This is where the paella was invented

Just 10 km from the city. Nature in its purest form, magical sunsets, boat rides and the chance to disconnect like nowhere else. An urban oasis surrounded by paddy fields and woods: that is what L’Albufera Natural Park means to anyone who is familiar with it. You will definitely want to pay a visit if you’d like to discover the origins of Valencian cuisine. Because what better reason to come than the fact that paella was invented right here?

Head over to the town of El Palmar and try their traditional dishes.  Sample some all-i-pebre (eel stew flavoured with garlic and pepper) and marinated striped mullet . You’ll experience a new way of understanding food: enjoying it while also learning its origins. Take a walk along one of the six signposted routes through the nature reserve. Discover all the waterfowl and vegetation, live like an authentic local fisherman on Spain’s largest lagoon. You are sure to return.

HOW TO GET TO L'ALBUFERA

You can get to the park on  EMT city bus numbers 24 and 25. From the centre of Valencia, the number 24 will take you to El Palmar and the number 25 to El Perellonet, in less than an hour and for just €1.50 each way. Both buses are free with the  Valencia Tourist Card .

You can get off at the Embarcadero or El Palmar stops and enjoy a ride in a traditional boat on L’Albufera Lagoon.

Another way to get to the park is on the Albufera Bus Turístic . On this bus, you will enjoy a very complete visit to l'Albufera Natural Park, discovering the ecosystems of the rice fields. This visit also includes a boat trip.

The highlight: a boat ride .

A  boat ride  is the best way to see the bird life close up and relax in this fantastic natural environment. At dusk, the reddish golden hues of the sunset create a truly magical atmosphere.

There are docks at  Gola de Pujol  and in the ports in  Catarroja, Silla, Sollana and El Palmar . You will travel in a type of handcrafted boat known as an albuferenc, and the ride lasts around  40 minutes . You can also book outings that combine a boat ride with a tour of a traditional barraca (cottage), or an authentic paella, of course.

Albuferencs

Exploring the local ecosystems

The main attraction is the large freshwater lagoon spanning more than 2,800 hectares, the largest in Spain, to which the park owes its name: L’ Albufera . It provides shelter for up to  300 different species  of birds throughout the year, especially the waterfowl that winter there, including flamingos. In fact, L’Albufera has been designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, and since 1994, as a Special Protection Area (ZEPA).

If you're interested in ornithology, at the  Racó de l’Olla Interpretation Centre , you can learn more about the park's bird life and do some birdwatching from its observatories and the observation tower, which offers a panoramic view.   You can get to this nature classroom on EMT lines 24 or 25, getting off at the Pinars - Carretera del Palmar stop.

The lagoon is surrounded by a landscape of marshes and paddy fields, which are completely transformed with each phase of the agricultural cycle: green in summer, blue in winter when water floods the fields, and brown when the ground is left bare. And on the strip that separates it from the sea, you will find a unique ecosystem: the  natural dunes and pine woods of La Devesa . Visit in summer to relax in the sun between the rugged vegetation and the sea, on wild beaches like  L’Arbre de Gos , Devesa , El Saler and La Garrofera .

Centro interpretación Raco Olla

Tancats , or artificial wetlands

At any of the docks, you can get a boat to Tancat de la Pipa , a biodiversity reserve inside the park that is open to visitors with advance reservations. It is made up of 40 hectares of paddy field that in 2007 were turned into a group of aquatic habitats thanks to dense vegetation that functions as a powerful filter, boosting the water quality. Additionally, the former La Pipa turbine house now serves as a small visitor centre with a spectacular view of the park from the viewpoint.

There are two other tancats , Mília and L'Illa , public access to which is highly restricted to protect the wildlife. If you want to visit them, send an email to [email protected] or [email protected].

Blasco Ibáñez, chronicler of L'Albufera

No one was better able to portray life in L'Albufera than Valencian author Vicente Blasco Ibáñez .

Some of his novels, including  The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse  and  Blood and Sand , were made into films starring such actors as Glenn Ford, Tyrone Power, Rita Hayworth and Rudolph Valentino.

Fishing in L’Albufera

During fishing season, October to April, the delightful fish market (Caudete, 13; El Palmar) offers local wild eel, as well as  sea bass , striped mullet and carp. Legally recognized by King Jaume I in 1250, the Fishermen’s Association is made up of 400 members, of which 100 are still active. There are 56 established fishing areas, which are assigned by drawing lots each season in what is known as the redolin draw. The name comes from the small wooden balls into which the fishermen insert a piece of paper with their name. These are then placed in the raffle drum. As each ball emerges, the fishermen choose their fishing spots. The last one to be picked will be the pesador for the fish market, responsible for weighing all the day's catches at the market, in exchange for a percentage of sales.

Pesca Albufera

Their catch is offered for direct sale year-round at the market: striped mullet, eel and blue crab, in season.

If you're planning on making a purchase, it is best to call the market (+34 961 620 347), ask what they have that day, place your order and then go pick it up. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8.00am–2.30pm, and Saturday until 1.00 pm.

Description Albufera Tour

Albufera is a wonderful escape from the bustling city of Valencia and a great place to soak up some beautiful landscapes and be one with nature. The natural park of the Albufera is home to an enormous freshwater lagoon which is surrounded by rice fields. It is situated in the south of Valencia and is easily reachable by bus, scooter or bike from the center. The trip itself offers some lovely views of the beaches, the rice fields and the lagoon.
Furthermore, there is an awesome bike route, and I can take you there on a bike or scooter tour. You will be rewarded with some incredible nature, dunes, wetlands, birds, fauna and the beaches of El Saler. The park’s lagoon makes a nice spot to watch birds and to take a ride in a typical Albufera boat. You can make a visit to a traditional house “barracas” in the picturesque town of El Palmar. This is also a great place to find good paella restaurants or you can make your own paella during a paella workshop. If you like nature, fresh open air and a peaceful atmosphere, this is definitely a tour for you!

Albufera Natural Park

Albufera experience, pickup time, pick up points, make it private, try the paella, nature just a step away from the city.

The Albufera Natural Park is a unique place, which you will only find in Valencia. An experience surrounded by nature that will make you understand the history of the Valencian Community. ✨

Its calm waters reflect the sky , rice fields spread like green blankets and biodiversity sings in chorus.. It is a place where life moves to the rhythm of the seasons, where migratory birds find refuge, and where sunsets are authentic works of art. This park is a visual poem, a symphony of nature and a treasure that deserves to be explored.

A dream tour…

– We will start the route in the dunes of ‘ el Saler’, to admire its virgin dunes and marvel at the native flora, as well as the views of its beach and the Mediterranean Sea.

– We will continue the excursion by vehicle to continue admiring this beautiful landscape until we reach the jewel of the park… The lake! Did you know that it is the largest lake in Spain? We will enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of it from the Puchol gola pier, while our guide explains the peculiarities of this Mediterranean ecosystem and its geographical and social importance throughout history.

– Our next stop will be el Palmar. This island of Albufera condenses the fishing essence that has characterized this area of Valencia since its beginnings. We can still see some barracks from the 18th century! We will admire several of these typical Valencian houses, which represent one of the symbols of the region for its traditional architecture.

Here we will take the boat for a walk that will leave us speechless: we will see the most beautiful sunset in Valencia. Ending an activity full of nature and calm.

Best places to visit in Albufera Natural Park

Map of the main points of interest in albufera, albufera natural park in popular culture, how to get to albufera natural park from valencia, the best time to visit albufera.

Area: 21,000 hectares Lake surface area: 2,800 hectares Year declared a national park: 1986 Best known for: The outstanding natural beauty of its landscape and for being the birthplace of paella

The Albufera Natural Park stretches from Pinedo in the north to Cullera in the south. The Mediterranean Sea flanks it to the east and a string of towns to the west.

At the heart of the park lies the Albufera Lake . The origins of this lake trace back more than 2.5 million years to the formation of a bay between the mouths of the Turia and Júcar rivers.

Over time, this bay was sealed off by the accumulation of sediment deposits, ultimately evolving into a freshwater lake. The lake continues to be connected to the sea through three channels.

During Roman times, Albufera Lake was ten times its current size. However, with the arrival of the Moors in the 8th century, significant portions of the lake were reclaimed for the cultivation of rice .

A man in a boat cruising one of Albufera's channels

These days, the lake is surrounded by rice fields. The rice varieties predominantly cultivated in this area are Bomba, Albufera, and Senia, all of which are of the short grain variety and have a Denomination of Origin (DO) status.

Albufera Natural Park is separated from the sea by wild dunes and the La Dehesa del Saler pine forest.

Along the coastline, there are several beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters. These beaches are a closely guarded secret and remain relatively shielded from mass tourism.

Albufera’s dream-like natural wonder is home to approximately 300 bird species and the birthplace of  paella . Its name comes from Arabic and means “small sea.”

Sunset over the rice fields in Albufera Natural Park

If you’re in Valencia for anything longer than 3 days, I highly recommend you include Albufera in your itinerary . While you won’t be able to see the entirety of this nature reserve in just a few hours, you’re almost guaranteed to have a great time.

If you’re constrained by time, the best option is to book an organized tour. Otherwise, start in either El Saler or El Palmar. These two villages are super accessible and close to Valencia, so they are often the first choice for most people.

In my experience, the rest of the Albufera Nature Reserve remains largely unexplored even as it hides some truly remarkable gems. Although I’ll mention some of them here, it’s important to keep in mind that these spots may be less developed or harder to reach than the more popular tourist areas.

Explore Albufera Lake by boat

Boats moored in the Catarroja harbour

One of the most popular things to do in Albufera is take a leisurely boat ride across the lake. Boat rides are great for discovering this picturesque landscape, seeing some of the few remaining barracas (19th-century reed and mud huts), and spotting different bird species.

The best time of the day to take a boat ride on the Albufera Lake is just before the sun sets. Boat ride prices start from €5 per person during the day and slightly more at sunset.

Boat tour starting points: The two most popular places are the village of El Palmar and Mirador del Pujol. You can also take a boat from Port de Catarroja, Port de Silla, and El Saler, but in this case, the boat navigates through a channel before reaching the lake and you have to book in advance.

Savour authentic paella in El Palmar

A pan of vegetarian paella

El Palmar is a traditional fishing village situated right at the heart of Albufera Natural Park. It is widely recognized as the birthplace of paella and therefore it’s super popular with tourists and locals alike.

The village has under a thousand inhabitants and I wouldn’t say it’s particularly pretty, but it’s the best place to eat paella in Valencia , so people flock here pretty much any day of the year. Booking a table in advance is highly recommended, but be aware that most of the restaurants are only open for lunch.

Where to eat paella in El Palmar: El Palmar has a couple of dozen restaurants, all specializing in paella and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Among my favorites are Arrocería El Rek (they have a large terrace with lake views) and Arrocería Maribel (listed in the Michelin guide).

Cycle through Albufera’s scenic trails

People biking on a bike lane in Albufera Natural Park

Albufera has some of the best cycling routes in Valencia , so if you enjoy biking, I highly recommend you rent a bike and explore it on two wheels. A continuous bike lane connects Valencia to Albufera Park, running alongside the beach and passing through the La Dehesa del Saler pine forest before reaching El Palmar.

From El Palmar, you can continue biking to Muntanyeta dels Sants, but this is a long ride that not many people venture on. After El Palmar, there are almost no paved roads among the rice fields, but the terrain is as flat as a paella pan and has a low difficulty level.

If you don’t want to exhaust yourself, an alternative is to take the cercanías train line C1 or C2 from the North Train Station to Catarroja, El Romaní, or Sueca and start exploring Albufera from there. You can take your bike aboard all cercanías short-distance trains free of charge.

Catch a breathtaking sunset

Sunset over the rice fields

For a truly magical end of the day, I recommend adding “watching the sunset in Albufera” to your list of things to do in Valencia . This is a great opportunity to take some amazing photos, enjoy a romantic evening, or simply be entranced by the sheer beauty of this park.

Whenever I visit, I always try to stay until sunset, as I believe this is when Valencia’s Albufera Park reveals its true beauty. It’s incredible how the landscape transforms and everywhere you look seems touched by magic. But I’m not the only one who thinks this. Albufera is renowned for being one of the  best places to watch a sunset in Valencia and many locals drive here just for that.

Best places to watch the sunset in Albufera: The most popular spot for watching the sunset over Albufera Lake is Mirador del Pujol, but this spot can get pretty crowded. So I usually prefer seeing the sunset from the lesser-known Port de Catarroja (sunset over a little harbor with cute boats), Muntanyeta dels Sants (sunset over the rice fields), and the Rice Museum in Cullera (also over the rice fields).

Embark on a bird-watching adventure

Bird flying over the rice fields in Albufera Natural Park

Albufera is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts, as there are hundreds of species living here, from seagulls and ducks to graceful flamingos.

The most common bird species that I’ve seen among the rice fields are the white egrets, black herons, and coots. Flamingos and other larger bird species are more elusive, but whenever they grace me with their presence, it always makes my day.

The best season for birdwatching in Albufera is spring, when you can witness the arrival of migratory birds. But if you’re not a hardcore birdwatcher, I think you’ll have a blast seeing Albufera’s avian residents regardless of the season.

Best places for bird watching in Albufera: Some of the best places for bird watching are Tancat de la Pipa, Tancat de Mília, and Tancat de l’Illa. As a general rule of thumb, your chances of seeing a variety of bird species increase as you get nearer to the lake and skyrocket if you take a boat ride.

Unwind on secluded beaches

Wooden path leading to the El Saler beach

A succession of beautiful sandy beaches separates the Albufera Natural Park from the sea. Some of them have Blue Flag status but they are notably less crowded compared to those in Valencia.

What makes these beaches extra special, in my opinion, is that they are bordered by wand dunes and even a picturesque pine forest spanning from El Saler to El Perellonet. The forest has several paved paths that you can follow both on foot and by bike.

Best beaches along Albufera: Among the most popular are Playa de Pinedo, Playa del Saler, and Playa de la Garrofera. It’s important to note, though, that some services, such as lifeguards, are only available during the swimming season, which lasts from June to September.

Discover Albufera’s rice fields

Sunset over the rice fields in Albufera Park near Valencia

Albufera’s rice fields can be explored on foot, by bike, or by car (ideally a 4×4). You can start from pretty much any town in or around the park and you’re almost guaranteed to find yourself surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Strolling through the rice fields is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Albufera. The rice fields are at their lushest from mid-June to mid-August, with July being the best month to visit.

September is the rice harvest season, so the rice changes color and doesn’t look that pretty anymore. But during the winter months, the magic of Albufera is back as the fields are flooded and form perfect water mirrors.

A mountain and rice fields in Cullera

Here are 5 places in Albufera, that for one reason or another, are truly worth a visit.

1. La Dehesa del Saler: A quiet pine tree forest that serves as a buffer between the sea and the lake. There are various routes you can take through the forest and all of them are paved.

2. El Palmar: A small fishing village situated at the southern end of Albufera Lake. The village is surrounded by rice fields and has risen to prominence for being the cradle of paella.

3. Port de Catarroja: A small port with dozens of fishing boats and a couple of restaurants specializing in all i pebre , a potato and eel dish traditional of Valencian cuisine .

4. Muntanyeta dels Sants: A small mountain rising seemingly out of nowhere amidst the rice fields. On top of the mountain, there is a small hermitage from where you can enjoy 360º panoramic views of an otherwise utterly flat landscape. Perhaps the most unexpected scenery inside Albufera Natural Park.

5. Rice Museum of Cullera: Situated on the outskirts of Cullera, this small museum inside a whitewashed hermitage is perched atop a mountain from where you can enjoy breathtaking sunsets over the rice fields. To visit the Rice Museum in Cullera, it’s best you contact them in advance as they don’t have a set schedule.

A white house among the flooded rice fields in Albufera Park

Albufera Natural Park was showcased in Vicente Blasco Ibáñez ‘s “ Cañas y barro ” (Reeds and Mud) novel that portrays the social conditions of the late 19th century in El Palmar and the nearby villages. This novel was made into a TV mini-series in 1978.

More recently, “ El Embarcadero ” is a contemporary thriller series (2019-2020) that unfolds partially in Albufera and partially in Valencia. It weaves an emotional and gripping tale of two women whose lives become intertwined following the loss of their husband.

I wholeheartedly recommend you watch this series if you haven’t already, not only for the unusual story but also for the whimsical landscape of Albufera that it showcases.

A water fountain on a terrace with panoramic views over the rice fields of Albufera

Albufera Natural Park has an area of over 21,000 hectares and is surrounded by several towns and villages from where you can start exploring. Here are some of the best ones.

  • El Saler: El Saler is situated 12 km from Valencia and can be reached by car or bus. During the summer months, an express bus service leaves from Puerta del Mar in Valencia and goes all the way to El Saler Beach.
  • El Palmar: El Palmar is 20 km from Valencia and you can get there by car or bus (bus #24 or #25 leaves from Puerta del Mar and the City of Arts and Sciences).
  • Port de Catarroja: Port de Catarroja is 12 km from Valencia and you can get there by car or by train. The harbour is a 40-minute walk from the train station and you have to go through an underpass that was not designed for pedestrians. So you might want to take a taxi or bring a bike.
  • El Romaní: El Romaní is 25 km from Valencia and while you can get there by car, the train station is right next to the rice fields. Bring your bike and explore Albufera towards Tancat de Mília.
  • Sueca: Sueca is 37 km from Valencia. You can get there by car or by train. From the train station, there’s a 20-minute walk to the rice fields and a 1-hour walk to Muntanyeta dels Sants. This is quite a lengthy walk, especially under the scorching summer sun, so I recommend biking instead of walking.
  • Cullera: Cullera is 45 km from Valencia. You can get there by car or by train. From the train station, there’s a 30-minute walk to the rice fields. Part of the walk is uphill and involves crossing a busy road with no pedestrian crossing.

People in peasant clothes harvesting rice by hand in Catarroja

The ideal time to visit Albufera is during the summer months, from mid-June to mid-August , when the rice fields are a stunning lush green hue. However, these are the hottest months of the year and the most challenging if you’re exploring Albufera on foot or by bike.

September is another intriguing month to visit Albufera as the rice harvesting season begins, and a series of festivals are organized in the surrounding villages.

One of my favorite festivals is the “ International Valencian Paella Cooking Contest” held in Sueca at the beginning of the month. This festival takes place in the town center and is a fantastic opportunity to taste a variety of paellas.

If you want to partake in an authentic rice harvest festival, you cannot miss the celebrations in Catarroja . These festivities are held in Port de Catarroja next to the rice fields. The festivities include all i pebre and paella tastings, and a demonstration of manual rice harvesting methods.

The winter months, from December to February , can also be a good time to explore the Albufera Park. The flooded rice fields create a perfect water mirror, and the landscape is incredibly pretty, especially at sunset. If you plan to stay in Albufera to watch the sunset, bring warm clothes as it can get quite chilly later in the day.

Boat trip + sunset

Live an unforgettable experience enjoying your boat ride with the sunset on the lake of l'Albufera, one of the most popular and beautiful in Spain. The departure is from our main piers and we offer the possibility of making it more special by adding a toast with a bottle of cava on board. Find out about the possibility of taking the walk with explanations in English. After a tour of approximately 60 minutes enjoying the landscape, watching all kinds of water birds and learning from the explanations of our guides, we arrive at the center of the lake on time, a few minutes before sunset, just enough time to prepare the cameras and start enjoying the sublime spectacle. The engine is turned off to stop the boat in silence on the calm waters of the lake and to experience the beauty of the sunset in all its fullness. The colorful dance begins, the sky begins to burn with shades of red and orange. Behind the mountains in the interior of the province of Valencia, the last ray of sunshine can be seen reflected in the peaceful waters of l'Albufera. Often, a boat with a mast incorporated between ours and the horizon is crossed, causing the natural and artificial retina to feed on that sensation of depth so longed for by photographers. We have several typical boats to make this guided tour through the waters of Lake l'Albufera and its channels between rice fields. Get some fresh air.

After a few days in the city, you may want to escape and get some fresh air!

The  Albufera Lake lies just south of Valencia, and is surrounded by rice fields. Together with the dunes and forest on the strip of land between the lake and the sea, it’s a protected nature reserve, where you can see many migratory birds.

Normally we first walk through the dune forest from the lake to the sea, while we tell you about the history of the lake and the rice. If there is enough time, we will pass by an information centre with a small alkaline lake and an observation tower; the best place to see flamingos!

From here it’s a short drive to the village of El Palmar, right at the lake, where we will walk through the paddies and take a boat to see the lake and birds. There’s always a breeze on the lake, so the boat trip is great when it’s hot.

albufera tour from valencia

The Albufera rice is grown especially for the paella, and at the lake you can find Valencia’s best paellas! So after the boat trip, there shouldn’t really be any discussion about what to have for lunch…

After lunch we’ll drive you back to Valencia, in time for your siesta.

From winding rivers to golden beaches, Valencia is a cyclist’s dream

V alencia, bathed in Mediterranean sun and crowned as the European Green Capital of 2024, beckons travellers with the promise of sustainable beauty.

The Green Capital title is not just an honour; it's an invitation to explore Valencia in an environmentally friendly way. The city’s extensive network of bike lanes allow visitors to navigate the city for free, starting from its dazzling historical core.

How to explore Valencia by bike

A journey through the city's green lungs will take you past the Turia River's green flow, through the historical centre, along the beach, into El Cabañal and finally to the serene embrace of La Albufera.

“Valencia is a spectacular city, it’s already in the league of the best capitals in the world to visit. We expect that in 2024 Valencia will continue to soar, reaching new heights,” says Núria Montes, the Councillor of Tourism of the Valencia Region.

The city's rapid transformation into an environmentally friendly destination defines the visitor's experience. In just a year, Valencia has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis, and every kilometre of bike lane serves as a witness to the city's commitment to sustainability.

Here’s what to see on your bike tour through Valencia.

  • Alpine retreats and winding streets: Why you should visit Europe’s most welcoming places in 2024
  • Fed up of flying with only 100ml liquids? Good news as European airports bring in high-tech scanners

Turia River's Green Flow: Urban Nature at Its Finest

“If I was to visit Valencia by bike I would for sure start by the Turia River Park, it's our Central Park”, suggests Nuria Montes.

The Turia River's Green Flow is a remarkable urban park born from the repurposed riverbed. With over 10 kilometres of dedicated bike lanes , this verdant oasis winds through the heart of the city, connecting parks, gardens, and recreational spaces.

Following the Turia River, you’ll reach the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, a modern science and cultural complex with breathtaking architecture . Its white futuristic buildings have become icons of the city.

Take a stroll through Valencia’s historic centre

Starting from the modernist North Station, one can stroll through one of the largest historical centres in Europe, crossing squares and pedestrianised streets full of monuments like Plaza de la Reina, la Catedral and la Plaza Redonda.

Don’t miss out on La Lonja de la Seda, or The Silk Exchange, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture that was originally used for silk trading . Also recommended is the Central Market, the biggest fresh produce market in Europe.

Valencia: Beachfront bliss and El Cabañal

The golden sands of Valencia 's beaches not only invite relaxation and sunbathing but also showcase a commitment to sustainability. From the south, the rice fields give way to beaches that proudly wave the European Blue Flag. Also around here is the Marina de Valencia which is worth a brief pitstop.

Venturing into El Cabañal, a historic fishing neighbourhood, I discovered a district that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. Narrow streets, colourful houses and a pleasant sea breeze create a unique atmosphere. Cycling through El Cabañal allows you to take in the beautiful architecture and street art.

La Albufera: The perfect blend of nature and tradition

Cycling through L’Albufera lets you take in the three natural pantries of Valencia: rice fields, fresh fish, and vegetables and fruits from the orchard that surrounds the city.

La Albufera is Spain's largest lake and a cherished wetland. Cycling along the trails surrounding the lagoon, visitors can enjoy a refreshing natural landscape. The area stands as a living testament to the delicate balance between preserving the environment and honouring traditional ways of life.

End your day exploring the port area and indulging in the varied gastronomic offerings that Valencia has to offer. “From Michelin-starred delights to traditional cuisine, every corner is an opportunity to satisfy all tastes and budgets”, says Nuria Montes.
