I had wanted to go on a Duck Tour years ago, but was so busy with school that I just never found the time...until now. We were visiting Boston and thought of some fun things to do, and taking a Tour Tour was on the list, and as luck would have it, one of the starting points was just across the road from our hotel. There was no real difference between buying our tickets from the kiosk right where the the 1hr 20 minute tours departed, and getting them online, so, since we were so close by, we simply crossed the road and purchased them for the following day. So easy. In short, this was a really fun and quick tour around Boston that gave us a good history lesson about the city, and showing us some of the main sites on land on water.....as the tours are all taking place while riding on one of their several amphibious tour buses. Our bus driver kept quiet most of the journey as, I guess, he was supposed to stay focused on the busy (crazy) downtown roads and while on the Charles River....safety first! Our tour guide was a very knowledgable, fun, and colorful character by the name of Frim Jolly who made our tour ever so entertaining and edicational at the same time. Our whole family was so glad we decided to take the Duck Tour...even on this cloudy and slightly wet day. We had lots of fun, thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience, and this was perhaps one of the best highlights of our short visit to Boston. A must go if ever visiting Boston, especially for first-timers.

If you're in Boston, you don't want to miss out on doing a Boston duck tour! I had no idea this was even a thing until I saw it in person. We were walking past the science museum (apparently one of the boarding stops) and kept seeing people get on what looked like a bus that was a boat. Needless to say, I was intrigued and Googled the day away. As a result, I was dying to get on the duck tour. We tried one of the days, but they were sold out. Fortunately we were able to book online for our last day there and what a blast it was. Mike was our driver and Ernie was our narrator. The time on tour, in the city and on the water alike, flew by. I learned so much about Boston, and more so, I really enjoyed how family friendly they are, even though I admittedly do not have kids. They let both kids and adults alike take photos driving the duck. It's kitschy but so cute. Worth doing certainly!

Yes, yes, yes! I do recommend this business! Boston Duck Tours has been around for a looonnnnnng time and they have mastered the city tour! We had Mr. Ben Everywhere for our guide and he was terrific. He was so funny and engaging and his tour was perfectly choreographed with our driver's stops and drive-bys. Thank you Ben. Your tour was the highlight of our trip to Boston. Boston is very dense and has horrible roads and once we saw the historical landmarks we were ready to get the heck out of there. I recommend walking the freedom trail and taking the duck tour and being done in one day. Boston is a Tough City for tourists.

Captain Ben was fantastic.

When in Boston, why not check this out... I really enjoyed visiting Boston and taking a part of this tour. It's both land and water and you got to enjoy both. I really recommend this if you have the time to try it out while you're visiting the city.

A great way to get the lay of the land in Boston by land and water! The tour was informative, covered a ton of ground, and was a lot of fun. It was the best kind of cheesy and was the perfect way to start a long weekend in the city. If you're on the fence, just do it! You won't regret the purchase. All of the tour guides seemed fantastic, each with a different persona. Duck Tracy was our guide and he did a great job.

What a great way to get to know the city of Boston. Which is a city with so much history, so I honestly would recommend this if you are in Boston! They have multiple starting locations, but they all include both a land and water portion, and if you can get the latest ride (which is what we did) during winter, you might be able to get a sunset on water. Not to mention they let people get the chance to drive the boat, starting with kids first! Our tour guide was a marathon runner, native to Boston so we got plenty of stories along with the normal tour guide info. So much fun!

This tour was on my to do list and each time I visited Boston, I wasn't able to schedule. Finally, I did, it is an absolute must do. The tour guide was a lot of fun, he gave us the rich history of a few important places in Boston, we drove around the city and the truck turns into a boat as we went inside a river, this truck was used in WW II. One of the most fun part was that while on the boat, we are invited to Drive the boat!!! That was absolutely fun. My mother loved it too.

The duck tour is such an iconic tourist activity, even as someone who lives in Boston. It's a fun family activity and great to take visitors to see the city. The tour guides are funny and so knowledgeable, and really interact with everyone on the tour. It was great for kids, who get to take turns steering the boat in the Charles River. Really great views of the city in the water too. The only thing keeping this from five stars is the cost. It's a little high (expected when geared to tourists) but still fun!

Entertaining tour which provided a lot of Boston history and trivia. The family enjoyed sightseeing on the road as well as the novelty of going into the river. Would recommend at least once for every Boston visitor.

I was in Boston for work and we had a duck tour as a team event. I'm glad we did as our guide was really friendly and had a ton of cool knowledge. It is always cool going from land to water in the same vehicle. I'll definitely do it again when I'm in town.

'Best Job In Town': Boston Duck Boats Ready For New Season

March 20, 2019 / 6:51 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- A sure sign of spring, the Boston duck boats are getting ready for the new season. Thursday is opening day, so Wednesday was the shakedown, and a chance to train new narrators and drivers.

"We're on a duck named Waterfront Wanda," says Bill St. George, as he takes a test run as a new narrator for Boston Duck Tours . He's learning the duck boat ropes not only informing, but also entertaining riders. "It's the best job in town. How can you beat it," he says.

Bill St. George

At the same time, Victor Antolini is getting his chops back as a driver. "You get to see people from all over the world coming into visit Boston to see the beautiful sights," he says.

It's all about being ready to start the season when Boston Duck Tours takes to the streets again. "We're getting the operators ready to drive the vehicles through the street, and we're getting the narrators ready to greet the guests and the tourists and tell them the history of the city," says Johnny Kinsman from the Duck Tours. He's watching the trainees and providing feedback.

Duck Boat

Kinsman says Bill nailed it. "He's got a great cadence and a great delivery and a lot of knowledge to back it up," Kinsman says. "Just being with people and showing people the great city we all love, full of history, full of charm, full of character," is the best part for Bill.

"I hope the passengers come away with a great experience of Boston," adds Victor.

"Once the river starts thawing and the weather gets better, we become a harbinger of spring in the town," says Kinsman.

Boston Duck Tours has had some safety problems in the past. Three years ago a young woman was killed in an accident with one of the vehicles. Since then they have added an array of cameras to the duck boats as well as electronic sensors. They've also doubled the staff aboard each vehicle. The driver no longer acts as the narrator. Now it's two people, one drives, the other talks.

How much of a splash is there with the Duck Boat tour? Does one get very wet when the boat goes in the water? The tour looks fun but I'd rather not get soaked!

Also, do they provide life jackets?

5 replies to this topic

' class=

Christine - it’s been a while since I was on the Duck Tour but my recollection is that you stay totally dry. The seats are up high in the amphibious vehicle and I don’t recall much of a “splash”going in. I think there are life jackets in the ceiling - don’t recall that we put them on as we went into the water. They are safe - and fun!

boston duck tours narrators

Likewise, I did not get splashed when I took the Duck Boat Tour.

It is stable and slowly enters the water. It is not like Disney’s Splash Mountsin. If it is raining hard you could get wet but that has nothing to do with going into the river.

Life jackets are available in case of emergency but not issued

Thank you everyone! Good to know that you don't get wet and that it's a smooth ride into the water. That sounds more like my cup of tea. We will book it. Thanks again!
