The world's top-ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, faces four criminal charges after an interaction with police early Friday morning as he attempted to arrive by car at a Louisville golf club where this week's PGA Championship is being held.

The incident took place at the entrance to the Valhalla Golf Club, where Louisville police had halted traffic Friday morning after an unrelated incident in which a pedestrian — an employee of a vendor working at the golf tournament — had been struck and killed by a shuttle bus.

The Louisville police report, published by local radio station WHAS , said that Scheffler refused to comply with officers directing traffic and dragged an officer with his car.

A lawyer representing Scheffler, Steve Romines, disputed that version of events in an email to NPR.

"He was proceeding as directed by another traffic officer and driving a marked player's vehicle with credentials visible," Romines said. "He stopped immediately upon being directed to and never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle."

Scheffler's charges include one felony count of second-degree assault of a police officer, along with three misdemeanors: criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. An arraignment has been set for Tuesday. Scheffler plans to plead not guilty, Romines said.

In a statement posted to his Instagram, Scheffler said he had never intended to disregard any police instructions.

"It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," Scheffler said.

A video recorded by ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington showed a handcuffed Scheffler being led to a police cruiser by two officers. "Right now, he's going to jail," an officer is heard telling Darlington. "He's going to jail, and there ain't nothing you can do about it."

In the police report, the officer involved in the incident, Det. Bryan Gillis, said Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging [the officer] to the ground." As a result, the report said, Gillis suffered "pain, swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee" and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

According to public records, Scheffler was booked by the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections at 7:28 a.m. local time. He was released just over an hour later.

In a statement, the Louisville Metro Police Department said that all traffic lanes at the scene were closed during the investigation into the fatality. "LMPD personnel were also directing traffic around the scene. While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested. We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating," the department said.

Scheffler, 27, is the world's No. 1 ranked men's golfer and is fresh off a win at last month's Masters Tournament . After his release, Scheffler arrived at the golf club and teed off at 10:08 a.m. as scheduled, then made a birdie on his first hole of the day.

In a statement, the PGA said it was "devastated" to learn of the traffic death that killed a vendor's employee. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones," the organization said .

The worker had been walking across the main road near the golf club's entry gates when he was hit by the bus, according to Louisville police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell. "Unfortunately, the bus didn't see him and struck the individual. He was pronounced dead on the scene and our traffic unit is investigating at this time," Mitchell said in an interview with WHAS, according to a statement from the PGA.

Washington Commanders 2024 schedule: The Jayden Daniels tour debuts in Tampa

ASHBURN, VA - MAY 10: Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury of the Washington Commanders instructs Jayden Daniels #5 during Washington Commanders Rookie Minicamp at OrthoVirginia Training Center on May 10, 2024 in Ashburn, Virginia. (Photo by Scott Taetsch/Getty Images)

Who were the biggest winners and losers of the NFL schedule release ? Jeff Howe has you covered.

What do you give an NFL team with new faces at head coach, general manager, quarterback, three coordinators spots and half the roster? An 18-week schedule to showcase all the changes a franchise coming off a 4-13 campaign desperately needed.

The league released the entire slate for the 2024 season on Wednesday night. This included not only the opponents of the Washington Commanders — we knew that piece of the puzzle — but also when each game takes place.

The pro debut of No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels will come against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Dan Quinn’s return to being a head coach includes rematches against his former team ( Atlanta Falcons ) and most recent employer ( Dallas Cowboys ). Each of the 20-plus free agents signed by general manager Adam Peters surely has their own can’t-wait matchups.

In addition to the six games against their NFC East rivals, the Commanders face each team from the NFC South and AFC North, as well as the 2023 last-place teams from the NFC North, NFC West and AFC South. Geography favors Washington — the fewest travel miles among all teams thanks to only one game beyond the central time zone — but less travel doesn’t automatically equal more wins.

Here’s the full 18-week schedule, followed by an analysis of what Washington faces.

Week 1 keys to victory

Jayden Daniels isn’t the official Week 1 starter, but anyone besides the overall No. 2 pick under center would be surprising, not to mention a letdown. Facing a Buccaneers defense that ranked seventh in points allowed isn’t a soft entry point for the rookie. However, Washington’s early-season advantage will be the unknown, as offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury unveils his overall scheme and how he’ll deploy the dual-threat quarterback.

The mystery aspect also applies to the defense with potentially seven new starters and Dan Quinn’s attacking approach. Finding ways to pressure quarterback Baker Mayfield — Frankie Luvu off the edge? Attack the middle with three tackles? DB blitzes? — should limit the exposure of Washington’s shaky cornerback group tasked with slowing down wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin .

Must-watch game: vs. Bears , Week 8

The quarterbacks selected first and second overall in this year’s draft. The visiting passer, Caleb Williams , returns to his hometown. If all goes right, Daniels and Williams will be among the NFC’s brighter stars for years to come. Then there’s Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat facing his former team for the first time since last year’s in-season trade. Chicago hammered Washington by 20 points in 2023, though both teams have transitioned significantly since that Thursday night game.

Find the best deals on tickets to see your favorite teams .

Toughest stretch: Weeks 3-6

The entire AFC North finished with winning records last season. Baltimore lost gobs of players and staffers from that 13-win team, but two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson remains. The Bengals went 9-8 and nearly qualified for the playoffs despite losing Joe Burrow to injury. Cleveland did reach the postseason without Deshaun Watson and with a formidable defense. The Commanders might be the favorites over the Cardinals if it was a home game. Instead, it’s one of three road games during this four-game stretch. Finishing 2-2 would be a win. Otherwise, Washington will begin playing catch-up in the standings rather quickly.

Game that has gotten tougher: vs. Falcons

The primary curiosity over why Atlanta chose a quarterback in the first round is because it already significantly upgraded the position with Kirk Cousins . Washington won 24-16 on the road last season despite being outgained 402-193 in total yards. Atlanta’s then-starting quarterback, Desmond Ridder , threw three interceptions in the loss. Cousins’ presence behind a solid offensive line should lead to more production from playmakers such as running back Bijan Robinson , wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts . Let’s not forget that Cousins returning to where he began his career adds some juice, especially since Daniels represents the latest attempt at replacing Mr. “You like that.”

One game the Commanders can’t afford to lose: vs. Panthers , Week 7

There aren’t many obvious games Washington should win. At home against a Carolina team that finished with the league’s worst record in 2023 is one of them. The Panthers made significant changes, including hiring head coach Dave Canales. If the offensive-minded Canales works wonders with 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young , the Panthers could surprise folks. Dropping this game immediately after the aforementioned toughest stretch could emphasize the need for even more patience with the rebuild than expected.

Best offense the Commanders will face: Bengals

Quibble as needed about choosing Cincinnati over others. It’s a Joe Burrow thing. He’s missed at least six games with injuries in two of four seasons, including in 2023. The other two years Burrow averaged 4,543 passing yards and 34 1/2 touchdowns. Joe Cool will return to the MVP conversation if he stays on the field, especially since the Bengals kept the Ja’Marr Chase-Tee Higgins receiving tandem. Perhaps there’s a shootout between a pair of former LSU, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks.

Best defense the Commanders will face: Browns

The Browns allowed the fewest passing and overall yards last season while tying for fifth with 28 takeaways. Defensive end Myles Garrett , coming off a third consecutive campaign with at least 14 sacks, poses problems wherever he lines up. Expect Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward to see plenty of snaps against his former college teammate, Terry McLaurin .

Predicted record: 6-11

That Peters replaced half of last season’s 4-13 roster shows the talent deficiency the Commanders must overcome. Daniels is the ultimate Year 1 wild card from a win-loss perspective. More variables exist with five Day 2 selections, a new coaching staff and free-agent signings Luvu, center Tyler Biadasz , running back Austin Ekeler , safety Jeremy Chinn and future Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Wagner . The realistic goal is building for a time beyond 2024, but Quinn and the players will work their hardest to make future contention happen now.

Predicted NFC East finish:

1. Eagles : Last season’s collapse was jarring, and we’ll see how the new round of headliners (running back Saquon Barkley , defensive coordinator Vic Fangio) jells with the holdovers. But Philly has the most talent in the division.

2. Cowboys: Dallas had a quiet transactional offseason, still has the Dak Prescott contract matter on the to-do list, has major questions at running back and lost lots of player and coaching talent on defense. However, Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons make up the difference. Enough to swing a wild-card spot? We’ll see.

3. Giants : If quarterback Daniel Jones cannot return to his breakout 2022 form and the offensive line signings don’t upgrade a weak unit, the Giants could implode — especially with Barkley residing further down I-95. Selecting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers offers needed explosiveness in the passing game, and the Giants arguably have the best defensive line in the division after acquiring free-agent pass rusher Brian Burns .

4. Commanders: Everyone is hoping for a C.J. Stroud -like entrance from Daniels. If that happens, and Quinn’s coaching and mojo find a sweet spot, perhaps Washington stuns the world. For now, we’ll assume the Commanders’ better days start in 2025.

Perplexity’s latest partnership set to power SoundHound’s voice assistant

Join us in returning to NYC on June 5th to collaborate with executive leaders in exploring comprehensive methods for auditing AI models regarding bias, performance, and ethical compliance across diverse organizations. Find out how you can attend here .

As OpenAI gears up to launch a search-focused product to take on Google and Bing, Perplexity , the company already making waves with an AI-first knowledge engine, is going all in on pushing the reach of its product through industry partnerships. A few weeks ago, the Aravind Srinivas-led startup shared plans for global expansion with major telcos. And now, as the next step, it is teaming up with SoundHound , a leader in voice AI.

Under the engagement, announced yesterday, Perplexity’s online large language model (LLM)-driven capabilities will power SoundHound’s Chat AI voice assistant, making it more capable than ever. The companies expect the move to translate into a better experience for SoundHound’s customers while giving Perplexity access to a broader market.

“Through this integration… we’re one step closer to our goal of making Perplexity available to everyone across every device they use. With the growing popularity of voice AI, we’re allowing users to more easily access the information they need, when they need it,” Dmitry Shevelenko, chief business officer at Perplexity, said in a statement .

What to expect from Perplexity and SoundHound?

Founded more than a decade ago, SoundHound serves a range of industries with its speech recognition and voice AI solutions. For consumers, the company has developed Chat AI, a Siri-like voice assistant that users can interact with and get easy answers. It integrates with specific knowledge domains – pulling real-time data on topics such as weather, sports, stocks, flight status and restaurants – and combines that information with static large language models to produce comprehensive responses.

The AI Impact Tour: The AI Audit

Join us as we return to NYC on June 5th to engage with top executive leaders, delving into strategies for auditing AI models to ensure fairness, optimal performance, and ethical compliance across diverse organizations. Secure your attendance for this exclusive invite-only event.

Now, as the next step in this work, the company is roping in Perplexity’s online LLMs into Chat AI. These models inherently surf the web to leverage the most helpful and up-to-date information when forming a response. This will enable Chat AI to answer all sorts of time-sensitive queries, going beyond what was possible by connecting real-time data with static LLMs.

SoundHound says Perplexity’s online LLMs will significantly expand the type and complexity of the questions Chat AI can handle. For instance, a user could ask a question like: “How does the price of gas this week compare to last week?” and the response should include accurate, live information on gas prices and a comprehensive generative AI-style comparison with prices from last week. This response could then be followed up with: “Navigate to the nearest gas station,” prompting SoundHound to seamlessly incorporate data from the appropriate sources to provide directions on the device in use.

That said, it is important to note that SoundHound has not clarified which online LLMs from Perplexity it aims to use. Currently, the startup has two sizes on offer: pplx-7b-online and pplx-70b-online.

Smarter voice assistants on the way

With Perplexity’s models, SoundHound Chat AI is on track to become one of the strongest generative AI-powered voice assistants out there, taking on the likes of Google Assistant and Alexa. The offering was the first in the world to launch with generative AI capabilities as well as the first to go into production for automobiles. It is already deployed in more than 12 countries in 18 languages with Stellantis.

“By integrating Perplexity search capabilities into SoundHound Chat AI we’re raising the bar for voice assistants and the kinds of queries they can handle effortlessly. Where this technology is already deployed in vehicles, we’re seeing usage habits shift substantially – increasing by multiples. We’re confident that this enhancement will further delight users as more and more people choose to talk rather than type,” Mike Zagorsek, SoundHound AI COO, said in a statement.

Notably, both Google and Amazon have made announcements to enhance their voice assistants, Google Assistant and Alexa, with generative AI models. However, the experiences are yet to roll out globally. Apple is also expected to bring an improved gen AI-driven avatar or Siri . In the long run, with this LLM-driven shift, one can easily expect voice assistants, which have traditionally been rigid and flow-driven, to engage in more organic, human-like conversations while providing more helpful and accurate responses.

For Perplexity, the partnership with SoundHound marks the addition of another strong distribution channel expanding the reach of its LLM-driven search capabilities. Before this, the company independently partnered with SoftBank, Deutsche Telekom, SK Telecom, ElevenLabs, Copy AI, Arc and Nothing.

PGA Championship weather: Thunderstorms could impact Friday's second round

Change Text Size

Update: Thursday, 6:10 p.m. ET: Thursday's opening round of the 106th PGA Championship featured pleasant skies for the 156-player field, which took advantage with low scores including Xander Schauffele's 9-under 62, a tournament record.

The second round at Valhalla Golf Club could offer a different test, both mental and physical.

Friday's weather forecast calls for a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms in Louisville, Kentucky, with rainfall of .50 to .75 inches forecasted. Winds are also expected to gust 10-15 mph. Hence monsoon-like conditions could be in store for the field, with weather delays a possibility throughout the second round.

"A low-pressure system will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region throughout the day Friday," wrote the tournament's official weather forecast. "Rainfall could be heavy at times, especially with thunderstorms."

During the most recent PGA Championship contested at Valhalla (2014), severe weather impacted the final round. After start-and-stop conditions, the final round was completed as darkness fell in the Bluegrass State, with Rory McIlroy memorably defeating Phil Mickelson by one stroke; McIlroy (in the final group) essentially played up with the penultimate group in order to beat darkness.

Even if Friday's second round is pushed into Saturday, the field reduction after the 36-hole cut (top 70 and ties) should mean flexibility to complete 72 holes by Sunday evening. Saturday's weather is no sure thing, though (chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms; 40% chance of rain). In the event of delays both Friday and Saturday, the possibility of a Monday finish would be raised.

Update: Thursday, 7:25 a.m. ET: After a 10-minute fog delay, the opening round of the 106th PGA Championship is underway, with a trumpet ceremony leading into Michael Block's opening tee shot at Valhalla.

Thursday's forecast looks pleasant overall, with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures should reach 80F, with winds W-SW, 5-10 mph, and perhaps a passing light shower between 5 and 7 p.m. Thunderstorms could arrive overnight, making for a potentially soggy Friday.

Here's the weather forecast for the next three days, as of 6 a.m. Thursday:

  • Friday : Showers and thunderstorms likely, 90% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 72F. Winds: S-SW 10-15 mph. Projected .50 to .75 inches of rainfall.
  • Saturday: Chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, 40% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 78F. Winds: E-NE 4-8 mph. Projected .20 to .30 inches of rainfall.
  • Sunday: Partly cloudy and warm, 20% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 84F. Winds N-NE, 10-15 mph.

Update: Thursday, 7:20 a.m. ET: The start of Thursday's opening round at the 106th PGA Championship has been delayed 10 minutes due to fog. Michael Block will now hit the opening tee shot at 7:25 a.m. ET.

Update: Tuesday, 10:40 a.m. ET: Tuesday's practice round has resumed after a brief suspension due to dangerous weather in the area. The total time of delay was 46 minutes; play was suspended at 9:50 a.m. and resumed at 10:36 a.m.

Update: Tuesday, 9:50 a.m. ET: Tuesday's practice round at the PGA Championship has been suspended due to potentially dangerous weather in the area. "Please seek shelter immediately," said the official tournament announcement. "The leading edge of the system is potentially dangerous."

The current forecast calls for 1/2 to 1 inch of rain across the day, with locally higher amounts. "Storms are not expected to be severe, but could produce gusty winds, small hail and heavy rainfall," wrote the tournament weather forecast issued at 6 a.m. Tuesday. "Showers and storms will decrease in coverage this evening as we lose the heating of the day."

Scroll below to see the overall weather outlook for the week as well as a day-by-day forecast.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The weather played a prominent role at the 2014 PGA Championship, the last time the year’s second major was hosted at Valhalla Golf Club. Rory McIlroy won his fourth major championship while racing against darkness after torrential rain flooded the course and caused delayed tee times in the final round.

The weather may again play a factor at this week’s PGA Championship, with rain forecasted to arrive at Valhalla as early as Monday evening and remain in the area for several days.

A low-pressure system is expected to slowly move across the region Tuesday, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms through the day. Rainfall could be heavy at times, with up to 3/4 of an inch forecasted. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to linger for most of Wednesday before the system finally moves east. Drier weather returns Thursday before another low-pressure system brings showers and thunderstorms back to the region Friday into Saturday morning.

Here's a day-by-day breakdown (through Sunday) of the PGA Championship official weather forecast, as of 6 a.m. Tuesday:

  • Tuesday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms likely, 80% of rain. Low: 61F, High: 73F. Winds: S 10-15mph.
  • Wednesday : Scattered showers and thunderstorms, 60% chance of rain. Low: 60F, High: 73F. Winds: NE to WSW, 4-8 mph.
  • Thursday: Partly cloudy, 20% chance of rain. Low: 56F, High: 78F. Winds: SW, 10-15 mph.
  • Friday : Showers and thunderstorms likely, 80% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 75F. Winds: SW 10-15 mph.
  • Saturday: Chance of AM showers, 50% chance of rain. Low: 61F, High: 80F. Winds: NW 10-15 mph.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny and warm, 0% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 83F. Winds N 6-12 mph.
