New Star Trek Feature Film Scheduled for Release in June 2023

' data-src=

It looks like a new Star Trek feature film may be upon us. Today, Paramount Pictures announced a new installment into the Star Trek film franchise with a release date of June 9, 2023 .

This movie news comes hot on the heels of the “First Contact Day” television-centric announcements and reveals, involving Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy .

At this point, the details surrounding this new project are minimal. However, Deadline was first to report the untitled film’s (anticipated) release date:

An untitled  Star Trek  movie is set for June 9, 2023. Universal and 20th Century Studios both have untitled features RSVP’ed on that date currently.

This new film would be the first Star Trek film in seven years if the release date holds. The most recent being Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond in 2016, which starred Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. That film was (at this point) the final chapter in what has come to be known as the “Kelvin Timeline,” which kicked off with 2009’s Star Trek and 2012’s Star Trek Into Darkness .

J.J. Abrams and the cast of 2009's Star Trek

In recent years, there have been multiple Star Trek film projects rumored and some that have seen some initial development, including a Quentin Tarantino R-rated take on Star Trek and Noah Hawley’s rumored continuation of the Kelvin series.

Stay tuned to TrekNews.net for all the latest news on this new Star Trek film, along with Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Prodigy , and more.

The Next Star Trek Movie Has a Stardate in 2023

A poster for the most recent Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond.

Five years have passed since the last Star Trek film —and now it seems we’re two years away from the next one.

Paramount did a big release date shuffle today and in the mix was the news that an untitled Star Trek movie is now set for June 9, 2023. In the past five years, there has been talk of several different Trek films, including one that would bring back Chris Hemsworth along with the Chris Pine-led cast, a Quentin Tarantino written one, and one by Legion’s Noah Hawley . However, most of those are long considered dead.

The most recent Trek movie news was that a movie was being written by Kalinda Vazquez, a producer and writer on   Star Trek: Discovery , with J.J. Abrams set to produce. However, a source close to the project told io9 this is not the Vazquez script. It is, however, a separate J.J. Abrams- produced Trek film but all detail beyond that remains top secret. So we have no idea if the story will be told in the Kelvin timeline, which is the timeline the previous Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto movies took place in, have something to do  with the new shows, or what.

All that is clear is that date: June 9, 2023. Which makes it seem very likely Star Trek: Mission Chicago , taking place from April 8-10, 2022 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, IL, will have plenty of news about it.

The next Star Trek movie is scheduled for 2023

Paramount has delayed 'top gun: maverick' and 'mission: impossible 7' in a shakeup of its release calendar..

It's been five long years since the last Star Trek movie and while the next one might still be quite some time away, there's at least some light at the end of the tunnel (or wormhole) for Trekkers. Paramount Pictures has announced a June 9th, 2023 release date for an untitled Star Trek film, according to Variety . Last month, the studio hired Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to pen the script for a movie based on an original idea of hers, but it's unclear if that's the same project.

Whether Paramount sticks to that date remains to be seen. There have been several attempts to make a follow up to Star Trek: Beyond over the last few years, including one from Quentin Tarantino , but none have panned out as yet.

Between now and the next movie coming out, fans will have several new seasons of Star Trek shows to check out on Paramount+ . Discovery and Lower Decks will return later this year, while the second season of Star Trek: Picard will arrive in 2022.

Meanwhile, Paramount has shifted around its schedule for other movies, with a knock-on effect to future films, as theaters continue to slowly reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Top Gun: Maverick has moved from July 2nd to November 19th, while Mission: Impossible 7 has been delayed from the latter date to May 27th next year. The following movie in the Mission: Impossible saga will now be released on July 7th, 2023 instead of November 4th, 2022. Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons , which was scheduled for May 27th next year, has been delayed to March 3rd, 2023.

  • Star Trek 4 is finally happening with new writers and a new director, after a series of false starts and different ideas.
  • While details on the story and cast are still unknown, the film has the potential to explore various aspects of the Star Trek universe, including the Kelvin timeline and the Prime universe.
  • The release date for Star Trek 4 is set for June 9, 2023, but it is subject to change depending on the progress of production.

Star Trek 4 is finally happening, and here's everything we know about it, from its potential release date to the story details. The current iteration of the big screen Star Trek film franchise began in 2009 with J.J. Abrams' quasi-reboot Star Trek , starring Chris Pine as a younger, alternate universe version of Captain James T. Kirk . That first film and its sequel, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness , were box office and critical hits. And while 2016's Star Trek Beyond was greeted warmly by critics and fans, it struggled at the box office, and Trek 's future has been in question ever since.

While the movie wing of the Star Trek franchise has been faltering, the TV side has been flourishing. Star Trek: Discovery kicked off the modern era of Trek shows in 2017, followed by the hit Star Trek: Picard , and the adult animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks . Along with more seasons for all three series, more shows are on the horizon, as Star Trek becomes a foundational portion of the new streaming service Paramount+ (rebranded from CBS All Access).

But just because things are moving smoothly on TV, that doesn't mean Paramount isn't looking to transfer some of that success to the big screen. There have been some false starts on the film side over the past few years, with a handful of different Star Trek 4 ideas being thrown around, but it seems that the sequel is finally back on track with a new writer and direction.

Star Trek 4 Is Happening

It was previously announced that Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vasquez - who was actually named after a character on Star Trek: The Original Series - would write Star Trek 4. However, that's since changed, as Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are now set to pen the script. Beer is set to write and direct a Pet Sematary prequel for Paramount too, while Robertson-Dworet was a co-writer on Captain Marvel . Abrams will return to produce, but directing duties are being handed to Matt Shakman , who helmed Marvel's WandaVision show as well as working on episodes of Game of Thrones . This follows a few false starts, including ideas from Quentin Tarantino and Fargo and Legion mastermind Noah Hawley. Tarantino seems to have steadily lost interest in the idea, and Hawley admitted the studio wanted to go in a different direction than what he had planned.

Will The Star Trek: Beyond Cast Return?

It's not yet clear if the cast from the three previous films will return. At one point, the plan was absolutely to have the cast back in a time travel story that would have included Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk from 2009's Star Trek , but that was several iterations ago. Hawley's story likely would not have included Pine and friends, since it was going in a new direction with a new cast. As for what era of Star Trek Beer and Robertson-Dworet's story takes place in, it's simply too early to tell.

Star Trek 4 Story

There are no concrete story hints at this point. Now that Star Trek is under one corporate umbrella again, virtually the entire Star Trek mythos would be open to exploring in a feature film, be it the Kelvin timeline films with Pine and company, or something set in the Prime universe that can expand on Picard , Discovery , or other shows. Of course, Paramount and crew could also boldly go in a new direction no writer or director has gone before.

Star Trek 4 Release Date

Paramount has dated Star Trek 4 's theatrical bow for June 9, 2023. Seeing as how it's only in the script stage and no cast or official title have been announced, a two-plus year wait for fans from now seems about right. Typically, past Star Trek movies took that long when moving through development and into production, then post-production. Of course, should there be any major delays in getting production moving, that far away release date gives Paramount wiggle room to push it back if need be, with little likely backlash.

'Jurassic World 4' Rounds Out Cast With This 'Dead Boy Detectives' Star

An iconic samurai film is returning to theaters this summer in 4k, the 10 best horror movies that aren't scary, ranked.

Ever since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , the film franchise has been in a holding pattern. When the films first came back with 2009’s Star Trek , director J.J. Abrams gave them a heavy Star Wars sheen, which then became irrelevant when real Star Wars movies returned in 2015. While the Star Trek brand hasn’t slowed down with Paramount pumping out a bunch of Trek series including Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Picard , and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , not much has happened with the films. There was talk of a fourth installment that would unite Chris Pine ’s James T. Kirk with his father George Kirk, played by Chris Hemsworth , but that never came together . There was also talk of Quentin Tarantino tackling a Star Trek , but that seems more like a fleeting fancy than a serious pursuit . And then there was Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley pursuing a Trek film that then also evaporated .

And yet today Paramount announced that they’ve got an untitled Star Trek on the books for June 9, 2023. Of course, release dates are highly subject to change, and it’s now standard operating procedures for studios to claim weekends before they even have a script. The truth is that we don’t know anything about this new Trek . We don’t know if it’s a continuation of the Kelvin timeline started with Star Trek 2009 or if it’s a fresh reboot, but io9 reports that it's being produced by Abrams.

RELATED:  Exclusive: 'Star Trek' Kiss Immortalized for Gene Roddenberry Centennial

Personally, I’m hoping for the reboot route. While I think Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Beyond are fun movies, they still feel like they don’t completely understand Trek , although Beyond gets pretty close to the 1960s TV series in terms of the scope of its adventure. But maybe the best thing for a Trek movie would be to simply rest on the brand name and build something from scratch. You could still interact with major Trek elements like the Borg or the Klingons or whatever, but you wouldn’t have to worry about alternate timelines or how your new take on Captain Kirk compares to The Original Series .

Of course, with everything being big, interconnected IP these days and Viacom gobbling CBS back up (they were previously split apart during the Kelvin timeline), my bet is on something that can link back to what’s happening on the Paramount+ series so that in the name of corporate synergy if you watch this new Star Trek movie you’ll be tempted to check out Star Trek Discovery or Star Trek: Picard or something that makes it so that the movies don’t stand alone. Everything is cinematic universes now, so why should Trek be any different.

A New Star Trek Movie Is Officially Coming To Theaters, Sorry Tarantino

star trek june 9 2023

The Star Trek franchise is a versatile one that has entertained audiences for decades . And while the story continues to grow on the small screen thanks to Star Trek: Discovery and Picard , the property has been noticeably missing from theaters. But it looks like that's going to change, as Paramount just revealed a slew of shake-ups, as well as the first official release date for a new Star Trek movie. Set phasers to stun, because the franchise is back in theaters with a mysterious project on June 9th, 2023. Sorry, Quentin Tarantino .

This update comes to us from Paramount's official press team, which revealed a number of movie delays. While fans were disappointed learning that highly anticipated blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 were pushed back, there was a silver lining. Namely, because Stark Trek is finally returning to theaters in 2023. Although exactly what this movie is remains a mystery.

The public knows pretty much nothing about the Star Trek movie that's being planned by Paramount. Some fans are no doubt hoping to see the most recent film franchise continue, with actors like Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana reprising their roles. The cast has indeed expressed interest in such, although they'll be noticeably missing late actor Anton Yelchin. Of course, there's also that long-rumored Quentin Tarantino movie. Although the last we heard, he wasn't attached to helm the currently developing project.

Acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has been very particular about his career. The Oscar winner plans on releasing just ten total projects, with the most recent being number 9: Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood . Still, Tarantino has expressed interest in putting his own spin on the beloved science fiction property. What's more, he's gone on to say that if he did tackle Star Trek , it would serve as an exception to his ten movie rule.

The idea of a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek movie something that cinephiles have collectively gone wild over, but all signs point to the mysterious 2023 movie being helmed by another filmmaker altogether. We'll just have to see if Paramount intends on rebooting the popular property, or continuing the current Kelvin timeline. After all, actors like Zachary Quinto seem ready dive back into the beloved property.

Chris Pine led the cast as Kirk in the last three installment of the Stark Trek franchise. Now that his time playing Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise has seemingly come to an end (again), his schedule should be freed up. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

In fact, the busiest person from the current Star Trek cast is probably Zoe Saldana. In addition to playing Uhura in the last trilogy, she's also got leading roles as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy and Neytiri in Avatar . Both of those properties have new installments coming, so if the Kelvin timeline is continuing Saldana should have yet another beloved franchise appearance.

New 'Star Trek' movie slated for 2023 lands 'Wandavision' director Matt Shakman

Paramount Pictures has tapped

A report from Deadline states the as-yet untitled " Star Trek " movie slated to be released in 2023 will be directed by Matt Shakman. This has also been confirmed by Paramount Pictures.

Shakman is most recently known for showrunning the nine-episode limited series "WandaVision" for Marvel on Disney Plus and that show has been nominated for an impressive 23 Emmy Awards, including one for Shakman's work directing the series. He has also directed episodes of critically-acclaimed TV shows like HBO's "Game of Thrones," Amazon's "The Boys" and FX's "Fargo."

This latest big-screen incarnation will again be produced by J.J. Abrams and will use a script written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the latter of whose credits include "Captain Marvel" and "Tomb Raider."

However, little else is known or has been confirmed. In an earlier — and now edited — version of that same Deadline story, it included a sentence that mentioned the original cast was returning and thus suggested the film would once again take place in the Kelvin Timeline. However, the story has since been changed and that sentence removed. So we assume that this hasn't yet been confirmed.

Several directors have expressed an interest in the nest "Star Trek" movie over the last few years since the disappointing " Star Trek Beyond " was released in 2016, including Quentin Tarantino, Justin Lin and Noah Hawley and as recently as March 2021, writer Kalinda Vazquez was tapped to script the next installment.

Deadline also reports that the 2023 film is going to move quickly into production, with principal photography scheduled to begin as early as next spring — clearly necessary if Paramount wants to have it showing in theaters by June 9, 2023. We wait to hear more on news of casting and how this new movie will slot into the "Star Trek" multiverse.

Finally, actor Scott Grimes recently tweeted that — for him at least — the third season of "The Orville" had finally wrapped. Grimes plays a pretty central character, Lt. Gordon Malloy, so we can only assume that if principal photography hasn't concluded in its entirety, it very soon will. Sadly, there's still no word on when we can expect to see season three, maybe there might be a panel at this year's New York Comic-Con, as there was two years ago, in 2019 .

UPDATE:  Our friends over at io9.com report that this is actually another, different project; “a separate J.J. Abrams-produced Trek film but all detail beyond that remains top secret.”

For today, all we’ve got is a date on the calendar, one that means a new Star Trek film project would have to start going in front of cameras very, very soon — that is, if the studio has finally cracked the code on the elusive fourteenth Star Trek film this time… for real.

Paramount has added a Star Trek movie to its release slate.

The as-yet untitled film is set to hit theaters June 9, 2023, per The Hollywood Reporter . In addition, the studio has scheduled an untitled Bee Gees movie for Nov. 4, 2022, Ron Howard's animated film The Shrinking of Treehorn for Nov. 10, 2023 and an untitled movie led by Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski for Nov. 17, 2023.

Following Star Trek Beyond 's disappointing box office performance in 2016, Paramount has struggled to get a new installment in the Star Trek movie franchise off the ground. Recently, however, the studio recruited Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to pen the script for an original film set in the iconic sci-fi universe, with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot producing. Abrams also directed Star Trek (2009) and its sequel, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness , both of which are set in the same alternate quantum universe, AKA the Kelvin timeline, as Beyond .

Despite the continued hopes of cast members Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto , Paramount has yet to commit to making a fourth movie featuring the leads from 2009's Star Trek and its sequels. Star Trek films developed by Noah Hawley and Quentin Tarantino have similarly stalled over the last few years, with both directors indicating they don't expect to make them anytime soon, if ever, in their most recent updates. At Disney's Investor Day in Dec. 2020, it was revealed that FX on Hulu is moving forward with Hawley's Alien TV series , further suggesting his Star Trek movie has fallen by the wayside.

On the small screen, it's a much different story. Paramount+ is home to both  Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard , which are currently gearing up for their fourth and second seasons, respectively. The streaming platform also has Star Trek: Lower Decks , an animated comedy series that's already been renewed for Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 premiere.

Elsewhere, the  Discovery spinoff series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is actively filming on through to July and will launch on Paramount+. Finally, there's Star Trek: Prodigy , an animated show in which Kate Mulgrew will reprise her Star Trek: Voyager role as Kathryn Janeway. That series is also scheduled to begin streaming this year.

The untitled Star Trek film opens June 9, 2023.

Five years have passed since the last Star Trek movie hit the theaters. Now it seems fans may be only two years away from the next sci-fi chapter, as the next Star Trek film is finally moving forward at Paramount.

After Star Trek: Beyond, Paramount wasn’t sure which direction to take the franchise on the big screen next. As Beyond closed out the trilogy with the lowest box office revenue at $344 million with a production budget of $185 million, executives spent years thinking of a new approach for the next installment. At certain times, Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley were both set as Star Trek 4’s directors, yet none of these projects eventually got to full production.

Paramount Pictures has made a discreet but long-awaited announcement about the next Star Trek movie’s release. The company made multiple changes to its upcoming movie release slate, including an untitled Star Trek movie slated for June 9, 2023. Even though fans aren't clear on what the story will be about, you now know when you can expect it.

It is not confirmed who is involved with the new Star Trek movie, though it’s unlikely the upcoming movie will be a complete reboot. Fans are speculating Chris Pine, Zakari Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Simon Pegg will return for their key roles in the fourth Star Trek film. Paramount additionally confirmed that J.J. Abrams, who directed the first movie and Star Trek Into Darkness, will be a producer on the new project.

Only a month ago, Paramount hired writer Kalinda Vazquez to work on a new movie script for Star Trek. Vazquez has previously worked on Star Trek: Discovery, Roadmarks, Fear the Walking Dead, and Runaways as a writer and producer. It is possible the studio is happy with Vazquez’s ideas for the next Star Trek, which will be based on her script.

The Star Trek franchise shines on the small screen with notable shows as Star Trek: Discovery or Picard. Perhaps Paramount can finally make the property a massive hit on the big screen as well with the new original concepts fans have never seen before.

New Star Trek movie slated for theatrical release in 2023

TJ Jeffrey

In what has become a Friday afternoon habit, more major Star Trek news dropped today via Deadline . It revealed that not one, but potentially two new Star Trek movies are in the pipeline.

It’s just over a month since Deadline broke the news on Kalinda Vazquez’s Trek movie project , after her successfully pitch to Paramount. Today, Deadline once again delivered a surprise, albeit more discreetly via an article focusing on Paramount’s movie release dates shuffle. In amongst the details was a spot on the June 2023 slate for an “ Untitled Star Trek” movie.

star trek june 9 2023

The official Star Trek site then followed that up, confirming the news:

“Today, Paramount Studios announced that they will be releasing an untitled Star Trek Universe movie on June 9, 2023. As of now, the film is untitled.” Via StarTrek.com

There have been a number of stalled attempts in recent years starting with a Kelvin Timeline Star Trek 4 , announced in 2016 . Plus a reboot project from Quentin Tarantino was announced, but neither have so far materialised. Then in 2019 Deadline reported that writer/director Noah Hawley had picked up the reins of Star Trek 4. It wasn’t long however, until that project went quiet again.

NEW UNTITLED STAR TREK MOVIE

Now we have the new Untitled Star Trek Project set for 2023. What wasn’t clear was if this was the release slot for the Vazquez movie, something new, or re-activated Star Trek 4.

Website PopCulture spoke to the Kelvin universe’s Mr Spock – actor Zachary Quinto – just a few days ago. And asked the actor about the possibility of a new movie and returning to the role.

“Honestly, I have no real idea what’s going on with  Star Trek . [But] we all love each other and we all love that experience and I’m sure if it comes back around and we’re all available, I’m sure we’d be happy to jump back on board. But I don’t know — that’s in other people’s hands and I know I, for one, have had sort of moved on in terms of any kind of expectations, but you never know things come back in surprising ways and it’s surprising times, and it could be fun if it happens.”

Fortuitous, given the timing of the Deadline article release, but that still doesn’t clear up the debate on if this is new, or what Trek timeline it could be set in.

Got a bit of news on this new 2023 Trek film. It’s not the recently announced one, written by Kalinda Vazquez. This is a new project and J.J. Abrams is producing. https://t.co/xIKtkfLyts — Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) April 9, 2021

A tweet from io9 writer Germain Lussier linking to an io9 article quickly provided some potential clarification:

a source close to the project told io9 this is not the Vazquez script. It is, however, a separate J.J. Abrams-produced  Trek  film but all detail beyond that remains top secret.

TWO NEW STAR TREK MOVIES?

If io9’s source is correct, it would mean there are now two new Star Trek films in the pipeline, both produced by Bad Robot.

Startrek.com went on to clarify… or maybe muddy the waters a little further:

“This will be the first new Star Trek film since the last instalment in the Kelvin-verse…[.]…As of now, there is no official information concerning the director of this latest movie, nor do we know whether or not we’ll be exploring more of the Kelvin-verse, perhaps pick up from where Star Trek: Nemesis left off with The Next Generation films, or if the film will follow a new plot entirely through the Prime timeline.”

This strengthen’s the claim these are two separate projects. Vazquez’s project was announced first, so it’s interesting to note it does not have a slot.

COULD VAZQUEZ’S PROJECT GET A STREAMING RELEASE?

There have been rumours surrounding a Star Trek: Discovery cast led feature, so far total unsubstantiated. Vazquez has of course written for Discovery, so the movie news expands her role in the franchise.

Something else to consider is a change in Discovery’s season 4 production schedule. A Toronto production blog revealed a few weeks ago that Discovery has added 2 extra months to its planned schedule, now shooting thru to mid-August. It’s important to stress that schedule changes due to delays in production are nothing new in COVID times. Delays for major productions however, are often reported by the press, but so far nothing has been noted for Discovery .

Also, with 5 Star Trek shows now on air or in production, only 4 of them will premiere each year with Paramount+’s one show a quarter plan. This scheduling will lead to longer hiatus between seasons for viewers and cast. Thanks to the flexibility of streaming schedules, this is nothing new. Many streaming shows with heavy production values take longer breaks, such as Amazon Prime’s The Man in the High Castle and HBO’s Game of Thrones . Plus it’s likely that Paramount+ would branch out into producing other formats for its service. Direct-to-streaming movies have been very successful for other streaming platforms. There’s nothing stopping these including some based on its tv franchises. But this is all speculation, it’ll certainly be interesting to see where things go when more details are revealed.

We’ll keep a close eye out for more information on these movie projects, and of course report all the latest Star Trek news as and when it happens.

The Next Star Trek Movie Is Set To Come Out Sooner Than You Think

The new Captain Kirk

The last few years have been a great time to be a Star Trek fan, at least as far as the small screen is concerned. Currently, Trekkies can check out two live-action TV shows airing new episodes on Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard , plus the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. Then there's  Star Trek: Short Treks , which ended in 2020, and another animated series, the upcoming  Star Trek: Prodigies .

But Star Trek hasn't been quite as bountiful when it comes to movies. The last Star Trek film was 2016's Star Trek Beyond , which was the third installment in the rebooted movie series that began in 2009, aka "the Kelvin timeline." (Or "the one with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.")

So that's why today's news should be exciting. As reported by TrekMovie  and many other outlets, Paramount Pictures has announced a brand-new "Star Trek" movie. It doesn't yet have a title, but it does have a release date. Here's what we know.

You can set your phasers to 'Yay!' in just a couple years.

The next Star Trek movie will premiere on June 9, 2023. While plot details haven't yet been released, sources have also shared details on who will be involved in the movie, and who won't be.

The new movie will be produced by J.J. Abrams, who produced all three films in the Kelvin timeline reboot trilogy and directed the first two, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). Paramount hasn't indicated whether the new movie will also take place in the Kelvin timeline or whether it will tie into any of the new TV series, which all take place in the "Prime" timeline . That latter timeline includes the original series, The Next Generation , Picard , and pretty much everything except the Kelvin timeline.

As reported by iO9 , the new movie will also be based on a script that hasn't been previously reported on. That means it won't be any of the recent Star Trek films that have been in development. In other words, it won't be the script written by Star Trek: Discovery writer-producer Kalinda Vazquez, which was reported in March 2021, nor will it be the scripts written by Quentin Tarantino or Legion 's Noah Hawley.

There's really no other news yet beyond the date. But it's likely more than enough to make Trekkies happy.

Paramount is pushing back two of its tentpoles.

Transformers : Rise of the Beasts has moved back a year and will now bow June 9, 2023. It previously was slated for June 24, 2022. The film, from Creed II director Steven Caple Jr., stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback. Set in the 1990s, the globe-trotting property is nearing the end of principal photography, with locations shown in the film including Brooklyn, New York, and Peru. Entertainment One, Hasbro’s entertainment studio, is executive producing. Skydance is co-financing and executive producing.

The decision to make the major date changes comes as newly installed Paramount CEO Brian Robbins takes control of the studio’s pipeline.

'bad boys: ride or die' lands $5.9m in box office previews, kevin costner's $100m 'horizon' movie tracking for worrisome $12m domestic opening.

Earlier this year, Caple unveiled his vision for his Transformers film, which is inspired by the popular 1990s Beast Wars property.

“There are different breeds of Transformers,” said Caple . “In our particular film, they are prehistoric animals who travel through time and space, and we find them here on Earth.”

Meanwhile, the mysterious next Star Trek film has moved to Dec. 22, 2023, from June 9, 2023. It is unknown who will star in the film or if Chris Pine, who played Captain Kirk in three films from 2009 to 2016, or any of his crew will be back.

The Trek  film hails from  WandaVision director Matt Shakman, with Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires rewriting a script from Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Trek  has not appeared on the big screen since 2016’s  Star Trek Beyond , which underperformed at the box office , but has been alive and well on Paramount+ with Star Trek Discovery and numerous other spinoffs streaming. As has been the case since 2009, J.J. Abrams is producing the new Trek film.

“Where we go with the franchise next theatrically is crucial to the health of the overall franchise,” Robbins told   The Hollywood Reporter in October. “There’s no doubt that big theatrical movies are the beacon that ignite franchises. We’re in it and I don’t really have anything to say because I’m waiting for the development to be delivered. I can’t wait to get going on it; we’re not there yet, but we need to get there soon.”

Trekkies have a lot to be thankful for this year as the Star Trek franchise we all know and love shows no signs of slowing down!

As of now, there are four series in production within the entire franchise. Before streaming took over in the mid 2010s, there were only five broadcast series on air including The Original Series ,  The Next Generation ,  Deep Space Nine ,  Voyager , and  Enterprise . Now, with so many additions, both animated and live-action, it seems almost impossible to keep track of what to watch next, but you’ve come to the right place.

If you’ve been wondering when and where you can watch the current and upcoming seasons of Star Trek series and learn what anticipated films are set to be made, read on to find out!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The most recently released live-action series in the franchise received positive reviews and has already been ordered for a third season ahead of its second season release. Strange New Worlds is set a decade before the events of the original series in the 23rd century and offers up a contemporary take on the original series’ episodic storytelling and 1960s design choices.

The main cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. The second season will premiere on Paramount+ on June 15 .

Star Trek: Lower Decks

The adult animated series takes place in the late 24th century in the Star Trek universe, in which Earth is part of the multi-species United Federation of Planets and focuses on Starfleet’s least important starships, the USS Cerritos.

The main cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell. Even though the fourth season has yet to premiere, a fifth season was ordered in March 2023 and is already in development. Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in Summer 2023  with a 10-episode run.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Another wildly popular animated series in the franchise, Nickelodeon’s P rodigy is returning for a second season. The main cast includes Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Dee Bradley Baker, and Kate Mulgrew.

The series, which was met with positive reviews from critics and even received a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, has been airing since 2021. While an exact release date has not yet been set, season 2 will arrive this upcoming winter on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

The live-action series begins around ten years before the events of The Original Series which aired in the mid to late ’60s. The main cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, and Mary Wiseman. A final 10-episode fifth season was ordered in January 2022 and is expected to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in early 2024.

Star Trek 4

The long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond was originally supposed to be released in December 2023 but has since been pushed back. It is unclear when the film will be released in theaters.

Star Trek: Section 31

This movie is based on the novels that explore the operations of the clandestine organization known as Section 31 and expected to be released on streaming platform Paramount+. The film stars Michelle Yeoh who first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh returns as an alternate universe version of her character who is now named Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’ll be the central character in this movie. It is yet to be announced when filming will start but keep your eyes peeled for a date soon!

55 Years Ago: Star Trek Final Episode Airs, Relationship with NASA Endures

Johnson space center.

The voyages of the Starship Enterprise came to a sudden and premature end on June 3, 1969, with the airing of the final episode of the Star Trek original television series. Ironically, the show’s cancellation came just six weeks before humanity embarked on its first voyage to land on another celestial body. Although the show ran for only three seasons, it generated a devoted fan base disappointed by the cancellation despite their write-in campaign to keep it on the air. But as things turned out, over the decades Star Trek evolved into a global phenomenon, first with the original episodes replayed in syndication, followed by a series of full-length motion pictures, and eventually a multitude of spin-off series. With its primary focus on space exploration, along with themes of diversity, inclusion, and innovation, the Star Trek fictional universe formed a natural association with NASA’s real life activities.

A scene from “The Man Trap,” the premiere episode of Star Trek

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry first had the idea for a science fiction television series in 1964. He presented his idea, a show set in the 23 rd century aboard a starship with a crew dedicated to exploring the galaxy, to Desilu Productions, an independent television production company headed by Lucille Ball. They produced a pilot titled “The Cage,” selling it to the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) network that then bought a second pilot titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” NBC introduced the show to its fall 1966 lineup, with the first episode “The Man Trap” airing on Sep. 8. To put that date in perspective, NASA launched Gemini XI four days later, one of the missions that helped the agency achieve the Moon landing nearly three years later. Meanwhile, Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise continued its fictional five-year mission through the galaxy to “seek out new life and new civilizations.” The makeup of the Enterprise’s crew made the show particularly attractive to late 1960s television audiences. The major characters included an African American woman communications officer, an Asian American helmsman, and a half-human half-Vulcan science officer, later joined by a Russian-born ensign. While the show enjoyed good ratings during its first two seasons, cuts to its production budget resulted in lower quality episodes during its third season leading to lower ratings and, despite a concerted letter-writing campaign from its dedicated fans, eventual cancellation.

NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher, left, with the creator and cast members of Star Trek at the September 1976 rollout of space shuttle Enterprise

Despite the show’s cancellation, Star Trek lived on and prospered in syndication and attracted an ever-growing fan base, turning into a worldwide sensation. Often dubbed “trekkies,” these fans held the first of many Star Trek conventions in 1972. When in 1976 NASA announced that it would name its first space shuttle orbiter Constitution, in honor of its unveiling on the anniversary of the U. S. Constitution’s ratification, trekkies engaged in a dedicated letter writing campaign to have the orbiter named Enterprise, after the starship in the television series. This time the fans’ letter writing campaign succeeded. President Gerald R. Ford agreed with the trekkies and directed NASA to rechristen the first space shuttle. When on Sept. 17, 1976 , it rolled out of its manufacturing plant in Palmdale, California, appropriately accompanied by a band playing the show’s theme song, it bore the name Enterprise. Many of the original cast members of the show as well as its creator Rodenberry participated in the rollout ceremony, hosted by NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher . Thus began a lengthy relationship between the space agency and the Star Trek brand.

Star Trek cast member Nichelle Nichols, left, in the shuttle simulator with astronaut Alan L. Bean at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston

During the development of the space shuttle in the 1970s, the need arose to recruit a new group of astronauts to fly the vehicle, deploy the satellites, and perform the science experiments. When NASA released the call for the new astronaut selection on July 8, 1976, it specifically encouraged women and minorities to apply. To encourage those applicants, NASA chose Nichelle Nichols, who played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the Starship Enterprise, to record a recruiting video and speak to audiences nationwide. She came to NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston in March 1977, and accompanied by Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut Alan L. Bean , toured the center and filmed scenes for the video in Mission Control and other facilities. NASA hoped that her stature and popularity would encourage women and minorities to apply, and indeed they did. In January 1978, when NASA announced the selection of 35 new astronauts from more than 8,000 applicants, for the first time the astronaut class included women and minorities. All distinguished themselves as NASA astronauts and paved the way for others in subsequent astronaut selections. Nichols returned to JSC in September 2010 with the Traveling Space Museum, an organization that partners with schools to promote space studies. She toured Mission Control and the International Space Station trainer accompanied by NASA astronaut B. Alvin Drew . She also flew aboard NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) airborne telescope aircraft managed by NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California, in September 2015.

Meanwhile, the Star Trek brand renewed itself in 1979 as a full-length motion picture with the original TV series cast members reprising their roles. Over the years, several sequels followed this first film. And on the small screen, a reboot of sorts occurred in 1987 with the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation, a new series set in the 24 th century aboard the Enterprise-D, a next generation starship with a new crew. That series lasted seven seasons, followed by a near-bewildering array of spin-off series, all built on the Star Trek brand, that continue to this day.

Actor James Doohan visits NASA’s Dryden (now Armstrong) Flight Research Center in California in 1967 with NASA pilot Bruce A. Peterson, in front of the M2-F2 lifting body aircraft

James Doohan, the actor who played Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, the Starship Enterprise’s chief engineer, had early associations with NASA. In April 1967, Doohan visited NASA’s Dryden (now Armstrong) Flight Research Center in California, spending time with NASA test pilot Bruce A. Peterson. A month later, Peterson barely survived a horrific crash of the experimental M2-F2 lifting body aircraft. He inspired the 1970s TV series The Six-Million Dollar Man, and the show’s opening credits include film of the crash. Doohan narrated a documentary film about the space shuttle released shortly before Columbia made its first flight in April 1981. In January 1991, Doohan visited JSC and with NASA astronaut Mario Runco (who sometimes went by the nickname “Spock”) toured the shuttle trainers, Mission Control, and tried his hand at operating the shuttle’s robotic arm in the Manipulator Development Facility. In a unique tribute, astronaut Neil A. Armstrong , the first person to step on the lunar surface , spoke at Doohan’s retirement in 2004, addressing him as “one old engineer to another.”

Takei and Robonaut both give the Vulcan greeting

George Takei, who played Enterprise helmsman Lt. Hikaru Sulu, and his husband Brad, visited JSC in May 2012. Invited by both Asian American and LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groups, Takei spoke of leadership and inclusiveness, including overcoming challenges while in Japanese American internment camps during World War II and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. He noted that Star Trek remained ahead of its time in creating a future when all members of society could equally participate in great undertakings, at a time when the country struggled through the Civil Rights movement and the conflict in Southeast Asia. The inclusiveness that is part of NASA’s culture greatly inspired him. JSC Director Michael L. Coats presented Takei with a plaque including a U.S. flag flown aboard space shuttle Atlantis’ STS-135 mission. He also visited Mission Control and spent some time with Robonaut.

Star Trek cast member Leonard Nimoy gives the Vulcan greeting in front of space shuttle Enterprise after its arrival in New York in 2012

Leonard Nimoy played the science officer aboard the Starship Enterprise, the half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. The actor watched in September 2012 when space shuttle Enterprise arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, on the last leg of its journey to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, where it currently resides. “This is a reunion for me,” observed Nimoy. “Thirty-five years ago, I met the Enterprise for the first time.” As noted earlier, the Star Trek cast attended the first space shuttle’s rollout in 1976. Following his death in 2015, European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti paid tribute to Nimoy aboard the International Space Station by wearing a Star Trek science officer uniform, giving the Vulcan greeting, and proclaiming, “Of all the souls I have encountered … his was the most human.”

Star Trek cast member William Shatner, left, receives the Distinguished Public Service Medal from NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Communications Robert N. Jacobs in 2014

Captain James T. Kirk, played by actor William Shatner, a life-long advocate of science and space exploration, served at the helm of the Starship Enterprise. His relationship with NASA began during the original series, with references to the space agency incorporated into several story lines. In 2011, Shatner hosted and narrated a NASA documentary celebrating the 30 th anniversary of the Space Shuttle program , and gave his time and voice to other NASA documentaries. NASA recognized Shatner’s contributions in 2014 with a Distinguished Public Service Medal , the highest award NASA bestows on non-government individuals. NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Communications Robert “Bob” N. Jacobs presented the medal to Shatner. The award’s citation read, “For outstanding generosity and dedication to inspiring new generations of explorers around the world, and for unwavering support for NASA and its missions of discovery.” In 2019, Shatner narrated the NASA video We Are Going , about NASA’s plans to return astronauts to the Moon. He has spoken at numerous NASA-themed events and moderated panels about NASA’s future plans. On Oct. 13, 2021, at the age of 90, Shatner reached the edge of space during the NS-18 suborbital flight of Blue Origin’s New Shepard vehicle, experiencing three minutes of weightlessness.

Patch for the Window Observational Research Facility (WORF), including the Klingon writing just below the letters “WORF.”

Elements of the Star Trek universe have made their way not only into popular culture but also into NASA culture. As noted above, Star Trek fans had a hand in naming the first space shuttle Enterprise. NASA’s Earth observation facility aboard the space station that makes use of its optical quality window bears the name the Window Observational Research Facility (WORF). The connection between that acronym and the name of a Klingon officer aboard the Enterprise in the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series seemed like an opportunity not to be missed – the facility’s official patch bears its name in English and in Klingon. Several astronaut crews have embraced Star Trek themes for their unofficial photographs. The STS-54 crew dressed in the uniforms of Starship Enterprise officers from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, the second full-length feature motion picture of the series. Space shuttle and space station crews created Space Flight Awareness (SFA) posters for their missions, and more than one embraced Star Trek themes. The Expedition 21 crew dressed in uniforms from the original series, while the STS-134 crew chose as their motif the 2009 reboot motion picture Star Trek.

Picture of the Gemini VI launch in the background in the 1967 Star Trek episode “Court Martial.”

As much as Star Trek has influenced NASA, in turn the agency has left its mark on the franchise, from episodes referencing actual and future spaceflight events to NASA astronauts making cameo appearances on the show. The first-season episode “Court Martial” that aired in February 1967 featured a photograph of the December 1965 Gemini VI launch adorning a wall aboard a star base. In the second-season episode “Return to Tomorrow,” airing in February 1968, Captain Kirk in a dialogue about risk-taking remarks, “Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn’t reached the Moon?” a prescient reference to the first Apollo mission to reach the Moon more than 10 months after the episode aired. Astronaut Mae C. Jemison , who credits Nichelle Nichols as her inspiration to become an astronaut, appeared in the 1993 episode “Second Chances” of Star Trek: The Next Generation , eight months after her actual spaceflight aboard space shuttle Endeavour. In May 2005, two other NASA astronauts, Terry W. Virts and E. Michael Fincke , appeared in “These are the Voyages…,” the final episode of the series Star Trek: Enterprise.

NASA astronaut Victor J. Glover, host of the 2016 documentary “NASA on the Edge of Forever: Science in Space.”

In the 2016 documentary “ NASA on the Edge of Forever: Science in Space ,” host NASA astronaut Victor J. Glover states, “Science and Star Trek go hand-in-hand.” The film explores how for 50 years, Star Trek influenced scientists, engineers, and even astronauts to reach beyond their potential. While the space station doesn’t speed through the galaxy like the Starship Enterprise, much of the research conducted aboard the orbiting facility can make the fiction of Star Trek come a little closer to reality. Several of the cast members from the original TV series share their viewpoints in the documentary, along with those of NASA managers and scientists. Over the years, NASA has created several videos highlighting the relationship between the agency and the Star Trek franchise. In 2016, NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden led a video tribute to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the first Star Trek episode.

In a tribute to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry on the 100th anniversary of his birth, his son Rod, upper left, hosts a virtual panel discussion about diversity and inspiration

In 2021, on the 100 th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s birth, his son Rod hosted a virtual panel discussion , introduced by NASA Administrator C. William “Bill” Nelson , about diversity and inspiration, two ideals the Star Trek creator infused into the series. Panelists included Star Trek actor Takei, Tracy D. Drain, flight systems engineer for the Europa Clipper spacecraft at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, NASA astronaut Jonny Kim , Swati Mohan, guidance and operations lead for the Mars 2020 rover at JPL, and Hortense B. Diggs, Director of the Office of Communication and Public Engagement at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The mutual attraction between NASA and Star Trek stems from, to paraphrase the opening voiceover from the TV series, that both seek to explore and discover new worlds, and to boldly go where no one has gone before. The diversity, inclusion, and inspiration involved in these endeavors ensure that they will live long and prosper.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Be Our Best Season So Far, Says Anson Mount

  • Anson Mount hails season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as the best yet, with even bigger storytelling risks and surprises.
  • Season 3 wrapped production in May 2024, with a renewal for season 4 already in the pipeline, sparking high audience anticipation.
  • Mount teases exciting developments in season 3, including bold creative choices that will surpass previous seasons.

Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, enthusiastically calls Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 "our best season so far". Strange New Worlds season 3 wrapped six months of production right before Memorial Weekend 2024. While there is no release date yet from Paramount+, Strange New Worlds received an early season 4 renewal , with production expected to start up again in Spring 2025. Meanwhile, audience anticipation is sky-high, especially after the cliffhanger ending of Strange New Worlds season 2 in August 2023.

In an interview with Gold Derby , Anson Mount discussed the success of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Season 2 of Strange New Worlds regularly charted in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, and the series hit highs with its biggest risks, a comedic crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek 's first-ever musical episode. Without divulging spoilers, Mount teased the "even bigger swings" in Strange New Worlds season 3, promising that the musical "will not be the craziest thing that we did" by the time it's over. Read Anson's quote below:

I think its not just an exciting season, I think storytelling wise, development-wise, technically; its going to be our best season so far and a lot of that has to do with even bigger swings being taken. The musical episode will not be the craziest thing that we did or we have done by the end of this. Were feeling more ownership over what it is that were doing and realizing that it continues to resonate.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with an epic cliffhanger and here's everything known about when it will be resolved in season 3.

What Could Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3's Big Swings Be?

How to they top the musical episode.

It's hard to imagine how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 can top season 2's crossover and musical, but Anson Mount believes they do. Strange New Worlds season 3 is shrouded in secrecy, but a few dollops of information have emerged. For instance, J onathan Frakes is directing an episode of Strange New Worlds season 3 that's been touted as a "Hollywood murder mystery" , which could certainly be as out-of-the-box as Strange New Worlds ' musical.

Martin Quinn is also returning as Lt. Montgomery Scott AKA Scotty in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

Strange New Worlds is also debuting a new Science Lab set on the USS Enterprise , and many of the top directors from season 2 like Frakes, Chris Fisher, Valerie Weiss, Dan Liu, and Jordan Canning, are back behind the camera for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. It's safe to assume storylines like Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) leaving the Enterprise for her archaeological medicine internship with Dr. Roger Korby , and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh's (Christina Chong) will-they-or-won't-they love story with Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) will continue. It's best to believe Anson Mount that when it comes to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, audiences haven't seen anything yet.

Star Trek Fleet Command: 2023 Roadmap Update

By Star Trek 16 December 2022

star trek june 9 2023

Commanders,

Star Trek Fleet Command has celebrated its 4th Anniversary! As we fly into 2023, it’s time to review the passing year and share some of our roadmap plans for what lies ahead. In 2022 we released four new arcs, featuring both new and classic IPs:

  • D’Vor Feesha ship
  • Treasury building
  • Cross Server Leaderboards
  • U.S.S. Cerritos ship
  • “Below Deck Officers”
  • Infinite Incursions
  • Mantis ship
  • Galaxy Tree Expansion
  • Alliance Starbase
  • U.S.S. Defiant
  • Automated Defenses
  • Armory building
  • Espionage spy event!

Overall, it was a busy year, and we look ahead for an even bigger one in 2023! To that end, it’s time to share some more details on what we have been working on and what can be expected to arrive in your quadrant next year!

As always, details are subject to change, as may the order and timing of their eventual release, but we hope you’ll be excited by this current roadmap:

Fleet Commanders

Hailing Frequencies

Galaxy chat is a great place to communicate with your fellow Commanders but have you ever wished you could hail some of those ships you meet in the vast galaxy? The Hailing Frequencies feature that will arrive early next year will include special animated emotes that you can use from your ships to communicate with other commanders in your vicinity. You can probably guess some of the obvious ideas we plan to introduce near launch

star trek june 9 2023

Game Lag/Performance

An issue this year has been the game performance/lag, especially during events like Infinite Incursions and competitive Territory Captures. Improving lag and performance is a major focus for our team, and something we have constantly been working to improve. We don’t want to introduce awesome new content and features every month if the gameplay experience for our players is suboptimal. To give you all some context, lag and performance in general are not simple things we can fix in an instant. They are complex and involve many different code paths on both the client (game app) and back-end servers. We wanted to share with you some of the improvements our dedicated engineering team has been working on and where those changes are in the pipeline (see image below). As you can see, we recently released several improvements like the revised battle engine and alliance contributions changes that had significant performance impacts plus daily reset scaling improvements that helped with the event refreshes at 9am PT.

More improvements are planned for 2023, and we hope you will start feeling a positive change in performance in the next few months.

star trek june 9 2023

Game Grind/Loops

Another topic we have been hearing from you (and especially our longer time players) is the amount of loops/grind that a Commander needs to do daily. We recognize that over the years, we have added a lot for dedicated commanders to do on a daily basis. Many ships, features, options, resources, and factions await you each day. These new gameplay features have also increased the time needed to complete daily hostiles and armadas kills. To that end, a big priority for us in 2023 is to help reduce this grind, especially for older content. This will also allow us to provide new fun and engaging content throughout the year!

2023 IP/Shows

Lastly, the arcs we have planned for next year include some fan favorite shows and movies from the Star Trek catalog, plus some new more recent ones which we are sure all fans would enjoy. We can’t share a lot of details quite yet, but the one small hint we have for the first arc in 2023 will bring back an old geometrically-obsessed enemy you faced before 😀

Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham standing on the bridge in a still from Star Trek Discovery

The week has barely started (if you’re in the U.S. and reading this on the Monday holiday: even less so!), and already there’s a whole lot of TV to get through.

With any luck, the long weekend gave you some time to catch up with things — after all, as our summer preview is any indication, there’s only gonna be even more coming soon. But while a bunch of new stuff might be coming up, there’s plenty to watch this week alone. Under the Bridge and Hacks are both wrapping up really strong seasons, while shows like Pyramid Game and We Are Lady Parts are just ramping up.

Here are all the best new TV premieres and finales this week.

New shows on Netflix

Genre: Drama miniseries Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Abi Morgan Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffmann, and more

Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a puppeteer happily living and working in 1980s New York City. Then, his 9-year-old son goes missing on the way to school, plunging Vincent into a dark, volatile depression. Vincent believes his son will come back if only he can get Eric, a monster based on a drawing his son did, to the screen.

Genre: Teen show Release date: May 30 Based on the book by: Holly Smale Cast: Emily Carey, Sarah Parish, Emmanuel Imani, and more

Harriet (Emily Carey) is just another geek trying to get by in high school, even if it means brushing off some mean girl bullies to do it. But everything changes when — against the odds and Harriet’s wishes — she finds herself scouted to be the next hot supermodel.

New shows on Hulu

The veil season finale.

Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) kneeling behind a car with a gun out

Genre: Spy thriller Release date: May 28 Showrunner/creator: Steven Knight Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Yumna Marwan, Josh Charles, and more

The stage is set in London for a deadly attack. But Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) and Adilah (Yumna Marwan) are also on the move. And with Imogen keeping her master plan secret from even us, it seems likely that this attack could go either way.

Under the Bridge finale

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in a still from Under the Bridge

Genre: True-crime mystery Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creator: Samir Mehta, Quinn Shephard Cast: Lily Gladstone, Riley Keough, and more

There’s nothing about the murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) that feels easy to swallow, and it’s a testament to Under the Bridge that the show has been able to balance the complexities of that reality in its seven episodes so far. Now, it’s coming to a close — one that no doubt will carry the weight of every ounce of tragedy in this story.

New shows on Max

Hacks season 3 finale.

Deborah (Jean Smart) sits smiling with Ava (Hannah Einbinder) on the arm of her chair in a still from Hacks

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky Cast: Hannah Einbinder, Jean Smart, and more

It’s all happening for Deborah (Jean Smart), now that she finally got her dream of hosting a late-night show. Only suddenly, there’s some last-minute doubt: Will Ava (Hannah Einbinder) be allowed to come along for the ride?

New shows on Paramount Plus

Pyramid game.

Genre: Thriller Release date: May 30, with all 10 episodes Showrunner/creator: Choi Sui Cast: Bona, Jang Da-a, Ryu Da-in, and more

Seong Su-ji is a new student at the Baekyeon Girls’ High School, and everything is already feeling like a fight for survival as she battles bullies and studies alike. And then she’s introduced to a new ranking system that lets people secretly vote for who they think should be a class outcast. Now, Su-ji has to decide whether to keep going along (and possibly accepting the violence that comes with it) or else lead an uprising against this shadowy “Pyramid Game.”

Star Trek: Discovery series finale

L-R Alfredo Narciso as Ohvahz and Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. They are wearing hand-made alien garments, and conversing calmly while sitting on the floor in a stone room.

Genre: Star Trek Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Akiva Goldsman Cast: Sonequa Martin-Green, Mary Wiseman, Doug Jones, and more

The end of an era! By which I mean not only the season we got of 900 years in Star Trek’s future, but also Discovery , which wraps up this Thursday. It’s the end of the first Star Trek show of the modern era, and is free in a way Star Trek hasn’t been in a long, long while , all while paving the way for more Trek to come.

New shows on Peacock

We are lady parts season 2.

Genre: “Yeah, I’m in a band” teen comedy Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Nida Manzoor Cast: Anjana Vasan, Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and more

We Are Lady Parts is back and ready to record their debut album. Which means it’s the perfect time for more bandmate shenanigans — including battling a rival Muslim band, playing a festival, exploring your “villain era.” All that and Malala Yousafzai is supposed to show up sometime this season!

New shows on Apple TV Plus

Loot season 2 finale.

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creators: Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard Cast: Maya Rudolph, Joel Kim Booster, Nat Faxon, and more

The Wells Foundation — and Molly (Maya Rudolph), the billionaire woman who runs it — are nearing their greatest success yet. Which, of course, means reality is about to come crashing in with some major personal decisions. How will the dust settle in the season 2 finale?

New shows on Showtime

Couples therapy season 4.

Genre: Documentary series Release date: May 31, with one episode; on-air premiere at 10 p.m. EDT on June 2 Showrunner/creator: Dr. Orna Guralnik Cast: Real-life couples in therapy

It’s a new season of Couples Therapy, and an all-new cast of couples to undergo real therapy with Dr. Orna. The result will be unpredictable — couples therapy, after all, is about figuring yourselves out together, not necessarily saving the relationship. The good news? It will most likely be cathartic, one way or another.
