"Danzig" was released in August 1988 via producer Rick Rubin 's then-new label Def American Recordings . It remains the band's best-selling album, having been certified platinum in the U.S. for sales in excess of a million copies.

When DANZIG , the band, grew out of the MISFITS / SAMHAIN lineage in 1987, leader Glenn Danzig went into the new project with even grander ambitions and a long-term design. Between 1977 and 1987, the MISFITS ' horror-punk morphed into the darker, occult-steeped SAMHAIN . When producer and record mogul Rick Rubin showed interest in signing SAMHAIN to his Def Jam label and producing their first record, the band yet again evolved, and DANZIG was born.

1988's "Danzig" debut stripped away the creepy dissonance of SAMHAIN and replaced it with a focused sensibility. It rocked hard and aimed for the gut; it was primal and memorable, a straightforward howl of sinister rock and roll played by a band of four who locked tight in their vision and looked unified in their presentation.

Misfits has confirmed details of three new shows in the US to take place across the summer.

The punk legends will perform their first show of the year in Tampa, Florida, on June 24. They will then play two further dates in July, journeying to Newark, New Jersey, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Fear will open for the band across all dates, while Megadeth will join them in support in Tampa. The Gaslight Anthem will also perform in Newark, while AFI will complete the bill in Phoenix.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will be able to gain early access to tickets during an exclusive pre-sale. It will open at 10am ET on March 22 and run through 10pm ET on March 23. Tickets will then go on general sale at 10am local time on March 24 and will be available to purchase here .

The new shows follow Misfits ringing in the new year with a special New Year’s Eve concert in Las Vegas . That gig was the latest in a number of recent appearances – in October, the band celebrated Halloween in Dallas with special guests Alice Cooper and The Distillers, while it also headlined Chicago’s Riot Fest in September.

However, since singer Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only settled their decades-old feud to reunite the band’s classic members in 2016, the Original Misfits have only played a total of 14 shows in six years.

Danzig has suggested that the band will not embark on a more traditional tour, only playing gigs here and there. “I don’t think I’m going to tour anymore,” he told Revolver last year. “I’m just going to fly out to a show here or there. I’ll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don’t see myself getting on a tour bus anymore…I think I’m done.”

Misfits’ Reunion With Glenn Danzig Stuns With 25 Hits From Hell

By Kory Grow

“You like our fucking pumpkins?” Glenn Danzig asks a deafening Denver crowd, gesturing at the 15-foot jack-o’-lanterns glowering at the audience on either side of Riot Fest’s “Riot Stage.” “They’re pretty fucking cool.”

The band is midway into the first Misfits concert in 33 years to feature its founding fiend behind the mic, and the horror-punk trailblazers have just finished playing their gruesome “Halloween,” with its catalog of “candy apples with razor blades” and “dead cats hanging from poles” – and the 10s of thousands of people watching seem to sing every word. Two coffin-shaped entryways sit at either side of the drum riser, the band’s iconic “Crimson Ghost” skull-man icon seems to adorn every other square foot of stage, and the other “original Misfits” – bassist Jerry Only and guitarist Doyle – are decked out in their Walpurgisnacht best: ghoulish white face paint, black leather and spikes, “devilock” hairdos swaying over their instruments. But for all of Misfits’ signature doom and gloom, everyone onstage looks surprisingly happy.

That’s because the original Misfits’ comeback, the closing event of the Mile High City’s three-day Riot Fest & Rodeo, was a celebration of the group’s nearly 40-year legacy of out-and-out punk subversion, one that’s resounded in the music of Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, AFI and countless other groups. It’s a reunion that never seemed possible, as Danzig and Only have spent the decades since their breakup filing soul-sucking lawsuits against one another and taking bitter snipes at each other in the press after Only and Doyle reactivated the group without Danzig in 1995 (Doyle and Danzig settled their differences around 2004). Yet here they all are, with help from former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and second guitarist Acey Slade, who plays in Joan Jett’s Blackhearts, reciting 25 of their so-called “hits from hell” for a little more than 70 minutes and even reminiscing.

Misfits Rolling Stone Riot Fest Perform

“About 40 years ago, Jerry and I got onstage in New York and we shocked the whole fucking punk scene who didn’t know what the fuck to make of us,” Danzig said at one point. “We didn’t look like anybody. We didn’t sound like anybody. We were angry, pissed-off and we dressed all in fucking black and we were always getting into fights and shitloads of fucking trouble every night. That’s pretty much what punk was back then, getting fucked up and fucking people up. At least in New York City it was.” Then they led a round of their ragged sing-along “Where Eagles Dare” as the audience bellowed its chorus, “I ain’t no goddamn son of a bitch.”

Right from the start, after a curtain fell to reveal the band’s elaborate stage set, the audience began crushing forward. Toward the front of the stage, fans pushed each other like some living organism, with the few that had free hands raising them to fist-bang along with Danzig’s anthemic lyrics. Some had arrived early, before the fest’s gates opened at 11 a.m., wearing their Crimson Ghost T-shirts as they watched bands like Bad Religion and Converge, the latter of which praised Misfits when singer Jacob Bannon said they “made all the difference for me when I was a kid.” By 2 p.m., the only Misfits shirts available at the merch table were sizes medium and small. The iconic punk band’s set was clearly the most anticipated performance of the weekend.

Only told Rolling Stone earlier this year that he wanted Danzig to pick the set list, and the singer’s song selection did not disappoint. It spanned his entire time with the group from 1977 to 1983, from their mordant first single “She” to the skull-rattling ragers of swan song Earth A.D. They charged through all the songs that became classics thanks to Metallica (“Last Caress,” “Green Hell,” “Die, Die My Darling”), with Danzig telling the crowd, “You all know this number,” and they included songs that have become de facto anthems for the band, including “Horror Business,” “We Are 138” and “Skulls.” And they played a handful of tunes Danzig has not sung onstage since 1983, like “Hybrid Moments,” “Teenagers From Mars,” “Where Eagles Dare” and his Misfits-era solo debut “Who Killed Marilyn?”

15 Great Misfits Covers

The only staples ostensibly missing were “Attitude,” which Guns N’ Roses has been playing on their current tour, and their balmy “Static Age.” But with seemingly everyone in the audience singing along, it was about as feel-good, lovey-dovey an experience as the band is capable of.

Misfits Riot Fest

Earlier this year, Danzig told Rolling Stone about what a debacle his final Misfits show was. “Our drummer got really drunk and couldn’t play so we got Todd [Swalla] from the Necros to fill in,” he said, laughing. “It was a crazy night. It almost turned into a disaster.” Video of that show, which took place in Detroit a couple of days before Halloween 1983 shows the band blasting through its repertoire with false starts. “We were playing at the speed of light,” Only said of the concert.

Tonight more than made up for that last gig. Lombardo added some rapid-fire double-bass to the thrashier songs, Only and Doyle playfully sneered when they weren’t smiling, and Danzig headbanged and flexed like he’d never left. They were in top form, as the Riot Fest crowd in Chicago – the original Misfits’ only other reunion date on the calendar – will see in a couple weeks, and that is a fact not lost on Danzig who introduced the group’s encore set by saying, “We hope you had a fucking historic evening tonight.” But the fact of the matter is, anybody who was present won’t soon forget the energy Misfits had or their howling jack-o’-lanterns.

Horror punk legends the Misfits have just announced three 2023 shows, featuring different special guests at each stop with Megadeth and AFI being among those tabbed to open.

Misfits are an American horror punk and heavy metal band who formed in 1997, and after a decade of hiatus from 1983 – 1995, have now reformed with a slightly revitalised line up of musicians.

The band now consists of Jerry Only on bass guitar and vocals, Dez Cadena playing guitar, and Eric Arce on the drums. Only is the sole remaining band member from the original line up, but the fresh and original playing techniques of the two newer members bring organic and exciting new elements to the trio’s sound. With eight studio albums under their belt, and four movie appearances, Misfits managed to travel into mainstream culture and popular media throughout their careers.

Although the band’s history of legal battles slightly dampens their career after Glenn Danzig filed a law suit against Only, their tours and musical talents are renowned for being exciting and original, and it hasn’t prevented the remainder of the band from continuing to perform. The band are known for their eccentric rock style make up that they sport on stage, and their enthusiastic high energy performances. As well as this, all of their performances use images inspired by horror or science fiction films, adding exciting elements of theatricality to the shows that they put on. Largely considered to be icons of their genre, the band have an eclectic following, from original fans from their early days, right up to young metalcore enthusiasts.

Live reviews

Original horror-punk pioneers The Misfits were THE epitome of the genre when they broke onto the scene back in 1977 when the Ramones were alive and kicking and punk was still an increasingly popular subculture. Misfits have been putting out dark, B-movie inspired records since the release their early-Eighties albums 'Walk Among Us' (1982) and 'Earth A.D./ Wolfsbood' (1983)- both considered cornerstones of the American post-hardcore movement. Founded by the growlingly powerfully-voiced singer/ songwriter Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only, the band has undergone some serious line-up changes in their time, with a rift between the two causing Danzig to quit in 1983 to go on to form other projects. After a long hiatus, Only has brought their unique brand of horror-punk-fun into the new decade, with a string of stadium and fetsival tour dates over the past few years.

As hardcore Misfits fans will know, that their live shows are always a theatrical, spikes 'n leather-laden frightfest, and an exhilaratingly unique experience. Despite having been going close to 40 years, and the possibility that their faces may now be a scarier sight before the skull make-up is applied, they continue to tour frequently- and their original, angst-ridden blend of dramatic murder tale lyrics and frantic guitar riffs, complemented by thunderous drumming, sounds very nearly just the same as when they played their songs the first time around. At any rate, Jerry Only's Misfits in 2014 put on a ghoulishly entertaining show.

New Jersey outfit Misfits can boast to being the pioneers of a genre when they emerged in the early 80s with the self described sound of horror punk. Heavily inspired by horror film themes and imagery, the band successfully worked these nuances into a stage show which quickly gained huge following in their homeland as well as across the pond in the UK. There were few bands creating a sound as extreme as Misfits yet still incorporating a real sense of showmanship.

This consistency is still evident today as Jerry Only and co step out onstage through the ominous spinning lights that are likened to prison towers or helicopters. The tone is very much set for opener 'The Devil's Rain' which threatens to lift the roof off the intimate venue with screeching riffs and deep bass notes that rumble through the room. The crowd naturally erupts in excitement and cheers as the group run through a setlist consisting of all eight studio albums. The horror influence is really evident on a finale of 'Skulls' and 'Die, Die My Darling' as the whole audience lifts their hands in unison and salutes the punk warriors.

Sadly Sound kick mislead on this concert. I was sceptical from the start bases on price and venue but was at least expecting a cover band. None of the band's listed for this were actually present. They were all a bunch of local rappers using the names of large bands. Everyone in my party was highly disappointed but found it comical at the same time.

This is the second time that Song kick has provided misleading information for concerts in my area. At least the first one they had the band's right just couldn't provide an accurate start time. I don't know if I will continue to use this app, if I do I will be doing my own research a little closer to verify all information is provided.

Misfits were awesome hammering out song after song in lightning like rythem played many early songs some from the graves era as well played some devils rain Miss graves and wish he was singing because only doesn't really sing well as a vocalist but he's very crowd friendly fez and Eric arcy walked out through the barricade to greet fans before the show in route to the stage while after the show Jerry only signed and took photos forever a really cool guy and that goes a long way in my book overall 4 of 5 stars

Awesome show!! First time at the Bronson Centre and it's a great venue. The Misfits are legends, and they certainly delivered: close to 2 hours of uninterrupted horror punk mayhem.

They kicked off the night by playing Static Age in full, before jumping into some classics. Then they delivered some Michael Graves era stuff, before ending with tracks off their newest Album.

The show ended with Halloween, which was a fitting end given that Halloween is coming up.

The Misfits show at the forum was incomparable to anything in this world. Their performance was dead on. The set list covered a wide variety with early songs such as She, and Bullet, as well many tunes from Walk Among Us, and Earth AD. Glenn and company seemed to get along well, and the show kept getting better as it progressed. I have listened to The Misfits for over 30 years, and am glad to have had this opportunity.

We all came to listen to great music, and that's exactly what we got. Overall, it was an incredible performance with incredible people and it was definitely not a night to forget.

My friends and I also really appreciated that the members of the band took the time after the concert to give signatures and even meet/talk to every fan who wanted to meet them. We would definitely see them again.

TERRIBLE SOUND QUALITY AT VENUE. parking cost as much as my ticket. Band was pretty good but couldn’t hear it he lyrics at all. Part of it is Glenn’s age, bigger part is the sound system at prudential center. I would never go back to this venue after this experience.

roblong95’s profile image

Sorry but it just wasnt up to scratch. The vocals were a bit all over the place especially early on. Jerry Jr on guitar was totally going through the motions and the drums kept drowning it all out. Having said that everyone else seemed to be having a good tome. 2/5.

scottyscott1970’s profile image

I can't see them and have not listened to any post Danzig music since Danzig left. Just not the same. The Misfits had an original sound back in the 70's and 80's that truly shocked people. Totally loved that. Misfits now are just another metal band with a gimmick.

Original MISFITS announce summer headline show in Austin

Misfits Sonic Temple 2024 YouTube Still, YouTube @tattooedberserker

Get ready for another ghoul's night out. Following the Misfits ' recent festival appearance at Sonic Temple , the legendary horror-punk outfit have announced a summer headlining gig in Austin, Texas.

The next appearance of the Original Misfits — of course steered by founding members Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only, and featuring longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein — will take place at Austin's Moody Center on August 10th. The arena show will find the band supported by punk, rockabilly and hardcore mainstays Suicidal Tendencies, Reverend Horton Heat and Agnostic Front.

Somewhat ominously, the post also notes: "Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness history and see the legendary ORIGINAL MISFITS perform LIVE — while you still can…"

Fiend Club fans will get access to the tickets first, with pre-sales going live tomorrow (May 29th). General ticket sales start up the following day.

As previously reported, Danzig and Co. will likewise be heading out to California to play the first-ever edition of Pomona punkfest No Values, which will also feature sets from Dillinger Escape Plan, Turnstile, Iggy Pop, the Jesus Lizard and many more. You can find out more about that fest over here .

Glenn Danzig says his current tour may be his last: “I think I’m done”

The musician isn't opposed to Misfits reunion tours, however

Glenn Danzig

Glenn Danzig – founding member of Danzig and Misfits – has said his current tour could likely be his last, though one-off appearances aren’t off the table.

Currently on a ten-day US tour with his eponymous band, Danzig gave an interview with Revolver , saying he doesn’t see himself undertaking further runs such as this. “[It’s] not really much of a tour,” Danzig said of his current stint. “It’s ten shows. I don’t think I’m going to tour anymore.

“I’ll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don’t see myself getting on a tour bus anymore… I think I’m done.”

Danzig – having previously said that the “original” Misfits line-up weren’t “gonna do many more” shows – added elsewhere in the interview that he wouldn’t be opposed to more Misfits reunion gigs.

The line-up, comprising Danzig, Jerry Only and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, are due to appear at Chicago’s Riot Fest 2022 this September, where they will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their debut album ‘Walk Among Us’ by performing it in full. “We’ll see if there’s any stuff [after that],” Danzig said of continued Misfits activity. “There’s been talk.

“I have the whole fall [autumn] off, unless I’m doing a movie or something — and I don’t really like doing a movie during the winter. It’s too cold. So, we’ll see. There might be some Misfits shows.”

As for new material, Danzig added he doesn’t see there being any new albums in the future. “Lately I seem to be writing more soundtrack stuff,” he said, “I don’t know that I’m ever going to do another album again… it could be that right now I’m just not interested and then a month from now I’ll be in the studio. It depends.

Recommended

“I’ve got to be excited about working in order to go do it. And right now I’m not that excited.”

Just over a year ago, the artist also had some strong opinions on the shape of the modern punk movement , saying a “punk explosion” is unlikely to happen largely in part to “cancel culture and woke bullshit”.

In an interview with Rolling Stone about his film Death Rider in the House of Vampires , the conversation turned towards music. Danzig had been discussing Misfits’ “fuck you, fuck the world” attitude in their song ‘Last Caress’, recalling how the band “would do things just to piss people off”.

He noted how he believes songs in that vein are no longer possible, saying: “There won’t be any new bands coming out like that. Now, they will immediately get cancelled.

“We’re lucky it happened when it did, because it’ll never happen again. You won’t have any of those kinds of bands ever again. Everyone’s so uptight and P.C., it’s just like, ‘OK, whatever.'”

Ever since legendary Horror Punk band Misfits reunited with the vocalist Glenn Danzig in 2016, they have been playing a few concerts every year. They announced the first dates scheduled for 2023 that will happen in Florida, New Jersey and Arizona next June and July.

At those shows they will have as special guests Megadeth, Fear, AFI and The Gaslight Anthem.

The band’s current line-up has Glenn Danzig (Vocals), Jerry Only (Bass), Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankestein (Guitar), Acey Slade (Guitar) and Dave Lombardo (Drums).

Misfits 2023 tour dates

  • 24 – Tampa, FL – MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre (With Megadeth and Fear as special guests)
  • 8 – Newark, NJ – Prudential Center (With The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as special guests)
  • 15 – Phoenix, AZ – Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre (With AFI and Fear as special guests)

Even though the band usually play less than 10 concerts every year, more dates might be announced since they are usually more active close to Halloween time.

“The tour will give fans the rare opportunity to see the horror punk pioneers in their fiendish glory, live on stage as well as mark the first time the reunited Original Misfits have visited the states of Florida and Arizona, featuring the classic line-up of Original singer/songwriter Glenn Danzig and Original bassist Jerry Only with longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein,” The official statement of the band said about the shows.

Possible Misfits setlist

Since the band had not released new material with Glenn Danzig since the 80s, the setlist might be quite similar to the one the band performed during the last years. An example is the one from Aftershock Festival back in 2021.

Five non-headliners not to be missed at No Values

Miss the days when Goldenvoice was a scrappy punk promoter booking shows with the funds from founder Gary Tovar’s weed dealing? No Values hits right in your safety-pinned sweet spot.

This weekend’s classic punk fest at the Pomona Fairplex is the latest smaller, genre-themed outing from the Coachella promoter. It harkens back to its very early incarnation with acts like the Misfits and Social Distortion atop the bill, and the day is packed with ageless legends (Iggy Pop) and SoCal fixtures (Bad Religion, a Coachella-reunited Sublime, the Vandals), along with a swath of modern inheritors (Turnstile, Ceremony).

Here are five of the best acts worth seeing as you sweat through your long-retired battle jacket.

The metal world lost one of its most exciting frontmen when Power Trip’s Riley Gale died in 2020. Power Trip, beloved for its mix of Texas thrash and hardcore pummel, was well on its way to becoming a festival-caliber headliner. After Gale’s death, the band earned a Grammy nomination for metal performance but was uncertain how they’d continue. Now fans have their answer, at least for now. This year, the surviving quartet will perform a run of shows with a longtime friend of the band, Seth Gilmore, on vocals. No Values will be the first chance SoCal fans have to see them since Gale’s death, and given how their legend has only grown in the interim, it will hopefully be the start of a new era for one of heavy music’s best bands.

Nick Stewart, Blake Ibanez, Chris Ulsh and Chris Whetzel of the band Power Trip.

The NPR Tiny Desk studio doesn’t leave much room for a circle pit, but the Philly group Soul Glo did its best as the first hardcore band to take a crack at the format back in March. Soul Glo is part of a small wave of young Black hardcore acts (including L.A.’s Zulu) who are upending the genre and calling out its blind spots while delivering some of the most exciting, boundary-pushing music the scene has yielded in a generation.

An L.A. hardcore band champions Black power and transcendence, in a scene not known for either

L.A.’s Zulu is one of the fiercest live bands around, but its members aspire to generate more than just a roiling mosh pit: ‘The point is to build a community.’

Any fan of punk and adjacent genres has seen tragedy strike a favorite act. But few in the classic ska world were prepared for Hepcat’s singer Greg Lee to die of a brain aneurysm and cardiac arrest at the terribly young age of 53 on March 19. Lee, who co-founded the band in the late ’80s, released six albums with Hepcat that informed the SoCal ska wave of ’90s acts like No Doubt and Sublime. The band were standouts for their velvet-smooth harmonies and jubilant choreography. They were booked for No Values before Lee’s death, and this short set will be a bittersweet tribute to one of the scene’s most universally beloved singers.

The Jesus Lizard

The late, great Steve Albini was best known for producing Nirvana’s “In Utero,” but might be best embodied on his work with the Jesus Lizard. David Yow’s scabrous post-hardcore band took Albini’s legacy of honest, blistering noise and made some of the best rock records of the ’90s like “Liar” and “Goat.” They’ve toured intermittently in the decades since, but now 26 years after their last LP, they’ve finally returned with a new album, “Rack,” that’s every bit as squalling and churning as the rest of their catalog.

Known as a giant of punk and experimental rock music from the 1980s to the present day, Albini produced and engineered records for Nirvana, the Pixies, PJ Harvey and others.

Quick, name the first punk band. The Sex Pistols? The Ramones? Wrong! The Stooges? MC5? Allowed, but debatable. The real, undisputed answer is The Damned, the UK combo whose 1976 single “New Rose” is generally regarded as the first true punk record, beating “Anarchy in the U.K.” to the punch by five weeks. It still sounds incredible today, with a ferocious musicianship and songcraft and a visual aesthetic that would inspire goths for decades. Even more incredibly, the band (vocalist Dave Vanian on vocals, guitarist Paul Gray, bassist Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies) is back on the road after first reuniting in 2022 for their first classic-lineup tour of the U.S. in 35 years.
