Unsung Hero of the '90s: The 1994 GMC Safari Van

The 1994 GMC Safari Van may not be the first vehicle that comes to mind when you think of classic cars, but it certainly deserves a spot in the annals of automotive history. Born from the collaboration between General Motors and its GMC division, the Safari Van was a workhorse that combined functionality with comfort, offering a versatile solution for families and businesses alike. This mid-sized van carved out its niche during a time when the market was dominated by minivans and large SUVs. A unique fact that might pique your interest: the GMC Safari and its sibling, the Chevrolet Astro, were among the first mid-sized vans to offer all-wheel drive, making them pioneers in enhancing driver confidence under various conditions.

Design and Innovation

The exterior of the 1994 GMC Safari Van was characterized by its boxy yet robust stance, a testament to the design trends of the era. It featured a long, flat nose with a sizable windshield that provided excellent visibility. The interior was surprisingly spacious, with room for up to eight passengers or a generous cargo area if the seats were removed. The materials used inside were typical for the time—durable and functional, with an emphasis on longevity over luxury. Technologically, the Safari boasted features like power windows and locks, which were high-tech for a mid-90s utility vehicle. Color options ranged from the understated to the bold, with shades like Dark Carmine Red and Light Quasar Blue being popular picks. The most iconic body style was undoubtedly the passenger version, which found its way into countless American driveways.

Historical Significance

The GMC Safari's impact on automotive design may not have been revolutionary, but its blend of van utility with all-wheel-drive capability set it apart from other vehicles of its time. It offered a middle ground between the burgeoning SUV segment and traditional vans, providing an alternative for those seeking four-season capability without resorting to a truck-based vehicle. This approach would later be echoed in crossover designs that dominate today's market.

Performance and Handling

Performance-wise, the 1994 GMC Safari wasn't a speed demon, but it offered respectable performance for a vehicle of its size and purpose. While top speed and acceleration figures (0-60 mph) were modest, the van's 4.3-liter V6 engine provided enough grunt for everyday tasks. Handling was what you might expect from a mid-90s van—stable and predictable rather than sporty. The ride was comfortable, absorbing bumps with ease, while the sound of the engine provided a reassuring backdrop to any journey. Driving the Safari was about utility and reliability, not thrills.

Ownership Experience

The Safari Van was commonly used as a daily driver, capable of handling family duties, business needs, or even serving as a makeshift camper for weekend adventurers. Its maintenance and reliability were hallmarks of GMC's commitment to utility vehicles, with parts being readily available and repairs generally straightforward. This made the Safari an appealing choice for those who valued practicality over prestige.

While not known for breaking speed records or starring in blockbuster movies, the GMC Safari has its share of fun trivia. For instance, it was a popular choice among North American families for road trips thanks to its spacious interior and reliability. Although not commonly associated with celebrities, it was often seen in the background of films and TV shows depicting everyday life in the '90s. Despite some criticisms over time about its fuel economy and aging design, the Safari remained a dependable choice for many.

Collector's Information

As of today, the 1994 GMC Safari Van is more likely to be seen on the road than in a collector's showroom. However, well-preserved examples can fetch a modest sum from enthusiasts of '90s nostalgia or those seeking a practical classic. With production numbers in the hundreds of thousands over its lifespan, rarity isn't a selling point for this van. However, its durability means that many are still on the road today. In terms of value, one could expect to pay anywhere from a few thousand dollars for a well-used model to perhaps $10,000 or more for a mint-condition example.

The 1994 GMC Safari Van may not have been a headline-stealer in its heyday, but its contribution to the automotive landscape is undeniable. Offering a balance between capability and practicality, it served as a precursor to today's versatile family vehicles. For those who remember or still enjoy the distinct charm of this '90s workhorse, the Safari remains a beloved part of their automotive journey.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

1994 gmc safari specs

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

1994 gmc safari specs

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

1994 gmc safari specs

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

1994 gmc safari specs

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

1994 gmc safari specs

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

1994 gmc safari specs

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

1994 gmc safari specs

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
