Without a doubt africa has some of the world’s most exciting and interesting riding vacation opportunities in the world. an african horseback riding safari through the world’s best wild game country is an experience to be remembered for a lifetime..

Bayard Fox, founder of Equitours and his wife, Mel, began guiding horseback riding safaris in Kenya’s Masai Mara during the winter when their Wyoming ranch was closed. Mel was raised on a farm on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, speaks Swahili and is well acquainted with the flora and fauna. Between them and their son, Richard, they have taken dozens of rides in Kenya , Botswana , Tanzania , South Africa and Namibia scouting for the best adventures and they have found many exciting options. Bayard is the ride consultant for Africa and is always pleased to discuss in detail the pros and cons of the many possibilities to best fit your riding skills, available time and personal interests.

Without a doubt Africa has some of the world’s most exciting and interesting riding vacation opportunities in the world. An African horseback riding safari through the world’s best wild game country is an experience to be remembered for a lifetime. Many parts of Africa are still wide open for riding and one can spend a week in the saddle without crossing a fence line or a paved road. Interacting on horseback with wild game like giraffe, zebra, Cape buffalo and many kinds of antelope is fascinating. There are plenty of opportunities for thundering gallops and some fine saddle horses. Contact with colorful local tribesmen like the Masai in Kenya and Tanzania is an added treat. Visiting game country while horseback riding in Africa is much more in harmony with nature than doing it by vehicle. It is a great deal more interesting than just sitting all day cramped in a land rover confined to roads.

The horse safari in the Masai Mara remains one of our most popular rides in the world. There is no better place to see huge numbers of African game where unimpeded migrations over wide areas are still possible. It is a challenging ride as one can gallop wide open plains alongside zebra, wildebeest and giraffe on athletic polo ponies. Another popular ride is the Tuli in Botswana where the game viewing from horseback is also excellent, but the equestrian skills required are somewhat less demanding. Africa is a huge continent (bigger than the US and Canada combined) with greatly contrasting areas and the endurance Ride to the Sea which takes you 250 miles across the Namib Desert is a very different kind of experience. The wildlife is scarcer because of the aridity, but the austere desert country is beautiful and has its own attractions for many, especially those who like fast paced endurance riding. These are just a few of the many varied horse safaris we offer in Africa. Please take a look through these exciting trips and don’t hesitate to call.

Thanks for the MAGNIFICENT trip – it really was amazing and the experience seeped into my soul.  I feel privileged to have experienced the African bush by horseback – to be immersed in the landscape, to physically travel through the plains and alongside wildlife, to not see other tourists while riding, to feel the crunch of hoofs against dirt and see the bones and dung (it was a drought, so bare ground visible) as well as animals, to camp luxuriously under the stars and hear the night noises as well as laughter of fellow travelers.  Thank you all.

Horseback Safaris

Discover africa on horseback.

A horseback safari in Africa is so much more than a ride through the bush – it's a unique and all-encompassing wildlife safari experience for both novice and expert riders and for both the young and young at heart. On horseback, the African landscape embraces you wholeheartedly and offers a glimpse into the tranquil yet unrelenting world of the continent's wildlife.

What are the benefits of a horseback safari?

When imagining a safari to Africa, most travellers conjure visions of olive-green Land Rovers trundling across plains of waving grass. Or perhaps hot-air balloons that are floating silently above the massed herds of the Serengeti. But the thunder of hooves of a stallion cantering across shimmering salt pans? Unlikely.

And yet Africa is one of the world's premier destinations for horseback adventures, blending world-class guides with charming wilderness camps and, of course, the chance to spot the Big 5 from the saddle. If you love adding a bit more adventure to your holiday, a horseback safari in Africa is for you.

This difference between a typical safari and an African horse safari is simple. There's no longer the hum of an engine or predictable acceleration of a pedal to the floor. Instead, you get to blend into the bush, almost like you're one with the wildlife. And besides it being a far "greener" way to explore the wild, you're no longer a mere observer of wildlife but truly experience their circle of life.

If you're after sheer immersion in nature with the ultimate adrenaline rush, a horseback safari in Africa is the way to go.

Where can you go on a horseback safari in Africa?

Horseback safaris are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to other forms of safaris, and many would not head out into the African wilderness any other way! Here are some of our favourite places that offer horseback safaris in Africa.

Horseback safaris in South Africa

A horseback safari in South Africa is one of the best ways to experience the country. Because the landscapes vary so greatly, you’ll never get bored! Besides, it’s much more enjoyable to explore South Africa with the wind in your hair and nothing blocking  your view. Here are our favourite places for a horseback safari.

Garden Route

The 2,500-hectare  Grootbos Garden Lodge  has its own stable yard with 20 well-trained horses. Experienced horse riding instructors lead tours that cater to all experience levels. Ride through the Cape fynbos on an African horse safari and take in the mountain and sea views. You can also enjoy a three-hour horse riding beach excursion to Walker Bay Nature Reserve and meander through dune fynbos to the beach to gallop or canter by the waves.

Hog Hollow Country Lodge  also offers the best way to explore the diverse landscape of the Tsitsikamma Mountains on South Africa's  Garden Route  on horseback or in the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage. At the same time, they support rescue horses that help township children rebuild trust.

Botlierskop Game Reserve  spoils travellers for choice with their luxurious accommodation in the Garden Route. Here, travellers can enjoy an exciting horseback safari and escape to the majestic mountain valleys and beautiful fynbos for a one, two or three-hour horse ride.

Stellenbosch

The wine-making town of  Stellenbosch  offers excellent wines and spectacular views too. And at Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, you can go on a horseback adventure through the wine valley, and it's close to the town's luxurious accommodation

Franschhoek

The Vrede en Lust Estate , nestled at the foothills of the Simonsberg in South Africa's most celebrated  Franschhoek  wine valley, has more than enough to keep you busy. However, it's also great to take a horse ride along the vineyards and get a full view of the estate with Cape Winelands Riding.

Cape Town

Sleepy Hollow Horse Riding School, established in 1975, is the oldest equestrian school in the Noordhoek Valley and allows you to explore why locals are in no hurry to see the end of a typically glorious  Cape Town  day. Truly, there's no better place to go on a horseback safari in South Africa.

Beach outrides are facilitated in groups of no more than six, with guides leading hooves and humans among indigenous vegetation and fynbos, through wetland, among heaped dunes and along 8km of pristine white wild beach.

Horseback safaris in Botswana

A horseback safari in Botswana is the best way to quietly immerse yourself in the vast wilderness this country is renowned for. Plus, this will allow you to admire the many wildlife calling Botswana home from a different perspective.

Mashatu Game Reserve

Mashatu Lodge  operates within the Mashatu Game Reserve in  Botswana  and is the perfect destination for a horse safari in Africa. The terrain is great for riding, with natural ditches and logs to jump over, providing an exhilarating ride and making for the perfect horseback safari experience in Botswana. Regular game sightings include elephants, big cats, antelopes, African wild dogs, jackals, bat-eared foxes, giraffes and the occasional canter with zebras and wildebeest across the plains.

Okavango Delta and Moremi Region

Macatoo Camp  in the  Okavango Delta and Moremi Region  also allows you to explore the largest inland delta in the world from the perch of a thoroughbred Namibian Hanoverian or Kalahari-Arab crossbreed. Qualified guides will share their extensive knowledge of this wilderness, and you'll get to ride up close to the birdlife, game and nature.

Horseback safaris in Kenya

In East Africa, there's never a shortage of wildlife to see. And a horseback safari in Kenya is undoubtedly one of the best ways to experience these iconic landscapes and the diversity of big and small game.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Offbeat Safaris allow you to explore the  Maasai Mara's  iconic plains on horseback and enjoy exciting wildlife encounters. The exceptional guiding and small group numbers guarantee a highly personalised and exclusive experience amid some of the world's most famous natural beauty.

Horseback safaris in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe  is full of dramatic landscapes, endless skies and rich and varied culture. And if you want to experience this in a more immersive way, a horseback safari in Zimbabwe is the answer.

Hwange National Park

With Ride Zimbabwe, you can discover a captivating country of untamed beauty, thriving wildlife and authentic people. With expert guides and horses, this is an experience with wildlife like never before. Wander alongside the wild animals of  Hwange National Park , travel with the sun and hear the drumming of hooves meandering through the land.

Horseback safaris in Zambia

Zambia might be best known as the “Birthplace of the Walking Safari”. However, a horseback safari in Zambia should not be overlooked!

Livingstone

Chundukwa River Lodge  in  Zambia  offers short hour-and-a-half rides to half-day and multi-day bespoke rides along the Zambezi River. There's a large stable yard on-site with horses for all levels of riders in the stables.

Horseback safaris in Namibia

Never-ending desert, glittering salt pans, a shipwreck graveyard... There's just nothing like Namibia's rugged terrains. And a horseback safari in Namibia is the best way to experience it all!

Namib Desert, Damaraland, Skeleton Coast, and More

The Namibia Horse Safari Company specialises in semi-participatory safaris – where you saddle and groom your own horse – across a variety of  Namibia's  most spectacular landscapes.

Horseback safaris in Mozambique

If you dream of cantering along white-sand beaches, swimming in blue seas and enjoying the warm hospitality of island life, look no further than a horseback safari in Mozambique.

Benguerra Island

Mozambique Horse Safari is a family-run organisation with a strong sense of personal pride taken to ensure their riding experiences become treasured memories.

Cantering alongside the elegant motion of a giraffe is an experience you will never forget and the only sounds you will hear, as the wind sighs through the grass and rattles the palms, are the fisheagle's haunting cry, the splash of a disappearing crocodile and the faraway drumming of hooves.

Too many memorable moments to list from the few days I’ve been here, my abs are as sore from laughing as they are from riding and my face hurts from wearing the biggest grin the past three days. So grateful for the experience, to have met such wonderful people, to ride such beautiful horses and have some epic experiences with the local wildlife. Thanks to everyone for making this an incredible trip – I’ll be bragging about the experience for some time and telling so many people to visit and experience a safari or horseback with OHS. Cheers.

To PJ, Barney and every single staff member. Sadly have to leave this wonderful place and its lovely people. Thank you for having me and sharing this beautiful paradise. Loved the rides and learnt a lot from Rodgers. Felt at home from day one. Mokowane – beautiful – would’ve loved to stay there longer and make the journey on horseback – next time! Lovely to see the horses roam free in a herd as nature intended. Happy horses! So much to do so little time... A BIG BIG THANK YOU!!

Thank you for the fantastic five days of wonder. Our family had such a great time and truly enjoyed our time at Kujwana and Mokawane. The highlight was our experiences with Percy and Rodgers – we will ever forget the “Bush Brothers” – their antics and stories are etched in our memories. The staff were fantastic also although I will always look at curried chicken in a different light – thinking of baboons! Thank you again for everything.

Horseback riding vacations in Kenya

Horse Riding Safaris in Kenya On horseback you are on even terms with the wild game – what a thrill! These are the most unique and exciting safaris in East Africa. Our Aloe Blossom Ride pioneered saddle safaris in Masailand and remains the most experienced riding outfitter in the Masai Mara. You are driven out to the base camp and set off on horseback over some of the most dramatic wildlife and scenic country in Africa. The main party rides each day for 6 or 7 hours across country uninterrupted by fences, tarmac roads or even telegraph poles. You will be spellbound by the sense of space and freedom.

Your sturdy surefooted Anglo-Arab and Somali ponies are tacked up with comfortable specially designed trekking saddles with saddlebags attached. The camp moves by truck along bush roads while you follow game trails across Masailand. Each afternoon you find your new camp set up beside a spring or waterhole beneath spreading acacia trees, in time for tea and hot showers before evening sundowners around the campfire. The ‘syces’ (grooms) attend to your horses on the picket line and provide special protection against predators. These safaris are only for the experienced horseman.

Kenya's peoples are as varied and intriguing as its climate and terrain. There are more than 40 tribes most of whom retain their ancient traditions with their distinctive culture and authentic handicrafts. The nomadic pastoral tribes well away from cosmopolitan Nairobi are amongst the most colorful in Africa. These warrior tribes defied the Arab traders who journeyed the Indian Ocean in their ancient dhows to plunder the 'land of Zinj'.

The climate in the highlands is exhilarating. The humid coastal lands give way to the dry desert heat before reaching the highlands at about 4000 ft above sea level where the crisp morning air, huge skies and cool breezes give the whole environment an ever more hypnotic atmosphere.

Camps and Guides We provide large heavy-duty canvas tents (100 sq ft floor space) with flysheets, camp furniture, beds, bedding, gas lights, showers and canvas ‘loos’ in traditional style. The dining tent or canvas awning is supplied with tables and chairs for gracious meals in camp. Meals are prepared by qualified African chefs and served up by well-trained stewards. Each safari is accompanied and managed by a professional ‘hunter’ guide. Explore more East Africa Horse Riding Vacations

Day 1. A new experience.

We pick you up in the Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa airports -even the Johannesburg airport- with our transfer, or you can choose to hire your own transport, if you prefer it. We head to our refugee Wait a Little, which has a breathtaking view to the Makuthswe River, covered with African ebony trees. Considering that for the following days we will be submerging ourselves in the depths of nature, we will first receive a safety talk to understand how we need to take care of ourselves. We use the first horse ride to explore and get to know our horses. We use it to get rid of our former selves, that is, the persons we were before this journey, and let ourselves be taken over by the African universe. Dinner will include wines especially selected for the occasion. The tents are made of canvas and wicker roofs, equipped with private bathrooms, and external showers. The combination of nature and comfort is in perfect balance.

Day 2. At the mercy of the African Nature.

We wake up and have a light breakfast. There is no strict schedules, it all depends on the weather and the animals we find on our way. Physical activity is crucial on our journey: we jump logs and avert bushes. Lunch, cooked by our beloved Ana, may include quiche, cheese, pizzas or pancakes. We then take a few hours to rest: we may take a nap, go to the pool, or get to know more about Africa by consulting the books available in our library. In the afternoon, we give ourselves in to a quiet ride until we reach a place where we can behold the sunset while having a drink.

Day 3. Men propose and Africa disposes.

Generally, horseback riding lasts 3 to 4 hours during the morning, and 2 hours in the afternoon. On the least expected moment, we may find zebras, giraffes, lions, rhinos, crocodiles and cheetahs, to mention a few examples. Afterwards, during the afternoon, we look for the perfect place to contemplate the sunset.

Day 4. Horseback riding to Beacon Rock.

We head to another campsite, which will be our home for the following 3 days. Our luggage will be taken by a car while we ride our horses towards this new place. We ride South, over a slightly uneven ground that allows us to speed up and feel the wind on our faces. The campsite is called Beacon Rock and is located over a rock formation from which we can observed Lowdel’s steep. At night, we have dinner around a bonfire, under the starry night. From afar, we hear the call of hyenas who are taking over the night. Even if we are safe here, we cannot help but think that we are still in the African nature.

Day 5. Hippopotamus and elephants in front of our dwelling.

We have breakfast by the fire and then head to a private hunting reserve called Makalali, an open area where we can gallop and get near giraffes, zebras and wildebeests. In this manner, little by little, we get near XiDulu, the campsite which will be our home for the following 2 days. XiDulu is an idyllic place: the chalet has internal and external showers, a pool and terrace. The deck has a view to the dam where hippopotamus and elephants rest. In the afternoon, we go around with our guide, who reveals the secrets of this area to us. Then, at night, we go out to explore again. We can see owls, galagidae, and maybe -who knows- leopards.

Day 6. Among a dense coppice.

We gallop through the meadow and practice what we call bushwhacking, that is say, we ride our horses through a dense coppice. We jump fallen logs, which elephants may have torn down, or maybe, we encounter antelopes and kudus, that may accompany us on our way. There is a chance to find black rhinos in this zone; our guide knows it and may help us track them down.

Day 7. The big five.

After a light breakfast we ride our horses back to Wait a Little. We may find elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and even lions on our way. Once we reach the campsite, we meet our team and share some delicious home-made meal. The melancholy of the last sunsets confirms that Africa is a turning point in the life of any traveler, nothing will be the same from now on.

Day 8. Farewell.

The last time we saddle our horses. We wake up early and take a morning ride, at dawn, before having breakfast. This is the last time we saddle our horses before we go back to our routine, the last ride with our partners in adventure. Then a transfer service will take us to the airport.

The beauty of a riding holiday at Horizon there is that there is no ‘potentially dangerous’ wildlife and thus they welcome riders of all abilities. However, for the more experienced, there is plenty of fast-paced exploration.

TOUR REVIEWS

” One day a picture of a zebra and a horse having a close encounter popped up in my Instagram explorer. It was the beginning of my most amazing adventure ever! It turns out the picture belonged to African horse safaris and as I scrolled through their feed I just knew I wanted to do it but had no idea where or how or when! I contacted them and Isabel took the best care of me to make sure my trip would be everything I could ever wish for! They are incredibly accommodating and really know their stuff so based on what you want they can really guide you and help with suggestions that will match your desires perfectly! I cannot recommend them high enough and will definitely book with them again! Cynthia Espinoza Horse riding in the Waterberg, South Africa

SAMPLE ITINERARY

There is no set itinerary and activities are extremely flexible. The group size of rides is kept small with no more than 8 guests and they can often accommodate those wishing to go out alone. There are a number activities available aside from outrides, such as a small cross country course (only available to those with previous cross country experience), the chance to swim with your horse, and lastly learning to play Polocrosse.

Each day there is the opportunity for 2 riding activities or outrides. In the morning rides will usually last between 3-4 hours (shorter rides can be requested). These rides will be different every day and with different styles; you might focus on game viewing one day, on another you might want to pick up the pace for some thrill seeking or go exploring through thicker bush. The afternoon rides will be shorter and often taken at a more leisurely pace. During the middle of the day, you may choose to spend your time relaxing, cooling off in the plunge pool or going for a walk in the surrounding bushveld. Throughout your stay you will get the chance to experience all the riding options and enjoy a great diversity of horseback experiences in South Africa.

On the first and last days of your trip you will be transferred between Johannesburg International Airport and the lodge (approx. 3 hours). Depending on the time of your flight there will usually be time to ride in either the morning or afternoon of your travel days, but it’s not guaranteed.

ARRIVAL DAY

You will be picked up from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport for a 3-hour drive to the lodge, where you’ll arrive in time for a late lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll have an introductory ride, designed for a relaxed experience to help you acclimate to your new environment and get to know the horses. As you ride across the open plains, you’ll have your first opportunity to encounter wildlife from horseback, including ostriches, impalas, zebras, kudus, elands, and giraffes.

Before heading back to the lodge for a delightful three-course dinner, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking viewpoint, where you can enjoy sundowner drinks and savour your first taste of Africa after your long journey.

TRAIL RIDES

Morning rides are generally 3-4 hours and afternoon rides are are 1-2 hours, ending with you untacking the horses and letting them wander off into the bush. Witnessing the wildlife and experiencing the bush on horseback is the ultimate way to immerse yourself in nature. Remarkably, the wildlife here doesn’t perceive horses and riders as a threat, allowing you to get close to magnificent creatures like giraffes and zebras on horseback. Often the zebras will allow the horses to become part of the herd and it’s a mesmarizing feeling watching them graze side by side. The sandy trails meander through diverse landscapes, taking you through thickets and across open plains. The group sets the pace. You’ll have long walks where your guides will tell you stories about the plants and animals you encounter. And when the terrain allows, you’ll pick up the pace and enjoy lots of long canters along the sandy tracks – and who knows if the zebra or giraffe will join in the fun?!

For novice or intermediate riders, this is the perfect location to really build up your confidence on well-trained safari horses, and often by the end of the week, even the most nervous riders can be seen cantering along the trails. For experienced riders, there are plenty of trails that allow for long and sometimes very fast canters through the bush.

PICNIC LUNCHES

If you do a full-day ride, a picnic lunch will be served out in the bush under a shady tree on the banks of a river, which crosses an old wagon route once used by the pioneers to congregate for church each Sunday. The peaceful and shady riverine forest will be used to escape the day’s heat, alongside the opportunity for a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters of the flowing streams. As the horses graze quietly, this idyllic setting will transport you back to a time when Africa was traversed only by horseback and many days were spent like this. Mount up again and meander across the plains while the afternoon light bathes the landscape in the most spectacular light and colours. A day to remember!

This inclusive activity welcomes novice riders and those with more riding experience. The knowledgeable hosts provide instructions on how to play, and it’s not uncommon for guests to become quite competitive after a few rounds!

The game combines polo and lacrosse elements and uses a soft ball and lacrosse-style sticks. Players are grouped into teams of three, comprising a scorer, a center, and a defender. The game kicks off with a line-out where the umpire initiates play by throwing the ball into action.

The game’s objective is to pick up or steal the ball, aiming to shoot and score a goal. Tactics may even include skillfully manoeuvring to ride opponents off the pitch, adding an exciting dimension to the competition.

SWIMMING ON HORSEBACK

At Horizon, this activity is among the most sought-after experiences, particularly for those trying it for the first time. Following a morning ride, weather permitting, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a unique adventure – swimming with your horse in the dam near the lodge. The sensation of your horse gliding through the water beneath you is truly exhilarating and refreshing to unwind after a morning of riding. (Please note that swimming cannot be arranged when the hippos are in the dam for safety reasons).

WESTERN GAMES

The team of guides hosts a lively Western games afternoon, offering a series of engaging challenges designed to test the skills of both young riders and adults. These activities may encompass pole-bending, barrel-racing, threading a sword through a stirrup, marshmallow hunting, musical horses, and a variety of other entertaining games. This event fosters a sense of camaraderie among guests and is particularly popular among the younger riders.

The riding area features several small jumps, including welcoming logs and dedicated jumping lanes that cater to riders of various skill levels. These elements are seamlessly integrated into the outrides for added excitement and challenge.

VILLAGE RIDE TO THE LOCAL SCHOOL

Within the expansive farm grounds, there’s a small village named Lehlabile, home to approximately 40 Sotho dwellings, a small primary school, and a creche. Several of Horizon’s staff members were born in this village and spent their formative years there.

Embark on a scenic ride that meanders through the heart of Lehlabile village, allowing you to observe the charming, traditionally painted houses. You’ll have the opportunity to converse with the villagers and visit the local school. Here, you can interact with the schoolchildren, who are often eager to share their songs and dances with you. If you wish to bring gifts, they greatly appreciate donations of items like crayons, pencils, paper, paint, playdough, secondhand books, and toys.

GUIDED BUSH WALK

For a change of pace and a chance for more in depth information on the flora and fauna on the area, our guides will escort you on a walk through the game reserve. A walk is a chance to see the smaller details in the bush and also with over 250 different species of bird on the reserve, it is an ideal opportunity for bird watching.

OPTIONAL RIDE TO CAMP DAVIDSON (EXTRA COST)

While you’re at Horizon, should there be a group of four or more interested guests, you can embark on an excursion to Camp Davidson. This remarkable tented camp offers breathtaking views of the Melk Valley. It’s a camping experience with a touch of luxury, featuring comfortable beds adorned with duvets and fine cotton sheets. The camp has bathrooms boasting modern amenities like flushing toilets, and meals are served on tables dressed in crisp white linen.

In the evening, savour sundowners on our camp deck, followed by dinner under the starlit African sky. The captivating sounds of jackals, zebras, hippos, and the nearby lions will serenade you. The Horizon team expertly handles the arrangements for this unforgettable experience, and payment can be settled directly at the camp.

OPTIONAL BIG GAME DRIVE (EXTRA COST)

Following numerous hours spent in the saddle, you have the choice to pause and head out on an excursion and wildlife safari at a nearby ‘big five’ reserve. This is booked by the lodge and is arranged during your stay, so you’ll likely share the experience with other guests. With qualified guides, this adventure offers up-close encounters with wildlife such as lions, elephants, or buffalos.

DEPARTURE DAY

On your last day, typically, you’ll have the opportunity for one final ride on your beloved horse before indulging in a delightful lunch. If other guests are scheduled to check into your room, you might need to complete the check-out process. However, you can unwind in the shared communal areas until your transfer arrives to take you back to Johannesburg airport.

THE ACCOMMODATION

Room preferences are given to the lodge when booking, but usually it’s up to the Horizon team to allocate suitable rooms to each guest. Families will always be given preference of adjacent rooms or the full use of the chalets. For those happy to share, the Garden Chalets offer the perfect escape. For those travelling solo who prefer their own rooms, the standard rooms are offered with no single supplement.

HORIZON LODGE

All lodge rooms are en suite with either a shower, bath, or both facilities. Seven double rooms are separate from the main lodge: three suites overlook the lake and have a small verandah area; the rondavels are a traditional African dwelling adjacent to the lodge. There are also two double rooms in the main lodge. There is a large living area, dining room and large stoep (or verandah) for guests to enjoy. Three delicious meals are served a day, with afternoon tea before the ride. All drinks are complimentary. Special diet requirements are catered for. The lodge has a swimming pool alongside the lake.

GARDEN CHALETS – HIPPO

Hippo is the most recent of the garden chalets. This building houses three double bedrooms, of similar design and furnishings. Each has its own en suite bathroom with a shower. The two rooms downstairs open onto an airy shared verandah overlooking the lake. The upstairs room has a private balcony which looks out through the trees over the lake.

GARDEN CHALETS – TWIN PEAKS

Twin Peaks chalet is one of the original rondavels of the lodge. It has two double bedrooms with an adjoining verandah. It is close to the main lodge and makes a perfect spot for families. Both rooms have en suite bathrooms with showers. The shared verandah overlooks the garden towards the swimming pool and lake.

GARDEN CHALETS – OVAL

The Oval garden chalet sits on the edge of the lake. It has its own private verandah overlooking the lake. This chalet has one double bedroom with an en suite bathroom with a shower. There is a decked jetty in front of the chalet, which is a wonderful vantage point to view the hippo when in the dam and the resident birdlife.

GARDEN CHALETS – ROCK LODGE

This is a private garden chalet nestled in the western side of the lodge garden. It has a private verandah at the front of the cottage, which overlooks the edge of the lake and is a wonderful spot to watch the sun set. This chalet has one double bedroom with an en suite bathroom with a bath and outside rock shower. For special occasions, a private dinner can be arranged on the verandah.

STANDARD ROOMS

The Lodge 1 room is a double room in the main lodge, which has double glass doors opening out onto the garden. This room is en suite with a shower and a bath. The Lodge 2 room is a double room in the main lodge, which has double glass doors opening out onto the garden. This room is en suite with a shower.

THE DESTINATION

The untamed Waterberg is rich in cultural, archaeological and biological diversity. The area’s iconic beauty and bio-diversity has been awarded the status of a World Biosphere reserve by UNESCO. This is a wildlife Eden and set in the middle of its vast wilderness and the safari possibilities seem as endless as the horizon itself.

Horizon Lodge is based on a small working ranch in the depths of the Waterberg. The ranch itself and neighbouring reserves are home to giraffe, hippo, jackal, hartebeest, impala, kuda, zebra and baboon. Camp Davidson is a half days ride away and set up high in the bushveld, above the Matlapeng Valley.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Horizon Horseback are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • Each horse has its own fitted tack. Saddles are checked regularly and all tack is cleaned after every ride
  • Horses at Horizon live out in the reserve and will often see animals such as zebra, wildebeest and antelope while out in the veldt. This gets them acquainted with the wildlife before they are taken on trail with experienced staff and seasoned trail horses
  • Horses have dedicated rest days each week and a varied routine, including schooling, lunging, jumping, mounted games and trail rides
  • Our horses live out in a herd environment, allowing them to live as naturally as possible once they have carried you home safely. Living out in huge open spaces allows the horses freedom to graze naturally, but they come in at least once a day for hard feed and to be checked over

Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.

This tour gives you a chance to follow the path of the wildebeest migration through the famous Maasai Mara. Some of my most exciting safari memories were made in the Maasai Mara, and I highly recommend it !

While the peek of the migration takes place roughly from July to October, animals are moving all year long . Riding across the savannah among the animals, with no sounds of vehicles getting in the way, is a remarkable experience.

You’ll even cross the Mara River as the wildebeest do – unless, of course, it’s in full flood!

You’ll take daily rides in the Masai Mara , picnic in idyllic spots, and spend blissful evenings listening to the sounds of Africa. Cozy up on a comfy mattress and linens in camp and wake up refreshed.

African Horse Safaris: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: are horse safaris safe.

A: Yes . You might wonder, what happens should you come across a predator, such as a lion, while on horseback? While this very well may happen, horses are much larger than a lion’s usual prey.

Plus, the horses you’ll be riding are very used to the types of wildlife you’ll be seeing. Spooking isn’t an issue. As well, your guides are well-trained in how to handle any situation you might come across. No worries!

Q: What is the best month for an African safari on horseback?

A: Generally, the months between June and October are ideal. This period marks the dry season, which is associated with excellent wildlife sightings. With thinner foliage and shorter grass, animals have fewer hiding spots.

Also, during the dry season water sources are limited, making animals’ movements more predictable. But I’ve gone on safaris at all different times of the year, and I’ve never been disappointed.

Q: What time of year is cheapest for safari?

A: Shoulder season can be a less expensive time to go on a safari. This is roughly from November and December, between falls between the rainy and dry seasons. Wildlife viewing is still fantastic, fewer people are around, and you could get some good deals on safaris.

Q: Is Kenya or Tanzania better for Safari?

A: While you can’t go wrong with either option, Kenya does tend to experience a larger influx of tourists. If you prefer a more “wild” safari with fewer people around, Tanzania may be a better choice for you.

Q: How far in advance should you plan a safari?

A: If you plan to travel during high season (aka. dry season, June-October) and want your choice of experiences, advanced planning is important. Try to book your safari at least 9 months to a year before you’d like to start your journey.

Q: What do you wear on a horse safari?

A: If you are going on a multi-day horse safari, gloves, jodhpurs, short chaps, and short boots are a good idea. Some of this may be provided for you, as a helmet will – be sure to check with your tour provider before you pack. Jeans are fine for a day safari.

Be prepared for cool mornings with a fleece and knit hat. Stick to neutral colours that blend into the bush, avoiding dark and bright colours that attract mosquitoes and tsetse flies.

Q: How does a horse safari impact the environment and local communities?

A: Many horse safari operators in Africa are committed to eco-friendly practices and community involvement. Horse safaris typically have a low environmental impact compared to vehicle safaris.

As well, some safari operators support local communities through employment opportunities and contributions to conservation efforts.

Q: What is the first rule of safari?

A: The most important thing to remember when on safari is to be aware. You’re in a place where the wildlife rules the landscape. If you get distracted and do something you shouldn’t, like keep food in your tent, your holiday may take a turn for the worse.

Did sub-Saharan Africa have horses?

Yes . Sub-Saharan Africa had horses, but their presence was limited by geographical and environmental factors, such as the tsetse fly, which spreads diseases harmful to horses. Horses were introduced into North Africa by ancient civilizations and gradually spread southward.

A Botswana horse safari is a great way to experience the scenery and wildlife. You’ll be able to tour the south African country on horseback, getting up close with the animals and connecting with nature.

Visit this destination to camp under the stars, explore the desert, discover the wetlands, and see animals, such as lions, giraffes, elephants, and meerkats. You’ll find a wonderful African horse safari with Horse Tours Club.

Equestrian History of Botswana

Horses have been in Africa since the Bronze Age; however, they weren’t introduced to southern Africa until 1653. They were brought from South Africa to Botswana in the 19th century.

Since then, their population has increased, especially when the country gained independence in 1966. Today, horses are mostly used for hunting, endurance competitions, and safaris.

Breeds in Botswana

There are only a couple of breeds native to Botswana. The Tswana is a breed from the area around Maun, a town in northern Botswana. The animals are well-accustomed to the country’s climate, and they’re bred for outbreeding, working equitation, meat, racing, and sport riding.

The Kalahari pony is also locally adapted. These ponies are well-tempered and good with children. They’re responsive, fit, and reliable.

You can find many other breeds in Botswana that are not native to the area, including the Arabian, Appaloosa, South African Boer, Nooitgedachter, Hanoverian, Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Warmblood and Welsh pony.

Your Horse-Riding Safari in Botswana

There are a number of tours to choose from on a trip to Botswana. On each one, an expert guide will show you the land and take you on an adventure you’ll never forget.

On your horse safari, you can visit the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert all in one tour. You’ll see the incredible contrast between these two places in a matter of days. The Okavango Delta is an inland river delta that floods annually, turning it into a flourishing animal habitat. It’s known for its extensive grassy plains. While you’re on your riding holiday here, you’ll have the opportunity experience to see animals such as hippos, elephants, crocodiles, lions, leopards, giraffes, and rhinos.

You can also go on an adventure near the Thamalakane River, a river on the southern side of the Okavango Delta with no clear beginning or end. On this tour, you’ll stay in luxurious tented accommodations located on the banks of the river. The lodgings feature a refreshing pool and beautiful sun deck.

But let’s not forget what you’re there to see. On this adventure, you’ll explore the reserve which is home to giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, and various birds. Ride through the expansive acacia woodlands and along the gorgeous Thamalakane River. You can fly over the Okavango Delta on a thrilling helicopter ride and spot these animals. Take a river cruise in a mokoro—a wooden canoe with a flat bottom perfect for navigating shallow floodplains and channels. You’ll spend the day peering into the clear waters of the river with a canoe guide poling you along.

The Kalahari Desert covers much of Botswana and some of Namibia and South Africa. It’s about 359,000 square miles (900,000 sq km), the eighth largest desert in the world. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve—the second-largest protected area in the world—makes its home there.

You’ll have a charming camp here with a restoring pool surrounded by acacias and mokolwane palm trees. Ride through regions like the “Land of a Thousand Islands.” Once a lake bed, this area is now all sand dunes and palm trees. In this desert, you’ll go on game drives to try to spot animals like mysterious brown hyenas, aardvarks, bat-eared foxes, porcupines, honey badgers, and the imposing black-maned Kalahari lion.

Visit the Makgadikgadi Pan, one of the largest salt flats in the world. Our providers offer horse riding holidays in both the green season and the dry season. In the green season, the area turns into a wetland filled with shallow water and nutrient-filled grass that attracts animals of all kinds. On this wildlife-focused tour, you’ll ride among thousands of zebras and see other animals like lions, ostriches, meerkats, and flamingos. You can even camp in the pans among the animals and under the stars.

During the dry season, the Makgadikgadi salt pans are bright white, and the wildlife retreats to the grass islands that have watering holes. If you love galloping, this might be the tour for you. You can race across the salt pans and even take night rides. But don’t worry about missing out on the animals—you can still spot them on the grass islands.

Year-round you can see the infamous baobabs, deciduous trees with disproportionately broad trunks and compact crowns that grow from 20 to 100 feet tall (5-30 m). These trees are known as the “tree of life” because they provide so much life. Locals eat their leaves and make drinks from their seeds and the pulp of their fruits. As you can imagine, they are extremely culturally significant.

You can also meet the local bushmen. The Zu/’hoasi people, also known as the San, live at Jack’s Camp in the Makgadikgadi, and they offer insights about surviving in such a harsh environment. They share knowledge about plants, animals, and survival skills. Their community preserves traditions through hunting, gathering, and crafting, but they have also adapted to modern changes. On your trip, you can visit their traditional village and take a guided walk through the bush with their elders, where they’ll share knowledge about the region.

There are so many fantastic options in Botswana to choose from. No matter what you choose, Horse Tours Club will ensure you have the best vacation possible. We offer global horse riding tours, guaranteeing safety and quality for our customers. Book your Botswanan horseback riding tour through Horse Tours Club today!
