Liz Gilbert : In the end, I've come to believe in something I call "The Physics of the Quest." A force in nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity. The rule of Quest Physics goes something like this: If you're brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting, which can be anything from your house to bitter, old resentments, and set out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you.

What to Know

The scenery is nice to look at, and Julia Roberts is as luminous as ever, but without the spiritual and emotional weight of the book that inspired it, Eat Pray Love is too shallow to resonate.

eat travel love movie

Now streaming on:

Elizabeth Gilbert's book "Eat, Pray, Love," unread by me, spent 150 weeks on the New York Times best seller list and is by some accounts a good one. It is also movie material, concerning as it does a tall blond (Gilbert) who ditches a failing marriage and a disastrous love affair to spend a year living in Italy, India and Bali seeking to find the balance of body, mind and spirit.

During this journey, great-looking men are platooned at her, and a wise man, who has to be reminded who she is, remembers instantly, although what he remembers is only what she's just told him.

I gather Gilbert's "prose is fueled by a mix of intelligence, wit and colloquial exuberance that is close to irresistible" (New York Times Book Review), and if intelligence, wit and exuberance are what you're looking for, Julia Roberts is an excellent choice as the movie's star. You can see how it would be fun to spend a year traveling with Gilbert. A lot more fun than spending nearly two hours watching a movie about it. I guess you have to belong to the narcissistic subculture of Woo-Woo.

Here is a movie about Liz Gilbert. About her quest, her ambition, her good luck in finding only nice men, including the ones she dumps. She funds her entire trip, including scenic accommodations, ashram, medicine man, guru, spa fees and wardrobe, on her advance to write this book. Well, the publisher obviously made a wise investment. It's all about her, and a lot of readers can really identify with that. Her first marriage apparently broke down primarily because she tired of it, although Roberts at (a sexy and attractive) 43 makes an actor's brave stab at explaining they were "young and immature." She walks out on the guy ( Billy Crudup ) and he still likes her and reads her on the Web.

In Italy, she eats such Pavarottian plates of pasta that I hope one of the things she prayed for in India was deliverance from the sin of gluttony. At one trattoria she apparently orders the entire menu, and I am not making this up. She meets a man played by James Franco , about whom, enough said. She shows moral fibre by leaving such a dreamboat for India, where her quest involves discipline in meditation, for which she allots three months rather than the recommended lifetime. There she meets a tall, bearded, bespectacled older Texan ( Richard Jenkins ) who is without question the most interesting and attractive man in the movie, and like all of the others seems innocent of lust.

In Bali she revisits her beloved adviser Ketut Liyer ( Hadi Subiyanto ), who is a master of truisms known to us all. Although he connects her with a healer who can mend a nasty cut with a leaf applied for a few hours, his own skills seem limited to the divinations anyone could make after looking at her, and telling her things about herself after she has already revealed them.

Now she has found Balance, begins to dance on the high wire of her life. She meets Felipe ( Javier Bardem ), another divorced exile, who is handsome, charming, tactful, forgiving and a good kisser. He explains that he lives in Bali because his business is import-export, "which you can do anywhere" — although later, he explains she must move to Bali because "I live in Bali because my business is here." They've both forgotten what he said earlier. Unless perhaps you can do import-export anywhere, but you can only import and export from Bali when you live there. That would certainly be my alibi.

The audience I joined was perhaps 80 percent female. I heard some sniffles and glimpsed some tears, and no wonder. "Eat Pray Love" is shameless wish-fulfillment, a Harlequin novel crossed with a mystic travelogue, and it mercifully reverses the life chronology of many people, which is Love Pray Eat.

"I wanted to explore one aspect of myself set against the backdrop of each country, in a place that has traditionally done that one thing very well," writes Elizabeth Gilbert in her popular memoir Eat, Pray, Love . "I wanted to explore the art of pleasure in Italy, the art of devotion in India, and in Indonesia, the art of balancing the two."

Therein lies the premise and the problem with Eat, Pray, Love , at least in its frustrating (and comma-free) screen incarnation: The world exists as a kind of sprawling, full-service spa treatment for the soul, neatly compartmentalized to nourish the senses, the spirit and the heart. Nice therapy if you can swing it.

Though Eat Pray Love never loses the sour whiff of unexamined first-world privilege, its heroine does at least immerse herself in different cultures rather than expecting them to adapt to her. As played by a sun-kissed Julia Roberts, Liz has undertaken this adventure partly to open up to new experiences and loosen the vise-grip she's previously maintained over every aspect of her life, and the little tension that surfaces in her journey is owed to the push and pull between her itinerary -- as defined by the book pitch (and advance money) that made it all possible -- and her desire to feel truly unmoored and liberated. That's the essence of a true vacation, and she has to work hard for it.

Before Liz ever steps on a plane, events in her life conspire to do all the packing for her. Feeling shackled by a domestic situation she never wanted, Liz enters into a contentious divorce with her flaky husband (Billy Crudup), then immediately throws herself into a go-nowhere rebound fling with a young and none-too-talented actor (a charming James Franco). The book deal affords her an opportunity to flee Manhattan for a year and define herself apart from a relationship for once. Which raises an obvious rhetorical question: Is there any reason for us to tag along on her personal journey?

Love, Indonesian Style: While trying to recover after a messy divorce, Liz (Julia Roberts) meets Felipe (Javier Bardem), a Brazilian architect, in Bali.

Well, as a sensual experience, Eat Pray Love falls squarely in the tradition of other femme-centered cinematic staycations, like Enchanted April or Under the Tuscan Sun, and certainly it's transporting to watch Roberts consume pizza in Naples or drift along crystalline currents off the coast of Bali.

She also encounters a few fascinating seekers in her travels, including a prickly old Texan (Richard Jenkins), whom she befriends at an Indian ashram and a Brazilian businessman in Indonesia, played by Javier Bardem at his most devastatingly suave . In the film's travel-brochure paradise, they make for agreeable companions.

Trouble is, we're still stuck with Liz, who never passes up the chance to process her encounters into Oprah-fied nuggets of wisdom. At her worst, she's like a narcissistic tour guide who invites sightseers to marvel at the spectacular vistas and cascading waters inside her own head. Much as Eat Pray Love is about letting go, Liz's habit of imposing pop-psychological significance on every encounter suggests she's still her controlling self. She -- and the movie -- would have been better off letting the world speak for itself.

Where Was Eat Pray Love Filmed?

of Where Was Eat Pray Love Filmed?

‘Eat Pray Love’ follows Elizabeth Gilbert ( Julia Roberts ), who realizes that she needs to make significant changes in her life, starting with her unhappy marriage. After a divorce, she takes off on a journey around the world to discover herself. The three meaningful experiences in her travel take place in Italy, India, and Indonesia, where she discovers the pleasures of eating, praying, and true love. A few locations in these countries saw a significant increase in the number of tourists after this film’s release. Surely, many of you may want to know where the movie was filmed. Here is everything we know!

Eat Pray Love Filming Locations

‘Eat Pray Love’ was filmed in four countries: the USA, Italy, India, and Indonesia. The biographical movie is based on the book of the same name by Elizabeth Gilbert. Here are the details of the filming locations!

New York City

The incredible journey across the globe begins when Liz from New York decides to make essential life decisions. The film features several locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Several scenes show Liz going around the city and meeting David and her friend, Delia. These scenes were filmed at Walker Street, Tompkins Square Park, Manhattan Bridge, and Bowery & East 4th Street in Manhattan. One of the scenes between Liz and David was also filmed outside a building on 244 East 5th Street and 2nd Avenue, Manhattan.

eat travel love movie

Several locations in Brooklyn served as a filming site, including Cobble Hill, Book Court on 163 Court Street called Book Court, and Smith Laundromat on 137 Smith Street and Dean Street. Another scene between Liz and David was filmed at the Robin Des Bois Cafe on 195 Smith Street and Warren Street.

Rome, Italy

Rome is the primary Italian location for the “Eat” portion of this film. Castel Sant’Angelo, located on the River Tiber near The Vatican, is known to offer one of the best views of Rome. This is where Liz looks over the city and contemplates the new phase in her life. Liz’s time in Rome mostly revolves around the Piazza Navona.

eat travel love movie

The exterior shots of her apartment were filmed at 18 Via dei Portoghesi. Other filming locations in the area are Sant’Agnese in Agone, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, and Via dell’ Orso. The cafe where Liz meets Sofi is also located there. Several restaurants, such as Antica Trattoria Della Pace, Osteria Dell’Antiquario, and Restaurant Saint Lucia, feature in the movie.

eat travel love movie

It is almost impossible not to include the iconic The Colosseum if one is filming in Rome. Even though Liz does not visit it, we get a beautiful drone shot of the impressive historic structure. In the film, Liz also heads to Naples, the birthplace of pizza. The pizza scene is filmed at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, a restaurant that dates back to 1870.

Pataudi, India

A large chunk of Liz’s time in India is spent at an ashram. Since Elizabeth Gilbert never revealed the location of the actual ashram, those scenes were filmed at the Hari Mandir Ashram in Pataudi, Haryana. The ashram occupies 28 acres of land and also has a hostel and school. The film used several ashram staff as extras, especially for the “langar” (a communal meal) scenes. The production team worked for a month to prepare the sets ahead of the filming.

eat travel love movie

Julia Roberts and the crew stayed at the Pataudi Palace for the duration of filming in Pataudi. The palace, also known as Ibrahim Kothi, belongs to the Pataudi family. It was passed on from Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, a famous cricketer, to his son and Bollywood star, Saif Ali Khan .

eat travel love movie

Several sequences were also filmed in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, including the scene where Richard and Liz are enjoying a cup of tea together. This ancient town is situated on the banks of the River Ganga. A small part of the movie may have also been filmed in Delhi, the capital city of India.

Bali, Indonesia

Liz goes to Indonesia for the last leg of her trip, where she falls in love with Felipe. Ubud and Padang-Padang Beach in Bali are primary filming locations in Indonesia. The beautiful rice paddies where Liz is seen riding a bike is the Tegallalang Rice Terrace. Liz and Felipe also enjoy a stroll through the vibrant and bustling local market, which is actually the Ubud Market, AKA, Pasar Seni. It is located across the road from the famous Ubud Palace.

eat travel love movie

In the film, Liz goes to meet the Balinese medicine man Ketut Liyer. Those sequences have been filmed at Liyer’s actual house, which lies to the south of Ubud. The beach scenes were filmed at Padang-Padang, located in the Bukit Peninsula of Bali. However, the bar where Liz and Felipe meet was a set created for the movie.

Eat Pray Love Sites in Rome

Rome and Naples in the Movie, Eat Pray Love

eat travel love movie

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Eat Pray Love, the movie based on the book by Elizabeth Gilbert has scenes set in Rome and Naples, Italy. Elizabeth Gilbert, played by Julia Roberts in the movie, spends her time in Rome searching for beauty and exploring Italian food in the first section, Eat. Here are Rome locations you'll see in the movie, Eat Pray Love, although some of them feature more prominently in the book.

Roman Colosseum

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

In the movie, you'll see a great shot of the Roman Colosseum, the most popular tourist site in Rome. If you plan to visit the Colosseum, find out  how to buy Colosseum tickets to avoid the ticket line , which can be very long.

Piazza Navona

TripSavvy / Stella Levantesi

Piazza Navona is home to more of Rome's famous fountains including Bernini's Fontana Dei Fiumi . The large square still retains its oval shape from when it was built by the Romans for chariot races and athletic competitions. Today, in addition to several churches, it's ringed by expensive restaurants and cafes. If you're on a food quest in Rome, be sure to try the famous tartufo dessert.

The Pantheon, the best-preserved building of ancient Rome, has a spectacular dome and features free admission. In ancient Rome , it was the temple of all the gods but it was turned into a church in the 7th century. For dinner try Armando al Pantheon , Salita de' Crescenzi, 31. After dinner, splurge on a drink outside in the Pantheon's lively Piazza di Rotonda , a beautiful square to visit at night.

Trevi Fountain

 TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Everyone who visits Rome has to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, one of Rome's most famous tourist stops, to ensure a return to Rome. Other movies that feature a Trevi Fountain scene are Three Coins in the Fountain and La Dolce Vita . The ornate Baroque fountain was completed in 1762 at the end point of an ancient Roman aqueduct.

San Crispino Gelato

San Crispino has long been touted as the best gelateria in Rome and Elizabeth Gilbert's description of tasting their gelato (in the book) will make you wish you were there. Here you'll eat gelato only, no cones to interfere with the flavors. I've read that there are three San Crispino shops, this one is near the Trevi Fountain.

Jewish Ghetto

Rome's Jewish Ghetto is home to the interesting Roman Jewish cuisine that includes the famous fried artichokes, Carciofi alla Giudia . The area became a ghetto for Jews in the 16th century and you can visit the Synagogue and Jewish Museum as well as the many bakeries, restaurants, and shops.

Borghese Gardens

The beautiful Borghese Gardens are a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Rome. It's hard to believe you are still in the city. Inside the gardens is the Villa Borghese , now an art museum.

Shopping in Rome

You'll see a few shots of Rome's fashionable shopping streets, including Via Condotti, in the movie.

Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Naples

During her time in Rome, Elizabeth Gilbert takes a trip to Naples, the birthplace of pizza. Some people think that da Michele, in business since 1870, serves the best pizza in the world. They serve only two kinds of pizza—Margherita (said to be the original pizza made for Queen Margarita) and marinara (without Mozzarella but with lots of garlic and oregano). On Via Colletta just off Corso Umberto , inexpensive.

Here are my top inspirational travel movies that are similar to Eat Pray Love . Drop me a comment at the end of the post and let me know which one is your favourite!

1. Nomadland

Released at the end of 2020, Nomadland is exactly the sort of poignant, touching film we all needed to put a full-stop on the tumultuous year that was.

Based on a true story, it stars Frances McDormand as Fern, a woman whose life is turned upside down after her husband passes away and her little town in Nevada is literally wiped off the map by the 2008 recession.

“What the nomads are doing is not that different than what the pioneers did. I think Fern’s part of an American tradition.” fern’s sister, nomadland

Fern takes to the road in a camper van, working odd jobs to satisfy her need to contribute to society. The people she meets along the way – real individuals who play themselves in the film – each teach her a lesson about life, love or loss.

She joins a temporary caravan and finds a community, but she’s constantly drawn back to the road. When she visits her sister, she’s forced to grapple with the questions: Why did I leave home in the first place? Did I find what I was looking for?

How to watch it: Rent or buy on Amazon Prime .

2. Paris Can Wait

There’s nothing like a road trip through France to reawaken the senses. Paris Can Wait (2017) follows Anne, a middle-aged woman at a crossroads in life, as she makes an impromptu trip from Cannes to Paris with her husband’s business partner in tow.

Riding in a blue Peugeot, the pair draw out their route, making detours in search of picturesque views, good food and wine.

This film is all about spontaneity, slowing down, and taking the time to enjoy the finer things in life. Who better than a handsome Frenchman to teach one such life lessons!

Like Elizabeth in Eat Pray Love , the protagonist in Wild (2014), Cheryl, finds herself at a juncture in life with more than a few demons to overcome.

To give herself a much-needed confidence boost and kick-start her new life after her divorce, she decides to set herself a seemingly insurmountable physical challenge.

“I was amazed that what I needed to survive could be carried on my back. And, most surprising of all, that I could carry it.” cheryl, wild

Based on a true story, Wild follows Cheryl as she hikes the Pacific Crest Trail across the continental US. This movie is as much about mental fortitude as physical endurance.

If you like Wild , check out this list of awesome adventure travel films .

Maybe you’d rather be wandering the streets of Florence then trekking through the Australian desert.. Like Wild , Tracks (2014) proves that we all define ‘adventure’ in our own way.

“The two important things I did learn were that you are as powerful and strong as you allow yourself to be, and that the most difficult part of any endeavour is taking the first step, making the first decision.” robyn, tracks

When Robyn, a young Brisbane woman, sets out to walk from Alice Springs to Western Australia’s coast, she has no idea of the challenges that lay ahead.

This inspirational travel movie explores solo travel and the restorative power of solitude.

5. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

If you like Eat Pray Love but you haven’t seen the cult classic The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), you need to fix that immediately! This movie has a similar tone, exploring themes of introspection, discovery and healing through travel.

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” walter, the secret life of walter mitty

Based on a fictional short story, this movie tracks one man’s escape from corporate America as he turns his romantic and far-flung travel fantasies into reality.

He’s on the hunt for something specific – but what he ends up finding along the way is totally unexpected.

6. Enchanted April

An oldie but a goodie, Enchanted April (1991) tells the story of four British women who respond to a newspaper advertisement and end up taking a life-changing spring trip to stay in a castle in Italy .

The change of scenery does its job, and as each of the women reflect on their marriages, they also find common ground and forge new friendships.

Interestingly, this classic film was shot on location in Portofino at the Castello Brown – the very same castle where Elizabeth von Arnim, author of the book the film is based on, stayed in the 1920s.

7. Everything is Illuminated

Despite being a huge fan of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel this film is based on, I must confess that Everything is Illuminated (2005) is still on my watch list! By the time you read this, there’s a good chance I would have watched it multiple times.

“I have reflected many times upon our rigid search. It has shown me that everything is illuminated in the light of the past.” alex, everything is illuminated

This is another film about a deeply personal quest for meaning. Alex, the main character, sets off from his home in the US to Ukraine to track down the woman who saved his grandfather during WWII. Along the way, he must confront the pain of the past once and for all.

This film examines the impact where you come from has on where you’re going – all in a lighthearted, poignant and slightly quirky format.

8. The Beautiful Country

Like the previous title on this list of inspirational travel movies, The Beautiful Country (2005) is all about embarking on the one journey some people were born to take:

The one to discover your roots. It follows Binh, a young Vietnamese man, who was abandoned by his father, an American GI, during the Vietnam War.

Binh’s determination to connect with father and discover his true identity compels him to leave his village in Southern Vietnam behind and travel all the way to rural Texas.

It’s an epic 6-month saga fraught with disaster; but for Binh, it’s worth it to unravel the mysteries of his past. This film also looks at themes of belonging and community, and is very interesting from a historical perspective.

9. The Tree

Proving that it’s never too late for an adventure, The Tree (2017) is the sweet, life-affirming tale of an 88-year-old widow who travels across middle America to visit a childhood friend.

Despite concerns from family, headstrong Dorothy is set her ways and wants to conquer the road back home from Kansas to Indiana on her own terms. There’s nothing fancy about this film – it’s subtle and pure, and looks at confronting issues such as ageing and independence in a soft, relatable way.

The story was inspired by the director’s mother and her best friend – how cool is that!

10. Midnight in Paris

This one is for the romantics. Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (2011) is a tour of the city through the eyes of a young couple. It’s a visual feast with a rousing soundtrack. If you’ve visited Paris, you’ll recognise many of the locations.

“…there’s nothing happening on Jupiter or Neptune. But from way out in space you can see these lights, the cafes, people drinking and singing. For all we know, Paris is the hottest spot in the universe.” gil, midnight in paris

But, there’s a twist. After the two lead characters have a lovers’ spat, Gil decides to walk Paris’s streets alone. While out late one night, he is swept up in a time-warp that sees him travel back to the Paris of a different epoch.

Part fantasy, part romantic comedy, this is a unique and memorable film about love, passion, and the beauty of getting lost.

11. Away We Go

When Verona and Burt learn they’re expecting their first child, they decide to embark on a journey across America to find a place to raise their baby.

Similar to Eat Pray Love , Away We Go (2009) is about the search for belonging and the quest for clarity when life presents you with a difficult decision.

As the couple crisscross the country visiting relatives and friends, they gradually start to appreciate the true meaning of ‘home’ and how it’s often a fluid concept. This indie film is a lighthearted comedy and a very easy watch.

12. Chocolat

While there isn’t a lot of travel going on in this classic film, the evocative setting of Chocolat (2001) will transport you instantly to small-town France.

Remember in Eat Pray Love when Elizabeth starts learning Italian and almost instantly feels more grounded in her surroundings? The similarly free-spirited protagonist of Chocolat also goes to great lengths to form bonds with her adoptive community.

“I think we’ve got to measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create and who we include.” Père Henri, chocolat

In the story, Vianne and her daughter move to a small, conservative village to open up a chocolate shop. They fight to win over the hearts (and taste buds) of their neighbours, eventually ingratiating themselves into the community.

Romance, adventure, poignant life-lessons – this uplifting story has it all.

13. Il Postino

I hadn’t heard of Il Postino (1994) until I visited the Aeolian Islands off the Sicilian coastline last summer. Parts of the movie were filmed on the island of Salina (we got to visit many of the locations), making this a cult-classic Italian film .

The plot line reminds me a bit of Chocolat . Pablo, a poet exiled from Cuba, travels to the tiny Italian island to seek refuge. Once there, he meets Mario, a local resident who is employed as a postman with the sole duty of delivering Pablo’s letters.

“Poetry doesn’t belong to those who write it; it belongs to those who need it.” mario, il postino

The two form a bond and Pablo teaches Mario the art of poetry, a tool he uses to woo a barmaid and bring the stories of his local community to live.

The picturesque setting combined with the motif of ‘fitting in’ in a foreign place make this a wonderful film for travel lovers.

14. Roman Holiday

Speaking of Italy – Audrey Hepburn’s Roman Holiday (1953) is another cult classic travel film set in Bel Paese . Interestingly, this movie has its own genre. It emerged during what’s know as the ‘Hollywood on the Tiber’ era, when international directors flocked to Rome to use the enchanting capital as a backdrop to their romance films.

“Rome. By all means. Rome!” princess ann, roman holiday

Watching Roman Holiday is like taking a virtual tour around the Rome of the 1950s. The story line almost plays second fiddle to the location.

In the film, Princess Ann escapes her highly regimented life of luxury (not dissimilar to the idea of escaping from corporate America, a theme you see in many modern-day films like Eat Pray Love ) and falls in love with a newsman who shows her a new side of the city, and a new side of herself.

15. Year by the Sea

When it comes to self-discovery and self-improvement, the ‘sea change’ is a motif that repeats across many of these films. In Year by the Sea (2016), the sea change is quite literal!

It follows Joan (a wife and mother) who decides to leave her husband in search of a new life in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

As she tries to start afresh, she oscillates between feeling guilty and empowered, eventually turning to her local community and a mentor for encouragement. Like Eat Pray Love , this movie also features a male hero – described as ‘a sexy fisherman’ in the film’s synopsis!

Year by the Sea proves just how powerful escaping the mental confines of one’s comfort zone by physically relocating to a new place can really be.

16. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

I automatically put this film into the ‘oldies’ box when it was released; but truthfully I love it! The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) combines British humour (the best in the world – admit it!) with themes of self-discovery, breaking stereotypes and shifting perspectives through travel.

“Everything will be all right in the end… If it’s not all right then it’s not yet the end.” deborah, the best exotic marigold hotel

In the charming story, a group of retirees travel to India to stay at the eponymous hotel, most as part of a quest to give their life new meaning. Relationships form, revelations unfold, and group dynamics produce some interesting and very humorous situations.

Filmed in Rajasthan (Jaipur and Udaipur), this movie is a sensual feast – you can almost taste India in some of the scenes.

Looking for something new to watch? Here are 23 inspirational travel movies like Eat Pray Love – including romcoms, docos and dramas.

17. Under the Tuscan Sun

Just like Eat Pray Love , this movie is based on the real-life memoirs of an author who transports herself to the other side of the world in the hope of transforming her life.

As the name suggests, Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) is set in the Tuscan countryside – the perfect backdrop for such an adventure.

“Where you are is who you are. The further inside you the place moves, the more your identity is intertwined with it. Never casual, the choice of place is the choice of something you crave.” frances, under the tuscan sun

Leaving her old reality (and cheating husband) in San Francisco behind, Frances joins a group tour of Italy in search of inspiration. She winds up buying a villa (we’ve all fantasised about it!) and starting afresh in the idyllic town of Cortona.

The eclectic bunch of people from all over the world that she surrounds herself with all come to teach her important life lessons.

18. A Walk in the Woods

You’re probably familiar with seminal American travel author Bill Bryson. Did you know that one of his novels was transformed into a movie? A Walk in the Woods (2015) draws on Bryson’s 1998 memoir, dramatising his overland journey along the scenic Appalachian Trail.

“Well they say the Appalachian Trail is like life. You don’t know what’s going to come next but you give it your best shot.” bill, a walk in the woods

Not wanting to complete the long hike alone, he calls on an old buddy to join him. The two butt heads constantly, but they end up solidifying their friendship.

As with the other inspirational travel films on this list that involve physical endurance, A Walk in the Woods conveys much wisdom about the human spirit and our impulse to press on through times of hardship. This isn’t my favourite film (I found the pace a bit slow), but it’s an easy watch nonetheless!

19. Vicky Cristina Barcelona

What would you do if a tall, dark and handsome stranger offered to whisk you and your girlfriend away for a weekend in the Spanish countryside? This is exactly the predicament Vicky and Cristina find themselves in when they travel to Barcelona .

“Life is dull. Life is full of pain. And this is a chance for something special.” Juan Antonio, vicky cristina barcelona

The second Woody Allen film on this list, Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2009) is simple, but extremely entertaining. Juan Antonio is one of my favourite movie characters of all time – he delivers so many great one-liners throughout the film.

The trio’s Spanish dalliance (it becomes a foursome when Juan Antonio’s passionate and slightly crazy ex-wife gets involved) is romantic, hilarious, and a train wreck waiting to happen. Similar to Eat Pray Love, it explores impulsiveness and the transformative power of ‘just say yes’.

Rendered in black and white, award-winning indie film Roma (2018) is subtle and stirring. Set in the 1970s against the backdrop of some of the most iconic landmarks in Mexico City , it tells the semi-autobiographical story of an affluent family and their housekeeper.

The setting may be unfamiliar, but the themes this movie explores are universal and will surely hit close to home.

“We are alone. No matter what they tell you, we women are always alone.” sofia, roma

A marriage in turmoil, an affair, a secret pregnancy – the characters’ personal trials are sharpened by the political and social instability unfolding around them. This film is an interesting lesson on Mexico’s modern history .

Travel comes into the story when the two lead female characters embark on a trip to stay at a friend’s hacienda and again later in the film when they travel together to the beach. Both trips are intended to restore clarity to a very cloudy situation, and the women grow to form a unbreakable bond.

How to watch it: Stream it on Netflix .

21. Dare To Be Wild

One of the lesser-known movies like Eat Pray Love that features on this list, Dare To Be Wild (2018) received mixed reviews when it was released. Many critics say it’s far too sappy and cliched – I’ll let you be the judge!

The true story this movie is based on is quite an incredible one. It recalls a chapter in the life of Mary Reynolds, an Irish landscape designer and environmental activist, whose life mission was to change the way people think about nature.

In the film, Mary and environmentalist Christy Collard join forces and travel to Ethiopia in search of inspiration. Mary’s final destination is London, where she hopes to realise her dream of showcasing nature’s wild beauty at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.

22. The Darjeeling Limited

For me, nothing beats the nostalgia, romance and poignancy of Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited (2007). Part overland journey, part personal quest, it follows three brothers as they travel across India by train in an effort to mend their relationship and find spiritual enlightenment.

“I want us to make this trip a spiritual journey where each of us seek the unknown, and we learn about it. Can we agree to that?” francis, the darjeeling limited

The soundtrack is a delight, and although it’s definitely a romanticised depiction of train travel in India, this movie put the Sub-Continent on my radar, never to be erased (I will travel across India by train one day if it’s the last thing I do!).

The idea of releasing one’s baggage, lightening the load, is a beautiful, universal motif that carries across this film.

Another personal favourite of mine, Lion (2016) tells the incredible true story of an Australian-Indian man’s search for his birth mother.

In Eat Pray Love , Elizabeth sets off in search of ‘something’, not knowing what it is, but having a good idea of where she might need to go to find it. In Lion , Saroo’s situation is quite the opposite – he’s looking for something very solid and real, he just doesn’t know where to start.

“Every night I imagine that I’m walking those streets home and I know every single step of the way, and I whisper in her ear, ‘I’m here’.” saroo, lion

I can’t tell you how moving this film and the book it’s based on are. You just have to watch it to see what I mean!

I particularly like the scenes at the end of the film when Saroo travels to India and has an opportunity to compare his memories and fantasies with reality.

24. Up in the Air

Up in the Air (2009) is a travel movie of a slightly different ilk. The lead character, Ryan, is a corporate type who flies constantly for work and aspires to earn 10 million frequent flyer miles. When he strikes up a relationship with Alex whilst in transit, he starts to question his motivations.

“Tonight, most people will be welcomed home by jumping dogs and squealing kids…tonight, they’ll sleep, the stars will wheel forth from their daytime hiding places and one of those lights slightly brighter than the rest will be my wing-tail passing over.” ryan, up in the air

Rather than exploring travel as an escape, this movie conversely paints ‘normal life’ as an escape from travel. Themes of impermanence and escapism emerge as Ryan is forced to weigh up the pros and cons of his travel-heavy lifestyle, reflecting on the old adage ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’.

This movie also imparts some practical lessons, like the benefits of travelling with carry-on only and tricks for getting through airport security more quickly!

25. The Terminal

Like the title above, The Terminal (2004) takes the theme of travel to heart and is mostly set in an airport rather than an exotic location. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, stick with it – this Steven Spielberg movie is actually very good!

“I’ve been waiting my whole life, I just don’t know what the hell for.” viktor, the terminal

The movie begins when a bureaucratic glitch leaves Viktor stranded in that otherworldly, interstitial space most travellers loathe: The airport lounge. He never makes it to his destination, but his experience is life-changing nonetheless.

This movie shows that oftentimes, you don’t have to travel far (or at all, really) for a transformation to take place.

26. Lost in Translation

Like Eat Pray Love , Lost in Translation (2003) is a movie about a fish-out-of-water travel experience. Set in Tokyo – mostly in a hotel room – it’s a comedy drama that examines themes of loneliness, culture shock and detachment in a poignant, profound way.

“The more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you.” bob, lost in translation

Bob and Charlotte strike up an unlikely friendship when they meet at their Tokyo hotel. They end up confiding in each other about their respective relationship struggles.

This movie illustrates how being in a foreign environment is a like a pressure cooker for relationships, forging friendships in a matter of hours. It also looks at the theme of finding familiarity in within the complete unknown.

27. The Trip to Spain

Here’s a lighthearted comedy to end the list! The third film in the British movie series based off the hit TV series of the same name, The Trip to Spain (2017) follows Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan (who play themselves in the dramatised film) as they travel together through Spain.

‘Misery loves company’ and ‘wherever you go, there you are’ are the resounding themes of this movie. As the duo do their best to live in the moment, real life keeps on intruding. It’s a comedy for sure, but there are dark and thoughtful undercurrents to this film as well.

Quite apart from the story line, this movie is a great way to feast on Spanish scenery and food through the screen. I must admit I let out a little squeal when I saw the pair dining at the Parador in Sos del Rey, the same little village I visited on my Spanish road trip many years ago.

If you enjoy this film, The Trip to Greece (2020), The Trip to Italy (2014) and The Trip (2011) are also worth watching (back to back if you want to make a movie marathon of it!).

Travel Inspiration From The Movie ‘Eat Pray Love’

BannerImg

Based on Elizabeth Gilbert ’s autobiographical book, the 2010 Eat Pray Love movie has become one of the top films people talk about when looking for travel inspiration. The movie was so popular that women became desperate to re-create Gilbert’s stories by leaving behind their lives to re-trace and reinvent themselves. This movie is quite an inspiration as it shows the power of travel for self-betterment. But what is this movie all about really?

Eat Pray Love tells the story of Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) who had everything she wanted in life. She is a successful New York writer who is loved by all. But now that she is divorced and at a turning point in her life, she is confused about where to and how to start again. Unable to find her “inner balance,” she abandons it all to travel the world for a year and find herself to eat, pray, and love along the way. This is a chance for her to step out of her comfort zone and embark on a quest of self-discovery. Read on to know more about the three-stop worldwide tour of Liz Gilbert through Italy, India, and Bali.

Table of Contents

Eat Pray Love: EAT (Italy)

First up, we get “EAT,” as Liz dutifully wolfs her way through lots of delicious food in Rome, and in doing so learns to enjoy life with the help of another tourist (Tuva Novotny), and an Italian language coach (Luca Argentero). She spends all her time in Italy searching for beauty and exploring Italian food. The camera lingers lovingly on heaping plates of pasta and pizza, enough to make everyone ravenous. Just try not to laugh at the scene where reed-thin Roberts and the equally slender Novotny struggle to get into their ‘large’ jeans while agreeing to continue enjoying pizza, even if they do get muffin tops in the process. Filming cast and crew were so touched and inspired by the warmth that they actually added a scene in Naples (at Naples’s most beautiful churches, Pio Monte della Misericordia).

Eat Pray Love: PRAY (India)

cast of eat pray love

The film’s second stop is at an unnamed Indian ashram, where we get the “PRAY” portion of the Eat Pray Love movie. It is at an ashram in India that she learnt to pray and had a closer connection to God. Her stay here forced her to confront the emotional baggage she carried. Here, Liz meets ‘Richard from Texas’ (Richard Jenkins) who (after some resistance of course) helps her overcome her struggles with meditation, and shows her how to forgive herself – though for what remains a bit unclear. Perhaps all the pasta she ate in Italy? However, most aspects of the time in India are reduced to stereotypes and clichés, from the girl who doesn’t want an arranged marriage, to not touching the bottle of ‘Thums Up’.

Eat Pray Love: LOVE (Bali)

The third section, “LOVE,” takes Liz to Bali, where we meet the toothless guru Ketut. He helps Liz find a balance between the loving life from Italy and the spirituality from India. But really, it’s about her falling in love with the irresistible Brazilian divorcee Felipe (Javier Bardem). Because learning to love yourself is great, but it’s just as good to find the perfect man. As Liz literally sails off into the sunset at the end, you might just find yourself feeling a little empty (no matter how much pasta you’ve caved in and eaten after the sequence in Rome).

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly About The Eat Pray Love Movie

This film is shameless (and unapologetic) wish fulfillment, romance mixed with travel, disguised as the story of an upper-middle-class American woman on a spiritual quest. The writer Elizabeth Gilbert says, “I wanted to explore the art of pleasure in Italy, the art of devotion in India, and the art of balancing the two in Indonesia.”

While there is obviously nothing wrong with a woman being unhappy in what seems to be a perfect life, or in wanting to ‘find herself,’ the film completely refuses to address the privilege involved in Liz Gilbert’s story. How many of us would love to throw everything away and travel the globe but can’t because of responsibilities and finances? I’m willing to bet it’s quite a lot.

It doesn’t help that the film perpetuates the stereotype of the “Spiritual East” where westerners come to find enlightenment, nor that the journey of finding oneself ends with finding a man.

Despite all these deliberate clichés, the film has quite a lot going for it. Roberts plays the role of Elizabeth Gilbert beautifully, turning on that photogenic, 1000-watt smile of hers just enough times to convince us to root for her, even after you’ve found yourself wanting to hit the screen at her whining about finding herself but not actually trying. Perhaps her most relatable moment is when she tries and fails to avoid distractions while meditating.

It is also truly beautiful to look at. With the scenic locales of green rice fields and majestic ruins, it’s easy to forget all its flaws and just enjoy the vibrant destinations. The rich cinematography creates a sort of idyllic sheen over both the sets and the characters. However, this, combined with the unhurried pace of the film creates a somewhat unrealistic view of travel. It also loses something by glossing over the struggles that most solo women travelers actually face.

Whatever else the film does for you it’s sure to make you want to jump on a plane to Italy, India, or Bali. (Or maybe just make you want to order an extra-large pizza).

Both the book and movie give out the same message: wanting to set off on a self-discovery journey all by yourself. Find out what makes you happy and do it without thinking twice.

Julia Roberts who played the character Liz Gilbert reportedly stayed in the Pataudi Palace with her three children during the shoot. The entire portion in India was filmed at Hari Mandir Ashram in Pataudi about 40 kilometers from Gurgaon.

“Learn your way around loneliness” and “To travel is worth any cost or sacrifice”, both written by Elizabeth Gilbert are quotes that help tell the story from the movie.

Going on a trip to heal oneself from a severe emotional or spiritual crisis is popularly known as an Eat Pray Love moment.

Watch the movie Eat pray love on Netflix, Hotstar, Voot or Jio Cinema.

1. Before Sunrise

For those who have ever dreamed of making an unexpected connection with a stranger while abroad, this movie is for you. Before Sunrise is a 1995 indie film that tells the story of Jesse and Céline, who meet on a train and decide to explore Vienna together on a whim.

They walk the streets of Vienna at night, talking the whole time about their views on life and love while knowing that when the night is over, they will part ways and likely never see each other again. The movie makes Austria’s capital the perfectly enchanting backdrop to Jesse and Céline’s growing connection, and the soft glow of the evening streets lend a sense of melancholy to their short time together.

You can watch Before Sunrise on its own, or follow the rest of Jesse and Céline’s story in the sequels, Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

2. Letters to Juliet

On a trip to Verona with her fiancé, Sophie visits Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s House), where it’s customary for lovelorn visitors to leave letters and messages for the Shakespearean heroine (or in this version of Verona anyway).

When Sophie discovers an unanswered letter from decades ago, she writes back with the help of the Secretaries of Juliet. Her response brings Claire, the author of the letter, to Verona with her grandson Charlie, and the trio embark on a journey through Tuscany in hopes of finding Claire’s long-lost love.

The movie features gorgeous shots of the Italian countryside, and it’s a celebration of love that will melt even the coldest of hearts. After you watch it, you might just want to hop on a plane to Verona yourself and leave your own letter to Juliet!

3. The Proposal

When Margaret Tate, a high-powered publishing executive, finds out that she might be deported back to her home country of Canada, she enlists the help of her assistant Andrew to act as her fiancé. To convince the immigration agent of their relationship, the two travel to Andrew’s hometown of Sitka, Alaska to meet his family where, spoiler alert: they fall in love.

While the movie was not actually filmed in Alaska , seeing the contrast between the towering skyscrapers that Margaret is accustomed to and snow-capped mountains that Andrew calls home will make you feel like you’ve taken a quick getaway. This formulaic rom-com hits all the right spots: a fake relationship turned real against a scenic backdrop, with no shortage of charming hijinks.

4. Eat, Pray, Love

In all its forms, Eat, Pray, Love is a travel classic. Follow Liz Gilbert as she embarks on a year-long travel journey around the world after a difficult divorce to regain balance in her life. This movie is a visual dream, featuring sweeping panoramic views of Italy , India , and Indonesia , along with close-up shots of glorious, mouth-watering food.

The storyline is dreamy and inspirational, and while not everyone can take a year off from their lives to wander the world, hopefully savouring a delicious margherita pizza in Naples is in your future.

5. The Holiday

Separated by the Atlantic Ocean, Iris and Amanda are two women who exchange houses for the holidays in an effort to escape their respective romantic troubles. New romances spark for both of them in this holiday favourite, and what starts as a spontaneous getaway ends up being much more.

Amanda’s modern California mansion could not be more different from Iris’ cosy English cottage, and it’s incredibly entertaining to watch them get accustomed to their new settings. This movie is a win for anyone whose favourite part of travelling is being spontaneous and opening your heart to something new.

6. Crazy Rich Asians

The glitz and glamour of Singapore’s luxurious side is on full display in this vibrant movie where Rachel Chu, a young Manhattanite, travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick to meet his family.

Unbeknownst to her, his family is part of the ultra-wealthy Singaporean elite, and they’re experts at throwing lavish and extravagant parties. Unfortunately, there’s trouble in paradise for the pair when Rachel realises Nick’s family disapproves of their relationship.

This movie is a glittering guide to Singapore’s best sights, from sweeping nighttime shots of Gardens by the Bay to glimmering aerial views of Marina Bay Sands with fireworks exploding overhead. The movie also features glamour shots of Newton Food Center — where you can go to get a taste of authentic Singapore — and Sentosa, a prime Singaporean weekend getaway destination.

No wonder travel searches skyrocketed following the movie’s release — after watching this movie, you’ll want to add Singapore to your travel list, too.

7. Roman Holiday

In this classic tale of mistaken identity, a crown princess falls in love with an American reporter when she decides to explore Rome on her own on a state visit. Audrey Hepburn’s first film doubles as a scenic romp, hitting quintessential Roman spots like the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum, and the Trevi Fountain.

Princess Ann’s zeal for exploring Rome on her own terms speaks to the souls of intrepid travellers everywhere, and you’ll love watching her careen through the streets of Rome on a vespa, eat gelato on the Spanish Steps, dine al fresco, and fall in love on her Roman holiday.

8. Call Me By Your Name

Set in Northern Italy in 1983, Call Me By Your Name tells the story of the love that blossoms between Elio, the young son of an archaeology professor, and Oliver, a visiting American graduate student.

Filming for the movie took place in Lombardy, and the province is rendered beautifully, with its ornate architecture, sunlit piazzas, and lush countryside, making for the perfect setting for this melancholy love story.

9. The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

On the night before they’re slated to go their separate ways, a group of lifelong friends devise a plan to say connected during their first summer apart: by sharing a pair of thrift-shop jeans that inexplicably fit each of their figures perfectly.

This coming-of-age story follows the four girls — and the magical jeans — to Greece , South Carolina, Mexico , and Maryland, as they journey through a summer of first loves, losses, and heartbreak.

Being away from the people you love is one of the hardest parts of travelling, and this movie serves as a great reminder that nothing can come between best friends — including time and distance.

Travel Movies: New ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ Trailer

World Hum has just posted the new trailer for the upcoming ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ book-turned-movie :

Though it’s not normally a film I’d check out, I’m all too curious after having read the book. It’ll most definitely be a chick flick and, to be honest, I rather pooh-pooh’d the concept when I first heard Julia Roberts was playing the lead role. But … she actually looks appropriately cast to play Elizabeth Gilbert.

Not sure how the movie will be, but it’s safe to say that it will inspire some to embrace long term travel! Even though the book wasn’t my favorite travel memoir – it did bring the idea of breaking away from career/life and traveling for longer than 2 weeks to the mainstream – and for that I’m thankful

Hmmm, interesting. I really liked the book (except the India bit which I found too long and tedious) and have been waiting to see how it’ll turn out as a movie. But I’m a bit vary of having Julia Roberts cast as the lead. Thinks it might be more interesting if it’s someone less….over-powering?!

Anyways, guess we’ll just have to see! It might be good afterall!

Thanks so much for sharing the movie trailer for ‘Eat, Pray, Love’! I loved the book and look forward to the movie version with Julia Roberts.

I know there are a of of mixed emotions about that book- one of my friends actually put it down mid way and never returned to it! I happen to like the book and some of the running themes- (visiting places that all start with “I” Italy, India and Indonesia).

Another interesting book turned movie is “Life of Pi” written by Yann Martel. It’s in pre-production and scheduled to come out in 2011. Thanks for sharing!

I am looking forward to the movie. I enjoyed the book, but did not love it.

It seems like this movie will be inspirational for many who have toyed with the idea, but have been letting the excuses get in the way.

The Balinese portion of Eat Pray Love is DEEPLY flawed. The whole premise of her calling her Balinese friend a liar because she did not buy the land is completely off for a number of reasons. It takes many MONTHS for Balinese to find and secure land. Ms Gilbert was in Bali for only 4 months.. also the Balinese believe that if a gift is given it is given with the heart and no thanks are neccessary to the giver. Ms Gilbert book is about her “rescuing” a Balinese woman and getting pissed cos she did not feel appreciated enough. No understanding at all!

Counting down the days… till then doing some philanthropic Eat, Pray, Love themed shopping to benefit National Wildlife Federation:

Take a peak… :)

Eat Pray Love Filming Locations in Rome (and Naples) + Map!

Eat Pray Love Filming Locations in Rome (and Naples) | almostginger.com

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer here .

I don’t know if this is something I should freely admit or take to my grave… but I’m going with the former.  Eat Pray Love  is my most read book BY FAR . I read it at least once a year. For someone who maybe reads ten books in a year, that’s a stupidly high percentage. I watch Eat Pray Love  (2010) a couple of times a year too. So, obvs I made a point of visiting all the  Eat Pray Love  filming locations on my trip to Rome in May last year.

The memoir, and now the movie, tells the story of a clichéd single woman’s mid-life crisis as she tries to ‘find herself’ by travelling the world. Except this story is the OG cliché. The cliché exists because of Eat Pray Love.

Author Elizabeth Gilbert finds herself divorcing her husband aged 34, sinks into a deep depression and isn’t sure who she is anymore. She pledges a year to herself: four months in Rome, Italy because she has been learning Italian (eat), four months in India at her Guri’s Ashram (pray) and four months finding balance in Bali, Indonesia with a medicine man she once met (love).

I hope to eventually follow in her footsteps to both India and Indonesia. But for now, let’s take a look at all of the Eat Pray Love  filming locations in Rome and one in Naples, Italy!

Eat Pray Love  Filming Locations in Rome (and Naples)

Eat Pray Love  Filming Locations in Rome

1. castel sant’angelo, lungotevere castello, 50, 00193.

After leaving her life behind in New York, Elizabeth Gilbert’s stint in Rome begins at the top of Castel Sant’Angelo . She tells an old Italian joke (via narration) whilst looking out over the city of Rome as the sun starts to set.

Castel Sant’Angelo is one of the top things to do in Rome and I highly recommend visiting as near to sunset as possible for a beautiful, true Eat Pray Love,  experience.

2. Via dei Portoghesi, 18, 00186

Next, Gilbert heads to the apartment she is renting in Rome for the duration of her stay. An old Italian woman speaking broken English shows her around whilst pointing out things that are broken.

The exterior of that rundown apartment (I’m not 100% sure about interior, but later on Gilbert looks out to the street from her balcony so it might be used too) is 18 Via dei Portoghesi .

It’s situated incredibly near the Piazza Navona (which is next on this list of Eat Pray Love  filming locations). So, it’s not far away from the main tourist sites in Rome if you wanted to make a little pilgrimage to this apartment.

3. Ristorante Caffè Domiziano, Piazza Navona, 88, 00186

Right on the Piazza Navona is the café where Liz heads for a morning caffeine fix and finds herself competing for the barista’s attention with every suited businessman in Rome.  Here, she meets Swedish Sofi who saves her butt by ordering coffee for her. And thus, a friendship is born!

Thanks so much for Yany in the comments for alerting me to the name of this Café! You saved MY butt!!

4. Fiumi Fountain, Piazza Navona, 00186

After meeting Swedish Sofi in the crowded café ,  Elizabeth goes for a walk to Piazza Navona and admires the Fiumi Fountain . Also known as the ‘Fountain of the Four Rivers’, the statue was created by Bernini, one of Rome’s most famous sons.

The fountain also featured in a poignant Angels and Demons  (2009) scene so it’s an  Eat Pray Love  filming location you can’t miss!

5. Via dell’ Orso, 00186

After wandering around Piazza Navona , Gilbert attempts to use a water fountain on Via dell’ Orso which is super near her apartment filming location. After that, we can assume she calls it a night!

6. Sant’Agnese in Agone, Via di Santa Maria dell’Anima, 30/A, 00186

It’s a new day and Elizabeth Gilbert is sat on a bench in Piazza Navona outside the Sant’Agnese in Agone church eating gelato with a couple of Nuns. W hen in Rome and all that…

This shot is one of the most iconic  Eat Pray Love  filming locations because it was used on a lot of posters and DVD covers.

7. Colosseum, Piazza del Colosseo, 1, 00184

Elizabeth Gilbert doesn’t actually  visit  the Colosseum , but we are treated to a lovely drone/birdseye shot of one of the most impressive, ancient Roman structures ever. I mean, it was only the largest amphitheatre ever built and one of the seven wonders of the world. Not a big deal.

8. Antica Trattoria Della Pace, Via Della Pace, 1, 00186

But what’s more important to Elizabeth Gilbert in Rome than visiting old, important monuments? Eating all the Italian food! This is the ‘eat’ part of  Eat Pray Love , after all.

She has dinner with her new, young and hot Italian teacher and this is where she first hears her favourite Italian word ever: Attraversiamo . The Italian language lesson takes place at a typical Roman restaurant, Antica Trattoria Della Pace. It’s still open if you’d like to visit!

Fun fact:  In Italy, there are three different kinds of restaurants based on how formal they are, though the lines are somewhat blurred nowadays. An Osteria is the most casual dining establishment. It used to be a place to buy wine and diners would bring their own food.

But now, it’s most comparable to a country pub in the UK. A Trattoria is slightly more formal and family-friendly. What you might call a standard restaurant. And a Ristorante is a formal, fine-dining experience. Though as I said, the lines are blurred a bit more nowadays.

After a sneaky shot of St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City from Castel Sant’Angelo , and  after  Giovanni walks her to her apartment after their language lesson…

9. Osteria Dell’Antiquario, Piazzetta Di San Simeone, 26/27, 00186

Less talking, more eating! In the next scene, some classic Italian Opera plays over Liz Gilbert eating a simple tomato spaghetti with some water and red wine. I’m with you, Elizabeth.

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a simple, but well done, meal by yourself. Osteria Dell’Antiquario is also still open for business.

However, the ‘let’s watch her slurp her spaghetti several times’ montage is a bit unnecessary, though. No matter how delicately Julia Roberts eats her pasta. Just makes me hungry!

10. Santa Lucia Ristorante, Largo Febo, 12, 00186

Are we hungry again already?! After a trip to the barbers and a practical lesson in saying ‘screw you’ in Italian, Elizabeth and her new friends head to dinner.

The restaurant certainly looks nicer than the others we’ve seen. And if you read my guide above, it’s because Restaurant Saint Lucia is an actual  restaurant  and is a bit on the pricey side. Yup, this one is also still open!

Is this not a thing in Italy? It seems like restaurants are opening and closing for business all the time in the UK.

In this scene, Elizabeth Gilbert wows the waiter with her new Italian skills and orders for everybody.

11. Mausoleum of Augustus, Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 00186

Our final  Eat Pray Love  film location in Rome is at the Mausoleum of Augustus , which Gilbert narratives as she writes an email to David in New York.

If I were a betting girl… I’d say the exit to Castel Sant’Angelo   is used instead of the Mausoleum itself. The little bridge and the tunnels look exactly  the same as those in the castle. But a drone shot of the whole site features in the film regardless.

Elizabeth Gilbert then finishes her time in Rome by sharing an American Thanksgiving with some of her new Italian friends before jetting off to the hustle and bustle of India.

Eat Pray Love Filming Locations in Rome (and Naples) | almostginger.com

Eat Pray Love  Filming Locations in Naples

12. l’antica pizzeria da michele, via cesare sersale, 1, 80139, naples.

After location N.9, Liz and Swedish Sofi decide to head down to Naples for the day to eat some delicious Napoli pizza (honestly, my mouth is watering writing this. How can you delve into the Eat Pray Love  filming locations without yearning for pizza/pasta/wine/all of the above?!).

They end up at the “greatest pizza in Naples, therefore the greatest pizza in the world” which is apparently served at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele .

I have no idea if it’s true or not, I’m sure lots of locals will disagree. This is where Liz has a word with Sofi and tells her to not worry about the calories, that she’s in Italy having the time of her life, and to eat the bloody pizza. I’m paraphrasing slightly, but they’re wise words for us all.

Side note, all of these  Eat Pray Love  filming locations are so accurate and authentic, which fills me with so many warm fuzzies that I can actually visit these places and have the same experiences as the characters. 10 points to Gryffindor!

BONUS  Eat Pray Love  Locations

13. il gelato di san crispino, via della panetteria, 42, 00187.

This isn’t an  Eat Pray Love  filming location, but it is a lovely bonus location. In the  Eat Pray Love  book, Elizabeth Gilbert mentions sampling this gelateria near the Trevi Fountain. Again, Il Gelato di San Crispino is not the best gelateria in Rome.

However, it’s probably one of the best in a super touristy location! You can tell because they keep the gelato in silver tubs which is a clear cut sign of quality.

eat travel love movie

Hi, I just came back home from my first trip to Rome and I so loved it! As a funny fact, I watched this movie long time ago, but I didn’t remember the details. When I sat in the plane on my way home I started watching the movie again and I realized that the apartment she was staying in Rome was actual the hotelI stayed. I kept stopping the movie to look for the detail and it is definitely now Navona Grand Suite at Villa de Portoghesi 18. I loved the place! Then, I see that I visited a lot of places she visited too, like the Coliseum, Piazza Navona and more. Now I can relate to the movie and confirm every place. Thanks.

Thanks so much for your message, Liginette! Oh wow, I didn’t realise it was a hotel! What an amazing coincidence! 😀 I’m pleased you enjoyed your trip, Rome’s a beautiful city.

I have just come across your article while doing some itinerary planning – thank you for an easy to follow guide! I do come bearing some bad news though, apparently, Osteria Dell’Antiquario has permanently shut down.

Thanks so much for your comment, Sabrina! Ahhh no that’s a shame, so many of the restaurants in the film are now closed! Thanks so much for the update though 😀

Stayed at my dad’s cousins home on Via dell’ Orso for a glorious fortnight in the spring of 1989! It looks the same (don’t recall the water fountain). One of the most beautiful places I’ve been, and best times of my life. And Naples looks exactly the same …the hung laundry over the streets through the city is perfect!

Wow, that’s awesome! I think we’ve determined that the water fountain was probably placed there for the shoot because I believe it was supposed to be faulty and splashed back at her, which makes sense. I’ve never been to Naples but can’t wait to go 🙂

eat travel love movie

I got here looking for the fountain at Vía Dell’Orso, since I stayed there during a trip to Rome in december 2019, and I didn’t remember none. I’ve searched in Google Maps and I also can’t find. Do you know if it was just placed for the film, or maybe removed between the 2010 and 2014?

Hey Pablo, thanks for your comment! 🙂 This is just a guess, but doesn’t she squirt herself a little with the water from that fountain? If so, I think it’s likely that they put a fake fountain in rather than modify a real fountain. That’s just my guess as I didn’t go looking for the fountain myself, but I definitely will the next time I’m in Rome.

I have read the book, then i watch the movie and the same year (2010) i visited Rome first time! I have been in Rome 3 times and i will go again soon. I like your post very much! Thank you for sharing with us. I have visited too some of these places, i loved the film, most the part in Italy!! My best is “home” in Via dei Portoghesi. Greetings from Greece. Greek Map Girl travel bloger Evangelia

Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I loved the film too and loved visiting the filming locations. Safe travels! 🙂

I loved this post! I’m going to Rome next October and I’m staying in a hotel just next to Via Portoghesi so, God willing, I will also have that picture for my collection.

Congrats on the blog, it is really great!

Thank you so much for the super nice comment!! 🙂 October is a great time to go to Rome, you’re gonna have so much fun! Yes! Thankfully most of the locations are quite near each other so it won’t take you long to visit as many as you want 🙂

The Coffe place names is Caffe Domiziano” I saw it on the website with videos behind the scenes,

Thanks so much, Yany!! I really appreciate you helping me out! 🙂

Well researched post, Rebecca! I have been to the Castel Sant’Angelo and the Fiumi Fountain in Rome and that pizzeria in Naples. But both visits where before I started my film and travel blog (2006 and 2013 respectively). On my next visit to Rome, I definitely have to try the Osteria where Julia / Liz had her heavenly spaghetti! It looks so delicious indeed! 😉 Plus, I noticed that the Fiumi Fountain also appears in the Italian Netflix series “Baby”!

Oh thanks Sonja! Me too, it’s so helpful when filming locations are also tourist spots haha, but I’m jealous you’ve been to the pizzeria in Naples! Me too, the restaurants and the food in Eat Pray Love look divine!!

Top Romantic Travel Movies to watch with your loved one

True love stories never go out of style, especially when you add to them a travel spin. Love is a universal language, but there´s nothing more absorbing and intriguing than to follow a romance on the other side of the world. Any usual storyline becomes unique when you add new landscapes, cultures, and traditions to the plot. Let´s check my favorite romantic travel movies that will make you live adventures from home.

  • This post contains affiliate links from which I earn a commission (at no extra cost to you). For more info, please read  my disclosure . As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

As much as I love watching travel documentaries , sometimes we all want something heart-melting – a movie with a beautiful storyline to escape the ordinary without having to get off the couch.

If you think of it, traveling is quite a romantic experience itself: navigating a new place gives you unlimited possibilities to fall in love with cities, architecture, nature, food, museums, street art, and people. Most of my personal romantic travel experiences were connected to traveling.

Therefore, every time my next holiday feels too far away, I just pick a few romantic travel movies and secretly disappear from the rest of the world. Check this list of Charming International Romance Movies Around the World and Spanish TV Series to Binge-Watch .

The best romantic travel movies to watch with your loved one

Table of Contents

The best romantic travel movies

1. out of africa (1985).

Let´s start this list of the most romantic travel movies with a few iconic oldies. Out of Africa (1985) is based on the autobiographical novel and tells the story of the Danish author Karen Blixen, who moved to Africa to establish her new life there.

There´s something breathtaking about this movie – the wild African scenery, the romance between leading actors, the music on the background … Besides the engaging storyline in Out of Africa (1985), the photography director has definitely done a wonderful job bringing Africa´s wild natural beauty to the screen.

2. Roman Holiday (1953)

Roman Holiday (1953) is a timeless classic with Audrey Hepburn´s charming performance. It´s the story of a bored princess who escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome. It absolutely inspires to visit Rome, Italy or simply watch all of Audrey Hepburn´s iconic movies in a row .

3. The English Patient (1997)

The English Patient (1997) is one of my personal all-time favorites. This movie has it all – love, romance, tragedy, secret, drama, and journey.

A nurse from Canada is caring for a pilot, horribly burned in a plane wreck. He cannot remember his name, so he’s known simply as “the English Patient,” thanks to his accent. However, once the nurse begins to piece together her patient’s story, the spectators time-travel to Italy and Egypt (although the dessert scenes were actually filmed in Tunisia) where the love story took place.

You literally gravitate to the screen from the first minute of The English Patient (1997). It has won 9 Oscars for a reason.

4. Painted veil (2006)

Painted veil (2006) is another absolute favorite of mine. The movie is based on the classic novel by W. Somerset Maugham. The storyline takes us back to the 1920s. A middle-class doctor marries an upper-class woman, but she never really appreciates him and falls in love with someone else. Once the doctor discovers the infidelity, he accepts a job in a remote Chinese village (suffering deadly epidemic) as an act of vengeance.

But this journey together changes everything between the couple and makes the unfaithful wife see her husband in a different light. Life in a Chinese village brings meaning to their relationship and makes them fall in love with each other all over again. I adore this movie and never get tired of watching it.

5. Anna and the King (1999)

Anna and the King (1999) takes you to the magical kingdom of Siam . The widowed British schoolteacher, Anna Leonowens, travels to the other side of the world to educate the king´s heirs in the ways of the West. First, the strict Siamese protocol seems unfair to her. But once she and the king get to know each other and make an attempt to understand their cultural differences, their relationship evolves into a beautiful love story.

6. Tourist (2010)

If there´s one movie to inspire everyone to visit the Italian city of Venice – it´s Tourist (2010). The storyline might not be as deep or dramatic as in the other romantic travel movies from this list. But Tourist (2010) is one of the most visually pleasing movies ever – literally everything you see on the screen is beyond aesthetic: filming locations, leading actors, Angelina´s outfits, the splendid canals of Venice…

The plot seems simple at a first glimpse: an American tourist Frank meets a mysterious beauty who drags him into a dangerous world of espionage and adventure. But did their paths really cross by a pure accident and how will the romance between the two of them evolve?

7. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

One of Woody Allen´s must-see works is Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). The plot takes place in the picturesque city of Barcelona , where two American girls get their travel plans turned upside down by a bohemian artist Juan and his psychotic ex-wife. Besides the great performances of the main actors, what I loved about this movie is how it really shows the beauty of Barcelona and this unique love for life the Spanish people have.

8. The Holiday (2006)

Have you ever thought of having a spontaneous vacation somewhere far away by simply swapping homes with someone? The Holiday (2006) tells a story of two women tired of guy-problems who decide to swap homes. From California glamour to a reclusive British cottage , and all the way around, both of them unexpectedly meet a local guy and fall in love. It´s just a sweet movie to cozy yourself at home and enjoy the two different love stories in the States and UK.

9. A Good Year (2006)

A Good Year (2006) will take you to the c harming region of Luberon in the French Provence . Max Skinner is a highly successful investment expert who inherits the vineyard in France where he grew up as a child. Max travels to France with an intention to sell the vineyard as quickly as possible, but after spending some time in Provence, he discovers a part of himself that he had lost, as well as falls in love with a beautiful French woman.

10. Eat Pray Love (2010)

Almost every list of romantic travel movies and books starts with Eat Pray Love (2010). The movie is based on Elizabeth Gilbert´s post-divorce journey around the world.

In pursuit of worldly pleasure, she visits Italy, India, Indonesia and finds friends, spiritual devotion, and love. Many call this movie (or book) “too cutesy” or “superficial”. But I really enjoyed both. The path of spiritual growth and enlightenment is different for everyone, this movie is just a personal journey of Elizabeth Gilbert. It might inspire you or it might not. But you can definitely get some aesthetic pleasure from watching Eat Pray Love (2010). It´s all about life and food passion in Italy, devotion in India, and inner balance on the Indonesian island of Bali .

11. Lost in Translation (2003)

Directed by Sofia Coppola and set under the bustling city life and lights of Tokyo, Lost in Translation (2003) is one of the romantic travel classics. The two main characters from different generations build a surprising bond simply because both feel lonely and have anything to do while they are in Japan. The film is a slow and dreamy story full of funny cultural clashes. It also shows how big cities can bring together people while keeping them apart at the same time…

12. The Terminal (2004)

Every frequent traveler will find the story of being stuck in airports very much relatable. But Viktor Navorski, an Eastern European tourist, is caught up in international politics and forced to live at JFK in New York indefinitely. However, he becomes improbably adored by all the people who work there.

It´s mostly a funny story of how life goes on at any place – people can still make friends and fall in love even without full freedom of move. While living at the airport, Viktor falls for a flight attendant, so the whole feeling-good comedy gets a romantic twist.

13. A perfect plan (2012)

It´s one of the on-the-road favorites we often watch with my husband. It is warm, funny and literally takes you around the world from France and Belgium to Kenya and Russia . In Isabelle´s family first marriages never work out. So she decides to marry the first guy on her way, just to divorce him and go back to her long-time boyfriend Pierre to live happily ever after. But as always things just don´t go as planned…

14. Mama Mia (2008)

If you need an ultimate inspiration to fall in love with Greece , just check Mamma Mia. Despite being a popular tribute to the Greek islands , it was not filmed on the touristy Mykonos or Santorini . Instead, the cast and crew headed to the lesser-known Skopelos and Skiathos. The film is built around ABBA hit songs and tells the story of a daughter inviting 3 of her mother´s boyfriends to figure out who´s her real father.

You know that after my last visit to Crete , I´ve confessed that I´m ready to go back to explore new Greek islands every summer. So every time I feel like I need a dose of Greece, Mamma Mia helps to fuel this Wanderlust.

15. Midnight in Paris (2011)

No list of romantic travel movies can be complete without something set in Paris, the universal city of love . Woody Allen brings to us an intriguing story of an engaged American couple falling under the magic of the city of Paris. Only one midnight walk in the city changes everything for both of them.

Besides spotlighting many famous actors like Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates, and Carla Bruni, Midnight in Paris (2011) is full of beautiful cityscapes that will make you want to grab your partner’s hand and take him/her to Paris right away.

16. Letters to Juliet (2010)

Letters to Juliet (2010) is a romantic movie where the whole story takes place in the Italian city of Verona . Sophie travels to Italy with her husband, but one day she decides to explore the streets of Verona alone. Once she walks up to Juliet´s courtyard, she discovers hundreds of notes stuck in the wall, all from the lovers seeking advice. Sophie answers one of the letters and the story begins…

Verona is one of a few Italian cities still missing on my travel bucket list, so I personally enjoyed time-traveling to Shakespeare´s novel and seeing the beautiful cityscapes of Verona.

17. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) is your ultimate Wanderlust ticket to Toscana, Italy . The movie tells us a story of a San Francisco writer Frances Mayes who gets a trip to Tuscany as a gift from a friend. However, once she arrives in Italy she falls under the local charm of Tuscany and impulsively buys an aging, but very charming, villa. New friends, local experiences, and lots of unexpected surprises – Frances Mayes finds herself immersed in an adventure of a lifetime.

18. Beyond Borders (2003)

Beyond Borders (2003) is a story of the turbulent romance with the backdrop of the world’s most dangerous hot spots. This movie brings our attention to the global humanitarian challenges of aid workers and refugees crisis. Many critics claim that Beyond Borders (2003) is neither a beautiful melodrama (because it shows its viewers not the prettiest side of this world) nor a serious documentary (because you have the romance in the foreground).

Although, you can feel that many of the experiences are partially autobiographical for the leading actress Angelina Jolie (who´s also a UN ambassador for refugees). You can find lots of things in common with her “Notes from My Travels”, where the actress describes her visits with Refugees in Africa, Cambodia, Pakistan, and Ecuador. So, this movie makes you reflect on the world´s situation and our possible personal input.

19. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Based on the bestseller book, Crazy Rich Asians (2018) is the story of Rachel Chu who accompanies her longtime boyfriend to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore . Excitement about visiting Asia mixes in her heart with a fear of meeting Nick’s family, one of the country’s wealthiest dynasties. It is a funny and romantic story of how a family is actually crazier than love itself.

20. Cairo Time (2009)

Juliette, a fashion magazine editor in her 50s, travels to Cairo to meet her husband, a UN official working in Gaza. She arrives in Egypt for a three-week vacation, but her husband is constantly delayed with work. Therefore he sends one of his friends, who had been his security officer for many years, to escort Juliette throughout the beautiful and exotic city of Cairo. The last thing anyone expects is that they will fall in love.

Cairo Time (2009), aside from its beautiful romance story, is also a love letter to the city of Cairo from its writer/director Ruba Nadda, inspired by her personal experiences. Throughout history, Egypt has played host to the Greeks, Romans, Crusaders, the Ottomans, Napoleon, and the British, so there´s so much life and history beautifully captured on screen. A journey through Cairo feels like a journey through time…

"I'm having a relationship with my pizza." As Julia Roberts looks over her Neapolitan pizza at her Eat Pray Love co-star, Tuva Novotny, I too feel a pang for the thin, cheesy, luscious display that nearly outshines the Oscar winner. As it turns out, this particular scene was filmed at the famous L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele in the heart of Naples, which has been baking some of the city's best pies since 1870, and where Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the best-selling book Eat Pray Love, actually ate during her four-month stint in Italy.

The new movie is an unabashed chick flick—my boyfriend was one of four men in an audience of about 100 people. But however girly the plot, the bounty of delicious Italian, Indian and Balinese foods can be enjoyed by all. Here's a quick list of the film's food highlights to get your mouth watering.

Pizza Napolitana: Forget New York. Forget Chicago. As mentioned, this pizza has become the object of my desire—days after seeing the movie, I still can't get it out of my mind. As one might expect, the Pizzeria Da Michele does not divulge their recipe online, but here's a pizza dough recipe you can use to try to approximate the real deal.

Egg, Asparagus, Potato and Ham Salad: One day in Rome, Roberts' character, Liz, decides to stay home and do nothing—except eat, that is. She drizzles olive oil over a portion of asparagus, hard boiled eggs, and prosciutto, and pours herself a glass of Italian red wine for a job well done.

Figs and Ham: As she winds through the streets of Rome, Liz passes a woman delicately cutting into a platter of fresh figs and Parma ham. This was a pleasant departure from the also delicious but more ubiquitous dish, "prosciutto e melone," or ham and melon.

Spaghetti all'Amatriciana: Nowhere is the power of simple recipes and fresh ingredients more apparent than when Liz gorges herself on a heaping plate of this spaghetti and tomato sauce dish. Spaghetti all'Amatriciana—which, at its most basic, includes onions, tomatoes, pancetta, olive oil, and chili peppers—is native to the town of Amatrice, located to the east of Rome near the border dividing the regions of Abruzzo and Umbria. Although older, more traditional recipes included lard and bacon fat, olive oil has proved a healthier substitute and is now widely used in Italian trattorias throughout the country.

Fried Artichokes: I tend to subscribe to the notion that frying vegetables defeats the purpose of eating them in the first place. But when a plate of crispy, golden, leafy artichokes was served up in the film, I had to reconsider. I've always eaten artichokes steamed, with a touch of mayo and lemon. But next time I might have to plunge those artichokes straight into the frying oil.

Thums Up!: While the Eat portion of Eat Pray Love takes place mostly in Rome, a few other interesting foods (and beverages, in this case) pop up throughout the rest of the film. During her stay at an ashram in India, Liz's friend Richard takes her to a small cafe to enjoy a sweet, Indian cola called Thums Up! that serves as the Coca-Cola substitute in India. A hand making a thumbs up sign appears on the bottle.

Exotic Balinese Fruits: As Roberts' character cruises the Balinese open-air markets with her new Brazilian squeeze, played by Javier Bardem, they scope out a couple of the native fruits of Bali, including the spiked Durian, a fruit prohibited in many hotels because of its offensive odor. "That one tastes like stinky feet," Bardem says. Contrary to what his character would have us believe, though, I've heard that if you can get past the smell, the taste of the fruit's creamy filling is pretty darn good.

Already been to see the film? What was your favorite Eat Pray Love food moment?

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. WHEN: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily WHERE: 34 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach. beachbagels.yolasite.com ______________

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 599 Forest Ave., Portland. misterbagelforestave.com ______________

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily WHERE: 428 Forest Ave., Portland. rosefoods.me

______________

ROVER BAGEL

At Rover Bagel, you’ll find wood-fired plain, poppy, sea salt, sesame and everything bagels available most of the time, and the spread game here is strong with cream cheese options like lemon-thyme-honey cream and chili-garlic.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 10 West Point Lane Suite 10-204, Biddeford (Pepperell Mill). roverbagel.com

______________ Advertisement

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 416 Preble St., South Portland. scratchbakingco.com ___________

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: 117 Route 1, Scarborough. themainebagel.com Advertisement

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily WHERE: 15 Temple St., Portland. workscafe.com
