Your Guide to Hiking in the Philippines

Lake Mapanuepe

Lake Mapanuepe: The Hidden Paradise of Zambales

Lake Mapanuepe is one of the newest tourist destinations in the Zambales province which is situated in Barangay Aglao, San Marcelino municipality. Because of its gaining popularity among the local visitors, it got featured on KMJS or Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho which is one of the most popular TV shows in the Philippines during the weekend. Many local tourists called this Lake Mapanuepe the New Zealand of the Zambales because the view is very akin to those vast green pastures and lush green grass found in New Zealand. In addition, the area is surrounded by hills and towering pine trees. Lake Mapanuepe has a size of more than 500 hectares and a depth of 20 meters.

According to its past history, Lake Mapanuepe was formed from the destructive explosion of Mt. Pinatubo in the year 1991. The lahar coming from the volcanic eruption blocks all exit points of water going down the Mapanuepe Valley in Barangay Aglao and Barangay Buhawen as well as the river. As a result, the rising waters submerged the Mapanuepe Valley and Lake Mapanuepe comes into existence. It was said that all structures in the two barangays were sunk during the violent eruption and only the sunken Bojaoen church’s huge metal cross can be seen in the middle of the lake.

As of today, Lake Mapanuepe is one of the emerging tourist spots in Zambales province. It is a perfect place for family outings and lazy camping. However, going there will not be easy but it’s totally worth it. The rough road trail going there is around 4 to 5 kilometers starting from the Zambales Mega Dike. Even so, if you are looking for a perfect place to relax then Lake Mapanuepe is a special place for you because you don’t need to trek it’s just chill camping.

Lake Mapanuepe

Name: Lake Mapanuepe Location: Barangay Aglao, San Marcelino, Zambales, Philippines Features: a wonderful view of the freshwater lake and nearby hills

My trip to Lake Mapanuepe

In the past days, I saw in the travel Facebook group the stunning beauty of Lake Mapanuepe. For this reason, I added Lake Mapanuepe to my travel bucket list and started searching online for the organized tour that I will be joining since I am a solo joiner. It was Wednesday when I finally finished searching and joined the organized tour. The organizer gave me the itinerary and the expenses. The event fee is 2500 pesos. As a result, I immediately went to the local bank and deposited the required amount of downpayment. The tour to Lake Mapanuepe is scheduled on Saturday and Sunday.

It was April 15 Friday evening when I left my house and went to our assembly place at the Mall of Asia parking lot to meet with the rest of the group. Because we are not complete yet in our assembly place, we have to wait for the other members. So I bought some burgers and cold drinks at the fast-food restaurant near the parking lot. At 11:20 pm we are now complete and our private van is heading to our main destination which is Lake Mapanuepe.

I wanted to sleep in the van but the soft drinks I had drank earlier made it hard for me to sleep. As a result, I stayed awake all the time on the road trip to Zambales. We arrived at Zambales port at 4:30 am and our group registered. Afterward, we have our boat ride going to the campsite of Lake Mapanuepe. While having a boat ride, I noticed that the lake is so wide and the place is so tranquil.

A few minutes later, we arrived at the campsite and we started setting up our tent and hammock near Lake Mapanuepe. After that, we explored the magnificent and peaceful place. In my point of view, I feel like I’m in the country of New Zealand because it has a good ambiance, vast green landscape, chill camping, birds chirping in the trees, cows grazing nearby, bright blue sky from above, wind whistling through trees and million-dollar views of the freshwater lake and hills nearby.

Camping site beside Lake Mapanuepe

Without a doubt, it’s a good morning for all of us. For this reason, I thank Lord for another day of witnessing his beautiful creations. Moreover, it is a perfect place for photoshoots, videography, and connecting with mother nature. It is indeed the New Zealand of the Philippines. As of this writing, Lake Mapanuepe is the best camping site I have ever seen and visited.

We enjoy the magical scenery with the view of the clear lake and we share thoughts about this place. One member of the group told us that she never thought we have this beautiful place in Zambales. For this reason, she will come back to Lake Mapanuepe together with her family at the end of this year. In my opinion, the natural beauty of nature, the breathtaking view, and the emerald water of Lake Mapanuepe which is so enticing make me also come back to this place.

New Zealand of the Philippines

We have our group lunch at 11:15 am. The meals prepared by our tour organizer are so yummy and delicious. As a result, at the end of our group lunch, we are so full that we wanted to sleep in our hammock and tent after that. Our group lies down under the shade of the tree while enjoying the delightful views all around the place. At 1 pm, we explore the place again and I notice that the trees here are so different compared to the others. The casuarinas and pine trees are a sign of freshwater nearby. Therefore, I said to myself that there are a lot of beautiful tourist spots in the Philippines waiting to be explored.

According to our tour guide, only the concrete part of the roof of a church serves as a memorial that there were once two barangays (Aglao and Buhawen) in the area now called Lake Mapanuepe. A 69-year-old Jing Valdez, a photographer, was able to keep the photos when the two barangays could still be seen in the area. He also took a picture of the two barangays slowly being swallowed by the water.

The camping area of Lake Mapanuepe

We have our dinner at 6 pm. The hosted meal is so satisfying. Then at 8 pm, our group have a bonfire and I can see with my own two eyes the clear night sky filled with innumerable stars. I wish I can take a closer picture of the night sky but my phone is not good enough to take awesome photos. From my perspective, this is the best overnight camping experience with strangers I’ve ever had in my life. We stay awake till 10:30 pm and at 11 pm we have a good sleep.

At 5:45 am (the next day), I woke up to a cold temperature and I saw our tour organizer preparing our breakfast. Then at 6:30 am, I witness one of the magical sunrise views. The light coming from the sun passes through the grazing ground, pine trees, and the clear water of Lake Mapanuepe. For this reason, I take a lot of pictures as a souvenir of this majestic place. Then I said to myself if this place is fully developed it will be a nice tourist spot both for locals and international travelers.

dawn sky view

After having our breakfast and enjoying the moments at the camping site, we started to pack up our things. We leave the campsite at 10:30 am and we have a boat ride going back to the port. After arriving at the port, our van headed to our side trip in Zambales but before that, we have our lunch at a small restaurant beside the local highway. At 3 pm, after exploring our side trip place in Zambales, we go inside the van, and the van headed back to Manila.

We arrived at Quezon City around 6:45 pm. We bid goodbye to each other and I rode a train and a jeep going back to my house. At 8 pm, I finally arrived at my house and I thanked God for his guidance and unspeakable gift as I’m totally speechless when I saw Lake Mapanuepe. Also kudos to our tour organizer for organizing this amazing overnight trip and to our local guide. The trip was all worth it. I definitely enjoy the camping moments and breathtaking scenery. Moreover, I will definitely come back to this place in the near future. God willing.

To the people of Zambales, I want to thank you for sharing with us the hidden gem of Zambales. Overall my trip to Lake Mapanuepe sums up this simple quote “Hold on to whatever keeps you happy.”

How to Go to Lake Mapanuepe

  • From Cubao, Quezon City, ride a Victory Liner bus bound to Zambales. Tell the bus driver and conductor to drop you off at Olongapo City, Zambales.
  • Then from Olongapo City, ride a jeep going to the municipality of San Marcelino, Zambales.
  • From San Marcelino, ride a jeep or tricycle going to Barangay Aglao. You may register at the barangay hall of Aglao and leave some donations there.

By private vehicle Open your Waze app and pin the Mapanuepe Lake or Lake Mapanuepe view deck. From San Marcelino, Zambales pin Barangay Aglao. Note : the signal there is so weak so better ask the locals there to avoid getting lost. Lake Mapanuepe is just three hours via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) – Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) route.

  • The entrance fee for a day tour is 20 pesos.
  • 50 pesos per head for an environmental fee if overnight.

Reminders and Tips:

  • If you wish to lessen your expenses, I highly recommend getting an organized packaged tour when you plan to visit Lake Mapanuepe. Included in the Lake Mapanuepe overnight package tour is a round trip private rented van from Manila going to Zambales and vice versa, a roundtrip boat ride from the port to the campsite, a life vest, entrance fee, tour guide fee, environmental fee, camping site fee, open cottage, beach tent sharing and three hosted meals (first-day lunch and dinner, the second day are breakfast). On the other hand, excluded from the overnight package tour are other personal expenses and boat hopping.
  • If you have a small car you will be able to get there but a 4×4 pick-up truck or SUV is preferable. The travel time from Metro Manila going to Lake Mapanuepe is approximately three to four hours.
  • There are boats near the view deck that you can rent. Just register first and pay. The boat ride will last only for five minutes to ten minutes. Nevertheless, make sure to wear your life vest at all times for safety purposes.
  • There is no electricity and no cellphone signal beside Lake Mapanuepe so better prepare yourself and the things you will need to bring. On the other hand, a small sari-sari store can be found and you can order bottled water.
  • Take Phase 2 for a better sunset view. Overnight camping at Lake Mapanuepe is highly advised to better enjoy the serenity of the place. Moreover, if you do overnight camping, please be reminded that you can bring your own tent or you can rent at the barangay hall at an affordable price.
  • For booking and contact information, just search Mapanuepe Lake Aglao on Facebook or you can message Annabelle at https://www.facebook.com/annabelle.joaquin.777. Also, you can contact John Alvin Romualdo at 09567154878.
  • The registration will be done at Aglao barangay hall.
  • You can bring and play with your pet but much better if you bring a leash. A wide grassy land is a perfect place for your pet buddy.
  • Wear a helmet if you take the Lahar-filled road by a motor.
  • There is a portion of the lake where you can swim, so swim at your own risk. Ask your guide about that. Also, there is a newly built paid comfort room near the camping site.
  • Be disciplined. Have a sense of preservation and conservation. Apply the basic camping rule which is to leave no trace. Don’t leave a piece of candy plastic or a cigarette butt.
  • Add Lake Mapanuepe to your bucket list now before it became overcrowded and the most popular spot in Zambales.
  • Above all, Lake Mapanuepe is a hidden paradise and must be protected so don’t leave any trash or garbage along the way.

There you have it, nature lover people. Grab your friends and take vacations once in a while because you can always make money but you cannot always make memories. Overall, I wish this travel guide to Lake Mapanuepe has been advantageous to you and encourage you to visit this hidden gem in Zambales. If you have any questions, violent reactions, or comments kindly leave them below. God bless and stay safe.

POTIPOT ISLAND: Budget Travel Guide + Itinerary To The Small But Wonderful Jewel Of Zambales

The Philippines has one too many islands and you can never go wrong whichever it is you would choose to explore. In our time where travel is the in-thing and almost everyone wants to fulfill their wander-list/lust, finding that one beautiful spot where you can quietly commune with nature and simply relax is too difficult. We now live in a world where information travels faster than the speed of light that once an unfamiliar destination surprisingly pops up on Facebook, we’re only counting days before it gets too crowded. While some people appreciates seeing new faces to befriend with, there are those people like us who prefer peace and quiet and all the good things that come along with it. So amidst tons of tempting new destinations surfacing the internet, we instead chose to scour through the old and all-time favorites some people may have forgotten but definitely worth rediscovering. And we thought one of our best options is Potipot Island in Zambales.

Zambales is known for its famous coves Anawangin, Nagsasa and all others but not much of its islands. In fact many of these islands are still pure and unknown to most of us. Among the numerous islands scattered along the coastal waters of Zambales is Potipot, a not so new destination I bet you’ve heard about it before that it rings a bell in the far corner of your memory. This island is so small you can explore the entirety of it in less than an hour. Its shoreline covered in sugary white sand engulfed by crystal turquoise water is such an alluring beauty to behold. Surrounding the islands are the verdant mountains of Zambales that serves as a stunning backdrop to an equally beautiful subject.

Despite the threat of commercialization, it’s amazing to see that over the years Potipot Island has gone through so little development. It is to this date still in its natural form. Electricity is still powered by generators. Water is still sourced from deep wells. No fancy hotels around but only native cottages to get visitors through the night. And that’s how it supposed to be. We already have one to many big cities to enjoy the comfort of this modern world. It wouldn’t hurt if we spare these islands the serenity they deserve.

WHY GO TO POTIPOT ISLAND?

  • Potipot Island boasts of a stunning beach with clear turquoise water and white sandy shores of sugary sands and rough coral stones.
  • It is one of the few islands which is devoid of any signs of commercialization.
  • It offers a beautiful and relaxing view of Zambales’ formidable mountain ranges.
  • It is not too crowded so you can enjoy a moment by the beach without nuisance. Update:  Potipot Island has become very popular recently that you can only enjoy the island and have it all to yourself during weekdays and non-peak months (July-February).
  • It’s easy to get to and is really affordable.
  • If you are looking for some peace and quiet then this is definitely your much sought trip this weekend.

HOW TO ENJOY POTIPOT ISLAND?

  • Photo Ops. The island is so stunning you’ll have fun exploring while snapping it and yourselves some photos.
  • Star Gazing. Enjoy a bottle of tequila by the shore under the million stars. If you are feeling more patient then you might as well wait for the milkyway to appear.
  • Play Cards. Nothing beats playing cards to kill those boring awkward moments. Show off your skills in poker or tong-its or whatever floats your boat.
  • Beach Volleyball. Bring out your inner Alyssa Valdez and spike your way to a fun moment at the beach. Of course, you’ll need to bring your own volleyball.
  • Snorkel. Dive into the water and discover what Potipot Island can offer.
  • Sunset Viewing. Witness one of the most beautiful sunsets. Make sure to secure you the best spot to snap your best shots.
  • Pay the nearby Hermana Menor Island a visit. You can arrange a clubbed trip to Hermana Menor and Potipot Islands for P1500/boat for a group of 6 and P300-500/person for a group of 10-20. To arrange your trip, I highly recommend Rapoy Hermogino – 09106147887 | 09158018101.

UPDATE APRIL 2018: Potipot Island is a lot livelier now. They now offer kayaking and other recreation to visitors. Kayak rental is P300/hour

Important note before your travel.

  • Bring your own food and water since those sold in the island are kind of expensive.
  • There’s a public market in Uacon where you can buy your ration but note that it sells limited goods.
  • Kitchen and grilling area is available.
  • Electricity is only available during the night but you may charge your phones and gadgets in one of the stores in the island for P50.
  • The 2-way boat rental fee is P400  and is good for 5-6 people.
  • Entrance Fee is P500 for overnight stay. No additional charge for pitching tents.
  • Cottages are available for rent at a rate of P2500.
  • Please be considerate of other visitors. Don’t be too loud especially in the wee hours.
  • Dispose your garbage properly. As much as possible, put your food and water in reusable containers. Avoid bringing plastics you will need to discard at the end of your tour.
  • Reservation is not necessary but is an advantage especially in high season.

HOW TO GO THERE

  • Commute – From Caloocan Station, ride a Victory Liner Bus to Sta. Cruz (7hrs ; P450) . Alight in Uacon, town of Candelaria just in front of Petron Station. From there, ride a tricycle to the port (15 minutes ; P15) . Just tell the trike driver you are going to Potipot Island. Once at the port, hire a boat to take you to Potipot Island (15min ; P400/boat)
  • Private – Drive to NLEX continuing to  Rizal Hwy in Subic Bay Freeport Zone . Take the exit toward  Olongapo City from NLEX. Follow Olongapo – Bugallon Rd and Zambales – Pangasinan Rd to Uacon in  Candelaria. Once in Uacon, ask the locals for further direction to the port or better yet secure a contact person who can assist you when you’re there.

View of Capones Island in Zambales

The island was previously known as “Isla de Gran Capon” during the Spanish era. It’s covered in rocks on one end and white sand on the other. It’s a great attraction for surfers and divers alike.

The island is legendary for its lighthouse which was built in 1890, with Filipino’s bare hands. The famous landmark sits atop the sharp cliff. The tower is perfect for photoshoots since it displays an inviting cinematic scene.

Crystal Beach Resort offers a heavenly stay where nature and comfort is wrapped into one. It is conveniently located in San Narciso, Zambales. It’s a favorite hangout place for thrill-seekers, especially for surfing enthusiasts and beginners who yearn to ride big waves near the metro.

The resort offers a variety of lodging options, from air-conditioned rooms to glamping tents. Their rooms should be lauded for how it embraces its native roots for it exhibits primitive Nipa hut design elements.

They’re also a pet-friendly resort! So feel free to bring your furry friend/s with you for your trip to Zambales.

Inflatables area at Inflatable Island in Zambales

Get ready to get wet at this floating theme park found in Subic Bay, Zambales. Inflatable Island has grown even massive since it opened in 2017. It now stretches to the size of 10 whole basketball courts combined side by side. Being a one-of-a-kind attraction that’s just crazy fun, it’s now become a favorite Zambales tourist spot.

Inflatable Island is essentially a big playground set above the open sea in Subic built for kids and kids-at-heart. From shaky bridges to the crowd favorite Tarzan swing, you’ll never run out of obstacles here. The biggest attraction yet? The gigantic unicorn that is just cuteness overload!

And when you feel tired or in need of a break, you can plop down at the island’s pink or yellow bean bags. If you prefer to lay rest completely, they have a Sunflower Lounge area complete with pillows and a comfy mattress. Book an Inflatable Island Zambales Beach Resort Day Tour to experience the fun!

6. Hike Mt. Pinatubo

Trekking the trail of Mt. Pinatubo

Mt. Pinatubo is one of the top attractions in Central Luzon, covering not just Zambales but Pampanga and Tarlac as well. This active volcano can be explored by trekking and by riding 4x4 vehicles along its bumpy lahar roads.

  • Book a Mount Pinatubo tour

The trek and 4x4 ride will be worth it once you get to the crater lake, with its water varying in colors depending on the season, from blue-green to a deep blue.

Nagsasa, Anawangin, and Talisayen all come from one fabric, sprinkled by the same volcanic ash. This humble cove in Zambales is the lesser-known stepsister of Nagsasa and Anawangin Cove, and often gets overlooked.

What sets Talisayen apart from its stepsisters is its peaceful, quiet, and more laidback atmosphere. This is one of the reasons why it appeals to a different type of travelers, often to those who are more into making their own trail and adventures.

Other than swimming and sunbathing, this cove serves as an excellent spot for stargazing. While there, challenge your friends to spot the brightest stars and constellations. It’s a fun way to spend the night!

Camara Island is just 10-20 minutes off Pundaquit. It’s a rocky spot with a short stretch of sand that serves as a fantastic backdrop for taking pictures.

It’s a small island that’s no bigger than the size of a football field. It may be humble in size, but it has an astonishing view of Pundaquit and its scenic mountains.

Overnight camping here is prohibited, and drinking isn’t allowed. Since it’s a relatively small island, the most exciting activity you can do here is snorkeling. The island is perfect as the first stop to your island-hopping tour in Zambales.

People riding horses in El Kabayo Stables

El Kabayo is arguably the best place to learn and go horseback riding in the country. The establishment is tucked in Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Zambales and is home to healthy and friendly horses.

The ranch is simply captivating with its well-kept lawns, huge ground space, and country-style building. The stables are supervised by Wildlife In Need, a non-government organization that specializes in animal care and welfare.

All proceeds acquired from the riding activities go straight to the care and well-being of the beautiful horses. You can avail of horseback riding lessons and a guided ride through the lush forest of El Kabayo falls.

Whether you’re keen for equestrian or simply want to hang out with horses, feel free to escape on horseback in El Kabayo Stables.

Zambales is home to the Philippine Carabao Mango. Pick and savor on some sweet mangoes at Rosa Farms. It’s a 12.5-hectare mango orchard situated along the National Highway in San Marcelino-San Antonio Boundary, Zambales.

The mangoes, the herb garden, the swing, the country store, and the café - there’s so much goodness offered here. The farm has a “Pick & Pay” program, which lets guests pick mangoes straight from the trees. It’s perfect for mango-hungry kids and adults!

Go on a side trip and experience Zambales’ historical side with the beloved former Philippine President, Ramon Magsaysay’s ancestral house, in the town of Castillejos. The house was restored and converted into a museum back in 1990.

The National Historical Institute reconstructed and renovated it in 1999 after it was severely destroyed by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991.

The modest yet charming two-level structure contains memorabilia and some personal remembrance about the former president, such as pictures and medals.

Some of Ramon Magsaysay’s sharp Barong Tagalogs are displayed in the historical site. You can also find his vintage Presidential car, the Willy Jeep, in the museum.

You should pay a quick trip here to find more about why Ramon Magsaysay was well admired and respected by the people.

Established in 2000, Botolan Wildlife Farm is a highly rated wildlife sanctuary sitting in the heart of Botolan, Zambales. It’s a family-run sanctuary established in 2000, and is all funded and maintained by the generous family.

The animal ranch stretches to a 55,000-sqm area. The place serves as a habitat for a wide range of exotic animals and plants around the world.

You’ll find rare species of animals there, like the Brahminy Kite (a now endangered bird), adorable owls, colorful birds, the Philippines’ Brown Deer, and a Siberian tiger among others.
