Nature, culture and adventure: 9 of the best experiences in South Africa

Safari at sunrise to spot the Big Five. Look down at Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain. Taste a bunny chow. Discover culture, history and tradition. Here’s the best things to do in South Africa…

1. Discover the wild side on safari

Into the wild: Safari and sands in South Africa with TUI Tours

Safari in South Africa with TUI Tours (TUI)

Huge in both variety and size, South Africa’s biggest draw is undoubtedly it’s wildlife. Head to Hluhluwe Game Reserve – the country’s oldest safari park and one of the many places you can visit with TUI Tours – to tick off the Big Five. Drive up and down the rolling landscape, while looking out over the vast stretch of green grassland, only broken by the famous mammals grazing through it. Particularly important to this park is the white rhino as huge efforts have been made by the park to conserve this endangered animal.

Another popular place for Big Five-focused safaris is Kruger National Park. Wake early to see the park doused in an orangery red glow from sky to ground. Shortly after dawn, the sought-after residents start to wake, and you’ll likely catch them on their morning prowl. Choose a game drive near the Phalaborwa side of nearly two-million-hectare Kruger to enjoy sightings of wobbly-legged giraffes, zebra and antelope.

Around two hours north of Johannesburg lies untamed and wild Waterberg, a perfect place for an African bush experience that will make you feel like you’re in the Lion King. Drive over diverse landscapes of rocky mountains, thick grasslands, dusty roads and vast wetlands to see a wide variety of Africa’s life. A visit to Waterberg’s Entabeni Rehabilitation Wildlife Centre will give you an insight into the significant work being done to help care for, and up the numbers of, elusive white lions.

As well as its myriad mammals, South Africa boasts a brilliant birdlife. Turn your eyes to the skies in Dundee’s Ithala Game reserve, where you can visit with TUI Tours, to see some of more than 3,000 species of birds brighten the horizon. The larger of these include black eagles, ostriches and lappet faced and white-backed vultures.

An alternative birdwatching experience can be had over in Cape Town, where a colony of African penguins crowd the sands of Boulders Beach and bodysurf in the waves.

2. Surround yourself with natural beauty

Aerial view of iSimangaliso Wetland Park (Shutterstock)

Although people focus on its inhabitants, the landscapes of South Africa’s National Park will make life-lasting memories in and of themselves. iSimangaliso Wetland Park, for instance, is a place of outstanding natural beauty, where green-doused mountains blur into the long stretches of golden sand at their feet, contrasting with electric blue lakes and the ocean. Walk the grasslands, looking out for elephants stomping through before snorkelling in the waters of postcard-perfect Cape Vidal beach.

Take the scenic road to Krueger National Park by following the Panorama Route with TUI Tours which offers up new gawp-worthy natural landscapes at every turn. Look down from Blyde River Canyon – the third largest in the world – to see swirls of cloud seemingly fallen from the sky that cling around the mossy outposts jutting out of the river. Climb even higher to God’s Window, where you can perch precariously on the edge of a one thousand metre drop, craggy mountains and trickling waterfalls sprawling out around your feet.

Nearby lies Bourke’s Luck Potholes, where you can look down the vertical edges of the striped cliffs at the spiral-shaped holes cut into the rock at the bottom, where the convergence of two rivers have been tirelessly eroding the stone for centuries to create the stunning piece of natural art. And this doesn’t even scratch the surface of the diverse landscapes on display along this extraordinary route.

Royal Natal National Park (Shutterstock)

Combine incredible views of natural scenery with trekking. A hike through Royal Natal National Park offers endless eyefuls of the famous Drakensberg Mountains. Alternatively, Tsitsikamma National Park offers an ever-changing ramble from the golden beach of Sandy Bay, through a thick forest and to the mouth of the Storms River, where you can taste the salt in the air.

3. See South Africa from the water

Spot submerged hippos in both St Lucia Lake and the Olifants River (Dreamstime)

The Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and thousands of lakes and rivers splashed across the surface of South Africa makes it a great country to explore from the water. For wildlife watching opportunities, head to St Lucia Lake in iSimangaliso Wetland Park. From this 80km long and 23km wide lake, you’ll see pink flamingos skimming the surface of the water, paddling pelicans, sunbathing crocodiles and just the eyes of hippos visible above the depths.

An alternative safari cruise can be enjoyed by bobbing over the mirror-like surface of the Olifants River. Look out for hippos stomping up the banks, crocodiles and elephants dousing themselves in the cooling water.

Boat trips can also be taken from Cape Town to the nearby Seal Island, where you can enjoy the sight of 75,000 Cape fur seals. There’s so many that the entire island looks like its been encrusted with shiny black stones. Visit Seal Island in winter to spot the Great White Sharks who come here to hunt.

Visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned (Shutterstock)

Swap wildlife for history by visiting Robben island, also off the coast of Cape Town which was previously used as a prison and where Nelson Mandela was held for several years.

4. Visit Cape Town

south africa safari holidays tui

Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain (Shutterstock)

south africa safari holidays tui

The Cape of Good Hope is the most South West point of Africa (Shutterstock)

Cape Town is a city defined by its rugged wilderness which reaches its peak at the flat top of the 600-million-year-old Table Mountain. Slowly sway 3,000ft up to the top in a cable car and watch out of the window as the city below you is transformed into a toy town and the mountain shifts to eye level. From the top you’ll see the Atlantic Ocean licking the golden beaches and the entire city in miniature below, like a detailed map.

Once back at the bottom, travel the coast-side Chapman’s Peak Drive which will lead you to the Cape of Good Hope – the most South West point of the African continent. From here, watch the drama of the waves smashing into the weather-beaten rock unfold. Another alternative view on the skyline-dominating rock faces can be enjoyed at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Head 13km out of the city centre to walk the park’s canopy walk, pausing to admire the 2,500 species of plant on display.

Visit the District City Museum to appreciate the city’s sad history. This former Methodist church plays homage to the multiracial community of this area that was destroyed during apartheid. More history can be soaked up along the V&A Waterfront. Stop for dinner here at one of the many seafood restaurants and enjoy one last eyeful of the giant lump of rock glowing under the falling sun.

The botanical garden at the Dias Museum Complex (Shutterstock)

Mossel Bay, around four hours from Cape Town is a worthy place to stop en route. It’s home to a tree which served as South Africa’s first post office. The Dias Museum Complex holds the history of the European sailors who journeyed here in the 15 th century.

5. Visit Durban

Spices on display at Durban’s Victoria Street Market (Dreamstime)

Durban is South Africa at its most hip and cosmopolitan. The largest Indian community outside of India itself lives here, so expect an eclectic culture. The city centre is awash with myriad markets where you can find anything from Indian-inspired jewellery and spices at Victoria Street Market to traditional Zulu food such as slow boiled cow’s head at Bovine Head Market.

Escape the chaotic stools with a breezy walk along the Golden Mile and enjoy views over the long stretches of sands that gave this promenade its name or brave the waves and learn to surf.

Durban’s Botanic Gardens are also worthy of a visit, if only to set eyes on the beehive-like Butterfly Dome which is covered in butterfly-attracting flowers, causing a crowd of the beautiful flying insects.

Swim with blacktip sharks in Durban (Shutterstock)

The seaside town of Scottburgh is just a 45 minute drive from Durban. Head here for a chance to chill on the palm tree flanked beach or to learn to dive, and even swim with sharks.

6. Visit Johannesburg

Explore Maboneng (Dreamstime)

South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg is home to one of the country’s most important historical sites, Constitutional Hill. This former prison has been transformed into four exhibitions, where you’ll learn the harrowing but important stories from the times when people were incarcerated here. Famous previous inmates include Nelson and Winnie Mandela and Ghandi.

Once the past has been honoured, move into modern, more positive times by exploring Maboneng, a hip neighbourhood east of Downtown that’s turned its turbulent past into a celebration of creativity. Among the café’s, you’ll find displays of local art along with huge murals painted on the sides of the buildings. Don’t miss Pretoria, South Africa’s capital, just north of Johannesburg where you can visit the Union Buildings, where Nelson Mandela was inaugurated.

Port Elizabeth is worth exploring (Shutterstock)

Ten hours south of Johannesburg is Port Elizabeth and is worth the detour. Take a boat tour to spot whales and rare seabirds or embark on the Donkin Heritage Trail which links 51 places of historical interest and architectural beauty.

7. Learn about community projects

south africa safari holidays tui

Visit South Africa with TUI Tours

south africa safari holidays tui

Be a part of and learn about some of the positive projects that have been created to help local communities. TUI Tours can take you to visit the Ecokidz project, which takes hundreds of children who live near Krueger National Park but can’t afford to visit, on a two-day trip to the park on their doorstep. The children can study the flora as well as enjoy sightings of the Big Five and Africa’s other incredible wildlife. As well as this, the programme visits many local schools to teach vital and interactive lessons on nature and conservation.

Head to Sedgefield, on the Garden Route to see the Vukani Bead Project in action. The project was set up by a group of women as a way of funding their own families. Watch as members transform the colourful beads into various unique and intricate gifts. With the design often reflecting their African culture, these keyrings and items of jewellery make for great souvenirs and allows you to contribute to the project.

Watch the art of glassblowing (Shutterstock)

Learn another trade with a visit to the glass factory in Swaziland. Here, you can watch glass blowers at work, where everything they create is made from recycled materials.

8. Meet the locals

south africa safari holidays tui

Visit a Zulu village (Shutterstock)

south africa safari holidays tui

Travel to South Africa with TUI Tours

South Africa is often referred to as the ‘Rainbow Nation’ because of its huge cultural diversity. Boasting eleven official languages, there’s a lot of different customs, traditions and ways of life to learn about here. Meet Zulu people by heading to a village in the Lebommbo Mountains, in the northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal. Be welcomed into their community, learn about their way of life and listen to their fascinating stories about their history and culture.

Another way of understanding and seeing a more authentic side of South Africa is by choosing local guides. Whether going on a safari walk, hiking up many of the mountains or taking a tour of one of the cities, try and find a guide who grew up in the area. They will be able to show you places and tell you stories you’d struggle to find out for yourself.

Make sure you respect any local people you meet. Remember to smile, try and say hello in the local languae, and always ask permission before taking someone’s picture.

9. Eat like a local

south africa safari holidays tui

Enjoy a South African Braai (Shutterstock)

south africa safari holidays tui

Discover south Africa with Tui Tours

South Africa’s cuisine has been heavily influenced by other cultures. Boerewor, for instance, is an intestine-like curl of pork and beef combined sausage that was first introduced to the nation when migrants from the Netherlands came over. Enjoy Boerewor barbequed on an authentic braai. In Phalaborwa, you can pull up a chair at the campfire and tuck into a Braai at sunset while discussing the top wildlife spots of the day, an experience TUI Tours can take you on. Alternatively, try a traditional boma in the mountain village of Mzuke, where barbeque is combined with evening entertainment from storytellers and singers under the stars.

Bunny chow is the country’s go-to takeaway option. The seaside town of Scottburgh is a good place to sample your first bowl of this Indian-inspired curry, served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread. You won’t be able to resist tearing off sides of the edible bowl to mop up the last of the spicy sauce.

Wash all of this down with a glass of world-famous wine. If you’re in Cape Town, head to Groot Constantina – the oldest wine-producing farm in all of South Africa. Here, you can sip wine while pairing it with chocolate and head inside the cellar to learn about the wine that’s been produced here since 1685.

Sample South African nougat (Dreamstime)

If you have a sweet tooth, opt for the nations favourite treat, nougat. One of the best producers of this chewy delight is the Coach House Confectionary. Combine a visit with wildlife watching in Waterberg.

Feeling inspired?

south africa safari holidays tui

If you’ve been inspired by South Africa and are raring to get there, all of these experiences are available with TUI Tours.

Their South Africa Explorer itinerary takes you to meet the locals and to see wildlife on safari. Choose the Safari & Sands in South Africa tour to spot the Big Five in Hluhluwe, cruise St Lucia lake and visit Durban. Or embark on TUI Tour’s Into the Wild trip to try an authentic South African Braai, go on a big game safari and learn about important community projects.

Travelling to Africa once – and wanting to return over and over again

From round trips and safaris via beach holidays all the way to luxury lodges: tui offers a broad portfolio in africa.

Around 1.2 billion people in more than 50 countries: Africa is colourful. The land mass of the continent is around ten times larger than Europe – its landscapes comprise deserts and mountains as well as rainforests and savannahs. Africa features seemingly endless expanses, up-close animal encounters, lively metropolises such as Cape Town or Cairo, warm-hearted people, World Cultural Heritage sites, beautiful beaches and fascinating diving spots. Whoever wishes to discover Africa’s diversity will find numerous travel options with TUI. “Apart from Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco in North Africa, our brochure includes trips to Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, as well as South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Eswatini, former Swaziland,“ says Martina Horter, TUI Germany Product Manager in charge of Southern Africa. “In Western Africa, our colleagues in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and France offer additional destinations, including Gambia or Senegal. These countries can also be booked by German customers, just as Ethiopia or Ruanda, but they are not included in TUI’s brochures.“

TUI offers travellers every option to travel across Africa, offering them a wealth of experiences. “We offer adventure seekers everything their heart desires, from round trips via beach holidays, for instance on the wonderful beaches in Mombasa or Zanzibar, all the way to luxury holidays to Kruger National Park in lodges for 1,500 euros a night,” says Horter. “Many customers combine round trips, for instance in South Africa, with a relaxing holiday, for instance in one of the 30 islands of Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique.” In South Africa alone, German holidaymakers can choose from around 300 hotels – throughout Africa, TUI’s portfolio comprises several thousand hotels and resorts across all source markets. “The quality of the hotels ranges from three to five stars”, explains the Product Manager. In order to facilitate sustainable construction, an environmental management plan reflecting site-specific conditions is prepared before the start of work on the TUI Blue hotels. The hotels are guided to make sustainable decisions during construction. These can include, for example, energy-efficient construction as well as the use of environmentally friendly construction materials. In addition, hybrid or electrical construction machines and generators are used on the construction site. The goal of this measure is to build hotels that save both energy and resources.

“You will take back lifetime memories”

The highlights of the tourist programmes differ from country to country. “In East Africa, for instance, safaris can only be booked with a personal guide, while the programme for Southern African includes group tours as well as fly-in safaris with small planes, taking the guests from camp to camp, or even individual self-drive trips,“ outlines Horter. However, regardless of the option holidaymakers choose to go on a safari, the wildlife will make their Africa holiday an unforgettable experience virtually everywhere. “If you have ever watched lions or leopards in the wild from a distance of only a few metres, you will be longing to come back time and again,” says the Africa expert. “Moreover, you will love the beautiful vast landscapes – you will take back lifetime memories.”

Sun, sea and safari: South Africa highlights

Welcome to the wild! Is an African safari the ultimate tick on your bucket list? It should be! South Africa is special, there is no doubt about it, it is dusty and adventurous and warm and crazy and so much fun - we guarantee you will be back for more. The great thing about South Africa is the diversity you can find in one destination - 'Big Five' game reserves, waterfalls, spectacular self-drives, history, culture, great gastronomy, luxury, romance… we could go on and on!

You can discover lush scenery, breathtaking mountain views and exotic wildlife with holidays to South Africa. Plan your trip and discover our South Africa holiday packages and  hotels  today.

South Africa is a vast country with each province, city and game reserve offering a different experience, so where do you start? Most visitors combine a few different places within the country or across the region, travelling by plane, train or self-drive, and this is certainly what we would recommend.

Here are a few of our favourite combinations across South Africa and beyond:

Cape Town

City life mixed with adventure

Settle into an oceanside room in Cape Town then stay in the thick of it inside a game reserve. You can fly direct from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth for the Eastern Cape private game reserves or straight into Hoedspruit or Skukuza airports for the Kruger National Park.

Garden Route

Adding in some relaxation

For a relaxing break that includes a bit of the bustle of city life, start in Cape Town then take a meandering drive along the famous Garden Route ending in one of our wonderful game reserves in the Eastern Cape.

Safari & Sun City

Not a city person?

Then just skip the high-rises and get straight out into the bush. Sun City and Madikwe, Madikwe and Marataba, or just an extended stay in the Kruger, there are loads of options for the wild at heart.

south africa safari holidays tui

Culture vulture?

South Africa has a fascinating history and is a melting pot of cultures. Johannesburg and Cape Town are a great place to start with a choice of museums and exhibitions.

south africa safari holidays tui

Want to stay in one place?

Enjoy the Cape Town summer at The Bay Hotel in fun and funky Camps Bay, home to some of the city’s trendiest bars and restaurants. Stay here for the best of both worlds – where city life meets a sandy beach and the very best spot in the city for sunset cocktails.

Winelands

Head into the Winelands

Opt for Richard Branson’s Franschhoek lodge, Mont Rochelle, the ultimate in luxury. If you have a bit more time then add on a few nights in Hermanus too to spot whales and the infamous Great White Shark!

Holidays to South Africa wouldn’t be complete without a spectacular Big Five safari. You can choose to stay in a lodge or tent within one of the parks, or reside just outside and plan your own self-guided road trip safari instead  – either way, this is your chance to spot some incredible wildlife.

Safari & Sun City

When to go?

From April to October, we recommend heading for nothern areas such as Kruger National Park to enjoy warm safari evenings, and hot summer storms. However, if you do choose to enjoy the Eastern Cape in these winter months, the dry weather allows for low grass, less water-holes and easier wildlife spotting. From November to March, expect glorious weather wherever you go.

Kruger

Kruger National Park

One of the largest game reserves in South Africa with over 500 bird species and around 150 species of mammals. You’ve got a great choice of accommodation from tip-top luxury lodges to smaller, traditional hotels and homesteads outside of the park, great for the more budget-conscious.

south africa safari holidays tui

Heading South

Offering fantastic value for money, the Garden Route and Eastern Cape are home to some great private Big Five reserves including Pumba Private Game Reserve, with luxurious lodges and loads of activities on offer, especially for the kids. You're best off travelling in South Africa's summer months here (November - March) - if you're a first time safari-goer these would be perfect!

Safari & Sun City

Hotel comforts

If you like the idea of a safari but without staying in a lodge, try Sun City. This entertainment resort offers a good range of accommodation, a huge waterpark and choice of activities in a prime location just outside of the Pilanesberg National Park.

Immerse yourself in history and everyday life in vibrant  Cape Town . The lively metropolitan city is home to a myriad of boutiques, museums, restaurants and nightlife hotspots.

south africa safari holidays tui

The summer in Cape Town brings glorious weather and a drive through vineyards and along the Garden Route is one of the country’s highlights but also don’t be put off by travelling in the winter months! Sipping white wine under oak trees in the Cape vineyards in the summer months turns into drinking rich reds around the fire. Winter is also the best time to see the famous Southern Right Whales as they migrate to the Whale Coast from  April to November .

south africa safari holidays tui

Iconic Landmarks

Take a cable car up Table Mountain National Park for breathtaking views. Go early to miss the intense heat or abseil down if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. If you don't fancy such dizzy heights book yourself a ticket for the open bus tour - for less than £20 you can get a complete day tour taking in views of Table Bay along with Kirstenbosch National Gardens and the Constantia Vineyards.

south africa safari holidays tui

Food and Drink

The V&A Waterfront is the most visited tourist attraction in South Africa and a great place to find your feet. If you love sampling local food and drink, this is the place for you - head to the food market where you'll find over 40 vendors selling gourmet street food, accompanied by regular live music and local wines and beers. Pop by The Watershed with it's huge range of local crafts, great for picking up a souvier.

south africa safari holidays tui

When you've had enough of the hustle and bustle, escape to one of the beaches on the Cape coast for a picnic, Clifton or Camps Bay are a great option. In the evenings, get the party started on Long Street. On hotter summer nights, seek out a rooftop bar for epic views (and Instagram-worthy photo ops).

south africa safari holidays tui

History and Culture

Learn about the country’s rich history in one (or all) of the city’s many museums. District Six museum is a must-see to learn about the history of the apartheid. Set aside at least two hours to take in all the exhibits.

Alongside the wildlife, there’s all manner of forests, mountains and lagoons waiting to be explored. Here are a few you might not want to miss.

south africa safari holidays tui

Cango Caves

Located in the Garden Route, these massive chambers are easy to explore and the perfect escape from the midday heat. If you're adventurous (and don't mind tight spaces), opt for the extended tour.

south africa safari holidays tui

Swartberg Pass

After exploring the beautiful Karoo, take a majestic drive along the Swartberg Pass, dropping down from Oudtshoorn to the Garden Route coastline. Here you can immerse yourself in dramatic mountain scenery and beautiful flowers.

Kruger and Surrounds

Grab a car and spend a few nights here, as the prime location of this town allows for spectacular self-drive safaris in the Kruger National Park but also close-by is one of the largest canyons on earth, the Blyde River Canyon. The region is known as the Panoramic Route which includes God’s Window, the Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

When should I go?

South Africa has the opposite seasons to the UK — their summer is roughly  November to March  and winter is from  April to October . The north of the country (Kruger, Madikwe, Sun City) is generally warm all year but the cooler winter temperatures have a stronger effect on the Western and  Eastern Cape  Provinces which includes Cape Town and the  Garden Route .

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from UK to Johannesburg

Take your overnight flight to Johannesburg.

Day 2: Arrive in Johannesburg

After our morning arrival, we visit the Apartheid Museum, taking us on a fascinating, horrifying, humbling and ultimately inspiring journey from the dark days of ‘whites only’ privilege, through to Nelson Mandela’s historic release. It’s a truly fascinating exhibition charting the apartheid years and the struggle against it, culminating in the first democratic elections. It is a superbly presented walk through contemporary history using original material, riveting eyewitness accounts, photographs and film.

The rest of the afternoon is at leisure.

Day 3: Panorama Route

After breakfast we depart for the open spaces and farmlands of the Highveld, following the Panorama Route to Kruger National Park, one of the most scenic drives in South Africa. We follow the spectacular rim of the Blyde River Canyon, an amazing 20-mile long and 2,300-foot-deep gorge cutting a vast swathe through the Great Escarpment separating the temperate grasslands of the highveld and the drier savannah beyond. Deep circular rock formations created by years of erosion and many excellent vantage points offer superb photo opportunities for some of the most breath-taking views in Africa.

Our hotel for the next three nights is beautifully located in the midst of lush forest on the banks of the Sabie River on the edge of the National Park. Dinner is included tonight.

Day 4: Kruger Game Drive

Today we have a full day’s game drive in specially adapted 10 seat 4x4 vehicles. Experience areas of sweeping savannah, bisected by rivers full of hippos, muddy waterholes lined with animals quenching their thirst, and the bush itself, studded by biscuit-coloured termite mounds. There is simply nothing to beat that rising feeling of anticipation and excitement as we enter the nearby park in the half-light of the spectacular African dawn, surrounded by the noise of a unique ‘dawn chorus.'

Which animal shall we spot first? Perhaps an elephant, a family of warthogs or possibly even the elusive cheetah. The experienced game rangers know the best tracks and waterholes whilst their stories will amuse, inform and fascinate you. Most have lived here all their lives, accumulating a vast wealth of knowledge.

Day 5: Kruger free day

This is a day at leisure for anyone who just wants to take it easy by one of the pools at the hotel or do some hippo-spotting from the lovely lawn overlooking the river.

Alternatively, you could try river rafting (subject to weather conditions), as well as sunset safaris or night safaris where you can experience the unique thrill of an open 4x4 vehicle game drive by spotlight. Exclusively for Riviera Travel guests, there are also a limited number of places available to stay the night at a tented camp and go on a bushwalk.

Our camp provides a ‘glamping’ experience with comfortable beds, electricity and en-suite shower with WC. Our chef will create excellent wholesome cuisine and you can listen out for any nocturnal visitors whilst sitting around the campfire!

You rejoin the main tour on the morning of day 6.

Day 6: Eswatini & Kwazulu Natal

Today we leave Kruger on our way to the battlefields of Zululand. After breakfast we’ll drive south, entering the small but scenically beautiful country of Eswatini. As the road climbs past the interestingly named Piggs Peak we descend through lush green fields and rolling hills interspersed with small farms and drive through the country’s small capital Mbabane, passing the parliament house and Royal Palace en route.

Kwazulu Natal

We cross back into South Africa in the afternoon and enter Kwazulu Natal province.

Day 7: Isandlwana & Rorke’s Drift

After breakfast we visit the battlefields of the Zulu Wars, Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift – one a crushing British defeat sending shock waves throughout the Empire, the other a valiant stand of just 140 against 4,000 Zulus. Brilliantly dramatised in the films Zulu Dawn and Zulu, these two battles, just a day apart, became a defining moment for the British Empire.

In 1879 at Isandlwana, a depleted force of 1,300 were surprised and outmanoeuvred by a 20,000-strong Zulu army armed with cowhide shields and spears. Only a handful survived.

Rorke’s Drift

The next day just 9 miles away, about 140 British soldiers, some wounded, held off 4,000 Zulus for over ten hours at Rorke’s Drift, an action earning eleven Victoria Crosses, the largest number ever awarded in a single engagement. Isandlwana particularly, remains a haunting and lonely place, with mass graves marked by simple white stones. Our specialist Zulu guide will really make those desperate encounters come alive.

We return to our hotel in the afternoon. Lunch is included today.

Day 8: Mossel Bay

After breakfast we return to Johannesburg airport, flying to George in the Western Cape and at the heart of the gorgeous Garden Route, before the short drive to the coastal town of Mossel Bay.

Dinner at a local restaurant is included tonight.

Day 9: Featherbed Nature Reserve

Knysna & Featherbed Nature Reserve

We will depart our hotel in the morning and drive to Knysna where we take a ferry across the lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve site which we explore by 4x4 vehicle. We stop at some magnificent viewpoints whilst our guide describes the area’s fauna, flora, history and shipwrecks, followed by an easy downhill guided walk and delicious buffet lunch under the canopy of the milkwood trees (note: due to weather conditions over the winter period, departures between May and Aug will have lunch at a restaurant in Knysna). After taking the ferry back to Knysna, you will have some free time to explore this small town, with its numerous art galleries, craft shops and the Knysna Quays marina shopping complex.

Day 10: Hermanus

This morning, we take the long scenic drive to the Cape’s beautiful Winelands before continuing to Hermanus, a lovely town that’s also the world’s best spot for on-shore whale watching, usually between July and November. These gentle giants move in seemingly permanent slow motion and are a truly amazing sight as they playfully cavort in the water.

Day 11:   Winelands

Today we tour the awesomely beautiful Winelands. Set in a valley backed by majestic mountains, rows of manicured vines and orchards stretch into a distance studded by lime-washed, often thatched, 300-year-old wineries built in the unique Cape Dutch style, seemingly mirroring the undulations of the surrounding countryside.

Our first stop is elegant Stellenbosch, established 300 years ago and home of South Africa’s most prestigious university. Period buildings and historic streets reinforce the town’s dignified atmosphere. We have time to explore this delightful town before enjoying a fascinating cellar tour and tasting at the award-winning Neethlingshof Wine Estate.

Franschhoek

After that, we visit the small town of Franschhoek, set at the head of a valley. Tonight, we’ll enjoy an included typical South African BBQ or Cape Malay buffet dinner at our hotel.

Day 12: Cape Town

This morning we visit the amazing Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, located just outside Cape Town and set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. These incredible gardens are some of the best in South Africa, with numerous and fascinating endemic flora and orchid varieties.

We soon arrive in Cape Town and our hotel, the four-star Southern Sun Waterfront Hotel, staying three nights on bed-and-breakfast. It is located right in the centre of this bustling city within walking distance of the V&A waterfront.

The afternoon is spent at leisure when you can start to explore this beautiful city.

Day 13: Cape of Good Hope

This morning, we visit Cape Point and the legendary Cape of Good Hope, firstly driving past pristine beaches to the picturesque fishing harbour of Hout Bay.

We continue along the breathtakingly scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive, full of rugged seascapes, to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, then on to Cape Point itself. We see the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean currents and the treacherous promontory of rocks and swells, the scourge of mariners for centuries.

Finally, we visit Boulders Beach and its penguin colony, returning to the city during the afternoon.

Day 14: Free day in Cape Town

Cape Town, featuring British, Dutch and Cape Malay influences, is simply one of the world’s most naturally beautiful cities with so much to offer the visitor! You could do some bargain shopping at the Waterfront, followed by a sumptuous seafood lunch. Or maybe go peoplewatching at fashionable Camps Bay?

Obviously, no visit to Cape Town is complete without taking a revolving cable car ride to the top of iconic Table Mountain which has announced the city to generations of seafarers. The views are fabulous. You should also visit Robben Island (weather permitting and based on availability), where Nelson Mandela spent most of his 27- year incarceration, and whose visitors since its opening have included Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Gates and even Nelson Mandela himself.

Perhaps though, simply wander where your feet take you, or relax a little, taking afternoon tea in beautiful colonial splendour at the Mount Nelson hotel – the choice is yours.

Day 15: Journey home

It’s time to say goodbye and start your journey home.

Depending on your travel date and airline schedule, your flight home will either be via Johannesburg with an aircraft change or a direct flight from Cape Town.

4x4 in Africa

Africa Safari Tours & Holidays

  • Africa Safari Tours & Holidays

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in Africa is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

Elephants in Kruger National Park

Spot the Big 5 in South Africa

Go on safari through Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa . This massive park is one of the premier safari spots in all of Africa and for good reason; it’s home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species, including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog.

Gorillas in Uganda

Go gorilla trekking in Uganda

Venture deep into the steamy jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of the rare mountain gorilla. With a local guide to lead you, you’ll trek into the forest to spend one unforgettable hour watching and hanging out with a family of gorillas. A close encounter with these gentle giants is an extraordinary African experience that will always stay with you.

giraffes on the Serengeti in Tanzania

Float over the Serengeti

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Okavango Delta

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Where we stay on safari.

Camping in Africa

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

Africa overland truck

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our Africa overland page .

African safari FAQs

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Read more about how to choose your ideal African safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our accessible travel page for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Responsible travel

Our stance on Animal Welfare

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Read more about our Animal Welfare Policy here .
