Guided Day Trips from Zurich to the Alps

Anyone who visits Switzerland should not miss an excursion into the Swiss mountains. A day trip to the Jungfraujoch or Mount Titlis – surrounded by perpetual snow and ice at over 3,000 meters (9,840 ft) above sea level – is a truly breathtaking experience. On Mount Rigi, Mount Stanserhorn, and Mount Pilatus, too, on clear days visitors can delight in the magnificent panoramic views extending far beyond Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland.

The guided day trips depart from Zurich. From here, the tour bus heads towards the mountains, after which a mountain cableway or a cogwheel train will transport you in comfort up to the Alpine peaks. The full-day excursions for both individuals and private groups can be booked at the Tourist Information or online.

Swiss Alps

Discover Jungfraujoch: The Crown Jewel of the Swiss Alps

Nestled at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 feet), Jungfraujoch stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur, earning its moniker as the “Top of Europe.” As the highlight of our guided day trip from Zurich, this alpine wonderland beckons with a panorama of snow-capped peaks, pristine glaciers, and dramatic mountain landscapes.

Jungfraujoch

Sphinx Observatory: A Gateway to the Sky

Ascend to the Sphinx Observatory, perched on the Jungfraujoch summit. Here, at the highest-altitude observatory in Europe, you’ll be captivated by 360-degree views that stretch across the Swiss Plateau to the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest. Engage with the fascinating exhibits and witness the magic of the cosmos from this unparalleled vantage point.

A Panoramic Overture from Zurich to Jungfraujoch: Unveiling Nature’s Opulence

Embark on a sensory odyssey that transcends geographical boundaries as we traverse from the vibrant cityscape of Zurich to the majestic heights of Jungfraujoch. This is more than a mere voyage; it’s a grand overture where every bend in the tracks and every panoramic vista unfolds as a note in a symphony composed by nature herself.

The journey begins with the rhythmic hum of the train, a melodic prelude to the visual feast awaiting passengers. Rolling hills, emerald meadows, and charming villages set the stage for the crescendo of the Swiss Alps, where snow-capped peaks emerge as towering musicians in this alpine orchestra. The scenery, a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating a visual opulence that is uniquely Swiss.

As the train ascends through the sinuous tracks of the Jungfrau Railway, it’s not merely a means of transportation; it’s a dance with elevation, a waltz through the very veins of the mountains. The higher the ascent, the more profound the connection with the surrounding peaks, and the anticipation builds like the rising notes in a symphonic movement.

Arriving at the summit, Jungfraujoch unfolds as nature’s grand amphitheater. The air is thin, crisp, and laden with the purity that only mountain altitudes can offer. A vast panorama stretches before you, a tableau of glaciers, jagged peaks, and an endless sky that beckons you to explore the boundaries of earthly grandeur.

The Sphinx Observatory, perched at the pinnacle, becomes the maestro’s podium, offering unobstructed views of the alpine spectacle. Here, the symphony of the skies plays out in the daylight, as you stand amidst celestial wonders, humbled by the vastness of the cosmos and the beauty of our planet.

Descending into the heart of the glacier, the Ice Palace is a subterranean sonnet—a crystalline ode to the glacial forces that have shaped this landscape over millennia. Stalactites hang like chandeliers, and the intricate ice sculptures narrate a story written in frozen water. It’s an artistic expression of nature’s creative prowess, a harmonious interplay of light and ice.

Find more things to do!

A symphony of scenic wonders:.

The journey from Zurich to Jungfraujoch is a visual masterpiece, a symphony of rolling hills, emerald meadows, and charming villages that paves the way for the grandeur of the Swiss Alps. As you ascend through the Jungfrau Railway, each twist and turn in the tracks unveils a new movement in this orchestration of nature.

Jungfraujoch: The Apex of Alpine Beauty:

Arriving at Jungfraujoch, you stand at the apex of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by a panorama of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and a vast expanse that seems to touch the heavens. It’s a spectacle that goes beyond sightseeing – it’s an encounter with the sublime, an immersion into the very heart of alpine beauty.

Today is considered a rest day from the trail but is often one of the highlights of the trip. We start by taking a short private transfer to the charming village of St. Moritz. Here we catch the most historic, scenic and iconic train ride you can in the Swiss Alps on the Glacier Express. This spectacular train, known as the “world’s slowest express train,” crosses 291 bridges and passes through 91 tunnels on its way to Zermatt, the capital of Swiss mountaineering at the foot of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. We feel this is a perfect way to take a rest from the trail, but not the Alpine scenery you came for! A short walk from Zermatt Train Station will get us to our hotel for the next two evenings.

Our final day of exploration takes us high above the Zermatt Valley. We’ll start by riding a famous, historic and extremely scenic cog railway train, considered one of the 7 marvels of alpine tourism, up to its highest station at Gornergrat (10,138ft./3090m). Here the numerous surrounding peaks create an impressive 360-degree horizon of jagged rock that is a truly spectacular display of one of our planet’s finest landscapes. Our hike down is full of epic views, especially of the most iconic summit in early mountaineering history, the Matterhorn. As we hike, we pass a few clear alpine lakes with outstanding reflections of the natural world around us. Our hike ends at the Riffelalp station where we’ll ride back down to Zermatt. Our final evening will consist of one last farewell dinner; a celebration of our time together and the fond memories we’ve made experiencing the best of Switzerland’s hikes, landscapes, villages, cuisine and hospitality.

Meals: What to Expect

This Alps hiking tour features a combination of in-town meals and meals prepared by your guide. Most lunches and some breakfasts are prepared on the trail by your guides. Amazing Swiss/Italian/German meals will be had in towns! Bread, grains, pastas, rice, polenta, local cheese, and pork products are all staples in this region.

It is common in the Alps that restaurants do not allow groups to order from an a la carte menu; a set menu is created, and guests do not have the option of ordering differently from the set menu.

We can often accommodate vegan, vegetarian, kosher and non-gluten diets and make adjustments for food allergies. These and other special dietary requests may require an additional fee, and in some countries may be more difficult to accommodate than others. Please inquire with us for more information about the specific trip you’re interested in.

Lodging: What to Expect

Our trips in the Alps offer the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful lodges, inns, and chalets that European mountain villages are famous for. The historic, cultural lodging (and dining) experience of the Alps is a major highlight of these trips for many guests!

There are some unique elements to the accommodations that are important for guests to understand:

  • Some hotels do not offer ensuite rooms so bathrooms may be either shared with other guests in the hallway, or you have a private bathroom down the hallway.
  • While most hotels are considered 4-star lodges, know that certain nights we prioritized location coupled with incredible glacial valley-views. Though these accommodations have everything you need and are quite cozy, they are considered slightly more rustic than the other nights.

Please see the  Accommodations  section for more information.

Gear We Provide

We provide all group gear which includes the following:

  • Trekking poles

Travel to Zurich, Switzerland

Booking flights.

For this trip you will need to arrive in Zurich, Switzerland on the day the trip begins, no later than 12 P.M. If you would like to rest more before beginning the trek, we recommend arriving a day early and enjoying Zurich. A Wildland representative will rendezvous with you at the Zurich airport on Day 1 at approximately 1 P.M. and provide transportation to our first night’s accommodations. Departure flights can leave Zurich anytime after 3 P.M. on day 8 of the itinerary.

Flights to and from Zurich are the guest’s responsibility. Multiple airlines operate flights into Zurich from many U.S. and European international airports. Some of the primary U.S. departure cities include Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Denver, Newark, Baltimore, Washington DC, Boston, San Francisco, New York and Minneapolis. The duration of flights is 10-20 hours normally with one or two stops. Direct flights are available from some U.S. cities.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”)  have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.

Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the  EEC  and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please  contact us  prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.

The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Guide Working Parameters

Guides are required to take 8 hours off each 24-hour period to sleep, recuperate, take personal/down time…etc. In addition, as part of the 8 hours off they must sleep/rest or be in their tents/rooms  uninterrupted  for a minimum of 5 hours each night. We ask guests to respect these requirements and to not interrupt guides’ off time and sleep time unless there is a true emergency.

Age Restrictions

Age restrictions on this trip are as follows:

  • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 5 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Trip Insurance Requirements

Field evacuation, repatriation, and medical insurance is required on all Alps trips as a condition of partnership terms with our European vendors (field evacuation and repatriation minimum coverage is a combined $200,000 USD).

If you need to purchase field evacuation, repatriation, or medical insurance we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance and policies meet all Alps requirements.

For information on the recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please  click here .

For even greater information, or if you simply prefer communicating with a real, live person, feel free to contact our exclusive agent Michael Bennett. Michael will help you identify the best product for your needs, and there is no cost associated with his assistance. You may contact him at:

Email: [email protected] US by Phone: 877-305-9083 Direct/International by Phone: 702-448-3664

If you already have the required insurance or wish to purchase from anyone other than IMG/iTravelinsured, we recommend careful consultation with the provider to ensure appropriate coverage. This is because many providers have a number of policy exclusions.

Weather in the Alps

The location of the Alps and their tremendous elevation variations lead to significant and sometimes unpredictable temperatures and weather patterns, both in different ranges and in a particular range itself. Due to the Alps’ location in central Europe, they are influenced by moist air off the Atlantic, cold polar air from northern Europe, fluctuating air masses; and warm Mediterranean air flows northward.

Due to these extraordinary forces acting on the Alps’ weather, we recommend following our clothing list closely (in your trip packet when you register), as guests are best served by being prepared for a broad range of possible temperatures and weather conditions.

Located in the heart of the Roseg Valley, Hotel Restaurant Roseg Gletscher is situated just 3 kilometers from the Roseg glacier! Here you’ll find rustic Swiss accommodations with a stunning view of the Roseg Valley. Though the hotel is more rustic than our other accommodations on this trip, the location of this hotel more than makes up for it, as it sits in the middle of this remote glacial valley.

Magical and Unforgettable

This was my third and favorite trip with Wildland. I am already dreaming about the next one! Our guide, Johannes, was exceptional, the views were literally jaw dropping, and food and accommodations were top notch. We saw countless glaciers and waterfalls. The Glacier Express train was such a great break in the middle of the trip and a perfect way to see even more of the country. Opening the door onto my balcony in Zermatt and seeing the Matterhorn in perfect view while the church bells rang in the distance was pure magic; I will never forget that moment. Thank you, Wildland!

Great hiking!

This trip was amazing! The hiking views were incredible and our accommodations were great. Our guide Johannes was the best; always organized, knowledgeable, and so much fun! The train trip on the Glacier Express added to the entire experience. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who's ever wanted to really experience the Alps. It has classic Alps views, fabulous regional food, and of course great hiking!

Planning your trip to Switzerland can be overwhelming at first. With so many landmarks and cities, it can feel difficult to prioritize your must-see destinations and experiences. Here’s our guide to making the most of your trip — no matter how many days in Switzerland you have, whether its just a few days or a couple of weeks.

Switzerland in 3 or 4 days

Switzerland in 5 or 7 days, switzerland in 8-10 days, switzerland in 11-14 days, switzerland in 2 weeks or longer.

Perfect for Swiss main attractions

If you've got just 3 or 4 days to spend in Switzerland, you can still hit some of the country's most famous spots.

Start in Zurich , the largest city, and wander around the Old Town (Altstadt) with its charming mediaeval streets. While here, check out Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s exclusive shopping streets, and visit the Swiss National Museum to get a taste of the country’s history. You can also try traditional Swiss dishes like fondue and raclette in Zurich’s cosy restaurants

From Zurich, take a day trip to Lucerne . Spend a day to take a scenic boat ride on Lake Lucerne and walk across the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a stunning 14th-century wooden bridge.

You might also be able to squeeze in a trip to Rhine Falls , Europe's largest waterfall.

Perfect to add some natural highlights

With 5 to 7 days , you can dive deeper into Switzerland's landscapes.tart in Zurich, then head to Lucerne to enjoy its iconic lake and mountain views.

Spend a day in Interlaken, located between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, where you can take a train up to Jungfraujoch, known as the "Top of Europe," for incredible views of the Alps . Interlaken is also great for adventure activities like paragliding, skydiving, and hiking.

While here, don’t miss the chance to try Interlaken’s local chocolates.

You’ll also want to include a visit to the charming village of Zermatt at the base of the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic peaks in the Swiss Alps.

Here you can take the Gornergrat Railway for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Just be sure to book train tickets and adventure activities in advance, especially in peak seasons.

Perfect for an all-in Swiss itinerary

An 8 to 10-day trip lets you see a wider range of Swiss highlights. Begin in Zurich and make your way to Lucerne and Interlaken, ensuring you visit the Jungfraujoch.

From there, spend a few days in the picturesque region of the Bernese Oberland. Take a tour of the region to explore charming towns like Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. The Lauterbrunnen Valley, with its 72 waterfalls, is the perfect place for a hike.

Then head to Zermatt to admire the Matterhorn and enjoy skiing or hiking,  depending on the season.  You can continue your journey to Montreux and take a scenic train ride on the Golden Pass Line to Gstaad, known for its luxury chalets and boutiques.

Don't miss a visit to the Swiss Riviera along Lake Geneva , where you can explore Lausanne and the beautiful city of Geneva.

Perfect for to add some relaxing days

How many days do you need in Switzerland varies on the pace you like to travel, but with 11 to 14 days , you can travel at a relaxed pace and add some downtime . Follow the 8 to 10-day itinerary but take extra days to fully enjoy and take in  each location. This is ideal because you can then spend more time in the Bernese Oberland for hiking or relaxing. Maybe even take a day trip to the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps.

You might as well include a stay in one of Switzerland's famous wellness resorts, such as those in the thermal spa town of Leukerbad, where you can indulge in spa treatments and thermal baths.

Explore the Ticino region, with its Italian flair, sunny weather, and towns like Lugano and Bellinzona , known for their Mediterranean vibe and historic castles. While here, visit local markets for fresh produce and handmade goods.

Or take a leisurely cruise on one of Switzerland's many lakes, like Lake Geneva or Lake Lucerne.

Perfect for combining with Italy

If you have two weeks or more, you might want to extend your Swiss adventure with a trip to Italy .

After exploring the major Swiss highlights, such as Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt, and Geneva, you can easily cross the border into northern Italy.

It’s worth visiting the stunning lakes of Como and Maggiore , which are just a short train ride away. There are fantastic and luxurious villas and gardens that dot the shores of these lakes.

In Como, visit Villa Carlotta and its botanical garden, or take a ferry ride to the picturesque town of Bellagio. Lake Maggiore offers the beautiful Borromean Islands, particularly Isola Bella with its baroque palace and gardens.

From there, continue to the fashion capital of Milan, where you can see the iconic Duomo di Milano and visit world-class museums like the Pinacoteca di Brera. Milan also offers vibrant nightlife, excellent dining, and high-end shopping, making it a perfect conclusion to your extended European adventure.
