Dodge's Description Of The Dodge Journey's Four-Speed Automatic Is So Sad

The Dodge Journey is the last of the crappy DaimlerChrysler-era cars in Fiat Chrysler’s lineup. It’s a vehicle that sells based on one fact: It seats seven and costs about as much as a pack of Juicy Fruit. And while I could tell you all about why history won’t look kindly upon the cheap SUV, I don’t need to make fun of the Journey today. Dodge has taken care of that on its website .

Here’s what Dodge has up. Prepare to slowly shake your head:

Yes, the base Dodge Journey comes with a four-speed automatic transmission. It’s something you might expect to see in a 1988 Dodge, but certainly not in a car built in 2018, when lots of cars come with eight , nine or 10-speed autos.

It’s such outdated tech that it appears Dodge can’t find absolutely anything positive to say about the gearbox, instead simply providing the definition of an automatic transmission in the description for the four-speed auto, writing:

The four-speed automatic transmission automatically changes gears so you don’t have to shift gears manually.

Truly an incredible contraption.

The reason why this is so sad is that automakers are notorious for finding something positive to say about their products. I mean, even the V6 Dodge Journey , which comes with an also-not-particularly-modern six-speed automatic has a more fluffy description, with Dodge writing:

The six-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick is equipped with a very low first gear, designed to enhance takeoffs from a stopped position.

I’ll admit that there’s something honest about Dodge just straight up saying “Hey, it changes gears for you. That’s about it,” but boy, just the thought of a bunch of marketing folks sitting around a table trying to think of something, anything positive to put in the four-speed auto’s description is both funny and sad.

You know what else is sad? This:

The description of the Journey’s 2.4-liter engine says the fuel economy numbers apply to the rear-wheel drive model. But the Dodge Journey comes only in front-drive or all-wheel drive. Not rear-wheel drive.

We once wrote an article titled “ Did You Know Dodge Still Makes The Journey? ” because we were amazed that the vehicle—as technologically antiquated as it was—still remained on the market after all those years. That was in 2015. Three years later, we wrote two more articles about the Journey’s long teeth.

But the Journey continues to trudge on, offering dirt-cheap transportation for seven, even shifting gears all on its own.

Dodge Journey Transmission: Overview, Problems, Fluids

The Dodge Journey is a car we’ve covered extensively on this blog. It’s been around for more than a decade and therefore is a vehicle you’ll see on the road every day. Today we’re going to talk about the transmissions this car has used between 2009 – 2020. Let’s start with a quick answer:

The Dodge Journey was initially equipped with the A604 (41TE) transmission – the late model 2008+ Dodge Journey was fitted with the 6-speed 62TE transmission. Models also have a 4-speed Ultradrive 40TES automatic, 5-speed Magna, T355 manual, 6-speed Aisin BG6/Fiat C635 manual, Getrag Mps6 DCT automatic, and Ultradrive 62TE automatic transmissions.

However, that doesn’t tell you the whole story. Below we’ll first talk about how long these transmissions last. Furthermore, we’ll talk about the cost of each unit at retail and the price for a remanufactured unit (if applicable). Finally, we discuss all the common problems of each unit, and we finish by giving recommendations for the proper transmission fluid. Read on!

How Long Does a Dodge Journey Transmission Last?

The 40TES, Magna T355, Aisin BG6, and Fiat C635 are solid transmissions that should last between 180.000 – 250.000 miles depending on the use of the car. Transmissions like the A604/41TE, Ultradrive 62TE, and Getrag Mps6 DCT will have a lifespan of 150.000 – 200.000 miles. However, some of these units can fail prematurely, which usually happens between 50.000 – 100.000 miles.

How Much Does a Dodge Journey Transmission Cost?

  • 4-speed Ultradrive 40TES automatic costs $1.600 remanufactured and $2.800 at retail.
  • 5-speed Magna T355 manual costs $2.300 remanufactured and $3.000 at retail.
  • 6-speed Aisin BG6 manual costs $2.000 – $2.500 at retail.
  • 6-speed Fiat C635 manual costs $2.000 – $2.500 at retail.
  • 6-speed Getrag Mps6 DCT automatic costs $2.000 – $2.500 at retail.
  • 6-speed Ultradrive 62TE automatic costs $2.400 remanufactured and $3.500 at retail.
  • A604 (41TE) Transmission costs $1.600 remanufactured and $2.800 at retail.

Common Dodge Journey Transmission Problems

4-speed ultradrive 41te automatic.

The A604 (later renamed the 41TE) is one of the most problematic transmissions Chrysler has ever put into a car. The transmission is plagued by electrical issues that cause poor shifting overall and numerous other complaints. Problems with this unit include:

  • Poor shifting quality with no codes stored in the transmission control module (TCM), no communication from the TCM or codes 11 – 17, 19, 20 and 45.
  • Poor shifting quality due to faulty TCM. The TCM has inputs codes that refer to elements such as TSS, OSS, pressure switches, gear select, crank sensor, TPS and temperature sensor. Bad grounds, connections, alternator diodes and EMI can affect speed sensors. If the clutches are good and there are no external problems, the TCM may be bad. A pressure switch trouble code may be caused by valve body crossleaks. Common examples are 2–4 or L/R pressure switch codes, which can indicate a bad solenoid pack, a sticky solenoid switch valve, or a warped valve body.
  • Solenoid circuit errors. Solenoid circuit codes 41–44 can be difficult to fix. This is partly because the TCM goes into limp mode by turning the ETAX relay off. Since the solenoid circuits are off, testing is limited and inconclusive.
  • Gear ratio problems. The TCM detects gear ratio errors by calculating signals from the input and output speed sensors. Make sure both sensors are working. If they are working, the clutches are slipping, a hub or shell maybe stripped or the solenoid pack is bad.

4-speed Ultradrive 40TES automatic

The 4-speed Ultradrive 40TES is the upgraded replacement of the 41TE mentioned above. The 40TES was introduced in 2007 and has been with the Dodge Journey throughout its lifespan. A pressure sensor and line pressure solenoid were added to the valve body, in addition to the solenoid pack that bolts to the outside of the case. The TES doesn’t have the same electrical problems its predecessor had.

5-speed Magna T355 manual

The 5-speed Magna T355 manual is a solid transmission overall. However, there are reports of units becoming challenging to shift while also making a whining noise. Continuing to drive with this problem can cause significant issues and some owners have had to replace their transmission completely. This problem is fixed by replacing the third, fourth, fifth, and reverse gear synchronizer rings as a set.

6-speed Aisin BG6 manual

The 6-speed Aisin BG6 manual is a solid transmission overall. However, Aisin does mention some common problems in the 2009 manual of this transmission related explicitly to the use of the manual in the Journey.

  • Hard shifting caused by a misadjusted crossover cable. Other causes include: – If there’s gear clash then the synchronizer clutch and stop rings or gear teeth may be worn or damaged. – Misassembled synchronizer components also cause shifting problems. – Incorrectly installed synchronizer sleeves, struts, or springs can cause shift problems. – Worn, damaged, misassembled or leaking hydraulic clutch release system/components can also cause difficult shifting or gear clash.
  • Noisy operation caused by chipped, broken gear or synchronizer teeth, and brinnelled, spalled bearings all cause noise
  • Slips out of gear caused by misaligned or damaged shift components, or worn teeth on the drive gears or synchronizer components.
  • Clutch problems worn, damaged, or misaligned clutch components can cause difficult shifting, gear clash, and noise. A worn or damaged clutch disc, pressure plate, or a faulty slave cylinder can cause hard shifting and gear clash.

6-speed Fiat C635 manual

The 6-speed Fiat C635 manual transmission has very few recorded problems and therefore is a reliable transmission. If problems occur, it’s usually the following issue.

  • Whining noise and hard shifting because of premature clutch failure caused by overshimming of the main gear shaft inside the gearbox.

6-speed Getrag Mps6 DCT automatic

Two central problems can be identified with this unit:

  • Clutch wear/failure
  • Mechatronic unit failure

The following causes mainly cause these problems:

  • Clutch wear is caused by general wear and tear but can also be cause by contamination of the oil or faulry mechatronic operation. This requires a complete replacement of the clutch. Also read: What’s The Oil Type, Capacity & Weight Of A Dodge Journey?
  • Mechatronic unit failure is most likely caused by clutch pack failure which releases metal debris in the unit. Both the unit as well as the clutch pack need to be replaced.

6-speed Ultradrive 62TE automatic

The 62TE transmission is an average transmission in terms of quality. It’s not riddled with problems, but it certainly has its flaws mainly caused by improper design. Below we’ve described the symptoms you should look out for, together with what is most likely causing it and how to fix it.

  • High pitched whining noise
  • Poor shift quality
  • Premature wear of the valve body
  • Engine stalls
  • Transmission shifts into neutral instead of 1-2

Of course, each of these problems has its causes and fixes. We’ve outlined these for you below.

  • The high pitched whining noise and/or the poor shift quality can be caused by a faulty bearing in the torque converter that sheds metal into the transmission filter causing it to plug off. Partial disassembly of the transmission and replacement of the bearing and torque converter is needed.
  • The premature wear of he valve body of the 62TE transmission is a design flaw that causes shift quality to deteriorate quickly once the 125.000 miles mark is reached. Changing the valve body is needed.
  • Engine stalls normally occur when the transmission is put into Drive. Mechanical failure of the electronically modulated converter clutch variable force solenoid / EMCC VFS solenoid, which can cause the torque converter clutch to engage when it shouldn’t, is normally the cause. To fix the problem, the EMCC solenoid will need to be replaced.
  • In Chrysler 200’s that are older than 2007 drivers may notice that the transmission shifts into neutral instead of from 1 to 2. Worn sealing rings that land on the low clutch housing is normally what you should look out for. Replace the housing of the piston and, maybe, also the one from the direct clutch to fix the issue.

Transmission Fluids and the Dodge Journey

Transmission fluid is as vital for car transmissions as anything else. Without proper care of fluid, you might end up with an impaired car. You could know the condition of car fluid by its color. If it has turned into a black liquid, get it changed as quickly as possible. The Dodge Journey’s Owner’s Manual suggests changing the fluid and filter after 120,000 miles. One might go a little more miles with the same oil if they adopt precautions.

  • 41TE/40TES/A604 is compatible with ATF +3 (type 7176)
  • Magna T355 is compatible with ATF+4 (MS-9602)
  • Aisin BG6 is compatible with ATF +4
  • Fiat C635 is compatible with Mopar C Series manual and dry clutch transmission fluid .
  • Getrag Mps6 is compatible with fully synthetic B0-DC
  • 62TE is compatible with ATF +4 fluid (type 9606)

Kurt Niebuhr

  • Extra versatility provided by a standard three-row seat
  • Low price for the segment
  • Lacks many modern safety and convenience features even in top trims
  • Below-average fuel economy
  • Disappointing and outdated base engine and transmission
  • Lags competitors in handling and drivability

What's new

  • Base trim renamed to SE Value
  • GT trim and V6 engine dropped
  • Part of the first Journey generation introduced in 2009

For 2020, the Dodge Journey is sent once more unto the breach in an attempt to woo you over with its low price and ... well, not much else. This small seven-seat SUV was once available in a multitude of trim levels and offered a strong optional V6 engine and available all-wheel drive. Now Dodge has stripped the Journey down and simplified it to only two trim levels and one available engine and transmission. It also can only be had in front-wheel drive.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Dodge Journey SE Value 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.42 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Briefly ahead of its time, the Journey has been largely forgotten by Dodge and left with a low-budget interior, an underpowered engine and subpar driving dynamics. Even its low starting price isn't enough to make much of a case for the Journey since most of its main competitors can be had for similar money.

In its class, the Kia Sorento leads the way with more space, an abundance of features and an excellent warranty, with the stylish Volkswagen Tiguan coming in second thanks to its safety features and user-friendly tech interface. The recently rehabilitated Mitsubishi Outlander is a more distant third but is still a considerably better option than the Journey.

Fuel economy, which journey does edmunds recommend, 2020 dodge journey models.

All Journeys are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (173 horsepower, 166 lb-ft) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive has been available in the past, but all 2020 Journeys are front-wheel-drive.

Selecting the SE Value trim delivers a bare-bones experience, with manually adjustable cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, and a basic six-speaker audio system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Available to the SE Value trim exclusively are the Blacktop Package , which adds black exterior accents and black aluminum wheels, and the SE Value Popular Equipment Group , which includes a power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio and three-zone climate control.

The Crossroad upgrades the seating surfaces to leather and brings a power-adjustable driver's seat. It also adds a sunroof and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dresses up the exterior with body-colored mirrors and 19-inch alloy wheels. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group includes navigation, a more powerful audio system, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

I thought I kept my window sticker but guess not. I want to change my trans fluid but cannot find a site  / link to give my transmission speed based on my vin #, but I bought a 6 speed tranny filter kit. Can anyone help me with this  ? thanks

not to be rude but if you dont know if you  have a 4 or 6 speed transmission just let the local garage or dealership do it, also check out you tube videos they have on how to do it and all the ways to check the fluid level

  • larryl and Summer Solstice

Trying to count the shifts but wanted to verify 100 %, and want to change the fluid myself as it is not a difficult job just takes a little time. I thought there was a link on this site posted some time ago but a search did not result in one. The ones I did check did not offer that specific info when I input my vin # , just thought I would ask here before asking a dealer. There will be a time when I will not be able to do some of this type work myself or we simply cannot anymore but, not there yet. Thanks, will see if utube can show how to tell tranny speed you have.

From a article I just found, the SXT , Crew and R/T trim packages indicate as having a 6 speed transmission the SE in noted as being a 4 cylinder 4 speed base model.

fyi all 4 cyl come with the 4 spd....and  all 6 cyl comes with the 6 spd,,,,

the biggest difference  in trans service now days is the hook it up to a computer and going by the trans temp and other things determine how much fluid you will put in the dealership does have a tool you can buy about $25 from what iv heard and you can use your oil dipstick if you watch the you tube videos on how to measure and mark it to pre check where your fluid level is ...this would stop you from having to buy the dealership tool. i marked my oil stick with a small file just so i could keep an eye on the trans level, good luck and also use the proper atf fluid

Great idea, thanks I will do just that

Love my Journey

Bought my 2012 journey slightly used in 2013 and have had only one thing crap out on it. The Bluetooth. That’s it! Nothing else, just the Bluetooth. This has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned! My husband makes sure all the maintenance is done when recommended by dodge. 122,000 miles in and she is still perfect!

Cannot beat the value

I had owned a 2010 Journey a few years ago when they came out. It was a very finicky car but was always reliable and never let me down. I had moved on to much higher end vehicles from Toyota and even had a Volvo. Just this past year everything changed and I essentially had to start over. A dealer that specialized helping people in my situation put me in a 2012 Journey. I'm very happy with it! Every complaint I had on the 2010 is not on the 2012. The 3.6 in the 12 is so much better matched to the Journey then the 3.5 ever was. It has way more power and gets about 25 mpg or 5 more then the 2010. The Journey is actually more comfortable then the Volvo it replaced! In terms of money, you cannot beat the Journey value. Both of my Journey have been reliable, I wouldn't think twice about taking it anywhere and it has 130000 miles. It is ten years old and has aged very well. Every feature works, air is ice cold, sound system is great, and the 3.6 is still silent. The 62te transmission does occasionally "stumble" when shifting but I've had four other Chrysler with 62te and they all did it as well.

Your Comprehensive Guide for the 62TE Transmission

The 62TE six-speed automatic was launched in 2007 with the 3.5 liter V6 on the Sebring and Avenger, and with the 4.0 liter Pacifica. It then rolled into minivans including the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country. With some case modifications from 2010 to 2011 updates were completed to help with the durability of the 62TE platform. This transmission is now used in the Ram Promasters cargo vans and rated for a higher payload.

Here is some information to help you get to know the 62TE Transmission better.

Checking the Transmission Fluid

Checking the fluid level of 62TE

The 62TE does not come with a dipstick, but one can still check the fluid level by taking the cap off the dipstick tube; the cap can be re-used or a replacement cap can be purchase. We suggest using a length of the flexible speedometer cable while listening for a light "thunk" as it hits the pan pottem. There is also a tool for finding the fluid level which can be purchased at the dealer or most parts stores.

The 62TE transmission requires Chrysler made ATF+4 synthetic type 9602 fluid for proper operation of the internal components. Problems have been known to arise in the transmission when too much, too little, or wrong transmission fluid are used. Therefore, Chrysler advises to take the vehicle to the dealership when transmission maintenance is due.

About the Automatic Transaxle

The 62TE six-speed automatic transaxle was based on Chrysler’s existing four speed automatic with two new primary gear ratios and a secondary ratio for passing at highway speeds. The first gear ratio was much lower, to increase standing-start acceleration; and the differential was beefed up to handle more power.

The two extra gear ratios were added by replacing the transfer shaft with a compounder.

Smaller steps between ratios helped smooth shifting, as the engine speed doesn't change as greatly with each shift, while the wider range allowed both quicker acceleration and better mileage at highway speeds.

The 62TE's second gear was a considerable distance from first, and all other gears were fairly close together. The fifth gear was a 1:1 ratio; the overdrive gear was similar to the four speed.

Common Issues with the 62TE

Slipping, Erratic Shifting, Harsh Forward or Reverse Gear Engagement: Some of the most common 62TE transmission problems are slipping between gears, erratic up or down shifts, or a hard slam when the 62TE transmission engages Drive or Reverse. Design flaws account for numerous problems in the transmission. Any one of these could be causing the symptoms.

Engine stalls while in drive or during coast down - 62TE transmission

Problem: Drivers may notice an engine stall when they place the gear selector into drive. They may also notice the engines starts to run excessively rough or stalls when they are coasting to a stop.

Solution: These 62TE transmission problems may be caused by mechanical failure with the electronically modulated converter clutch variable force solenoid / EMCC VFS solenoid, which can cause the torque converter clutch to engage when it shouldn't. To fix the problem, the EMCC solenoid will need to be replaced. This accounts for the most common cause of failure in this transmissions is a malfunctioning torque converter. Torque converters that are not functioning properly can cause shifting problems.

Other Issues that may not be related to the 62TE

Sometimes not all issues are related to the transmission itself and instead can be found in the command side including wiring, Modules, and input sensors as found in this article  Even Common Conditions are Sometimes Wrong .

How long did it take to get from Moscow to St. Petersburg throughout the centuries? (INFOGRAPHICS)

dodge journey 4 speed transmission

Russian Railways recently announced a new speed train railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg will be launched by late 2027. The journey is expected to take just 2.5 hours in total (with an estimated 2 hours 15 minutes ride time without stops). As of today, the project is going to break a record in terms of the duration of a journey between the two capitals. So, how long did it take to travel from “the northern capital” to Moscow (and vice versa) in the different epochs?

In 1703, Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg and transferred the Russian capital there. The city began to develop, with its population swiftly growing, but a great many noble families continued on living in Moscow. Additionally, the main orthodox cathedrals, where tsars were crowned and buried , remained there. So, Peter the Great would make the journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow and back by horse carriage, making it the most frequently used route for centuries.

In the 18th century, the journey took on average four and half to six or more days . To a great extent, it depended on weather conditions; for instance, it took the least amount of time to glide on winter ice and snow. Empress Elizabeth of Russia held the record in the 18th century for the shortest journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow.

Elizabeth's sledge

Elizabeth's sledge

In 1742, it took her and her entourage merely three days to reach her coronation place in a sledge. They rode quite a few horses to death at that time, traveling only during the day and resting at night.

One could reach the destination fast enough with a troika , pulled by three horses, as they developed a speed of 45-50 km/h. However, not everyone could afford such a ride, most often going for a pair of horses or just one.

During the off-season, in spring and fall, the road was covered with impassable mud and it cost more and took longer to travel along it. “ No less than six days did I wend my way along a filthy road, arriving in St. Petersburg half dead,” Alexander Pushkin wrote in his sketch ‘The Journey from Moscow to Petersburg’. All in all, the poet traveled between the cities over 20 times: in a tilt cart or by changing horses (a sort of “horse sharing”, when one would change horses at post stations) or in his own comfortable carriage.

In 1820, the first “public transport” emerged, namely stagecoaches, which could carry 4-12 passengers and ran between the cities according to a schedule. The journey in a stagecoach took about 4.5 days .

Back in 1834, the first “even highway” between the cities was built: part of the road was paved with stone, while the rest was covered with pebble stone. Pushkin made up his mind to test it and reached the destination - in merely four days!

The first railway

The mid-19th century saw a real technical breakthrough. In 1842, Nicholas I signed an order to build a railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Years earlier, the first railroad in Russia had been built, connecting St. Petersburg with its suburb, Tsarskoye Selo. Regular trains started running between St. Petersburg and Moscow in 1851, with the journey taking 21 hours 45 minutes . After Nicholas I’s death, the railroad adopted his name - Nikolaevskaya - and, in Soviet times, it was renamed Oktyabrskaya, as we know it today.

The railroad in Tver, early 20th century

The railroad in Tver, early 20th century

It became incredibly trendy to travel between the cities by train. It’s not by chance that, in the 1870s, Leo Tolstoy wrote his novel ‘Anna Karenina’, where the railway was a significant part of the narration .

In the USSR, the importance of railways was fully acknowledged, with focus put on reducing the time of a journey. In the 1920s, passenger trains between the two capitals traveled for 15 hours on average. Back in 1920, an experimental electric train managed to cover the distance in just 12 hours . In 1931, the first Soviet express train was launched, reaching the destination in a record-breaking ten hours . In the 1960s, the focus shifted from locomotives to the electric haulage, which made it possible for an electric train to accelerate to 130 km/h instead of the average 70.

In 1984, the speedy ER200 electric train covered the distance from Leningrad to Moscow in five hours 20 minutes and, later, in as little as four hours 59 minutes . It could reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. However, there were only two such trains, which ran three times a week and cost a lot to maintain and, thus, were not mass-produced. Soviet people preferred regular passenger trains to them. In 2009, the ER200 ran for the last time, giving way to the high-speed ‘Sapsan’ train.

What’s there nowadays?

Sapsan high-speed express trains

These days, a plane covers the distance between Moscow and St. Petersburg in merely 1.5 hours . Yet, taking into account the journey to the airport and then from it in the city of destination, as well as the fact one has to arrive at the airport in advance, many prefer to travel by rail. A good thing is that there always are a plethora of options to choose from: over 30 trains run between the cities daily.

Journey time on express trains is seven to 10 hours , with the length mostly depending on the number of stops. The eight-hour journey was immortalized in a popular 1995 song by Maxim Leonidov  - ‘From Petersburg to Moscow’, featuring the following lines: “Just eight hours without sleep/from Petersburg to Moscow”.

Journey time on the Soviet ‘Red Arrow’ train also roughly takes eight hours . There are also a number of different express trains: For instance, the journey on the Nevsky Express takes four hours and four minutes . The fast Lastochka electric train covers the distance in 5.5-6.5 hours , whereas the journey on the fastest train - the ‘Sapsan’ takes only three hours 50 minutes .

For many years, apart from the railway, the old tsar road was used for traveling on horses and then, in cars. In 1958, asphalt was added, with the road becoming known as highway M10. It is typically possible to cover the distance of 684 kilometers in ten hours . Most of the road goes through villages and towns, where a speed limit of 40-60 km/h applies.

In 2019, the express M11 ‘Neva’ toll highway was unveiled. The journey takes around five hours , with most parts having a 130 km/h speed limit. A small section of the highway in the vicinity of Tver is still being built, which forces the route to travel through residential areas.
