Summer Reading

When the Kindle first came out, I was completely against it in the same way that I hear so many people are against it. “It isn’t a book,” “It won’t read like a real book,” or “I won’t like it.” Now that I have a Kindle and the Kindle app on the iPad, I am all for the Kindle! For one, the price of the book is far less than a paper copy and it takes up little room in my home. That I love! Once you start reading on a Kindle or on the iPad, it does mimic a real book with the tone of the “ink” on the “paper” and especially with the iPad you feel like you are turning the pages. I wish I could read everything on my Kindle!

Yesterday on the Today show, novelists Harlan Coben and Jennifer Weiner shared their favorite books for the summer and that got me thinking about my own book list. I currently have “ Bossypants ” by Tina Fey on my Kindle and it’s there because it’s a great vacation read. I can put it down for a few days or even weeks and when I pick it back up, I don’t feel like I’m lost. I also have “Cruise Confidential: A Hit Below the Waterline: Where the Crew Lives, Eats, Wars, and Parties. One Crazy Year Working on Cruise Ships” by Brian David Bruns on my Kindle. An interesting read for anyone who likes cruising, it’s not going to win any awards for great writing, but where else will you get to learn about what goes on behind the scenes on a cruise ship? Of course, I love my favorites like Sophie Kinsella and Anne Tyler and the free books that are available. Which ones are free? There are free classics and out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books, as well as limited-time free promotional ebooks available for Kindle. Think books like “Pride and Prejudice,” “Little Women,” “Dracula,” and the list goes on and on. The Internet Archive has over 2.5 million free titles, Open Library has over 1 million free titles, Project Gutenberg has over 30,000 free titles, and ManyBooks.net has over 26,000 free titles. With so many free titles available, there is no excuse not to read.

So what will you be reading this summer? It might be something someone else would love to read so please share!

Fantastic experience: Very nice buses with lovely drivers which are generally on time unless of unforeseen circumstances

Fantastic experience: I love a good bus ride. I often get the bus. You just can't beat pressing the bell when it is your stop. Sometimes I get on and get off at the next stop to make sure the bell is working.

Fantastic experience: Who work there help you and answer all your questions

Fantastic experience: Reading has a really good bus service. Nice one guys

Fantastic experience: Great bus service in the U.K.

Fantastic experience: Can I just congratulate one of your drivers Dawn Daniell who helped me out on Monday evening at Ikea bus stop I had purchased a rug and I needed to travel to Southcote via number 26 bus route and was told by male driver I could not travel on bus because rug would not fit into blue bag provided by ikea although bus empty and likely to stay that way for my short journey. Feeling quite desperate and vulnerable when Dawn pulled up shortly after around 6.30pm she assessed the situation and used common sense and decided it would be safe for me to travel with my rug as long as I. Didn't block the ilsle which was not a problem as bus empty and remained so throughout my journey, her main concern was for my personal safety and she pointed out it was hardly like trying to carry a wardrobe onto bus. Thank goodness some of your staff can exercise discretion and common sense whilst delivering a good customer led service. Again I would be grateful for you to pass on my appreciation to Dawn for her kindness. I believe good service should be recognised.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

15 Travel Books That Will Give You Serious Wanderlust

A man walking in a library full of books

The end of the year is just that time for favorites lists – and I’ve written about the best travel books many times over! I love talking about travel books. Why? Because part of the tool belt of any traveler is a good book. Long bus, train, or plane rides can get pretty boring and can give you a lot of “dead” time if you haven’t mastered the art of the 10-hour blank stare. Additionally, reading travel books helps you learn about the destinations you are visiting. The more you know about a place, the more you can understand a place.

I am a voracious reader and even used to have a book club on this website where I shared all the books I read. Today is another one of those days where I share some of the books I’ve read recently! If you’re looking for some great reads, here are my current list of the best travel books to inspire you to travel to far-off lands:

1. The Alchemist , by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist

2. Love With a Chance of Drowning , by Torre DeRoche

3. The Caliph’s House: A Year in Casablanca  by Tahir Shah

BONUS: Ten Years a Nomad: A Traveler’s Journey Home , by me!

Ten Years a Nomad by Matt Kepnes

Books about travel inspire us to go visit far-off lands and imagine us doing incredible things. Bryson’s In a Sunburned Country inspired me to visit Australia! I hope these travel books inspire you to travel the world and feed your wanderlust. If you have any suggestions that I can add to this best travel books list, leave them in the comments.

If you’d like to see some of the other books I’ve recommended (or are currently reading), check out this page I created on Amazon that lists them all!

You can also find them listed in our Bookshop store, which helps support locally-owned bookstores. If you’re in the US, click here to check out my Bookshop store!

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

Hotels in Reading

Travelodge Reading Central

Reading is a busy riverside town packed with historical sights, a large university and some of the most exciting attractions in the UK. A great place to choose if you're looking for hotels in Berkshire, the surrounding area is filled with things to do and see and from here you can also take a day trip to London with ease, making a Reading hotel the ideal base if you want a great range of activities right on your doorstep.

Cheap hotels in Reading

There's so much choice. The Travelodge Reading Central offers all the convenience you'd expect from a city centre hotel. If you're here to visit students, then Travelodge Reading Whitley is perfectly placed close to the University of Reading. Of course, one of the best things about choosing to stay in Reading is that there are hotels near Thorpe Park and Legoland: must-visit attractions for adults and kids alike! For those wanting a quieter stay with a historical flavour, then you'll want to stay by Windsor Castle.

Things to do in Reading

A trip to Reading wouldn't be complete if you didn't go to the elegant Basildon Park. But there are plenty more child-friendly attractions on offer, like the Cole Museum of Zoology and the Museum of Rural Life. For a traditional day out, start with 12th-century Reading Abbey, right in the centre of town. If you like life on the water, you won't want to miss the Reading Rowing Club and Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake. While football fans should head to the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading Football Club. So whether you want to focus your stay around sports, strolling in beautiful surroundings or screaming on thrilling rides, Reading is definitely the destination for you.

Heading out of town for the holidays? According to AAA , an estimated 115 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles or more over the holidays, marking the second highest year for travel since 2000 and a 2.2 percent increase from last year.

The holiday travel estimates means that you can likely expect long lines at airports and traffic jams on the road — depending on which day you decide to leave.

A Music Fan’s Ultimate Travel Bucket List

Trending on billboard.

When is the best time to hit the road? If you’re traveling by car, you should aim to leave in the early morning or after 7 p.m. local time. If you plan on driving, Dec. 23 and 28 are expected to be the busiest traffic days, per AAA.

Christmas and New Year’s Eve are two of the busiest travel periods of the year and with gas prices hitting a new low for the holidays , an estimated 104 million people will be on the road. Although overall travel costs are higher than usual, there’s still time left to score deals on hotels, airline tickets, rental cars and more through sites such as Expedia , Booking.com , Travelocity , Priceline and Groupon .

Traveling can be overwhelming, any time of year, but there are tips that can help relieve some of your anxiety like making sure that you have everything needed for your upcoming trip. To make the travel process a little easier, we’ve put together a list of travel necessities to take on your flight, cruise or road trip.

Travel Backpack

First on the list: travel gear! This backpack has a USB charging port and roomy interior that fits a 15.6 inch laptop. The top-rated, travel backpack snagged 3,200 ratings on Amazon and 4.7 out of five stars.

Airline passengers are allowed to bring one carry-on and a small personal item, including a purse or tote bag or travel backpack like the one feature above or a more expensive options such as the Troubadour Momentum Backpack ($275) . See more travel backpack options here .

Not sure what you can and can’t bring on the plane? Be sure to review the TSA travel guidelines , and don’t forget to put an AirTag or another kind of GPS tracker in your luggage , especially if you plan on checking bags.

Comfortable Shoes

Sneakers, UGGs or slides? No matter your style preference, comfortable shoes are a must-have for travel.

Crocs are great because they’re comfortable enough for just about any kind of low-impact activity, whether its travel or leisure. Plus, you can get them in a ton of different colors and sizes.

When it comes to picking a comfortable sneakers and slides for travel, Adidas , Nike and New Balance are a few of the major brands you should look into.

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly option, Cariuma off-white canvas sneakers are one of the brand’s most popular options. Apart from being incredibly comfortable for traveling, the shoe is affordable and sustainable (it’s made from recycled plastics, bamboo knit, a sugarcane outsole and cork insole). Cariuma sneakers are available over a dozen different colors including white, black, yellow, pink, red, green and grey. The eco-friendly brand makes low-tops, high-tops and slip-on shoes in men’s sizes and women’s sizes.

Toiletry Travel Bag

This bag pictured above includes four compartments for your toiletries, makeup and other items. The bag is available in nearly a dozen different colors including black, white, grey, pink, blue, red, and purple.

Traveling by car? Be sure to keep snacks , travel toiletries and other things you might need within arm’s reach, so that they’re easily accessible while you drive. (Need a handbag holder for the car? Click here .)

Tablet Streaming Device

Whether you’re traveling by car, bus, plane or train, you’ll need a streaming device. Although you can stream mostly anything from a smart phone, it doesn’t hurt to have an iPad , Kindle , Samsung Galaxy Tab or another kind of notebook such as the Microsoft Surface Pro or Amazon Fire 8 .

Traveling by plane? Most streaming platforms allow subscribers to access in-flight Wifi and download content that can be streamed while your device is in airplane mode.

Binge your favorite shows and movies on Prime Video , Paramount+ , Disney+ , Apple TV+ and other streaming platforms while you travel.

Delta and other airlines provide in-flight entertainment on domestic flights, while American Airlines makes passengers stream from their own devices. If you plan on flying AA, be sure to have a smart phone, notebook or tablet device handy, along with a charging cable or portable charger ; an Airplane Phone Holder Mount , and a travel adapter if you’re traveling internationally.

Headphones or Earbuds

Headphones have are essential, regardless of how you travel. And they’re especially useful for binge watching content, jamming away to music, streaming podcasts and more, without disturbing those around you.

If you prefer earbuds , Beats Studio Buds , Apple AirPods , Google Pixel Buds and Sony LinkBuds are some of the better options on the market.

A Good Book

A long flight might be the only time you get to relax and read a good book! Kindle , Nook Glow and other gadgets have made it easy to read digitally, but for those of you who still enjoy reading physical books, the New York Times Best-Sellers List acts as a great reading guide.

Currently on the NYT ‘s list: Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning by Liz Chainey, Britney Spears’ The Woman in Me, Barbra Streissand’s My Name is Barbra , Mathew Perry’s Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing . Spears’ memoir, The Woman In Me , was released in October and remains on the NYT list and Amazon’s bestseller’s list .

Travel Pillow and Blanket

Don’t skip the cozy section! No matter which climate you plan to travel to, make sure to pack a warm and cozy travel blanket (and matching pillow) .

The EverSnug travel blanket and pillow combo is available in a variety of colors including teal, pink, black, grey, burgundy, navy blue and other colors. If you’re not interested in a matching travel pillow, you can always rock with a traditional neck pillow .

Disinfectant Wipes

The pandemic made us more aware of spreading germs. Airplanes and hotels get professional cleaning, but it’s good to have your own disinfectant wipes , hand sanitizer or anti-bacterial spray on hand. Clean Boss hand sanitizer wipes are made to last up to six hours, which is much longer than your average, alcohol-based hand sanitizer that usually evaporates within seconds (sanitizing wipes and disinfecting sprays can also be used to clean your luggage once you get back from your trip).

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

While I love my hectic travel schedule, it’s a constant struggle to find new comfy styles that look good, pack easily, and are versatile enough to style in fresh ways. With several summer trips on the horizon, I’ve been on the hunt for dresses, pants, and walking shoes that fit the bill.

Luckily, Nordstrom just dropped tons of summer pieces from shopper-loved brands like Free People, Sam Edelman, and more. I’m grabbing linen pants , lightweight cardigans , and slide sandals to pack for my three upcoming trips while they’re on sale. Keep scrolling to browse the 13 designs I’m adding to my own cart for up to 50 percent off.

  • Billabong Wild Pursuit Short Overalls , $40 (originally $56)
  • Steve Madden Amy Square Neck Wide-Leg Jumpsuit , $70 (originally $99)
  • Marc Fisher LTD Espina Mary Jane Flat , $70 (originally $120)
  • Caslon Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants , $45 (originally $59)
  • Caslon Stripe Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants , $45 (originally $59)
  • Sam Edelman Bridget Slide Sandal , $50 (originally $130)
  • Free People Robyn Cotton Blend Crop Cardigan , from $59 (originally $98)
  • Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal , $84 (originally $120)

  • Sam Edelman Kara 2 Slingback Flats , $98 (originally $140)
  • Topshop Wide-Leg Trousers , $45 (originally $60)
  • B.P. Twill Short Overalls , $30 (originally $60)
  • Faherty Dream Organic Cotton Gauze Midi Dress , $120 (originally $218)

B.P. Twill Short Overalls

Overalls are a fun style to mix in when you’ve tired of the same flowy dresses in your suitcase. This 60 percent-off design is no exception. In fact, they have a five-star rating, which shoppers chalked up to their “large deep pockets” and “comfortable material.” One person even added that they “can’t wait to wear” the overalls on their “next trip.” The cotton-spandex fabric has the perfect stretch and oversized feel, while the square neck and adjustable straps make it a flattering choice.

Caslon Stripe Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants

Everyone needs a casual yet comfy pair of linen pants, especially if you’re heading to a beach this summer. While I’m a fan of several Caslon wide-leg styles, including this classic black pair from the brand, this striped linen blend design is at the top of my wish list right now. One customer called them the “perfect” summer pants and said they’re planning to pack them for “Europe this summer,” while another added that the “material is nicer” than other linen styles they own and doesn’t “appear to wrinkle.”

Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal

For as long as I can remember, these Sam Edelman slides have been a staple in my summer wardrobe. In fact, I’ved owned the sandals in three different colors. They’re so easy to toss on when you’re headed out the door, and the design offers an elevated look. Plus, the style comes in nine on-sale colors as well as six full-priced shades. Shoppers raved about the “comfortable” shoes, and said they have “enough cushion and support for easy walking.

Faherty Dream Organic Cotton Gauze Midi Dress

This organic cotton midi dress was practically made for summer travel. The breezy style is so easy to toss on after a day at the beach or to wear during a flight. The V-neck provides a flattering design while the three-quarter sleeves add a little extra coverage for chillier summer nights. The on-sale white color is easy to style for any occasion: You can dress it up with a pair of heels and accessories, or toss on casual sneakers or sandals for a low-key evening.

Head over to Nordstrom’s site to shop the sale for yourself, or keep reading for more of my personal favorites, including breezy pants, comfy sandals, and more.

Getting around in the Faroe Islands (one top tip: watch out for sheep!)

Laura Hall

The Faroe Islands archipelago is better connected than you might expect © Bastian Linder / 500px / Getty Images

For a small nation spread across 18 different isles, you might be surprised to find out how easy it is to get around the Faroe Islands .

The archipelago is connected by ferry and subsea tunnels and is home to the world’s first undersea roundabout. Roads are paved all over the islands, making them suitable for all vehicles and even hardy cyclists. Public transport options also abound, with city buses and rural buses connecting communities, with a helicopter service for locals and visitors too.

A sheep and lamb on a rural roadside in the Faroe Islands

For maximum flexibility, rent a car

It’s never been more true that the journey is the destination than when you’re driving around the Faroe Islands. If your nerves can take it, you’ll be well rewarded as you zigzag down switchback roads with a view of sea stacks and islands, skirt fjords, and plunge through undersea tunnels and boreholes through mountains en route to small communities, beaches, scenic views and more. It’s the most time-efficient way to get around if you’re only coming for a short trip, allowing you to change plans easily if you need to. The Faroe Islands has several scenic drives, called  Sóljuleiðir (buttercup routes), marked on maps and signs with a buttercup, the country’s national flower.

Car rental is available at the airport and in Tórshavn ; you’re advised to book ahead. Electric cars are offered by a handful of rental companies including  Berg Hestar  and  62North . At present there are at least four charging spots on the islands with more coming, but the introduction of electric cars is still in its infancy.

Driving tips: watch out for sheep!

Some things to know before you put your pedal to the metal: driving in the Faroe Islands has a few rules you need to adhere to. Drive on the right. Keep your lights on at all times. Using your phone at the wheel and driving with alcohol in your system are both illegal.

Drive carefully and stop often, using the laybys to pull over when faster local cars are behind you. Some roads are single-track; some of the mountain tunnels are as well, even though traffic flows in both directions, so drive at a safe speed and be alert for passing places.

Sheep are a constant feature of the roads, and in spring, lambs gambol all over the place, including in front of cars. If you hit one, you must call the police on +298 351448 and inform them. You are not liable for the cost of the unfortunate sheep; this allows the farmer to claim on their insurance.

If you’re parking in Tórshavn, Klaksvík or at Vágar airport, you will need to use a parking disc to show what time you parked, as parking rules apply. Elsewhere, it’s not an issue.

A ferry emerges from the sea fog in the Faroe Islands

Catch the ferry for a budget-friendly cruise

Local ferry routes in the Faroe Islands allow you to take a car with you and explore for as little as 15 kr per trip. Routes are publicized on ssl.fo ; note that there is seasonal variation in terms of frequency. A multi-day travel card covers ferries as well as buses, or you can pay per trip. Typically you just pay one-way.

The exception to this is the ferry to Mykines, which is not included in the travel card. It runs daily from May to August, three times a week in April and September, and not in the winter. Rates are around 60 kr each way. For this and any other ferry routes, it’s a good idea to book your trip early into your stay, so that it can be rebooked if bad weather stops play. Cancellations are common.

Remember to pay tolls on undersea routes

There are four undersea tunnels in the Faroe Islands and they are easy to navigate. All tunnels require a toll; the most expensive is the undersea roundabout, Eysturoyartunnilin. You can pay the fee online or at a petrol station; perhaps the easiest way to do it is to add the tunnels to your rental car bill and pay at the end.

An empty bus stop in the Faroe Islands

On a budget? Bus routes are your savior

Blue coaches ply the islands’ rural roads while free red buses operate in towns; with a little advance planning and enough time, they can be a great way to reduce your costs. On entry to Vágar airport, there is a direct bus route into Tórshavn.

In Tórshavn itself, a lot of the main bus routes are set up so you can do an easy day trip from the town to key attractions, including Gásadalur. For your best options, look at the timetables on ssl.fo . Buses run all over the islands and are generally reliable and on time. The drawback is often the weather, and a sometimes limited timetable.

Public transport passes are available online and at the ferry terminals, allowing you to travel on all bus and ferry routes (with the exception of the ferry to Mykines) for 500 kr for 4 days.

How do you book a helicopter trip in the Faroe Islands?

Helicopter transport is highly subsidized in the Faroe Islands to allow local people to get around easily, but while it was once an option for tourists to enjoy the same service, it is now discouraged so that local people can benefit from it. For visitors, it’s still possible to book a helicopter flight one way (you will have to return by bus or ferry) to larger towns, including Klaksvík and Tórshavn, for around 645 kr one way. A timetable is available online at Atlantic Airways and there are restrictions about how far in advance you can book. The airline also offers a range of sightseeing trips by helicopter.

A cyclist stops on the road to admire a mountain view in the Faroe Islands

Can you cycle in the Faroe Islands?

Yes! With paved roads, sweeping hills and majestic scenery, on a good day, cycling in the Faroe Islands can’t be beaten. Bike rental is available in Tórshavn, with mountain bikes and e-bikes available, along with bike tours, and you can even take a bike on the bus for free if there's enough room onboard.

ARA Tours  offer guided day tours and bike rentals, as do operators via  Guide to Faroe Islands , but for serious cyclists, bringing your own bike is a good option. Bikepacking is a niche but growing way to explore the islands, although at present there are no outfitters offering luggage transfers. Bike lights are required; roads are safe and usually quiet but cycling through tunnels, especially narrow one-way mountain tunnels, takes a little nerve. You can also cycle the undersea tunnels. Note that off-road biking is prohibited; it’s road biking only and there are no cycle paths.

Accessible transportation in the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands is a little limited in terms of accessible transport options, although there are some accessible hotels, restaurants and cultural centers. City buses accommodate wheelchairs; rural buses/coaches do not. Ferries have elevators and wheelchair-friendly ramps. Local group MEGD can provide more information about accessible transport on the Faroe Islands. You can also consult our accessible travel resource page .

The Best Travel Tote Bags Stylishly Hold It All

Picks from Bottega Veneta, Rimowa, Cuyana, and more

Plane, train, or automobile—however you’re planning to head out of town for the weekend, you’ll need the best travel tote with you, to house the essentials. Having used a tote as a carry-on to load up my headphones and neck pillow, and another as my only bag for a long weekend away, I can vouch for the versatility tote bags can provide when you’re on the go. Look in my closet and you’ll find a handful of options, ranging from a luxury Celine carryall to a practical Cuyana bag.

Classic Easy Zipper Tote

The Tote in Woven Natural Fiber

Best Natural-Fiber Travel Tote

Hunting season the tote in woven natural fiber.

With a range of sizes, strap lengths, and materials, the list ahead offers a comprehensive set of options for weekend trips, longer getaways (with a designer suitcase , of course), and anything in between. With summer getaways on the horizon, you’ll be ready to travel in style, without having to worry that your bag will slide under the seat in front of you.

The long, lean profile of this leather travel tote easily slips under a seat without a fight, and it has a top zipper to secure belongings. Plus, it comes in a range of colors and varying silhouettes to suit all preferences.

Dimensions: 12.3" x 21.6" x 5.1"

Colors: Terra-cotta, black, caramel, dark olive, and more

What reviewers are saying: “I’ve been using the original classic zipper tote for years for travel, and decided to give the new tote a try. I like the new straps, which are easier on the shoulder when I’ve got heavy items to carry, and I love the color (Biscuit). I like having the zipper for keeping my belongings in place when passing through airport security machines and for stowing under the seat in front of me on the airplane.”

I fell in love with Caraa’s durable-yet-sleek recycled nylon bags while trying out stylish diaper bags , and ever since, I’ve been a devotee. I love the rounded silhouette of this spacious but not overly large tote. It feels unique, is super luxe-looking, and offers tons of function, from its lightweight padded design to the 10-plus compartments and multiple straps.

Dimensions: 12.5" x 15.75" x 7"

Colors: Black

What reviewers are saying: “Excellent travel bag. I took it on a recent trip and it was perfect. Love the mesh pockets, the passport pocket and lab top pocket. Just a perfect travel companion!”

“Woven by hand and accented with one-of-a-kind tagua seeds, the tote is a master class in modern travel style,” says Corona. The fiber material is lightweight yet durable, great for days when you’re packing relatively light and need a bag that can make it through work and travel with you.

Colors: Stripe, brown, natural

Calpak Luka Duffel

Luka Duffel

This bag was my introduction to Calpak, and needless to say, I’m obsessed. It’s so lightweight and spacious, with a secure top zipper, side zip pocket, and sleeve to stay put on my roller bag. I tend to be a heavy packer, especially when attempting only to carry on. I can fit so much in this bag, which fits easily under an airplane seat, even when it’s filled to the brim.

Dimensions: 12" x 16" x 7"

Colors: Chocolate, black, rose, oatmeal, and more

What reviewers are saying: “This bag is more spacious than I imagined it would be. I was shocked how much I could pack in it. I love the shape, structure, color, fabric, luggage sleeve, pockets, and how lightweight it is. It’s truly an amazing piece! My 15 inch MacBook even fits in the outside pocket. It’s a tight fit, but it’s a fit. Worth every penny!”

Prada Re-Edition 1978 Large Re-Nylon and Saffiano Tote

Re-Edition 1978 Large Re-Nylon and Saffiano Tote

There’s no designer tote bag more durable or beloved than Prada’s Re-Nylon. The black is fail-safe and great for travel, no question. But I can’t help but love the beige as a fresh alternative.

Dimensions: 11.4" x 13.8" x 5.9"

Colors: Black, navy, cork beige

9 New Travel Books to Read This Summer

F or some travelers, a summer "beach read" is the print equivalent of junk food. Others aim higher: Lin-Manuel Miranda first encountered the story of Alexander Hamilton while vacationing in Mexico, reading the 800+ pages of Ron Chernow's biography. The following selection of nine new recommended reads released in 2024 are diverse but share one quality: All are rooted in place, whether it's rural Sicily, South Africa, Paris, or New York City. Let them inspire your next trip.

Patterns of Portugal by Christine Chitnis

  • Location: Portugal
  • Type: Photography book
  • Buy now: bookshop.org

It's said you can't judge a book by its cover. But the front of Patterns of Portugal perfectly summarizes the contents and subtitle: A Journey Through Colors, History, Tiles, and Architecture. It depicts part of the blue-and-white tiled exterior of the rococo 18th-century Catholic Igreja do Carmo in Porto. A more conventional photo would show the ornate front. But Chitnis focuses on a side wall.

The book's 200+ photographs are divided among five chapters based on such colors as terra-cotta and verde. This is a scrubbed-up Portugal: no trash on the streets, no tourist hordes, no gray skies. The photos are the stars, with informative captions. The limited text includes one-page overviews of azulejos, cuisine, textile arts, and several other topics.

Footnotes From the Most Fascinating Museums by Bob Eckstein

  • Location: North America
  • Type: Art book

This delightful compendium covers 70+ museums in North America, nearly all in the United States. Besides the usual suspects (Met in NYC, Art Institute of Chicago) are some quirky selections (Graceland as a "Historic Home," SPAM Museum) and others that may be new to you (Peabody Essex Museum, Greenfield Village, American Writers Museum). Most include an intriguing quote about the museum by staff or visitors. Yes, it's highly subjective, as the author/illustrator explains in his introduction, but from the funny foreword on, it's an entertaining guide. It will increase your must-see list.

Paradise of the Damned by Keith Thomson

  • Location: South America and London, England
  • Type: Biography/History

The subtitle is The True Story of an Obsessive Quest for El Dorado, the Legendary City of Gold , but it could be "People Will Do Anything for Gold." This absorbing account focuses on several attempts by Sir Walter Raleigh to locate a hidden city of gold in uncharted Guyana. What doesn't go wrong? While trying to beat Spanish rivals to the elusive prize, he's also dealing with royal politics back in London with Queen Elizabeth and King James. His first voyage and expedition to South America occur in 1595; he's still searching in 1618. Spoiler alert: Things don't end well.

The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza

  • Location: Sicily, Italy
  • Type: Historical mystery

In alternating chapters, Jo Piazza weaves a story of Serafina, native of Sicily, and Sara, her American-born great granddaughter, who travels to the island for answers to questions about her family and land she may have inherited. Both are wives, mothers, and workers, but their stories occur a century apart. Most of the novel takes place in Caltabellessa, a fictional hill village. It's a family saga with romance, history, crime, mystery-and maybe one too many plot twists and coincidences. But you'll be rooting for these two smart, determined women as they struggle against a society undermining their ambitions.

Amphibious Soul by Craig Foster

  • Location: Atlantic Ocean and South Africa
  • Type: Memoir

Craig Foster is best-known for his Academy Award–winning documentary My Octopus Teacher . His decades as a filmmaker in southern Africa inform this memoir about his search to connect with wilderness. Daily cold ocean dives and learning the skills of tracking animals are among the ways he finds rejuvenation in nature. Conservation and support for biodiversity are key concerns. Besides photos of sea life, the book has a QR code linking to 27 short videos from Foster's work over the past 25 years. Vivid minutes of jellyfish, crocodiles, octopuses, and other animals are a wonderful bonus.

Koreaworld: A Cookbook by Deuki Hong and Matt Rodbard

  • Location: Korea and its diaspora
  • Type: Cookbook

Chef Deuki Hong and journalist Matt Rodbard (founding editor of Taste , a James Beard Award–winning food magazine) team up again. (Their best-selling Koreatown looked at U.S. Korean American communities.) This time they range from Seoul to NYC with recipes that pay tribute to barbecue (smoked ribs cooked over hay), seafood and plant-based dishes, and modern takes on classics. With recipes that include ingredients like 7Up and preparations like Radish Kimchi Granita, this collection has a sense of fun. There's even Taco Bell Bibimbap and street food inspired by K-pop. In addition to some 75 recipes, Koreaworld looks at Korean food's expansion and evolution worldwide and includes conversations with leading chefs.

Bird Milk & Mosquito Bones by Priyanka Mattoo

  • Location: Around the world
  • Preorder now (out June 18): bookshop.org

Some two dozen short essays of immigrant/nomad life for one family from India make up this memoir. They range in setting from Saudi Arabia to England, Italy, Los Angeles, and other places Mattoo called "home" for a time. In 40 years, she had 32 addresses. The essays, not in chronological order, lend themselves to dipping here and there, depending on what titles intrigue you: "Astrocartography," "American Sigh," "A Remarkably Self-Assured Debut." Throughout, Mattoo is a wise, observant guide who has kept her sense of humor intact despite various challenges in her peripatetic life.

The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl

  • Location: Paris, France
  • Type: Historical fiction

This is less a novel than a fairy-tale, but fans of French cuisine and art, Paris, and/or Ruth Reichl won't mind the coincidences and other implausibilities as a poor orphan drudge transforms into a princess. The once upon a time setting is the 1980s. During her first trip to Paris, Stella St. Vincent from New York City encounters people who wear couture clothes and drink fine vintages with their gourmet cuisine. They know lots about art and literature. The key unlocking this world for Stella is a vintage Dior dress with almost magical properties. It's an ideal escape when a tiny bag of pretzels is a highlight of your long-delayed flight.

How to Find Old New York by Herb Lester Associates

  • Location: New York City
  • Type: Guidebook
  • Preorder now (out July 10): herblester.com

Herb Lester, the London-based publisher, produces unique maps for various European and U.S. cities. Its clever NYC guidebook-an updated version out June 20-is printed on card stock and has a map and hand-drawn illustrations. Here, "Old New York" often means south of Central Park. The focus is on food and drink at places where no one "curated" the menu: B&H Kosher Dairy Restaurant, Dublin House, Donohue's Steak House, Arturo's Coal Oven Pizza, plus better-known spots like the oyster bar at Grand Central and Sardi's-all with suggestions of what to note and/or order. The Strand and Argosy bookstores and Casa Magazines are included, too.

Book lovers will enjoy other Herb Lester guides with literary themes, such as The Raymond Chandler Map of Los Angeles , The World of Patricia Highsmith , and Douglas Adams' London .

There's something here for you, whether you're in the mood for historical fiction, a memoir, or biography this summer.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people stranded off the coast of Mexico

travel shop reading

A Carnival Cruise Line ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard and rescued 25 people stranded in a small boat off the coast of Mexico, the company announced Saturday.

The 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance had left Long Beach, California, on Friday and was heading toward Ensenada Mexico for a three-day sailing when the cruise ship's officers were informed by the Coast Guard "about a distress call involving a small vessel," a news release said.

The ship immediately routed toward the location of the vessel, provided by the USCG, and "quickly" rescued all 25 people on board, including three children, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

The rescued group was welcomed onto the cruise ship and given food, water, and medical assistance. Carnival coordinated with the Coast Guard to hand off the group.

The incident did not disrupt the Carnival Radiance's schedule, the company announced.

Another Carnival ship rescued a group of 28 Cuban nationals stuck at sea as it was sailing the Caribbean and saw people signaling for help in late April. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time. Also last month, a Celebrity Cruises ship sailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to multiple destinations in the Caribbean rescued a small vessel adrift between Mexico and Cuba.

Wolves agree deal to sign Rodrigo Gomes from Braga

Wolverhampton Wanderers have overcome competition from a host of clubs to agree a deal with Braga to sign wide player Rodrigo Gomes.

The 20-year-old Portugal youth international is on course to join for €15million (£12.7m), with personal terms in place on a five-year contract that includes an option to extend by 12 months.

He is set to travel to the West Midlands in the early part of next week to complete a medical.

Gomes attracted significant interest from a range of suitors including Atletico Madrid, Bournemouth and teams in Germany. He is considered an exciting prospect, having represented his country from Under-16 to Under-21 level.

Having risen through the ranks at Braga, Gomes spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Estoril — scoring nine goals and providing eight assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

Should everything go to plan, Gomes will move to Molineux following a 14th-place finish for Gary O’Neil’s men in the English top-flight last season.
