Help preserve the planet with these eco experiences

Enjoy a memorable Australian holiday that will also help to make the world a better place.

By Lee Atkinson

We all know the golden rule about taking only memories and leaving only footprints when we travel, but these unique Australian eco-holidays help you go one step further. Whether your passion is supporting and saving wildlife, or caring for the environment by leaving a place cleaner and greener than it was when you arrived, Australia is bursting with experiences to help preserve the planet while enjoying the best of it.

Support wildlife conservation in Victoria

Couple with a ranger feeding baby swamp wallaby at the Great Ocean Eco Lodge © Visit Victoria

Great Ocean Eco Lodge, Cape Otway, Victoria © Visit Victoria

Where: Conservation Ecology Centre, Cape Otway. A three-hour drive from Melbourne .

A new ecotourism experience at Cape Otway on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road , Wildlife Wonders is a wildlife centre with a difference. Established and operated by the Conservation Ecology Centre, this social enterprise is dedicated to monitoring, conservation, and restoration projects, with a focus on the local wildlife and fauna of the Otways forest, and creating new careers in conservation. Designed and created by Brian Massey, the landscape designer behind New Zealand’s “Hobbiton”, the visitor experience is a walk on the wild side for a great cause.

The Great Ocean Ecolodge is part of the property, and as a guest you will not only learn about the current projects – studying local quoll populations, for example – but also help out the researchers. Even better, all proceeds go directly to conservation.

  • How to experience it: While you’re there, spend time photographing threatened species with a conservation guide, as well as other unique Australian animals including the resident wild koalas, potoroos, kangaroos and bandicoots that roam the 20-hectare (50-acre) predator-free property.

Build a hiking trail in the Northern Territory

Volunteers working on maintaining the Larapinta Trail © Trek Larapinta

Trek Larapinta Volunteer Project, Larapinta Trail, Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory © Trek Larapinta

Where : Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs .

Trekking holidays, like the famous Larapinta Trail, are a great way to get back to nature while keeping fit and having fun at the same time. Helping to keep the trail in top shape while you walk ramps up the feel-good factor even higher. Join the Trek Larapinta Volunteer Project and you’ll work alongside park rangers and other land management organisations while maintaining the magnificent Red Centre trail over six days. You don’t need any special skills aside from a love of the great outdoors , with daily tasks ranging from weed control to replacing trail markers and signage, as well as sharing some amazing experiences as you learn about how these ancient places are protected.

It’s not all work though, as you’ll also get to see many of the trail’s most spectacular spots, like  Ormiston Gorge , with a wilderness guide. Stay in a private eco-campsite and enjoy meals cooked for you by friendly camp hosts. This is a holiday where you really will be leaving nothing but positive change.

  • How to experience it: The Larapinta Trail requires a moderate level of fitness. Be prepared by exercising three to four times a week for several months before your trip.

7 great holiday ideas for the conscious traveller

Save bilbies in your sleep in New South Wales

Animal view room at Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo © Taronga Zoo

Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, New South Wales © Taronga Zoo

Where: Taronga Zoo Sydney, Sydney Harbour .

You’ll be helping to save more than the cute long-eared marsupials known as bilbies when you treat yourself – or your family – to a wild luxury escape at Taronga Zoo Sydney's Wildlife Retreat. Proceeds from every stay support Taronga’s ongoing work caring for animals within its two zoos ( Taronga Zoo Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo), as well as through conservation programs around the world. Choose from lavish rooms overlooking the harbour or the Australian native wildlife sanctuary where you can watch koalas right outside your window. Or, opt for a treetop suite.

Packages include guided tours with zookeepers, three-course dinners at the onsite restaurant, and exclusive access to the sanctuary where you’ll see – and meet – koalas, echidnas, wallabies and platypus'. Plus, there’s two days’ complimentary access to Taronga Zoo Sydney. It’s the ultimate way to relax and recharge in style while contributing to conservation on a global scale.

  • How to experience it: Rise early and join the Daybreak Walk to see the zoo's furry friends wake up to a spectacular harbour sunrise.

Eradicate invasive weeds on Norfolk Island

Hundred Acres Reserve, Norfolk Island © Tourism Australia

Hundred Acres Reserve, Norfolk Island © Tourism Australia

Where: Norfolk Island, an Australian External Territory .

With its small size and remote location, sustainability is essential to maintaining the health and beauty of  Norfolk Island , and its importance is palpable when you visit. All waste that enters the island must leave the island, and most locals grow their own produce and share their bounty with neighbours. They are also extremely passionate about protecting and preserving this natural wonder – and you can help.

Join in a real  community-led initiative by helping to eradicate invasive weeds from  Hundred Acres Reserve . In rain, hail or shine, the group works methodically, selecting an area of the reserve each week in which to concentrate their efforts. You can choose to be a Cliff Hanger (comfortable on slopes) or a Flat Earther (prefer to stick to even terrain) as you spend a few hours helping to protect the biodiversity of the island.

  • How to experience it: No experience is required. Just head to Hundred Acres Reserve on Wednesday morning (between 9am and 12:30pm) and you’ll find the friendly group set up at a picnic table. They'll show you which plants to pull and chat to you about life on the island, biodiversity and native wildlife. Your hard work is rewarded with morning tea and a lovely chat with this dedicated group of nature lovers.

eco tour in australia

The Nature Bound Eco Tours partnership

Respecting australian nature, first.

Your wellbeing and that of mankind in a sustainable natural world depends primarily on how you think and how nature works. Accordingly, here is your invitation to travel with Nature Bound in a mindful eco-friendly partnership.

Our Eco Tours Commitment

Our Travel Ethic , first penned in 2003, was one of the first self-governing contributions to responsible ecotourism in Australia. Our products are officially certified through Ecotourism Australia .  This certification  ( see logo at the foot of this page ) is given to ecologically sustainable tourism companies with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that foster environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservations.

The Travel Ethic determines the ethos and conduct of each and every tour. Accordingly we:

  • support local providers of essential supply and guiding services to our tours, favouring locally owned and managed businesses. Through this we stimulate the local economy, maximise efficiencies and minimise the impact of long and carbon-intensive supply chains.
  • are forever alert to engage climate friendly businesses and green purchasing initiatives.
  • undertake to exercise minimal impact or invasion on the natural environment and communities we visit, including local and indigenous cultures.
  • seek to measure, respond and offset our carbon footprint and operate efficiently with modest infrastructure. We enjoy 100% green power energy efficiency, working by the “reduce, reuse and offset” principles. We favour environmentally responsible choices both in the office and while on tour.
  • will donate to not for profit organisations. This furthers their work in land care and all species living and depending on it.
  • engage Nature Bound staff and guides who assume the environmental conscience of each tour group. Because they are custodians of our principles and practices respecting nature’s way, they will encourage your support.
  • will comply with the requirements of those entrusted with the management of National Parks and World Heritage wilderness areas we visit.

Your Opportunity

  • Remember to research your holiday carefully, preferably on-line. Feel free to call us for accurate information and an understanding of your needs. Because smaller groups tend to have less environmental impact we can be more immersive in the experiences unfolding. Consider flying less and adventure overland to experience more with less emissions.
  • Have a read of our Travel Ethic which has determined our ethos and discipline since 2003. This serves to protect the environments we explore and enhances the collective fulfilment of fellow guests.
  • On departure for your Nature Bound Eco tour be sure to turn off any energy wasting services in your home.
  • It’s best to pack light and bring only what you need. Utilise re-usable bags and avoid the disposing of plastic.
  • Consider the green-pathway leading to our tour through the choice of eco-friendly hotels and other travel services. Remember to offset your flight emissions by choosing a participating airline.
  • While on tour we ask you to be water wise, to consider recycling your towels. Where possible, bring your own natural biodegradable toiletries.
  • Don’t forget to close off air-conditioning and lighting when you’re not occupying accommodations.
  • Be sure to bring and use refillable water bottles. Remember a 1 litre bottle of water purchased requires 3 litres of water to create.

Think Local

  • Take an interest in everything local as we are guests of each community, some as few as 4 people in remote areas. People full of life and character. Empower the “local” through a mutual exchange of interest.
  • Consider supporting local artisans and enterprises if purchasing a memento of your visit. You can assist by avoiding products which serve to diminish or threaten the habitats and species you set out to enjoy.
  • Extend respect to our First Peoples , their culture, wisdom and place. It is important to seek advice if you are unsure of how to respond.
  • Be open minded and share in group discussion – as this can be self educating.
  • Above all, take the opportunity to slow down for a while, immerse and connect “one with nature”.
  • “Evolutionary history suggests we thrive in the presence of nature and suffer in its absence”

We welcome your feedback , so we may improve our best practices in sustainable travel and celebrate our guest’s fulfilment.

The best eco experiences with ecotourism australia.

eco tour in australia

A few weeks ago, when I was asked what I thought the best ecotourism experiences in Australia were, I will admit to being totally flummoxed. There are so many amazing things to do, places to go and stay in the country that I found it almost impossible to pin down ‘the best’. And my idea of the best may not be the same as someone else’s.

There are a growing number of websites where you can search for eco holidays. A few I recommend – and sites I scour often for my own travels – are Book Different , Book Greener and Ecobnb . Greenloons is a great site too, especially for those Stateside, and Responsible Travel and Greentraveller are two favourite UK-based sites. But for Australians, Ecotourism Australia is a particularly good resource as their list of members is available to the public so you can find all accredited accommodations and activities on the same site.

Ecotourism Australia is a not-for-profit organisation focused on inspiring environmentally sustainable and culturally responsible tourism. They work closely with members to ensure the main principles of ecotourism are followed by all listed businesses, so you know that you’re getting the real deal when you opt to use one of the companies. And the inclusion criteria are pretty stringent. Basically, you’ve got to be good to get in.

The calibre of companies represented is evident in their efforts at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards earlier in 2016. The Australian Tourism Awards were created in 1985 to recognize and promote excellence in tourism, with more than 200 businesses competing for gold. Ecotourism Australia had 38 members represented. Of the finalists, 35% were Ecotourism Australia members, with 27% winning Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.

The winners of the Gold Awards represented five of the competition categories. They were Tourist Attraction, Ecotourism, Cultural Tourism, Adventure Tourism and Unique Accommodation.

These gold award winners are a good representation of the type of ecotourism activities available in Australia. If you’re looking for the best ecotourism experiences down under, these are a pretty good start.

Bruny Island Cruises – Tasmania

Tasmanian walking company – tasmania.

The Tasmanian Walking Company , winner of the 2015 gold award for Ecotourism, achieved their Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation in 2013 and leads in best environmental practices. Multi-day walks offer guests modest luxury and a chance to connect to the natural environment. The Cradle Mountain Huts Walk is a six-day walk along the Overland Track and has operated for 25 years. The Bay of Fires Lodge was designed for minimal environmental impact with breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea. The Wineglass Bay Sail Walk offers experiences at the best Tasmanian National Parks by foot while staying aboard the luxurious Lady Eugenie.

Venture North Australia – Northern Territory

Venture North Australia received the gold award for Cultural Tourism and holds certification in Advanced Ecotourism and Respecting Our Culture. This family-owned company specializes in small-group cultural and nature tours in northern Australia including Arnhem Land, Kakadu and Kimberly. The company employs expert guides with knowledge of the local culture and environment. Special permits allow access to of the beaten track areas and unique experiences.

Enchanted Adventure Garden – Victoria

Taronga western plains zoo – new south wales.

Congratulations to all the winners and to Ecotourism Australia.

If you’d like to find out more about other experiences listed with Ecotourism Australia, you can search the site via states or the type of experience you’re seeking. They also have a great Green Travel Guide you can download for FREE.

Australia Ecotourism: The Top 5 Things to Do for Nature Lovers

Great Barrier Reef by Toby Hudson, via Creative Commons

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial policies .

I’ve been fascinated by Australia ever since I was a teenager.

From the music (Midnight Oil, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, didgeridoo virtuoso Alan Dargin) to TV ( The Crocodile Hunter ) and films ( Mad Max, Rabbit Proof Fence , etc.), everything about the “Land Down Under” appealed to me.

Unfortunately, we’ve never gotten the chance to visit. So when we were researching this story, we contacted our friends Caz Makepeace (of yTravelBlog ) and Natasha von Geldern (of World Wandering Kiwi ) for advice on their favorite Australia Ecotourism attractions.

We’re starting to plan our 2013 travels now, and we’ve got half a mind to head to Australia , rent a car, and do a massive road trip in order to see them all in one fell swoop!

The Great Barrier Reef, one of our Top 5 Australia Ecotourism Attractions

SNORKEL/DIVE THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

Any discussion of Australia ecotourism HAS to begin with the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system and widely considered one of our planet’s greatest natural wonders.

Comprised of nearly 3,000 reefs and 900 islands, the 133,000-sq mile ecosystem supports an astonishing array of marine life.

Aquatic animals you may see during a snorkel or dive there include 30 species of cetaceans, more than 1,500 species of fish, six species of sea turtles , around 125 species of sharks and stingrays, and nearly 5,000 species of mollusks.

But the Coral Sea isn’t the only part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides a haven for wildlife .

The mangroves and salt marshes on the Queensland coast are fertile breeding grounds for saltwater crocodiles and frogs. And around 1.5 million birds (215 species) use the area’s islands to nest or roost. So, naturally, the Great Barrier Reef ranks high on our list of must-see destinations!

Aboriginal Rock Art, Ubirr Art Site, Kakadu National Park

EMBRACE ABORIGINAL CULTURE AT KAKADU NATIONAL PARK

Located in Australia’s wild, rugged Northern Territory, Kakadu National Park covers more than 7,600 square miles of land.

Its boundaries encompass four major river systems (primarily the Alligator River), estuaries, floodplains, lowlands, southern hills and basins, and the stone country. There’s also an immense variety of wildlife (including 60 mammal species and over 280 bird species).

But Kakadu is best known for its Aboriginal people, who have lived there for 20,000-40,000 years. As a result, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is rich with indigenous culture, including more than 5,000 recorded art sites boasting remarkable works like the one pictured above.

Thankfully, most of Kakadu’s land is being given back to its rightful owners under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act of 1976 , with around 500 Aboriginal people living in the park.

So not only is Kakadu rich with biodiversity as a result of environmental conservation efforts, but it also offers rich cultural opportunities as well.

Daintree Rainforest with Bushwalker, Queensland

HIKE IN THE DAINTREE RAINFOREST

When most people think of the continent’s natural beauty, “rainforest” is probably not the first ecosystem that comes to mind. But all our Aussie friends suggest this is one of the most amazing things to do in Australia.

Daintree, part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland UNESCO World Heritage Site , offers approximately 1000 square miles of tropical rainforest right on the continent’s northeast coast.

The scenery looks like something out of Jurassic Park , with rugged mountain peaks, waterfalls, white sand beaches, pristine forests and valleys, all filled with ancient plants that include some of the earliest known to man.

The area contains 65% of Australia’s bat and butterfly species; 30% of the frog, reptile and marsupial species (including the rare Bennett’s tree kangaroo); and 18% of the bird species.

Daintree has been designated an “Important Bird Area” by BirdLife International  because it supports a population of increasingly rare Southern Cassowaries, as well as other endemic species such as Lovely Fairywrens, White-streaked Honeyeaters, Mountain Thornbills, Pied Monarchs, Victoria’s Riflebirds and Pale-yellow Robins.

Swamp Wallaby, Kakadu, Australia by JJRon

WATCH WILDLIFE ON FRASER ISLAND

Located along Queensland’s southern coast about 120 miles north of Brisbane, Fraser Island is considered the largest sand island in the world.

It’s easy to understand why this this UNESCO World Heritage Site has become a hit among vacationing families and backpackers alike.

With over 100 pristine freshwater lakes (including the popular Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby), rainforests, mangrove forests, postcard-worthy beaches, and picturesque colored sand cliff formations (including Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedrals and Red Canyon), there’s an array of different ecosystems to explore.

There’s a diverse variety of wildlife, including mammals such as swamp wallabies, sugar gliders and flying foxes. There’s also 74 different species of reptiles, including saltwater crocodiles; 350 species of birds; and marine life such as cetaceans, tiger sharks, and dugongs.

It’s also home to one of the last remaining pure populations of dingoes in Eastern Australia .

MARVEL AT THE SUNSET IN ULURU

Considered sacred by the Aṉangu (the Aboriginal people who live in the area), Uluru – formerly known as Ayers Rock– is a massive sandstone rock formation located in the southern part of Australia’s Northern territory.

Part of Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park, the UNESCO World Heritage Site has been the subject of numerous controversies, particularly over the name and the tourist tradition of climbing the rock. The Aṉangu discourage this practice due to Uluru’s spiritual significance to their culture, and there have been dozens of deaths there due to the high winds at the top.

But there are plenty of other activities and attractions in the park to keep responsible travelers busy. There are 27 mammal species, including the Red Kangaroo; birds such as Bush Turkey and Emu; and 73 reptile species, including the Sand Goanna and Perentie.

There are also myriad springs, waterholes and rock caves surrounding the famous mountain, some of which feature ancient petroglyphs dating back thousands of years. It’s no wonder so many travelers consider visiting Uluru one of the most memorable things to do in Australia .

Just don’t try to take any of Uluru’s rocks home as souvenirs. Locals believe that doing so will bring great misfortune, and many travelers have attempted to mail them back in an effort to remove “the curse.”   –Bret Love

The 10 Best Ecotourism Experiences in The Great Barrier Reef

Breathtaking Heron Island Resort

It’s well-known around the world that the Great Barrier Reef is currently under threat from factors such as climate change, coastal development, poor water quality, and overfishing. The best thing visitors can do when exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site is to focus on ecotourism. From eco resorts to eco tour companies, these are the best ecotourism options you can experience on the Great Barrier Reef.

1. pumpkin island.

Located 14 kilometres (9 miles) off the coast of Yeppoon in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Pumpkin Island is a remote eco-friendly island resort surrounded by brilliant marine life. The island is privately-owned and has five self-contained beach cottages. Its eco initiatives include solar and wind power for electricity, filtered rainwater for drinking, and solar-powered gas hot water systems. Pumpkin Island is Australia’s first and only carbon positive inhabited island, and amazingly offsets 150% of its annual carbon emissions. If you want to live like a celebrity for a weekend, there’s the option of renting the entire island too.

Ocean Safari

Cape Tribulation is known for being a gateway to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Ocean Safari is Advanced Ecotourism Certified, and Global Sustainable Tourism Council-approved. The company does half-day snorkelling tours to Mackay and Undine Reefs, which are only a 25-minute boat ride off the coast. Visitors can snorkel alongside sea turtles, eagle rays, and an array of tropical fish.

As the leading Great Barrier Reef tourism company, Quicksilver Group experiences include Outer Barrier Reef and island adventures, snorkelling day trips, and premier liveaboard dive boat trips. It has also been certified as a Climate Action Innovator, which means Quicksilver Group is proactively reducing its emissions and auditing its carbon footprint.

2. Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort

Resort, Eco Hotel

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort and its surrounding reef is located in a Great Barrier Reef protected Green Zone, which means it’s home to an abundance of marine life. This includes green sea turtles and manta rays. Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort says its goal is for guests to take home more than photos and memories, but a willingness to join in the fight “for conservation and sustainable management of our environment and natural resources.” The eco resort also hopes to be 100% sustainable by 2020.

3. Heron Island Resort

Heron Island Resort

Heron Island Resort is an eco-friendly and remote slice of tropical paradise on the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a guests-only island, with television-free rooms and no mobile phone reception. Guests can step off the beach and go snorkelling, or check out one of the 20 dive sites surrounding Heron Island. Turtles return annually to lay their eggs, and whales can be spotted from the shores in June. As well as being an Advanced Ecotourism Certified resort, the Heron Island Research Station is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest island-based research station. Guests can visit for a daily tour, where they can get up close to many reef animals.

Whitsunday Rent a Yacht

Whitsunday Rent a Yacht is fully committed to sustainable tourism and providing its customers with the best ecotourism experience in the Whitsundays . Their entire fleet of yachts, catamarans, and motor cruisers have ecotourism reference materials on board, which includes a Marine Park zoning map, safe snorkelling and fishing guide, walking track information, and factsheets on marine species and public moorings and anchoring.

Green Island

Green Island is located off the coast of Cairns. Green Island Resort is one of the world’s most eco-sensitive. It received its Advanced Ecotourism Certification “for preservation and commitment to the island’s rain forest and reef surrounds.” The island is surrounded by shallow reef, so you can step off the shoreline and snorkel immediately on the Great Barrier Reef. Alternatively, Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises is an eco-certified company that offers several Green Island day trip options from Cairns.

4. Lizard Island Resort

Lizard Island Resort is fully committed to “protecting, nurturing and maintaining the critical balance between the resort and the diverse ecosystem of Lizard Island and its surrounding waters.” The remote resort is only accessible via a one-hour flight from Cairns. With 24 maximum guests at any time, this is definitely the most luxurious ecotourism experience on the Great Barrier Reef. Guests can go snorkelling off the shore or visit Cod Hole, a world-renowned dive site where divers can swim beside curious potato cods.

Reef Magic Cruises

Reef Magic Cruises is passionate about reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, and encouraging their customers to tackle climate change as well. From Cairns, they offer a day trip to Marine World, a platform located on the Great Barrier Reef. At Marine World, activity options include snorkelling, fish feeding with a marine biologist, glass bottom boat tours, scuba diving, helmet diving, and even scenic reef helicopter flights. Unique Ecotours that You Can Only Experience in Australia

Australia has long been known as a top tourism destination for keen travelers and wanderers. However, as more people become conscious of the environmental impact of travel, the ‘Lucky Country’ has established itself as a leader for ecotours, and only looks to continue its commitment to green tours and sustainable practice in the future.

In particular, the practice of ‘edu-tourism’ has been a focus of the government regarding sustainable tours in Australia. By educating and informing travelers and locals, the pristine beauty of Australia’s unique biospheres can be as protected as they are appreciated.

Ecotours in Australia

Ecotourism Australia describes ecotourism as ‘ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation.’

Australia’s unique environment and climate mean that it is one of the most biodiverse nations on Earth. Around 93 percent of Australia’s reptile, amphibian, and plant life is endemic; with rare flowering plants, sprawling deserts, and beautiful marine parks, travelers are guaranteed a unique experience during their eco-tours adventure.

Home to some of the most beautiful untouched wilderness in the world, ecotours are fast becoming the greatest way to embrace Australia while preserving the environment for future generations. No matter your personal preference, there are eco-tourism activities to suit every taste and budget.

Sustainable tours are one of the best ways to get involved with the culture and natural beauty of the great Down Under. Here are three of the best green tours in Australia for you to get involved with during your visit.

Tall-ship sailing in the Whitsundays

eco tour in australia

Located in far north Queensland, the Whitsundays is one of the most breathtaking coastal locations Australia offers and is home to plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. Six out of the world’s seven turtle species can be found in these picturesque inlets, and birds of prey like osprey, black-bellied hawks, and brahminy kites soar high above the turquoise water.

Take a step back in time and sail through the Whitsundays on a classic clipper ship with Australian Tall Ships Sailing . This silver-certified ecotourism company gives guests the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Australia’s natural beauty while learning about traditional sailing techniques used by European settlers.

Australian Tall Ships Sailing is a proud partner of the Whitsundays Reef Education Program, and is an Ecotourism Australia Green Leader for sustainable tours. However, the far north of Australia is prone to tropical cyclones between May and October, so make sure to visit outside these months for the best experience.

Witness the jumping crocodiles in Darwin

eco tour in australia

Prized and hunted by the fashion industry for their uniquely patterned skin, Australia’s crocodile population was decimated almost to the point of extinction until the mid-20 th century. In 1971, they were granted protected conservation status, and slowly but surely returned to their pre-First Fleet levels in the Adelaide River.

Located 40 minutes out of Darwin, Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruises gives travellers the chance to get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. Knowledgeable guides talk you through the history of the area and the background of some of the regular crocs as they feed them. You can witness firsthand the size and power of this protected species during this green tour, as they jump up to eight feet out of the water!

Ecotourism Australia-certified, Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruises operate all year-round, and are a fantastic way to learn more about Australia’s delicate ecosystem. While you can see these creatures any time, it’s important to note that Darwin is incredibly hot and humid between October and March – make sure you’re prepared for the heat!

Take a camel ride in Alice Springs

eco tour in australia

One thing that many people don’t realize about Australia is that it has the largest wild camel population in the world! First introduced from the Canary Islands in 1840, there are over one million camels living across Central Australia and the Victoria River District.

Made popular by Broome’s Cable Beach, camel rides are one of Australia’s most unique ecotours for travellers. Pyndan Camel Tracks is a self-sustaining farm that focuses on the part that these beautiful animals play in the ecosystem and allows visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the Australian outback.

Created to leave minimal impact on the environment, these camel rides showcase Australia’s native flora and fauna, and connect travelers to the land as they move through it. Camel wool from this eco-tours adventure company is donated to local Aboriginal artists, and the manure is sold to support sustainable tourism for the future.

Pyndan Camel Tracks is Green Leader Certified by Ecotourism Australia and operates all year round for those interested in sustainable tours of Australia’s great Red Centre.

Consider an ecotour in Australia!

These are just three unique ecotours available to travelers looking to explore Australia. If you want to learn more about the beautiful country, why not add one of these green tours to your itinerary? Fun, educational, and above all sustainable, these tours are perfect for immersing yourself in Australia’s culture while contributing to environmental well-being.
