If you come in the deep summer season you can still enjoy it because you can always sightsee early in the morning and go again at night when the sunsets. You will definitely need good sunscreen and a lot of liquids to drink with a nice hat on your head. Summer is a good time for people looking for good rates in accommodation and other services.

What is the dress code in Egypt?

Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.

How to get visa to visit Egypt?

You can get your visa when you arrive at Cairo Airport. It is an easy process for USA, UK, Canadian, Australian and European citizens. The visa is simply a stamp (like a mail or postage stamp) that you buy from the visa office, at the port of entry just before the immigration booth. The visa will cost you $25 US Dollars and after buying it; you just stick it on any empty page on your passport. Once you have bought your visa you then stand in line to get your passport stamped by the immigration officer. Day 1 – arrival in cairo for best of egypt tour.

When you arrive at the airport in Cairo for your Best of Egypt Tour, your assigned tour manager will meet you, and we will also have one of our drivers waiting outside to drive you to the hotel where you will be staying while you are in Cairo, the Egyptian capital. Once at the hotel, your tour manager will ensure a smooth check-in and then he will discuss your travel itinerary with you, and also confirm a pick-up time for the morning. After that, you will have the rest of the day for yourself.

DAY 2 – Giza Pyramids, Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo Tour

Enjoy your breakfast, and then your Egyptologist tour guide and one of our drivers will meet you at your hotel, and you will then be taken to see the Great Pyramids of Giza; the Sphinx, and the Valley Temple. Next, you will be transferred to the Egyptian Museum. In addition to all the other thousands of other ancient Egyptian artifacts which are on display, you will also be able to see all the artifacts which found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen in 1922.

Following your visit to the museum, you will then be taken to Coptic Cairo to see the Hanging Church of Cairo and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, after which you will head to Islamic Cairo where you will have some time to explore the famous Khan el Khalili Bazaar which has been open since the 14th century. This is the oldest and biggest bazaar in Egypt.

Once you have seen enough of the bazaar, your guide and our driver will then transfer you back to your hotel.

DAY 3 – Fly to Luxor, Cruise Embarkation and East Bank Tour

The next phase of your Best of Egypt Tour begins today, so at the confirmed time, which be shortly after breakfast, you will check-out from your hotel, and you will then be transferred to the airport where you will be boarding a short flight to Luxor. When you land in Luxor, you will once again be met by one of our tour representatives who will then escort to the area where you will be boarding a 5-Star Nile cruise ship for your cruise to Aswan.

After embarkation, enjoy a good lunch on board the ship, and then our Egyptologist tour guide will take you and a small group of our other clients to see two remarkable ancient attractions on Luxor’s West Bank. Visit the vast Karnak Temple Complex and the impressively well-preserved Luxor Temple, and then you will return to the ship.

Enjoy a nice relaxing dinner aboard the ship, and enjoy the first night of your cruise on the Nile at Luxor.

DAY 4 – Luxor West Bank Tour and Sail to Edfu

After breakfast today, our tour guide will once again escort you and your small group on a tour, this time to the West Bank. During this particular tour, you will visit three incredible timeless monuments: Valley of the Kings; the mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon.

Valley of the Kings is the ancient royal necropolis where the tomb of King Tutankhamen was discovered. There are also another 61 tombs at this site, so there is plenty to see before you move on to Hatshepsut’s magnificent rock-cut temple which was constructed during the 15th century BC. After exploring this temple, you will then visit the Colossi of Memnon on the way back to the cruise ship.

Once everyone is back on board the boat, it will begin sailing along the Nile to Edfu and lunch will be served. The remainder of the day is then yours to enjoy as you wish. End this day of your Best of Egypt Tour on the Nile at Edfu.

DAY 5 – Horus Temple, Kom Ombo Temple and Sail to Aswan

Today, after breakfast, you will leave the ship again with our tour guide, and you will be taken to see the Temple of Horus which is the best preserved ancient Egyptian temple ever discovered in Egypt. Following your trip to this temp, you will return to the ship and it will then sail to Kom Ombo where you will once again leave the ship to visit another astonishing ancient monument, the Kom Ombo Temple. This complex was originally dedicated to two different gods simultaneously: Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world, and Haeroris the falcon-headed god.

After your visit to this ancient temple, you will head back to the boat in time for lunch which will be served while it is sailing on the Nile to Aswan where you will spend this night of your Best of Egypt Tour on the water.

DAY 6 – Aswan Monuments Tour and Leisure Time

This morning your tour guide will take on another tour after breakfast, and you will visit the Aswan High Dam; the Unfinished Obelisk, and the magnificent ancient Temple of Philae. This remarkable ancient temple was moved from its original location to its current location in order to save it from the flooding of Lake Nasser when the Aswan High Dam was built.

Following your tour, you will return to your Nile cruise ship, and you will have the rest of the day to relax and unwind. Enjoy the final night of your Luxor to Aswan cruise in your cabin on the Nile at Aswan.

DAY 7 – Fly to Cairo and Free Time

Enjoy one last breakfast aboard the Nile cruise ship, and then it will be time for you to disembark so that we can get you to Aswan Airport in time for your flight back to Cairo. When you land in Cairo, your tour manager will once again meet you at the airport, and then escort you to the hotel where you will be spending the last night of your vacation in Egypt.

There are no tours or excursions scheduled for this day, so you will be free to enjoy the remainder of the day as you wish.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, and then at the agreed time, your tour manager will arrive, and he or she will then accompany you to Cairo International Airport in time for your flight out of Egypt. Spring (March–May) and autumn (Oct & Nov) are the best times to visit Egypt, when it’s hot but not debilitating so. In summer (June–Sept) the south and desert are ferociously hot and the pollution in Cairo is at its worst, with only the coast offering a respite from the heat. During this time, sightseeing is best limited to early morning or afternoon “Historical places are opening almost from 06:00 to 17:00”. In winter (Dec–Feb), most places are reasonably warm during the day, but chilly at night, while the desert can get very cold indeed. The Mediterranean Coast can be windy and wet in winter.

If weather is your primary concern, it is clear now that the best time to visit Egypt is during the northern hemisphere fall, winter or early spring (October to April), when temperatures are cooler but you are still guaranteed sun. To avoid the crowds at ancient sites like the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, try to avoid peak season (Christmas and New Year holidays). Tourism in Egypt is booming this time of the year so make sure you plan in advance.

To avoid roaming charges, it's probably best to buy a local SIM card in Egypt. Local SIM cards can be used on most unlocked phones from Europe, Asia and Australia and some unlocked phones from North America, but because Egypt's mobile phones run on a GSM network, a lot of cellphones from the US may not work. You'll still be able to access WI-FI when it's available, but a mobile plan may not be an appropriate way to get connected.

For most other travelers, picking up a local SIM is probably your least expensive course of action. Egypt has four main telecommunications providers – Orange, Vodafone, Etisalat and WE – and you can visit one of their kiosks or stores to get a SIM card. Here, they may ask for a passport and confirmation of address, then you will be able to get your mobile connected.

Many travelers like to arrive with some local money to pay for initial expenses. Egypt is a desert country that means the climate will be hot, sunny and dry.

Summer temperatures in southern cities like Luxor and Aswan can reach heights of 50°C (122°F) and don’t always drop at night. So, Light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. Just remember to cover up from your shoulders to below the knee.

Women are expected to dress more conservatively than men, for visits to mosques, female travelers should wear clothing that covers from ankle to elbow as well as decolletage and hair. Aside from mosque visits, you don’t have to cover your head. But being culturally sensitive by covering up is expected and respectful. The people of Egypt are well aware that not all people travelling are Muslim. If you want to swim, you can pack your regular swimsuit. Winters are generally mild, although temperatures can fall below 10°C (50°F) at night. If you’re travelling in winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. A light fleece or jacket should be sufficient to keep you warm on Egypt’s chillier nights specially at the end of December and January.

Tipping is customary for pretty much all services in Egypt. If you’re happy with the service provided by waiters, drivers and other workers, leaving a small tip is a good way to show your appreciation. For smaller purchases, rounding up the bill or not asking for any change is an appropriate way of leaving a tip. The amount you tip in Egypt will depend on where you are and what type of services you’re buying. As a general rule, expect to tip around 5-10% of your bill. Cotton textiles, the worldwide famous Egyptian cotton made products would be a good choice to buy in Egypt. Many shops, found in touristic and local markets and in large shopping malls sell pure cotton made shirts, trousers, and the famous traditional Galabeya, the Egyptian loose all in one robe. There are also some nice scarves, bed sheets, and bed covers sold almost everywhere in Egypt.

This morning, travel by minibus to Mt Nebo – the place where the prophet Moses is said to be buried and where he saw the 'Promised Land'. Check out the mosaics inside its fourth-century church. On a clear day, the views over the Dead Sea to Israel and the Palestinian Territories are spectacular. After, drive to the super salty Dead Sea – sitting well below sea level, this is the lowest point on earth, and you’ll float rather than swim due to the high salt count. The mud on the sea floor is said to have healing properties, so maybe lather up and enjoy Mother Nature’s spa. Continue to the crusader castle of Kerak, sitting on top of a cliff overlooking the town and valley below. Explore the seven-level fortress and learn the legends of 12th-century battles between Crusaders and Muslim armies, then continue to Petra for the night.

Your tour today includes stops at the Dead Sea, Mount Nebo and Kerak Castle, but keep in mind that entry fees are not included. When swimming at the Dead Sea, towels are available for hire.

Many travellers like to experience Petra by night, however, this is only available on certain days of the week. Feel free to ask your group leader for more information, and if this optional activity is available to you on your dates.

You’ll explore Petra today – the jewel of Jordan, the lost city of the Nabateans and one of the Seven Wonders of the World! Squeeze through a narrow path called the Siq until you reach the grand entrance of the Treasury. Gaze up at the intricate carvings and spend the afternoon exploring the site at your own pace. There’s the old Roman road, other temples and old tombs, as well as the rock-hewn amphitheatre. For those feeling more adventurous, take a challenging hike up a set of stairs to the smaller but no less impressive monastery, which takes about an hour. After arriving back at your accommodation, why not find a traditional bathhouse to rejuvenate after a day of incredible sightseeing.

One day's entrance fee to Petra is included in your trip. When entering Petra as a group, a complimentary horse ride is included in the ticket price from the entrance point down to the Siq. Intrepid Travel doesn't recommend that you take this option due to the safety and insurance liability involved.

This morning you’ll drive to Wadi Rum – a rugged, lunar-like landscape framed by huge sandstone mountains. Head on a half-day jeep safari, taking you through some unique desert scenery and uncover traces of ancient civilisations in the many carved inscriptions throughout the area, from pictographs to Thamudic, Nabataean and Arabic texts. The most enduring monuments in Wadi Rum are those carved by nature – natural rock bridges, towering sand dunes and scattered rocky peaks. Spend the night sleeping in a simple desert camp under a camel hair tent. Enjoy dinner cooked in an earthen oven by your Bedouin hosts and soak in the unforgettable surroundings.

Conditions are basic at the desert camp, but the hospitality of your hosts is legendary, and you'll treasure the memory of sleeping beneath the rugged landscape.

Tonight, a mattress and blankets are provided. Please be aware that while the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night and warm clothes and a sleeping bag are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months. Western-style toilet facilities are available.

This morning, leave Wadi Rum and make tracks for Nuweiba. You’ll drive to Aqaba, then bid your Jordan local leader farewell and transfer on a ferry bound for Taba. When you arrive, you’ll be met by your Egypt local leader and make your way to your accommodation in Nuweiba. Then enjoy a free afternoon to rest, relax or explore at your own pace.

In the unlikely event of the Aqaba to Taba passenger ferry being cancelled, you will travel as a foot passenger on the vehicle ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba. Please refer to the Transport section of your Essential Trip Information for more details.

At the Aqaba ferry terminal, you’ll pass security and pay a JOD10 departure tax, keeping the receipt to get stamped. On board, take your passport to the counter in the middle of the ferry where it will stay for the journey. When you arrive, an escort will take you and your passport to the arrival terminal, where you will pass immigration and then meet up with your Egypt group leader.

It's a short drive to the laidback resort area of Dahab – your base for the next two nights. Dahab, meaning 'gold' in Arabic, has gone from a Bedouin fishing village to a popular tourist town, thanks to the excellent conditions for activities like diving, windsurfing and rock climbing. However, the town hasn't lost its authenticity and lowkey appeal that’s attracted visitors since the 1970s. The rest of the day is free for you to wander through the cafes, find some fresh seafood or take on some snorkelling in the Red Sea. Dahab is well known for its drop-offs – spectacular coral reef shelves that plunge into the vast blue depths of the ocean. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants to sit back and enjoy good local food and some sheesha.

In the morning, why not strap on a mask and head to the Blue Hole for some snorkelling at one of the best diving spots in the world. The area gets its name from a submarine sinkhole about 94 m deep, with an arch in the coral reef down at 54 m – a challenge that’s only open to highly experienced technical divers. Snorkellers can enjoy one of the greatest spots in the Red Sea here. Float on the surface and look down into an endless world of blue, then make your way around to ‘the Bridge’, where the visibility is always great and the untouched coral swarms with all different types of colourful fish and marine life. After you’ve had your fill of snorkelling, return to Dahab for an evening feast at a waterside restaurant, or maybe head inland to Assalah, where local joints serve up plates of roast chicken and falafel with regional beer.

Today, you’ll experience the contrast between seaside Dahab and the wonderfully chaotic capital city of Cairo. Transfer to Sharm El Sheikh Airport and take the short flight to Cairo. Cairo is one of the great cities of antiquity and its history can be embodied by two of its imposing landmarks – the Pyramids of Giza and the Mosque of Mohammed Ali. Tonight, why not join your new travel mates for a celebratory dinner in the city – your local leader will know of some delicious places to eat.

There are no activities planned for the final day, and you can depart the accommodation at any time following check-out. While this trip doesn't include time to explore the sights of Cairo, it’s strongly recommended that you spend a few extra days to see more of what the city offers (one of the Seven Wonders of the World, anyone?). If you want to spend more time here, just speak to your booking agent beforehand.
