More than half of the invited LIV golfers are former Masters champions, giving them a lifetime invite to the tournament.

Defending Masters champion Jon Rahm , who did not sign with LIV until December 2023, leads LIV golfers in odds to win the Masters.

What is LIV?

The breakout professional golf tour, which started in 2022, is run by CEO  Greg Norman , financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and offers outrageous purses.

It is pronounced "liv," as in "live free," and is not an acronym.

The name was created for two reasons:

In Roman numerals, LIV is 54. Each of LIV's events feature 54 players and are contested over 54 holes. Also, if a golfer birdies every hole on a par-72 course the score is 54.

The Palm Beach Post contributed to this report.

LIV players in the Masters: The list is set with 18 eligible to play at Augusta National

With two weeks to go before the Masters, the members of the LIV Golf League who will be eligible to play at Augusta National is all but set.

Augusta National announced late last year that its current qualifications for an invitation would remain in force, regardless of what professional tour to which a player belonged.

Since LIV players haven’t been able to gain entry into the Masters through categories such as winning on the PGA Tour (since last June), being among the top-30 on the 2022 FedEx Cup points list or rising into the top-50 on the World Golf Rankings, they have to rely on status as past major champions (lifetime for the Masters, within the past five years for the U.S. Open, PGA and British Open) or last year’s world rankings.

Augusta will invite anyone among the current top-50 in the world after this week but the closest LIV player to No. 50 who is not in the Masters is Dean Burmester at No. 74, followed by Cameron Tringale at No. 87.

How to get into the Masters: Can Rickie Fowler, others still qualify to play in the 2023 Masters? Yes, and here’s how

The latter is what rankles LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman. The World Golf Rankings board has yet to rule on whether LIV golf events will receive points, so the only events they have been able to get points are the major championship, the DP World Tour (under a court injunction) and some Asian events.

There is only one more week to get into the top-50 in the world to reach the Masters. Winning on the PGA Tour will get a player to Augusta through next week's Valero Texas Open.

The PGA Tour is in Austin, Texas this week for the Dell Technologies Match Play and in the Dominican Republic, and the DP World Tour is playing in South Africa.

Here are the LIV players who will be in the Masters and their eligibility category:

Captain Bryson DeChambeau of Crushers GC, Captain Jon Rahm of Legion XIII GC, Captain Bubba Watson of RangeGoatsGC, Captain Dustin Johnson of 4Aces GC, Captain Phil Mickelson of HyFlyers GC, Captain Brooks Koepka of Smash GC, Adrian Meronik of Cleeks GC, (front row) Tyrrell Hatton of Legion XIII GC, Charl Schwartzel of Stinger GC, Captain Sergio Garcia of Fireballs GC, Patrick Reed of 4Aces GC, Captain Joaquin Niemann of Torque GC and Captain Cameron Smith of Ripper GC pose for a photo before LIV Golf Miami 2024

After months of speculation as to whether LIV Golf players would be eligible for the first Major of 2023, The Masters , eventually they were given the nod to appear, with 18 making it to Augusta National .

With the 2024 edition now here, there are 13 of the Saudi-backed circuit's players in the field - with 8 dropping out from last year's Masters .

A total of seven LIV Golfers have won The Masters and therefore have secured entry for the rest of their careers, like Rahm, Mickelson and Garcia.

Here is how the 13 LIV Golfers have secured their places in the 2024 Masters field:

Which LIV Golfers Are Playing In The 2024 Masters?

  • Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau's place was confirmed after his 2020 US Open win

The Crushers GC captain already knew he'd qualified before his heroics of 2023. That’s because he won the 2020 US Open, which immediately granted him eligibility to The Masters for the next five years.

Still, his performance at the PGA Championship a month later would have seen him at the tournament even without his Major triumph. The top four and ties at the Oak Hill Major secured spots at The Masters, and DeChambeau finished above the line with a T4.

  • Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia during the 2023 LIV Golf Bedminster tournament

When the Spaniard claimed the Green Jacket in the 2017 Masters, it earned him one of the game’s great privileges - a place at the tournament for life.

With his participation guaranteed, the Fireballs GC captain will be hoping to improve on his outing in 2023, when he missed the cut following disappointing rounds of 74 and 77.

  • Tyrrell Hatton

Tyrrell Hatton booked his Masters slot through two routes

Hatton is a relatively recent addition to the LIV Golf roster, but his Masters invite was already secure by the time he made his move to join Jon Rahm 's Legion XIII team thanks to his appearance at the 2023 Tour Championship and world ranking inside the top 50.

He'll be hopeful of surpassing his best finish at the Major - a T18 at the 2021 event.

  • Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson secured a place for life after his win at the 2020 Masters

Not too long ago, there were numerous ways the former World No.1 could guarantee a place at The Masters in most years, including his 2016 US Open win and world ranking.

That’s all changed since his LIV Golf switch, but, like Garcia, his Masters title trumps everything else. Johnson claimed the Green Jacket in 2020, making it the last time he needed to worry about how to reach Augusta National.

  • Brooks Koepka

Brooks Koepka has no issues over qualification for the next five years

The Smash GC captain almost secured the same honour as Garcia and Johnson in 2023, but by his own admission, he “choked away” his chance of winning The Masters with a disappointing final round to eventually settle for T2.

While Koepka ’s long-term participation in the Major remains in doubt, he was already guaranteed his place in 2024 thanks to his second PGA Championship triumph five years ago.

Even without that, his performance last year would have secured his spot as he finished in the top 12, while his third PGA Championship title a month later means he’s now safe until after the 2028 tournament. To cap it off, he was also in the world’s top 50 in the final week of 2023, which would have earned him a spot too.

  • Adrian Meronk

Adrian Meronk's world ranking earned him a place at the tournament

Meronk signed for LIV Golf at the same time as Hatton, and the Pole will join the Englishman at the tournament thanks to his world ranking at the end of 2023 - he finished the year two places inside the cut-off at World No.48.

The 2024 tournament will mark just Meronk's second appearance at Augusta National. He will be hopeful of a better display than in 2023, too, when he missed the cut.

  • Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson takes a tee shot at the 2023 LIV Golf Bedminster tournament

Phil Mickelson has been guaranteed qualification for two decades

When Mickelson won the 2021 PGA Championship title to become the oldest player to win a Major, it guaranteed his participation in all four Majors for at least the next five years.

By that point, though, any concerns over qualifying for The Masters had long been addressed. Lefty claimed his first of three Masters titles in 2004 to guarantee his place for life. In any case, his T2 in 2023 would have seen him qualify, as it came well within the top 12 needed for a spot.

  • Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann accepted a special invite to the tournament

The 2024 LIV Golf Mayakoba winner seemed to have all but run out of options to qualify for the tournament, with his world ranking far beneath the top 50 he'd need to attain by the week before it begins.

However, he booked his place thanks to receiving a special invite , meaning he will now make his fifth appearance at the Major.

Jon Rahm takes a shot during a pro-am before the 2023 DP World Tour Championship

Jon Rahm's 2023 Masters win guarantees him a place for life

The LIV Golf newcomer was already guaranteed his place at the 2024 Masters thanks to his US Open title at Torrey Pines three years ago, but victory at Augusta National last year rubber-stamped his participation for life.

There were several other ways Rahm would have qualified regardless, namely his T2 at the 2023 Open, appearance at August’s Tour Championship and world ranking of third at the end of last year.

  • Patrick Reed

Patrick Reed is one of 10 LIV Golf players guaranteed a place at the 2024 Masters

The 33-year-old is another LIV Golf player who knows he’ll never need to qualify for The Masters again. The American earned his lifetime exemption thanks to his 2018 triumph when he edged out Rickie Fowler by a shot.

In any case, Reed would have appeared in 2024 thanks to his performance last year, where he finished inside of the top 12 with a T4.

  • Charl Schwartzel

Charl Schwartzel won the 2011 Masters to ensure future qualification

It’s been some time since the South African claimed his one Major title, but as a result of his 2011 win in at Augusta National, Schwartzel is the sixth LIV Golf player who needn’t lose sleep over how to reach the tournament.

The 39-year-old can instead turn his attention to how to repeat the feat or at least finish in the top 10 of the tournament, which he last achieved in 2022.

  • Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith's win at the 2022 Players Championship ensured his participation

The Australian’s win at the 150th Open ensured his involvement at The Masters until after the 2027 tournament, but by that time, he had already bagged his spot at the 2024 event after winning The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass four months earlier.

Smith's performance at last year’s US Open, where he finished fourth, would also have secured him a place. Lastly, despite being with LIV Golf for well over a year by the end of 2023, he remained well inside the top 50 of the world rankings, which would have offered another avenue to the tournament had he needed it.

  • Bubba Watson

Bubba Watson has claimed two Masters titles

The Range Goats GC captain has had the luxury of knowing he can always play in The Masters for 12 years after his win at the 2012 tournament. He claimed his second Green Jacket two years later, which helped retain his participation in the other three Majors for longer.

Nowadays, The Masters is the American’s only guarantee of a Major appearance. He will be hoping to make his opportunity count in 2024 after missing the cut last year.

Who are the LIV Golf players competing at the Masters?

Phil Mickelson is a three-time Masters winner.

For months, golf fans — and pro golfers — wondered if Augusta National would allow LIV Golf members to compete in the Masters, and in December we got our answer: yes.

While this is the case for 2023, the statement also noted, “We look at every aspect of the Tournament each year, and any modifications or changes to invitation criteria for future Tournaments will be announced in April.”

As the current criteria stands, 18 golfers will receive invitations to play in the tournament through six different qualification standards.

The 18 LIV Golf members at the Masters are:

Phil Mickelson Charl Schwartzel Bubba Watson Sergio Garcia Patrick Reed Dustin Johnson Brooks Koepka Bryson DeChambeau Cameron Smith Mito Pereira Joaquin Niemann Abraham Ancer Thomas Pieters Harold Varner III Jason Kokrak Kevin Na Louis Oosthuizen Talor Gooch

There are nineteen different ways in which an individual can qualify to tee it up at the Masters. (The Masters Committee also often invites several international players who are “not otherwise qualified.”)

Past Masters champions receive lifetime invitations to the tournament, and six LIV golfers have previously donned the green jacket.

Phil Mickelson (2004, 2006, 2010) Charl Schwartzel (2011) Bubba Watson (2012, 2014) Sergio Garcia (2017) Patrick Reed (2018) Dustin Johnson (2020)

Mickelson also qualifies as a PGA champion from within the past five years, and Schwartzel and Johnson both finished top 12 at the last Masters, which would get them in even if they weren’t past winners.

Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith and Bubba Watson.

Want drama? The 2023 Masters guarantees it with LIV golfers sharing the stage

Anyone who has won the U.S. Open in the previous four years also receives an invitation. Both Koepka (2018) and DeChambeau (2020) are still within that window. Koepka would also gain an exemption from his previous PGA Championship victory in 2019.

The same criteria is also true of the Open Championship, which means that the current Champion Golfer of the Year, Cameron Smith (2022), got his invitation to Georgia in the mail.

The top-four finishers and ties from the previous year’s PGA Championship qualify, which gets Pereira in despite his disastrous 18th hole at Southern Hills.

Seven LIV golfers qualify based on being inside the top 50 in the final Official World Golf Rankings from the previous calendar year.

Joaquin Niemann (22) Abraham Ancer (30) Thomas Pieters (37) Harold Varner III (45) Jason Kokrak (47) Kevin Na (49) Louis Oosthuizen (50)

(Smith, Pereira and Johnson would also get in from being top 50 in 2022 OWGR.)

And finally, any golfer who made it to the Tour Championship field in the previous year receives an invite, which is Talor Gooch’s ticket through the gates. (Niemann would also qualify through this had he not been in the top 50 in the OWGR.)

“Regrettably, recent actions have divided men’s professional golf by diminishing the virtues of the game and the meaningful legacies of those who built it,” part of Augusta National’s statement read. “Although we are disappointed in these developments, our focus is to honor the tradition of bringing together a preeminent field of golfers this coming April.”

How will everything shake out on site come Masters week? Let the countdown begin.

Did any LIV Golf players make Masters cut? Yep. In fact, one of them is tied for the lead.

Editor's note: Check out complete coverage of the Masters here , including the leaderboard, highlights and more.

The 2024 Masters got underway Thursday with 13 LIV Golf players in the field of 89, led by defending champion Jon Rahm , who joined the Saudi-funded tour in December 2023.

By Friday evening, all but five still remained in the field .

Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson are among eight LIV golfers that made the cut line at 6-over and will be playing into the weekend at Augusta National.

DeChambeau is tied atop the leaderboard with fellow Americans Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa, who all are 6-under through two rounds. DeChambeau, who joined LIV Golf in June 2022, came out the gate strong on day one and hit eight birdies and one bogey in the first round. On Friday, he shot a 1-over 73 with three birdies and four bogeys.

The remaining LIV golfers will take a lot of championship experience into the final two rounds — they've won a collective five Masters titles between the eight of them. DeChambeau is in pursuit of his first Green Jacket. His best showing was at the 2016 Masters when he finished tied for 21st place.

Here's how every LIV player did in the first two days of the 2024 Masters:

Which LIV golfers made the cut at the 2024 Masters?

Defending champion Jon Rahm's repeat hopes are still (technically) alive after he squeaked by and finished one stroke above the cut line at 5-over. Here's all the LIV golfers that made the cut:

  • Bryson DeChambeau (-6)
  • Cameron Smith (-1)
  • Patrick Reed (E)
  • Brooks Koepka (+2)
  • Tyrrell Hatton (+2)
  • Phil Mickelson (+4)
  • Joaquin Niemann (+4)
  • Jon Rahm (+5)

  • Bubba Watson (+10)
  • Charl Schwartzel (+11)
  • Dustin Johnson (+13)
  • Adrian Meronk (+14)

Was Greg Norman at the 2024 Masters?

Yes. LIV Golf's top executive, Greg Norman , a two-time major winner who finished as a runner-up at the Masters three times (1986, 1987, 1996), was on hand at Augusta National to cheer on all LIV participants.

"I’m here because we have 13 players that won 10 Masters between them," Norman  told the Washington Post on Wednesday. "So I’m here just to support them, do the best I can to show them, 'Hey, you know, the boss is here rooting for you.'"

LIV Golf Masters Leaderboard: updates, scores for LIV tour as DeChambeau dominates

Editor's note: Follow live coverage of the Masters, leaderboard, highlights and more.

The Masters are here.

The first major tournament of the year started on Thursday, and nearly 90 players were at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia to contend for a highly sought-after green jacket. Thirteen of them are LIV golfers.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

Spanish golfer, LIV participant and 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm will be looking to become the fourth golfer in Masters history to win back-to-back jackets and the first since Tiger Woods in 2001-02.

Several other LIV golfers likely will be in contention for a Masters win by the end of the weekend as well, with Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and up-and-comer Joaquín Niemann also among favorites.

Though it's red-hot American (and non-LIV golfer) Scottie Scheffler who wass the early favorite after winning his second consecutive Players Championship last month. He also won this year's Arnold Palmer Invitational just one week before his Players win. Scheffler played remarkably well on Day 1 as well, shooting 6-under on Day 1. Still, he sits in second place heading into Friday as LIV's Bryson DeChambeau leads all golfers at 7-under after Thursday.

The World’s Highest-Paid Golfers 2024

Jon rahm is no. 1 with a record $218 million in earnings—more than double the next highest player—despite not winning a tournament this year. and five other liv golfers join him atop the leaderboard., by justin birnbaum , forbes staff.

In 2022, when Scottie Scheffler wrapped up his final round at the BMW Championship in Wilmington, Delaware, he accomplished something no player on the PGA Tour had ever done before. The world’s No. 1 golfer posted a record-breaking $14 million in regular season earnings . A year earlier, Jon Rahm topped the PGA Tour’s official money list with a little more than half that amount, $7.7 million.

Scheffler followed that campaign with another extraordinary season, obliterating his own record and earning more than $21 million last year. And as impressive as that may have been, the 27-year-old has already surpassed his mark again, having won more than $24 million with roughly a third of the 2024 golf season remaining. Scheffler has been dominant on the course again, winning the Masters for the second time and four other tournaments. But he’s also been the beneficiary of rising financial tides in the sport.

The PGA Tour will award $402.4 million in prize money in just the 2024 regular season alone, with roughly another $340 million on the table when factoring the four Majors, a slate of yet-to-be scheduled fall events and bonus pools from the FedEx Cup, the Comcast Business Tour Top 10 and the Player Impact Program. That amounts to more than $740 million disbursed to players this year, about 9% more than the $680 million from the 2022-23 season. (In 2024, the PGA Tour returned to a calendar year format as opposed to the multi-year schedule it had used since 2013.)

A lucrative media rights package spread across CBS, NBC, ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery, which reportedly pays the PGA Tour nearly $900 million per year, has played a role in the sport’s financial growth. Despite the progress the PGA Tour has made, it’s a player from LIV Golf, Jon Rahm, who is the highest-paid golfer for 2024.

The breakaway tour, backed by the $925 billion (assets) Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, has permanently altered the economics of golf with its unusual format and astronomical paydays . By the time LIV completes its third season in 2024, it will have awarded nearly $1.1 billion in prize money, on top of committing at least $1 billion in guarantees to entice the defections of star golfers to the upstart league.

“It’s simple economics,” says Tim Derdenger, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business. “Competition is good for the players.”

Combined, the world’s 10 highest-paid golfers earned an estimated $678 million over the past 12 months before taxes and agents’ fees, a 10% decrease from $752 million in 2023. That’s mainly because LIV has slowed its outsized spending spree in the past year, with Rahm being the only big-name defection. The 29-year-old Spaniard joined the Saudi-backed tour for a reported $350 million guarantee, half of which Forbes estimates he received up front. With total earnings of $218 million, he’s the third LIV golfer to rank No. 1 on our list in the last three years even though he has yet to win an event on his new tour.

Rory McIlroy, a stalwart PGA Tour player, is a distant second this year with $83 million in total earnings, despite collecting victories at the Genesis Open, the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship over the past 12 months. The 35-year-old McIlroy remains the most successful pitchman not named Tiger Woods in the sport, partnering with Nike, Optum, and Workday, among others. Woods, who pulled in an estimated $67 million and left Nike in January after 27 years to launch a joint apparel venture with TaylorMade called Sun Day Red, ranked No. 3, just ahead of the fourth-place Scheffler at $61 million.

The long-term impact of golf’s fractured landscape, however, remains unclear. While the warring tours have increased player earnings over the past few years, dividing the best golfers in the world has left fans and longtime sponsors of the sport with a less-compelling product. A solution appeared to be on the horizon last June when the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund agreed to join forces to form a new for-profit, commercial entity called PGA Tour Enterprises. The move, which ended a slew of bitter legal battles between the tours, has also drawn antitrust concerns from Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Negotiations have stalled and, in the meantime, the PGA Tour found another investor in a consortium of American billionaires. Strategic Sports Group, which is backed Boston Red Sox co-owners John Henry and Tom Werner, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, as well as other investors, imbued the nascent enterprise with $3 billion in January. In the months since, PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan has outlined a $1.5 billion equity program earmarked for players on tour, and Woods joined the PGA Tour Enterprises’ 13-member board of directors.

While the recent resignation of Jimmy Dunne, a PGA Tour policy member and one of the architects behind the initial deal with the PIF, has done little to inspire hope that a revised agreement is coming any time soon, the PGA Tour issued a vague statement citing progress from a recent meeting in New York on June 7. “Definitely things are heading in the right direction,” McIlroy told reporters at the Memorial Tournament over the weekend . “A lot of progress was made. I can't really say much more than that, but it was really positive.”

THE WORLD’S 10 HIGHEST-PAID GOLFERS 2024

No. 1 • $218 million

On-course: $198 million | off-course: $20 million | age: 29 | tour: liv.

Lintao Zhang/Getty Images

Much like many of his LIV compatriots, Rahm’s move to the upstart league cost him a slew of sponsors. In July, he signed a multi-year extension with digital supply chain firm Blue Yonder, having previously worn their logo on his chest. However, the partnership is no longer active and he now wears the logo of his LIV team, Legion XIII, in that spot. Rahm will not compete in the U.S. Open this weekend due to a foot injury.

No. 2 • $83 million

Rory mcilroy, on-course: $38 million | off-course: $45 million | age: 35 | tour: pga.

Andrew Redington/Getty Images

One of the PGA Tour’s most outspoken supporters since the arrival of LIV Golf, McIlroy recently lamented how the division have played out. “In hindsight, I wish I hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved in it,” he told reporters last month . The ongoing tour drama hasn’t stopped his momentum off the course, though. McIlroy cofounded TMRW Sports with Tiger Woods and sports executive Mike McCarley, which plans to launch a stadium-based, virtual golf league in 2025, while his Symphony Ventures has invested in companies like Puttery, Hyperice and Whoop.

No. 3 • $67 million

Tiger woods, on-course: $12 million | off-course: $55 million | age: 48 | tour: pga.

Woods may no longer be the Major-winning machine he once was, but he still found a way to break another record this year. In April, he made the cut at the Masters for the 24th consecutive time, passing Gary Player and Fred Couples. Unfortunately, his pursuit of a sixth green jacket came up far short. Woods finished 60th at Augusta.

No. 4 • $61 million

Scottie scheffler, on-course: $41 million | off-course: $20 million | age: 27 | tour: pga.

Keyur Khamar/PGA TOUR/Getty Images

Scheffler currently has a vice grip on the World Golf Ranking’s No. 1 spot. His only blemish in 2024 was a traffic-related incident while on the way to the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club that resulted in the alleged assault of a Louisville police officer and Scheffler’s subsequent arrest . The charges were dropped two weeks later, though he told reporters he’s still struggling with the incident . “It’s not something that I love reliving, just because it was fairly traumatic for me being arrested going into the golf course.”

No. 5 • $47 million

Cameron smith, on-course: $43 million | off-course: $4 million | age: 30 | tour: liv.

Asanka Ratnayake/Getty Images

Smith may have received a reported $100 million guarantee to join LIV Golf, but his time with the upstart tour has been far more lucrative on the course than a decade spent competing in PGA Tour events and Majors. In three seasons, the 2022 British Open Champion has won just shy of $40 million in prize money with LIV , according to Spotrac, roughly $5 million more than his career total on the PGA Tour .

No. 6 • $44 million

Bryson dechambeau, on-course: $43 million | off-course: $1 million | age: 30 | tour: liv.

Warren Little/Getty Images

DeChambeau may not have the endorsement portfolio he once had, a list that once included Cobra Puma Golf, Bridgestone and Rocket Mortgage, among others. But his lighter sponsorship load has opened other opportunities, such as growing his YouTube presence. DeChambeau’s channel now has more than 670,000 subscribers and over 76 million views, with a nine-hole match between DeChambeau and Mickelson scoring 2.6 million views alone.

No. 7 • $43 million

Brooks koepka, on-course: $35 million | off-course: $8 million | age: 34 | tour: liv.

Maddie Meyer/Getty Images

Koepka celebrated his 34th birthday last month by winning the fourth LIV Golf event of his career at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore, which made him the career leader in titles on the nascent tour. He also remains the only golfer to win a Major under the LIV banner, with a victory at the 2023 PGA Championship. Off the course, Koepka has partnerships with Nike, Srixon and NetJets.

No. 8 • $40 million

Viktor hovland, on-course: $33 million | off-course: $7 million | age: 26 | tour: pga.

Hovland is still chasing his first Major title and he’s come achingly close, finishing second to Koepka at the PGA Championship last year. In the meantime, he has plenty to celebrate. Hovland secured the FedEx Cup crown in 2023, which came with an $18 million bonus.

No. 9 • $38 million

Phil mickelson, on-course: $36 million | off-course: $2 million | age: 53 | tour: liv.

Mike Stobe/Getty Images

Mickelson has earned more than $1 billion in his golf career, becoming the second player, after Woods, to surpass that mark. However, his ability to spend has become equally infamous. The 53-year-old allegedly bet more than $1 billion over the past three decades, with losses reaching as much as $100 million, according to a book written by renowned professional gambler Billy Walters . Off the course, Mickelson has become significantly less active since joining LIV, but he did cofound coffee company For Wellness in 2020.

No. 10 • $37 million

Dustin johnson, on-course: $32 million | off-course: $5 million | age: 39 | tour: liv.

Jon Ferrwy/LIV Golf/Getty Images

Johnson gave a simple explanation for why he joined LIV Golf. “Play less golf, play for more money—it just made sense,” he told Forbes in 2022 . The two-time Major winner hasn’t quite earned the roughly $75 million he did in his PGA Tour career yet, but with $56 million in LIV prize money, according to Spotrac, and a reported guarantee of $125 million, he’s not exactly hurting for cash. The 39-year-old also recently joined a slew of legendary athletes, including Derek Jeter, Serena Williams and Michael Strahan, as an investor in Cincoro Tequila.

METHODOLOGY

This year’s list of the world’s highest-paid golfers tracks earnings over the last 12 months, dating to the 2023 U.S. Open. The on-course earnings figures include prize money and bonuses, as well as upfront payments golfers received for signing with LIV Golf. Based on conversations with a dozen industry sources, Forbes estimates top-tier LIV players received half of their guarantees upfront while lower-tier players received smaller sums in bulk. Forbes estimates any remaining signing money is being paid in equal annual installments across four-year contracts. Bonuses from the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program are included in on-course income, while payments for joining the TGL were not included since the league pushed its start back to 2025.

The off-course earnings figures are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees and memorabilia and licensing income over the last 12 months, plus cash returns from any businesses in which the athlete has a significant interest. Forbes does not include investment income such as interest payments or dividends but does account for payouts from equity stakes athletes have sold. Forbes does not deduct for taxes or agents’ fees.

2024 U.S. Open TV schedule, coverage, where to watch online, live stream, channel, golf tee times

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 u.s. open on tv or streaming live online.

us-open-pinehurst-golf-ball-tee-g.png

The third major championship of the 2024 golf season has reached the final 18 holes with a pair of Americans having already claimed the first two majors of the year and a third in pole position to claim the next one. The USGA has loaded up its premier event with nearly all the best golfers in the world as 2024 U.S. Open contenders are taking on Pinehurst No. 2 for the first time in a decade, and it all comes to a head Sunday.

Follow the action Sunday with  live U.S. Open leaderboard coverage  right here on CBS Sports, and check out the  updating leaderboard for scores, statistics and more.

It is 2020 national champion Bryson DeChambeau out in front holding a three-shot lead after 54 holes. A second-place finisher at last month's PGA Championship who posted a T6 at the Masters to open the major season, DeChambeau is looking to capitalize on his immense play with the second major trophy of his career.

Closest to DeChambeau on the leaderboard are Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and Mattieu Pavon, all sitting at 4 under. McIlroy is seeking to end a decade-long major drought, while both Cantlay and Pavon are aiming to break through with their first major championships.

Scottie Scheffler entered as the U.S. Open favorite having already won the Masters and Players Championship this season (and he may well have taken the PGA, too, if not for a series of unfortunate events). Instead of contending at Pinehurst, though, he barely made the cut and began reassessing his game  after 36 holes of the U.S. Open. It was a similar but worse story for Tiger Woods , who lamented missing the cut believing that he played better than his score indicated over the first two days of the tournament.

On the line are not only the U.S. Open Championship Trophy and the third major title of the year but a record  $4.3 million winner's share as part of the U.S. Open's record $21.5 million purse . In other words, all the pressure is on across the final 18 holes.

While attending the U.S. Open can be a ton of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game's grandest stage is an incredible treat each year. We here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the U.S. Open all week long.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much U.S. Open as possible on Sunday.

US Open cut line 2024: List of players who will miss cut at Pinehurst

live tour players at masters

Making the weekend at a major golf championship is always a big deal. That is an even bigger accomplishment at the U.S. Open .

The national championship, being held this week at Pinehurst No. 2, usually has the second-smallest finishing field of the four men's majors. The Masters takes top 50 players and ties; the U.S. Open moves on the top 60 players and ties.

It meant a lot of jostling in the center of the field Friday, where a stroke or two here or there decided the fates of more than a dozen players, including arguably the two biggest names in the field.

TIGER ROUND 2: Follow here for his scorecard, results from second round

CHECKING ON LIV: Which LIV players made the cut for the weekend?

MONEY MEN: What to know about prize money at Pinehurst No. 2

What was the US Open cut line?

At the end of Thursday's first round, 64 players were at 2 over or better, and by the end of the day Friday, the cut was made at 5 over. In all, 74 players advanced, with 18 of them at 5 over – including Francesco Molinari, whose ace on his final hole, the par-3 ninth, put him at exactly 5-over 145..

The biggest name on the cut line was World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. This year's Masters Tournament champion struggled mightily on Friday with his putter, and a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 5th hole was part of a 74 that left him at 5-over 145 for the tournament.

He needed several players to struggle down the stretch, and that played out. Scheffler has not missed a cut since the 2022 St. Jude Championship, nearly two years ago.

Did Tiger Woods make the US Open cut?

Tiger Woods needed a huge finish to make the cut at the U.S. Open for the first time since 2019.

However, several close missed putts on the back nine left him at 7 over, and he finished two shots outside the cutline.

How many players make the US Open cut?

At the U.S. Open, the top 60 players and ties advance to play the final two rounds of the tournament.

There is no longer a rule mandating that players within 10 shots of the lead still qualify for the weekend. That rule ended after the 2011 tournament.

Who will miss the US Open cut?

Here's some of the biggest names who will have to pack their bags after Friday.

Viktor Hovland +6 (78-68)

Hovland attempted to make a charge on Friday, throwing six birdies on his card in the second round. But a double bogey on the ninth and bogeys on 16 and 17 left him one shot short. At No. 5 in the world ranking, he'll be the highest-ranked player to not make the cut.

Max Homa +6 (71-75)

The No. 10 player in the world never got his irons untracked (-3.75 strokes gained on approaches) and made six bogeys on Friday.

Tiger Woods +7 (74-73)

Woods certainly gave this a go, but his putter couldn't convert on multiple occasions in his final dozen holes, including a brutal lip-out on No. 15 for birdie.

Rickie Fowler +8 (71-77)

Fowler was 1 under for the tournament through 10 holes on Thursday, then never made another birdie. His day started with a bogey on the par-5 10th, and his gambles down the stretch didn't pay off either, with bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8 to guarantee he'd miss the weekend.

Dustin Johnson +9 (74-75)

The former U.S. Open champion played his way out of things quickly on Friday with four bogeys and a double in his first nine holes on Friday. He made three birdies on the back nine, but it was far too late.

Gary Woodland +9 (72-77)

Woodland was in line to stick around for the final two rounds, but the back nine Friday was a disaster. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 were compounded by consecutive double bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 to send the former U.S. Open champion home surprisingly early.

Justin Thomas +11 (77-74)

The two-time PGA Championship winner couldn't get anything started all week. Nine bogeys on Thursday were enough alone to sink him, and three more on his first eight holes on Friday finished it off.

Lucas Glover +13 (74-79)

Right on the cutline to start Friday, Glover opened with a birdie Friday on No. 1 before the wheels fell off. He bogeyed five of his next six holes, and a double bogey on the par-5 10th hole sealed his fate.

Phil Mickelson +15 (79-76)

Mickelson, who nearly won the first U.S. Open played at Pinehurst, had a nightmare week in his return to North Carolina. He made no birdies for the two rounds, and started Thursday with four consecutive bogeys.

How 8 remaining LIV golfers finished at the 2024 Masters; Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith and Bryson DeChambeau claim the top spot among LIV golfers at the 2024 Masters as each finished 2-under par and tied for sixth.

The pair and Tyrrell Hatton were the only three of LIV Golf's 13 members at Augusta to make it inside the top 10. PGA Tour players led the way with the top five of Scottie Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa and Tommy Fleetwood.

Smith, DeChambeau and Hatton qualified for the 2025 tournament due to their top-12 finishes, while Patrick Reed, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia and Charl Schwartzel will be invited back as former Masters champions.

Here is a look at how each of the 8 LIV golfers who made the weekend finished in the 2024 Masters.

How LIV golf members stand in the Masters 2024 final round

Bryson dechambeau | 2-under, t6 (1-over 73 on sunday).

DeChambeau claimed his first top-10 finish at Augusta and qualified for the 2025 Masters. He made some noise early on Sunday with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5, but then had a string of 11 straight pars before a bogey at 17.

Cameron Smith | 2-under, T6 (1-under 71 on Sunday)

Smith has his fifth top-10 at the Masters in eight tries after carding a 71 on Sunday to finish at 2 under. He wasn't necessarily in the mix to win, but it's another solid performance for the 30-year-old Australian.

Tyrrell Hatton | Even par, T9 (3-under 69 on Sunday)

Hatton was on fire on Sunday until a pair of bogeys to close out his tournament. He still carded a 69 for the final round and and shot up 10 positions on the leaderboard. It was his second best of 28 rounds at Augusta National and only his second time shooting in the 60s (68 in final round of 2021).

Patrick Reed | 1-over, T12 (Even par 72 on Sunday)

Reed bogeyed his final hole to fire an even par for the day and 1-over for the tournament.

Joaquin Niemann | 4-over, T22 (1-over 73 on Sunday)

Four bogeys and three birdies were on the card for Niemann's final round as the special invitee finished at 4-over par.

Phil Mickelson | 8-over, T43 (2-over 74 on Sunday)

The 3-time champion shot a 3-over in his final round on Sunday for back-to-back 74s over the weekend. Mickelson finished with rounds of 73-75-74-74—296.

Brooks Koepka | 9-over, T45 (3-over on Sunday)

Four bogeys on the second nine Sunday brought down Koepka to a tie for 45th at 8-over par. The defending PGA Champion had four birdies and three bogeys on the first nine Sunday, but all-in-all a disappointing Masters for Koepka.

Jon Rahm | 9-over, T45 (4-over on Sunday)

A tough final round for the defending champ, who recorded three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys on Sunday as he tallied a 4-over par round and a tie for 49th.

PINEHURST, N.C. – Neal Shipley is now the second player in the last quarter-century to earn low amateur honors at the same year’s Masters and U.S. Open, joining Viktor Hovland in 2019. He did so in his final week as an amateur, and after calling a two-stroke penalty on himself in Saturday’s third round, where the ball moved after he set his club behind the ball.

All’s well that ends well for Shipley, who played three years at James Madison before two seasons at Ohio State. He carded rounds of 70-73-71-72 at Pinehurst No. 2 for a 6-over total, clipping his Sunday playing partner Luke Clanton (a rising Florida State junior) by two strokes for low amateur honors. Clanton had a 5-footer for birdie at No. 18 to match Shipley, but it slid 4 feet past and he missed the comebacker.

In his final week as an amateur, Shipley lived a kid’s dream at Pinehurst. Now he’ll celebrate with his family (who cheered throughout his post-round press conference Sunday), pack up and head to western Canada for his debut on PGA TOUR Americas next week.

“It’s really an honor to win the low amateur here, and especially at Pinehurst,” Shipley said afterward. “It’s a really special place, and just really excited about being in the ceremony later today. It’s been wild; it’s something that maybe three, four years ago I didn’t think was possible, and to accomplish all this has just been phenomenal. Just the stuff of dreams really, as an amateur, to do everything I’ve done. I think I’ve checked all the boxes now.”

Shipley’s arc should inspire amateur golfers across the globe. He qualified for this year’s Masters and U.S. Open with a runner-up at the 2023 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills (Colorado), falling to Nick Dunlap in the final match. The Pittsburgh-area native wasn’t a highly sought-after junior recruit and took a few years to hit his stride in college. He finished No. 48 on the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking, well outside the top 25 to earn status on a TOUR-sanctioned circuit. He displayed grit by qualifying for PGA TOUR Americas via Q-School just one week before the U.S. Open, surviving a 9-for-1 playoff at the California site.

Between there and Pinehurst, he stopped at a friend’s wedding in Dallas.

“Been kind of going around the country and a lot of long flights,” Shipley said, “but lucky that I’m young and can handle all that still.”

Others to finish as low amateur at both the Masters and U.S. Open since 1990 include Phil Mickelson (1991) and Matt Kuchar (1998); the list also includes Jack Nicklaus and Ken Venturi among others. It’s a more and more impressive feat in the game’s modern era, as advanced instruction and equipment makes it harder for players to separate.

The Shipley-Clanton Sunday pairing marked just the second time in the last 40 years (Rickie Fowler and Derek Fathauer, 2008 at Torrey Pines) that two amateurs were paired on a U.S. Open Sunday. Seven years later, Fowler and Fathauer met again in the final group on a Sunday, at the 2015 PLAYERS, where Fowler notched a dramatic victory. Perhaps a few years down the road, Shipley and Clanton will meet again on the game’s biggest stage as well.
