Margaritaville at Sea just doubled in size by welcoming a new ship

Ashley Kosciolek

Margaritaville at Sea's new ship, Islander, officially set sail on its first voyage from Tampa on Tuesday. So far, it's doing a great job of catering to Parrotheads with plenty of tropical decor, including a giant flip-flop photo backdrop in the atrium, two dining rooms with giant palm trees in the middle and renovated cabins that feel more like you're renting someone's beach house than taking up residence on a ship.

margaritaville cruise freeport bahamas

Until now, the line, a partnership between Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville brand and the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, has only sailed from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida. Since 2022, it has exclusively offered two-night voyages on its first ship, the 1,680-passenger Paradise, to Freeport in the Bahamas .

With the addition of Islander, Margaritaville at Sea has increased its capacity by 160% and will now also serve Florida's west coast cruise market with regular four- and five-night departures to Key West and the Mexican Riviera from the Port of Tampa Bay.

Islander originally debuted in 2000 and sailed for Costa Cruises for more than two decades under the name Costa Atlantica. The vessel shared a ship design with Carnival Cruise Line 's Spirit Class . For that reason, Islander is likely to feel familiar to some cruisers.

I walked on board and immediately fell in love with the delightful mix of tropical Margaritaville vibes and remnants of designs by Joe Farcus, the architect and interior designer responsible for more than three decades of quirky decor on ships under the Carnival Corp. umbrella.

Under its new moniker, the 24-year-old, 2,650-passenger vessel was refurbished to include the first three-deck poolside LandShark bar, a tropical-themed atrium and cabins, and an adults-only pool and tiki bar. These updates make for colorful, lively fun that's synonymous with the Margaritaville name. Passengers can also look forward to 12 eateries and more than a dozen bars that serve a variety of cocktails.

The line's first ship debut had some hiccups . Stay tuned for more TPG coverage to see how Islander's first sailing compares and what you can expect from the new vessel.

Margaritaville Cruise: Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Sea

' src=

Parrotheads and margarita lovers rejoice! Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett’s well-known brand (rest in peace, Jimmy!), is out to sea! Hop onboard a Margaritaville cruise for a quick yet rejuvenating trip to the Bahamas.

The new cruise line is helping answer the question, “Can a song about a lost shaker of salt impact an entire sea-filled ocean?” You bet it can because it’s always 5 o’clock onboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, their new cruise ship.

Carefree Island Vibe Aboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise And Margaritaville Islander

Likened to the Margaritaville brand, the vibe of a Margaritaville cruise will be carefree, breezy, and tropical. Interior common spaces are decorated with bright colors and natural elements, like tropical foliage and nautical rope.

Staterooms are adorned in tan, white, and blue hues. Everywhere has a “leave your worries behind” atmosphere.

The ships’ exteriors have famous Jimmy Buffett quotes painted on the side, a touch any Parrothead appreciates. The Paradise ship says, “Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes…” Margaritaville Islander has “Out on the Sea for Adventure” painted on the side, from Buffett’s famous song, “Son of a Son of a Sailor.” It’s a favorite song of ours!

Both ships boast, “Where it’s always 5 o’clock” toward the front sides; that’s something we can toast to!

Rebrand for Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line to Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea took over the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, and completely rebranded. Their ship, Grand Classica , was been transformed into Margaritaville at Sea Paradise .

Millions of dollars were invested in the exciting refurbishment. Colors, patterns, and textures from the sand, sea, and sky influenced the interior design, which emulates the Margaritaville brand. You’ll find parrot motifs, beach scenes, and palm trees at your cruise destination and in the interior choices of common areas and staterooms on the ship.

Ship Upgrades (including Sustainability)

Though the ships may be a few years old and going through a complete renovation, something guests won’t ever see are the fuel tanks onboard. They were scrubbed (literally by hand) so the most low-sulfur emitting fuel could be put into the ships to make them as sustainability-conscious as possible right now.

Margaritaville at Sea Dining and Entertainment

Myriad dining, bar, and entertainment options are on board for you to enjoy during your short but significant cruise. There are plenty of places to throw back a few drinks — whether coffee or cocktails — and be entertained.

The names of the common spaces onboard are playful and befitting of a Margaritaville cruise.

Margaritaville at Sea Islander Dining and Entertainment

Included dining options on Paradise:

  • Mexican Cutie Cantina
  • Cheeseburger in Paradise Burger Bar
  • Fins Dining
  • Port of Indecision Buffet

  • Far Side Sushi
  • Islander Dining Room
  • Island Eats
  • JWB Prime Steakhouse
  • Margaritaville Coffee Shop
  • In-Room Dining

Save when you pre-purchase a beverage package, called the Ultimate Beverage Chill , for $59.99 per night per person.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Dining and Entertainment

Gourmet options on Islander include:

  • JWB Prime Steak & Seafood (that’s James William Buffett for the non-parrotheads out there)
  • Frank and Lola’s Pizzeria (Frank and Lola are the subjects of one of Jimmy Buffett’s songs, of the same name)
  • LandShark Sports Bar (Landshark is Jimmy Buffett’s brand beer, so this is of course appropriately named)
  • Margaritaville Coffee & Pastry Shop
  • Euphoria Lounge
  • 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar

We can only hope to find ourselves on board, sipping an ice-cold drink as we listen to a band play Jimmy Buffett’s well-known hits, complete with the tropical sounds of steel drums and guitar strings. (RIP, Jimmy!)

Amenities include several restaurants and dining areas, pools, entertainment programming, retail stores, a St. Somewhere Spa, and Fins Up! Fitness Center.

Tales of Margaritaville, onboard Entertainment Show

Jimmy Buffett and famous producer Frank Marshall teamed up to write the show for the ship called Tales of Margaritaville. Of course, it features hits from his well-known catalog of songs!

Price Point for Margaritaville at Sea

Starting pricing for a Margaritaville at Sea cruise is $169 to $189, per person, depending on the sailing date.

The affordable pricing is partially due to the cruise’s short itinerary length (2-nights, 3-days). It’s a great option for anyone who wants a quick getaway that disembarks and returns to an easy-to-get-to port.

Variety of Cruise Category Options

There are 658 cabins onboard, with a variety of cabin categories within the ship’s 10 decks.

This includes Outside-View staterooms with portholes, Interior cabins , and a limited number of Grand Terrace Suites with balconies. (The majority of the ship is either Outside View or Interior cabins.)

Square Footage of All Cabins

The 658 staterooms are broken down as follows, including how large the square footage is of each category:

  • 10 Terrace Suites (505.9 sq. ft.)
  • 2 Junior Suites (333.5 sq. ft.)
  • 430 Ocean View (152 sq. ft.)
  • 216 Inside (148 sq. ft.)

  • Elevated dining experiences, as concierge guests can enjoy special seating arrangements for two

Though details have not been announced, we have confirmed that there is potential for a ship-within-a-ship class onboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.

Margaritaville at Sea is fun for all ages

Margaritaville is a very family-friendly brand. Infants 6 months or older, children, and adults will enjoy this cruise. If your family wants to escape with a Margaritaville at Sea vacation, consider booking a group package for your multi-generational traveling experience to paradise.

If you listen to Jimmy Buffett’s music, you know if his songs are playing on board they are kid-friendly. The melodies are upbeat, fun, and relaxing. His lyrics are absent of curse words and he even imparts humor in some of his songs that children and adults alike enjoy.

Children’s Programming on Board

A children’s program is being developed. It will likely be based on one of Jimmy Buffet’s children’s books .

“Cruise and Stay” (Land/Cruise) opportunities pair Margaritaville at Sea with Resorts

If you find that a 2-night/3-day cruise isn’t enough time to relax and soak up the sun, you can extend your stay with Margaritaville at Sea’s option to stay a few nights at a resort on Grand Bahama Island.

Extend your Bahamas adventure for four or six nights at one of their participating beachfront properties: Grand Lucayan Bahamas or Viva Wyndham Fortuna Resort.

While the program continues to evolve and grow, it will likely take advantage of a golden opportunity that’s presented itself with Margaritaville at Sea: the chance to capitalize on Margaritaville’s reputable resort properties.

For the moment, you can only book Cruise and Stay packages by calling this number: 855-656-2451

Unique Incentives for Margaritaville at Sea and Ways to Experience Margaritaville at Home

The possibilities for Margaritaveill’s land-based products to be coupled with this new venture to the sea are endless. There has been talk of a beach club, and also rolling out a perks program in conjunction with the resorts.

And don’t forget about the Margaritaville products that you can buy online and in stores. They may eventually be incorporated into this new cruise line at sea!

How extending your vacation on Grand Bahama Island with the Cruise & Stay option works

You will board your Margaritaville at Sea cruise from the Port of Palm Beach on Day 1. Then on Day 2, when it arrives at Grand Bahama Island, you disembark with your luggage. After your stay at the resort on the island, you get back on the ship to sail back to the Port of Palm Beach .

For instance, if you sail on a May 2nd cruise, you would get off the ship in Freeport on May 3rd and you’d be transferred to your hotel in Grand Bahama Island. Then you stay there for 4 nights at one of the two properties.

To return to Florida, you then board the ship again at the port on Grand Bahama Island on May 7th and disembark when it docks back in Florida on May 8th.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sailnig to the Bahamas during its inaugural sailing.

Pre-Cruise COVID Testing is Not Required

As of July 23, 2022, Margaritaville at Sea removed its pre-cruise COVID testing requirement for vaccinated guests.

Unvaccinated guests are still required to provide proof of a negative antigen COVID-19 test taken no more than one day before the sailing.

What is the square footage of each room size?

Hi Robert! It is as follows:

658 Staterooms:

10 Terrace Suites (505.9 sq ft.) 2 Junior Suites (333.5 sq ft.) 430 Ocean View (152 sq ft.) 216 Inside (148 sq ft.)

We have added it to the post as well. Cheers!

Do you have pictures of the junior suite?

We do not, Sharon. Sorry about that!

Can you start the cruise from Freeport

Hi Les! You cannot start the cruise in Freeport right now. The only way to get on the ship in Freeport is if you did the land package and stayed there as “part” of the cruise, then get back on the ship to complete the cruise to get back to the Port of Palm Beach. Let me know if that makes sense and answers your question!

When the ship docks in Grand Bahama, is it the island of Freeport. Grand Bahama? Also. Where can you book the cruise?

Hi Linda – You can book the cruise online (margaritavilleatsea.com) and Grand Bahama is the island. Freeport is the city on Grand Bahama Island where the ship is in port.

Where can we book the Margaritaville cruise along with an island stay? Would love to do to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in November of this year!

That sounds like an awesome first wedding anniversary idea and trip, Mallory! For the moment, you can only book the Cruise and Stay packages by calling them at: 855-656-2451. Hope that helps!

What are your Covid policies? Do you need to be vaccinated?

Hi Kelly! We’re cruise writers who write about cruise lines and cruise news. For the most up-to-date COVID policies for any cruise line, we recommend going directly to the cruise’s website. There’s usually a Health & Safety tab option on their menu or a tab with info to prepare for sailing. Here it is for Margaritaville at Sea: https://margaritavilleatsea.com/prepare-to-sail/ Hope that helps!

I’m a Travel Agent trying to get dates of sailing how do I obtain that ?

Hi Regina – you’ll have to contact Margaritaville at Sea directly or check their website.

Does the cruise package include transportation to the marketplace and back? If so what time is it available to guest?

Hi Christina! We aren’t the direct cruise line – please reach out to them directly for precise information regarding transportation for your cruise!

Do we need visa to go to Bahamas if we are not Americans and do children require Covid 19 PCR tests?

We recommend searching for information from the government about where you are traveling to/from for up-to-date information. We cannot advise on such things.

Will my Florida drivers license be ok for ID?

Hi Pamela – It will not. You need a passport because it crosses into other countries.

Good Day, I am interested in your Bahama 3-day cruise. I’m looking at December 31 – Jan 2. My 67th birthday is on January 1st. Please let me know if you can accommodate this time frame.

Hi Zandra – we are writers and not travel agents! It’s best to reach out to the cruise line, directly, or a travel agent for your birthday cruise. Happy birthday in a few months! We hope you enjoy whatever way you celebrate, especially if it’s on a cruise!

What type of clothing is suggested to pack? Formal wear?

The cruise is very casual and informal. Pack for warm weather. Packing one pair of pants and a pair of closed-toed shoes is always safe too.

I am interested in your cruise and stay package with extended dates (a month). How can I book?

Hi Chelsea – we are cruise writers. Please reach out to the cruise line directly to book, linked in our post. Thank you!

Margaritaville's First Cruise Ship Is Setting Sail for the Bahamas in 2022

Are you ready to nibble on sponge cake...at sea?

margaritaville cruise freeport bahamas

Margaritaville at Sea / The McBride Company

Break out your flip-flops, tank tops, and sunscreen: Margaritaville is getting into the cruise game.

Bringing the resort experience offshore, Margaritaville at Sea will start sailing two-night cruises from the Port of Palm Beach, Fla. to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. Although the inaugural cruise was initially slated to set sail on April 30, 2022, the launch has since been postponed to May 14 due to global shipping delays.

The new cruise line is a rebranding of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, with its first ship, "Margaritaville Paradise," a multi-million dollar overhaul of BPCL's flagship vessel, "Grand Classica." As part of the renovation, the cruise ship has been outfitted with 658 cabins and 10 passenger decks in Jimmy Buffet's lifestyle brand's carefree-meets-luxurious style, with special nautical design features inspired by ocean waves and sandy beaches.

A variety of food and drink options are available onboard the ship, ranging from the JWB Prime Steak & Seafood and Margaritaville Coffee & Pastry Shop to the Port of Indecision Buffet and the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar. Guests can also enjoy a casino, theater, spa and fitness center, pools, and a retail shop, among other activities and entertainment.

“Margaritaville at Sea will be a new, exciting, and fun way for guests to escape and vacation in Margaritaville,” said John Cohlan, CEO of Margaritaville . “From oceans to lakes, Margaritaville has an organic tie to the water and with Margaritaville at Sea, we’re able to put our iconic lifestyle, resort experiences, and elevated service directly on the sea. We look forward to seeing guests on, and in,  Paradise .”

And if it's anything like the brand's island-themed resorts and restaurants, Margaritaville at Sea is sure to make you feel like all your troubles have fallen away. “To me, the only thing better than being on a beach by the ocean, is to be on the ocean. Now you can follow in our wake,” said Buffett in a statement.

Cruises start at $169; tickets are available to purchase on Margaritaville at Sea's website .

We just returned from the Margaritaville cruise. It was so much fun! It had the same laid back and relaxing vibe of the Margaritaville Resort that we visited last year. The price is great so we will be back!

Nice Little Cruise

Posted by Randy Summers on Jan 5th 2016

The Grand Celebration is quite-a-step up from the old Celebration cruise. It's much larger and much newer. We like this little cruise and have also taken the cruise & stay package, combining 2 nights at the Viva resort in the Bahamas...great deal!

Jimmy Buffett’s new Margaritaville cruise ship just arrived in Tampa

  • Sharon Kennedy Wynne Times staff

TAMPA — Tampa’s newest cruise ship has arrived, coming from the Jimmy Buffett cruise line Margaritaville at Sea. The company’s second ship, The Islander, will begin sailing Friday, June 14, from Port Tampa Bay for four- and seven-day trips to Mexico and Key West.

Themed for the chill Buffett-inspired lifestyle, the Margaritaville cruise line has been offering shorter two-night itineraries to the Bahamas out of Palm Beach. But its new larger ship launching from Tampa will more than double the passenger capacity of the boutique cruise line with 1,105 staterooms, which includes six signature grand suites inspired by some of the late singer’s most iconic songs. Cruises start at $229 to Cozumel and $479 for longer trips that include Belize and Mexico.

It offers a three-story poolside LandShark Bar at Sea, a Play Pad, water slide, casino, spa and pools. Guests will be able to fuel up at the Port of Indecision Buffet, stay in shape at the Fins Up Fitness Center, relax at the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Pool and take a selfie at the Flip Flop Atrium.

Savannah Buffett, eldest daughter of the late singer, songwriter and sailor, will be the ship’s official godmother . She co-authored two children’s books with her father, has hosted radio shows, and was a back-up singer in the 1998 music video “Jamaica Farewell.”

The Tampa cruises will feature mostly four- and five-night western Caribbean itineraries to Cozumel, Key West and the Yucatan town of Progreso.

Earlier this year, the company announced that teachers, first responders and military will be able sail as many times as they like for free with a paying guest. In addition, all passengers sailing in the hero’s stateroom will receive an Express Pass and other benefits as part of the enhanced program. To take advantage of the offer, book online through the link available on Govx.com or at margaritavilleatsea.com/offers/heroessailfree/ .

Freeport cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-06-16 06:59

Port Freeport cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Freeport, Bahamas, Grand Bahama Island. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Freeport cruise port (Port Lucaya) is located on Grand Bahama Island (Bahamas), approx 50 mi (80 km) from USA Florida's coast (direction East). The nearest US seaport is PortMiami FL . Freeport is the second biggest Bahamian cruise port - after country's capital city Nassau (New Providence Island) .

The city has population around 270,000. It is served by Grand Bahama International Airport and also by domestic ferries with regularly scheduled itineraries to other Bahamian islands. Regular fast ferries connect to USA ( Fort Lauderdale FL ) operated by the Spanish shipping company  Balearia Eurolinias Marítimas SA .

Tourism is The Bahamas' largest industry and main source of income, with around 1 million international visitors annually. Several medium- and large-sized cruise liners call at Freeport weekly. Most hotels on Grand Bahama Island are along the southern coast. The primary tourist shopping area is the International Bazaar located near downtown Freeport. The other major shopping area is Port Lucaya Market Place.

Freeport is a major seaport since the early-1960s. It is also a free trade zone featuring numerous hotels, casinos, restaurants, Port Lucaya‘s beaches, numerous shopping and shore excursion possibilities.

Port Freeport Bahamas

Port Freeport Bahamas is operated via joint venture between Hutchison Ports FHC (Chinese privately owned company) and The Port Group (Grand Bahama's Port Authority).

FHC is one of the world's largest artificial harbours, and also the Caribbean's deepest harbour waterway. Port's entrance channel and turning basin (swinging basin) were dredged to allow vessel draft of 16 m (52 ft).

Businesses at the FHS harbor include daily scheduled ferry and cruise ship visits, roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro ship) facilities (handling containerized and LTL / "less than truckload shipping" cargos), also facilities serving car transhipment, wetdocking (two 900-ft / 274-m berths) and ship repairs.

Port's facilities can accommodate simultaneously 3 cruise vessels and 5 Ro-Ro ships (cargo-passenger ferries). Vessels with max draft 9 m (30 ft) are berthed alongside. Tugboat support and pilot services are also available.

Grand Port is a Carnival Corporation -sponsored cruise terminal in Freeport. The new (exclusive) Carnival Cruise Port project was officially started in May 2022 (origanly the start was planed for 2019) and generated ~1000 construction jobs for building a modern building and a large (2-ship) berth. Labor agreement had ratio 80-20 / Bahamian-foreign workers.

Via joint ventures, Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd/aka Hutchison Ports (a Hong Kong China-based multinational) owns Freeport Container Port (51%) and Grand Bahama Airport (51%), together with Grand Bahama Port Authority.

(Royal Caribbean) Grand Lucayan Resort Bahamas

In March 2019, the joint venture company Holistica Ltd ( RCG-Royal Caribbean Group  and ITM Group / Mumbai India ) signed a letter of intent with The Bahamas government for the purchase of Grand Lucayan Resort (an all-inclusive resort complex) and redevelopment of the cruise port Freeport Harbor. The 2-year, USD 195 million project includes Grand Lucayan Resort's purchase (USD 65 million) plus USD 135 million for development works. The new (RCL-exclusive) cruise port is expected to bring to annually an additional 2 million cruisers to Grand Bahama island. The project includes the construction of a theme park and a new 5-star hotel. Grand Lucayan Resort suffered significant damages during Hurricane Matthew (October 2016) and was forced to close 2/3 of its property.

On June 24, 2019, RCCL and ITM Group established the Miami -headquartered joint venture company "Holistica" specializing in cruise port development projects worldwide. Holistica's first project was the USD 275 million Grand Lucayan Resort in Freeport Bahamas. Developments by Holistica were also planned for Costa Maya (Mexico), Roatan Island (Honduras) and Kumamoto (Kyushu Island, Japan).

On March 2, 2020, Holistica Destinations officially announced the USD 300 million private cruise resort project "Lucaya Property". The investment includes redeveloping and expanding Freeport Cruise Terminal (to be renamed to "Harbour Village") and building a leisure complex with a large hotel (526 rooms), wellness facilities, shopping village, convention center (sized 40,000 ft2 / 3720 m2), theme park (with water slides, outdoor playgrounds, zip-lines).

In late-December 2021, RCG announced that the sale agreement for the resort is canceled but plans to participate in a new bidding process. The Bahamian government is still planning to sell the property but its development is to be independent of the cruise port.

Lucaya Property is approx 9 mi (15 km) west of Harbour Village (Freeport Cruise Terminal). At Harbour Village for tourists will be introduced new shopping and dining venues (bars, restaurants), live entertainment and nightlife programming, beach zones, new shore excursions, new transport infrastructure (serving ferries, buses, passenger vehicles). The Lucaya Property project is planned for completion in 2022-Q4.

Currently, Grand Lucayan is split into two resorts (Grand Lucayan, Lighthouse Pointe), of which only Lighthouse Pointe (as of 2021) is open. The all-inclusive day pass costs US$75 (adults) and US$65 (children) and includes food and beverages (at all restaurants), house wines (served by the glass), local draft beers, bottled beers, some liquors, chairs and umbrellas. To the expenses, tourists must add taxis (US$35 one way) between the cruise port and the resort.

Grand Lucayan's two most popular features are its large infinity pool, the beach, smaller lap pool, Jacuzzi, pool bar (complimentary beverages and food / burgers, wings, seafood, salads, desserts).

(new cruise port) Carnival Grand Bahama

On May 12, 2022, was held the groundbreaking ceremony for Carnival Corporation 's new cruise port destination on Grand Bahama Island. The special event was attended by Christine Duffy (CCL's President), Arnold Donald (Carnival Corporation's CEO), Philip Davis (Bahamas Prime Minister), Chester Cooper (Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister), Ginger Moxey (Grand Bahama's Minister), Sarah St. George (Grand Bahama Port Authority's Acting Chairman).

The new "Carnival Grand Bahama" cruise port (planned for opening in 2024-Q4) is being developed on the island's southern coast (121+ hectares / 300+ acres of land at Sharp Rock).

The development project includes the construction of a dedicated Cruise Pier (with capacity to berth two large EXEL-class ships simultaneously), a large white-sand beach, an Excursions Dock (embarkation point for land tours and excursions via buses), a Nature Reserve area, a leisure complex with an interior swimming pool, Bahamian-operated food and beverage venues, retail shops.

Dredging works (for deepening the waterway) were scheduled to start in 2022 (September-October) and to be completed in January 2023.

Grand Bahama Shipyard (Port Lucaya, Freeport)

Freeport Bahamas is also famous with its ship-repair yard often used by Bahamas- flagged cruise vessels for regularly scheduled repairs, maintenance and drydock refurbishment  works.

Among the shipyard's regular customers are the cruise companies CCL-Carnival , RCI-Royal Caribbean , Princess , NCL-Norwegian , Walt Disney ,   MSC , Oceania , RSSC-Regent .

The drydock facility is owned by the GBSL company (Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd). Since 2017, Royal Caribbean has joint ownership of Freeport Shipyard (40%) together with Carnival Corporation (60%). The shipyard has three floating dry docks, as well as mechanical and steel workshops (updated in 2016 with new equipment).

  • Drydock 1 has LOA length 268 m (880 ft), width 33,5 m (115 ft), max vessel draft 8 m (26 ft), lifting capacity 27,000 tons. Floating dock 1 is served by 2 cranes.
  • Drydock 2 has LOA length 300 m (985 ft), width 58,5 m (192 ft), max vessel draft 9 m (30 ft), lifting capacity 82,500 tons. Floating dock 2 is served by 4 cranes.
  • Drydock 3 has LOA length 310 m (1017 ft), width 54,5 m (179 ft), max vessel draft 8,5 m (27 ft), lifting capacity 50,000 tons. Floating dock 3 is served by 3 cranes.
  • Finger Pier has LOA length 300 m (985 ft), max vessel draft 14 m (42 ft), max water depth 16 m (48 ft) and is served by 1 crane.
  • North Beach Wharf has LOA length 300 m (985 ft), max vessel draft 14 m (42 ft), max water depth 20 m (60 ft) and is served by 3 mobile cranes.
  • The on-site workshops provide the following services - steel and pipe fabrication, mechanical services (machinery and equipment overhauls), woodworking, electrical services, Clean Rooms (pumps-, valves- and thruster overhauls), separate (dedicated) repair area for cruise ship's lifeboats and tender boats.

In March 207, RCCL-Royal Caribbean signed an agreement with The Bahamas Government to increase its employment of Bahamian citizens. By this agreement, Royal Caribbean also has joint ownership of the Freeport shipyard where major drydock refurbishments and ship maintenance works on many RCCL ships take place.

For 2018, the shipyard reported a record year with a total of 29 cruise vessels scheduled for drydocks (over 2017's 23 ships). Generally, refit works include propulsion system (thrusters, azipods, stabilizers) and technical overhauls, hull treatments and repainting (hull blasting, silicone coatings), staterooms and public areas upgrades. More complex refit projects include adding new onboard facilities (like waterparks, cabin balconies), steel replacement (in areas below waterline), pipe replacements, adding new diesel generator sets, installing cyclo-converters.

The Bahamas' 2021-2022 budget included ~USD 350 million (~EUR 295M) planned investments into Grand Bahama Shipyard. The project included replacing the two damaged drydocks with larger facilities that can handle the world's largest passenger ships. After its completion, Grand Bahama will become the world's largest cruiseship-repair yard.

In October 2023 was announced a USD 600 million expansion project aiming to make the facility the world's largest cruise ship repair yard. The project includes two new floating drydocks which will enable servicing both operational and under-construction cruisers as well as other types of marine vessels. The project includes investments from the world's largest cruise shipowners - Carnival Corporation, and Royal Caribbean Group/RCG. Both China-made floating docks are currently under construction by Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co Ltd/BSIC (a subsidiary of CSSC/China State Shipbuilding Corporation) and are scheduled for deliveries in 2025 and 2026.

In December 2023, it was rumored that RCG was negotiating to purchase the Xanadu Beach Hotel (in Freeport Harbour) with land area of 40-50 acres (16-20  hectares/0,16-0,2 km2). The Xanadu Beach Hotel (1968-built, capacity 215 rooms) in 1972 was purchased by Howard Robard Hughes Jr (1905-1976) and also includes an 80-berth yacht marina.

Freeport cruise terminal

Freeport Bahamas cruise terminal is in Lucaya Harbour - approx 10-min drive distance from downtonw. Port's tourist centre (Port Lucaya Marketplace) is at approx 25-min walking distance from the terminal.

Port Lucaya passenger terminal as facilities offers sheltered waiting areas (for passenger pick-up / drop-off), retail shops, craft market (including locally made merchandise), redesigned / optimized landscaping. The taxi rate to Freeport City from the terminal is around USD 15. Rates for group vans to Port Lucaya’s Bazaar is USD 5 per person.

The official language in The Bahamas is British English. Be aware to look to your left as the driving is on the road left side due to country's British heritage. The currency is Bahamian dollar, but US dollars are also accepted. ATMs can be found at all banks. Currently, around the cruise terminal, there are only a few bungalows and a gazebo where you can listen live music performances by local bands.

The 2-year, USD 195 million project includes Grand Lucayan Resort's purchase (USD 65 million) plus USD 135 million for development works.

The new (RCCL-exclusive) cruise port is expected to bring an additional 2 million cruisers to Grand Bahama island annually. The project includes the construction of a theme park and a new 5-star hotel. Grand Lucayan Resort suffered significant damages during Hurricane Matthew (October 2016) and was forced to close 2/3 of its property.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with the latest information.

The best Bahamas cru ises take you away from the daily grind, transporting you to theme park-like private islands and beach-lined paradises. Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don’t regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don’t worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. If a luxury cruise to the Bahamas is your goal, look at the top suite options on a mainstream or premium line.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show.” There’s a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you’ll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it’s also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas from Miami

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean ‘s massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It’s loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it’s a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

When Royal Caribbean’ s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas’ inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go?  Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children’s programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando’s Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you’ll also find your spot on board. From the “Star Wars”-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including “Star Wars” and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It’s light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children’s program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line’s last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice C lass ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship’s power grid. You’ll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn’t draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady from Miami

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It’s the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You’ll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and ‘80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you’re easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau’s Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line’s Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line’s “freestyle cruising” mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It’s currently Carnival’s oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau’s iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival’s private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city’s historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don’t care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they’re ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival’s signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola “sailing” down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they’ve been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It’s almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can’t quite get enough of — whether it’s beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style. The key is identifying the cruise that fits your style, preferred activities and vacation budget.
