S club 7 reunited tour setlist 2023: what songs can we expect.

While we obviously don’t know details of the group’s upcoming tour setlist, we’re certain you can expect all the hits (and a few surprises). Let’s remind ourselves of S Club’s Bring It All Back 2015 tour setlist:

Bring The House Down

S club party, you’re my number one, love ain’t gonna wait for you, two in a million, stronger (tina barrett solo), reach (acoustic) (paul cattermole solo), straight up (paul abdul cover) (hannah spearritt solo), hello friend (jon lee and jo o’meara duet), have you ever, good times/friday night/dance dance dance/do it ‘till we drop/who do you think you are (bradley mcintosh dj set), some girls/sweet dreams my la ex (rachel stevens solo), viva la fiesta, bring it all back, uptown funk (mark ronson and bruno mars cover), say goodbye, never had a dream come true, don’t stop movin’, watch our exclusive chat with s club 7’s jo, tina and rachel below:.

Will S Club 7 release new music in 2023?

Asked if we can expect some new S Club tunes on the BRITs red carpet, Jo said: "Wait till Monday!"

Then, at the group's press conference hosted by BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills, Jon said: "It's something we have spoken about and something we'd all definitely be up for, but at the moment we're just seeing how the tour goes."

Will S Club Juniors be going on tour with S Club 7 as support act?

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted that the official S Club 7 Instagram account follows only Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, the band members and S Club Juniors ’ Frankie Bridge, Rochelle Humes, Aaron Renfree, Calvin Goldspink, Jay Perry, Hannah Richings, Stacey Franks and Daisy Shelvey.

Why’s that, then?

Speaking to us on the BRITs red carpet, the group said: “We’re all S Clubbers, aren’t we? You’ve got to have the S!”

Interesting...

At the group's press conference, Jo addressed speculation saying: "We're [keeping it] open. It'd be lovely to get somebody who's not done it before; somebody new and fresh. It'd be nice to open up a career to somebody else, but you never know."

When did S Club 7 last reunite?

In November 2014, the group reformed to announce a twelve-date 2015 UK arena. The band also reissued their Best: The Greatest Hits of S Club 7 collection with a previously-unreleased fan favourite track, Rain.

Who'll be musical director on S Club 7's 2023 arena tour?

It looks like Simon Ellis - BRIT Award-winning producer and the man behind the group's Bring It All Back 2015 tour arrangements - will return for the band's '23 shows.

Will S Club 7's TV series - Miami 7, LA 7 and more - be available on streaming?

When we asked the group if we can expect their shows on streaming, Jon assured us: "That's something we're talking about and looking into what platform it's going to go on. It's something that will almost definitely be happening. You can only get it on VHS at the moment, that's how old we are!"

More information as we get it, S Clubbers.

Formed in 1998 by pop svengali Simon Fuller, S Club 7 went on to become one of the U.K.’s biggest pop bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Along the way, the seven-strong act landed four U.K. No. 1 singles (“Bring It All Back,” “Never Had A Dream Come True,” “Don’t Stop Movin’” and “Have You Ever”) and a No. 1 album with 2000’s 7 .

Fans will remember that they also starred on the family sitcom  Miami 7/S Club 7 in Miami,  about seven friends who relocate to Miami in search of fame, playing exaggerated versions of their own personalities. (The show aired on ABC Family in the United States.)

The group disbanded in 2003, with Stevens going on to enjoy a high-profile pop career in her homeland, bagging five top 10 singles, including No. 2s for “Sweet Dreams My LA Ex” (2003) and “Some Girls” (2004).

Then, in 2014 , the singers joined forces once more to perform for the BBC Children In Need appeal. The reunion gathered pace when a U.K. tour was booked the following year.

More on the 2023 tour will be revealed at a press conference Tuesday morning (Feb. 14), streamed live on Instagram and YouTube.

Children of the Nineties are collectively rejoicing as S Club 7 have announced plans to reunite for a national tour.

Made up of Tina Barrett, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole, Hannah Spearritt , Bradley McIntosh, Rachel Stevens and Jo O’Meara, S Club 7 is known for high-energy tunes such as “S Club Party” and “Don’t Stop Movin’”.

S Club 7 announce reunion tour to celebrate 25th anniversary

  • Entertainment
  • Tuesday 14 February 2023 at 4:37pm

s club tour liverpool

The iconic band's reunion tour kicks off in October, ITV News' Pablo Taylor reports

S Club 7 hailed a "special thing" as they announced they are reuniting for a UK tour later this year in celebration of their 25th anniversary.

The seven-piece pop group were originally created by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller in 1998 and produced hits including Reach, Don’t Stop Movin’ and their debut Bring It All Back.

In 2003 they disbanded but briefly came back together in 2014 to perform a medley of their best-known songs for the BBC Children In Need appeal.

Their new UK and Ireland arena reunion tour will see all the original seven members – Rachel Stevens, Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt, Jo O’Meara, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole and Tina Barrett – back on the road together.

Stevens said it is a “special thing” to be bringing back the group’s “joyful and positive” lyrics to a new generation given the “world right now”.

Group member Barrett, joked the S Club babies could be the tour’s support act, said: “My six-year-old loves (the S Club 7 song) Reach. He learned it at school and he does the dance routine and everything. It’s just the cutest.”

During a press conference in London hosted by radio DJ Scott Mills, 44-year-old Stevens added: “I think it was a resounding yes from everyone. I think everyone is in such a brilliant place.

“I think where we are in the world right now, we just want to get up there and bring some joy and positivity."

When asked what her two children thought when seeing footage of her performing in the band, she said: “(They think I’m) just so uncool.

“Actually, on the way to school one day I remember Don’t Stop Movin’ came on and they were so excited, they were like ‘wind down the windows’.”

They will open their 11-date tour on October 13 in Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena before continuing to cities including Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester.

The O2 in London will be the last stop on the tour on October 28.

The dates are as follows:

13 October – Liverpool, M&S Bank Arena

14 October – Sheffield, Utilita Arena

16 October – Dublin, 3Arena

18 October – Glasgow, OVO Hydro

19 October – Newcastle, Utilita Arena

20 October – Leeds, First Direct Arena

21 October – Manchester, AO Arena

23 October – Cardiff, International Arena

24 October – Nottingham, Motorpoint Arena

26 October - Birmingham, Utilia Arena

28 October - London, The O2

The group confirmed everyone had immediately agreed to reunite as it “felt like the right time” for them.

They said they were most excited to perform their hit Reach on the tour but added that they were open to fans contacting them through social media to request what songs they would like to hear during the shows.

During their five years together they produced four studio albums with their debut, S Club, launching in 1999.

They followed this up with the chart-topper 7 in 2000, Sunshine in 2001 and Seeing Double in 2002.

The group also achieved number one status on a number of tracks including Never Had A Dream Come True and Have You Ever. They also cemented their fame after starring in their own BBC TV series Miami 7 and LA 7.

After they called it a day, band members went on to explore other pursuits, with Stevens launching a solo music career and competing on Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing On Ice.

Spearritt became a TV actress, with roles in shows such as ITV’s Primeval, and Lee has performed in West End shows including Les Miserables and Jersey Boys.

McIntosh, O’Meara and Cattermole later became members of the spin-off group S Club Allstars, previously S Club 3, with Barrett joining them in 2014.

O’Meara, who also released solo music and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007, has gone through a number of back operations in recent years.

Liverpool FC and Taylor Swift helped me to find my future wife and now we’re seeing her at Anfield

“And isn’t it just so pretty to think all along there was some invisible string tying you to me.” - Invisible String, Taylor Swift

When I first started writing about Liverpool, I didn’t think I’d ever pen what is essentially a love story. But then my love story would not have been possible without writing about Liverpool .

Perhaps it would have been possible without Taylor Swift, but she also plays a surprisingly prominent role in the most unlikely of tales. And when she comes to Liverpool to perform at Anfield shortly, I will be attending with my fiancée, Alice, in what will be a perfect full-circle moment.

Alice and I met online. But while any stigma around that has started to melt away, this was not the increasingly prevalent dating app romance. We met on another app: Twitter, as it was then called.

READ MORE: Liverpool issues Taylor Swift update ahead of Eras Tour gigs at Anfield

READ MORE: Full list of banned items for Taylor Swift at Anfield

In a wholly uncharacteristic move, I ‘slid into the DMs’, so to speak, after Alice had tweeted about a rough day. This was the height of the pandemic, and she was a key worker in the NHS.

I still can’t entirely explain what made me do it, although I could hardly fail to notice that she was very attractive — I’d like to think my motives were pure at that point, as I let her know she could always reach out, although it’s not as though I was playing the role of Good Samaritan to everyone I vaguely knew on the internet.

We had interacted on Twitter before, with Liverpool Football Club at the heart of our few brief exchanges. She had read some of the things I had written, which was why she had followed me in the first place, and we’d had a good-natured disagreement about the legacy Philippe Coutinho left behind when he forced a move to Barcelona.

That grounding made conversation easy once we got chatting more regularly. Alice introduced me to a game where we used Taylor Swift lyrics to sum up Liverpool performances — I offered ‘in my defense I have none’ as injuries took hold in Jürgen Klopp’s back line that season!

There was no need for me to furiously listen to Swift’s back catalog in order to participate. As it happened, this was another shared love of ours.

We spoke more about that, and stumbled upon an unlikely coincidence. At that point, Alice and I were living at different ends of the country, in Durham and Maidenhead (no, not the place in Kent, that’s Maidstone) respectively. Yet in 2015, both of us had been to the same Taylor Swift show in London, both going with our sisters to watch a leg of the 1989 Tour in Hyde Park.

Little did I know that five-and-a-half years, a law degree and a journalism course later, I would be travelling up four hours on the train to meet someone who had been in that crowd. We danced in the kitchen to Taylor Swift and I didn’t go home for three days.

That this extended stay had been planned in advance spoke to our confidence. We had been talking every day for more than a year by then, and we knew that once we let something start, it would be the real thing.

And as friendship turned into something undeniably more than that, we looked back on those previous Twitter exchanges almost as though they were historical artefacts, the earliest evidence of something that would become life-changing.

Sifting through those, it came to light that there had been another extraordinary coincidence. Aside from debates about Coutinho, we had spoken in 2017 about a seemingly unremarkable match, a relatively routine 3-0 win at Anfield over Huddersfield Town. The topic of conversation? Our respective views of the action, at a game we had both attended.

For some, this might not be so astounding. But while both of us are avid Liverpool fans, neither of us have been able to get tickets with any real regularity, least of all to Premier League games. And yet by some twist of fate, this — in a way — was our first match together.

We’ve since been fortunate enough to attend a number of games ‘properly’ together — we’ve been something of a good luck charm, as it happens, with Liverpool winning every time, culminating in the most special of days at Wembley for the League Cup final, where we watched Jürgen Klopp win his last ever trophy at the club. It’s hard not to feel as though someone has been smiling down on us.

At this point, at least if you’re anything like us, you’ll probably have been doing some mental maths about the timeline of this relationship. A first message during the pandemic, and now we’re engaged?

I suppose it was quite quick, but that’s what happens when your first date comes after a year of getting to know each other, watching shows together every night and sharing every detail of each other’s lives. I moved in after just under a year, and I proposed a little over six months after that.

The setting was the Lake District, immortalized in Taylor Swift lyrics — not a specific choice, but another piece in the tapestry all the same. Who ever thought Liverpool, an American singer and an aspiring sports writer would become so deeply intertwined?

So when Swift announced that Anfield would be one of the venues for the Eras Tour, we knew we had to be there. As luck would have it, there was a specific route to tickets through being Liverpool members, a perk to which I admit we felt almost uniquely entitled.

And so, in a few days’ time, we will take up a spot not far away from where I watched the Huddersfield game, oblivious to the fact that my future wife was elsewhere in the ground. And in a few months, we will walk down the aisle to the sound of Taylor Swift.

Taylor, I know you’ve got another leg of the Eras Tour scheduled for the wedding day. But Jürgen, as for you, I’ve just got one question: do you want the roast chicken or the salmon?

Why Taylor Swift wanted Anfield for Eras Tour gig with Liverpool to make millions

Taylor Swift kicks off her three nights at Liverpool's Anfield home next Thursday

Taylor Swift will perform at Anfield in 2024

A week today (June 13) will see the biggest music artist in the world right now take to the stage at one of football’s most iconic stadiums.

Taylor Swift kicks off the first of three consecutive sell-out nights at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium as she embarks on the UK leg of her Eras Tour, which has already broken records to make it the highest-grossing music tour of all time, surpassing Elton John’s marathon five-year farewell show which ended last year.

Anfield is the only club football stadium in the UK that Swift is using for her tour, arriving in a city with a deep and rich musical heritage to play at a venue which will be more intimate than others on the UK list.

READ MORE: Liverpool confirm first transfer exit under Arne Slot

Swift will be playing at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, before dates at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, Wembley, and Dublin’s Aviva Stadium follow on from the three nights at Anfield.

Anfield has been chosen as the venue for the north of England, with its selection showcasing the additional value that has been created by redeveloping a world-class stadium in the city, adding tens of millions each summer through the hosting of live music events, which return this summer after a hiatus last year due to the ongoing redevelopment of the Anfield Road End.

The stadium, offering a more intimate experience for artists due to the close proximity to the stands, is something that has already been a proven winner for Tottenham Hotspur, who hosted Beyonce’s tour last summer, with Liverpool set to benefit to a similar degree.

Last year, one of the world’s biggest musical artists, Beyonce, played five nights at Spurs’ home. It was, before Swift’s tour surpassed it in December, part of the highest-grossing tour for a female artist in history. The sell-out nights were a huge success and showcased what Spurs’ home had to offer away from football, with such success ultimately aiding the club’s bottom line and its ability to invest into the product that goes on the pitch.

But given all the options for artists: Why Spurs? Is there enough to go around? "It’s a really competitive market," said Donna-Marie Cullen, executive director at Spurs, speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London earlier this year, where The ECHO were present.

"Venues tend to have their own sweet spot. So, Wembley, if you are Taylor Swift you know that you will sell out two nights, so you’ll probably do Wembley. Beyonce probably could’ve done that but she preferred to do five nights, she preferred the more intimate setting that our stadium gives.

"In fact, that turned out to be the highest-grossing concert ever for any female artist. She made £42.5m for five nights at the stadium. Then you get something like the O2, which is a much smaller venue. It depends on the artist, it depends what environment they are looking for, and what crowds. Whether they want to do multiple evenings or whether they want to do one night.”

It turned out that Swift, who already had Wembley on the calendar for three nights, chose to add an additional date for Liverpool having initially planned to do two.

For Liverpool it is more money into the coffers, while it is additional exposure for the club and the venue to potentially new audiences which could be hugely valuable in terms of growing the brand and revenue streams.

Liverpool are allowed to stage up to six non-football events at Anfield per season per an agreement with Liverpool City Council. Hosting concerts during the closed season are valuable to Liverpool, worth millions to the club when all is said and done. They aren't easy to put a price on, however, as the nature of concerts means the actual value of what the club can receive can even change on the night, as ticket and commercial sales are all considered and the numbers run by promoters and Liverpool staff during the event itself. At the end a figure is reached and then divided up as agreed.

Over the course of the three nights, the Reds will likely stand to make between £5m and £10m from hosting the concerts, with more to come from the dates when Pink performs later this month, with the residual impact and potential leverage that it will give the club moving forward providing an additional positive impact on the bottom line. Hosting top-level artists like Swift can also be a huge pull for commercial partners, some of who may pay extra to be able to access hospitality for the event to entertain their own clients in executive suites.

The money will tot up through various elements, with the promoters, AEG, paying Liverpool a hire fee for the use of the stadium, with the club to get a cut of merchandise and food sales, totted up throughout the evenings. In the case of Spurs last year, the club were able to also take a cut of the sale of premium seats when Beyonce performed her five-night stint.

For Liverpool, Anfield remains an asset, one that offers something unique to the biggest artists in the world in an iconic city that is known the world over for its contribution to music. It is something that the club can leverage, and in an era when raising revenues through new levers is vital in order to combat financial controls and re-invest to a greater extent on the pitch, the Eras Tour is the latest piece of the puzzle to grow the club.

Retracing the Beatles' steps in Liverpool is the highlight of this British Isles cruise

s club tour liverpool

LIVERPOOL, England – Sixty-four years ago the Beatles embarked on a long and winding road toward international superstardom, ultimately becoming what many consider to be the most influential, culturally significant and celebrated band in pop-music history.

All these decades later, Beatlemania has barely missed a beat.

Nowhere is this more apparent than this city on the River Mersey in northwest England, where John, Paul, George and Ringo were born, raised and played their first gigs together.

The Beatles’ far-reaching and colorful legacy is one of the main reasons Liverpool attracts more than a million tourists each year – double the city’s population. According to a government report, Beatles-related tourism to Liverpool brings in more than $150 million annually and supports 2,500 jobs.

I recently joined the throng of nostalgia-hungry Beatles fans during a visit to Liverpool, a port stop midway through a two-week cruise around the British Isles on the 2,668-passenger Holland America Rotterdam.

Day-tripper: Seeing the Beatles sites in Liverpool in 1 day

Unfortunately, I had to cram all of my Beatles sightseeing — including visits to two museums and venues where the group honed their musicianship and the places that inspired some of their songs — into just one jam-packed day before our ship set sail for Wales.

Yes, to borrow the words of Lennon and McCartney, I was a day-tripper.

I was on a sold-out tour with 43 fellow cruise-ship passengers called “In the Footsteps of the Fab Four.” The excursion was led by John Bruce, a Liverpool musician and guide who proudly noted that he was born in the same hospital as John Lennon.

“She’s got a ticket to ride,” he quipped as a woman boarded the bus at the start of the tour. It was the first in a day full of references to Beatles songs and amusing — and sometimes poignant — stories.

John Lennon's orange glasses and the famous bronze statue of the Fab 4

We started on Liverpool’s waterfront at the Royal Albert Dock, a mid-19th-century complex of dock buildings and warehouses that also houses several museums, hotels, bars and restaurants.

At the dock a sign in front of the popular Beatles Story museum beckoned us inside to learn “the story of the band that changed the world.” It features re-creations of key locations and events in the band’s career and includes fascinating pieces of original memorabilia. There are sections on each band member’s solo career following the group’s breakup in 1970.

It was especially moving to see John Lennon’s iconic orange-tinted spectacles, which he was wearing when he wrote the 1971 song “Imagine.” Lennon was fatally shot outside his New York City apartment nine years later.

Two blocks away is the most popular selfie spot in Liverpool: a bronze statue of the Beatles, inspired by a 1963 photo of the group strolling along the River Mersey. The statue was unveiled in 2015 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the Beatles' last performance in Liverpool.

Exploring the Cavern Club and other Beatles haunts on Mathew Street

Many of Liverpool’s must-see sites related to the Beatles are clustered on Mathew Street, less than a mile east of the Beatles statue. You’ll know you’re in the vicinity when you pass the Hard Days Night Hotel, the Hey Jude Hair and Beauty Salon and the Rubber Soul bar.

Mathew Street is home to the legendary Cavern Club, where the Beatles played an astonishing 292 times between 1961 and 1963 when they surged to prominence on the Liverpool music scene.

The original Cavern Club was demolished in 1973 but reopened 10 years later at a spot 20 yards down the block, using the same dimensions and many of the club’s original bricks. The Cavern Club still hosts live music; McCartney performed there as recently as 2018.

Across the street is a statue of a young John Lennon and the Wall of Fame, which showcases 58 records from Liverpool-based artists that reached No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart. Besides the Beatles, Liverpool has produced numerous other hitmakers, including Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Searchers and Cilla Black, who once worked as a hat-check girl at the Cavern.

The Liverpool Beatles Museum, another attraction on Mathew Street, has more than 1,000 items of Beatles memorabilia displayed on three floors. I especially enjoyed seeing two of the original seats from Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a landmark concert in 1965 in front of 55,000 screaming fans. The museum is owned by the family of Pete Best, the Beatles’ original drummer who was fired by the group in 1962 and replaced with Ringo Starr.

Seeing Penny Lane and Strawberry Field in south Liverpool

After visiting Mathew Street, we drove through south Liverpool and passed by the Beatles’ childhood homes and schools. We stopped at Penny Lane, which Paul McCartney immortalized in a 1967 song that was a tribute to his Liverpool upbringing. Over the years, Beatles fans have pilfered so many of the Penny Lane street signs that the city has had to affix them to metal posts.

We also stopped at the entrance to Strawberry Field — formerly the site of a Salvation Army children's home — where John Lennon played as a child. It inspired him to write the 1967 song “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

Bruce, who has been leading Beatles tours for six years, played the two songs over the bus’s sound system — along with his own recording of “Let it Be” — while he offered his interpretation of the songs' meaning.

“I’m a musician and I have a passion for the Beatles,” he says. “When you reveal the reasons about why they wrote some of their songs, it’s incredible. Sometimes I’ve had people at Penny Lane with big tears in their eyes because it means so much to them.”

British Isles cruise on the Holland America Rotterdam

The cruise started and ended in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where the Holland America line was founded 151 years ago. The Rotterdam ship, which took its maiden voyage in 2021, is the newest addition to Holland America’s fleet of 11 ships.

Our sailing was close to capacity, with more than 2,600 passengers, about half of whom were Americans. There was also a large contingent of Dutch passengers; all of the ship’s announcements were made in both English and Dutch. Cruises to the British Isles typically run from late April through October.

We stopped in 10 ports over the course of two weeks in such places as Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency that was the birthplace of another famous pop group, the Bee Gees.

But it was Liverpool — and my pilgrimage to trace the footsteps of a group that produced so much groundbreaking and enduring music — that I’ll remember the most.

Fittingly, as our bus returned to the cruise pier at the end of the tour, Bruce ended his commentary with yet one more reference to a popular Beatles song.

“Congratulations,” he told us. “You’ve just spent a day in the life of the Fab Four.”

Indeed, the Dutchman has big boots to fill, with Klopp having won almost every trophy available in his nine-year spell at Anfield, including the Champions League in 2019 and the club’s first Premier League in 30 years the following season.

And among his first jobs will be to appease the wishes of Reds shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher, should reports that he is keen to join a Premier League club this summer be believed.

Football Insider has claimed Kelleher is planning to push for a move away from Anfield, with the 25-year-old keen to become the number-one shot-stopper elsewhere.

Celtic are said to be interested in the Ireland international upon the retirement of Joe Hart, however, the publication has said the Parkhead club will find it hard to meet Liverpool’s valuation of Kelleher.

And Football Insider has added that Kelleher is prioritising a move within the Premier League after impressing during his opportunities at Liverpool.

The shot-stopper made 26 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool in the 2023-24 campaign, including ten games in the Premier League upon Allison Becker’s injury.

Kelleher kept five clean sheets and conceded 32 goals in those outings.

The Cork-born star joined Liverpool from Ringmahon in 2015 and has risen through the youth ranks to be the backup to Alisson. He is under contract at Anfield until June 2026.

Confirmed: PGA Tour and PIF to meet in person in New York on Friday afternoon — and why John Henry’s role is critical

One day after the one-year anniversary of the PGA-Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announcing the Framework Agreement, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods are leading a group that is meeting in person with the PIF’s governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan on Friday afternoon in New York.

Speaking to a handful of reporters, including Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig on Thursday , Rory McIlroy, who was named to the Tour’s Transaction Subcommittee a few weeks ago, confirmed he would be part of the meeting, joining remotely via video conference following his second round of the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.

McIlroy said the group has talked three times a week with the Saudis. The New York meeting represents their first in-person gathering since March. The other members of the committee are Adam Scott, board liaison Joe Ogilvie, Enterprises chairman Joe Gorder and Fenway Sports Group principal John Henry.

“There’s going to be people in that room on the PGA Tour side who are going to take the lead,” McIlroy told a handful of reporters after his round. “And it’s not going to be Adam, Tiger or I. It’s going to be the business guys. We’re there to maybe give a perspective from a player’s point of view.

“This is a negotiation about an investment in the PGA Tour Enterprises, this is big-boy stuff. And I’ll certainly be doing more listening than I will be doing talking.”

Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool Football Club and Pittsburgh Penguins, is one of the leaders of the ‘big-boy stuff.’ In an engaging profile of Henry, the Financial Times includes the story of how Strategic Sports Group, which already has invested $1.5 billion in PGA Tour Enterprises and potentially as much as $3 billion, came to be.

A year ago in June, a week after the blockbuster news of the PGA Tour-Saudi PIF’s framework agreement and intention to create a new for-profit company, Henry was in New York to attend a routine meeting of baseball owners.

“Henry couldn’t understand how it had come to this. Why was golf, the most well-heeled of elite sports, so desperate for financial salvation that it would merge with its ideological and marketplace opposite?” Sara Germano writes on FT.com . “Seated in a midtown skyscraper with a half-dozen of his fellow billionaires — all men, all American — at the MLB meeting, he saw a group of like-minded titans. Couldn’t they come up with an alternative plan for the PGA Tour, he wondered. Henry started asking around the room: would you put up some funds to invest in golf? How about you? To others present for the meeting, golf was the last thing they thought Henry would be interested in. “He has a lot of hobbies, but that’s not one of them,” recalled Sam Kennedy, chief executive of FSG and one of Henry’s closest associates for more than two decades. But Henry wasn’t making a passion play. He had seen a problem and was in a roomful of people with the means to fix it.”

According to the Financial Times, the baseball owner’s meeting became the launch pad of SSG, a consortium of American businessmen whose portfolios include all manner of global sports. As Arthur Blank, owner of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and PGA Tour Superstore, told FT.com, Henry’s pitch went like this: “the world of golf was in “turmoil,” and would he have any interest in joining an optional financial lifeline to the PGA Tour, either instead of or in addition to the PIF merger?

Blank was among those owners, which also include NY Mets owner, Steve Cohen, who signed up. “We saw it as doing the right thing, as leading American businessmen,” Blank told Germano.

On the morning of Nov. 9, she reported that Woods invited the prospective investors to his oceanside offices in Jupiter, Florida.

“According to people who were present, Woods was joined by fellow players Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay, as well as the Raine Group’s Colin Neville, along with various staff. Several other players tuned in via Zoom. The SSG delegation consisted of Henry, his wife Linda, FSG executives Tom Werner and Sam Kennedy, Blank and Andy Cohen of Steve Cohen’s Private Ventures, among others.”

This paragraph from the Henry profile may give a clue to his role in Friday’s meeting: “Despite his reputation, Henry was anything but reticent that morning. ‘John probably repeated 10 times, ‘We want to be aligned with the players’,” one person who was present told Germano. “It left a good impression with the golfers, and SSG went back to their offices to polish the finer points of their proposal.”

Less than a week ago, Scott told Golfweek that negotiations were about to heat up and that appears to be true.
