Yes, malachite is pretty versatile. It works well with copper-based crystals, other green crystals or earth element stones, but can be paired with any of these “Safe Travel” crystals. Don’t use it in elixirs though.

I found your site by accident (or maybe the crystals pointed me to you) I am travelling to Canada on my own so require protection. I asked the crystals that I already had but they did not seem happy – as I was in town I went to a crystal shop (used before) for a piece of Malachite, while there two more crystals made themselves known to me so I purchased them and brought them home. I now feel that I can travel more easily and be less nervous.

18 Comforting Bible Verses For Protection when traveling

Traveling may at times evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, or uncertainty. God in His wisdom knew that we may experience these emotions from time to time and has provided encouragement, counsel, and comfort through the holy scriptures.

The Bible has a number of passages that point to the fact that the Lord is always with us in our going out and in our coming in.

It is the Lord who guides and protects us while we travel. In the King James Version of Matthew 28:20 Jesus made a promise that “lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”.

The Lord is not slack concerning His promises. All we have to do is trust in Him for protection and He will guide us each step of the way.

In the book of Proverbs, we are told to trust in the Lord and He will direct our path. The English Standard Version puts it this way, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”. Proverbs 3:5-6

There is great comfort in knowing that we serve an omnipresent God who is not just everywhere but takes a deep interest in our wellbeing. The Heavenly Father carefully guards us, He goes before us, and He is beside us.

With His constant presence, we can be confident that wherever we go we will have a safe journey thanks to the watchful eye of our Lord.

Luke 4:10 NIV : God’s angels will shield you

“For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;”  

In the gospel of Luke, the word of God gives the assurance that the Lord will command His angels to carefully guard and protect you. There is no need to be anxious or fearful because the Lord has assigned spiritual bodyguards to escort you and provide invisible protection.

Bullets, accidents, and other man-made devices have no power over the entourage of angels who are tasked with your protection as you embark on very risky journeys in remote places or volatile areas.

Proverbs 3:23 NIV : You are under The Lord’s protection “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.”  

This text offers counsel on how to ensure you have a safe journey without being sidetracked by obstacles and barriers. In verse twenty-one, two important things are mentioned wisdom and discretion.

Wisdom and discretion will ensure that you are guided by sound reason as you embark on your journey. In addition, wisdom comes from the Lord which means you should consult God before any undertaking in order to be shielded from unforeseen danger while traveling.

Proverbs 3:26 NIV: God’s hand will shelter you. “for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.”  

This text has a comforting promise that offers protection. Reflecting on this verse will keep you in good spirits as you prepare for long journeys. The Lord will bless you with sunshine, good weather, smooth traffic, a safe flight, and anything else you need while traveling.

This is also a great text if you will be traveling alone. Not having a companion on a trip may make you feel somewhat uncomfortable especially if you don’t know where you are going.

However, there is no need to worry because Jesus Christ will travel with you each step of the way and ensure that you get to your final destination safely.

Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV : You are entrusted to God’s care. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”  

This is one of those Bible verses that speaks true peace to the mind and dispel anxiety and fear. Knowing that the Lion of Judah, the Prince of Peace, and the God of Hosts is with you is very comforting.

There is no need to worry about uncertainties. There is no reason to be fearful of the outcome because Jehovah is on the same journey to secure safe travel in your going out and in your coming in.

Psalm 139:9-10 NIV : Jesus will secure and guard you. “If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, ¹⁰ even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”  

There is no place in the world where you may go and not have the assurance that the Lord is watching over you. The psalmist understood this and in return decided to express the words in this passage.

This verse is especially calming for individuals who are uncomfortable with plane rides or traveling by ship. If you travel to the highest point in the sky or take a long expedition by sea the hands of the Lord will guide and uphold you.

God’s word has a number of verses that may be used as prayer requests for safe travel. You may want a verse for safe driving, a text to prayerfully reflect on while flying, or a short verse to prepare you mentally for a camping or hiking trip.

Psalm 91:1-2 NIV : The Lord’s watchful eye will guide and protect you

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. ² I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  

This text is a beautiful prayer . You may repeat it word for word with conviction or you may use it as a guide to form a prayer like the one below.

Dear Lord, help me to consistently dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. You are my refuge and I trust in You. Keep me under your wings as I travel today. I humbly ask these mercies in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalm 121:7-8 NIV : You are under God’s shield of protection. “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; ⁸ the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”  

This Psalm may be used as a short prayer for your children, family members , or anyone else who will be leaving your company to go on a journey.

You may repeat these words as you hug at the door, you may prayerfully chant them for a goodbye ritual, or you may use them to affirm your departing guests.

You may use this template while adding the person’s name.

O Lord, keep (insert name) from all harm and watch over (his/her) life. Watch over (his/her) going out and coming in both now and forevermore I ask in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Psalm 36:7 NIV : You are held within God’s protective embrace. “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

The Lord is gracious and merciful and you can always depend on Him for His keeping care, tender mercies, and protection. If you are about to start a journey or while traveling you may repeat this verse to acknowledge the blessings of the Lord and request His continued guidance.

O God, your everlasting love is priceless to us. We take refuge under the shadow of your wings as we travel today. Grant us your richest blessings we ask in the name of our Redeemer Jesus Christ. Amen.

I Peter 5:7 NIV : The grace of Christ Jesus will watch over you. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”  

Here is a short prayer you may say to quell any anxieties you may be having.

Merciful God, help me not to be anxious about my upcoming trip. I place all my travel plans, concerns, and cares in your steady hands and I will lay all my burdens at your feet. Send your Holy Spirit to comfort me. I humbly ask in Jesus’ name Amen.

Isaiah 41:10 NIV : Jesus’ divine grace will shield you from danger. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  

Here is a prayer that you may whisper to the Lord while using Isaiah 41:10 as a guide.

Dear God, I claim the promises in your word. You told me that I should not fear or be dismayed because You are with me and You are my God.

Give me the strength and help I need as I go on this journey and uphold me with your righteous right hand. I ask these journeying mercies in the name of Jesus. Amen

There is no need to fear evil when you travel through a dark valley or if you have to drive on dangerous roads. David was confident that even in the valley of the shadow of death evil would not harm him.

You too can have this confidence as you depend on the Lord of Lords to bless you with a safe trip.

Psalm 32:7 NIV : He will keep you out of harm’s way. “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

This Psalm speaks about the protection that is found in Jesus Christ. You can embark on any journey knowing that your safety is guaranteed.

There are instances where you may face obstacles but the word of God says that you will be protected from trouble and surrounded with deliverance.

Psalm 18:2 NIV : He will ensure your safety and security. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”  

It’s a breath of fresh air knowing that when you take God with you on a journey you can be relaxed and calm. He is your rock, a fortress of protection, a refuge, a shield, and a hiding place.

If a family trip or business trip doesn’t go the way you plan you can always lean on the Lord for a source of strength and guidance.

Psalm 119:105 NIV : The Lord will lead you on a safe road “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”  

It is important to take the word of God with you wherever you may go. This Psalm is a reminder that it will be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

Reflect on God’s word, repeat your favorite Bible verse, or prayerfully whisper a text for protection and the Lord will enlighten you as you travel.

A vacation may bring mixed emotions. You are excited to go and enjoy yourself as you relax but you may also get anxious as you plan and put your itinerary together.

Colossians 3:15 NIV : Be at peace because God is with you

Joshua 1:5 NIV : He will always be beside you, watching and protecting you “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  

Moses witnessed firsthand the protective and nurturing power of God. He was tremendously rescued from the River Nile as a baby. He saw the Lord destroy the pharaoh’s army at the Red Sea.

In a scorching wilderness, the Lord appeared as water that poured from a rock. He saw the constant presence of God as a shade by day and a flame by night.

Exodus 13:21 NIV :  God is with you day and night “By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”  

The many experiences of Moses display the interest that the Lord places in our protection and guidance as we travel physically and spiritually on our Christian journey . You too can be at peace knowing you serve the God of Moses.

Philippians 4:7 NIV :  Jesus will work things out “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  

As you put your travel itinerary together for your vacation you may get anxious wondering if everything will work out. You may start to think about how the weather may affect your plans or other little glitches that may come up.

You have promised me in Psalm 91:11 that you shall give your angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways. May your angels guard me and my family as we travel, and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. 

May your angels encamp around me throughout my trip, and deliver me from any harm that may be on my way. 

I also ask Lord that you would send your angels ahead of me. That they would make my trip smooth and full of your peace.

Prayer for God’s Presence on Your Journey

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV

Lord, you say in Deuteronomy 31:6 that I should be strong and courageous because you go with me wherever I go, and will never leave nor forsake me. May your presence be with me as I take this journey. 

I know that when you are with me I can rest because I am safe. Your presence gives me peace as I patiently wait to get to my destination. 

When the Israelites were in the wilderness for forty years, they never made a move unless they were sure that you were leading the way. Lead me as I travel, and let me experience the joy of being in your presence. 

Prayer for Wisdom and Protection While Driving

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

Lord, I praise you for your divine wisdom that is superior to my human wisdom. You have instructed me to ask you for wisdom in James 1:5 with the promise that you will give it to me. Today I ask that you give me the wisdom I need as I drive on my trip. 

Help me drive safely, to keep focus, and to avoid any dangers that could happen on the road.  Show me which routes to avoid, and how to navigate any traffic along the way. 

I also, ask that you would protect my car Heavenly Father. That I would have no issues with my vehicle while driving and you would give me wisdom when and where I should stop to rest and get gas.

Prayer for a Safe Flight

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, – Psalm 17:8 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I ask that you would be with me as I go on this flight. I pray that you would protect me and everyone on the airplane. I ask for a peaceful flight with no weather issues or turbulence. 

Lord give me peace throughout the duration of the flight and help to put my trust in You. Hide me beneath your wing where no enemy can find me. (Psalm 17:8)

Prayer for Straightening Your Path During Travel

Every valley shall be exalted, And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight, And the rough places smooth – Isaiah 40:4

Lord, you know all the obstacles, dangers, detours, and delays along the path I will take to my destination. 

I ask that you straighten my path so that I may have a smooth journey. Raise every valley, make every mountain low, straighten all crooked places, and make the rough places smooth (Isaiah 40:4).

Redirect me if I need to use another route, and remove any obstacles before I get there. Keep me from trouble! Go ahead of me and clear the way so that I will arrive in good time. 

Prayer for Blessing for Safe Travel

Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways – Psalm 128:1 NKJV

Lord, as you watch over me during my time of travel, I ask that you would bless this trip. That every where I go, every person I interact would be a blessing to me and I would be blessing to them.  I thank you for your help during my journey.  

Prayers for Protect of Sickness While Traveling

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. – psalm 91:5-7 NKJV

Lord, as I set out to travel I ask for your protection over my body. Protect me from any form of sickness that would try to attack me and cause me harm. I pray that you would strengthen my immune system and help me avoid any food that could hurt me. 

I ask for your blood to cover me, Jesus that no type of infection, virus, or physical accident would come near me. That your hedge of protection would be round about me. Thank you Lord, that I don’t have to fear and that nothing shall come near me. (Psalm 91:7)

Bonus Travel Prayer: Prayer for Safe Travel for a Loved One (Prayer for Traveling Mercies)

*This prayer can be used for a family member or friend. 

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, – 1 Timothy 2:1 NKJV

Heavenly Father, I lift up (insert name) today. I ask for them to have a safe trip and that you would protect them as they travel. Set your angels to go before them and with them as they go. Let no harm come near them and give them the grace they need.

Lord, I also ask that they would seek you while they travel and that they would experience your presence during this time. Draw them close to you and give them peace.

Praying as you travel will give you the assurance of the Lord’s protection. Regardless of your mode of transport…airplane, boat, car, etc…  prayer is very important as you travel. 

You don’t know what dangers that could be ahead that you need God’s help to overcome. God always protects us even from dangers we don’t know about. He is a good God!

I encourage you to pray the Word of God because it is powerful in the spirit realm. Trust that God will always be with you along the way, because He is. He has a purpose for your life, and wants you to fulfill and complete the assignment He has set for you on earth. 

And remember when you arrive safely, thank Him for watching over you every step of the way.  He desevers the praise!

So, I thought it would be fun and helpful to share a couple of Angelic Lightwork practices you can easily implement during your travels.

Invoking Angels While Traveling

First things first, relax. Because, as always, when calling in your angels, it helps to first let go, relax your mind and body, and focus within.

Archangel Michael and Your Guardian Angels

Next, ask your guardian angels and Archangel Michael to surround you and your entire vehicle with an orb of protective and uplifting light.

As soon as you do this by simply saying “Guardian Angels, Archangel Michael… Please (or thank you) for surrounding me, my vehicle and all passengers with an orb of uplifting and protecting light.”

As soon as you say that and ask, if you’re paying attention, you’ll notice a shift in the energy, as the angels on demand, surround you with that incredible blue, golden, and white protective and uplifting light of the divine.

Archangel Gabriel

Next, you can ask Archangel Gabriel to fly in front of your vehicle, cleansing out any lower vibrations, and paving the pathway for a smooth trip to wherever you’re headed.

Archangel Gabriel is connected with the element of fire, and can use this Divine sacred fire to transmute any lower energies you may be driving through.

Archangel Raphael

Next, ask Archangel Rafael to come in, to keep you safe, healthy, and in a high vibrational state as you travel. As you ask, Raphael will place his emerald green healing light around you.

Archangel Uriel

Next call upon Archangel Uriel to surround you with light, to help you to stay positive, tuned into inspiration, and tuned into guidance, wherever you’re headed.

Archangel Zadkiel

Finally, call in Archangel Zadkiel to surround you, your travelling companions and your vehicle, with the violet flame, transmuting lower vibrations and any tensions, keeping you uplifted and tuned in to the higher dimensions while staying present where you are in the moment, open to inspiration, open to guidance, and open to make the most of your travels.

I can assure you, when you do this, not only will your trip go better, but you’ll feel great, you’ll be uplifted, and you’ll actually be doing angelic light work wherever you go, because with all of these angels around you, invoked and invited in, you then automatically are cleansing and uplifting the places you’re traveling through and the people you’re travelling by, doing incredible light work, as you road trip across the country, or drive wherever it is you’re going.

How to do Lightwork In The Airport

So, as I was just hanging out and doing something I always do in airports, which is anchoring the light I realized that I should make a video to document my Airport Lightwork Process and share with you how to anchor light in airports or really wherever you are.

You can do this in a train station, at a rest stop, or really any place you’re inspired to do so while traveling or even at home.

The reason I call this “Airport Lightwork” is that it’s really powerful to do in the airport due to the fact that in airports you encounter so many different people and energies.

I once read that during an average hour walk through an airport, you will encounter more people than the average Native American person used to meet their entire life. And that’s just like spending an hour in an airport on an average day, not to mention how many more people you encounter when it’s busy or when your flight is delayed.

Anchor the Light

To anchor the light in an airport or wherever you are, invite in your angels, ask them to surround you, and then imagine an orb of light above your head. Tune into this orb of light with your imagination and awareness, just letting it lower down around your entire being, filling you with light, and surrounding you in an orb of light that protects your energy. Invoking this orb of light as an energetic shield is special because it lets Divine love and guidance and light through, but it blocks out any foreign energies or lower vibrations from others.

Once you have this orb around you, imagine the light now rippling out beyond you. The orb growing in size and shining as bright as a star, glowing immensely bright like the sun, filling the entire airport, or filling wherever you are, with infinite light of the divine, of love, and of the angels.

See this light illuminating everything, releasing negativity, cleansing the space, and shining the infinite light of the Divine throughout all that is.

This is such powerful work. It will make you feel better. It will benefit everyone you encounter, and the ripple effect is vast and large, benefiting everything in existence.

So, next time you’re in an airport, try doing this, filling yourself with light, surrounding yourself with light, and letting it ripple throughout everything.

Imagine Incredible Light Filling the Airport

In addition to surrounding yourself with this orb of light, you can quite simply imagine light filling the entire airport, flowing through you, and flowing throughout everything. There are a couple of different ways to do this.

The Star of Light

The first variation is to use the star of light. Envision (and therefore call in) a star of light in the center of the airport, glowing as brightly as the sun and shining throughout everything.

The light of this star reaches into every corner, every crevice, level and room. This light flows above and underground, along the walls, railings and floors. It surrounds every person, object and animal in the airport with unconditional love and light, dissolving negativity, and anchoring divine love.

The Tornado of Light

The next variation you can use to fill the airport with light, is the tornado of light. Here you envision a tornado of light spiraling through the airport, cleansing everyone, cleansing the space, and again, anchoring unconditional love and light of the divine in the airport, or wherever you are. The next time that you’re in an airport, try doing this, filling yourself with light, surrounding yourself with light, and letting it ripple throughout everything.

When you’re finished, ground your energy, by feeling your connection to the earth, visualizing your energy flowing down, connecting to earth and all that is. And then, keep your heart open, keep shining bright, return to love, and know that all is well.

And of course… When it’s time to catch your flight, call in the angels and keep surrounding yourself with light…

And fly on the wings of angels!

Who is the patron saint of safe travel prayer?

In the rich traditions of the Catholic Church, St. Christopher stands out as the most widely venerated patron saint of safe travel. According to the ancient legend passed down through generations of faithful Catholics, Christopher was initially named Reprobus, a Canaanite man of immense height and strength. After converting to Christianity, Reprobus wanted to serve God in some powerful way. He became a ferryman, carrying people safely across a treacherous river on his shoulders.

One stormy night, a child asked to be carried across the river. This child became heavier and heavier, to the point it felt like Reprobus was carrying the whole world on his shoulders. Through this difficult journey across the raging waters, the child revealed himself as Christ, the king of heaven. In awe of having carried the living Christ, Reprobus converted and was renamed Christopher, meaning “Christ-bearer.” Stories of Christopher’s aid to travelers led to his veneration as a saint who protects sojourners.

Over the centuries, prayers uttered to St. Christopher before setting out on a trip have become a staple practice of Catholic piety.

We shall start out on our road trips like we do any other journey in life, trusting the Lord to lead us, guide us, and keep us safe. With him, we can never be lost, and we’ll always find our way back home.

Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling. 

1. A Short Prayer for Safe Travel

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Dear God, as we travel today, I pray that You bless us with Your protection against any kind of sickness during our trip. Bless us with Your mercy and grace that we may be kept in good health as we travel. May the people around us during this trip also be in good health. Protect us from any virus that can bring harm to our health. Give us wisdom to also exercise caution and good hygiene throughout this trip. May the foods that we consume throughout this trip be cleansed by You to provide us with the nutrition to protect our bodies, the holy temples of Yours.  All this I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

It’s always good for us to say a prayer before any family trips for God’s protection to be upon us and our loved ones.

Things to know before visiting the Gili Islands

As far as tiny, picturesque islands go, the Gili Islands have it all and then some. Glassy waters full of colorful marine life, local tradition and culture, a rowdy nightlife scene, and also plenty of places to completely relax under the sun – it's the real deal. 

These three islands – Gili Trawangan , Meno and Air – are generally safe and fairly easy to navigate. As a first-time visitor though, you'll want a quick travel guide on a few specifics regarding trip planning, respectful etiquette, and safety before you arrive.

Take note of these 11 tips for a smooth journey around the Gili Islands.

1. Pack light, or at least skip the giant suitcase

We've been there and witnessed it: giant suitcases piled into the back of the Gili boats, later being lugged around on dusty laneways by sweaty, regretful travelers under the hot sun. Trust us on this one: packing light is the way to go for the Gili Islands. Either leave your suitcase at accommodations in Bali or use a service such as Bali Store Luggage to take care of it while you're island hopping. Between the logistics of getting on and off the Gili boats, plus the fact that the Gili Islands don't have any motorized vehicles – you're much better off bringing only what's comfortable to carry on your back.

2. Decide how to split your time between the three islands (or just wing it)

Whether you enjoy a quick weekend getaway or slowly move through all three islands over the course of a week, deciding how to split your time in advance is advantageous. Each island brings a different personality, with Gili Trawangan being notorious for parties and nightlife. Gili Meno, in the middle, draws a more laidback crowd – those seeking tranquility (and a decent number of honeymooners). To the east, Gili Air falls somewhere in the middle of the chill scale, where it's easy to bliss out in silence or get social at one of the island's many cheerful beach bars.

Even though the islands are small, you can have a completely different experience depending on where you go and what you do. Plan accordingly. 

3. Team up with other travelers to share boats between islands

It's possible to take public boats between all three Gili Islands, but they don't run very frequently – usually just a couple times per day – and plans are subject to change. If you're looking to travel on the fly, or completely on your own schedule, the best way to move between the Gili Islands is to team up with other travelers and share a private boat transfer. Walk down to the port and chat up some of the friendly boatmen waiting for your business, preferably with a friend or two to split the cost. Expect to pay around 300,000Rp for the entire boat for a one-way, depending on your negotiation abilities.

4. Dress and behave respectfully 

While you explore the Gili Islands, you might encounter a few signs that say "no swimwear in the village" – or simply a picture of a bikini with a big red no symbol on top of it. Most residents of the Gili Islands are Muslim, and dressing modestly is important for traveling respectfully. There's no issue rocking swim trunks or a bikini when you're actually at the beach – but cover up when you're heading inland, especially when passing through residential areas. Keep a big t-shirt and sarong in your bag, and you'll be good to go.

5. Check the calendar for any holidays

There are two holidays to be aware of, both bring different experiences in the Gili Islands: Ramadan, a Muslim holiday, and Nyepi, a Balinese holiday. Ramadan is usually around March or April where people fast from sunrise to sunset each day for a month. You can still travel to the Gili Islands, but be advised that some businesses will close earlier and parties are limited during this time. During Nyepi, Bali's day of silence which typically falls the first or second week of March, the entire island shuts down – leading many travelers to head to the Gili Islands where businesses remain open. This can make things pretty busy for two or three days over Nyepi.

6. Lock up your bicycle when you're not using it

You won't find any motorized vehicles on the Gili Islands, where the best method of transportation is either via foot or bicycle. Petty theft isn't all that common – but locking your bike whenever you're not using it is a best practice just in case. Insurance for bike theft isn't really a thing here, so if someone were to roam off with it, you'd be on the hook for covering the cost. Most folks simply put the lock around their tire rather than fastening it to a stationary object.

7. Always drink purified water 

Tap water is not safe for consumption across Indonesia so always only drink water you’ve either purified yourself; you have purchased in a sealed bottle; or have refilled your reusable from a clean water source to stay hydrated. A lot of people brush their teeth with the tap water without experiencing any issues, but if you're really concerned, use bottled water for that too.

8. Watch out for mosquitos

Catching dengue fever is the biggest risk from mosquito bites here – not to mention uncomfortable itchiness. Mosquitos are a year-round experience in the Gili Islands, slightly less so during the dry season from roughly June until October. The best way to prevent bites or mosquito-induced illness is by preparing yourself with bug spray, especially around dusk.

9. Drugs are illegal in Indonesia

You might've heard stories of magic mushrooms in the Gilis from other travelers – and it's true, several beachside cafes openly advertise the sale of magic mushrooms despite the fact that Indonesia has strong anti-drug laws. It's not uncommon to get offers for "magic shakes" or mushrooms while walking on the street, either. Do beware: Indonesia has extremely strict laws against illicit substances, including mushrooms.

Intoxication or possession is punishable by lengthy imprisonment (or worse!). According to Indonesia's tourism board , "Possession is punishable by 4 to 12 years of imprisonment. There is also IDR 800 million to 8 billion (US$89,600 to US$896,000) worth of fines."

10. Stick to beer and wine if you want to drink

Throughout the years, there have been countless reports of travelers in Indonesia becoming ill due to methanol poisoning from alcoholic spirits. The consumption of this illegal tainted alcohol – which has occurred even in fancy, upscale resorts – can cause severe illness, blindness, or even death. Methanol-tainted alcohol is typically the result of cost cutting, oftentimes far earlier in the supply chain before bars and restaurants have any say in the matter. The safest way to get a buzz is by drinking beer or wine, so load up on the Bintang beers or get champagne tipsy all day long.

11. Head west for sunset 

When the fiery sun begins to descend closer to the horizon, make your way west. Regardless of whether you're on Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, or Gili Air – the best sunset views are on the west coast, accompanied by views of Bali's towering Gunung Agung volcano off in the distance. It's the best way to slip into the evening, typically accompanied by sherbet-colored hues in the sky and good vibes.

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs

Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.

Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.

This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americans’ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.

For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.

Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .

How many Americans have traveled internationally?

Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.

To analyze how Americans’ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:

• Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
• Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
• Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.

Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.

However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nation’s gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read “Attitudes on an Interconnected World.” )

Who travels internationally?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).

Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.

Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).

Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.

There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.

Do travelers know more about the world?

Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.

Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.

Is international travel related to views of global engagement?

International travel experience is also linked to Americans’ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.

When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.

In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countries’ interests into account – even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.

Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.

Grayson Rodriguez has been among the best pitchers in the American League for what has quietly become a lengthy sample. 

Let’s take a look at why that matters in Tuesday’s matchup between the Orioles and Angels in Anaheim.

Orioles vs. angels prediction.

Since being recalled by the Orioles last July, the right-handed Rodriguez has pitched to an ERA of 2.59 across 100 2/3 innings. He’s allowed an xFIP of only 3.65 in that span.

He has pitched to a 115 Stuff+ this season, and has located effectively as well with a 102 Location+ rating.

He has successfully worked a quality changeup and excellent curveball off of his high velocity fastball (averaging 96.2 mph this year) to good results. Batters own an xSLG of .254 and .212 off of those two pitches, respectively.

Rodriguez has managed to finish five or more innings in each of his four starts this season for a total of 24 innings, including a strong opening day showing against the Angels in which he picked up the win in six innings of work (4 hits, 1 ER, 9 Ks, 1 BB).

The Angels have hit to a wRC+ of only 92 versus righties this season. They have struck out 23.5% of the time, and they safely project to be a below-average side versus right-handed pitching moving forward.

There is a good chance we see Rodriguez backed by some early run support, as a high-powered Orioles offense matches up against Griffin Canning.

Canning’s strikeout percentage has trended down to 18.2% this season, which coincides with a lesser Stuff+ of 84.

He owns an xERA of 5.31, an xFIP of 4.89,and has allowed an xSLG of .797 with his fastball, which he throws 39.9% of the time.

The Orioles have hit to a wRC+ of 130 versus right-handed pitching this season, which is the second-best mark in MLB . They have struck out only 20% of the time versus righties, and own a league leading 35% hard-hit rate.

In splits to both sides, Baltimore owns a league-leading .485 xSLG rate this season. Their 5.73 runs scored per game ranks second in MLB.

Orioles vs. Angels pick

Rodriguez is priced at +145 to record a win on bet365, and I see value with that number.

He has a great chance of posting a quality outing versus this Angels lineup, and should receive early run support as one of the league’s best offenses takes on Canning.
