Mens Safari Shirts Read our Mens Safari Shirts Advice Guide
The advice below is a summary . If you are looking for more information & expert advice then please click here for our full safari shirt advice guide .
- Pack men's safari shirts which are made from neutral, natural tones such as shades of khaki, green, and brown.
- We suggest you pack more men's safari shirts which are long-sleeved safari shirts with roll-up sleeve tabs over short-sleeved shirts - simply as you are able to roll your sleeves up and down when you need to stay cool, keep warm, or to avoid sunburn on your arms.
- Pack men's safari shirts which offer a combination of effective wicking, sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and proven insect defence.
- As a general rule, men's safari shirts made from man-made fibres (e.g. polyamide) are superior to natural fibres such as cotton as they wick moisture away from the skin much faster than cotton shirts. Faster wicking means faster cooling. This is particularly important for any long-sleeved or collared shirt.
- Pack men's safari shirts which have a collar to protect your neck from the sun.
Number of men's safari shirts to pack: Up to 4-day safari: x 2; Up to 8-day safari: x 4; Up to 12-day safari: x 6

- You absolutely do need a men's safari jacket or men's safari fleece on any safari - whether you opt for a long-sleeved safari fleece or jacket or a safari fleece vest - as it does get cold on safari.
- The reasons for the cold include: African winters, wind chill on safaris in open 4x4s (dipping into valleys and drainage lines also adds an extra bite of cold), early morning starts and late evening finishes for safari activities, land-locked countries, and many safari areas being high above sea level. The Maasai Mara & Serengeti (and most of East Africa) are the height of some ski resorts at 1,400 meters above sea level. Botswana, parts of Zambia, and Namibia are also more or less 1,000 meters above sea level.
- Think of the safari experience as a desert trip where it starts off cold in the mornings and becomes cold again in the evenings, but heating up by midday to warm or hot. Keep in mind that the hotter the temperatures are at midday, the earlier you will go on safari, which means the cooler it will be. Again, you should definitely pack a men's safari fleece or men's safari jacket for your safari. We have given this advice to clients who have ignored it and returned from an October safari in Botswana to tell us that, yes, they did indeed get cold despite the midday heat.
- For the African winter, opt for a long-sleeved safari jacket or safari fleece and, for the summer, either a safari vest jacket or fleece, but then wear a long-sleeved safari shirt underneath so that the sleeves help to keep you warm.
- Colour is still key when choosing the correct safari fleece or safari jacket. Opt for neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown.
- For safari travel over the rainy season, pack a high quality, waterproof safari jacket which is proven to actually work. For East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda), the rains generally occur in two parts: the longer monsoon in April and May and then the shorter rains around November. Higher safari areas such as the Ngorongoro Crater catch the wind from the sea and it may rain at any time of the year. Southern Tanzania differs from this and is similar to the rainy season in Zambia, Botswana, and northern Mozambique - and falls between late November and late March, often extending into April. As a general rule, if one had to ask "when is Africa always dry?" - the answer would be May to October, with regional rains still possible in some parts. Please also note that the South African rainy season is split down the middle of the country, with the east receiving rain through summer and the west a winter rainfall area. That winter rainfall can push through in cold fronts to the east of the country too.
- Having lived in Africa through the rains we are also able to advise that the daytime temperature goes from very hot before the rains start, to much cooler once the rains have settled in. The difference may be as much as 10 to 15 degrees celsius below the average temperatures and so again we advise that a fleece or jacket is packed to keep you warm.
Number of men's safari jackets or safari fleeces to pack for your safari: 1 x safari fleece or jacket; 1 x waterproof safari jacket should you be travelling over the rainy season.
Men's SafariElite Bonded Safari Fleece in Safari Sage

- If you are going on a classic game drive type of safari, then pack comfortable men's safari shoes to wear on game drive but which are able to double as good walking shoes for a walk in the bush - an activity we highly recommend. Note that if you do not have walking shoes with you on game drive then your guide may decide against a quick impromptu walk in the bush
- Also take a pair of men's safari shoes to wear around the camp. These may be the same pair as your select for the above, but it may also be a pair of cooler sandals or open shoes.
- For full-on walking safaris make sure you take men's safari shoes which are made for longer hikes - and ensure that you walk them in properly before you go on safari. You may prefer low rise canvas trail shoes or leather higher rise boots - the preference is purely personal.
- If you are going on a walking safari in sandy areas (check with the walking safari company you have booked with) then we suggest that you pack higher rise boots with a built in tongue - such as our Rufiji™ APU Safari Combat Boots - as this will minimise the amount of sand which goes into the shoe which will cause discomfort.
- We would still take a a pair of cooler men's shoes or sandals for before and after walks when around the camp.
- Safari tip: always check your shoes for small snakes, scorpions, spiders and insects before putting them on.
Rufiji™ Explorer Safari Veldskoen Shoes in Ruaha Rust
Rufiji™ explorer safari veldskoen shoes in kalahari khaki, rufiji™ apu combat safari boots in wildebeest brown, the buffalo boot in buffalo brown, veldskoen desert safari boots in khaki, mens safari hats read our mens safari hats advice guide.
The advice below is a summary . If you are looking for more information & expert advice then please click here for our full safari hat advice guide .
- To prevent having your face and neck burnt by the sun during your safari activities, you will need a wide-brimmed men's safari hat.
- With mean high temperatures reaching mid-20 to mid-30 degrees Celsius on most safaris and with safari areas in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia high above sea level, the effects of the sun will be pronounced and the risk of being burnt by the sun will be high. As a wide-brimmed men's safari hat sits on your head, it is literally your first line of defence against a hot midday African sun.
- Another benefit of wide-brimmed men's safari hats which most people don't think about is the shelter they provide when it rains. We find that a wide-brimmed safari hat definitely makes it slightly less uncomfortable when you are caught out on a walk or game drive by a sudden thunderstorm or tropical shower, as at least your face - or most of it - remains dry.
- Colour is key when choosing a men's safari hat - with neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown the best. Your safari hat will often be the most conspicuous part of you as you hide behind a bush while viewing wildlife on a walk.
- Modern wide-brimmed men's safari hats are conveniently packable too and so do not lose their shape when you take them out of your luggage. If they have lost a bit of shape, you are usually easily able to manipulate them back into shape. However, never crush your safari hat under a hard object - such as shoes or binoculars - when packing.
Number of wide-brimmed men's safari hats to pack for your safari: 1 x wide-brimmed safari hat per person. *Pack a safari beanie for the African winter too.
Men's Explorer Canvas Safari Hat (Adjustable) in Meerkat
Men's explorer canvas safari hat (adjustable) in khaki, men's explorer leather safari hat (adjustable) in driftwood, adventurer hat in khaki, adventurer hat in olive, removable, adjustable chin strap for hats in olive, men's panama safari hat (adjustable) in tawny, squashy leather oiled safari hat in dark brown, foldaway leather suede safari hat in hickory, foldaway bronco full grain leather safari hat in dark brown, barmah hats waterproofing and conditioning spray – 150ml pump spray (suitable for leather & suede), mens safari trousers & shorts read our mens safari trousers & shorts advice guide.
- Pack men's safari trousers which are made in safari-suitable colours. These are ideally shades of khaki, brown, and green.
- The men's safari trousers go-to product will always be zip-off or convertible men's safari trousers and pants. These are designed for maximum versatility no matter the conditions on safari: trousers when cool, shorts when hot - and they save on valuable packing space by being two garments in one. The leg sections also give added protection from the sun and defence from most biting insects - especially when treated with built-in SPF and anti-insect treatment. For walking safaris, having separate waterproof leg sections for your men's safari pants which provide insect defence work the best.
- Should you prefer to also pack separate men's safari trousers and men's safari shorts, then make sure you work out the duration of your activity and wear either trousers or the shorts depending on the weather during that activity. There is no use starting off warm with men's safari trousers when its cold in the morning only to be boiling hot later on in the day. Another option if you prefer separate safari trousers and safari shorts would be to take shorts or trousers with you on the safari activity in a satchel or daypack and change while on the activity.
- The ideal men's safari trousers and shorts are lightweight, strong, provide a high level of sun protection (SPF50+ is recommended), and have an anti-insect finish. Wicking is less important from a sweat and cooling point of view, as your legs don't sweat as much as your upper body, but wicking would be important in ensuring that, should your safari trousers get wet from the rain or a water-based activity - or even just the morning dew while walking - that they dry very quickly.
- Men's safari trousers which are made from man-made fibres (such as polyamide) are preferable to those made from natural fibres (such as cotton) for their moisture wicking properties, ensuring that you stay cool and dry on safari.
Number of men's safari trousers and shorts to pack for your safari: Up to 4-day safari: x 2 (1+1); Up to 8-day safari: x 3 (2+1); Up to 12-day safari: x 4 (2+2) We have shown the number of men's safari trouser zip-offs/convertibles as the first number - "x 3"- and the men's safari trousers plus men's safari shorts combination in brackets - e.g. (2+1). Always make sure that you pack the total number whether you opt for safari zip-offs, safari trousers, or safari shorts, but always have a combination of safari shorts and trousers. As an example, for an 8-day safari, you could take one pair of zip-offs, one pair of trousers, and one pair of shorts - or 3 pairs of zip-offs, or two pairs of shorts and one pair of trousers - or vice versa.

- Walking in the bush while on safari is the quintessential experience. We recommend it to all who go to Africa.
- Whether you go for a short nature walk with your guide or a multi-day walking safari, please ensure that you pack safari-coloured safari socks which offer a double layer for blister protection. Bad blisters ruin good walks.
- Pack ankle gaiters if you prefer further protection for your ankles and socks.
Number of blister-proof socks to pack for your safari: Up to 4-day safari: x 2; Up to 8-day safari: x 3; Up to 12-day safari: x 4.
Mara&Meru Ultimate Anti-Blister Socks (Active, Everyday, Safari) in Olive Green

- Pack a multi-functional Head&Neck scarf for just about all outdoor adventures, including safari. Head&Neck Scarves keep your neck and head out of the sun when it is hot, and provide an element of warmth too when it starts to get cold. They offer maximum versatility.
- Following on from our advice for safari fleeces and safari jackets, you need to pack garments and accessories for your safari which keep you warm. Therefore, woollen men's safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves should be considered a packing essential over the African winter - and for some mornings through summer in Africa too. For more details on when and why Africa gets cold, please view the men's safari jacket and fleeces page.
- At the very least we recommend packing a safari beanie on any safari as they are so small and light to carry in your luggage, yet have a big effect on how warm you are should you get cold. Keep your safari beanie in the bag you take on game drives - you may well get some envious stares from others who have not had the foresight to pack a safari beanie.
- Further to the point above, for the African summer pack a men's safari beanie just in case. For the most part your men's wide-brimmed safari hat should keep you warm enough, but why take the risk? Please do take note too of the altitude of the area in which you are going on safari. The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, as an example, is over 2000 metres above sea level and most camps are on the rim of the crater and so may have cold temperatures (morning and evenings in particular) and precipitation throughout the year and we would recommend taking warmer safari accessories just in case.
- Pack safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves in safari colours.
Number of men's safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves to pack for your safari: 1 x men's safari scarf; 1 x men's safari beanie; 1 x men's safari gloves - although you should be fine tucking your hands into your men's safari jacket or fleece to keep them warm.

Privacy is built in.
Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.
Intelligent Tracking Prevention
Safari stops trackers in their tracks.
What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.
Privacy Report
Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click the Privacy Report button in your toolbar for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.
Customization
Putting the you in url..
Safari is more customizable than ever. Organize your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favorite features — like Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.
Save and organize your tabs in the way that works best for you. Name your Tab Groups, edit them, and switch among them across devices. You can also share Tab Groups — making planning your next family trip or group project easier and more collaborative.
Safari Extensions add functionality to your browser to help you explore the web the way you want. Find and add your favorite extensions in the dedicated Safari category on the App Store.
Smart Tools
Designed to help your work flow..
Built-in tools create a browsing experience that’s far more immersive, intuitive, and immediate. Get detailed information about a subject in a photo with just a click, select text within any image, instantly translate an entire web page, and quickly take notes wherever you are on a site — without having to switch apps.
Notes is your go-to app to capture any thought. And with the new Quick Note feature, you can instantly jot down ideas as you browse websites without having to leave Safari.
Translation
Translate entire web pages between 18 languages with a single click. You can also translate text in images and paused video without leaving Safari.
Interact with text in any image on the web using functions like copy and paste, lookup, and translate. 7
Visual Look Up
Quickly learn more about landmarks, works of art, breeds of dogs, and more with only a photo or an image you find online. 8 And easily lift the subject of an image from Safari, remove its background, and paste it into Messages, Notes, or other apps.
Surf safe and sound.
Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.
Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.
Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.
Learn more about passkeys
Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.
With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.
Same Safari. Different device.
Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.
When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.
Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.
iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.
Designed for developers.
Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Ventura includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.
Make Safari your default browser

Apple Retail
Revisit the world’s first apple store as it appeared 20 years ago with augmented reality.
On May 19, 2001, Apple opened its first two retail stores in Tysons Corner, Virginia and Glendale, California. Now you can revisit the world’s first Apple Store exactly as it appeared twenty years ago on grand opening day through an interactive augmented reality experience.
🎈 This is part three of a four-part series celebrating twenty years of Apple Stores. Read more feature stories and special content at the links below.
- 20 years of Apple Stores: The enduring art of celebration
- 20 years of Apple Stores in 20 quotes
- Before the Genius Bar: Behind the retail designs that paved the way for 20 years of Apple Stores
Ahead of its grand opening, Steve Jobs recorded a video tour of the first* Apple Store, walking through the aisles of Apple Tysons Corner.
The augmented reality model below represents a painstaking reconstruction of that original store, from the number and color of Macs on each table to the third-party software titles on the shelves. Artwork on the walls and window displays are true to the era. The model is designed to be as accurate as possible within the parameters of available information.
Tap on the button below in Safari on an iPhone or iPad to launch the model (17MB) and tap “View” when prompted. Place the model on a table to explore in as much detail as you’d like, and learn more about the store design below.
Optimized for A12 and newer devices .
Beyond a black stainless steel entry bordered by glowing Apple logos, early Apple Stores were organized into eight distinct sections labeled by backlit signs on the ceiling: home, pro, music, movies, kids, photo, genius bar, and etc. Sections were divided by pinstripe glass partitions that resembled the original Aqua interface in Mac OS X.
Instead of large wooden tables and stone floors, Macs were displayed on white Corian tables shaped like kidney beans. Merchandising in each section of the store highlighted solutions and products that worked great with Mac OS X, like digital cameras, camcorders, and MP3 players. How do I edit photos from my digital camera on a Mac? How can I create a home movie in iMovie? What software is available for kids?
The etc. section housed accessories like printers, keyboards, and cables, and the Genius Bar was located in the corner, not centered at the back like in later Apple Stores.
More than three hundred third-party boxed software titles were arranged on two rows of black shelving spanning from a checkout kiosk near the front of the store to the Theater in the back. In the Theater, Apple hosted Workshops, software demos, and sometimes iTunes visualizers on a 10-foot projection screen. Larger stores often welcomed musicians and creative experts to the Theater for live events.
Cupertino Calling
“If that person doesn’t know the answer, they’ve got a hotline to call us in Cupertino at Apple headquarters, where we have somebody who does.”
When Steve Jobs introduced the Genius Bar, he picked up a classic red rotary phone on the back counter. All of the earliest Apple Stores were outfit with a similar red phone, ready and waiting as a lifeline for Geniuses with a vexing technical issue.
You won’t find a Cupertino hotline in today’s Apple Stores, but using the augmented reality model above, you can put the same red phone Steve Jobs picked up on your counter. Open this page in Safari on an iPhone or iPad.
Volume up! Give it a ring and take a close look. You never know who might answer.

*There is some disagreement in the Apple community about which Apple Store is the true “first” store. Many consider Apple Tysons Corner the first Apple Store because it opened three hours before Apple Glendale Galleria due to time zone differences. It’s also the location Steve Jobs chose to tour and host a media preview at before opening. Others consider Apple Glendale Galleria the first Apple Store because it bears the rollout number R001, indicating that it was the first project planned internally. For the purposes of this article and the author’s sanity, Apple Tysons Corner is referred to as the first Apple Store.

How-To Geek
I tried browsing the web with safari 1.0, here's how it went.
Hands-on with Apple's first web browser.
Key Takeaways
- Safari 1.0 was released in 2003 to replace Internet Explorer on the Mac.
- It was lacking some features compared to other web browsers, but it was fast and minimalist.
- Safari 1.0 is not compatible with most modern websites.
Safari was introduced in 2003 as Apple's replacement for Internet Explorer on the Mac, and it has continued to evolve since then as the default browser on all Apple devices. Let's take a deep dive into the browser that started it all: Safari 1.0.
The first version of Safari was released on June 23rd, 2003 , following a public beta that reached nearly five million downloads. The initial version was an optional download for Macs running Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar , and it was later bundled with Mac OS X 10.3 Panther . Apple continued shipping Safari with every new Mac operating system, continuing to the present day with new releases of macOS.
Hello, Safari
Safari is a core system application on Mac computers, so you can't (easily) use older versions on newer operating systems that have a newer Safari version already installed. In the name of science, I fired up my trusty 1999 PowerMac G3, created a new drive partition, and installed a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. That release shipped with Safari version 1.1, so this isn't technically the first public version, but it's close enough.
Safari 1.0 is a far cry from modern versions of Apple's web browser, but there are some familiar interface elements. The top bar has the back, forward, reload, and bookmark buttons that are still present in today's web browsers, but the address bar and web search are two separate text fields.
Google Chrome helped popularize the idea of a combined address and search bar when it was released in 2009, but before that, most web browsers had the same split text fields. On that note, Google is the default search engine, and I didn't see an option anywhere to change it.
Safari 1.0 isn't just minimalist by today's standards. This new Mac OS X installation also came with Internet Explorer 5 for Mac, which has a much more cluttered design with a sidebar, status bar, and more buttons at the top of the window. You could click a button on the sidebar to hide most of that for distraction-free browsing, but Safari is less complicated out of the box.
Most of the other browsers from this time, like Opera, Netscape, and the Mozilla Application Suite, were similarly feature-packed. The first version of Firefox arrived in 2004, the year after Safari, with a simplified feature set and a focus on web browsing. There is support for tabbed browsing in Safari 1.0, but it's not enabled by default.
There's also a bookmarks manager for organizing your favorite sites and pages, accessible from the menu bar or the bookmarks button in the bookmarks bar. The default bookmarks are a fun look back at the early-2000s internet, with links to Amazon, PayPal, BBC News, MapQuest, Monster.com, and other sites.
The preferences panel has some options for how windows open, where to save files and pages, turning on tabbed browsing, managing plugins, and deleting browsing cookies. There's also an AutoFill feature that can fill in web forms with information from your Address Book.
I also noticed this early version of Safari doesn't have an Inspect Element option, or seemingly any other web development features. You can view the HTML source code for a page, but that's it.
Surf Like It's 2003
So, what can you actually do with Safari 1.0 in 2024? Well, not a lot. This is a twenty-year-old web rendering engine, with no support for modern HTML and CSS layout features, HTML5 video, or most JavaScript features. Every site that loads over HTTPS (SSL) shows security warnings or refuses to load at all.
The main Google home page works, but the search results use a broken mobile layout. CNN, Apple.com, Wikipedia, eBay, and BBC News don't load at all. Amazon made the browser freeze for about a minute, complete with the spinning beachball of death, then loaded a page with just text and no styling or images.
There are a few websites designed specifically for older browsers, though. The FrogFind search engine created by Action Retro on YouTube works well here, which downgrades modern sites to simpler text-based layouts.
FrogFind doesn’t always work well, but it does turn websites like Wikipedia from completely unusable to readable.
Looking Back at Tomorrow
You can’t use Safari 1.0 for typical web browsing anymore, but it’s still a fascinating look at Apple’s vision for the future of web browsing. It wasn’t a feature-packed internet suite, like Netscape and Mozilla, or a super-customizable application like Opera. It was a fast, simple, and focused web browser, built on top of the modern KHTML engine from KDE’s Konqueror project.
Even though Safari wasn’t a perfect experience in its early days, the response from Mac owners was generally positive. Macworld said in 2003 , “Safari loaded pages faster than Internet Explorer in four out of five tests — in some cases, almost twice as fast.” The review from CNET for the 1.0 release said, “We encountered only minor bugs, usually related to JavaScript errors, though less so than the beta versions. Overall, Safari performed well.”
Safari went on to serve as the default browser for the iPhone and iPad, and there was a short-lived Windows version starting in 2007 . Safari’s underlying WebKit engine has also helped shape the internet we know today. WebKit was used by Google Chrome for years until Google forked it to create the Blink engine , which is now used by Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Vivaldi, and other web browsers.
For now, though, I’m happy to get back to a functioning modern web browser.

Safari Themed 1st Birthday Party
Wow, it is just incredible how fast a year goes by. One year ago I was home with a newborn, and now my “baby” is a one-year old toddler! We celebrated my little one’s big “1” with a safari-themed 1st birthday party since Grayson enjoys the Evenflo Triple Fun Jungle Exersaucer so much. The party turned out well, so I wanted to share some of the safari-themed party decorations and inspiration here for you in case you ever want to throw a safari 1st birthday party.

Safari-Themed 1st Birthday STationery
I am fortunate to have a very talented friend who creates and sells custom stationery. Just like with Grayson’s birth announcements , I wanted something unique and customized based on the party’s inspiration, so I contacted The Cheshire Kat Designs to create a cohesive stationery theme for the event. Here is what we came up with.
Safari-Themed Invitation:
Safari Banner:
Safari Door Signage:
Safari Food Signage:
Safari Favor Bag Labels:
safari-Themed 1st birthday Décor
For me, the easiest way to do a safari-themed party and save on décor was to do the party outside in a spot with trees and greenery. Luckily I live in Los Angeles, and was fortunate to have a nice, 80 degree, rain-free day in December to work with. The courtyard of our building was nicely surrounded with shrubbery and palm trees, which made for the perfect safari setting.
Safari Centerpieces:
For table centerpieces, I used a combination of mylar palm tree centerpieces found on eBay, as well as bunches of bananas.
Safari Balloons:
Safari themed birthday party balloons from Amazon
Safari 1st birthday party Tablecloths, Plates, Cups, Napkins, and Utensils
I was able to purchase a lot of my basic safari-themed party décor from the eBay store Sweet Creations Parties. The seller had a huge stock of party basics in a wide variety of themes and colors. They also shipped quickly, were mindful of our party dates, and gave me a nice combined shipping discount. Unfortunately, the store is no longer available, but I will provide the most comparable items I can find on Amazon. I went with lime green table covers , chocolate brown napkins and cups , and lime green plastic cutlery .
The plates I actually got from a different retailer, because I was set on finding a classier (non-cheesy) animal-print plate. This is what I found:
Unfortunately, I can no longer find these exact plates either, but here are some round leopard print plates from Amazon . If you find safari-themed party plates that are more similar to the ones in the picture, let me know in the comments!
Safari Leaf Serving Dishes:
Inflatable Safari Animals:
Safari-Themed 1st birthday Party Favors
Since this was the first children’s party I have ever planned, I had fun choosing the favors. There are SO many choices on things to get for jungle-themed party favors and supplies, and at very competitive prices. Here is what made up each bag:
Animal Print Gift Bags:
Safari Animal Lollipops:
Safari-Themed Stationery Set:
Safari Animal Plush:
Safari-Themed party Food and Beverage ideas
Animal crackers:.
For little snacks and an additional favor, I had a tower of animal cracker boxes on display.
Swamp Juice:
I used lemon-lime Hawaiian Punch, but you can also use Green Gatorade, which I put in a drink dispenser like this one from Amazon .
Sandwiches (or “safari subs”):
I got four 3-foot sandwiches from Subway, as they are budget friendly, can feed a lot of people, and hey, people like Subway. I named them “Safari Subs” to keep with the theme.
Safari-Themed Starters and Sides:
I hit up good ol’ Costco for these. For an appetizer, I went with taquitos, and named them “Bamboo Shoots.” The side dishes were a pasta salad and a Mexican Caesar Salad that I nicknamed “Amazon Salad.” I served them in the palm leaf serving platters pictured above.
Safari Animal Cupcakes:
I decided to take on the task of actually making and decorating my own safari-themed animal cupcakes to save money on getting custom-designed cupcakes. While this did save money, it was pretty time-consuming making and decorating these in bulk. I got the design instructions from Betty Crocker , where they even have a helpful video tutorial for them. Then, I trayed them up with some fake grass purchased from a craft store (you can get trays like these and fake grass from Amazon).
other safari 1st birthday ideas
Safari animal tracks:.
I thought it would be a fun touch to have different jungle animal tracks leading from the elevator to the party entrance. I cut these out of construction paper.
Zebra Piñata:
The party activity (besides food, eating cupcakes and opening gifts) was a piñata. I was fortunate to be able to find a GIANT piñata in downtown LA at the Alameda/8th area for only $15.00. That’s right, this massive zebra only cost $15.00! They had other large piñatas too, but we decided on a zebra for our safari-themed 1st birthday.
Animal Print Wrapping Paper:
As an added details, we decided to wrap our gifts to Grayson in animal print paper. I was able to purchase some in a few different patterns from eBay store Sweet Creations Parties, which is unfortunately no longer active. They looked great as a starter to our gift table (which also had a lime green cover). I did find some animal-print wrapping paper on Amazon, as well as a lime green table cover if you still want to recreate these looks.
Safari birthday Playlist:
A safari-themed 1st birthday party needs a safari-themed playlist! Here is the one I put together, downloading all the mp3’s from Amazon (that sure takes me back). However, these days, there are plenty of places that you can stream these songs from.

Store closures are surging this year. Here are the retailers shuttering the most locations.
By Aimee Picchi
Edited By Alain Sherter
Updated on: May 13, 2024 / 1:33 PM EDT / CBS News
The retail industry is going through a tough time as it copes with inflation-weary consumers and a rash of bankruptcies, prompting chains to announce the closures of almost 3,200 brick-and-mortar stores so far in 2024, according to a new analysis.
That's a 24% increase from a year ago, according to a report from retail data provider CoreSight, which tracks store closures and openings across the U.S. Although some retailers are planning to expand this year, major chains have announced 4% fewer openings compared with a year earlier, the analysis found.
Blame changing consumer habits, as well as retailers' management struggles and bankruptcies, with the latter impacting companies including Rite Aid and Rue21. The largest number of store closures stems from Dollar Tree's announcement earlier this year that it plans to close more than 600 Family Dollar locations in 2024, with the discount store citing the impact of inflation on its customers as well as an increase in shoplifting.
"A lot of this year's closures are related to bankruptcies of chains that have been in trouble for a while, like Rite Aid and Rue21," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, told CBS MoneyWatch. "We're also seeing several retailers, like Family Dollar, take action to weed out underperforming locations."
Although consumer spending has remained solid this year, there are "pockets of softness creeping in, and retailers want to ensure they are in good financial shape to weather any challenges" Saunders added. "That means optimizing store portfolios."
Brick-and-mortar retailers are also struggling with ongoing competition from online rivals such as Amazon.com.
By contrast, some companies blundered strategically, such as Express, which filed for bankruptcy last month and announced plans to close 100 of its 500 locations. The clothing chain, known for its workplace fashion, failed to connect with consumers after the pandemic ushered in working from home, Saunders said.
That put the company "firmly on the wrong side of trends and, in our view, the chain made too little effort to adapt," he said in a recent research note.
Are consumers cutting back?
Recent data shows that Americans are still opening their wallets. Consumer spending in March rose 0.8% (the most recent data available), which economists say represents solid growth.
But some signs consumers are starting to fade amid a modest economic slowdown. On Friday, the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumer sentiment index for May dropped to 67.4, the largest monthly decline since mid-2021. Confidence is dipping because of expectations for higher inflation and softer growth, said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial, in an email.
"Uncertainty about the inflation path could suppress consumer spending in the coming months," he noted.
Consumers have also spent down any remaining extra money they socked away during the pandemic, when federal stimulus checks and other benefits bolstered their bank accounts, Roach said in an earlier report.
"[T]here are potential risks to consumer spending," he said. "When households exhaust these accumulated savings, it could lead to a decline in discretionary spending."
Even so, some retailers are planning to open hundreds of new stores, CoreSight found. Dollar General, a rival of Dollar Tree, said it will add more than 800 locations this year, putting it at the top of the list of retailers opening new stores this year, according to the research firm.
In second place is 7-Eleven, which plans to open more than 270 U.S. locations this year, followed by discount store Five Below, with plans to open 227 outlets, the analysis found.

Apple staff could go on strike at the first US store to unionize
- Workers at a Towson, Maryland, Apple store have authorized a strike.
- Concerns include work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling, and wages lower than living costs.
- This Apple store was the first to unionize in the US in June 2022.
Workers at an Apple store in Towson, Maryland — the first US store to unionize — have authorized a strike.
Employees voted "overwhelmingly" in favor of allowing a strike, their retail labor union said in a statement on Saturday.
The issues "include concerns over work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling practices disrupting personal lives, and wages failing to align with the area's cost of living," the statement said.
The workers voted to unionize in June 2022 and have been negotiating with Apple's management since January 2023. Their past proposals for Apple have included more time off and the introduction of a tipping system . Saturday's statement did not include information about what specifics the union is currently negotiating over with Apple.
No date has been set for the strike, the union said.
The employees at the Towson store organized as the Coalition of Organized Retail Employees in 2022 when they voted to be represented by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers.
Related stories
About 100 Towson Apple store employees belong to the union, which also represents 600,000 workers from companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and United Airlines.
Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment sent outside regular working hours.
In a statement to the Associated Press, the tech giant said: "We deeply value our team members and we're proud to provide them with industry leading compensation and exceptional benefits."
The tech company is facing labor-related issues at the Maryland store and elsewhere.
Last year, the National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint on behalf of the Towson workers, which alleged Apple denied benefits to workers at the store.
Apple's Towson store is one of two in the US that have successfully unionized. A store in Oklahoma City joined the Communications Workers of America union in October 2022. An Apple store in New Jersey voted against unionizing on Saturday.
Last week, the National Labor Review Board found that Apple illegally interrogated workers over pro-union activities at a New York City location. In December 2022, the NLRB said Apple violated labor law at its Atlanta location, where it interrogated workers and forced them to attend anti-union meetings, per the NLRB.
Other American retail giants' staff at various stores have also unionized in recent years, including Starbucks and Amazon . Employees at both companies have gone on strike in the past to protest unfair working conditions.
