NZ 4×4 Treks goes International – Mongolia Expedition

Mongolia is the world’s least populated country. this fascinating location is unspoiled and the contrasts in scenery are unrivaled ..

From the beautiful rolling steppes and lakes in the North, to the stunning colours of the Gobi Desert (including 12,000 ft mountain ranges and sand dunes over 1,000 ft high) in the South, Mongolia will captivate you at every turn.

All in a country where there are no fences or restrictions on where you can explore.

“It is the only place in the World that I know of where your 4WD convoy can travel side by side on the multi tracked routes up to a kilometre apart.” Steve Beston

Here is an excerpt from Day 2 of our 2021 itinerary: See our full itinerary here

Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazaryn Chuluu ( 260 Km ) Our Route today follows the main Highway due South from Ulaanbaatar for approximately 200km, then turns due West for a 60km off road run to our Ger Camp at Baga Gazaryn Chuluu. This is a very pretty location of pristine green valleys nestled amongst unusual rock outcrops located in Delgertsogt sum, Dundgovi province and surrounded by plain. The highest outcrop is a 15 km long and 10 km wide granite stone mountain elevated at 1768m above sea level. There are over 20 kinds of medical herbs, like burnet, to be found here and many kinds of wild animals such as marmot, ibex and mountain sheep. After getting acquainted with our first Ger Tent, we will head out and explore this fascinating landscape. ”

Muzzle Station to West Coast

7 Days 8 Nights

Kaikoura Coast to Marlborough

With special access to this iconic area, we travel South along the Clarence River Valley amongst the spectacular peaks of the Kaikoura Mountains, dominated by the mighty Tapuaenuku, Edmund Hilary’s first conquest. Brilliant views of the aquamarine blue waters of the snow fed Clarence River accompany us as we make our way to one of the most remote High Country Stations in the South Island, the mighty Muzzle.

Otago – Southland

Canterbury - southland.

DAY 6: " From Arrowtown, we follow the Kawarau River which is the confluence of the Shotover and Arrow Rivers and runs into the mighty Clutha. From here we climb up over Duffers Saddle, to the East of the Remarkable Range and trek through to the isolated Nevis Valley.  There are multiple crossings of the Nevis River as we make our way South taking in the local gold mining history before entering Lorne Peak Station and climbing out over the Hector Mountains to  Tenants Peak (5000ft). From the dizzying heights of the Hector Mountains we get a spectacular view out over Lake Wakatipu, the Garvie Mountains, the Old Man Range and the Mataura River, famous for its trout fishing."

All New Southland

8 Days 8 Nights

Incredible Views!

Day 3: " We then head for one of New Zealand’s largest High Country Stations, Mt. Nicholas, run by the Butson Family. As with much of the topography surrounding Lake Wakatipu the evidence of the age of the Glaciers is everywhere with spectacular views down this magnificent valley towards the Western arm of Lake Wakatipu.'

Canterbury- West Coast

D'urville island  - lake hawea.

Starting in the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, take a barge trip to D'Urville Island and step back in time. Tackle some iconic 4WD tracks on the West Coast and drive through the incredible scenery of the Southern Alps. " We will follow the Godley Branch of the river as we make our way up the valley and as the track becomes less defined we may break into groups to find the best way across the shingle fans that abound in this area. 12 Day South Island 4X4 Trek

Embark on an unforgettable 4WD journey from Christchurch, venturing deep into the breathtaking Southern Alps of the South Island. Accompanied by an experienced guide & no more than 5 other vehicles, this is the ultimate 4WD adventure.

south island 4x4 tours

Experience the thrill of driving yourself through the South Island mountain country on this 12 Day itinerary. This is a Guided Self-Drive Tour with set select departures.

Day 1 - Arrival in Christchurch

Collect your hire vehicle before checking into the motel. Check into your room at the Airport Gateway Motel from 2pm. Meet the team at the onsite bar at 5pm for a tour briefing followed by dinner.

Day 2 - Christchurch to the Rakaia Valley

This morning you will be collected and taken into town for a guided 50 min Tram tour of Christchurch City. Then enjoy lunch by the Avon River before heading back to the accommodation to collect your vehicles and heading for the hills. The first drive takes you through the Canterbury Plains, over the mighty Rakaia River, and then up the incredibly scenic mountain valley to your accommodation for the night on Glenfalloch Station. This is a boutique style accommodation that is a bit “rustic”. A great dinner awaits tonight, then hear from the property owners and find out what it’s like to live on a remote high country station.

Day 3 - Glenfalloch Station to Mount Sommers

Today you will get into some real 4WDing. The track around Glenfalloch Station through to Lake Heron Station is simply stunning. Some technical 4WD areas over the shingle fans will keep you on your toes, and the towering mountains will have you stopping for photos often. Enjoy lunch on the banks of Lake Stream surrounded by the mountains. Then, stop again on the shores of Lake Heron before continuing down the Ashburton River Valley, and out to the main road at Mount Sommers. Tonight you will stay in the acclaimed “Stronechrubie” Chalets with dinner at the restaurant.

Day 4 - Mount Sommers to Blue Mountain Station

Continuing South on the main road for a short time, you will head up the very scenic and somewhat technical 4WD track through the Orari Gorge. More stunning scenery today with frequent stops to admire the countryside. Trace the river’s source onto Blue Mountain Station, and your Lakeside Chalet accommodation near the private station lake. Dinner tonight is provided by the station owner, who will also tell us all about farming in the area.

Day 5 - Blue Mountain Station to Lake Tekapo

I hope you like helicopters because your scenic flight will pick you up on the lawn outside your accommodation this morning to show you around this magnificent mountain scenery. After the flight, you will take the leisurely drive to the lakeside town of Tekapo. You can stock up at the supermarket this afternoon, just a short distance from our accommodation at Peppers Bluewater Resort. Dinner at the onsite restaurant.

Day 6 - Lake Tekapo to Waitaki Lakes

This morning travel to Black Forest Station, on the shores of Lake Benmore, through the stark landscape of the Mackenzie Country. Following the power pylon track through the station, climb to great heights with some incredible views over the mountains and Lake Benmore. You will then come back to lake level, crossing the hydro dam wall, and then to your accommodation in the lakeside town of Otematata.

Day 7 - Waitaki Lakes to Wedderburn

This morning you will run down the Waitaki River Valley, stopping for morning tea at a high country sheep and deer station near Kurow (home of Richie McCaw – All Black Rugby legend). After passing through Kurow, turn onto the Danseys Pass road and make our way over a high mountain pass. Lunch today is at the famous Danseys Pass Hotel. Continue into the Maniototo area of Central Otago, passing the historic towns of Nasby (coldest town in NZ), and St Bathans, with a stop at the character filled Vulcan Hotel. Backtrack slightly to your cottage accommodation at Wedderburn and the historic tavern over the road for dinner.

Day 8 - Wedderburn to Clyde

The drive through this part of Central Otago is stunning, with vast rolling treeless tussock slopes and eerie lakes. Some of the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed in this area (Plains of Rohan). You’ll eventually drop into the Clutha Valley and follow this through the stone fruit producing areas of Roxburgh, and steep sheep farming land with more rocks than grass, before arriving at your accommodation in the historic village of Clyde.

Day 9 - Clyde to Wanaka

After your included breakfast, travel through Cromwell and along Lake Dunstan to the wonderful lakeside town of Wanaka. After morning tea by the lake, head up the beautiful Matukituki Valley to Mt Aspiring Station for lunch at the station house. A rocking and rolling drive up the East Branch of the Matukituki River reveals stunning views into the surrounding towering mountains. Arrive at your accommodation in Wanaka, and have dinner nearby.

Day 10 - Wanaka to Queentown

Heading back through Cromwell, travel up and over the highest public road in NZ. The Nevis Valley track takes all day. Once up and over the high pass, we descend to the valley floor, following the river to its source amongst huge mountains. Several water crossings make the track that much more interesting. At the head of the valley, climb another high range, with majestic views towards Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. After the long descent, make your way to Queenstown for your last two nights’ accommodation.

Day 11 - Queenstown

For your grand finale, take the drive along the lake to Glenorchy where you board the Dart River Jet for a three hour thrill ride up this spectacular mountain river. The scenery in this area will blow you away, and the jet boat ride will get your blood pumping! Back to town this afternoon (to recover) and then meet for your final farewell dinner somewhere very special!

Day 12 - Queenstown to Christchurch

Today is your final day on this epic journey. Return to Christchurch before embarking onto your next adventure.

Scenic small group tours of New Zealand

Our group of 11 loved the tour through the iconic Molesworth and beyond. Hosts very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and responsive to individual needs. Food and accommodation top class. Scenery fantastic and our group (half using e-bikes and half mountain bikes) all loved the daily rides. Some who wanted to do more were able to which was much appreciated. A big thank you to our tour leaders for making this one of our best NZ cycling experiences

It was a really great ride made all the more enjoyable with all the interesting stories told by Geoff and Phil and the great food presented beautifully by our “hostess with  the mostest” Sue, aka bus driver. She’s a multitasker extraordinaire!!!

The meal at Kelly’s farm was lovely. It was neat to have her and her wee girls join us for lunch and being able to ask her questions about the farm made it really interesting. The stay at the shearers quarters was cool. We loved the meal there too. Great  to have the support of Phil riding with us encouraging everyone and the bus to collapse in if you wished to.

All in all a wonderful experience which I would highly recommend to anyone.

Just to say thank you to you both for a really great holiday! For all the necessary background work and admin required for a tour like this you do a wonderful job Lee so much appreciation! Geoff, you were an excellent tour guide, really well informed and great company, all the details which help to make a very special experience. To add to it all, your baking was delicious Lee and also much appreciated! Thank you again

Thank you for organising the new trip to the West Coast and White Heron Colony. We know that under our own steam we could never have seen and done as much as we did in the time your trip took. So thanks to your planning and the excellent driving, we were both able to relax and enjoy everything on offer.

Of course the highlight was the visit to the White Heron nesting site – an experience to stow away in the memory bank! Having said that there were so many other memorable experiences and I’ll never forget that wonderful garden at Walter Peak Station.

We had a FANtastic trip, Phil and Sue were both amazing and I have to say that I honestly have not enjoyed an organised trip more ever (and I’ve done a few ). The food was unbelievable, the scenery stunning and I really enjoyed staying at the station and even got to see a bit of mustering. An added bonus! I would highly recommend this company and would do another tour with them for sure!

We had the best tour ever far exceeded our expectations from the guides Sue and Phil to the food prepared by Barb and the hosts at the stations were amazing. Sue and Phil were outstanding …so down to earth and friendly nothing was too much bother.

The scenery was spectacular and the ride exhilarating…loved it.

It was an amazing experience, allowing us the opportunity to see some of the vast countryside and scenery up close and talk to some of the locals. You cannot appreciate the landscape and lifestyle when you “fly over the area at altitude”.

This trip was on our bucket list and we can now add the memories to our life experience, (some of which was a bit out of my comfort zone) but well worth it! But, don’t forget the yarns, and great company along the way too

 Tour Guide Tony

A tour guide can make or break your travel experience. you will spend about 2 to 4  weeks with a guide on these kinds of tours, so you want to make sure that the guide ticks all the boxes. the easiest way to figure this out is to get on the phone and give them a call. tony is more than happy to have a chat about his tours, but more than this, you will get a feeling for who he is and the way he operates. in australia, individual tag along tour guides are not required to be accredited, which we think is crazy. ensure your safety in remote environments by opting for a reputable guide with the necessary qualifications. tony is an accredited savannah guide, ecoguides australia, and tour guides australia certified professional guide, with a cert iv trainer & assessor qualification in 4wd instruction. he also has a degree in tourism and a masters degree in science specialising in wildlife management (and he's a self-confessed "wildlife fanatic"). in addition to this, our business is the only tag along tour operator in australia approved under the savannah guides enterprise accreditation scheme. see what savannah guides is all about at  this link . • 8 july - 31 july 2024 (sold out) no trailers. 8 vehicles max. 2025 tour  • 3 june - 26 jun bookings now open. one tour only . from $7822 for 1 or 2 people in one vehicle..

"This tour is not a holiday, it's an experience" The Canning is the longest continuous 4WD track in the World, and a bucket list item for many adventurous travellers. In addition to pitting yourself and your vehicle against the harshness of the track and the environment, the historic component, both European and Indigenous, is fascinating. During this tour, you'll spend a total of 17 days on the actual Canning Stock Route, plenty of time to really enjoy being in the desert. You'll camp among the sand dunes, near historic wells, and under the shade of desert oaks and bloodwood trees. In addition to the stunning desert landscape, you'll also have the opportunity to see unique desert wildlife and plants and learn that there's much more to the desert than just sand. This tour starts at the Crowne Plaza Lasseters Hotel in Alice Springs with an included hotel room and dinner at the restaurant, and ends in Uluru/Ayres Rock with a complimentary Uluru 3 day pass and a final breakfast.  Some remote off-road experience is desirable as the track is VERY ROUGH. If you're considering this tour for your first desert experience, we suggest you should have a crack at our  Simpson Desert Double Crossing Tour  or the Beadell Highways Trek first. Starting with a complimentary 3 day pass to Uluru NP, our first night's accommodation in a cabin at the caravan park, and a welcome dinner in Yulara/Uluru, we then head past the iconic Uluru and Kata Tjuta on our way West along the Great Central Road. Passing into WA, we visit the Giles Meteorological Station before making our way up the seldom travelled and very scenic Sandy Blight Road. New Tour for 2025! Beadell Highways Trek. Alice Springs to Coober Pedy. 15 Nights (incl. Surveyor General's Cnr)

$5775 per vehicle incl. 2 people. 8 vehicles max. off-road camper trailers ok. • 14 may - 28 may 2025 - bookings now open. .

Starting with our included first night's accommodation and dinner at Lasseters Crowne Plaza Hotel in Alice Springs, we take on several of the legendary Len Beadell's Central Australian "Highways" on this giant "C-shaped" trek. From Alice, we find the start of the Gary Highway , following this deep into the desert through some remote Aboriginal Communities all the way into WA, before heading abruptly South on the very scenic and seldom travelled Sandy Blight Road . Emerging onto the Great Central Road , we visit the Giles Meteorological Station near Warakurna, and then onto Surveyor General's Corner , on the tri-state border of SA, NT and WA.  Popping back out onto the Great Central once more, we refuel at Warburton before tackling the remote Connie Sue Highway Southwards into the Great Victoria Desert . From Neale Junction, it's a 900 km run East on the Anne Beadell Highway through incredibly remote desert country. Along the way, there are several points of interest, including the most remote fuel stop in Australia, Ilkurlka Roadhouse, and the Emu Field Nuclear Test Area . We emerge back out into "civilisation" on the Stuart Highway at Coober Pedy, where we will have a night in the underground hotel, and our final dinner together.  Some off-road driving experience is preferred for this tour - it is very remote and the corrugations can be quite rough. Our tours...

The High Country Journeys team have been operating self-drive, 4×4 tours for the past 20 years and have plenty of experience in making sure you’ll have many happy, memorable experiences on your own self-drive adventure that’ll take you into the heart of the South Island high country. You will experience spectacular scenery and warm hospitality as you travel your choosen journey. Accommodation is in home-hosted farmhouses where you learn about the local history of each area that you stay in and drive through. All meals and lunches are provided and the accommodation is of a very high standard. The tracks are generally of a good standard and you won’t be bashing your way through bush, mud holes or rattling up rough riverbeds all day. Some days the tracks will take you up mountain ranges with peaks over 1700m high where you’ll experience the stunning scenery of these tussock-clad mountains and the alpine environment with its many native plants. You’ll look down over river valleys and lakes that will take your breath away. This truly fantastic experience can be enjoyed in style and comfort for the duration of the trip. You don’t need to be an experienced four-wheel driver. However you do need common sense and to be prepared for the odd challenge as you’ll be driving on high country station 4×4 tracks for a good part of each day. One of the couples who did the trip commented that “the journey is definitely not only for the men in the family, wives and partners thoroughly enjoy the high country experience too”. Remember this is a get-up and go adventure holiday, so make the most of each day.

High Country Heritage Tour

From Blenheim south down the island to Cardrona near Queenstown.1250kms and a great deal of variation along the way. From the most intensive to the most extensive of land uses, from flat Canterbury plains to the steep high country mountains further south. From tiny mountain streams to great impossibly blue lakes. This is our High Country Heritage.

Welcome once again and enjoy. Our trip begins on the outskirts of Blenheim where in recent years the traditionally summer brown sheep pastures have given way to both lifestyle blocks and vineyard development as people are drawn to the regions climate and the intensive viticultural potential has been both realised and the area under grapes hugely increased. You will see as we progress across the district many well known vineyard names. In an average year this is a very dry part of New Zealand and it is normal to see the hills surrounding Blenheim looking burnt off and brown.

Our tour guide, Martin, is really nice. We enjoyed his story about the glacier. We also took group picture for us. I don’t know what else you can expect from a tour. Martin is GREAT!

Johan was exceptional! Very personable, connected with everyone on our tour. Cracked some solid jokes too. Made sure to take care of my mom who had some struggles getting up the ice. You can tell he loves his job. And the ice caves were incredible, so worth the trip.

It’s such a great tour, highly recommended to directly book with company! Ann, staff helped me booking the tour just late evening before date of our trip because the agency had failed the booking (months advance booking but inform failure of booking in the morning of the day before the tour date). Thor, the guide of our trip, is professional, nice, funny, careful and very kind to my mother-in-law and her friend who senior with age of 68-70. We also have nice accompanies from Poland. Thank you everyone for the good experience.

It was a great experience. This tour really made the trip for us. AJ was our tour guide and he was extremely personable, experienced and insightful in ice cave and Iceland in general, being a local himself. He had lot of fun stories and facts, and kept us engaged right from the get go in the jeep ride. The ice cave was spectacular, we would never have learnt or experienced Iceland in this eyeopening manner if not for the tour. It was important because it was not only aesthetic, but also bore great responsibility on us to take care of the planet seeing how global warming is affecting nature. AJ gave us an extremely humorous and knowledgeable geology session after the ice cave. He has great photography skills on his Nokia too. Anyone would be lucky to have AJ as the tour guide. It would have been better if the time spent in the ice cave was longer as it was shorter than expected!

Exciting 4x4 Off-Road Tours in Iceland

Spice up your holiday in the land of fire and ice by joining exciting 4x4 off-road tours in Iceland, where you can explore untamed landscapes up close.

These adventure tours typically involve driving off the beaten path in specially equipped 4x4 vehicles, such as modified jeeps or super jeeps. These four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles allow travelers to access remote and challenging terrain often inaccessible by regular cars.

4x4 off-road tours in Iceland offer a variety of routes and destinations to choose from, catering to different interests and durations. Some tours focus on visiting iconic landmarks like waterfalls, lava fields, and geothermal hot springs. In contrast, others are designed for more extreme off-roading experiences, including mountain ascents and glacier crossings.

One of the highlights of 4x4 off-road tours in Iceland is the opportunity to venture into the country's interior, the Highlands. Volcanic deserts, geothermal areas, glaciers, and dramatic mountain ranges characterize this vast, uninhabited wilderness.

Onboard 4x4 vehicles, you can traverse the river crossings, rocky roads, and challenging terrain of the Icelandic Highlands on tours like this Thorsmork valley super jeep tour and this Katla volcano ice caving with super jeep ride .

These tours are guided by experienced and knowledgeable drivers who are well-versed in Iceland's geology, history, and natural wonders. Guides provide commentary and exciting trivia while ensuring the safety of participants throughout the journey.

Whether you're seeking adrenaline-pumping experiences or a nature enthusiast looking to explore unspoiled landscapes, a 4x4 off-road tour in Iceland is waiting for you.
