16 Best Travel Apps for Canada

Best travel apps on your phone makes travelling easier and more fun

For most of us, our Smartphone has become our constant companion and we can’t imagine life without them when it comes to planning vacation . Travel apps are extremely useful for booking and managing a trip.

Table of Contents

My Favourite Travel Apps for Canada

Travel apps help you with checking on visa requirements, booking accommodation, and last-minute flight changes. They navigate for you, make currency conversions and help you with language translations. Whatever you need when you hit the road, there is a travel app to help you with it.

With a huge selection of travel apps available for everything we can think of it is challenging to pick the most useful ones for our trip. Here are 12 travel apps you don’t want to miss when touring Canada.

1. Airline Apps

Whatever airlines you use to fly to Canada, make sure to download the travel apps of the carriers you’re flying with.

It is crucial to keep the Airline travel apps updated, especially the night before you start your trip. You want the newest versions of all the airline apps you’re intending to use. Always turn on push notifications so that the app can reach you.

With an airline app, you can book, change or cancel your flight, check in and get your boarding pass. It notifies you about your flight’s status, boarding times and more. On top of all that you can use your phone to scan a boarding pass, you will receive updates on your checked bags, changes in gates and any delays in boarding. I appreciate this service, especially in winter when flights in Canada sometimes get cancelled or delayed because of severe weather conditions. With the airline app, I get notified before I waste my trip to the airport and I can book myself onto another flight.

Here you can check if you need a visa or health declaration for your next trip. If you do need a visa, you can get it with a few clicks. iVisa also helps with passport applications, passport photos and photo ID. No need to struggle with government forms, waiting in lines, or trips to the embassy. You can get your travel documents with a secure and 100% online application process.

Searching for cheap flights can be a time-consuming process. Try Hopper, the easy-to-use Hopper travel app that analyzes countless flight prices and lets you know if the time was good to purchase a ticket on a particular route. The app provides you with an estimated time frame for a potential price drop and suggests when you should book before a likely price hike. You can save the routes and you will be notified when the price goes down.

4. TripCase

TripCase is one of my favourite travel apps. Much superior to any airline app, it’s more useful and faster. It acts as a trip manager where you can link entire bookings, including accommodation , car rentals and attractions. The mobile app does most of the necessary sorting for you and gives you a clear overview of your trip with flight information, hotel addresses, car rental reservation numbers, and more. The app is easy to set up. TripCase is a free travel app for iPhone and Android.

In Canada where cellular service is infrequent outside of towns, this free travel app becomes useful. Maps.me lets you download detailed, offline maps to your device and offers you turn-by-turn navigation for driving, hiking, or biking to a selected location. Maps.me is definitely one of my favourite travel apps. I use it when I’m on the road or when I’m at home.

Travel Apps and Travel Gear

6. Grid Diary

This app provides an easy way to write your diary and keep track of your journey. I’ve been using Grid Diary in iOS for several years. It is well designed to keep a dairy in an organized way. Instead of writing a diary from scratch, you just need to answer some specific questions. Grid Diary combines weekly, monthly and yearly diaries, and it enables you to build your own journal and planner system. Gone are the times when travel notes were all over the place and it was such a chore to work through them after each trip.

The app also has a paid version which is totally worth it. Check it out for yourself.

Airbnb is known as a trusted community and is growing fast in Canada. With the Airbnb mobile app, it’s easy to discover unique places, meet the locals and save money on accommodation. Find a rental place just right for you, whether it’s a rustic cabin, a small cozy room in someone’s house, a yurt, or even a tree house.  The app gives you access to a large variety of vacation home rentals, new experiences, and places to visit all over Canada.

8. Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is an online community that connects travellers with locals for free lodging. The best part of the travel app is the new “Hangout” feature when you arrive in a new town. To use Hangout, simply turn on your availability. You can either start your own hangout by typing in what you want to do or browse the hangouts other travellers have already started in the area you’re at.

You don’t need to use Couchsurfing for finding accommodation while travelling instead you can use the Couchsurfing app to meet up with people and make new friends.

9. GasBuddy

Whether you’re road-tripping or live in Canada, this app is a must and is a money saver. GasBuddy locates gas stations near you and shows you prices, sends you price hike alerts and the app notifies you about deals. (Canada and USA only).

Travel Vancouver - app

10. Google Translate

If you’re travelling to Canada and you don’t speak English, Google Translate is a good app to have on your phone. Speak, snap or type anything and the app will instantly translate to English, French, or any other language you want. The app offers many additional features including instant camera translation and can be used offline as well.  It’s like having your interpreter along and it helps with any language barrier you come across.

11. Currency Converter Plus

Converter Plus is an easy-to-use unit converter, currency converter and calculator with the most extensive list of currencies and units in hundreds of categories. It also comes with many preset calculators like mortgage, loan, tip, fuel consumption and many others for everyday problems.

This is another app I’m using a lot. It lets you send money, receive payments from abroad, check exchange rates, pay bills or send money home. Wherever you are, you can do all with the Wise. Using Wise you save on transfer costs and you don’t get charged hidden fees. You can open a multi-currency account and get bank account details in nine currencies, or keep money in your account in 50+ currencies.

13. Whatsapp

Whatsapp messenger is one of the best apps to stay connected while travelling. It connects through WiFi so it’s free to use and you don’t have to worry about roaming charges. The app is a great texting platform for sharing information, photos and videos while you’re travelling and is widely used.  On top of that, the app lets you make long-distance phone calls for free, as well as video calls.

14. Instagram

Keep your family and friends up-to-date with travel pictures. Quickly shoot a picture with Instagram, choose one of the filters to make it special if you like, and then share it on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

15. Snapseed

When it comes to photo editing, Snapseed is the app you want. The free photo-editing app is available for Android or iOS. You can take photos in the app and edit them, or edit photos already in your camera, including photos in JPG and RAW formats. Try it out and learn how to use it. It is pretty easy to get started.

16. Prey Find my Phone Tracker GPS

This prey anti-theft app manages your digital accessories and lets you track and find your phone, laptop, or tablet even after they have been stolen or lost. It lets you retrieve photos remotely, wipe data, and prevent future loss by locking devices from across the street or across the world.

Yrene lives in the Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada, and is the founder of BackcountryCanadaTravel.com. She was born in Switzerland, lived and worked on different continents and has travelled the world. Yes, that's me, an Entrepreneur, wilderness nut and animal lover who prefers off-the-beaten-track places. I write about things I love. Mostely.

It was good to meet you on my way up through BC! I am excited to read on your travels! You really have inspired me on my journey too! Best wishes Jamie

Hello Jamie, I hope your trip to Alaska is going well. I’m happy to have met you as and thanks for the kind note and all. I wore the cool socks on my hike to Jaffrey Lakes near Pemberton a while back and was thinking of you. Please stay in touch, maybe I will see you in California!

Delphine du Toit

Hi Yrene, in your very helpful listing of useful apps for travelling you missed a critical one – probably because we developed it after you created the list. AutoWIKI is a location aware (GPS-based) audio (Text to speech) mobile app that works anywhere there is Internet and data access. We’re also working on developing offline packages for the areas where there is no coverage. It’s a Canadian product, co-creators live on the east and west coasts, so our data base is quite heavily populated with stories about places, people, events and things in the Maritimes and in Vancouver. In addition to our own database we draw on several other publicly accessible sites e.g. Wikipedia and several others, including First Nations land acknowledgements. We’ve tested it in 53 countries (English, French and Japanese), and on a road trip from BC to Nova Scotia. Please visit our website and contact me for more information. AND please download it and try out AutoWIKI – it is designed for road trips but is great in downtown areas for walking or cycling, – there’s lots of data and things to see and do

Thanks for the information. I did notice that your app is still a BETA version but I will download it and check it out.

Mapping Megan

There’s no denying that smartphones and their handy apps have revolutionized travel. Whether it’s booking flights and hotels, navigating new cities and finding parking, or gaining insight on local attractions, phone apps make many aspects of travel much easier.

To get you ready for your future Canadian holiday, I thought I’d introduce you to some of Canada’s top most useful travel apps.

While you may already have Airbnb, Uber, and Google Translate to help with French speaking regions like Quebec, you may not be aware that there are other incredible apps which are in many cases specifically designed for travelers visiting Canada.

Whether you need a campsite in Banff, want to check the winter ski forecasts, or looking for a Canada mobile casino due to the fact 65% of Canada’s top casinos including Casino Niagara and Casino de Montréal are still closed thanks to COVID, here are ten incredible Canadian travel apps you should download before your trip.

Top 10 Most Useful Canada Travel Apps

Nearly all travelers to Canada are now being urged to download the ArriveCan mobile app to be able to provide the mandatory travel information on and after their entry into Canada as a way to prevent the spread of COVID.

Though in  new Canada travel measures : the COVID-19 test rule does not apply to vaccinated arrivals from 1 April 2022.

While you won’t be denied flight boarding or entry for failing to submit the required information through ArriveCAN , you will be forced to face additional delays at the border for public health questioning and may be subject to enforcement action, so it pays to just download the app and upload the necessary information.

There is potential hefty fines and even possible prison time for travelers who violate health and travel safety instructions or fail to provide accurate information.

The ArriveCAN app allows you to upload your Canadian travel and contact information , your quarantine plan (air travellers are currently required to book a 3-night stay at a government-authorized hotel and are given a trip reference code they are to input in ArriveCAN), and complete daily COVID-19 symptom self-assessments until the completion of your quarantine period or until you report symptoms.

After inputting the required information, a receipt will be emailed to you or you can take a screenshot of your confirmation which you will then need to show to a Canadian border services officer upon entry.

The Canadian government is likely to continue using this app in some form even after border restriction ease, although exact required information may change.

Air Canada + Aeroplan

If you’re going to download one airline app for Canada, it’s likely to be this one since Air Canada in undoubtedly the nation’s largest and most popular airline.

Part of Star Alliance, Air Canada serves more than 200 destinations worldwide which includes all major Canadian cities and is widely regarded as one of North America’s finest airlines.

The Air Canada + Aeroplan app allows you to book flights, access your boarding passes offline, and get notifications when there’s a gate change and when it’s time to board. You can also view the in-flight menu and stream movies, shows, and music via Air Canada’s Rouge Player.

You can also check your Air Canada Aeroplan frequent flyer loyalty program account to see your points balance and use your points to book car rentals or hotels.

The airline’s app is also the first Canadian airline app to offer very helpful turn-by-turn navigation to popular Canadian airports such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Parks Canada – National App

A large number of visitors to Canada come to enjoy the country’s vast wilderness. Canada offers up nearly 50 national parks and national park reserves, where a wide range of wildlife can be found including bears, wolves, and moose.

The Parks Canada app allows you to view the various national parks and historic sites to find ones you may wish to visit. You can plan your itinerary and download hiking trail maps.

You’ll find a list of things to do in each park, basic camping tips with advice for what you should pack , and links to the various websites where you can make camping reservations within the parks.

The app goes beyond the major national parks to bring you the country’s hidden natural gems. With at least one national park in each of Canada’s provinces and territories, you’re bound to find a park near your chosen travel destination.

Canada Topo Maps

Canada Topo Maps comes in both a free and paid app version, and complements the Parks Canada app nicely. Whether you’re planning to hike, mountain, bike, or kayak, having topographic maps comes in handy.

You are able to download maps for offline viewing for when you know you won’t have cell data, and the route tracking uses GPS signals from satellites.

The free version of this outdoor navigation app allows you to create waypoints, GoTo-waypoint-navigation, and create and share routes and waypoints via Facebook, with map layers such as Google Maps available.

The pro version allows you to use point-to point navigation where you can track your speed, elevation gain, and distance travelled.

WikiCamps Canada

This is the only paid app in our list but it’s both cheap and a simple one time purchase. WikiCamps Canada offers up the nation’s largest database of campsites whether you’re looking for basic camping or a state of the art RV park.

Many of the app’s features work offline and new campsites are constantly being added. Currently, there are already over 9,000 different campsites where you can view photos and read recent reviews.

You can fine tune your campsite search results to reveal locations that are powered/non-powered, allow dogs, offer showers, have toilets, provide dump stations, etc. The app even features a helpful 7-day weather forecast.

iOverlander

An alternative free version to WikiCamps Canada is iOverlander . This app isn’t specific to Canada but since many travellers choose to travel as overlanders across the vast stretches of Canadian wilderness, it is used widely by visitors here.

The app is a very useful tool for campers much like WikiCamps Canada, with its maps offering up helpful locations not often found on campsite locators such as laundromats, auto mechanics, propane filling stations, potable water locations, restaurants, and even nearby tourist attractions.

New updated sites and information is constantly being added, as you yourself can add new places in order to share knowledge with other overlanders and campers. It’s an app that’s truly built by a community of outdoor and camping lovers.

iSki Canada

Canada offers up some of the world’s finest winter skiing and the iSki Canada app is a must whether you’re heading to Canada’s top ski resorts such as Whistler or Lake Louise.

The app offers comprehensive information on most of Canada’s top ski resorts where you can view the latest ski resort updates.

Look up snow reports and forecasts , view ski trail maps, and watch various ski resorts’ live web cams. A GPS tracker also allows you to record your ski runs, measuring your speed, time, distance, etc. Share your skills on the slopes with your friends and compete against other skiers within the app for prizes.

PayByPhone Parking

Both Canadian residents and visitors love the PayByPhone Parking app as it allows you to search for parking no matter if you’re looking for street parking, secure gated parking, or parking garages.

Better yet is the fact you no longer need to search for spare change for a parking meter or even use your credit card at parking pay stations. You can simply use your phone to pay for your parking.

You can search maps for where you can pay for parking using the PayByPhone app and don’t even need to create an account. There are countless locations around Canada where you can use PayByPhone including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Quebec , Winnipeg, and more.

Not only can you pay for parking with the app, you can also receive notifications of when your parking is due to expire and can extend your parking session remotely from your phone with the app.

Nearly 100 million people have downloaded the GasBuddy app which helps residents of the U.S. and Canada find the cheapest fuel around so you don’t waste any precious dollars of your travel budget.

The app looks at over 150,000 gas stations in North America to let you see where you can fill up for the least amount. You can narrow gas station results to show specific brands such as Shell, Exxon, Marathon, or Sunoco. You can also seek out stations that offer restrooms, car wash facilities, or onsite restaurants.

The app also allows business travellers the ability to log their fuelling stops for tax purposes or getting reimbursed by their company. It also offers tips on how you can become a more fuel-efficient driver and you can enter daily drawing to win free gas vouchers.

My Aurora Forecast

Winter visitors to Canada can not only enjoy skiing and ice skating, they may be able to also witness one of Earth’s most fascinating celestial displays. And the My Aurora Forecast app is the best for helping you witness the northern lights.

The mesmerising colourful display that the northern lights or aurora borealis puts on is a truly memorable experience and can be achieved in Canada with a bit of luck between October and March each year.

You can get forecasts of when the display is expected to occur, with helpful KP index updates which measure the geomagnetic activity over a 3-hour period to give you insight on the likelihood of you seeing the display. The KP index ranges from 0-9, with 5 and above offering the best chances of seeing the lights.

The app will show you the best current locations in your area for viewing the lights based on cloud cover and activity. It will also send you notifications when high aurora activity is expected in your chosen area whether that be Whitehorse in the Yukon or Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

Description.

ArriveCAN still contains Advance CBSA Declaration, which allows you to answer customs and immigration questions up to 72 hours in advance of flying into Canada. It is currently available to international air travellers who enter Canada at selected airports. By submitting your customs and immigration information in advance, you will spend less time at a primary inspection kiosk (PIK) or eGate when you arrive at the airport. This contributes to shorter line-ups in arrivals halls. At the border, you will be prompted to scan your travel document at a primary inspection device and confirm your identity. Once your identity has been confirmed, your Advance CBSA Declaration will be retrieved from ArriveCAN for you to review and certify. If changes are required, you can edit and update your declaration prior to certification. Use of the Advance CBSA Declaration feature of ArriveCAN is entirely optional. Please refer to the accessibility notice for this app: https://www.canada.ca/en/border-services-agency/services/arrivecan.html#accessibility-notice This app supports English, French and Spanish (as per your device’s language settings). Add vaccine card

How can I add vaccine card as well as passport in this app!?

Developer Response ,

Please ensure that you have downloaded the most up-to-date version of ArriveCAN and you can do so by selecting 'update' in the App Store. Additionally, you won't be able to upload your proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN if you haven't received the full dosage of an accepted vaccine at least 14 days before entering Canada. You can find step-by-step guidance for ArriveCAN on https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/arrivecan/help.htm.

Total tyranny

To have to complete this to, say, go to the US for an afternoon & return home 4 hours later as a fully vaccinated citizen is tyranny.

Moving forward, let’s delve into the question: How much does it cost to build travel apps in Canada?

How Much Does It Cost to Build Travel Apps?

Exploring the Costs- Building Your Ideal Travel App Budget!

The amount of money it will take to create travel apps in Canada will depend on several factors, including the app’s features, the geographical location of the development team and the development period. Here’s a breakdown of the various cost considerations:

  • Basic Travel Apps:

The development cost typically starts at a lower range for straightforward travel apps in Canada with fundamental features like booking capabilities, search functionality, and user reviews. These essential features set the foundation for functional travel apps in Canada without requiring extensive advanced technology.

  • Mid-Level Complexity Apps:

Development costs will increase for apps with moderate complexity, which may include features such as real-time notifications, social media integration, and basic AI functionalities. Travel apps in Canada offer more interactive and dynamic user experiences.

  • Advanced Travel Apps:

While there will always be lower-cost, lower-feature travel apps in Canada that might contain fewer features or rely on less cutting-edge technology components such as AI-based algorithms or VR-guided tours, highly-featured, deeply integrated applications will cost substantially more to engineer.

  • Development Timeline:

The development timeline can also impact the overall cost. A more extended development period might result in higher costs due to extended labour and resource allocation. At the same time, a shorter timeline may reduce costs but require more intensive and possibly more expensive work schedules.

  • Additional Costs:

After the developmental stage, future costs related to the upkeep, modifications, and consistent sustenance of the project or product may add up over time; therefore, planning for them right from the application’s development stage will help ensure enough to cover the costs of keeping the application updated and functional.

  • Choosing the Right Development Team:

Choosing the right development team as a first step has been imperative towards the success of travel apps in Canada. For this reason, it is always wise to spend a lot of time planning and choosing the best React Native app development company based on experience, reputation, previous projects, and reviews.

Now, let’s explore building a travel app with excellence.

The Best Travel Apps Canada

We started our camper van rentals company in Calgary to share the van life experience with the world! Our team wants your vacation to be a memorable success (one peak at our van life tips & tricks blogs proves it). Lots of clients ask what travel apps they should use in Canada. So we made a list of the best travel apps in Canada for your travelling pleasure.

Experiencing van life is both a fascinating and exhilarating idea that will put you a little out of your comfort zone. And, you'll be all the better for it!

The travel apps for travel in Canada that we recommend are both free and earned the NATS stamp of approval. Tested and proven by yours truly, here’s a list of what apps we love to travel with:

iOverlander

The weather network, topo maps canada.

Google Maps

Below is the explanation why.

The Best Van Life Travel Apps

Two free apps for RV travel are iOverlander and FreeRoam. These are the #vanlife 's best travel apps in Canada. They "do it all”. On our trips, we often open iOverlander and FreeRoam.

Both have helped us find:

Gas stations

Water hookups

Cell reception

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind these databases are based on user generated content. So, some submissions may no longer be--or may never have been accurate.

Avoid issues by reading visitor comments. If you read many comments about difficulty parking or highway noise, continue searching. On the flip side, if most reviews reference only a beautiful sunset, it’s probably fine.

iOverlander Icon

iOverlander is typically our first point of reference.

What is iOverlander? It’s an easy to use dashboard whose icons represent everything you need on a road trip. You will find gas stations, propane refills, water hookups, dump stations, Wi-Fi and campsites, along with other less common requests.

iOverlander is one of the best travel apps in Canada for van life.

We love iOverlander to find off-grid sleeping spots.

First, we browse the area to see what van lifers recommend. Then, we match that location with Google Maps and search for a nearby field, park, school, or public building.

We prefer parking where one side of the street is not residential–you bug fewer people that way.

Disclaimer: Off-grid camping is strictly prohibited in national and provincial parks.

FreeRoam Icon

FreeRoam and iOverlander are similar. Both check all the boxes for planning a successful road trip. FreeRoam gives and allows you to filter on additional details. For example, you can filter campgrounds by amenities, reviews, rig length, and crowdedness in particular.

Travellers often worry about wi-fi or cell service. FreeRoam has a feature just for this. You can overlay cell phone carriers onto the map. Another overlay feature is the firesmoke layer. As we’ve seen many fires in the past few years, this feature is becoming increasingly helpful during bad air quality conditions.

Apps For A Set Travel Purposes

Local weather forecasts.

You may hear Albertans say “Don’t like the weather? Wait five minutes!” Funny, but the truth is Albertan climate is difficult to predict. Do yourself a favour and bring a backup jacket or sweater if you’re going into the wilderness. Extra layers are lightweight to carry and worth whatever burden in case a storm catches you.

I caution everyone when it comes to mountain weather. You can experience all 4 seasons on a summer day in the mountains.

Météomédia Icon

The Weather Network is a basic weather forecaster app. It gives an hourly breakdown along with a 14 day forecast. It's also a great place to get notifications for things like "Wind Warning", "Heat Warning", "Severe Thunderstorm" and so on.

A word of caution: any forecast over a few days away may change.

Windy App Icon

Windy.app is not as simple as the Weather Network but more fun for data visualization nerds like us. For example, you can study the wind speed in the area you are going to. Since vans are not aerodynamically built (big rectangular box), we avoid driving when wind gusts are quite above 75km/hour.

Get real time wind, wind gusts, precipitation and accumulated precipitation models. For surfers, check out swell data with the premium package or try the app MSM (Magicseaweed).

Cheap Fuel Near Me

Gas Buddy Icon

You could nickname Gas Buddy the “Wallet Buddy”. After all, the most variable cost in camper van rentals is fuel. Wallet Buddy can help save precious cents on fuel. This is especially handy as fuel prices increase.

The interface is straightforward to use. Search for the cheapest fuel near you by applying a filter for location and fuel type. You can also filter on gas station amenities like ATMs, pay phone, diesel, lottery, car wash and so on.

The Shell App

Shell Icon

Save 3 cents per litre at any Shell station. Pay for fuel or collect air miles without leaving your car with Shell EasyPay. Easy to keep track of all receipts in the apps too.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

AllTrails Icon

AllTrails is one of the best known hiking apps on the market. So widely used, it’s a reliable source for up-to-date information on local hikes. Plus, hikers post pictures and reviews of the hikes which give you additional pieces of advice about the mountain conditions.

Find hikes, rank their difficulties, read directions to the trailhead, and see weather forecasts. It’s an all-in-one package.

We’ve used this guy countless times brainstorming day hikes close to Calgary.

Topo Maps Canada Icon

We love Topo Maps Canada–it’s basic, efficient, effective. Download specific zones while in cell service. Once you download the area, zoom further to see the trails and topographic detail.

Then, this app works with no cell reception. The software uses GPS so you can see where you are on the path. Also beneficial is the map's ruler tool. Their ruler tool measures how much hike you have left with a swipe of the finger.

Word of warning: using this interface requires a sprinkle of navigational skills.

Fatmap Icon

Like AllTrails, FATMAP lists recommended routes along with their difficulty levels. The really neat component is the 3 dimensional view. You’ll get a detailed glimpse of the area in advance and truly know what to expect.

FATMAP app's 3D interface of a Jasper Canada mountain.

The home screen allows you to filter on your favourite van life activities–hiking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing to name a few. Other overlays show details like aspects, distance measurements and elevation profiles.

What’s the downside? It’s only available with cell service or an internet connection. So, search for your next trail in the breakfast line at Mcdonald's. The van life loves Mcdonald's for breakfast, by the way. There’s cheap breakfast, great coffee, clean bathrooms and (of course) free wifi.

Save and Sort Tourist Attractions

Google maps saved lists.

Google Maps is a one stop shop for creating travel itineraries! We find it helpful for those moments when your schedule is free and you’re unsure how to fill it.

Here’s an example. You’re driving Highway 93 from Banff to Jasper. That highway hosts endless viewpoints and tourist hot spots. You don’t want to forget your top picks so you save to a “Van Life 93” list outlining your requested pit stops. As you’re driving, Google will populate the map with your bookmarked locations. It can also show you the areas you have bookmarked and their relative position to your GPS location.

How to use Google Maps saved lists

Create a list: touch the bookmark looking button in the bottom nav bar in your Google Maps. This will bring you to the “Your Lists” tab. Hit the plus button to create a list.

Save to a list: there are a few ways to do this. The easiest is to click the “save” link (it looks like a bookmark) below a tourist spot’s description. That action brings up your list of lists (no pun intended). Select whichever one works with your organization method.

Review a list: when looking at the catalogue of lists, you can click right into one to view everything saved under it.

Donald Trump Is Banned from 37 Countries as Convicted Felon, Including Major Allies Like Canada and U.K.

If elected president again, Trump would need special permission to enter several key countries for maintaining foreign relations

Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.

Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.

Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

AP Photo/Alex Brandon

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.

George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

Win McNamee/Getty

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.

Countries That Deny Entry to Felons

  • Dominican Republic
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If Trump were elected to another term in the White House and chose to apply for special travel waivers, the irony would not go unnoticed.

The former president has often characterized foreigners as "criminals," and has campaigned on a promise to tighten U.S. travel restrictions, which would include shutting down the border and instating travel bans on people of certain nationalities and ideologies.

International Travel Apps for a Seamless Trip

travel app in canada

  • News and Tips
  • Travel Tips

Unless you’re joining a private tour for your next international trip, you’ll be doing most of the legwork. That means booking transportation and lodging, scheduling day trips and activities, and figuring out where to eat. It might even involve downloading a few international travel apps.

But even the most diligent planners and note-takers are prone to run into a few roadblocks while on vacation. Unexpected surprises like stomach bugs and missed connections happen to even the most prepared travelers.

And nothing ruins a vacation like a series of messy problems.

I can’t promise your next international trip will be seamless. But I do have suggestions about which international travel apps will simplify your trip. Let’s dive in.

For transportation: Rome2Rio & TripIt

  • Rome2Rio is a transportation planner that takes into account every possible option. That includes buses, trains, ferries, planes, and more. Not only does Rome2Rio make it easy to find an efficient path from Point A is to wherever Point B is, but it also takes cost into consideration. This app will help you save time, money, and sanity.
  • TripIt is a transportation and trip planner app that helps you keep your bookings organized. Simply upload your information and start forwarding your confirmation emails, from car rentals to connecting flights. From there, TripIt will create a functional and seamless itinerary.

For communication: Signal & Google Translate

  • Signal lets you stay in contact with your friends and family without opting for a pricey international service plan. Using encrypted channels, you can call, text, and send voice messages using Wi-Fi or standard data.
  • Google Translate is one of the most robust solutions for communicating across language boundaries . Plus, it has a photo function that lets you take pictures and then translate them in real time.

For health: The Jet Lag App & HealthTap

  • The Jet Lag App (aka Timeshifter) focuses on maintaining your sleep schedule when you travel to different time zones. This is particularly useful for anyone leaving the country for business or a major event, like a wedding. Simply enter your location information, along with your destination, then wait for tailored advice on how to sleep well.
  • HealthTap is a virtual healthcare app that can help when you’re in a bind. Getting sick while traveling internationally is never easy—especially when you start wondering if that tummy ache might signal something more severe. Using HealthTap, you can meet virtually with a US doctor who can help you decide if a medical intervention is necessary.

travel app in canada

For spending: Oanda Currency Converter & ATM Fee Saver

  • Oanda Currency Converter is a financial planning tool that helps you budget when abroad. All you need to do is enter your budgetary data and where you’ll be heading. From there, Oanda Currency Converter suggests how much to take out in certain currencies.
  • ATM Fee Saver finds the ATM with the lowest withdrawal fees in your immediate area. This is especially useful when you’re heading to tourist-heavy zones. ATM fees are usually exorbitant, which means this app can help you save hundreds for longer trips.

For day-to-day usage: Google Maps & HappyCow

  • Google Maps is probably already downloaded to your phone—and you should keep it handy for international trips. I regularly use Google Maps to get around European cities when I travel. While it might not work quite as well beyond Europe and North America, it’s becoming more common worldwide.
  • HappyCow locates restaurants with vegan menus and options. Even if you’re not a vegan, this app might prove helpful. I know that when my tummy is a little woozy, the last thing I want is a slab of meat and cheese. In other words, you can use it to find healthy and simple meal options if you get the Bubble Guts while abroad.

For emergencies: International SOS Assistance App

  • International SOS Assistance App is able to patch you through to emergency services in case of emergency. Before you head out on your trip, make sure to upload where you’ll be heading and where you’re from. From there, the app will do the heavy lifting. The International SOS Assistance App also works as a resource for those who might need mental health services or advice on security measures while traveling internationally.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance is the strategic stationing of CBP personnel at designated foreign airports to inspect travelers prior to boarding U.S.-bound flights. Today, CBP has more than 600 officers and agriculture specialists stationed at 15 Preclearance locations in 6 countries: Dublin and Shannon in Ireland; Aruba; Bermuda; Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Nassau in the Bahamas; and Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg in Canada.

In 2019, CBP personnel stationed abroad precleared 22 million travelers, representing over 16 percent of all commercial air travelers to the United States.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that.

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't.

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money.

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account.

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Downloading the Price Scanner and Converter is free from the App Store.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time.

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

Ireland on brink of T20 Cricket World Cup elimination following shock Canada defeat

Having lost their world cup opener against india on wednesday, ireland came into friday's clash with canada in search of their opening win of the tournament. .

Jeremy Gordon of Canada and Nicholas Kirton of Canada celebrate the wicket of Paul Stirling of Ireland during Canada\'s win over Ireland.

Ireland are on the brink of elimination from the T20 World Cup following a shock 12-run defeat against Canada in New York on Friday.

Having lost their World Cup opener against India on Wednesday, Ireland came into Friday's clash with Canada in search of their opening win of the tournament.

Canada, an associate nation who had never won a T20 World Cup match before, were well worth their 12-run victory, with Nicholas Kirton's 49 runs off 35 balls helping them post a respectable 137-7 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Sign up to IrishCentral's newsletter to stay up-to-date with everything Irish!

Requiring 138 to win, Ireland's chase began far too slowly, with the Irish batsmen failing to hit a single boundary between the sixth and 15th overs.

After 13 overs, the Irish had registered just 59 runs for the loss of six wickets, requiring a massive 79 runs from just 42 balls to win.

A fightback seemed unlikely at this point, but an impressive sixth-wicket stand from George Dockrell and Mark Adair returned 62 runs, keeping Ireland's slim hopes of victory alive.

Dockrell and Adair's impressive showing left Ireland requiring 17 runs from the final over to snatch an unlikely and scarcely-deserved victory, but they could not make any inroads against the bowling of Jeremy Gordon.

Forced to go for boundaries, Adair skied a drive that was easily caught by Gordon, who finished with an impressive return of two wickets for the loss of just 16 runs.

Dockrell, who finished 30 not out, and new man Barry McCarthy could only muster four runs off the final over as Gordon - and Canada - closed out a deserved victory.

Ireland must beat Pakistan and co-hosts USA in their final two group games if they are to have any hope of reaching the Super 8s, while they will also require favors from other fixtures.

Ireland next face the USA in Florida on June 14. The US have won both of their group matches at the World Cup, famously beating Pakistan in a Super Over on Thursday.

Two dozen United Airlines passengers fell ill on flight, had been on cruise

travel app in canada

Around two dozen passengers fell ill on a United Airlines flight from Vancouver, Canada to Houston, Texas on Friday.

Approximately 25 people traveling in a group of 75 had nausea, according to Capt. Sedrick Robinett of the Houston Fire Department. HFD evaluated three passengers upon the plane’s arrival at George Bush Intercontinental Airport but none were transported to the hospital, he said.

“Several passengers who had been on the same cruise and did not feel well were on United Flight 1528 from Vancouver to Houston Friday night,” United told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. The airline did not answer a question about what cruise line or ship the flyers had been traveling on before their flight.

“United Airlines is actively coordinating with health authorities to address the situation,” the airline’s statement continued. “As a precautionary measure, the aircraft will be removed from service and go through a deep cleaning before returning to service. Ensuring the health and safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

Is there a doctor on board?: Usually, yes. Here's why.

The Houston Health Department referred a request for comment to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Public health officers from CDC’s Houston Port Health Station worked with EMS to evaluate ill passengers on board," a CDC spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Most of the ill passengers reported mild GI symptoms. No passengers were noted to have a fever during the flight or upon public health assessment at landing. No passengers met CDC criteria for further public health follow-up. Passengers from the flight continued with their travel plans."

The news comes after dozens of passengers on a Condor flight from Mauritius to Frankfurt, Germany mysteriously became sick with nausea and vomiting last month.
