How Luggage Is Handled Before you depart, fill out and attach the luggage tags that were provided in your cruise documents. At the pier, porters will take your bags and deliver them to your stateroom - the tags note your information and stateroom location.

Boarding The Ship During embarkation, you'll first pass through metal detectors and proceed to the check in counter to present your identification and documents for all people in your party. It's a good idea to keep this paperwork in a folder for safe keeping and easy retrieval. You'll then receive ID cards, which will also act as your room key. You will also be asked to present a credit card to cover the extra charges (drinks, babysitting, spa treatments, etc) you amass during the cruise.

Once everyone is onboard, a mandatory safety drill will commence.

What To Do If You Miss The Departure You will need to find a way to meet up with the ship at its next port of arrival. If you purchased travel insurance or chose the cruise line's air & cruise package, your expenses to fly to meet the ship should be covered.

If you are not covered by either example mentioned above, you will have to cover the expenses to catch up to the ship.

In all cases, you can contact your travel advisor atCruise Holidays of Palm Springs for additional assistance.

Head to Palm Springs this winter for holly-jolly holiday spirit

Stacey Leasca

Think you can’t find holiday magic in the heart of the desert? Think again.

People flock to Palm Springs year-round for its beautiful landscapes, historic mid-century modern architecture, and colorful restaurant and bar scene. But what December travelers don’t expect is its massive amount of holiday cheer.

“Where else can you celebrate the holidays by the pool?” asks Lori Rodgers, a Palm Springs resident and creator of Black in Palm Springs . “Here, it’s not too cold to do anything.”

Rodgers in black-and-white outfit holding pink case next to a retro pink convertible

That “anything” includes marveling at the enormous holiday light displays at The Living Desert Zoo and Christmas shopping down Palm Canyon Drive. You can even get a taste of winter: You just have to travel 8,516 feet up. Which is easier than it sounds. “If you want snow, just ride up the Aerial Tram ,” Rodgers says. Or, head to the Palm Springs Air Museum to play in its 40 tons of snow (more on that below).

This is from The WeekEnder series: local insider guides for new destinations throughout Southern California, delivered to your inbox twice a month. Sign up here !

With all the nonstop festivities, Rodgers says, “you’re going to have to stay a full month.” She just wants to spread the joy of living in such an amazing town. “Here, I feel on top of the world,” she says. “There’s no place like my home. It just makes me so happy.”

In this edition of the WeekEnder, we’re taking you through Palm Springs’ must-see holiday attractions, along with restaurants and hotels to keep you fueled and rested.

— Stacey Leasca , SoCal’s Senior WeekEnder Guide

Editor’s Note: Stay up to date on weather alerts .

Holiday happenings

From lights to snow, the holiday spirit is on full display.

People walking under archway made of blue string lights at night

Celebrate with sparkling lights at WildLights

The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens ’ annual WildLights festival is a brilliant display of holiday joy and one of the country’s top zoo-lights attractions. See a 30-foot-tall holiday tree, lighted animal displays (also, actual animals), an impressive model train, and an Instagram-worthy tunnel of lights. Plus, there’s a carousel, photos with Santa, and a s’mores station. Runs November 22 to December 30.

Hit your best shot at Indian Wells Winterfest

During the entire month of December, the city of Indian Wells (part of Greater Palm Springs), invites visitors to celebrate the season with special winter events. Think holiday-music roller-skating sessions, igloo rentals, hotel and restaurant deals, and the popular Shots In The Night after-hours golf experience at the Indian Wells Golf Resort .

Holiday shop at VillageFest

This weekly outdoor gift market and street fair along Palm Canyon Drive offers the chance to shop small with local artwork, food, and vintage goods from over 180 vendors. In December, Santa and Mrs. Claus (and her cookies) make guest appearances. Every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Left: Large outdoor Christmas tree outside next to "Letters to Santa" box; Right: Inflatables of Santa in planes

Build a snowman at Snowtopia

Who says it can’t snow in the desert? For a week in December, visitors to Palm Springs can find a slice of the North Pole at the Palm Springs Air Museum . The main event is a playground with 40 tons of real snow, but there are also opportunities for kids to make crafts, hot chocolate, and s’mores. Open December 20–23, 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Bonus: Kids under 3 are free.

Enjoy a seasonal performance with Desert Theatreworks

Culture-loving travelers looking for holiday laughs will enjoy Desert Theatreworks ’ signature performance of Christmas with the Crawfords (Nov. 19 – Dec. 30). This campy Christmas comedy is based on the very real live radio broadcast from the Crawford family’s Brentwood mansion on Christmas Eve in 1949. It’s only slightly (ok, highly) exaggerated. Not in the mood for full-on camp? A play of the iconic holiday movie A Christmas Story runs Dec. 1–21.

Sip a festive cocktail at Truss & Twine

Truss & Twine ’s Christmas-themed pop-up bar Miracle serves holiday classics like mulled wine and hot buttered rum, along with popular cocktails turned festive like the Christmapolitan. The nostalgia-inducing decor makes for plenty of photo-ops, and the kitschy mugs are truly great souvenirs (and Christmas gifts). Runs Nov. 20 – Dec. 31.

Drive through the Magic of Lights

After last year’s super successful debut, the drive-through light extravaganza at Empire Polo Club has returned. This massive display features over two million bulbs lighting up drive-through tunnels, life-sized dinosaurs, and a 32-foot-tall holiday Barbie. Nov. 17 – Dec. 31.

Where to eat

Fuel up for holiday fun with Palm Springs classics.

Dimly lit restaurant with plants and hanging red lanterns

Get a caffeine fix at Ernest Coffee

This rustic, independent caf e keeps things simple by serving up Stumptown coffee and pastries. That’s pretty much it, which is the whole point: They’ve mastered their simple menu and arguably serve up the best coffee in town.

Have a fancy lunch at Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey

The eatery , which opened in 2018, quickly became a local and visitor favorite, which is why you need to make reservations, even for lunch. Try the spicy tuna tostadas, the bao buns filled with fried cauliflower, or a drink from the extensive whiskey menu. It’s on the pricier side but think of it as a present to yourself.

Left: Snap pea tempura dish; Right: Salad with croutons and sliced lemons

Go veg at Chef Tanya's Kitchen

Meat-eaters and vegetarians alike rave about Chef Tanya’s plant-based versions of classic dishes, like a bahn mi made with chili garlic tofu, pickled daikon, and spicy mayo or a panini topped with avocado, melted cheese, caramelized onions, and sriracha. But please, no matter what you order, add on an OhMyGatoTaco Salad—the chipotle ranch dressing is incredible.

Toast to the holidays at The Tropicale

The Tropicale ’s splashy pink building houses a restaurant and cocktail bar that’s perfect for happy hour. Share small plates, like Holy Mole Chicken Nachos and Southern Fried Buttermilk Chicken Strips & Ranch. Wash it down with over-the-top fruity cocktails like a Pink Grapefruit Paloma or a Mango Colada. Happy hour runs daily from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., plus all night on Wednesday.

Places to stay

The best places to nestle all snug in your bed.

Aerial view of rainbow-painted hotel with outdoor pool and mountains in the distance

For a spa getaway, The Good House

The Good House may be new, but it’s got classic Palm Springs vibes. The boutique property has just seven rooms, each decked out in sunny decor—woven lampshades, striped pillows, or yellow semi-circle murals—and featuring private patios. Guests can also soak in the hotel’s private hot springs or enjoy a spa treatment for a little R&R before the holiday rush.

For a relaxing stay, Drift Palm Springs

Outside, this hotel is pure ‘60s geometry, with white rectangular buildings and walls of windows. Inside, it’s all neutral tones, which pairs perfectly with the desert landscape. Take it all in from the hammock hanging from your own personal balcony. You can also chill at one of the cabanas by the pool, borrow free bikes or yoga mats, or have a bite at the chic bar and restaurant serving up Baja favorites, family style.

Left: Neutral-tone guest room two robes hanging on wall; Right: Outdoor table and view of unit's living room through windows

For total sanctuary, Sensei Porcupine Creek

Once a private estate, this massive adults-only wellness resort sits on 230 acres some guests call “paradise.” Rooms are luxurious, done up in a wash of beige- and cream-colored textiles, and feature views of either the desert or the resort’s massive golf courts. With golf, tennis, swimming, small-group fitness classes, outdoor massages, and more, it’s the perfect place for an end-of-year reset.

For a bright, affordable stay, The Saguaro Palm Springs

For more than a decade, The Saguaro has delighted visitors with its vibrant pool surrounded by bright yellow umbrellas and neon-orange day beds. The color continues into the guest rooms, with pops of pink over every bed. With its privileged location on East Palm Canyon Drive, it’s close to just about every attraction, and its starting rate of $87 per night doesn’t hurt either.

For a group stay, Blackhaus Hotel

Blackhaus ’s modern, apartment-like units make you feel like you’re staying in a high-end condo. The property’s 16 rooms are split into four buildings, which can be rented out for groups of all sizes. Each building has a living and kitchen area, plus an outdoor bocce ball court, BBQ, and fire pit. All four buildings share a central pool, making it easy to celebrate together.

Weekend plans. Shared.

More About Palm Springs

The Greater Palm Springs region of the Coachella Valley is made up of nine distinct cities: Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Indio, and Coachella. The area boasts more than 100 golf courses and dozens of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. To the east, you can visit Joshua Tree National Park or head west for Indian Canyons. Take in the full view of the mountain scenery on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which is the world’s largest rotating tramcar. The nightlife is also hot here, from live theater and music to dance clubs and themed bars. Then, find your own personal oasis, by soaking in the hot springs water that the area was named for, and feel your cares melt away with a spa treatment. With an abundance of sunny days and warm weather, this is a year-round destination for fun and relaxation.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
  • For complete and current safety and security information, including travelers' tips, public announcements, travel advisories and more, please visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov.
