Eidfjord, Norway

In the shadow of snowy peaks and near stunning blue-green fjords, Eidfjord is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages in Norway.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini, the jewel in the crown of Greece's Cyclades, is best known as the island with the giant volcanic caldera at its heart.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Rome is both a modern bustling city and an ancient open-air museum. You can walk in the footsteps of emperors, have coffee in Renaissance piazzas and see contemporary art all in one afternoon.

Barcelona, Spain

On the northeast coast of Spain, overlooking the Mediterranean, Barcelona is a vibrant port city, packed with centuries of iconic art and architecture—Gaudí and Picasso both called it home—and lined with sunny white-sand beaches. Explore the Catalan capital.

Istanbul, Turkey

Arriving in Istanbul by ship is unforgettable. Take in views of Istanbul’s best attractions—the shores of Asia to the east, the first Bosphorus Bridge to the north, and the “old Istanbul” to the south.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 9, 2024) – Princess Cruises is going big in Europe for 2026. The “Love Boat” line today announced that its 2026 European cruise and cruisetour season will be its biggest ever, with five Princess cruise ships sailing the region, including the sensational new Sun Princess. Set to sail on a record-breaking 222 cruises, guests will have unparalleled opportunities to explore the beauty and diversity of Europe.

Running March through November 2026, the European season features 59 unique itineraries, visiting 101 destinations across 29 countries, ranging from five to 42 nights. Highlights of the upcoming season include an opportunity to experience the 2026 total solar eclipse; sail on the newest Princess ship – Sun Princess; the return of roundtrip cruises from Copenhagen and new itineraries from Rome. The robust season goes on sale May 23, 2024.

“There’s incredible demand for European vacations and we don’t see that slowing down anytime soon,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises. “Guests should book early as our best pricing will be when these cruises first go on sale. Our 2026 season delivers the best of Europe with incredible voyages visiting a mix of marquee ports, as well as smaller, off-the-beaten-path spots offering guests their very own personalized journey.”

2026 Europe Highlights

Sun Princess , the next-level Love Boat from Princess, will sail 7-, 14- and 21-night Mediterranean voyages departing from Civitavecchia (Rome), Piraeus (Athens), and Barcelona. Guests on a 14- and 21-night voyage can enjoy an itinerary without calling to the same port twice for a Grand Mediterranean Adventure .

  • Itinerary Sample: A seven-night Mediterranean voyage sails roundtrip from Piraeus (Athens) to Barcelona, calling at Santorini, Kotor, Corfu, and Messina (Sicily).

The newest Princess ship is a true engineering marvel, offering an extraordinary cruise experience with not-to-be-missed culinary, entertainment and luxury accommodations. Sun Princess debuts new eye-catching experience venues including The Dome, a groundbreaking geodesic, glass-enclosed structure at the top of the ship inspired by the terraces of Santorini. The outward and suspended Sphere Atrium, the namesake of this new class of ship, takes the central Piazza hub of the ship into a new dimension. With 30 inviting restaurant and bar venues with an unprecedented collection of celebrity collaborators, high-end ingredients and culinary experiences, Sun Princess has something for every guest to love.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise. (Once you've chosen your cruise, check out our definitive cruise packing guide .)

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

The 10 Best Places to Travel in August

By Caitlin Morton

best places to travel in august Viewing tower at Angama Amboseli Kenya

Summer is at its peak, temperatures are high, and back-to-school season is looming on the periphery. The best places to travel in August represent that universal desire to jettison all 9-to-5 obligations and indulge in an epic trip —the kind you’ve been dreaming about for years (or longer).

Whether you’re exploring the northern stretches of Quebec, following the Great Migration in Kenya, or partying it up at some of the Caribbean’s best festivals , this month is the time to loosen your purse strings and your inhibitions. (If you don’t want to loosen anything too much, we have plenty of excellent domestic destinations as well.) To help you squeeze in that one final summer vacation before Labor Day, here are 10 of the best places to travel in August.

This article has been updated since its original publish date.

Câmara de Lobos Madeira Portugal

Madeira, Portugal

This island, 300 miles west of Morocco, is synonymous with winemaking and wine drinking. The Madeira Wine Festival (August 25 through September 15) showcases how the islanders developed the unique oxidation process to create their trademark wine six centuries ago.

There are events and celebrations throughout the island, but be sure to visit Cabo Girão, where the microclimate around the cliffs allowed Jesuits to cultivate malvasia grapes and develop the sweet malmsey wine. The vertigo-inducing skywalk here is the highest such installation in Europe, though it’s best to try it before imbibing too much.

best places to travel in august Viewing tower at Angama Amboseli Kenya

The Great Migration is one of the awe-inspiring natural spectacles on the planet, marking the season when more than 1.5 million wildebeest sweep through East Africa between July and October every year. In Kenya, the best place to watch the phenomenon is the Masai Mara National Reserve, with ample rivers (that’s where the real action takes place) and cliffs overlooking the savannah.

Set up shop at one of Angama Amboseli ’s 10 tented suites, all of which afford direct views of Kilimanjaro. The Hot List-winning property is more known for migrating elephants rather than wildebeest, but you can join game drives to spot other wildlife such as giraffes, warthogs, and big cats—then head back for a massage and soak in the infinity pool.

Woodstock Vermont

Woodstock, Vermont

One of the most beautiful towns in America, Woodstock’s appeal extends far beyond fall foliage and craft beer. The city oozes New England charm in any season, which is clearly evidenced by the lovely and quaint Woodstock Inn & Resort . The 142-room hotel thrives in the summer, when the on-site garden boasts more than 200 varieties of produce that get sent directly to the property’s two restaurants.

And the seasonal delights don’t end there. Just down the road at the Billings Farm & Museum, the 20,000-square-foot Sunflower House will enter its sixth year in bloom this summer. Thousands of sunflowers (which reach peak bloom in mid-August) will be planted in a maze-like structure, ranging in height from 18 inches to a staggering 14 feet.

Six Senses La Sagesse Grenada

While people have historically overlooked Grenada in favor of its Lesser Antilles sisters, we have a feeling that’s about to change. (We did name the island one of the best places to visit in 2024 , after all.) A lot of the uptick in interest has to do with convenience: JetBlue launched direct flights from Boston to Grenada in late 2023 (joining the existing nonstops out of JFK), and Air Canada now has up to four flights per week between Toronto and Maurice Bishop International Airport.

Once you’ve completed your delightfully easy flight, you’ll wonder why you’ve waited until now to visit—those white-sand beaches, waterfalls, and invariably green landscapes can turn anyone into an immediate devotee. Book a stay at the newly opened Six Senses La Sagesse , where every room has a private pool and the two-floor spa overlooks a lagoon. Then head out to participate in Grenada’s famous Spicemas festival (August 1-13). The Spice Island comes alive with parades, food, dancing, and performances, and you’d be remiss not to catch at least a few days of the party.

minnesota state fair

Summer is the season of state fairs, and few states do the tradition justice better than Minnesota. The nation’s second-largest fair (after Texas, of course) features epic events to match its size: outdoor beer festivals, classic car shows, Blake Shelton and Ludacris concerts, and 500 food stands serving up all things deep-fried and skewered.

The fair takes place from August 22 to September 2 this year, giving you plenty of August wiggle room to explore nearby Minneapolis (about 15 minutes away from the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights), a city that only gets more interesting the longer you stay there.

The largest of Canadas 10 provinces—another one of our best places to visit in 2024—has so much more to offer beyond...

Gyrfalcon Islands, Canada

The largest of Canada’s 10 provinces—another one of our best places to visit in 2024 —has so much more to offer beyond Quebec City (though we’d never completely bypass the city on any trip above the border). Quebec’s northernmost region of Nunavik doesn’t typically appear on most travelers’ wish lists, but the homeland of Inuit people has some new bookable experiences that promise cultural immersion with a touch of extra convenience.

Ungava Polar Eco-Tours, an Inuit-owned tour operator, has officially started offering five-day trips to the Gyrfalcon Islands—an uninhabited archipelago in Ungava Bay. You can book five-night itineraries from August 3 and beyond, all of which provide front-row seats to the region’s most fascinating sights: Marvel at the 55-foot-high tides of Ungava Bay, hop on a boat to spot polar bears and hairy muskoxen, explore the islands’ terrain on an ATV tour, and—if you’re lucky—watch the northern lights as you sip warm drinks around the fire.

costa smeralda sardinia italy

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is one of Europe’s most glamorous summer getaways, with stunning white sands and yacht-crammed waters off Porto Cervo. Lean into the luxe vibe by booking one of the suites at the Hotel Cala di Volpe —and remember to pack the kind of bikinis that were never designed to actually get wet for its ultra-exclusive beach club.

The suites, decked out in whitewashed walls and Sardinian marble floors, are perfect for kicking your feet up between pool visits. At night, book dinner at one of the restaurants on Porto Cervo’s beloved Piazzetta—choose between the classic fish spot, Il Pescatore, or Novikov, an Asian fusion restaurant from owner and Russian restaurateur Arkady.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley

Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is one of the best places to travel in August, corresponding with the region's harvest season (August through October). The crowds tend to be a bit denser during this time, but you can still have a luxurious, intimate vacation—if you know where to look. Start by setting your sights on the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley , the only Napa property that sits on an active winery. After a morning at the spa, you can walk to your afternoon wine tasting—no wine bus or private driver required.

For a not-so-average tasting experience, book The Legacy Tour onboard the Napa Wine Train. Expect sparkling wine samples, a three-hour tour of the valley, and a four-course gourmet meal.

Camp Sarika Amangiri Utah

Utah is renowned for its national parks (its state parks are pretty spectacular, too), but there are plenty of reasons to visit this summer outside of the obvious draws. Get your dose of thrills with an ATV ride around the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, with 2,000 acres of sand that turn pink as the sun begins to set. Or choose from ten ziplines (one of which reaches a speed of 65 mph) at Deer Creek State Park.

If you prefer to watch the action from the sidelines, watch drivers try to break world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Bonneville Speed Week (August 3-9). Whatever type of activity you crave, Utah probably has it somewhere. While you're in the state, you might as well make a point to stay at the sensational Amangiri resort in Canyon Point: The remote location, food, views, and spa treatments are well worth a detour.

isla holbox mexico

Isla Holbox, Mexico

May through September is whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean, when the magnificent beasts emerge in the warm waters between Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy every year. August is a particularly great month for whale sightings due to the amount of plankton in the water, which the whales gather to feed on.

This year, head to dreamy Isla Holbox to celebrate Whale Shark Day on August 30—no better time to try your hand at a once-in-a-lifetime whale shark dive. Eco-boutique hotel Las Nubes de Holbox is the only hotel adjacent to the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and connects its guests to sustainable whale shark tours around the island’s stunning natural landscapes. Afterward, relax at the Orquídea Spa with a salt bath or facial with organic Mexican products.
