Australian Business Traveller relaunches after Executive Traveller rebrand

Australian Business Traveller has completed its rebrand, relaunching this week as Executive Traveller.

The change will allow the title to focus more on international content and better reflect its audiences’ worldwide travel patterns.

executive traveller.com.au

Australian Business Traveller launched in November 2010 as the destination for business and premium travellers. It announced its rebrand in May this year, flagging a desire to focus more on the global market.

According to reporting from the site, 880,000 unique Australian readers visit it monthly, while the worldwide audience is in excess of 1.3m readers.

Australian Business Traveller co-founder, who has become Executive Traveller editor-in-chief, David Flynn, said the audience is highly engaged and keen for the insights Executive Traveller offers.

“Our readers are frequent travellers, predominantly in business and first class,” said Flynn.

“They’re ‘A/Bs with a boarding pass’. It’s a highly-engaged audience of people who come to us for ‘need-to-know’ insights, expert advice, strategies and information which makes their travel a better, smoother and more enjoyable experience.”

As part of the redesign, Executive Traveller has added selected destination content to its platform, as well as luxury leisure travel.

“Through our in-depth yearly reader surveys we know we’ve built up one of Australia’s strongest male-skewed premium digital audiences. Additionally, almost two thirds of our readers hold a Gold or equivalent frequent flyer status,” said Sid Raja, who co-founded Australian Business Traveller, and is now Executive Traveller publisher and company CEO.

Raja and Flynn’s new roles are joined by Benn Eicchorn starting as CTO at the beginning of 2019, former Executive Style editor Steve Colquohorn joining as lifestyle editor, motoring writer Paul Glover being appointed motoring editor, and former Bauer Trader Media motoring manager editor Ged Bulmer coming on as motoring reviews specialist.

“We’ve been working hard over the last six months to deliver an elevated new environment for our readers and commercial partners. Now that we’ve launched, my focus will move to building out a range of new features and functionality to enhance the website,” said Eicchorn.

Nick Stock will cover wine, Franz Scheurer spirits, Simon Thomsen business, Norman Burns watches, and Louise Wedgwood on health and wellness.

Former Robb Report editor-in-chief Michael Stahl will be a regular contributor with a roaming brief across motoring, watches, travel and design. Amanda Beck, previously marketing and sales manager at decorated single malt whisky producer Sullivans Cove, has taken on a commercial and marketing role in overseeing the publication as lifestyle director.

Hannah Blackiston was the deputy editor of Mumbrella. She worked with the company from March 2019 to November 2020.

Apple TV+ announces third season for globetrotting travel series “The Reluctant Traveller With Eugene Levy”

“The Reluctant Traveller With Eugene Levy” image

Today, Apple TV+ announced a third season renewal for the multi-award-winning travel series “The Reluctant Traveller With Eugene Levy,” hosted and executive produced by Emmy Award winner Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”). The eight-episode third season will follow Levy on a truly global adventure as he attempts to curate his own ‘ultimate travel bucket list.’ If he’s to inch closer to becoming a real traveller, he’ll need to tick off some of the world's must-do experiences. Trouble is, he doesn’t have a clue where to start.

Since its global debut, “The Reluctant Traveller With Eugene Levy” has received great acclaim from critics around the world. Hailed as “dazzling, delightful … and gorgeously filmed,” and “perhaps the perfect blend of travel documentary and pure comedy,” the series features host Levy who is “an absolute delight to watch” and “endlessly entertaining.” The series was also recently honoured with wins for Best Travel/Adventure Show and Best Unstructured Series at the Critics Choice Real TV Awards. The complete first and second seasons are now streaming globally on Apple TV+.

“I really appreciate what this show is trying to do for me,” said host and executive producer Eugene Levy. But to be a real seasoned traveller, you need to have a strong sense of adventure and curiosity, and I’m ashamed to say over the past two seasons I’ve developed neither. But I have to admit I’m having a lot of fun putting in the effort. So the beat goes on, apparently.”

After conquering some of his greatest fears in seasons one and two, Levy admits, his travels have changed him for the better. Now, he is back on the road for an adventure that promises to broaden his horizons more than any other. Join him for this all-new eye-opening trip!

The series is produced for Apple TV+ by Twofour and is executive produced by Levy, David Brindley, Nic Patten, Sara Brailsford, Iain Peckham and Lily Fitzpatrick.

“The Reluctant Traveller With Eugene Levy” is part of a growing line-up of acclaimed and award-winning nonfiction programming on Apple TV+, including “The Dynasty: New England Patriots,” a new documentary event series about the New England Patriots, from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries, in association with NFL Films; “Hollywood Con Queen,” featuring the shocking story of one of Hollywood’s biggest scams, from executive producer Chris Smith; and, “Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend,” the first official and definitive account of Messi’s sensational career with the Argentina national football team and his five FIFA World Cup appearances, including his 2022 win, among many others.

Apple TV+ offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all of a user’s favourite screens. After its launch on 1 November, 2019, Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service in its debut. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have earned 496 wins and 2,171 award nominations and counting, including multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy “Ted Lasso” and historic Oscar Best Picture winner “CODA.”

Monopole is morphing into a French restaurant

Profile picture of Jordan Kretchmer

Hospitality outfit the Bentley Group’s beloved wine bar Monopole will transform into a French restaurant following 12 years of service. Originally located in Potts Point, Monopole moved to the CBD in 2020 , and picked up GT ’s Wine Bar of the Year Award in 2022. “After 12 successful years, I feel this is a natural progression for Monopole,” said co-owner and executive Brent Savage in a statement.

executive traveller.com.au

And while Monopole’s food has always been of a French ilk, the switch from bar à vin to plat du jour promises French classics through a Bentley Group lens. As he puts it, Savage “had a lot of fun designing this menu with our group head chef Aiden Stevens”. This proliferated as traditional French techniques used to showcase Australian producers – think vol-au-vent with sommerlad chicken, Balmain bug and sweetcorn.

Mille-feuille gets a savoury switch up with delicate layers of golden pastry, smoked eel, apple and pickled shallot; as does tarte tatin with caramelised eschallots joined by Roquefort cheese and watercress. Meanwhile a local riff on boudin blanc de homard uses marron to make the white meat sausage, served with a marron tail, morels and tarragon butter. More substantial plates include a duck burger with pickles, Comté and hot sauce (plus the option to luxe it up with duck liver parfait); and fillet steak au poivre.

Marron at Monopole

A well-priced fixed menu will also be a draw card with two courses for $55 and three courses for $70, offered every day before 6pm. And while there will be some bistro classics, co-owner and sommelier Hildebrandt has emphasised Monopole won’t be classified as a bistro or brasserie, but rather a restaurant with a strong French wine program, plus a focus on apéritifs and digestifs.

A revamped dining room will offer yet another reason to visit the Bentley’s Group’s redone Monopole. Expect velvet curtains, vintage wine fair posters, antique lighting and ivory plateware.

Appropriately the new gallic Monopole will host a lunch for Bastille Day, Sunday 14 July, with a specially designed menu. Festivities will continue on Friday 19 July with a dinner with Champagne producer Pierre Gimonnet.

Monopole reopens on July 2 at 16/20 Curtain Place, Sydney.

A former ballet teacher turned writer, Jordan got her start in the media industry documenting Sydney’s music and nightlife scene, writing for Time Out Sydney, The Guardian and Broadsheet. She soon realised she preferred food to festivals and embarked on learning as much as she could about the hospitality industry. In 2019 she joined Gourmet Traveller as a writer, where she’s tasked with finding the hottest new restaurant openings, hotels worth checking in to and snacks worth seeking out. With a robust appetite for learning about the intricacies of food and how we use it as an expression of human culture, Jordan loves eating food as much as she does cooking it. She also loves a good chat about how to make the perfect sandwich, what’s the best chip or where to find the best seafood pasta on the planet.

Transdev and John Holland to run world’s largest tram network

executive traveller.com.au

Melburnians can expect more reliable tram services and fewer disruptions to their journey under new operator Yarra Journey Makers (YJM), a joint venture of Transdev and John Holland.

YJM was today named as the successful bidder to operate and maintain Melbourne’s 250-kilometre tram network for an initial term of nine years, beginning in December.

The joint venture brings unrivalled transport experience through Transdev – a multi-modal operator in Australia and New Zealand – and John Holland, a leading building, infrastructure and end-to-end rail and transport company.

Transdev Australia and New Zealand CEO Brian Brennan said he was proud and excited of the trust placed in YJM to keep Melbourne moving.

“Choosing YJM to run Yarra Trams is a tremendous honour and privilege because the responsibility and opportunities are immense,” Mr Brennan said.

“Our partnership will support the State’s vision of more integrated, sustainable transport for Victoria and the delivery of Melbourne’s Tram Plan.

“Our focus is performance and customer experience – unlocking smarter ways to move more people, day and night, with the real-time information they need, when they need it.”

John Holland’s Executive General Manager – Rail and Transport Steve Butcher said John Holland was proud to be leveraging its skills and experience in end-to-end rail solutions to write the next chapter for the world’s largest tram network.

“Melburnians deserve a world-class tram network – and we’re proud to be bringing our industry-leading expertise to deliver the best possible passenger experience for this growing city,” Mr Butcher said.

“We’re committed to continuous improvement of the tram network and look forward to operating the fleet of Next Generation Trams, as we deliver the state-of-the-art depot infrastructure that will house them.

“We also pride ourselves on creating a diverse, inclusive and connected workforce that reflects the people we serve every day.”

YJM has a detailed plan in place for the December changeover which prioritises a seamless transition for customers and the existing workforce.

About Transdev and John Holland Transdev and John Holland are contracted to operate 20 light rail networks globally, including four Australian light rail networks in Sydney, Parramatta, Canberra and Adelaide. They also operate, as a joint venture, the largest bus contract in Australia in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, providing 49 million passengers trips with more than 1.4m scheduled route services in 2023.

The Executive Traveller Story

Celebrating seventeen years from 2003-2020

Executive Traveller Magazine was created to facilitate the business of travelling for top executives and affluent travellers and continues to do so to date.

Behind the inspiration and hard work is an enthusiastic writer and a keen facilitator…

“When Executive Traveller reached its tenth anniversary in 2013, the achievement made me reflect on what motivated me to create the magazine.  A decade plus seven now, and I marvel at our accomplishments while looking forward to the new challenges ahead.”

Lyssiemay Annoh Editor-in-Chief, Executive Traveller Magazine

executive traveller.com.au

Our Editor-in-Chief, Lyssiemay Annoh made travelling her business from a very tender age.  She was lucky to follow her father, an ambitious railwayman, around the globe on business and loved every minute of it.  Being the most senior executive of the company that he worked for, so the family did not have to queue or wait for luggage.  They waited in VIP lounges while eager staff checked them through customs, immigration and through gates into the safe world of yesterday.

As Lyssiemay developed in life she also found herself in the world of travel, this time in business aviation; She liked working with service providers such as hotels, car rental companies, concierges and all those who make the wheel turn in the world of corporate and affluent travel.  She knew that this was the kind of travel that she would like to shout about. For Lyssiemay, travel had to be fun and seamless.  Whether it is for business or leisure, why should travelling be a struggle of back aches and a scrum for seats?  Security has changed things a bit and makes us leave home longer than we should but when meticulously planned, travel can still be fun and wonderfully comfortable.

It is for her belief in productivity and travel that gave birth to Executive Traveller Magazine.  Her message to affluent, corporate, and executive travellers was that if you feel tired and uncomfortable on journey, you do not perform well to secure that deal.

Practicality and comfort are all that travelling is about and everyone, if even it is for only once, should endeavour to enjoy the best that travel has to offer and may it always be available to travellers!

How it all began….

Austin Butler shares ongoing heartache over family tragedy

Profile picture of Katherine Davison

Elvis star Austin Butler has shared his ongoing heartache over a family tragedy that left him devastated when he was just 23.

The 32-year-old actor spoke to Adelaide Now about his cherished memories of his mother and “best friend”, Lori.

Lori died in 2014 following a battle with cancer.

Austin Butler

‘If I describe her, she was a person who was just so kind to everybody that she came in contact with and I hope to be even just a little bit like her in that way,” Butler told the publication.

“If you came into contact with her… your day was a little bit better,” the star added.

“She was such a bright light and so I think there’s a lot of things that I learned from her that I admire so much. And my dad’s the same way, he’s just always kind.

“I just have to credit my parents you know, my mum was my best friend.”

Austin Butler with mum Lori and Vanessa Hudgens in 2012

Speaking to The Times in August 2023, Butler revealed how the smell of orange blossom evoked a powerful memory of his mother.

“Because in my childhood home there was this orange tree in the backyard and I remember so vividly when the tree would bloom,” he said.

“My mother and I would go in the backyard and pick oranges and then go inside to make orange juice. And that really hit me.”

Butler’s mum had a far-reaching impact on the actor – who got his big break appearing as a child star on Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel and now appears in new film The Bikeriders .

He previously told how he owed his mum “everything” because she “quite her job and drove me to auditions and took me to acting classes”.

In January 2023, at an actor’s roundtable discussion hosted by the The Hollywood Reporter , Butler spoke candidly about the impact of her loss.

Austin Butler

“After my mum passed away, I went straight to New Zealand to start shooting a young-adult TV show [The Shannara Chronicles],” he said.

“A lot of people enjoyed the show, and I had fun doing horseback riding and that sort of thing, but I’d go home and cry every night.

“I was dealing with grief, but it was also this feeling that I wasn’t aligned with something that felt truly fulfilling,” he continued.

“I got done with that show, once they canceled it after two seasons, and I said, ‘I would rather not work as an actor than ever do something like that again.'”

A period where he started “sinking into a deeper and deeper depression” followed.

“It was about six or eight months of that. Then my agent called and said, ‘You’ve got to put yourself on tape for The Iceman Cometh. Denzel [Washington]’s doing it on Broadway,'” Butler said.

“And that’s the moment that changed my career,”

Katherine is the Executive Editor (News & Features) for New Idea and WHO, and a real-life specialist with 17 years of experience in Australia and the UK.

For a rental car to be covered, you need to make sure that it is insured (confirmed by the rental company), as we do not pay for full damages to a rental car, only your excess.

Our premiums would be astronomical if we could do that! There are limits and exclusions to all travel insurance policies, so we strongly advise you to read our product disclosure statement.

The Reluctant Traveller with Eugene Levy has been renewed for a third season by Apple TV+.

An eight-episode third season will follow our host and executive producer Eugene Levy ( Schitt’s Creek ) as he again attempts to curate his own ‘ultimate travel bucket list.’

“I really appreciate what this show is trying to do for me,” said host and executive producer Eugene Levy. But to be a real seasoned traveler, you need to have a strong sense of adventure and curiosity, and I’m ashamed to say over the past two seasons I’ve developed neither. But I have to admit I’m having a lot of fun putting in the effort. So the beat goes on, apparently.”

The series is produced for Apple TV+ by Twofour and is executive produced by Levy, David Brindley, Nic Patten, Sara Brailsford, Iain Peckham and Lily Fitzpatrick.

I like Eugene Levy but didn’t last past the first 3 episodes of the first series. The “reluctant traveller” schtick works for a while, but the hugely expensive highly curated destinations he goes to are unattainable for nearly everybody. So his “lack of adventure and curiosity” was clearly irrelevant and thus the whole thing became simply annoying..
