or sea day.
Evening Wear
Part of the fun of cruising is dressing up. Cruise lines create a variety of different evenings, from smart casual evenings to cocktail parties or formal nights in the dining room. If you’re over 50 and planning to take a cruise, you may be concerned about what type of clothing is appropriate for these evenings. The good news is that there are plenty of cruises and itineraries, so you have a variety to choose from.
In addition to your standard casual and formal dinners, many cruises also offer more creative activities like art auctions or even a murder mystery dinner with costumes required.
However, in general, the dress code for most cruise ships isn’t as restrictive as you might think. If you plan on taking a cruise anytime soon, it’s best to check the dress code beforehand so that you can pack accordingly.
Here are some of our favorite evening wear items to pack for a cruise.
Cocktail Dresses
There’s no doubt that the cocktail dress is a glamorous piece of clothing. When worn at the right event, it can make you feel like a Hollywood star. However, it can be difficult to find the right cocktail dress if you’re on the older end of the age spectrum. Many of them are cut quite revealing and leave little to the imagination.
If you’re looking for something more appropriate for your age range, opt for a long or mid-length cocktail dress. You can never go wrong with the classic little black dress!
Cocktail dresses come in a variety of styles, and you may need to shop around for something flattering to your figure. One style that looks great on most women is a halter top.
Floral Dresses
Floral dresses are perfect for casual evenings on a cruise, but can also be dressed up to suit a smart casual dinner. Who says women over fifty have to stick to solid colors?
Flower power is the way forward! Whether you’re into bold hues or neutral pastels, there are plenty of options out there for mature women. A short floral dress with bell sleeves is perfect for dinner, and a long halter-neck floral dress can be paired easily with a shawl for some of the colder evenings on the deck.
Off-the-shoulder and Floral Tops
If you’re not crazy about dresses, or you want to add some variety to your cruise outfits, be sure to pack some floral tops. They look amazing with some white pants or dark jeans and can be worn to more casual and smart casual occasions.
We recommend an off-the-shoulder or spaghetti strap floral top if you’re looking for something sexier, or a bell sleeve for a more comfortable look.
Capri Pants, Jeans, and Trousers
Because modern-day cruise wear is much more casual than it used to be, capri pants, dark jeans, and trousers will be your bread and butter! You can wear them on colder days, or pair them with a pretty top in the evenings.
There are also a wide variety of denim and capri pants that come with built-in tummy support if you’re looking for some added comfort.
Alternatively, you can opt for jumpsuits! Much like floral dresses and tops, these come in almost every style and pattern imaginable, and they are a great way to save space in your suitcase on a cruise.
Whether you’re sunbathing on the pool deck or out on a beach day, going on a cruise means your packing list will include some swimwear. For women of mature age, this might mean more than just a bikini.
Bathing Suit
The first thing most people think of packing for a cruise is a bathing suit. However, it would be a great idea to pack two, so that they can take turns drying out after you’ve been in the water.
While we believe that women of all shapes, sizes, and ages can rock a bikini, you may want something less revealing. In that case, we’d suggest opting for a flattering one-piece swimsuit instead. And the great part about them is that they can still be stylish and sexy!
If you have great shoulders but feel more self-conscious about your torso, you can try a bathing suit with built-in tummy control. Or, if you’re still happy with your chest but don’t like your thighs, you can try a swim dress with a plunging neckline.
Another great space-saving tip is to invest in a swimsuit cover-up before going on your cruise. They turn a swimsuit into an acceptable, casual outfit to wear indoors or at cruise ship restaurants.
The kind of cover-up you decide to wear is entirely up to you, and they come in many different styles. There are cover-up dresses, which are perhaps the best option if you plan on spending time indoors. However, if you’re simply looking for something to wear on the beach after coming out of the water, or on your way to your cabin before changing into some dry clothes, you can try a wrap skirt or a sheer lace cover-up dress.
Essential Accessories
Cruise vacations offer a unique experience onboard and when exploring ports of call. Because you won’t be spending all your days in your cabin like with other types of travel, and you’re not going to have access to your entire personal wardrobe, you’ll need to pack smartly. Here is a list of the most essential cruise accessories before setting sail.
There’s nothing quite as charming as a woman in a wide-brimmed hat. It’s the perfect way to protect your face and neck from the sun, while still looking stylish. A wide-brimmed sunhat can also be very versatile, depending on what you wear it with. Apart from lip balms with SPF, some sunscreen, and some after-sun gel, a foldable sunhat is a must-have item if you’re going on a cruise.
Shawls or cardigans
Even on a Caribbean cruise or Mediterranean cruise, evenings on cruise ships can get quite chilly- especially if you’re out on the deck in the sea breeze. Be sure to include some light cardigans or pashmina shawls in your packing list.
Even if you’re not fond of wearing flip-flops, we would still suggest throwing a pair of these in your suitcase before going on a cruise.
They’re inexpensive, easy to pack, and come in so many cute patterns that they may even convert the biggest flip-flop hater. You can also buy some orthopedic flip flops, which include foot support and are more comfortable to walk in for longer periods of time.
Another great thing about these little gems is that they are a life-saver in wardrobe malfunctions, like snapped straps on sandals or broken heels. They can be easily carried in your bag, to have on hand in case of an emergency.
Purses and handbags
On a cruise, carrying a purse or wallet is fairly optional, and most passengers find that it’s not really necessary.
However, a casual tote bag might come in handy by the pool area, on the beach, or during port days for storing sun protection, chapstick, your favorite book, reading glasses, and water bottles. And, if you’re joining some smart casual or formal evenings, you can spice up your outfit with an evening bag or a small clutch to store your cabin key card, lipstick, and cell phone.

Q. What kind of clothes do you wear on a cruise?
There is no particular restriction when it comes to cruise wear, so just wear things that you’re most comfortable with – whether it’s jeans, skirts, or maxi dresses. Of course, if you want to make the most of your trip and take some memorable pictures then keep a mix of different types of casual and semi-formal clothes so you can try something new every day.
Q. Can I wear jeans on a cruise?
Most cruises don’t allow jeans for formal dinners, so it is important to check this with your cruise management before you leave. For longer cruise trips, jeans and shorts are acceptable for daywear and informal gatherings.
Q. Should I carry a purse on a cruise?
Once you’re on board, you probably won’t need your wallet so it should ideally be stored safely in your rooms. Carrying a purse or handbag is completely your choice – if you feel like it complements your outfit or that you can safely carry it around, then do go for it. Many women also prefer carrying handbags on cruises to store items they might need like makeup, sunscreen, perfumes, etc.
Q. Do I have to attend the cruise gala night?
Attending the formal nights is not necessary so you can skip it if you want. But I would recommend that you attend it at least once to enjoy that experience. After all, you paid for the cruise, so why not make the most of your time there?

What to wear on a cruise – the cruise clothing essentials to pack
by Sylvia | 3 comments
Going on a cruise this season? Lucky you! It’s a great way to visit several destinations in one trip. But that can also make it tricky to decide what to pack. Below, we will show you what to wear on a cruise and which cruise clothing essentials you will need, This will ensure that you have everything you need for shore excursions and fun aboard the ship.
Rooms on board ships tend to be small with limited space. Although, the big advantage is that, even though you are traveling to multiple destinations, you only need to unpack once! Your accommodation is also your mode of transportation.
But, you will still want to plan your outfits carefully and pack pieces that you can wear in multiple ways so you don’t take up vital cabin space.
Below, you will find our list of what to wear on cruise and what to pack to set sail for sunny destinations in style. But first, some general tips when thinking about what to pack for your cruise vacation.
Is it okay to wear jeans on a cruise?
Should you take your trusty jeans on your cruise? Yes, denim is definitely acceptable in most situations, although think about how much room it will take up in your case. You can wear denim shorts during the day, and you’ll probably be able to wear your jeans in the evening. Just check the dress code for your cruise line as some don’t allow jeans in the dining room at night.
What colors should you wear on a cruise?
Anything goes when it comes to your choice of colors. Make sure that you think about how your clothes will go together to create different choices. Have fun with your color combinations. And, we’d avoid too many dark colors as they go ‘against’ the fun element of a cruise.
Do you still have to dress up on cruises?
Some cruise lines do still have a dress code for diner, so be sure to check. Plus, dressing up is one of the fun things about a cruise. It’s a great excuse to make an effort with your evening outfits.
what to wear on a cruise – Your cruise packing list
Below is what we recommend taking along for a cruise trip. Take a look for your what to wear on a cruise packing essentials.
Cruise dresses for day and night
Dresses don’t take up much space in your luggage, and are vacation workhorses.
A dress can take you from brunches and lunches on board and can easily be dressed up or down with a change of shoes.
If the weather is warm or humid, a dress can be worn alone or paired with a jacket or lightweight sweater when it turns cooler at night.
Wear your dress with comfortable gladiator sandals or stylish slip on sneakers in a metallic hue.
Pack at least one stylish maxi dress and a sundress in a shorter length.
Cruise essential – Maxi dress or jumpsuit
A maxi dress or jumpsuit can be perfectly laidback, or more formal, depending on the cruise you are going on.
Choose one which you can sling over your swimsuit after a day at the pool so that you can head to the bar for cocktails.
You can pop a cardigan or wrap over for evenings.

what to wear on a cruise – a Versatile sundress
As well as a maxi dress, you will want an easy-breezy knee-length or midi style that you can wear for days on board as well as for sightseeing excursions.
Choose a dress that you can easily pop over your swimwear, but which will also take you from day to night.
A dress in a light fabric will be perfect. You can wear over your swimsuit, or for sightseeing with sandals. Or you can dress up with heels for evening. You can also wear over pants for a different look.
Polo Ralph Lauren Ivara Floral Puff-Sleeve Midi-Dress
Evening dress for cruise formal night
If you’re thinking about what to wear on cruise and what to pack, consider that most cruise have formal nights. Depending on the cruise line, it can be anywhere from an elegant dressy affair to a more casual dinner and cocktails.
Pack two dinner outfits if your cruise is a week, so you’ll be prepared. As well as a cocktail dress, We’d be tempted to pack a jumpsuit as these can easily be dressed up or down. A black dres s will go with everything and you can easily change it up with accessories to create different looks.
J.Crew A-Line Matte Jersey Midi Dress
What to wear on a cruise – Tops
I’d keep the tops you choose, like the rest of your cruise outfits, very versatile.
Opt for tops you can either dress down for day, or dress up with jewelry and heels for evening. Also, choose tops which you can wear either with pants or shorts, or over your swimwear as cover-ups.
A T-shirt (or more) is essential no matter where you are going. The Caslon T-shirt (below), will add interest to your daytime outfits, and could be dressed up with wide leg pants or a midi skirt for evening.
Caslon Twist Hem V-Neck T-Shirt
A tunic top is the ideal choice as you can pop over your swimsuit for days onboard, but you can also wear over your shorts or pants for days spent ashore sightseeing. You can leave loose or tuck it in to create different looks.
Natori Barong Gradient Tunic
When thinking about what to pack for a cruise, a shirt is so useful for your trip. You can wear over your shirts or pants, you can tuck into jeans or a skirt, or you can wear over your swimsuit as a cover-up.
120% Lino Linen Buttoned Shirt
If you’re cruising somewhere warm, you may want to opt for some sleeveless tops. Tank tops can be worn with your shorts, pants or skirts, or are useful for layering under your shirts, or you can always wear as pajama tops. The J.Crew tank top (below) features a bra shelf for extra support.

Day to night top
Choose a top that will go with your shorts during the day and that you can elevate at night with a statement necklace. If you choose a top in a beautiful material or with some draping, you can easily dress it up or down.
Ramy Brook Sabrina Surplice Tie Top
What to wear on a cruise – pants and shorts
When considering what to wear on a cruise, think about the weather. If you’re going for sunny locations, it’s highly recommended you bring shorts. On most cruises, you’ll be going ashore to explore ports of call. Pack a pair of stylish crop pants or shorts to wear for sightseeing.
Choose pants or shorts you can move comfortably in. You probably want to avoid denim as this isn’t the coolest fabric in hot weather.
cropped pants
A pair of pants will also be a hardworking staple of your cruise wardrobe. Choose a cropped pair to keep your ankles cool. You can wear it with your t-shirt and sandals or sneakers for the day, or you can dress up with a silky top and heeled sandals for the evening.

palazzo pants
A pair of wide, palazzo pants can look effortlessly stylish on a cruise or vacation. Wear with your tank top and shirt and sandals during the day.

What to pack for a cruise: Shorts
A pair of shorts is a must for casual days on the ship and for excursions. Choose a pair that is mid-length so you have enough coverage but is also cool.
The J.Crew chinos (below) are a good mid-length, and come in a choice of neutral shades.

Kylie @kylish_aus above chooses a classic shorts and shirt outfit and makes sure to protect her face and eyes.

Packing for a cruise – Swimsuits & cover-ups
Pack at least two swimsuits for your trip, so you can rotate them in case the other is wet. There’s nothing worse than having to put on a wet swimsuit.
Choose cover-ups which you can wear not just over your swimwear, but also as tops and dresses.
You will want more than one swimsuit as you will want to be in a position where you can rinse one out and leave it to dry, and wear the other one.
We’d make one of your swimsuits a classic black or one color style as you can wear it under any cover-up you choose, or you can wear it with shorts or pants instead of a top.

You could also opt for a tankini. That way you can wear the bikini bottoms with the rashvest below or the tankini top.

If you might be spending some time swimming, snorkeling or paddle boarding, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t get sunburned. A rash vest can protect your chest and arms from UV rays. The rashguard swimsuit (below) comes well-reviewed with wearers saying it is a flattering fit, and you can leave it slightly unzipped for a sexier look, or fully zipped for more coverage.
Trina Turk Solar Floral Half Zip Rashguard Swimsuit
Choose a hardworking cover-up that you can pop on over your swimsuit, or wear with your pants as a top.
You might also wish to pack a longer cover-up. Depending on your ports of call, this could be useful if you are visiting any religious sites such as temples and you need to cover your knees and shoulders.
Elan Wrap Maxi Cover-Up Dress
Depending on the style of cover-up you choose, you can wear it over your swimwear, or as a duster jacket on cooler evenings. The Farm Rio sarong (below) would look good over your bathing suit.

What to take on a cruise – jackets, Wraps & cardigans
If you are heading to a tropical destination, you may think you don’t need warm clothing. But, you are likely to want a wrap or cardigan (or both) for cooler evenings on deck, and because you will find that much of the ship is air-conditioned.
short jacket
A short jacket can be an incredibly flattering choice to wear over your maxi dresses as it can make your legs look long in comparison to your torso. The Mother denim jacket (below) comes in a pattern that will make your denim jacket stand out.

Kimba @kimbalikes above chooses pink denim with her cargo pants.

A cardigan is also a versatile option. You can wear over your dresses as well as if you have a plane journey to and from your first and final port.

4 pairs of cruise shoes to pack
It may seem like a lot, and we agree as usually we’d recommend only packing 3 pairs of shoes for most vacations.
However, for a cruise, it’s useful to have a pair of pool shoes you don’t mind getting wet, some smarter flat sandals, a pair of comfy sneakers for walking on excursions, and a pair of low heels to go with your evening dress. And, your flat shoes won’t take up much room.
Choose a pair of stylish, yet comfy sandals which you can wear for walking around your ship and for days offshore which don’t require too much strenuous walking.
TOMS Sidney Tread Sandals
Flip flops are always handy to have, and they don’t take up very much room in your luggage at all. Slip on after your swims on the ship.
Tory Burch Miller Soft Sandals
Excursion sneakers
You may find that some excursions require more walking than others. Perhaps you are hiking to a waterfall, or walking up steps to get to a fabulous view. I’d pack either some comfortable canvas slip-ons or walking shoes.
Dolce Vita Zina Sneakers
Low heels for evening
Even if you don’t tend to take heels on vacation with you, when you are cruising, you are likely to find that there is an eveningwear dress code. Your heels will go well with your formal evening dress.
Make sure to opt for block heels because these are much easier to walk in while you’re at sea than thinner heels like stilettos or kitten heels and they won’t damage the deck.
Opt for a lower or block heel. Really high heels on a swaying boat can be difficult to walk in or dance the night away in.
Vionic Chardonnay Ankle Straps Heeled Sandals
Nikki @midlifechic above shows how you could wear flat sandals with your evening dress.

You may also want to look at the most comfortable heels that look hip and are comfortable to wear .
Cruise outfits – Accessories to pack on a cruise
Accessories can make or break an outfit anywhere, and the same applies to a cruise. But, they can be even more vital on vacation.
You will want a sun hat to protect your head and face from the sun, a pair of sunglasses to add style and protect your eyes, and a crossbody bag which you can keep your purse secure in when you leave the ship for excursions.
If you’re heading to sunny climes, a hat is vital to protect your skin and your eyes. You can wear while reading your book by the pool, and for sightseeing. Choose a style with a wide brim to keep the sun off your face.
The straw hat (below) is ideal for packing for a trip, and it comes in a wide choice of colors, so you’re sure to find a shade that goes with your cruise trip capsule. Reviewers say it looks great on everyone, and it holds its shape well.
Lanzom Wide Brim Straw Panama Hat
Excursion bag
Take a small crossbody bag to hold your essentials.
Select a bag that works with your daytime casual outfits and is large enough to easily hold your cell phone, passport, money cards and sunscreen – keeping everything safe and secure if you are heading out on a shore excursion.
Your excursion bag will have to be hardworking. You want to make sure it is stylish, but that it will keep your belongings close to you.
The Travelon anti-theft messenger bag is a favorite among travelers.
Also take a look at our article on the best travel purses .
Travelon Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag
Slip a small evening clutch into your luggage. It won’t take up much room but will make your outfit evening-ready. Make sure it’s large enough to hold your cellphone and lipstick.
Olga Berg Amalia Pleated Woven Straw Clutch
beach or tote bag
A tote bag is useful so you can pack a towel and your book for going ashore, or a tote if you just want to carry your essentials around the boat.
Longchamp Le Pliage Green Recycled Canvas Large Tote
You probably don’t want to take anything too valuable when considering what to pack for a cruise, but a few well-chosen pieces can make a big difference to your cruise outfits. Plus, they won’t take up too much room in your luggage, or your cabin.
A statement necklace or earrings can dress up an outfit to get you ready for a drink at the bar.
Lizzie Fortunato Interval Cultured Pearl Collar Necklace
BaubleBar Macaw Me Beaded Statement Drop Earrings
Just as your sunhat is important for both protection and style, your sunglasses will protect your eyes and add some pizzazz to all of your daytime outfits. Choose a color that will go with all your outfits.
Loewe Stella 52MM Acetate Sunglasses
Tamera @tamerabeardsley above (read her style interview here ) chooses an all-white outfit, and a wide-brimmed hat to shade her face from the sun.
Check out this similar off the shoulder top , pants , flats , woven bag , sunhat , earrings and sunglasses .
cruise essentials
As well as your outfits, you’ll want to pack some essentials into your suitcase.
No matter where you are traveling, sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from sun damage. Reviewers say the Neutrogena sunscreen (below) goes on sheer and can be worn under make-up.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Water Resistant and Non-Greasy Sunscreen Lotion
Mosquito repellent
You probably won’t need insect repellent while onboard your cruise as the ocean breeze will keep mosquitos away. But it’s useful to have for any excursions.
OFF! FamilyCare Mosquito Repellent IV
It can get breezy when you’re cruising, so to make sure your towel stays on your sunlounger, a couple of beach towel clips can be handy.
12 Pack Clothes Pins
your kindle
You can download all your reading material on your Kindle rather than carrying bulky books around with you. You can add guidebooks to the destinations you will be visiting as well as novels to read by the pool. The Kindle Oasis (below) is metal rather than plastic, and waterproof in case you splash it while by the water.

something to put it in
Of course, you’ll need something to pack your cruise clothing in. The TUMI suitcase (below) is well-reviewed and should be easy to roll up the gangplank.

I have been cruising for 10+ years with a group of women friends. My capsule consists of at least 2 swimsuits and dedicated cover-ups (don’t want suntan lotion stains/smells on a top I’m going to wear again). I bring a black skirt and black pants with 2-3 tops for regular dinners, and one dressy top/dress for formal nights. One outfit for an excursion (mostly we go to beach clubs, so swimsuit/cover-up works for that). Flip flops, low heels, sandals (we don’t do excursions requiring heavy walking), 1 pair of each. A crushable sun hat. A caftan for wearing in the room and a tee shirt/yoga pant for breakfast. All my clothes fit in an under-seat (rolling) carry on bag. Toiletries and one of the cover-ups/swimsuits to change into once on the ship go in a tote that becomes my beach bag and fits over the handle of my carry on.
This is a wonderful line-up of possibilities. And not only for on a cruise.
Hello Sylvia I been following your blog for a while now and I am a FAN and share it with all my “over 40” friends. Cruise Outfits for Women
Having trouble figuring out what exactly to wear on a cruise? You’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe.
In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.
I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.
You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post.
So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits.

Daytime Cruise Outfits
Embarkation day cruise outfits.
The first day of your cruise is exciting! You’re getting accustomed to your new home at sea with lots of exploring and finding a delicious cocktail.
Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready.
For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit . Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship.
I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea.
Pro Tip: Wear a swimsuit underneath your clothing with a stylish coverup and take advantage of the resort deck pool while everyone gets settled or hits up the buffet. It will feel like you’ve added an extra day on to your cruise!
What to wear on a Cruise Sea Day
Stick to casual clothing during the day on a cruise. A typical sea day on a cruise begins with breakfast, you can wear casual items like t-shirts, jean shorts, etc.
I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas .
After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup .
I always like to bring a larger tote bag so I can stick in all my essentials that I would need for a full pool day like sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and extra clothes if I decide to swim.
Just think about wearing classic resort casual wear for the daytime.
Not sure what resort casual wear is? I have a full post that explains it. Read What is resort casual wear & how to wear it .
Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.
What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Excursion
I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.
For a Caribbean cruise excursion, I would wear a swimsuit plus a coverup , and additional dry clothes if you want to change into something more comfortable after your day in the water, especially for warm destinations.
If you are not headed on a water excursion, wear casual clothing like sundresses , shirts, and shorts in light breathable materials like linen, cotton, or jersey.
Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain.
I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion. I wore a casual top and shorts and everyone else wore something similar. Keep in mind that Caribbean islands are hot and humid.
What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise Excursion
Here are some Cruise outfit ideas I wore on my Mediterranean cruise excursions in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.
If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise, your ports of call and excursions tend to be a bit different than a Caribbean Cruise.
Instead of mostly swim & snorkel excursions you’d find on a Caribbean cruise, Mediterranean cruises have more city sightseeing excursions that involve a lot of walking , touring, and being in a city center.
For example, if you stop in Naples Itay, you could explore the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, and even Pompei which all involve different kinds of daytime outfits.
I like to wear lightweight breathable dresses and comfortable walking shoes with a larger day bag to keep all my essentials inside.
Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward.
Evening Cruise Outfits
To be honest, I think that the ladies have an easier time with evening cruise outfits because mostly anything goes as long as it’s dressy. Darker-colored sundresses , cocktail dresses , or even pants with a dressy top will work.
Men on the other hand have more rules like long pants and collared shirts.
Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.
Casual Dinner Outfits
I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way.
Here are some examples of “casual” dinner cruise outfits. Keep in mind that I like to dress up no matter what the dress code is.
Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.
Formal Dinner Outfits
Here are some examples of formal dinner cruise outfits for the main dining room I’ve worn on recent cruises:
Some cruise lines have “ formal ” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax . Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses.
But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. It’s a great excuse to dress up a little.
Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code.
What to wear on a cruise
No matter if you are going on a Caribbean Cruise or a Mediterranean cruise, here are things you should pack for your next cruise.
Pack sundresses to wear during the day, early evening, and perhaps dinner. These can be flowy maxi dresses or shorter styles. My favorite Amazon Maxi dress looks more expensive than it is and works great on a cruise.
Bonus tip: find dresses in non-wrinkle materials such as jersey material so you won’t have to worry about trying to get the wrinkles out.
Swimwear & Cover-ups:
You will be living in a swimsuit & coverup on your cruise, so be sure you bring your favorites. I love this one piece from Amazon . It’s flattering on any body type, comes in multiple colors, and looks expensive.
This beach coverup from Amazon is also one of my favorites. It’s in a nice cotton gauze-like material and looks so sophisticated.
Lightweight Jacket / Scarf
No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.
I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm.
Dark Pants / Jeans:
Be sure to bring a dark pair of pants or jeans if you don’t want to wear dresses to dinner. Dark pant goes with any dressy top, and it’s a basic you can wear more than once on your cruise.
Evening Dress
A nice evening dress is essential for any cruise. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack.
Some of my favorite evening dresses from Amazon .
A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet – especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion.
You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea.
A great compromise is a shorter kitten heel, a wedge, or a dressy flat.
A pair of white sneakers go with everything and are comfortable to put on after wearing sandals for so many days. These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call.

Sun Hat & Pair of Sunglasses
Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap.
You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin.
I love bringing a stylish tote bag to throw all my essentials for the day inside like sunscreen, book, phone or tablet, an extra change of clothes, towel, etc.
I recommend this stylish tote from Amazon that I wore on my recent cruise. Or I love a sturdy canvas tote that goes with any outfit.
Mens Cruise Outfits
I can’t leave the men hanging, so here are some men’s cruise outfit ideas:
Men’s Day Outfits
During the day, men can wear casual clothing like swim trunks and a neutral shirt that is acceptable for the breakfast buffet and the resort deck.
Men’s Evening Cruise Outfits
Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men.
Cruises suggest men wear in general long pants or nice jeans, a collared dress shirt, and dress shoes.
For Formal Nights : Men should wear dress slacks, a collared shirt, and a sports coat. A tux or suit is optional, but double-check the specifics from your cruise line.

Cruise Outfits FAQ:
How many outfits to pack per day on a cruise.
I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing.
Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?
Generally yes, you do dress up for dinner on a cruise. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner.
What are the best clothes to wear on a cruise?
You’ll want to wear something comfortable and casual during the day. Don’t forget your swimsuit for excursions or lounging at the resort deck. And add something a bit dressy for the evening.
What NOT to wear on a cruise?
Now there are a few things not to wear on a cruise that pertain mostly to the evening. Flip flops, swimsuits tank tops, and shorts are generally not allowed inside restaurants during dinner.
Another thing to keep in mind is your footwear. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels , etc.
Let’s Sum it up on Cruise Outfits
I hope you found this post helpful for packing for your next cruise vacation. To sum it up here are things you need to think about when packing for cruise outfits.
- During the day you’ll want to bring something to wear around the cruise ship. Think comfortable and casual.
- Bring a swimsuit + coverup for days on the resort deck.
- I always recommend bringing something easy to throw on for quick runs to the buffet, especially in the morning for coffee!
Pro tip: bring a reusable insulated water bottle to fill up with coffee, water (or cocktails) to keep warm or cold throughout your cruise.
- During the evening pack something a bit dressier. For ladies that can be dark pants and a dressy top or a nice dress. Men should bring long pants and a collared shirt for dinner time.

Cruisewear for men: What guys should pack for a cruise
Perhaps one of the most understated joys of cruising is that you only have to unpack once. The challenge lies in what to pack in the first place. While some may say that guys have it easier than women, choosing the right cruisewear for men can be just as tricky.
No matter the destination, men will need certain clothing essentials for a cruise that they might not need for other vacations. This can range from attire for formal or themed nights to the right outfits for a range of activities in port.
If you're wondering exactly what you need to wear on a cruise — or need to assist your husband, father, son, partner or male friend — we've got you covered with helpful specifics on the perfect cruisewear for men. Read on to discover what guys should pack for their next cruise.
What should men wear during the day on a cruise?
Most cruises are casual getaways during the day. Pack and dress for the kind of activities you'll enjoy on board, whether it's lounging at the pool (a rash guard, swim trunks, flip-flops and a hat), sweating it out in the gym (athleticwear and sneakers) or hanging out with a book or card game in a lounge (shorts or jeans and a comfortable top).
Daytime dress can be a bit more elevated on Europe cruises, as well as ships with older or wealthier clientele. This more refined style can best be described as resort casual, where you'll find mostly polos and collared shirts during the day. Linen or khaki pants or Bermuda shorts complete the look.
Don't forget to pack appropriate clothing for activities in port. You'll want to dress in layers, bring a hat for sun protection, a jacket or vest for cool mornings or windy afternoons, and wear sturdy shoes for hikes or sneakers for exploring a town. Tote around beach flip-flops for a quick change if you're mixing up beach time with excursions that require more walking.
What's acceptable attire for men for dinner on casual evenings?
Across all cruise lines, table service dinners will always feel more elevated, often the only time of day when a dress code is clearly communicated. That said, casual evenings have become more casual, especially on the big-ship lines – which can be a relief to men who don't want to schlep their workweek suits on vacation with them.
As a general guideline, if you're at a table service restaurant for dinner (whether it be the main dining room or a specialty restaurant on board), men should dress in a collared shirt and long pants. Jeans tend to be acceptable on casual evenings, as long as they're not riddled with holes, and on some lines, like always-relaxed Norwegian Cruise Line, a nice T-shirt is fine. (A fitted T-shirt with a jacket over it is never a problem.)
What you can't wear, according to the dinner dress code on most lines, are bathing suits, cutoff jeans, sleeveless shirts and baseball hats.
Shorts are an ambiguous, often frowned upon, option for evening attire. Most dress codes won't specifically prohibit shorts, leaving it up to the individual. A pair of chino, pleated or linen shorts can suffice for a more refined look, especially when paired with a collared shirt. Cutoffs, denim, cargo shorts and sports shorts at any seated, table service dinner are a no-go.

As for shoes, sneakers can be permissible on nonformal nights, but footwear like beach flip-flops are often prohibited.
While teens should emulate the grown-ups for dinnerwear, most cruise lines don't fuss about the dress code for younger boys. If you can't get your kid into a polo shirt and khakis, a clean shirt and nonathletic shorts will suffice.
If you'd rather spend your evening in gym shorts and flip-flops, the buffet and other fast casual or counter-service venues will have more relaxed dress codes at night. Or, you can order room service and enjoy dinner in your bathrobe.
Are formal nights still a thing? Will I need to bring a tuxedo?
Most major cruise lines hold formal nights, usually twice on a weeklong sailing. These days, the theme is more "dress your best" or "elegant" than strictly formal. Even on big-ship cruise lines, guests find it fun to don a more upscale look, pose for a professional photo shoot and enjoy dinner, drinks and perhaps a show in style.
Formal nights on most lines don't mean black tie. On casual lines, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, men can get away with a button-down, long-sleeve shirt, khakis, nice shoes and no tie. On more upscale lines, guys should pack a suit or at least a sports coat and slacks. Ties are usually optional.
When in doubt, pack a jacket you can always take off if no one else is wearing one.
Some cruise lines, however, skew a bit fancier. Cunard features black-tie galas on its sailings that are often themed (think Roaring '20s and Masquerade Ball). P&O Cruises typically has signature black-tie evenings, and many smaller luxury lines (including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent) will host black-tie evenings throughout extended sailings.
While full tuxedo regalia on black-tie evenings is encouraged (satin lapel, pocket trim, satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers), a dark suit and necktie pass muster.

Also, culturally appropriate formal attire is always an option, such as Scottish kilt suits or military dress uniforms.
If you're traveling with family, boys and teenagers are required to dress in accordance with the guidelines for dining at table service restaurants on formal nights as well, but the stakes are lower. The minimum requirement for kids is nice slacks and a collared shirt. Teens should opt for dress shoes, but younger boys can get away with sneakers.
If you're taking family photos, tuxedos, suits, blazers and ties are not required but add flare and personality to a look. Get creative with kids who prefer comfort; put babies in a tuxedo-print onesie and young boys in an adorable sweater vest on formal evenings.
On some lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , elegant night is always optional.
Do guys need to dress up on theme nights?
Many cruise lines will have themed evenings or parties where you might want to dress the part. If you're attending a themed cruise (such as a gay cruise or music cruise ), be prepared for costume parties on multiple nights.
Popular theme nights are wide-ranging, though the most recurring are tropical parties (Hawaiian shirts encouraged), '80s nights and white nights (all-white attire).
Disney Cruise Line passengers regularly dress up for its hallmark Pirate Night. Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Night encourages guests to don red attire.
Themed attire on theme nights is not required for dining and is opt-in fun. If you're traveling with a group, organizing matching costumes or outfits can enhance the fun and make for great vacation photos. Check with your cruise line about which theme nights you should expect.

What are the best cruise clothing and accessories for men?
Need to add a few new pieces to your wardrobe before your cruise vacation? Here are our picks of cruisewear staples for men.
A classic Hawaiian shirt
If you're sailing on a tropical itinerary, you're going to want to make sure you pack at least one Hawaiian floral shirt. The Columbia Men's Tamiami Short-sleeve Shirt is a top choice, with SPF 40 sun protection and nice ventilation.
A shirt for hot days in port
At sea, you've got the benefit of the ocean breezes, but tropical ports can get sweltering hot, especially in the summer months. Opt for the Vineyard Vines Men's Destin Stripe Sankaty Performance Polo for its moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric, along with its SPF 30 sun protection.
A pair of travel pants
The best pair of travel pants balance comfort and function and are acceptable on board and in port. The 33,000ft Men's Waterproof Pants are surprisingly comfortable, breathable and have a nice flexible give to them. They also feature a commendable 10,000mm waterproof rating, great for coverage if you get stuck exploring in the rain.
A pair of sandals for most occasions
From the pool deck to the streets of a port, the right pair of sandals signify vacation. The sophisticated yet practical Ecco Men's Flowt Luxe Slide Sandals are an ideal match for days spent walking, yet have an elegant design that can fit well into a smart, casual dinner on board. If the dinner dress code has a strict no-sandals policy, the Cole Haan Men's 2.Zerogrand Penny Loafers are a great nautical alternative.
The ideal layer for windy nights on deck
When you're out at sea it can get windy, especially at night. Pack The North Face Men's Cyclone Windbreaker Jacket , which features a compact, lightweight and durable design. The jacket is windproof, water-repellent and has UPF 40+.
Water shoes to protect your feet
If you're planning for any water-based adventures on your cruise, a high-quality pair of water shoes will help protect your feet. Merrell Men's Wildwood Aerosport Water Shoes are light, comfortable and breathable. They also offer great traction on slippery rocks, shell-ridden beaches and the ship's decks.
The best men's cruise travel accessories
- Accessory storage: Keep your neckties crisp with this sturdy case for storage and travel. Or, fit all your formal night accouterments in this men's accessories storage and travel case .
- A compact on-the-go bag: The Bellroy Mini Sling Bag is great for roving both the ship and port with enough room to store your cellphone, ship pass and a few essentials such as lip balm, sunscreen and hand sanitizer.
- Shoe maintenance: These quality shoe bags keep your street and deck-worn shoes separate from your clothes. SneakErasers are a great travel accessory to buff out any scuff marks you may pick up on your journey.
- Staying hydrated: A reusable water bottle is essential on a cruise, especially while in port. The Hydro Flask water bottle is a favorite for its durable design and temperature retention. Cruise lines allow reusable bottles, though they must be empty when boarding.
- Express yourself: Stretch beyond your normal style — you're on a ship! Cruise life gives you the freedom to add some character and flair to your look, so pack some fun accessories like these nautical cuff links , colorful lapel pins or a flashy hat .

Bottom line
It's not "anything goes," but you'll find more flexibility than ever when it comes to cruise line dress codes. When in doubt, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when arriving for a seated dinner. Better to pack the tie and jacket and ditch them if no one else is wearing them than to risk awkward conversations with the crew or side-eye from other diners if you're not in compliance with the attire policy.
And if casual is the only way you wish to dress on vacation, know you can always go to the buffet or order room service, and you won't go hungry for want of khakis and a button-down shirt.

Whether you’re island hopping in Greece or sailing the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean, figuring out what to pack for a cruise vacation can be a daunting task, especially if you’ve never been on a cruise before. Cruising is unique because you may find yourself in a variety of situations and climates all in one vacation.
Packing for a cruise always involves taking more clothes than you would for a normal holiday. On most cruises there are certain dress codes for evening wear and different dress codes for different nights of your trip.

Make sure you plan out what to pack in your travel capsule wardrobe for a cruise vacation to be prepared for the diverse destinations, activities, and weather you may encounter. For most moderate to warm-weather itineraries, follow these packing tips for what to wear on a cruise, and you’ll be well prepared.
Tip: Want to pack light, use packing cubes to compress your clothing as shown in this video!

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime
During the day, the main thing is ensuring your cruise clothes are comfortable for relaxing on board or exploring ashore. Normal resort wear is perfectly acceptable during the day.
Cruise daytime wear is typically broken up into two categories:
- Sea days, where you’re on the boat all day
- Port stops, where you are exploring the latest destination at which you’ve arrived
Sea Day Outfit
On most cruises, you’ll have at least one sea day. This means you’ll be on board the ship all day while you sail to the next port.
Deep V-Neck Cover-Up Maxi Dress
Typically, these are the most relaxed and casual days. Be sure to pack a swimsuit and cover up or sarong. You’ll also need a hat, flip flops, and sunscreen if you plan to sit by the pool all day.
Quince 100% European Linen Shorts
No matter what you plan to do on your sea day, there’s no need to dress up. Shorts and a tank top or t-shirt are ideal if you plan to spend more time taking part in activities inside the ship, such as cooking classes or art auctions.
Mersea Classic Travel Wrap
Often the air conditioning is cranked up pretty high, so be sure to bring wrap sweater or kimono to keep from catching a chill.
Taken In Colombia when TFG editor took a two week cruise across the Atlantic Ocean!
Port Stop and Shore Excursion Outfit
For beach stops, you can repurpose the same outfit you wore around the pool on your sea day. But if you’re planning to stroll through town or take a ship-sanctioned shore excursion, you’ll want to wear something a with a little more coverage.
Loveappella Jersey Maxi Dress
A maxi dress is an ideal choice for many warm weather destinations. They’re comfortable and cool and perfect for a range of activities, from shopping to dining at a nice restaurant.
Quince 100% European Linen Pants
When planning what to wear on a cruise, consider if your excursion takes you off the beaten path. If so, you may opt for a pair of lightweight pants, joggers or shorts.
Skechers Go Walk 5 Womens Comfortable Sneakers
You’ll also need a sturdy pair of walking shoes, such as Skechers Go Walks or Birkenstocks , depending on your level of activity. It’s also a good idea to take a scarf or light sweater in case there’s a cool breeze.
Dress | Blouse | Maxi Dress | Necklace | Scarf 1 | Flats | Jeans | Earrings | Scarf 2 | Bag
What to Wear on a Cruise: Evenings
How much to dress up will depend on the type of cruise. These days, there’s no need to bring formalwear on most cruises, unless you want to. However, there are still some that have formal dinners.
Loveappella Faux Wrap Top
Some people also really enjoy dressing up. If that sounds like you, a cocktail dress and heels is about as dressy as most women get. But if you prefer to keep it casual, dark wash jeans and a pretty blouse are perfectly acceptable.
Take one or two white or solid-colored blouses and a variety of scarves and necklaces you can use to make different combinations each night. No one will even notice you’re wearing the same thing.
Yosi Samra Samara Ballet Flats
Pair your outfit with ballet flats or bejeweled sandals that are easy to pack and versatile. I like Yosi Samra because they come in lots of fun colors and patterns, fold up to fit better in your bag, and are super comfortable.
TFG Editor’s casual evening outfit: Drape Top ( Similar ) | Minnie Flats
Casual Dinner Outfit
On most ships for casual dinner it’s acceptable for ladies to wear a casual resort wear summer dress, pants or dark jeans and a nice top. You can even make it dressier by trading in jeans for trousers or adding a dressy scarf or necklace to your look.
TFG Editor’s formal evening outfit: Encircled Chrysalis Cardi
Formal Dinner Outfit
Cocktail dresses and full length gowns are appropriate cruise dresses. Formal pant or skirt suits can also be worn as acceptable cruise wear options when in dressier fabrics.
Blazer | Blouse | Tank | Tee | Dress 1 | Dress 2 | Dress 3 | Dress 4 | Jeans | Shorts | Skirt | Swimsuit | Sandals | Shoes | Flats | Cover up
Cruise Packing List
This cruise packing list is based on what I (Emma) would take for a week long cruise in a warm climate:
- Three sundresses that can be worn both for casual dinner and during the day
- Two pairs of shorts for daytime – one denim and one classic
- Three tank tops for daytime – solid colors
- One smart-casual skirt that can be worn for casual dinner and by day
- One long sleeve shirt of light material
- One tunic – perfect for relaxing by the pool on board or by the beach ashore
- One light jacket
- Two bathing suits
- A Little Black Dress – this never goes wrong for evening wear and would be perfect to for a smart-casual dinner
- One cocktail dress – cocktail dresses can be a little more fun than formal gowns but are still suitable for formal dinner.
- One formal gown – a full length gown in a solid color always looks beautiful. Opt for classic elegance and it’ll never go out of style.
- One pair of fancy heels – stick to a neutral color that will match multiple outfits
- One pair of nice sandals – perfect for smart-casual evenings
- One pair of tennis shoes or any comfortable walking shoes
- Complimentary jewelry and bag to match your formal outfits, as well as a practical bag for daytime
- Mascara , foundation , sunscreen and lipstick for a touch of glamour

How to Pack for Cruise
Once you’ve chosen all your cruise essentials, use packing cubes and other luggage organizers to organize and compress your clothing tightly to make the most of less space.

Do you have suggestions for our Alaskan cruise in July? Our first cruise, four ports for sightseeing day trips.
Hi Terry, check out this guide to help get you started for what to pack for Alaska, it was written by a fellow TFG reader. Have a wonderful time!

This is so helpful! Going on my Caribbean cruise in a few weeks, no idea how I can put everything in 1 luggage))) When it comes to dresses and formal dinner, how many dresses should I pack? Thanks
Hi Anna, A good place to start is to take a look at TFG’s Four Signature Packing Lists for ideas for a capsule wardrobe and how many clothing items you could pack – then depending on your preferences, you can choose more bottoms, fewer dresses, more tops – you can adjust the combination based on your needs: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/functional-and-fashion-packing-list/
Start with 10 items focusing on the absolute essentials – the core – and then decide if you need additional items or if you could do with less. If you carefully select your travel clothing choices and, for example, pack 6 tops and 4 bottoms, you’d have 24 ensembles on rotation. That’s 3 weeks’ worth of travel outfits with just 10 pieces of clothing!

I don’t know how I missed this when looking for help on my last cruise?!! I’d love to see packing lists for “over 50” women! 😉
I think the items would be the same, just the style might be different depending what you’re comfortable with. For example, the skinny pants might be swapped for a more classic cut and the short short demin shorts for a slightly longer pair. Or not, depending on what you like.
So thankful for this site! The advice and links are game changing for my travels.
Upcoming Mediterranean cruise leaving Barcelona April 1, preceded by 10 days in London then Paris, followed by 3 days in Venice. Trying so hard to visualize packing less, less, less…
Wow that’s quite the European adventure! This 10 Step Packing Guide should help 😉 https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-europe/
Susan, for many European cruises, the itineraries are pretty port intensive and formal nights may not be your thing. On our last we were lucky to get back and eat dinner in time before collapsing into bed to prep for the next day! A simple piece like a long skirt (maxi or midi) that can be dressed up or down with tops or accessories has always worked for me. It saves space to not have to pack a formal dress ( or suit for husband) you are only going to wear 2-3 times. Plus it doubles for coverage if you are going to places that require more modest dress.
Would love pictures of casual & smart casual. Not sure that I know the difference!
Casual wear, I’d define as jeans, tanks, shirts, sundresses, etc. While smart casual has a slightly more polished look. Think what you’d wear to casual Friday in a formal office. Slacks, blouses, put together but not quite business attire. This post: https://travelfashiongirl.com/business-trip-packing-list-for-minimalist-fashionistas/
In the bottom-most graphic, the casual look could even be considered smart casual, but the after-work cocktails look and work attire are definitely smart casual! Hope that helps Sandy!
Can you update the photos? I don’t see the photos any more. I love your site so so very much!
Thanks! I’ll have to write another post as the photos have been removed by their original source. Thanks for reading!
Thanks for showing pictures with your examples! It can get so tricky knowing what clothing falls into what categories.
great! glad to help 🙂
Hi i was just wondering where to find the outfit with the white top and green skirt. thanks 🙂

Shore Excursions and Port Adventures
Group tours vs. solo exploration.
When considering shore excursions and port adventures on your cruise as a solo traveler over 50, you might ponder the choice between joining group tours or embarking on solo explorations. Group tours can offer a structured and sociable way to discover new destinations, interact with fellow travelers, and benefit from the expertise of local guides. On the other hand, solo exploration allows you the freedom to set your own pace, delve deeper into specific interests, and savor moments of solitude amidst stunning landscapes.
While group tours can provide a sense of security and camaraderie, solo exploration grants you the autonomy to tailor your experiences to your preferences, ensuring a more personalized and introspective journey. Depending on your mood and the destination, you can alternate between group tours for shared experiences and solo adventures for quiet reflection, striking a perfect balance that suits your desired cruise experience.
Cultural and Historical Tours
Immersing yourself in cultural and historical tours during your cruise offers enriching opportunities to connect with the heritage and traditions of each port visited. Delve into the local culture by exploring historical landmarks, visiting museums, attending traditional performances, and sampling authentic cuisine. These tours provide insights into the unique history and customs of each destination, allowing you to deepen your understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.
By participating in cultural and historical tours, you’ll gain a profound sense of place, forging meaningful connections with the destinations you visit. Engaging with the local culture not only broadens your perspective but also fosters an enriching travel experience that transcends mere sightseeing. Whether you’re strolling through ancient ruins, admiring indigenous artistry, or tasting regional delicacies, each cultural and historical tour adds a colorful dimension to your cruise adventure, creating lasting memories that resonate long after you’ve disembarked.
Meeting Like-Minded Travelers
When you join a cruise as a single traveler over 50, meeting like-minded individuals can enhance your experience. Here are some ways to connect with fellow travelers on board:
Themed Cruises and Special Interest Groups
Engage in themed cruises that cater to your interests, such as music, food, or wellness. These specialized cruises gather individuals sharing the same passions, providing a perfect opportunity to bond over mutual hobbies. For instance, you might join a wine-tasting cruise or a jazz-themed voyage, ensuring you connect with people who appreciate similar activities.
Workshops and Continuing Education at Sea
Participate in workshops or educational programs offered on the cruise. These sessions not only enrich your knowledge but also allow you to interact with fellow travelers who have a similar thirst for learning. Whether it’s a language class, art workshop, or historical lecture, these activities create a conducive environment for forming connections with like-minded companions.

The 10 Best Loafers for Women Over 50 That Are Supportive and Comfortable: Options With Arch Support
You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort with these picks of the classic shoe
Share this:
If there’s one shoe we seem time and time again, year after year, in fall, it’s loafers. They’re the epitome of a timeless shoe, having been around for decades, worn by both women and men. They’re versatile, fashion-forward and are the perfect transition shoe for summer to fall or fall to winter. Loafers can easily be dressed up or down, and come in a wide variety of styles and colors. Better yet, they can be so comfortable — as long as you pick the right pair. To make it easy for you, we rounded up the best loafers for women over 50 that are comfortable, chic and will go with all your fall outfits.
Best Booties for Women Over 50 That Are Comfortable and Supportive
What to look for in loafers for women over 50.
Before you go searching for the best loafers, there’s a few factors you should keep in mind — especially if you’re a woman over 50. As we age, our feet age with us. This can lead to painful aches, tired and sore feet and even common foot issues like plantar fasciitis. Wearing the right shoes can not only help relieve foot pain, but can help prevent it from happening in the first place. Keep reading for a few key features to look for in loafers for women over 50.
Loafers with padding and cushioning
Adequate and supportive cushioning is a must for loafers, and just about any shoe. Shoes that are too thin feel like you’re walking on cardboard, and leave feet sore and tired. Foam footbeds are always a plus, or footbeds that have arch support or thick cushioning.
Loafers that fit properly
When it comes to any shoe with a heel backing, including loafers, you’ll want to ensure they’re not too tight or too big. Loafers that are too tight will lead to rubbing against the heel, which will cause painful blisters. Loafers that are too big or loose won’t feel secure, and cause your heel to slip out while walking.

Clarks Patent Leather Daiss 30 Trim Heeled Loafers
For a perfectly-polished option, turn to Clarks Patent Leather Daiss 30 Trim Heeled Loafers . They can dress up the most casual of outfits, and their neutral shade makes it easy to pair with anything. We also like that they have a slight heel to give you some height without pain.
Sam & Libby Brielle Slip On Loafer
Red is the color for fall — especially this deep, dark red on Sam & Libby Brielle Slip On Loafer . This hue is known on social media as “cherry cola red.” This pair can elevate any outfit, and with a neutral look, adds just the right amount of color. Plus, they have a padded insole and chic decorative hardware.
Dr. Scholl’s Nova Moc Slip On
For casual and comfortable loafers that you can easily slip on and run errands in, we like Dr. Scholl’s Nova Moc Slip On . They come in many different neutral shades, and they’re casual-chic. Huge bonuses: they’re antimicrobial and anti-odor, and have cushioning and arch support.
Sam Edelman Loraine Bit Loafer
Have you heard? Animal print is back and better than ever, and these zebra print loafers are here to prove it. Sam Edelman Loraine Bit Loafer adds playful pizzazz with every step, but comes in a neutral colorway that makes it easy to wear with anything. And, they have a padded leather insole.
Clarks Sarafyna Iris Black Leather Loafers
A classic black, leather loafer is a staple to add to your fall shoe collection, as it can just as easily be worn to the office as it can to dinner. Clarks is known for having comfortable, supportive shoes, and Clarks Sarafyna Iris Black Leather Loafer is no exception. They have a contour cushion footbed, so feet will be happy all day.
Naturalizer Desi Loafer
A platform loafer is so chic, and makes a bold statement while still looking timeless and classic. And we can’t get over the colorway of these Naturalizer Desi Loafers . They have Contour+ Comfort technology, so feet will feel pain-free, and are lightweight despite the chunky heel.
Franco Sarto Edith 2 Loafers
Pretty in pink applies to loafers too! Franco Sarto Edith 2 Loafers comes in the most gorgeous baby pink shade, which looks so rich and luxe against the brown heel. But not to fear, if pink isn’t your thing, they also have neutral shades available that pair with anything.
Cole Haan Lux Pinch Penny Loafers
For a fabric loafer rather than leather, we like Cole Haan Lux Pinch Penny Loafers . The fabric is high-quality and durable, and the style is chic and classic. Cole Haan is a stand-out when it comes to comfort, too, which earns them big bonus points in our book.
Aerosoles Ellis Tailored Loafer
Deal of the Day
We like the unique style of Aerosoles Ellis Tailored Loafer , which features a cinched, bow-like detail on top, giving it just a touch of elevated detail. Best yet, it has a memory foam footbed, so your feet will feel like they’re walking on clouds.
Vionic Uptown Slip On Loafer
Another casual-chic loafer, Vionic Uptown Slip On Loafer is easy to run errands in, go to lunch in or even wear to the office. They have an EVA foam cushioned insole, arch support, shock absorption and deep heel cup, making them a truly supportive loafer.

What I Wore on a 7 Day Caribbean Cruise (Cruise Outfits with Photos & Links)
Sharing is caring!
Are you going on a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise and wondering what cruise outfits to wear? Personally, I love some good cruise outfit inspiration!
I recently returned from a 7 day Caribbean cruise and thought I’d share some of the clothes I wore to give you a few cruise outfit ideas.
It had been almost 2 years since I’ve cruised I needed some new dresses, bathing suits and cover ups. The stores near me weren’t selling resort wear at this time of year, so this time I bought most of my new cruise outfits online.
In this post, I share photos of cruise wear I wore for embarkation, during the day on the ship and ports of call, and formal wear . Where possible, I’ve included links to the items in case you’d like to check them out.
This post contains affiliate links which means if you click and buy that I may make a commission, at no cost to you. Please see my disclosure policy for details.

My Cruise Outfits for a 7 Day Cruise
Embarkation day outfit.
On embarkation day I wore a navy blue and white stripe casual dress. It was super comfortable, and I figured I could wear it both during the day on our cruise as well as in the evening on a smart casual night .
I purchased this nautical stripe dress on Amazon in a size small and it was true to size.
Recommended: Navy blue and white stripe casual dress (check price & details on Amazon)
What I Wore During the Day on a Cruise
I don’t like to stress about what to wear on a cruise , especially Caribbean cruise itineraries. I like to pack comfortable sundresses and rompers that I can wear both on the cruise ship when hanging out on the lido deck, as well as in cruise ports of call.
These are some of the cruise outfits I wore.
Sleeveless Shorts Romper
I realize I so like navy stripe clothing, bags and accessories!! This cute shorts romper is also available in solid colors and I will probably purchase a couple more for summer. It’s very comfortable and has pockets!
I bought this outfit from Amazon in a size small and it was a nice loose fit.
Recommended: Navy & white stripe shorts romper (check price & color options on Amazon here)
Casual Sundress with Pockets
When I saw this dress on Amazon , I was pretty sure I had to have it for my cruise. It’s not only cute and very comfortable, but it has pockets!!
I bought this dress in size small and it was true to size. For reference, I’m 5, 2 and about 130 pounds.
Recommended: Sleeveless summer dress with pockets (verify price & style options here)
Cruise T-shirts and Shorts
While I live in sundresses on a cruise, I like to wear t-shirts and shorts for walks on the jogging track in the morning or even to head to the pool.
These 2 cruise t-shirts are from our Life Well Cruised collection, which is sold on Teespring.
Ilana: “I Live for Cruising” t-shirt (available in women’s, men’s and children’s sizes)
Ethan: “Currently on Cruise Mode” (available in mens & ladies styles)
Spaghetti Strap Sundress
This light sundress was perfect for the day we spent in St. Thomas shopping and walking around the cruise port. Since we weren’t going to the beach, I wore it with a beige small crossbody purse .
I’m short and love to wear comfortable wedge sandals that I can walk in easily. I always pack at least one pair of stylish neutral wedge style sandals to wear during the day and evening (seen in photo below).
Recommended: Light short sundress (similar to one in photo)
Tank Style Sundress
I wore this tank style loose beach dress on our shore excursion in beautiful St. Kitts. However, I also wear it on cruises as a bathing suit cover up when I head to the pool on sea days .
I’ve had this sundress for a few years, however I have seen similar styles in solid colors and patterns on Amazon , which I’ll share with you.
Recommended: Tank style beach dress & cover up (see style options & 9000+ Amazon reviews here)

What I Wore in the Evening on a Cruise
The evening dress code on our Princess cruise was smart casual for most nights. We also had 2 formal nights.
After not dressing up much the last couple of years, I was happy to dress up a little bit, although I chose outfits I was comfortable in.
Casual Midi Dress
This rose purple summer dress ended up being one of my favorites! Since I’m only 5.2 it’s a bit longer than a true mid length dress, but I still loved it. The straps are adjustable and it has a loose top, which makes it a flattering cruise outfit for women of any age and body type.
In the evening, since I had my ocean medallion to carry as well as lip gloss, reading glasses and Advil (I’m always prepared), I wore it a neutral cross body purse . However I wore it on one shoulder simply to go with my outfit.
Recommended: Strappy midi style casual sundress (see gorgeous color options here)
Casual Summer Dress High Low Style
I wore dresses most nights on our cruise. Although you don’t see it in the photos, I did bring a light sweater with me as well as a shawl. I like wearing sleeveless dresses, however the air conditioning in the dining room can be cool, so having a light sweater is a must.
I should note that clean, dark jeans are allowed in the main dining room . On most nights my husband wore khakis, but this evening he wore a jeans and a polo style shirt.
Recommended: High low dress (similar to dress in photo)
Strappy Casual Dress
Another dress I wore for the evening on our cruise was this light strappy mid length dress. I tried to choose clothing that would stay pretty wrinkle free and that I wouldn’t need to iron.
I wore tan sandal heels with most of my dresses in the evenings on my cruise.
Recommended: Similar style to the photo (see dress patterns & colors)
Floral Romper
I love comfortable romper jumpsuits , both the pants style and shorts. This floral romper is an old favorite that I still enjoy wearing on a cruise.
Recommended: Floral romper (similar style on Amazon)
What I Wore on Formal Night on My Cruise
On our 7 night cruise, we had 2 formal nights. So, for my Princess cruise, I packed 2 fancier dresses and my husband and son each packed one suit, with 2 different dress shirts. Don’t forget to pack dress shoes and any accessories you may need like an evening bag, clutch or jewelry.

Long Black Evening Cocktail Dress
It’s been a long time since I’ve worn a long cocktail dress for formal night on a cruise, but I really liked this style and was happy with it. It was one of my best Amazon finds, I must say!
For sizing, I ordered a size small and it fit snugly a few days into the cruise – Princess cruise food is good 😉
To be more comfortable, a size medium may have been a better option.
Recommended: Black long cocktail dress (see several color options & 5000+ Amazon reviews)
Off the Shoulder Cocktail Dress
I wish I had a better photo of this dress, as I just love the off the shoulder ruffle style and color. Is blue every cruiser’s favorite color or is it just me?
Recommended (similar dress): Off the shoulder ruffle style cocktail dress (see colors & Amazon reviews here)
Somehow we didn’t take any good photos this night, but did take a few selfies!
By the way, if your teenagers are wondering what to wear on a cruise , this post that can he helpful. It’s written by my son Ethan for his own blog, but I know it’s so helpful for young men and teenage boys.

Bathing Suits & Cover Ups
I brought 3 bathing suits on my cruise. 2 one piece bathing suits and one black bikini. I also found a great bathing suit cover up that doesn’t run big and is very flattering.
Here’s another look at the bathing suit cover up . It’s available in several colors, including black and white, so it will go with every bathing suit!
Recommended: Bathing suit lace style cover up (check price & amazon reviews here)
I also bought these high waisted bikini bottoms and to go with a bandeau top . I like to have at least one strapless bathing suit to avoid tan lines.
Here’s a one piece bathing suit I wore for our excursion to The Baths in Virgin Gorda.

Shoes I Wore on my Cruise
I tried not to over pack too much on this cruise. However, bringing shoes on my cruise that are both comfortable and cute is not something I cut back on.
I brought a pair of flat sandals in gold (a neutral), a pair of cream flip flops for the pool, tan wedge sandals for walking, tan sandal heels for evening, gold dress shoes for formal nights, white sneakers and a pair of water shoes for our beach excursions.
I probably could have cut back on one pair, but we were driving to the cruise port and I had room in my luggage .
Water Shoes
We brought water shoes for everyone in the family and they are a now a cruise essential that will remain on my Caribbean cruise packing list !
Recommended: Water shoes (lots of sizes & colors)
